VVS Laxman to Coach Indian Test Squad as Gautam Gambhir Returns to Delhi for Mother’s Treatment, Report

June 16, 2025, 10:32 am

Former India cricketer and current National Cricket Academy (NCA) head VVS Laxman will supervise India’s preparation for the opening Test against England, with head coach Gautam Gambhir temporarily back in India due to a family emergency.

Gambhir Flies Home After Mother Suffers Heart Attack

Gautam Gambhir flew back to India on Friday after his mother, Seema Gambhir, suffered a heart attack and was admitted to the ICU of a hospital in New Delhi.

“Gautam’s mother had a heart attack on Wednesday. He and his family left for India on Thursday, and they have reached Delhi,” a BCCI source told PTI.

“His mother is showing signs of recovery, although she is still in the ICU. In all likelihood, he will be back in the UK before the start of the opening Test (starting June 20) if all goes well.”

India and England will play the first Test of the five-match series at Headingley in Leeds from June 20 to 24.

Laxman Steps In as Interim Coach

VVS Laxman, who is currently in London ahead of India Under-19’s month-long UK tour, will temporarily step in to guide the senior team. The junior team will play five youth ODIs starting June 27, followed by two youth Tests in Beckenham and Chelmsford in July.

Laxman, having prior experience leading India’s squads in Gambhir’s absence, will support the team until the head coach rejoins.

In late 2023, Laxman coached a second-string India squad during a T20I series in South Africa and again in July 2024 during a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, where Shubman Gill captained the national side for the first time.

Support Staff Filling In During Intra-Squad Match

In the meantime, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate is overseeing India’s intra-squad four-day match between India and India A, which began on Friday. He is receiving support from other members of the coaching team, including bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.

Shubman Gill is leading the Indian team, currently staying in the UK, as they prepare for a challenging five-Test series against England.

Gautam Gambhir’s Unexpected Exit From England Sparks Speculation

June 13, 2025, 9:32 pm

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir is coming back home from England as his mother is being kept in ICU, reports news agency PTI. Gambhir had gone to England prior to the senior team members to observe the manner in which the junior team (India A) performs against England Lions in the 2-match unofficial Test series. On Friday, when India was scheduled to play an intra-squad match for the series, the news agency reported that Gambhir was coming back to India because of a family emergency. Gambhir had previously returned home from Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy because of such a family issue.

Reason for Sudden Departure of Gautam Gambhir

The report added Gambhir had to rush back to take care of his mother, who had a heart attack and is currently in ICU at a New Delhi hospital.

In Gambhir’s absence, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate will have the team’s charge during the four-day intra-squad match between India and India A, starting here on Friday.

“Gautam’s mother had a heart attack on Wednesday. He and his family left for India on Thursday and they have reached Delhi,” news agency PTI quoted sources as saying on Friday.

“Gautam’s mother had a heart attack on Wednesday. He and his family left for India on Thursday and they have reached Delhi,” the BCCI source informed.

He will be supported by other coaching personnel like bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.

Expected Return of Gautam Gambhir Before England Test Series

Gambhir is likely to be back in England in a week’s time if things go according to plan at home.

“His mother is showing signs of recovery although she is still in the ICU. In all likelihood, he will be back in the UK before the start of the opening Test (starting June 20) if all goes well.”

Team India Coach Gautam Gambhir Flies Home Midway Through England Tour — Here’s Why

June 13, 2025, 4:45 pm

Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has returned home from England due to a family emergency, news agency ANI reported. Gambhir, who had flown to the UK earlier to oversee India A’s progress against England Lions in an unofficial two-match Test series, had to abruptly cut his trip short just before a scheduled intra-squad match.

“Team India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, is returning to India from England due to a family emergency,” ANI quoted sources as saying on Friday.

Gambhir had travelled ahead of the main squad to monitor preparations for India’s upcoming five-match Test tour of England, beginning June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. The former opener previously flew home during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for a similar family matter.

Assistant coaching staff takes over intra-squad preparations

With Gambhir temporarily unavailable, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has taken charge of the team for the four-day intra-squad fixture between India and India A. Supporting ten Doeschate are other senior coaching members, including bowling coach Morne Morkel and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.

Gambhir is expected to return to England within a week, well before the start of the Test series.

India’s Test journey begins post-Rohit and Kohli era

The England tour comes at a critical juncture for Indian cricket. With veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from the Test format last month, the squad is undergoing a generational transition. The Shubman Gill-led team is expected to face tough conditions in England without the experience of its long-time batting stalwarts.

India will rely heavily on young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Sai Sudharsan to perform under pressure in English conditions.

The five-match Test series will take place between June and August 2025, with fixtures scheduled at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord’s and The Oval (London), and Old Trafford (Manchester).

Gautam Gambhir Slams IPL Celebrations in Bengaluru, Breaks Silence on Tragic Deaths

June 5, 2025, 9:02 pm

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke about the tragedy of Wednesday in Bengaluru, where a stampede killed 11 people and injured several others outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Gambhir was candid in his opinion, stating that he does not like roadshows and wants the authority to be much more responsible. The retired India batsman said that regardless of how great the moment is, over-the-top celebrations like these need to be reined in to maintain the safety of individuals.

A Celebratory Day Turned Tragic

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru, their first IPL trophy in hand after winning over Punjab Kings in the final, had an opportunity for a celebratory day with felicitations and a full Chinnaswamy Stadium waiting to welcome and bask in their glory. But the tragedy that ensued caught players, authorities, and the franchise by surprise. Police lost control of the sea of humanity surrounding the stadium, ultimately resulting in several deaths. Gambhir emphasized that there is nothing more precious than human lives, and if that is put at risk, there needs to be some serious soul-searching.

Gambhir’s Experience with Roadshows

As Gambhir himself had noted, he has experienced the honor of participating in two open-bus victory parades in his career: one with the Indian team in Mumbai when they won the 2007 T20 World Cup and another with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012. But, in Mumbai, things were so well managed that not a single disquieting piece of news emerged out of it. “I was never a believer that we need to have roadshows. Even when I was playing, I had the same statement to make. After winning in 2007 [T20 World Cup], I felt that we should not have roadshows. The lives of the people are far more important, and I will continue to say that. Even in future, I think we can be a little bit aware and not hold these roadshows,” Gambhir said ahead of the Indian team’s departure for England in Mumbai on Thursday.

