Their friendly interaction, dubbed #Melodi online, gained attention. Modi also emphasized energy security and Global South priorities during his sixth G7 participation.
</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the margins of the 51st G7 Summit, which took place in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada. The two leaders’ encounter again became viral on social media, showing the increasing bonhomie between them.

A clip from the summit presented PM Modi warmly embracing Meloni with a hug, an exchange of words, and a brief handshake. Revealing his optimism regarding India–Italy relations, PM Modi affirmed that the relationship between the two nations is becoming even stronger and will only continue to grow, yielding common advantages.

Fully agree with you, PM Giorgia Meloni. India’s friendship with Italy will continue to get stronger, greatly benefitting our people!@GiorgiaMeloni https://t.co/LaYIIZn8Ry

Their warm rapport has already enthralled social media users, with the hashtag #Melodi trending. Selfies and videos of the two leaders have already gone viral in the past, such as one taken during the COP28 summit in Dubai. Meloni had captioned in that post, \”Good friends at COP28, #Melodi.” At the G20 summit in India too, netizens had cut pieces of their interactions into video clips with Bollywood tunes and funny captions, adding further buzz online about their chemistry.

The meeting of the leaders emphasizes the enhancement of diplomatic relations between India and Italy, particularly in vital areas like sustainability, clean energy, and industrial cooperation.

PM Modi landed in Canada previously on Monday (local time) as a part of his three-nation visit, which commenced in Cyprus and will end in Croatia. The visit is his first to Canada in ten years and his sixth consecutive visit to the G7 Summit.

When he landed at Calgary airport, the Indian Prime Minister was given a ceremonial welcome. India’s acting High Commissioner to Canada, Chinmoy Naik, was there to greet him.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney received PM Modi officially at the summit site, the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge.

Tweeting on X, PM Modi said, “Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit. Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in mainline G7 talks on the future of energy security, informed Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. The discussions will revolve around the issues such as diversification, cutting-edge technology, infrastructure, and investment to provide affordable and accessible energy in an evolving global context.

At PM @MarkJCarney’s invitation, PM @narendramodi reaches Alberta, Canada to attend the G7 Summit. PM will be contributing to @G7 deliberations on the future of energy security, such as diversification, technology, infrastructure and investment, so that access and affordability are ensured in an evolving world. PM will also have a few bilateral meetings on the sidelines,” Jaiswal tweeted on X.

PM Modi’s visit comes at a crucial juncture in India–Canada relations, which had seen recent diplomatic strain. His presence at the G7 Summit not only reflects India’s global engagement but also underscores its commitment to representing the interests of the Global South.

</excerpt>

After months of tense diplomatic ties, India and Canada have agreed to reinstate high commissioners in each other’s capitals. The resolution came after a “positive and constructive” interaction between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the margins of the 51st G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the news. “The resumption of high commissioners is the beginning in calibrated steps to restore stability to this very important relationship,” Misri said in a video message.

He noted that the leaders talked about the significance of bolstering India-Canada ties, based on common democratic values, the rule of law, and flourishing people-to-people connections.

India and Canada Leaders Agree to Resume Diplomatic Dialogues

This decision to restore top diplomats is the first step in an overall blueprint to repair relations that had dived last year. Misri affirmed that the two countries would restart senior and working-level talks on numerous sectors such as trade, connectivity, and cultural cooperation in due course.

In consideration of the trade talks between the two nations, which are at the moment suspended, the two leaders also agreed to order their officials to take it up on an early date,” Misri stated, showing that attempts are being made to restart formal trade negotiations that have been suspended amidst tensions.

India-Canada relations hit a diplomatic low in 2023 when New Delhi recalled its high commissioner and expelled five Canadian diplomats. Ottawa attributed the murder of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar to Indian officials, prompting India to vehemently reject the claim and take action in response.

Canada’s Statement Affirms Focus on Bilateral Relations

Canada issued an official statement after the meeting, maintaining a similar tone. It stated, “The discussion reaffirmed the importance of Canada-India ties based upon mutual respect, the rule of law, and a commitment to the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The Canadian side confirmed that both countries have agreed to appoint new high commissioners and resume normal consular services for nationals and businesses.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also spoke of matters on the G7 agenda, such as transnational crime, international security, and the rules-based international order.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Alberta, in a sign of moving towards repairing bilateral relations that had strained sharply in recent times under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

During their meeting, PM Modi highlighted the significance of India-Canada relations and declared, “We will work together to strengthen democratic values.” The interaction follows strained relations over the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023 and Trudeau’s contentious accusations against India.

Had an excellent meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Complimented him and the Canadian Government for successfully hosting the G7 Summit. India and Canada are connected by a strong belief in democracy, freedom and rule of law.

Both Leaders Reaffirm Bilateral Commitment

As per a formal announcement by the Canadian Prime Minister’s office, the two leaders reaffirmed their mutual respect, the rule of law, and sovereignty. They also talked about making Indo-Pacific partnerships stronger, trade, energy security, and supply chains.

