RG KAR CASE: Was it rape or gang-rape? Calcutta HC asks CBI

The Calcutta High Court asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday to clearly spell out whether the 31-year-old trainee doctor killed at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year was raped by a single person or gang-raped.

The Court was hearing a plea filed by the parents of the deceased doctor, seeking a fresh investigation into the incident. The parents sought a probe into the larger conspiracy around the rape of the victim and subsequent cover-up by the college authorities.

The High Court, which has also asked the agency if there was a conspiracy behind the crime, also ordered CBI to produce the case diary related to its investigation on the next date of hearing on March 28.

Justice Ghosh asked CBI if it ever found reasons to believe that the crime was committed by more than one person and not just just Sanjoy Roy, a former Kolkata police civic volunteer who was convicted for her rape and murder in January and handed down a life term by the Sealdah trial court.

Justice Ghosh also directed the CBI to explain the suspected conspiracy to cover up the crime.

“You must tell me if at any time you took into consideration an investigation under section 70 of BNS (gang rape)? The accused was convicted. What was the nature of your charge? Was it a sole accused or a gang rape? You must make it clear,” justice Ghosh told deputy solicitor general Rajdeep Majumder who appeared for CBI.

The High Court had taken the case from the Kolkata Police which had arrested Sanjoy Roy, and handed it over to the CBI on August 13, days after protests across the country

On September 14, CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh, the then principal of the medical college and Abhijit Mondal, the then officer-in-charge of Tala police station on charges of tampering with the evidence.

But the CBI did not file a charge sheet against them in connection with the doctor’s murder. A charge sheet was, however, filed against Ghosh in November last year accusing him of corruption at the hospital.

Justice Ghosh said: “If you ever believed more than one person was involved, who were the people in your mind? You must tell the court. Was it gang rape or destruction of evidence where multiple people were involved?”

Lawyer Sudipta Moitra, who represented the petitioners, told the court that there is no evidence that the CBI formed a special investigation team (SIT) for the case.

Lawyer and Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee, who appeared for the State Government, told the court that the Government did not have any objection to further investigation but asked if there was any legal provision for it since the Sealdah court proceedings ended with Roy’s conviction after a 57-day in-camera trial.

The victim’s parents told reporters that the CBI did not make any attempts to expose the conspiracy behind the crime.

“My daughter was constantly protesting against corruption at the hospital. She used to say many patients died because of spurious medicines. The conspirators wanted to silence her. We told this to the CBI officials several times but they did not pay heed,” the victim’s mother said outside the High Court.

While the hearing was on, a few hundred doctors and nurses marched to the CBI office at the Salt Lake CGO Complex alleging that the agency did not carry out a thorough investigation.

The victim’s parents recently met the CBI director in Delhi and sought a fresh investigation and also moved the Supreme Court which directed the High Court to hear the petition.

In January this year, the trial court convicted and sentenced the prime accused, Sanjay Roy on charges of rape and murder after an in-camera trial that lasted 57 days.

Roy, a civic volunteer with the city police, was arrested by the Kolkata Police on August 10, 2024 a day after the incident. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

In February this year, the High Court dismissed the appeal filed by the State government seeking the death penalty for Roy. A bench of Justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashid refused to grant permission to the State to file such an appeal since it was the CBI which had probed the matter and conducted the prosecution.

It thus allowed the CBI to file an appeal for the same punishment.

Israeli Tourist and Indian Woman Gang-Raped Near Hampi; Police Hunt for Suspects

A 27-year-old Israeli tourist and a 29-year-old Indian woman, who runs a homestay, were reportedly gang-raped while stargazing near Hampi in Karnataka. The incident took place around 11 PM on Thursday near Sanapur Lake.

The two women were with three male tourists after dinner. Their group included an American and two Indian men from Odisha and Maharashtra. While they were enjoying the night sky and listening to music, three men arrived on a motorcycle. They came up to the group, claiming they needed petrol.