“Have it under closed doors, or a low-profile affair inside a stadium. But it is very tragic what happened yesterday, and my heart goes out to the families of people who lost their loved ones. I hope that in future, nothing like this happens because we are all responsible citizens. Might as well cancel these roadshows” says Gautam Gambhir.

Gautam Gambhir Criticizes Roadshows After Tragedy

Actually, only last year, after having won the T20 World Cup in the West Indies, players were involved in another roadshow, again organized effortlessly in the same city. RCB have taken a lot of heat for going ahead with the celebrations within the stadium while citizens died outside, with the team being named in an FIR that was filed earlier in the day. Gambhir continued to make his point that if the infrastructure is not capable enough to cater to an event of this size, pulling the plug is the best course of action.

India’s Next Test Captain: Gambhir, Agarkar Set to Drop a Bombshell on May 24

May 23, 2025, 4:33 am

The long-awaited India Test team for the England tour will be announced on May 24 (Saturday), sources indicated on Thursday. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and selector chairman Ajit Agarkar are likely to conduct a joint press conference on Saturday afternoon to declare India’s team for the five-match Test series from June 20.

“The squad is ready. The head coach and chief selector will announce it on Saturday,” said a BCCI official. The time of the press conference will be released by BCCI shortly.

The selectors have to make key choices, none more significant than the captaincy. With Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket and Virat Kohli’s exit from the format, the leadership has changed hands. The focus is squarely on two aggressive captains: the classy top-order batter Shubman Gill and the belligerent pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, both competing for the much sought leadership position.

Shubman Gill: A Long-Term Bet in Test Cricket

Shubman Gill, also proving maturity ahead of time with the bat, has become a likely long-term captaincy prospect. His cool temperament and thoughtfulness, seen in recent domestic and in IPL for Gujarat Titans, are strong arguments. If he is entrusted with the job, it will be a clear indication from the selectors to bet big on a future leader. But his relative inexperience of Test captaincy at the international level continues to be a point of debate. Jasprit Bumrah, on the other hand, with his cricketing acumen and tested leadership by being able to lead from the front, is a more short-term answer.

Bumrah’s Case: Impact and Concerns

His short but impactful stints as stand-in captain have given him the recognition he deserves, showing him getting the flow of the game. The main issue with Bumrah’s captaincy, though, is dealing with his workload as an important fast bowler, particularly in challenging English conditions. The selectors will balance Gill’s potential against Bumrah’s experience and short-term impact. Aside from the captaincy, the all-important No. 4 batting slot is also a contentious issue.

Middle Order Puzzle and Possible Inclusions

With established players possibly changing roles or coming under heavy pressure, the door could be opened for one or two unexpected inclusions. Karun Nair, a name that has been forever linked with a triple century in Test cricket. He may find himself back in the running. His experience and capacity to score big innings may prove to be incalculably useful in English conditions. Another strong candidate is KL Rahul, whose adaptability makes him capable of batting anywhere in the top order. His recent Test performances, which have been a combination of aggression and resilience, make him a favourite to cement the middle order.

India A Tour: Key to Preparation for Test Tour in England

In a tactically calculated step towards best possible preparation, some of the fringe players and those targeted for the Test team are likely to leave early for England. This group will play a vital India A series against England Lions, gaining priceless acclimatisation to the home conditions as well as match practice.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nitish Reddy Kumar, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Harshit Rana, and Anshul Kamboj, all of whom have a high possibility of becoming members of the main Test team, are included in the India A team.

“No Cricket, No Bollywood With Pakistan”: Gautam Gambhir Demands Total Ban After Terror Attack

May 7, 2025, 12:34 am

India captain Gautam Gambhir demanded a total ban on all contacts with Pakistan, including but not limited to cricket series, Bollywood films and cultural festivals, after the terror attack that killed 26 people on April 22 at the Baisaran meadow in the Pehelgam area of Kashmir.

Past Cricketing Relations Between India and Pakistan

India have cut bilateral cricketing relations with Pakistan after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. It resumed for one three-match ODI series in India in 2012, but since then they only meet at multi-team tournaments such as the Asia Cup and ICC competitions (World Cups and Champions Trophies). At an ABP gathering, Gambhir stated that even that must stop.

Gambhir says “No Interaction More Important Than Lives of Our People”

“My personal answer to this, is absolutely no. This is my personal answer, ultimately this is government’s decision, and ultimately, government will decide, whether we play Pakistan, or we don’t play Pakistan, but for me, I have said this before, and many years ago, I had said this, that no cricket match, no Bollywood movie, no artist, any kind of interaction is more important than the lives of our people. No interaction is more important than the lives of our people, than the lives of our youth, than the lives of our people. Matches will keep happening, movies will keep being made, singers will keep singing, but the person whose family is lost, nothing bigger than that. This is my personal opinion, that till all this doesn’t stop, there should not be anything between India and Pakistan,” Gambhir said.

India’s Diplomatic Response to Terror Attack

Following the horrific terror attack that sent the whole country into shock. Innocent tourists were shot dead in daylight. India declared a number of steps against Pakistan. These included suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Closure of the sole land border crossing at Attari. And diplomatic downgrading in light of cross-border connections to the attack. Among other steps, India also suspended the social media accounts of prominent Pakistani actors and sportspersons.

Asked directly if India was going to play Pakistan in the Asia Cup this year or the T20 World Cup, to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka next year, Gambhir put the responsibility on the BCCI and the government.

“Let the Government Decide” Gambhir on Future Matches

“Playing Pakistan in the Asia Cup or T20 World Cup is not up to me. Honestly, this is not even in my jurisdiction. I think it is up to BCCI and more importantly, it is up to the government to decide whether India plays Pakistan or not, so whatever decision, government makes, I think we should be absolutely fine with it and we should not politicise that. Whatever the government decides, let’s stick to that.”

India-Pakistan Games to Remain at Neutral Venues

The next multilateral competition that India and Pakistan can feature in is the Asia Cup in September. The tournament calendar has not yet been decided, but India and Pakistan are valued members of the Asian Cricket Council.