In an X post, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “PM reaffirmed India’s position on combating terror & expressed gratitude to the leaders for denouncing the horrific Pahalgam terror attack. He called upon them to mobilise international action against terror & emphasised the need to take severe action against those who abet & harbour terror.

Modi also emphasised India’s initiatives towards clean energy, such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), and the Global Biofuels Alliance, while emphasising the need for a green and sustainable energy path.

Mark Carney Welcomes Modi, Prioritises Security and AI

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney termed it a “great honour to host” PM Modi and reiterated that their shared commitment is to tackle energy security, artificial intelligence, terrorism, and threats to the rules-based world order.

Carney also brought up G7 priorities like transnational crime, oppression, and international cooperation on global security in the conversation.

Both Countries to Appoint New High Commissioners

As a concrete outcome of the meeting, India and Canada agreed to appoint new high commissioners, signalling a return to regular diplomatic engagement and citizen services.

PM Modi’s visit to Alberta, his first since the diplomatic standoff last year, came at Carney’s invitation. While India is not a G7 member, its participation highlights Canada’s intent to reset bilateral relations.

Trump Accuses Macron of Spreading False G7 Narrative, Calls Him ‘Publicity-Seeking Emmanuel’

<excerpt>Trump says French President Emmanuel Macron has “no idea” why he left G7 early and dismisses Iran ceasefire claims as false and misleading.
</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump has brushed off French President Emmanuel Macron’s assertion that he departed the G7 Summit in Canada prematurely to craft an Iran-Israel ceasefire. Trump described the actual reason for his premature return to Washington as “much bigger” than a ceasefire and accused Macron of craving publicity and disseminating misinformation.

He made the comments on Truth Social soon after the White House confirmed his premature departure. The spat highlights intense diplomatic strains in the midst of a growing Middle East crisis.

Trump Denies Macron’s Ceasefire Remark

Emmanuel Macron had informed journalists that the US had made a diplomatic proposal to Iran. He stated, “There was an offer made for a meeting and an exchange.” He further added, “If the United States can get a ceasefire, it is a very good thing.”

But Trump was quick to dismiss that. On Truth Social, he posted, “Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, falsely said that I departed the G7 Summit, in Canada, to return to DC to work on a ‘cease fire’ between Israel and Iran.”

He asserted definitively, “Wrong! He has no notion why I am headed today to Washington, but it has absolutely nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much larger than that. Whether intentionally or not, Emmanuel always comes out wrong. Stay Tuned!”

White House Confirms Early Departure

US President Trump had originally intended to remain in Canada through late Tuesday. But the White House rescheduled. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed, “President Trump will head back to Washington tonight so he can address several pressing matters.”

She made no reference to a ceasefire or elaborate on the need.

Trump Cranks Up Pressure on Iran

Even at the summit, Trump indicated increasing pressure on Iran. He tweeted on Truth Social: “Everyone should immediately leave Tehran!”

Although he did not explain, the tweet implied a potential escalation. In his comments to journalists, Trump said he could broker a deal to stop the fighting, which started last week.

Trump’s reaction to Macron reveals a widening divide among influential Western partners. While France advocates for diplomacy, Trump portends a tougher, high-risk strategy. His failure to define the “much bigger” motive contributes to international tension and raises doubts regarding US strategy within the Middle East.

Trump Wants G7 to Become G9 by Including Russia and China

<excerpt>Trump claims Russia’s expulsion from G8 triggered Ukraine war, now wants both Russia and China included in an expanded G7.
</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump has again caused international headlines when he called for enlarging the G7 group. Addressing the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, Trump indicated that he would like the G7 to be the G8 once again, with Russia included. He even went as far as proposing making it a G9 and including China.

Trump attributed previous leaders with expelling Russia in 2014 and argued that the Ukraine war would not have occurred if Russia had stayed within the bloc. Even though he previously used harsh rhetoric against China, he now also advocates for including it. His comments raise an eyebrow, not only because of their message but also because they are factually wrong and politically ironic.

Trump Defends Russia, Blames Obama and Trudeau

Trump defended Russia’s return by arguing that the 2014 expulsion of Russia from the G8 resulted in the current war in Ukraine. He directly pointed fingers at former US President Barack Obama and former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau for expelling Russia.

“The G7 used to be the G8. Barack Obama and a guy named Trudeau didn’t want to have Russia in,” said Trump.

But did not become PM until 2015.—following Russia’s expulsion. Russia invaded Crimea and Ukraine, which led to its expulsion from the bloc—not the other way around. The invasion occurred while Russia was yet a member of the bloc.

Putin Was “Very Insisted,” Says Trump

Trump did assert that Russian President Vladimir Putin was very insulted by the expulsion. “Putin was highly offended when he got expelled from the G8 as I would be, as you would be,” Trump stated.

He contended that this move drove Russia further from diplomatic talks. He maintained that if Russia were still part of the group—or if Trump were president—Ukraine would never have experienced war.

Trump Also Calls for China in G7

Trump also expressed support for China to join the group in a surprising switch. “If someone is willing to propose China coming in, I believe we propose that you want to have individuals that you can converse with,” he said.