Situation Turns Violent

The homestay owner later filed a complaint. She said the men first asked about nearby petrol stations. When the group said there were none, the strangers demanded ₹100. The tourists refused to give money.

That’s when the men turned aggressive. They spoke in Kannada and Telugu, hurled abuses, and then attacked.

Brutal Assault

The attackers overpowered the two women and sexually assaulted them. They also pushed the three male tourists into a canal. Two men suffered injuries. The Odisha-based tourist remains missing.

Police Investigation Underway

Authorities registered a case at Gangavathi Rural Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Charges include gang rape, extortion, dacoity with intent to cause grievous harm, and attempted murder.

Both survivors are receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

Police Tracking the Suspects

Investigators have identified the accused. Six police teams are searching for them. A senior officer assured, “Efforts are underway to apprehend the accused at the earliest. We will bring them to justice.”

Kolkata rape murder case: CBI Files Chargesheet Against Sanjay Roy

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, the primary accused in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Roy, a civic volunteer with the local police, allegedly committed the crime on August 9 when the victim went to sleep in the hospital’s seminar room during a break.

Chargesheet doesn’t include gang rape

According to officials, the charge sheet, submitted to a special court in Kolkata, does not include charges of gang rape, suggesting that Roy acted alone. However, the CBI has stated that the investigation remains open.

The 31-year-old trainee doctor’s body was found in the seminar room on the morning of August 9. Roy was arrested by the Kolkata Police on August 10 and remanded to police custody until August 24. The case was handed over to the CBI following an order from the Calcutta High Court on August 13.

Nurse Escapes Gang-Rape Attempt, Cuts Doctor’s Private Parts With Blade in Bihar Hospital

In a shocking incident at a private hospital in Bihar, a nurse narrowly escaped a gang-rape attempt after injuring one of the attackers, a doctor, with a blade. The incident took place at the RBS Health Care Centre in Gangapur, Samastipur district, under the Musrighararari police station limits.

According to police reports, the nurse was finishing her duties on Wednesday night when hospital administrator Dr. Sanjay Kumar, along with two associates, Sunil Kumar Gupta and Awadhesh Kumar, attempted to assault her. All three men were reportedly drunk at the time. In a bid to free herself, the nurse slashed Dr. Kumar’s private parts with a blade before fleeing and hiding in a nearby field, from where she called the police.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Pandey praised the nurse’s courage and quick thinking, saying her actions were “praiseworthy.” Police arrived promptly at the scene and arrested all three suspects, including Dr. Kumar. The men had allegedly locked the hospital from the inside and disabled the CCTV cameras before attempting the assault.

Authorities recovered crucial evidence, including the blade used by the nurse, blood-stained clothes, liquor bottles, and mobile phones. Since Bihar is a dry state, the men will also face charges under the state’s prohibition laws. The incident comes just a month after a trainee doctor was raped and murdered in Kolkata, sparking nationwide outrage.

14-year-old Dalit girl was gang-raped by two and bricked

An attempt was made to kill the 14-year-old Dalit girl and hide the crime, according to reports of gang-rape by two males who took turns attacking her and hitting her with bricks. Late Saturday night, in the Bakshi Ka Talab neighbourhood, the horrifying occurrence occurred. The following day, a FIR was filed.

The second attacker’s identity is still being investigated, although one of the suspects has been identified by police as coming from the same hamlet.

The girl was attacked by the two males when they came upon her at the Asti crossing at 8 p.m. They started following her, and the police complaint states that they dragged her into the bushes and alternated between raping her when they discovered her on a lonely stretch. The victim further claimed that during the attack, they made derogatory remarks based on caste.

The girl narrated, “They hit my face with a brick intending to kill me.” “They repeatedly hit my back and other body parts, leading me to believe I was dead.”