In the Champions Trophy, India featured in all their matches in Dubai and not in the hosting nation, Pakistan, due to security fears.

As a part of a deal among the BCCI, the Pakistan Cricket Board, and the ICC, India-Pakistan games in ICC tournaments will be held in a neutral venue until the 2027 cycle.

Sidhu Challenges Gambhir to Bhangra After India’s Historic Champions Trophy Victory | Watch

March 10, 2025, 1:11 pm

Gautam Gambhir secured his first major title as India’s head coach as the team triumphed over New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy final. After Rahul Dravid stepped down following India’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory, Gambhir took charge. Although many critics questioned his leadership, especially in red-ball cricket, he ultimately silenced them by guiding India to its second Champions Trophy win.

Gambhir and Sidhu’s Poetic Exchange

As the celebrations unfolded at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, a memorable moment took place between Gambhir and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu. Known for his poetic flair, Sidhu watched as Gambhir showcased his own poetic skills.

Gambhir began by saying, “Fann kuchalne ka hunar seekhiye janab…” Sidhu immediately completed it, responding, “Saapon ke darr se jungle nahi chhore jaate.”

Following this, Sidhu shared the moment on social media, writing, “The Shayari that he asked me to narrate has a lot to say … he @GautamGambhir is here to stay … wish him and the Indian cricket team the very best …. You made India proud brother.”

Later, Sidhu playfully challenged Gambhir to dance Bhangra. However, Gambhir hesitated and did not join in. Even though Sidhu insisted, the India head coach only posed in a Bhangra stance instead of dancing.

Rohit Sharma Praises Gambhir’s Leadership

Meanwhile, India’s captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged Gambhir’s role in shaping the team’s mindset. He credited Gambhir for encouraging an aggressive style of play.

“It (attacking game) is not natural to me, but it is something I really wanted to do. When you try something new, you need the team and management’s support. They stood by me. In the ODI World Cup, I spoke to Rahul bhai, and he approved. Now, Gauti bhai has backed me as well. I played in a different style all these years, but I wanted to change and see if we could get better results,” Rohit stated.

With this victory, Gambhir has firmly established himself as India’s head coach. Not only has he silenced his critics, but he has also delivered a major title early in his tenure.

Gautam Gambhir Draws Criticism for Fantasy Cricket Post Before Champions Trophy Final

March 9, 2025, 7:15 pm

India team head coach Gautam Gambhir was at the center of controversy on the eve of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand. Gautam Gambhir was criticized by fans on social media for endorsing a fantasy cricket app just before India’s crucial match in Dubai on Sunday.

As anticipation grew for the final show, Gambhir posted a promotional message asking fans to guess the match winner and join a fantasy cricket league. But a majority of fans raised questions about the morality of the Indian team’s head coach promoting a fantasy sports website while being part of the tournament.

Gautam Gambhir Post Triggers Online Debate

The post was: “Kya RO-KO ki jodi Bharat ko ek aur Champions ODI trophy jeeta paayegi? Real11 par Trade karo. Aise hi aur sawalo ke jawab Yes/No mein do aur dheero inaam jeeto!”

Fans promptly filled the comments section, expressing concerns about a potential ‘conflict of interest.’ Several indicated that Gautam Gambhir connection to a fantasy cricket site while being the coach of the national team could be a cause for concern on ethical grounds.

Gambhir’s Strategic Choices Take India to the Final

Despite criticisms online, Gambhir’s role in India’s Champions Trophy mission has been indefensible. His strategic choices, most notably his aggressive decision to add five specialist spinners in India’s roster for Dubai, have been responsible for the team’s march towards the final.

Initially met with skepticism, this spin-heavy approach has paid off, with Indian spinners dominating opposition batting line-ups throughout the tournament. One of the most important decisions was supporting Varun Chakaravarthy, who had limited experience in ODIs. The Kolkata Knight Riders spinner has proved to be a game-changer and will likely have an important role to play in India’s title match against New Zealand.

As the last stand is on, Gambhir’s captaincy and strategic thinking will be in the limelight. Whether the fantasy cricket row disturbs his concentration or not, for the moment, his mission will be to lead India to another Champions Trophy victory.

Champions Trophy: Ex-Aussie Star’s Big Warning for Gautam Gambhir Ahead of Ind vs Aus Semis

March 4, 2025, 3:22 pm

Team India is facing Australia in the first semifinal of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai after beating New Zealand in their last group-stage game. With the wounds of their 2023 ODI World Cup final defeat still fresh, Rohit Sharma and his men will seek to get even with the Aussies, who are known to perform best under pressure in major tournaments.

Brad Haddin: ‘All Pressure is on India’

Ex-Australian cricketer Brad Haddin opines that India is under huge pressure to emerge victorious in this high-pressure match. In his comments on the Willow Talk podcast, Haddin noted that India played all their games in Dubai, something that should be hugely in their favor. Nevertheless, he cautioned that the pressure might work against them.

“India are in the unique position that they’ve played every game at the same venue, there is no grass in the square, it is dry. It suits India and I just think all the pressure is on them. They’ve got it set up, they’re playing great cricket but it’s a one-off shootout,” Haddin added.

Australia Preparing to Knock Off India?

Haddin emphasized the fact that Australia, without major players, is ready for knockout matches and there is no pressure for them going into this pivotal match.

“Australia pride themselves on making sure they’re tournament play is spot-on and this is one of those games. And I don’t think there’s any pressure on the Australians at all. They’ve (India) had it all their way and I can see – I don’t know whether it’s an upset – but I can see Australia beating India in these conditions. And I hope so, especially for where the tournament’s been,” he said.

Gautam Gambhir In the Dock?

Haddin also indicated that India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir might come under the scanner if the team does not reach the final.

“I think there’s a lot of pressure on India, with the way they’ve played their cricket since (coach) Gautam Gambhir has taken over” said Haddin.

“They probably haven’t had the success or style of game that’s really been that attractive for the last six months. So I think the pressure is right on India to make a final. And I think if they don’t make the final, there will be a big reaction,” he cautioned.

With hopes running high on India, all attention will be at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium where they meet Australia to reach the final.