This comes despite the fact that many within his inner circle have repeatedly named China as the largest geopolitical threat.

G7’s Historical Context

The G7 started in 1975 as the G6 consisting of the US, UK, France, West Germany, Italy, and Japan. It added Canada in 1976 to become G7. Russia joined in 1997 to become the G8 but was suspended in 2014 for annexing Crimea. The EU has participated since 1977 as an unlisted member with all privileges short of the right to chair or host.

Trump’s summons to restore and strengthen the bloc offends existing diplomatic conventions. His revisionist perspective on history and contentious effort to bring Russia and China on board are indicative of his mercurial foreign policy agenda. When tensions in the world run high, his words can find adherents in some and vociferous opposition in others.

</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump dismissed reports that he left the G7 Summit in Canada to push for peace talks between Israel and Iran. In a social media post, he criticized French President Emmanuel Macron, saying the French leader was “publicity seeking” and had “mistakenly said” that he left the summit to return to Washington for ceasefire discussions.

He also added that “whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong,” and asked people to “stay tuned.”

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron had told reporters that an offer had been made by the US for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. He said there was an opportunity “especially to have a ceasefire and to initiate broader discussions.”

Macron also noted that “if the United States of America can achieve a ceasefire, it is a very good thing,” and that France would support such an effort, expressing that “we wish for it.”

Trump Firm on Iran’s Nuclear Threat

Trump had already voiced his hardline stance on Iran before the G7 controversy. In another Truth Social post, he argued that “Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign,” calling the missed opportunity a “shame” and “a waste of human life.”

He added that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” a warning he said he has repeated many times. He also urged people to “immediately evacuate Tehran.”

Reinforcing his nationalistic stance, Trump said in another post that “America First means many great things, including the fact that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” and concluded with “Make America Great Again.”

G7 Backs Israel’s Right to Defend, Blames Iran

Meanwhile, leaders of the G7 nations issued a joint statement from the summit in Canada, reaffirming their commitment to Middle East peace. They stated that “Israel has a right to defend itself,” and emphasized their support for the country’s security.

The G7 also highlighted the need to protect civilians during the conflict. In the same statement, they blamed Iran for destabilizing the region, declaring that “Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror.”

They stressed that “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” and urged that resolving the Iranian crisis should lead to “a broader de-escalation of hostilities,” including a ceasefire in Gaza. They further pledged to “remain vigilant” regarding effects on global energy markets and said they were ready to act with other partners to “safeguard market stability.”

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Kananaskis, Canada, on Tuesday to attend the G7 Summit. This is his first visit to Canada in ten years.

He flew in from Cyprus on Monday evening (local time) as part of his ongoing three-nation tour, accepting an invitation from Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Key Focus: Global Issues at G7

The G7 leaders will discuss major global matters during the two-day summit from June 16 to 17. These include energy security, technology, and innovation.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, “At the Summit, the Prime Minister will exchange views with leaders of G-7 countries, other invited outreach countries and Heads of International Organisations on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues.”

This visit marks Modi’s sixth straight G7 participation, showing India’s growing involvement in major global conversations.

Modi to Hold Bilateral Talks

Besides the summit, PM Modi will also meet with world leaders in one-on-one meetings. These talks come just over a month after India launched Operation Sindoor, a military strike targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in response to the April 22 terrorist attacks in Pahalgam.

These sideline discussions are expected to cover defense, regional stability, and strategic partnerships.

A Chance to Mend India-Canada Ties

Modi’s visit is also significant for India-Canada relations, which hit a low last year. The strain followed Canada’s unfounded claims accusing India of involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Still, there are recent signs of progress. In the past few months, security officials from both countries resumed dialogue, and talks about appointing new high commissioners have begun.

By inviting Modi to the G7, PM Mark Carney has signaled a desire to repair ties and build a better relationship with India.

New Delhi Sees the Visit as a Positive Step

Last week, the Indian External Affairs Ministry described both countries as “vibrant democracies”. It noted that the upcoming meeting between the two leaders could open the door to rebuilding trust.

The MEA said the interaction would offer a valuable chance to “exchange views and explore pathways” to reset bilateral ties.

Albanese will discuss the deal at the G7 summit in Canada.
</excerpt>

EU defence pact talks are set to begin as Australia takes a significant step toward boosting its global security ties through formal negotiations with the European Union. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, upon arriving in Calgary for the G7 summit, confirmed that his government will explore a strategic defence partnership with the EU.

This proposed agreement aims to deepen collaboration in areas such as cybersecurity, foreign interference, counter-terrorism, and defence technology, reflecting Australia’s growing urgency to respond to evolving international threats.

Australia Eyes EU Pact

Australia will enter formal talks to join the proposed EU defence pact, which may include joint military drills, cybersecurity coordination, counter-terrorism efforts, and cooperation across defence industries. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will present Australia’s interest in advancing the deal during meetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa at the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada.

The proposal gained momentum after Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration mass in Rome introduced the idea, and Defence Minister Richard Marles reinforced Australia’s position in later talks with EU officials. EU ambassador Gabriele Visentin confirmed that negotiations have already started in Brussels. Although Australia initially showed little enthusiasm, it has since adjusted its stance in response to growing global security threats.