The youngster was severely hurt, but she was able to regain consciousness soon after the incident and make it home, where she told her family. Chhattisgarh: Six Arrested After Woman Is Gang-Raped In Raigarh’s Pusaur

Police have detained six individuals in connection with an alleged sexual assault that occurred under the jurisdiction of Pusaur Police Station in Raigarh on Tuesday. The assault reportedly took place on the eve of Rakshabandhan when a group of men allegedly abducted a woman and assaulted her near a pond.

The woman, who was en route to a festival in Raigarh at the time of the incident, was forcibly taken by the group of men. “The woman had left her village to attend a festival in Raigarh when she was abducted and sexually assaulted by a group of men. Once we were notified, we promptly began our investigation,” stated Divyang Patel, the Superintendent of Police for Raigarh. The assault occurred approximately twenty kilometers from the district headquarters.

The perpetrators fled after the assault, but the woman managed to return home and report the incident to her family. She lodged a complaint at the Pusaur police station on August 20. The Superintendent of Police confirmed that action was taken immediately after being informed.

“The case was registered as soon as we received the report. An investigative team was formed, leading to the arrest of the six accused,” Patel added. The police have identified the suspects and conducted interrogations following their arrest.

Orchestra dancer from Chhattisgarh gang-raped in Jharkhand’s Palamu; two held

A 21-year-old member of an orchestra troupe from Chhattisgarh was reportedly gang-raped by her fellow co-artists in Jharkhand’s Palamu district, as per the police.

The incident occurred on Saturday night, where three men, all acquainted with the survivor, allegedly gang-raped her in Palamu district. The survivor filed an FIR on Sunday, accusing the trio of the crime.

Two of the perpetrators have been arrested, with a search underway for the third, as per a police official.

“A gang rape case was registered by an orchestra dancer in the Bishrampur area of Palamu district yesterday. Two of the three accused have been arrested. The 21-year-old victim is a resident of Chhattisgarh. Accused persons and victim are known to each other and work together in the same orchestra group,” the police stated.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the third suspect, according to Palamu Police.

In a separate incident last week, a Spanish national was raped by seven individuals in Dumka while touring the country with her husband.

Based on the survivor’s statement, a case has been registered under sections 328 and 376 (2) of the IPC.

Previously, another foreign tourist was allegedly gang-raped in Dumka district, where she and her husband were spending the night in a tent. Three individuals have been arrested, while a search is ongoing for the remaining four suspects.

Spanish woman, on bike tour with her husband, gangraped in Jharkhand’s Dumka

A Spanish woman, who was on a bike tour with her husband, was sexually assaulted by a group of men in Jharkhand’s Dumka on Friday night. The woman became a victim of a gang rape in at Kurumahat, where the tourist couple was spending the night in a tent near the Hansdiha police station.

SP Pitambar Singh Kherwar reached the crime scene with a team of police officials and later three persons were taken into custody. “The gangrape incident happened on Friday night,” Santosh Kumar, a sub divisional police officer in Jarmundi, told PTI.

Speaking under anonymity, a second official indicated that the tragic incident included seven or eight young men, all residents of the area.

The woman was reportedly going to Nepal on a bike excursion with her spouse. The pair was traveling from Dumka in Jharkhand to Bhagalpur in Bihar when they decided to take a night halt. She was attacked and gang-raped when sleeping in her tent.

In her police complaint, the woman stated that she and her husband set up a tent at a barren place close to Hansdiha Market in Dumka. The woman said that some young people from the area forced their way into the tent while she was asleep and started raping her one by one. The accused also brutally thrashed her, according to the woman’s complaint.

She was brought to Saraiyahat CHC for treatment after the event. A case has been registered and police has launched a massive manhunt to track and apprehend the culprits.