Gautam Gambhir Under Fire? Star Player Alleges Unfair Dropping from India’s Playing XI

February 19, 2025, 11:49 am

Only days ahead of their first match against Bangladesh in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the Indian cricket team is in the midst of controversy. It is reported that a star wicketkeeper-batter is not pleased with head coach Gautam Gambhir for being left out of the playing XI. The cricketer feels that outside forces were at play, and this has led to speculation about dissension in the team.

Who is the Unhappy Wicketkeeper-Batter?

Even though the report does not identify the player, India’s limited talent pool of wicketkeeper-batters limits the options. KL Rahul has already been signed up as the tournament’s first-choice wicketkeeper. Meanwhile, another strong contender, Rishabh Pant, has just gone down with a knee injury in a training session in Dubai and is now under doubt.

But two prominent wicketkeeper-batters, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, were left out of the team. Kishan’s absence has been a point of discussion since he missed domestic games, even though BCCI had made it clear that domestic cricket was to be given priority. Even after his record-breaking ODI double-century against Bangladesh, his exclusion indicates a change in the team’s approach. Likewise, Sanju Samson, who has become India’s go-to wicketkeeper in T20Is, was also left out.

Choice Policy of Gautam Gambhir Under The Scanner

This is Gautam Gambhir’s initial ICC tournament as India’s head coach, and his choice decisions are already in the limelight. Even though India dominated England in the recent T20I (4-1) and ODI (3-0) series, internal conflict is in danger of overshadowing their Champions Trophy campaign.

Gambhir has openly supported KL Rahul, but doubts remain regarding whether the choices have been fair and square. According to sources, some of the decisions that put some of the players out of favor may have been influenced by past performances and personal ties.

Ahead of an important event for India, the scandal provides an unnecessary diversion. Everyone will be watching the team’s performance on and off the field as the campaign gets underway against Bangladesh.

Gautam Gambhir Faces Major Setback as BCCI Implements New Rules

February 14, 2025, 12:02 pm

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has launched a stringent 10-point guideline prior to the ICC Champions Trophy, designed to promote “discipline, unity, and a positive team environment. ” In response to reports of a ‘divided’ dressing room during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, the board has enforced several modifications, many of which were deliberated after discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir. Nonetheless, these new rules have also impacted Gambhir personally.

BCCI’s Travel and Accommodation Restrictions

According to the updated regulations, personal assistants or managers of support staff are no longer allowed to travel with senior players on the team bus or to share the same hotel accommodations as the team. This modification directly affects Gambhir, as his personal assistant, who was frequently seen accompanying him during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has now been instructed to reside in a different hotel from the team during the Champions Trophy in Dubai.

A report from PTI emphasized this new implementation, noting, “The personal secretary of a member of the coaching staff, who was habitually seen staying at the team hotel, now occupies a different accommodation even though he has been present at every location during the England home series. ”

BCCI’s Concern Over Unauthorised Access

During India’s tour of Australia, Gambhir was the sole coach accompanied by a personal assistant, which raised alarms within the BCCI. The board has now resolutely banned such arrangements.

An irritated BCCI official earlier questioned the PA’s presence, remarking, “Why was his PA sitting in the car designated for national selectors? They can’t even converse privately with a stranger in the vehicle. Why was he assigned a place in the BCCI’s hospitality box in Adelaide? ” Leaks from the Indian dressing room have become increasingly prevalent, with several instances reported during the Australia tour. The board is keen to reduce such occurrences by limiting unauthorized access.

The official further questioned, “How did he manage to have breakfast in the restricted area of a five-star establishment that is exclusively allocated for team members? ”

Stricter Rules for Players and Their Families

As part of these new protocols, players will not be permitted to have their family members, wives, or partners accompany them during the Champions Trophy. If a player requests an exception, they will need to personally pay for the travel expenses of their family. Previously, such restrictions were absent.

Moreover, the board has placed limitations on players bringing personal chefs, hair stylists, and agents during tournaments, thereby further tightening its control over the team’s environment.

Gautam Gambhir Set for Support Staff Overhaul, New Batting Coach Expected After BGT Setback: Reportc

January 16, 2025, 4:17 pm

Following India’s loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the BCCI is considering expanding the coaching staff, particularly adding a new batting coach, after a series of batting failures led to the team losing the title and conceding the series 1-3. Although there has been no official announcement, internal discussions suggest the need for strengthening the support team.

A Cricbuzz report reveals that various former domestic cricket heavyweights are being considered for the position of batting coach, though no final decision has been made. The current coaching team includes head coach Gautam Gambhir, bowling coach Morne Morkel, assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, and fielding coach T Dilip. There have been ongoing concerns regarding the roles of Nayar and Ten Doeschate within the team.

Following India’s disappointing performance on their tour of Australia and their recent struggles in Test matches, the coaching staff has come under heavy criticism. Players, including star batsman Virat Kohli, have been getting out in similar patterns repeatedly, which has contributed to the questioning of the coaching team’s effectiveness.

The issue of the coaching staff was discussed in a review meeting held in Mumbai on January 11. According to a PTI report, with the Champions Trophy approaching in just a month, any immediate changes could affect both the team and the support staff. While the specifics of the meeting cannot be confirmed, there may be suggestions to bring in a new expert for a fresh perspective.

Attention has mainly focused on the performances of skipper Rohit Sharma and Kohli, whose batting has been subpar, reinforcing the belief that a new addition to the coaching staff could help improve the team’s performance.

Gautam Gambhir’s Plan Casts Uncertainty on Another Indian Star’s Future Amid Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma Debate

January 9, 2025, 4:27 pm

Amid the ongoing conversation about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s prospects in international cricket following the Champions Trophy, the future of another senior Indian cricketer is now uncertain. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s position across formats is at risk, as his performances in both red-ball and white-ball cricket have raised concerns over recent months.

According to a report from the Times of India, sources within the BCCI suggested that Jadeja’s future is unclear, as head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel are focusing on assembling a core group for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the preparations for the tournament will commence with the upcoming Champions Trophy.