Von der Leyen emphasised that Australia and the EU share democratic values, calling the potential pact “predictable” and beneficial for both parties. The agreement would follow a model already used in EU defence deals with the UK, Japan, and South Korea.

Albanese Pushes Defence Deal

After landing in Calgary, Albanese expressed a readiness to cooperate, stating that Australia would explore the agreement constructively to bolster its defence posture. He also appointed Defence Minister Richard Marles and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong to lead further negotiations alongside European counterparts.

The timing aligns with increasing global instability and rising pressure from the United States, particularly former President Donald Trump, for allies to boost defence spending. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned non-compliant nations to “learn to speak Russian,” signalling the urgency of solid defence frameworks.

Australia’s entry into the EU defence pact would represent a strategic shift, positioning the country alongside major global players and enhancing its readiness for emerging threats, especially in technology and foreign influence operations.

</excerpt>

The heads of the Group of Seven (G7) countries- Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, will gather in Kananaskis, Alberta, between June 15 and 17 for the 51st G7 summit. The secluded location in the Canadian Rockies provides a backdrop for tough talk during a time of international uncertainty.

Initially introduced in 1975 as the G6, the bloc evolved into the G7 upon the addition of Canada the following year. Russia was added in 1998 to create the G8 before being suspended in 2014 after annexing Crimea. The bloc is currently the G7.

High Stakes: Middle East Conflict and Trade Tensions

This year’s summit comes amid tensions reaching a boiling point worldwide. Israel’s recent wide-scale attacks on Iranian military and nuclear facilities are likely to be at center stage, as G7 leaders weigh the implications of potentially wider regional war.

Trade will also be on the agenda, especially in view of US President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff policy. Even though Trump recently suspended most of the tariffs he had imposed, China is left out. The question isn’t officially on the agenda but hangs over the summit, especially for member countries expecting to tie down better trade deals ahead of July 9 when Trump’s tariff holiday expires.

Controversy Over Guest Invitations

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, hosting the seventh summit for Canada, has invited some non-G7 leaders as well. Those confirmed to attend include Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was also invited, though his presence is not confirmed.

Modi’s invitation has sparked backlash within Canada. Relations between the two countries have been strained since Canada accused India of involvement in the 2023 killing of a Sikh separatist leader. Sikh organizations in Canada have labeled Modi’s inclusion a “betrayal” and “grave insult.” Carney defended the decision, emphasizing India’s global economic importance and recent progress in bilateral law enforcement cooperation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also invited, as are Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa, and South Korea’s leaders.

Trump’s Trade Legacy and Diplomatic Tensions

Trump’s last G7 visit was contentious. During the 2018 summit in Canada, he suddenly withheld support for the final communiqué and publicly attacked then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This time, observers predict Trump to use a more muted tone.

John Kirton of the G7 Research Group said Trump would not risk disrupting the cohesion of the summit, particularly given that the United States will host the G7 in 2027. “He doesn’t want to kill the golden goose of the G7 before he can stage the ‘biggest, best summit ever,'” Kirton said to NDTV World.

Formal Agenda: Security, Energy, and Future Partnerships

Though, as the G7 2025 summit website indicates, talks will center on three primary issues: protection of the global community, energy security and digital transformation, and forging strategic future partnerships, these stated themes may fall on deaf ears given dramatic escalations of conflict in the Middle East.

As the summit gets underway, the world waits anxiously to discover if the G7 will be able to offer a collective response to deepening global crises.

G7 Leaders Gather in Canada, Aim to Sidestep Tensions with Trump

<excerpt>G7 leaders convene in Canada, hoping to avoid confrontations with President Trump. Key topics include trade, Ukraine, Middle East conflicts, and AI. Canada dropped the joint communique to minimize discord, while world leaders assess Trump’s approach to international cooperation.
</excerpt>

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have convened in Canada’s Canadian Rockies for a three-day summit beginning Sunday, as host country Canada seeks to avoid letting tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump get out of hand. The meeting is taking place at picturesque mountain resort of Kananaskis, about 90 kilometers west of Calgary.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has set out the summit’s central agenda to feature peace and security, creating jobs, and bolstering strategic supply chains of critical minerals. Global hotspots such as the conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East—and a resurgence of tensions over U.S. tariffs are predicted to be at center stage, though.

Diplomats explain that, in order to spare public confrontations, Canada has done away with the customary comprehensive joint communique. The nation will instead issue chair summaries at the conclusion of the summit, highlighting actions the seven member countries; Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—can collectively take.

Past Tensions Loom Large

Memories of the 2018 G7 summit, which Canada also hosted, remain fresh. During that event, Trump walked out in the middle of it and subsequently referred to then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as ‘very dishonest and weak’, ordering the U.S. delegation to pull out its endorsement from the final communique.

This will be a good meeting if Donald Trump doesn’t have a meltdown that interrupts the whole thing. Anything more than that is gravy,” said Roland Paris, a professor of international affairs at the University of Ottawa and former foreign policy advisor to Trudeau.