False job promise: Three arrested in Noida gang-rape case

On December 1, the Noida police arrested three individuals in connection with a disturbing gang-rape incident that transpired in June 2023. The victim, aged 26, was allegedly sexually assaulted under the pretext of a job opportunity and later blackmailed, prompting her to file a complaint on December 30. Two suspects, Ravi and Mehmi, are currently evading arrest.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Ravi, Azad, Vikas, Rajkumar, and Mehmi. According to the Noida police, “On the basis of the complaint given by a victim aged 26 years at Noida Police Station Sector 39 on December 30, 2023, a case has been registered against five accused in the gang rape incident in the name of providing a job. In the course of the investigation, a medical examination of the victim was done within 24 hours. The statement of the victim under section 161 and section 164 of CrPC was recorded before the Hon’ble Court.”

The police further stated that, based on the available evidence, a dedicated team was formed, resulting in the arrest of three of the accused, namely Rajkumar, Azad, and Vikas from Gautam Buddha Nagar. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects, Ravi and Mehmi. The victim refrained from reporting the incident immediately due to fear, but the accused continued to blackmail her. The victim eventually came forward on December 30, 2023, at Noida Police Station No. 39.

Taking swift legal action, Noida police officials arrested the three individuals and presented them before the court.

Horrific Gang-Rape of 12-Year-Old Shakes Lucknow; 2 Arrested

In a shocking incident, a 12-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and brutally gang-raped by four assailants in Lucknow. The police have confirmed the arrest of two suspects, with a manhunt underway for the remaining culprits.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) East, Ashish Srivastava, the perpetrators abducted the minor girl and took her approximately one kilometre away to a forest. There, they subjected her to a harrowing ordeal, taking turns to commit the heinous crime. The traumatised victim was later discovered in an unconscious state, not far from her home.

The victim’s mother filed a First Information Report (FIR) against three of the accused following the event. Surprisingly, the mother also claimed that one of the attackers was urging her to arrange a marriage between him and her daughter.

“We have also recorded the statement of the minor, who said she was kidnapped and gang-raped by four people,” stated the deputy commissioner of police.

Based on the mother’s allegation, a case was filed, which resulted in the arrest of two individuals. Efforts are being made to find and catch the remaining two suspects in this heinous act.

Assam: Mentally challenged girl gang-raped in Bhuragaon

Three individuals, including one woman and two men, have been apprehended in connection with the sexual assault of a mentally challenged girl in Bhuragaon, located in Assam’s Morigaon district.

The girl was abducted on September 7 and reportedly subjected to multiple instances of gang rape, as per law enforcement authorities. She was held captive for over two weeks at the residence of another woman named Murshida Begum, according to the police.

During police questioning, the female suspect disclosed that the sexual assault had involved two to three individuals and had taken place within her residence. The arrested woman, along with the two male accomplices involved in the crime, is currently in police custody. Efforts to apprehend other potential suspects are currently in progress.

“For almost 12 to 13 days, the victim was held by the accused, Murshida Begum, in her home, from where the victim was recovered, told ASP Samiran Baishya told the media.

“A missing case was reported at Morigaon Police Station, and accordingly, we started the investigation. We found the missing woman and accordingly arrested a woman named Murshida Begum from where the victim was recovered in connection with the case,” he said.

“During interrogation, the accused woman revealed that there were 2–3 people involved, and we arrested two more accordingly. We produced them in court, and now they’re on police remand. During the probe, it was revealed that the victim was molested by two accused persons, and we’re trying to find the other accused as well,” he said, adding, “The accused was produced before the court.”

Myanmar woman gang raped in Delhi

A Myanmar woman was allegedly gang raped by 4 people in Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj area, Delhi police informed on Tuesday. The woman alleged that she was made unconscious and was abducted by an auto-rickshaw driver before being gag-raped.

As per the police officials, the woman is a registered refugee. “A case has been registered by the police following her complaint,” a police officer said.

According to the complaint, when the woman was abducted by auto-rickshaw driver, she was visiting somewhere in Southeast Delhi, along with her husband for the treatment of their daughter,. The driver reportedly took her to an isolated location.