A BCCI source revealed to TOI, “Gambhir has been extremely firm about building core teams based on formats. Thus far, he hasn’t really altered much regarding the longer formats but has a distinct strategy for laying a solid foundation for the ODI World Cup. He is keen to present opportunities to a few more identified players. ” The source added, “It’s all about when the selectors decide that the transition should commence. They will consider whether to choose the safe option in Jadeja or move on at this point. ”

The report further indicated that Jadeja is on the verge of being dropped from the ODI setup due to his disappointing performances with the bat at No. 7, where his strike rate has been only 75 over the past two years. His absence from last year’s ODI tour of Sri Lanka following his T20I retirement was also underscored.

Jadeja’s status for the Champions Trophy is currently unclear, with Axar Patel positioned ahead of him in the pecking order. Washington Sundar is also in the mix for the spin all-rounder role, while Kuldeep Yadav stands out as the primary candidate as a specialist spinner for the tournament.

The source remarked, “Even in Test cricket, he has struggled to find his footing, although his bowling has remained dependable. There is a desire to move forward without him, especially in the ODI format. It will be a challenging decision in the upcoming days. ” Regarding Jadeja’s Test career, the source stated, “Jadeja is still somewhat in contention for the England tour due to the inexperience in the middle order. However, the selectors will have to reach a decision during the home season. For the Champions Trophy, selectors will understand that pitches in Dubai have typically favored slow bowlers. ”

‘Hasn’t Reached the Stage to Tell Virat Kohli ‘Boss, You Do This’: India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir’s Tactical Failures Highlighted

Gautam Gambhir has had a pretty challenging stint as the head coach of India, given the sequence of unsatisfactory results. Having taken over the reins from Rahul Dravid after India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign, Gambhir has been in charge when India lost series after series: from the ODI series in Sri Lanka to an embarrassing 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand on home soil (the first such defeat at home for India) and then the 1-3 result against Australia. His only major victories have been in T20I series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh while he has also won a Test series at home against Bangladesh. But India has lost six of their last eight Test matches with Gambhir at the helm. With the Champions Trophy around the corner, it seems his position is under scrutiny, more so in the context of the new-found freedom he has been given to make decisions about the team.

Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif, who had played with Gambhir, did not hesitate to criticize the coach for his lack of tactical acumen. He acknowledged that Gambhir might still not have enough authority to change Virat Kohli’s batting style but went on to point out that a coach should know how to take the right call on the XI to be chosen according to the situation. Kaif said, “The best coach is the one who is tactically superior. He should know how to pick the right XI according to the conditions. What side he should go with against a team like Australia, that is a coach’s job. The rest, like solving Virat Kohli’s technical issues, may not be possible because he may not have gotten that time yet. ‘Boss you do this’ to solve your batting issues. Perhaps Gambhir hasn’t reached that stage yet. He would need more time. But Gambhir hasn’t been on the top of his game tactically. He has been lagging behind. ”

Kaif further mentioned tactical errors in Gambhir’s player choices, especially in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He asked why India had begun the series without Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, who is an experienced player, and was not considered for the first Test. “I saw his press conference. I would want to know where exactly the team faltered. Whatever happened between Sam and Kohli has happened, you are digressing from the point. The point is that you lost three Tests at home against New Zealand. You reached Australia with a squad of 19 and then didn’t play Jadeja in the first Test, why didn’t you? He should have given an explanation for that. Ashwin, who is a legend, didn’t play for the first Test. However, we won the first Test because of Bumrah but these are the tactical mistakes that he has to correct in future,” Kaif said.

Former fielder Kaif also had his say, expressing dissatisfaction over the selection of some players like Harshit Rana and Dhruv Jurel ahead of others like Prasidh Krishna and Sarfaraz Khan. “What was the reason for selecting Dhruv Jurel in the first Test? Then you replaced him, but why? Sarfaraz Khan, who made a score of 150 on a turning pitch, didn’t get a single opportunity to play a Test in Australia. Why not? What precisely did you find in Harshit Rana that prompted you to choose him over Prasidh Krishna, who is the perfect hit-the-deck bowler for Australian conditions? ” Kaif questioned.

Gautam Gambhir Foregoes Salary and Drops Himself from Team Due to Poor Form

January 4, 2025, 8:03 pm

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir is under scrutiny for his performance since replacing Rahul Dravid. Under his leadership, India defeated Bangladesh 2-0 in a Test series but were clean swept 3-0 by New Zealand at home. Currently, India is down 1-2 in their ongoing five-match Test series against Australia, making the upcoming final game crucial for their World Test Championship hopes.

Reports suggest that Gambhir has been critical of keeping Rohit Sharma in the playing XI, as the Indian Test captain has struggled, scoring only 31 runs across three matches in the series.

However, Gambhir has displayed the courage to drop himself in the past for not performing well. This occurred during the 2018 IPL season when, as Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) captain, he struggled with the bat and his team lost five out of their first six matches. Shreyas Iyer, who replaced him as captain, confirmed that Gambhir made the decision himself to drop out of the playing XI, which Iyer called a courageous move. “I didn’t make any call to be honest. It wasn’t my decision to drop him (Gambhir). He himself decided to sit out, which was really courageous decision with him being the captain in the previous matches,” said Iyer.

Iyer also praised Gambhir’s decision to back out, which allowed Colin Munro to come in and score 33 off 18 balls in a game against Kolkata Knight Riders, leading DC to victory. Gambhir even chose not to take his Rs 2.8 crore salary for that season due to his poor form.

Gautam Gambhir Takes Brief Leave For Personal Reasons, Expected To Be Back Before Adelaide Test

November 26, 2024, 4:47 pm

India‘s Senior Men‘s Cricket Team Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir, will leave the team during their tour of Australia temporarily for personal reasons. He is expected to return before the second Test in Adelaide in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

According to The Indian Express, Gambhir had intimated the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his decision to head back home and rejoin the side prior to the Adelaide Test. The BCCI seems to have acceded to his plea, as one of its officials confirmed, “Gambhir has informed us that he will be travelling back home and will join the team before the start of the second Test. He has cited personal reasons, and the BCCI has accepted his request.”

Before the second Test, India will head to Canberra on Wednesday for a two-day pink-ball warm-up match starting Saturday. In Gambhir‘s absence, the coaching team—bowling coach Morne Morkel, assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, and fielding coach T Dilip—will oversee training under skipper Rohit Sharma.