Josh Lipsky, chairman of international economics at the Atlantic Council, made similar comments: “The best-case scenario. is that there’s no real blow-ups coming out of the back end.”

Carney’s office has not said how recent Israeli attacks on Iran, which have made Trump’s diplomatic position more difficult, will impact the tone of the summit.

Trump’s Global Role Under Scrutiny

As tensions continue to boil, the summit presents President Trump with an early challenge in navigating diplomatic relations. Max Bergmann, a director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, explained, “The bigger questions up here is, essentially, is the United States committed to formats such as the G7? That is going to be the big test.”

Trump, who has been known to joke about annexing Canada, comes in the midst of ongoing trade tensions. Canada has threatened retaliations should U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum not be removed.

A senior American official described the intended agenda for talks, which are on trade, the world economy, energy and cyber security for AI, drug and migrant trafficking, wildfires, and critical minerals. “The president is keen to pursue his objectives in all of these areas including making America’s trade relationships fair and reciprocal,” the official added.

Ukraine, Israel-Palestine Crisis, and International Strategy

The war in Ukraine is an ongoing concern. Although Trump said he could stop fighting with Russia in 24 hours, diplomatic missions under his administration have not succeeded. Ukraine, a traditional friend of Canada, will be attending the summit through President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

As per a Ukrainian official who has been participating in the preparations for the summit, ‘success’ at the moment for Kyiv would be to have a friendly and constructive conversation between Trump and Zelenskiy. The official conceded expectations of a strong joint statement regarding Ukraine have fallen.

A European official cited the G7 and the next NATO summit in The Hague as critical junctures to press Trump to back a bipartisan sanctions bill intended to pressure Russia to the negotiating table. The bill is being sponsored by U.S. senators in tandem with a fresh European sanctions package.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who has been at odds with Trump over climate and Ukraine, said despite disagreements, he has ‘a good, but frank relationship’ with the American president.

Macron also announced that a United Nations summit hosted by France and Saudi Arabia aimed at promoting a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians has been delayed.

High-Level Participation and Bilateral Talks

Outside of the traditional G7 leaders, other leaders from nations like India, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, Australia, South Africa, and Ukraine will be joining segments of the summit. Canadian Senator Peter Boehm, a veteran diplomat and Trudeau’s former personal emissary to the 2018 G7, explained that this year’s summit will last longer than the typical one-week period to allow time for bilateral meetings with Trump.

“Many will want to speak with President Trump on behalf of their own specific interests and concerns,” Boehm stated.

Canada would like to avoid any diplomatic flaps, but the summit is a turning point for world leaders to test Trump’s willingness to cooperate on key global challenges ranging from security and economic justice to war and climate diplomacy.

</excerpt>

Australian PM Anthony Albanese will sit down with US President Donald Trump on the margins of the G7 summit in Canada. It’s their first face-to-face meeting since Trump returned to office. The leaders will discuss the AUKUS defense agreement, escalating trade tariffs, and US calls for increased Australian defense expenditure.

PM Anthony Albanese said the meeting will occur on Tuesday, half-way through the summit.

First Face-to-Face Amid Pressures

PM Anthony Albanese had recently indicated that he was looking forward to a one-on-one meeting with Trump, but he did not provide a timeline. On Saturday, he confirmed the meeting when speaking in Seattle. “We do have a meeting scheduled,” he said. “Clearly, there are problems that the US President is currently facing, but I would hope that we will be able to have a constructive engagement.”

The meeting is at a stressful moment. Washington has just initiated review of the AUKUS agreement. The trilateral agreement signed in 2021 between the US, the UK, and Australia is meant to enhance Indo-Pacific security. It consists of a historic deal for Australia to have nuclear-powered submarines.

AUKUS and Defense Costs Under Review

America has asked Australia to increase its defense budget from 2% to 3.5% of GDP. Albanese confirmed that this issue will be raised in his meeting with Trump. “We’ll increase tariffs, we’ll increase the priority of AUKUS, and we’ll have a conversation as two friends ought,” he added.

Australia has already committed A$368 billion over three decades to the AUKUS submarine agreement. Yet, the Pentagon’s review has injected fresh uncertainty about its future. Canberra restated its commitment, saying it will cooperate very closely with the US during the review.

Strong Alliance Amid Regional Tensions

Anthony Albanese also pointed to previous positive interactions with Trump. “I look forward to building on the very constructive phone conversations that we’ve had,” he said. The two leaders have spoken three times since Trump’s re-election.

On Saturday, in the lead-up to the summit, Australia welcomed a significant U.S. warship to Sydney Harbour. It will join Talisman Sabre, the biggest biennial joint US-Australia military exercise, featuring more than 30,000 troops from 19 nations.

As tensions rise globally, particularly with China’s assertive behavior in the Indo-Pacific, the Albanese-Trump summit may also determine the direction of the future of U.S.-Australia security collaboration.

</excerpt>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday said he plans to go to next week’s Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada, hoping to have a private meeting with US President Donald Trump. Top items on Zelenskyy’s agenda are sustained international support for Ukraine, additional sanctions against Russia, and extended financial aid for Ukraine’s reconstruction after the war.