The Delhi police officials stated, “We registered a case on February 25 under IPC sections 365, 368, 376d,323, and 506.” The investigation is underway, further details are awaited.

Vijayawada police arrest 3 men for raping beggar woman

Three men have been arrested by the Vijayawada police on Tuesday for allegedly gangraping a woman beggar. Meanwhile, for the treatment, the woman has been shifted to a hospital for treatment. At Penamaluru police station in Vijayawada, the incident took place. The woman was raped for three days. “A woman beggar, who lived under a bridge, was raped for three days. Three men working in the Sulab complex attempted to rape her. All three men were arrested,” the Penamaluru circle inspector said. Moreover, the beggar woman registered a case against the three men. 19-year-old model gang-raped in moving car in Kochi, 4 nabbed

In Kerala’s Kochi, a 19-year-old model was allegedly gang-raped in a moving car late on Thursday night. The Ernakulam Police have detained three men and a woman in connection with the case.

The model was reportedly intoxicated after visiting a pub close to Cochin Shipyard. She was allegedly gang-raped on the way home after the accused offered to drop her off at her home in Kakkanad. Before abandoning her close to her home, the accused assaulted her inside the car as they drove through the city until late at night.

The victim is receiving treatment at Kalamassery Medical College. “There is medical evidence that she was injured. The men left the victim at Kakkanad after committing the crime ” said, a senior police official.

The incident was discovered after it was reported to the police by the private hospital where the victim had been admitted this morning by her roommate.

“There are four accused in this case, we have arrested three men and one woman and booked them under Section 370 of IPC. The accused woman is friends with the victim, who helped other accused. We’re awaiting medical reports to know if any drugs were given to the victim,” CH Nagaraju, CP, Kochi City, said.

An FIR has been lodged under sections 370 and 376, but the accused has not yet been taken into custody.

Veena George, Minister of Health, Women, and Child Development, said that the incident of a girl being gang-raped in Kochi is shocking.

“The incident is strongly condemned. Strict action will be taken against the culprits. I have given directions to ensure adequate treatment for the girl,” the minister said.

Ghaziabad gang rape case fabricated, 3 held

In the alleged abduction and gang rape case of a 38-year-old Delhi woman in Ghaziabad, a major twist has come as the police have said that it was fabricated to implicate the accused over an ongoing property dispute.

Meanwhile, three accomplices have been arrested by the police for hatching the conspiracy.

Meerut range Inspector-General of Police Praveen Kumar said, “An acquaintance of the complainant woman, Azad, and two other accomplices, Gaurav and Afzal, had planned this (gang rape) in a dispute over a property. All three were arrested. The woman is also involved in the conspiracy. Action will be taken against her too.”

“As soon as information regarding the incident was received at Nandgram police station, the victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. Three people have been arrested in the case,” IG Praveen Kumar said.

The matter came to the light when a woman was found lying in a pool of blood in a jute bag.

“A car and other materials have also been recovered. Further investigation is underway,” IG Praveen Kumar added.

Moreover, the gang raped in a complaint filed by the woman according to the police.

“We got the information about the gang rape two days ago in which a woman had complained about the incident. As per the rape survivor, all the accused were known to her and a property dispute between the two has come to light,” Superintendent of Police (SP) City Ghaziabad Nipun Aggarwal said.

Earlier on 16 September woman was abducted while she was returning from a birthday party after which five men in Ghaziabad gang raped her over two days.

SP Nipun further said, “After her brother dropped her off, 5 people -who were known to her- took her away and gang-raped her. FIR was registered and four people were nabbed. It is being said that they have a property dispute and the matter is sub-judice. We are taking all necessary action.”

“On October 18, police in Nandgram, Uttar Pradesh received information that a woman was lying near Ashram Road. They took her to the hospital. She’s a resident of Delhi and had come to her brother’s residence in Nandgram,” SP, Ghaziabad said.