Rohit, who missed the first Test in Perth with the birth of his second child, joined the side on Day 4. However, India registered a massive 295-run victory under Jasprit Bumrah‘s captaincy. His five-wicket haul, along with tons from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli, made sure that the team won the match.

At Optus Stadium in Perth, the crowd rose to their feet as Virat Kohli asserted his 30th Test century, further solidifying India’s hold on the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Kohli faced 143 balls to score an unbeaten 100 before stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah declared India’s second innings on the third day.

Kohli received a standing ovation as he walked back to the dressing room, but the moment that everyone remembers in front of his camera lens is the emotional hug that was given to him by the head coach Gautam Gambhir as Kohli proved his mastery in Australian conditions. Kohli’s wife, Anushka Sharma, was present at the stadium and could not help but be visibly moved as the team applauded his achievement. The BCCI shared a video of this emotional moment on X.

Kohli expressed his gratitude for Anushka’s support during challenging times. “Anushka has been right by my side through thick and thin. So, she knows everything that goes on behind the scenes. What goes on in the head when you don’t play as well or make a few mistakes. I just want to contribute to the team’s cause. I am not a guy who wants to hang around just for the sake of it. I take pride in performing for my country. The fact that she is here makes it even more special for me,” Kohli told the broadcasters.

Gautam Gambhir : India ‘Not Thinking About WTC Final’, Aim Is To Win Test Series In Australia

November 11, 2024, 11:47 pm

Indian men’s cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir says it is not that the side is eyeing qualification for the WTC 2025 final. Rather, the focus is on the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia, for which the side wants to perform well and win the overseas assignment.

India needs to win at least four of the five Tests against Australia if it has to qualify for the WTC 2025 final, scheduled to be held in June next year at Lord’s. “It is not a priority series,” Gambhir said.

“Honestly, we’re not looking at what’s going to happen in the World Test Championship, whether we are going to qualify or not. Every series is important. You know, when you play for your country, when you represent your country, every series is important, irrespective of what has happened in the past. For us, I think it is two good teams playing against each other. We are absolutely keen to go out there and perform and try to win the series,” Gambhir said at India’s pre-departure press conference in Mumbai on Monday, November 11.

India slipped to the No. 2 position in the WTC 2023-25 points table as it lost three successive Tests on its home soil against New Zealand. If India can win at least four Tests against Australia then it automatically seals its place at the top two and guarantees its final. This way it will not need to rely on other teams’ performances.

India played the WTC final in 2021 and lost it followed by losing in 2023. The team lost both times, firstly New Zealand beat India by 8 wickets in Southampton in 2021 and then in 2023, Australia won from India with a margin of 209 runs at the Oval.

BCCI To Grill Gambhir After Breaking Policy To Meet His Demands: Inside The Controversy

November 5, 2024, 5:07 pm

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir is reportedly set to face a review by the BCCI following India’s unexpected 0-3 home series loss to New Zealand, according to The Times of India. Despite India’s historical home-ground advantage, the team struggled, leading the BCCI to re-evaluate the decisions taken since Gambhir assumed his role.

One focal point of the review is the team’s request for rank turners after an initial defeat to New Zealand in Bengaluru, where seam-friendly conditions were blamed for India’s loss. This marked a return to spinner-friendly pitches, despite a shift in strategy earlier in the year when India defeated England 4-1 on more balanced tracks. “The decision to go back to rank turners caught a few people in the board by surprise. The new support staff under Gautam Gambhir will be asked about their vision for taking the team forward,” a source told TOI.

The BCCI has reportedly been accommodating Gambhir’s preferences, appointing his choice of support staff, including Abhishek Nayar, Morne Morkel, and Ryan ten Doeschate. Moreover, Gambhir was granted access to the selection meeting for the upcoming Australia tour, a rare exception in BCCI’s policy, which traditionally excludes coaches from these discussions. “Gautam Gambhir was given access which his predecessors Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid didn’t have… The head coach was allowed to attend considering the magnitude of the tour,” noted PTI.

The review meeting, expected to include Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, will likely address Gambhir’s demands and explore the team’s roadmap moving forward.

Shastri Backs Gambhir: ‘He’ll Learn From Historic Series Loss To New Zealand’

October 27, 2024, 8:39 pm

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has expressed support for current head coach Gautam Gambhir following India’s first-ever home Test series loss to New Zealand. After losing consecutive matches in Bengaluru and Pune, India surrendered the series, drawing criticism from fans towards the coaching staff and captain right before the crucial Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Despite the disappointing outcome, Shastri defended Gambhir, highlighting that he is still early in his coaching career with the national team. “New Zealand have beaten them (India) handsomely in both the Test matches. It’s food for thought (on series loss). He (Gambhir) has just taken over the job. It’s never easy being coach of a team that has such a big following. It’s still early days in his career as a coach. But he’ll soon learn,” Shastri remarked during commentary in the second Test in Pune.

This series marked the first time in 12 years that India lost a Test series at home. In the second Test, New Zealand scored 259 in their first innings and dismissed India for just 156, gaining a 103-run lead. Spinner Mitchell Santner, named Player of the Match, took seven wickets in the first innings. New Zealand then scored 255 in their second innings, setting India a target of 359.

While India began their chase positively, they faltered due to a batting collapse. Santner led the bowling attack again, claiming six wickets as India was bowled out for 245, losing the match by 113 runs and the series with one Test remaining.

Looking ahead, Gambhir and the team will now shift their focus to the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai for the third and final Test, aiming to finish the series on a high note.

Gambhir And Rohit Lead India Past Kanpur Scare: New Zealand Awaits In WTC Final Quest

October 1, 2024, 3:34 pm

A recent weekend brought a mix of rain-soaked tension and cricketing drama as India fought to maintain its chances for a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Following a disappointing couple of washed-out days during the second Test against Bangladesh, India’s path to the final seemed precarious, especially with Sri Lanka achieving a historic 2-0 series sweep against New Zealand at home.

The Rain-Induced Dilemma

India, who were favored to reach the WTC final for the third consecutive time, found their prospects dimming. After two days of rain at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, the likelihood of a draw grew, putting additional pressure on the Indian team. However, relief came on Tuesday as head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma celebrated a crucial Test victory, keeping India’s hopes alive.