At a press conference, Zelenskyy stressed Western unity and America’s role in pressuring Russia economically with sanctions. He said that although any decision regarding stronger sanctions is up to the White House, he hopes that a meeting with President Trump at the G7 will make American intentions clearer.

I do hope that in the meanwhile, if no decisions are taken before that, I will understand better how close we are to adopting them,” Zelenskyy added.

President Trump has just recently announced that he is still undecided about whether to support a new Russia sanctions package under consideration in the US Senate.

Zelenskyy also warned that Ukraine would not be able to make up for a possible freeze in American military assistance, emphasizing the need for sustained weapons aid. Addressing with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, he appreciated Germany’s sustained support and announced plans to increase joint arms production with Berlin.

“We need financing, and Germany is one of the states that gets the urgency and honors promises,” Zelenskyy added.

Minister Pistorius confirmed that European military aid to Ukraine this year totals €7 billion ($8.12 billion), with another €1.9 billion awaiting approval in the German parliament.

Zelenskyy’s attendance at the G7 summit has been described as vital in maintaining momentum for Ukraine’s diplomatic campaign, and in pursuing wider international support as the conflict with Russia goes on.

His decision follows previous skipped summits and limited travel. Some Canadian MPs had opposed his invitation due to human rights concerns.
</excerpt>

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (informally referred to as MBS) will not be attending the next Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada, a senior diplomat told Reuters. The crown prince is said to have turned down the invite without giving a reason.

While Saudi Arabia is not a member of the G7, it does get an occasional invitation to attend as a guest. The summit this year is set to take place between June 15 and 17 in Kananaskis in the Canadian Rockies.

MBS has restricted his foreign travel over the past few years. He also refused to join last year’s G7 summit in Italy. A visit to Japan later was delayed at the time due to worries over King Salman’s health.

The media office of the Saudi government could not be reached immediately for comment on his failure to attend the summit by Reuters.

The Globe and Mail, which originally published the story, said that the crown prince’s invitation was uncomfortable for some Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal party members. Avoiding the event would serve to calm domestic political tensions.

Mohammed bin Salman has come under blistering criticism from human rights groups and foreign nations for Saudi Arabia’s human rights record. The kingdom has consistently denied allegations of abuse.

Other non-G7 leaders invited to attend portions of the summit include those from Brazil, South Korea, Australia, South Africa, Mexico, India, and Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump will also attend.

</excerpt>

As Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to attend the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, from June 15 to 17, Canadian political commentator Josh Udall views the visit as more than just symbolic. He believes it presents a chance to rebuild strained India-Canada relations.

A Critical Opportunity for Bilateral Reset

Udall, known for his political insight and behavioural research, described Modi’s visit as a “pivotal moment.” In an interview, he stressed that this summit could serve as a turning point, especially under the new leadership of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. According to Udall, Modi’s likely meeting with Carney might help undo the diplomatic frost that developed during Justin Trudeau’s time in office.

Carney Focuses on Trade, Not Political Tensions

Udall described Carney as someone who specializes in economic strategy. “Mark Carney is the economic guy. He’s the one you call in a crisis,” he said. He suggested that Carney would prioritise restoring economic ties, particularly with India, now the world’s fourth-largest economy. Udall added that Carney’s focus on trade comes with limited awareness of the deeper political issues, especially the Khalistan matter.

Khalistan Issue: A Blind Spot in Canada

Udall openly acknowledged that Canada lacks the political will to address the Khalistan issue—India’s major security concern. He pointed out a serious knowledge gap among Canadians, saying, “Most Canadians have no idea. They’ve heard snippets on CBC or CTV… but they don’t understand the long and complicated history.”

He also noted that Khalistani voices dominate media narratives in Canada, while Indian nationalist or Hindu perspectives rarely find space. “It’s mostly Khalistani voices getting airtime. That dangerously shapes public perception,” he warned.

India’s Image in Canada Under Pressure

Due to limited context, Udall said many Canadians wrongly see India as a meddling foreign force. “To Canadians, India is starting to feel like the new Russia—accused of meddling in elections and domestic politics,” he explained. This view, he argued, makes it very difficult for Canada to act on India’s extradition requests for 26 individuals allegedly linked to extremist activities.

Modi Needs to Tie Security Demands to Trade

In Udall’s view, Modi must connect security demands—such as tackling Khalistani extremism—to economic deals. “If Modi wants movement on the Khalistan issue or extradition demands, he’s going to have to tie those to economic incentives. That’s the only language that might move Carney,” he said. Udall added that Carney lacks a deep understanding of the historical and political context, and will only act if there’s something of value at stake.

Domestic Politics Adds to the Complexity

Canada’s internal political scene also complicates things. Udall believes Carney will ignore protests from Sikh groups against Modi’s visit, as that aligns with his no-nonsense approach. However, unless Canadian voters or political consequences apply pressure, Carney is unlikely to prioritise India’s concerns.

A New Political Era Opens a Door

Udall pointed to the leadership transition from Trudeau and Jagmeet Singh to Carney as a key moment for change. He recalled that Trudeau’s India policy was shaped by political alliances with the NDP and Singh, who has faced criticism for alleged ties to pro-Khalistan groups.

Now, with both figures out of leadership, Udall sees an opportunity. “Carney’s gesture of inviting Modi is a sign: let’s forget the past and focus on mutual benefit. It’s a soft restart — an olive branch,” he said.

A Slow but Promising Road Ahead

Udall called the G7 meeting a “watershed moment.” He said the tone struck by Modi and Carney could determine the next phase of India-Canada relations. However, he cautioned that change will be gradual. “This won’t be a one-meeting fix. It’s going to be a long game for both leaders. Modi wants action on extremism; Carney wants trade. They’ll have to negotiate those interests delicately.”

Even if no immediate agreements on extradition or security are made, Udall believes simply opening up regular communication would be a success. “Diplomacy is momentum. If this meeting goes well, it builds trust. And from trust comes progress.”

A Moment to Rebuild After Years of Strain

As Modi interacts with global leaders at the G7, his meeting with Carney might define a new chapter in India-Canada ties, which have long hovered between cooperation and conflict.

Udall summed up the moment clearly: “This is a pivotal moment. Both sides need something — India wants a crackdown on extremism; Canada wants new trade partners. If they can meet halfway, it’ll be a major win for both democracies.”

Whether this summit becomes a passing headline or a major milestone will depend on what steps follow. But for the first time in years, both countries appear ready to talk.

</excerpt>

Canadian PM Mark Carney has explained inviting India’s PM Narendra Modi to the upcoming G7 Summit in Alberta. India is in the middle of most international supply chains and top international conversations, says Carney.

The invitation came after a discussion with other G7 nations, which mirror India’s role in energy security, digital linkages, and development partnerships. The action comes after political backlash after persistent India-Canada tensions over the 2023 murder of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India’s Critical Role at the G7 Summit

Mark Carney underscored the economic and demographic significance of India. India, as the fifth-largest world economy and largest nation, must lead the dialogue on shaping global challenges. They are energy security, digital futures, critical minerals, and infrastructure development in emerging markets.

According to a report by the incumbent chair of the G7, the invitation was made after other member states of the G7 reached a consensus. The move says a lot about the strategic value of having India at the table to facilitate cooperation.

Addressing Diplomatic Tensions

PM Mark Carney made these remarks at a time of increased political condemnation in Canada. Allegations linking India to the murder of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar have made the invitation contentious, but India denies any involvement.

He refrained from making any remarks on the alleged involvement of India, suggesting that a mature legal process had been initiated in Canada. He underlined being respectful of ongoing processes and investigations without making hasty comments.

Progress on Bilateral Cooperation

Despite diplomatic challenges, Carney noted continued law enforcement dialogue between India and Canada. Addressing security issues and enhancing accountability are the goals of this collaboration. He applauded PM Modi for accepting the invitation, showing readiness to discuss common interests despite the challenges. PM Modi verified his involvement in his announcement of his attendance at the G7 Summit, and PM Modi expressed optimism regarding India-Canada ties.

People-to-people ties and the robust democratic relationship between the nations were mentioned by PM Modi. He was excited to welcome PM Carney and other world leaders to the summit and promote more mutual respect and collaboration.

PM Modi’s invitation shows India’s growing global presence. It also highlights the need for dialogue amid diplomatic pressure. It also indicates Canada’s determination towards multilateralism and the inclusivity of engagement internationally.

The invitation signals a possible thaw in India-Canada relations, which had deteriorated over allegations involving the killing of a separatist.
</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement on Friday that he had spoken over the phone with his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, when he was formally invited to the G7 Summit later this month in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Attending the summit, Modi confirmed that he is anticipating meeting Carney at the summit.
Glad to get a call from Prime Minister Mark J Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election win and expressed gratitude for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month,” Modi tweeted on X.

He went on, “As dynamic democracies linked by deep people-to-people bonds, India and Canada will stride forward together with fresh energy, informed by mutual respect and common interests. Forward to our meeting at the Summit.”

The G7 Summit this year will be held from June 15 to June 17 in the picturesque town of Kananaskis, Alberta. Hosted by Canada under Prime Minister Carney, the summit will feature leaders from Canada, the US, the UK, France, Germany, Japan, and Italy. Regular invitations to attend the outreach meetings of the G7 have been extended to Prime Minister Modi by host countries like France, Germany, the UK, Japan, and Italy since 2019.

Strained Past, Rebuilding Hopes

The move comes amidst attempts at repairing strained India-Canada relations. Relations had deteriorated severely after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents in September 2023 of having a hand in the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a charge New Delhi strongly denied as ‘absurd’. In its wake, both countries expelled high-level diplomats and reduced bilateral interactions.

Now, with Carney’s administration in charge, things are looking like a reset. According to a Hindustan Times report, Canada is aiming to rebuild the relationship gradually. Foreign Minister Anita Anand, who had a recent phone call with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, was optimistic but cautious, stating the renewal of relations would be ‘one step at a time’.