A Thrilling Comeback

The weather finally cleared on Monday, allowing play to resume. India’s bowlers made quick work of Bangladesh, taking the remaining seven wickets for just 126 runs. The Indian batters then scored at a breathtaking pace, amassing 285 runs for nine wickets before declaring with 45 minutes left in the day. R. Ashwin led the charge, quickly reducing Bangladesh to 26 for two.

On Tuesday, India took approximately three hours to dismiss Bangladesh for a mere 146 runs in their second innings, setting a target of 95 runs. India successfully chased down the total in just 17.2 overs, with Yashasvi Jaiswal contributing a solid fifty, marking his second consecutive half-century in the match.

The Road Ahead for India

Despite the challenging weekend, India remains at the top of the WTC table with a percentage of 74.24 after winning eight out of 11 matches in this cycle. To secure their place in the WTC final, India needs to clinch just three more victories from their remaining eight Test matches. A clean sweep against New Zealand, who currently sit at the bottom of the table with three wins in eight matches, would guarantee a spot in the final, regardless of the outcomes in their tour of Australia.

India’s upcoming series against New Zealand is set to take place between October 16 and November 5, with matches scheduled in Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai. The team will be eager to capitalize on their recent success and push towards securing a spot in the coveted final.

Gambhir’s Successful Start as Coach

Gautam Gambhir enjoyed a triumphant start to his coaching career with India, having led the team to a resounding victory against Bangladesh by 280 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This win secured India an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.

Stellar Performances by Players

Rishabh Pant marked his return to Test cricket with a remarkable century, scoring 109 runs after recovering from a serious car accident in December 2022. Despite the win, Virat Kohli had a disappointing outing, managing only 6 and 17 runs in his two innings.

Ravichandran Ashwin was the standout performer of the match, earning the ‘Player of the Match’ title for his contributions that included a century (113 runs) and a six-wicket haul, helping India secure victory with more than a day to spare. Shubman Gill also made a significant impact with an unbeaten 119, while all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja played a crucial role with his knock of 86 runs and five wickets throughout the match.

India’s Dominance in World Test Championship

This victory further solidifies India’s position at the top of the World Test Championship table, showcasing the team’s strength and depth in both batting and bowling. As they prepare for the second Test in Kanpur, fans are eager to see if they can continue their dominant form.

‘Relaxed Rancho’: Ashwin Lauds Gambhir For Calm Dressing Room Atmosphere

September 24, 2024, 5:38 am

India’s all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin commended newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir for his “relaxed” approach, which has fostered a lively atmosphere in the dressing room. Ashwin praised the former India opener, expressing confidence that Gambhir would be well-liked by the current squad and future players.

Ashwin’s comments on his YouTube channel followed his first experience working with Gambhir during the Chennai Test against Bangladesh. The star spinner had a remarkable performance in his hometown, scoring a century in the first innings and taking six wickets in the second, leading India to a resounding 280-run win.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin contrasted the coaching styles of Gambhir and his predecessor, Rahul Dravid, while appreciating the effectiveness of both. “I think he is very relaxed. I want to call him ‘relaxed rancho’. There’s no pressure at all. In the morning, there will be a team huddle. He is very relaxed about that as well. He will be like ‘are you coming, please come’. It’s like that,” Ashwin said.

He also highlighted Dravid’s more structured approach: “With Rahul bhai, as soon as we come, he wanted things in order: even a bottle should be kept at a particular place at a particular time. He is very regimented. He wanted things in order.”

In contrast, Ashwin noted Gambhir’s more flexible attitude: “With Gambhir, he doesn’t expect all that. He has a relaxed order. He will be a people’s man. He will capture everybody’s heart. I think he will be loved by the boys.”

Ashwin also lauded captain Rohit Sharma’s leadership, stating, “Also, Rohit is a very good leader who works well with everybody. Even when he is leading the side, we can see that. He is very calm and composed as a leader.”

Gambhir stepped in as Team India’s head coach after Rahul Dravid’s tenure concluded following India’s T20 World Cup victory. Dravid chose not to reapply for the position, and the BCCI appointed Gambhir as his successor in June. Gambhir’s debut assignment saw mixed outcomes, with India winning the T20I series but losing the ODI series in Sri Lanka.

The Chennai Test, the first of India’s 10-match run for the upcoming season, gave Gambhir and his coaching staff a much-needed confidence boost. Ashwin’s standout performance, along with Ravindra Jadeja’s resilient 86 in the first innings, helped India recover from a shaky 144 for 6 to post a commanding 376, thanks to their 199-run partnership.

India continued their dominance with Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional bowling, dismissing Bangladesh for 149. In the second innings, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, both returning to the team, scored centuries, further cementing India’s position.

Ashwin’s praise for Gambhir, combined with the positive outcomes from the Chennai Test, signals a promising start to India’s upcoming season.

The Big Question for Gautam Gambhir: Who Will He Opt for, KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant for Sri Lanka ODI Series?

August 1, 2024, 4:12 pm

The Indian cricket team, under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir, is set to face Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series, beginning on Friday. A key decision looming over the team management is choosing between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter. KL Rahul has been a reliable performer since his return from injury, scoring 834 runs in 21 matches at an average of 69.50, and excelling behind the stumps. His leadership was also evident when he captained India in the ODI series against South Africa. Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, has shown promise since his return to the national fold after a serious accident in 2022, although his recent performances have been inconsistent. The team must weigh Rahul’s consistency against Pant’s explosive potential.

Adding to the complexity is the need to accommodate Shreyas Iyer, a strong performer in the 50-over format, with an impressive record of 846 runs from 20 matches in 2023. If the team decides to include both Rahul and Pant, they will need to find a way to fit Iyer into the playing XI. With Hardik Pandya unavailable due to personal reasons, the team might need to consider all-rounders like Shivam Dube or Riyan Parag at No. 6. Parag’s versatility with the ball, demonstrated by his ability to switch between off-spin and leg-spin, could give him an advantage.

Meanwhile, veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be playing their first ODI series under Gambhir’s coaching. Their performance will be crucial as India looks to bounce back from their defeat in the World Cup final against Australia. Sri Lanka, led by Charith Asalanka, will aim to improve their performance after losing the T20I series to India, although they face the challenge of playing without key pacers Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madhushanka due to injuries.

India’s squad: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, and Harshit Rana.

Sri Lanka’s squad: Charith Asalanka, Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Kamindu Mendis, Janith Liyanage, Nishan Madushka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Akila Dananjaya, Ehsan Malinga, Mohammed Shiraz, and Asitha Fernando, with Kusal Janith, Pramod Madushan, and Jeffrey Vandersay as standbys.

The series promises an exciting contest as both teams seek to fine-tune their strategies ahead of major one-day events like the Champions Trophy.

During Sri Lanka’s run chase, Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis played key roles but could only match India’s score, leading to a super over. Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav’s bowling efforts were pivotal, with each taking two wickets. In the super over, Sri Lanka managed only 2/2, and Suryakumar Yadav secured the win for India with a boundary on the first ball.

Rohit Sharma’s ‘Perfect’ Reaction To Suryakumar Yadav And Gautam Gambhir After India’s T20I Victory Over Sri Lanka

July 31, 2024, 10:05 am

Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir ushered in a new era for Indian cricket with a perfect start, as India defeated Sri Lanka in the third and final T20I match to secure a 3-0 series whitewash. This victory marks India’s first T20I whitewash against Sri Lanka in a series of at least three matches held in Sri Lanka, and their third overall.

Following the dramatic win in Pallekele on Tuesday, achieved through a Super Over, Rohit Sharma, set to lead India in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, shared a “perfect” Instagram post celebrating the team’s success.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Rohit Sharma (@rohitsharma45)

India entered the final game with the series already clinched, having won the first two matches. Four changes were made to the playing XI for the final match. Despite being put to bat first on a pitch affected by rainfall over the previous 24 hours, India faced early setbacks, finding themselves at 30 for four within the powerplay and 48 for five shortly after. Shubman Gill and Riyan Parag then formed a crucial fifty-run partnership, and Washington Sundar’s handy cameo helped India post a competitive total of 137 on a spinning track.

Sri Lanka’s openers began the chase cautiously, building a fifty-run stand. The two Kusals, Perera and Mendis, set a solid foundation, appearing to guide the hosts to a consolation win. However, Sri Lanka’s batting lineup crumbled under pressure in the death overs, failing to score 9 runs off the final 12 balls against part-timers Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav.

In the Super Over, Washington Sundar dashed Sri Lanka’s hopes by taking two wickets for just two runs in three deliveries. India wrapped up the chase with the first ball, completing the whitewash over Sri Lanka.

Rohit Sharma celebrated the victory by sharing a photo from the trophy celebration on Instagram, captioning it, “Perfect start. Well done Team India.”

Rohit Sharma Returns After Prolonged Break

Ahead of the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka from August 3-7, Rohit Sharma arrived in Colombo on Sunday.. This series will mark his first match since winning the T20 World Cup last month in Barbados, following his retirement from the international format. It will also be his first appearance in ODIs since the 2023 World Cup final loss against Australia in Ahmedabad.

The ODI series will kick off India’s preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy next year, as the team looks to build on their recent successes and continue their winning momentum.

Ex Pak Captain Says This Player Would Have Been a Better Captain Than Suryakumar Yadav

July 25, 2024, 3:45 pm

India is gearing up to face Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series starting from July 27, marking Gautam Gambhir’s first series as the new head coach. One of Gambhir’s significant early decisions was appointing Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement after the successful T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. This move surprised many, as Hardik Pandya, the vice-captain during the World Cup, was expected to take over.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif voiced his opinion on the matter, suggesting that if Hardik wasn’t the first choice, Rishabh Pant should have been made captain instead. Latif criticized the fitness argument used to sideline Hardik, pointing out that many historically great captains have had fitness issues.

Key Points:

– Gautam Gambhir’s First Series: This series marks Gambhir’s debut as head coach.

– New T20I Captain: Suryakumar Yadav was chosen over Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain during the T20 World Cup 2024.

– Rashid Latif’s Opinion: Latif believes Rishabh Pant would have been a better choice if Hardik was not considered, criticizing the fitness excuse.

– Hardik Pandya’s Role: Despite not being captain, Pandya remains a crucial part of the team. However, he has opted out of the ODI series for personal reasons and has been asked to play in the Duleep Trophy to prove his bowling fitness.

India Squad for T20I Series vs. Sri Lanka:

“Rohit Will Faint in South Africa”: India Legend Lambasts Gautam Gambhir, Explains How the Coach Backtracked

July 25, 2024, 2:27 pm

Gautam Gambhir’s recent appointment as head coach of the Indian cricket team has sparked debate over the future roles of veteran players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both Rohit and Virat announced their retirements from T20I cricket following the T20 World Cup final last month. While BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed Rohit will captain the team for the ICC Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship in 2025, their availability for the 2027 ODI World Cup remains uncertain.

In a press conference, Gambhir emphasized that Rohit and Virat still have significant cricket left in them, reiterating their importance to the team. However, former Indian cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth criticized Gambhir for what he described as a U-turn. Srikkanth noted that before the T20 World Cup 2024, Gambhir had suggested that senior players who did not perform would not have a place in his team. Now, as head coach, Gambhir has praised Rohit and Virat, stating they have much cricket left to offer.

Srikkanth expressed doubts about Rohit Sharma’s ability to play in the 2027 World Cup, considering his age and fitness. He mentioned that while Virat Kohli, known for his high fitness standards, might still feature in the 2027 World Cup, it would be challenging for Rohit, who would be 40 by then, to maintain the necessary fitness levels.

Srikkanth commented, “He is a good player, but his age is 37 presently, and the next ODI World Cup is three more years ahead. He will be 40 years old then. I mean, unless you are a super-fit person like MS Dhoni or Sachin Tendulkar, you can’t play World Cup at 40s. Yeah, Virat Kohli could play in the 2027 World Cup, in my opinion, for sure. But for Rohit, Mr. Gambhir, you went overboard; he will faint in South Africa.”

The 2027 ODI World Cup will be hosted in Africa, with South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia jointly hosting the tournament. This raises further questions about the fitness and readiness of senior players like Rohit Sharma to compete in such a physically demanding event.