With Modi’s confirmation of G7 participation and a bilateral meeting on the cards, the upcoming summit may provide a diplomatic opening for the two democracies to re-engage constructively.

G7 Eyes $325 Billion To Back Ukraine Against Moscow

<excerpt>The G7 is considering tougher sanctions on Russia and repurposing €300 billion in frozen assets to support Ukraine, as diplomatic pressure shifts to Moscow amid stalled ceasefire talks and ongoing territorial disputes.
</excerpt>

As former U.S. President Donald Trump pushes for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, the G7 nations have signaled their intent to impose further sanctions on Moscow and potentially use frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine’s defense.

G7 Weighs Stronger Economic Measures Against Russia

During a high-level meeting in Canada, G7 foreign ministers deliberated on tightening economic restrictions on Russia if it fails to comply with the proposed ceasefire agreement. While Ukraine has agreed to the 30-day truce, Russia has yet to confirm its participation.

One of the most significant measures under discussion includes leveraging the €300 billion ($325 billion) in frozen Russian central bank assets, initially seized in 2022. Western allies, including France and Germany, which had previously been hesitant to seize Russian-held assets within the European Union, are now reassessing their stance. Talks are also ongoing with the United Kingdom and other nations on how to repurpose these funds for Ukraine’s benefit.

Additional sanctions could include stricter controls on Russian oil exports, aimed at cutting off a key revenue stream for the Kremlin’s war efforts.

Diplomatic Focus Shifts to Moscow

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that while previous negotiations had focused on Kyiv making concessions, Russia must also demonstrate willingness to compromise.

“I’ve never heard President Trump say that Russia has a right to take all of Ukraine and do whatever they want there,” Rubio stated, reinforcing the idea that Moscow must engage in meaningful peace efforts.

The shift in diplomatic attention follows a tense meeting last month between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. After Washington temporarily halted military aid and intelligence sharing, Ukraine accepted Trump’s ceasefire proposal, leading to the resumption of U.S. support.

Territorial Disputes Pose a Major Challenge

While Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed a general willingness to engage in a ceasefire, unresolved territorial disputes remain a key obstacle. Russian forces continue their advances in the Kursk region, an area Ukraine partially reclaimed last year.

Zelenskyy acknowledged the complexity of negotiations, stating that the two most challenging aspects are agreeing to a ceasefire and resolving territorial disputes. “The first requires courage and political will; the second demands a difficult dialogue,” he remarked.

With pressure mounting on Russia to respond to the ceasefire deal, the G7’s potential sanctions and asset repurposing could become critical tools in shaping the outcome of the ongoing conflict.

</excerpt>

A new controversy has erupted at the G7 as the United States vetoed a Canadian proposal to form a task force aimed at monitoring Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” of aging oil tankers. These tankers, whose identities remain concealed to evade Western sanctions, have been causing significant disruptions in the Baltic Sea and beyond.

US Pushes to Weaken Anti-Russia Wording

During negotiations for a joint G7 communiqué, the US delegation lobbied to strengthen language about China while diluting references to Russia. According to Bloomberg, American officials successfully removed key terms such as “sanctions” and altered phrases describing Russia’s capacity to maintain its war in Ukraine, opting instead for language that emphasized “earning revenue.” The US justified its stance by citing a reevaluation of its participation in multilateral initiatives.

Canadian Proposal Under Fire

Canada, currently holding the G7 presidency, had advanced the proposal ahead of the foreign ministers’ meeting in Quebec. The measure aimed to counter potential sanctions breaches by Russia’s shadow fleet. However, the US veto has fueled questions about Washington’s seemingly lenient approach towards Russia, prompting debates over whether the decision is strategically motivated.

Meanwhile, European nations are exploring alternative strategies, including proposals to seize Moscow’s oil-exporting tankers in the Baltic Sea under environmental or piracy laws. It remains unclear if the United States will support these new measures or if it will continue to maintain its current course. As the G7 communiqué awaits final consensus, the evolving dispute highlights growing geopolitical tensions and the complex interplay of trade, sanctions, and global security.

</excerpt>

After his interaction with PM Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 summit, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has recently, announced, that he ‘sees’ an opportunity to collaborate with the newly elected Indian government, including economic relations and national security.

Talking about the interaction in CBC News Ottawa, Trudeau declared, that One of the notable aspects of the Summit is that ‘you get an opportunity to engage directly with a huge range of different leaders with whom there are various issues and certainly with India, there are massive people to people ties, they’re really important economic ties.’

He also added, there is alignment in various issues, that we need to address as democracies within the global community and it also gives them an opportunity to engage on various key issues.

‘There’s alignment on a number of big issues that we need to work on as, as democracies as a global community. But now that he (Modi) is through his election, I think there is an opportunity for us to engage, including on some very serious issues around national security and keeping Canadians safe and the rule of law that we will be engaging.’ emphasized Trudeau.

Controversy Of Hardeep Singh Nijjar Killing

These remarks come amidst the tense relationship prevailing between India and Canada. Which downgraded, due to allegations made by Trudeau over ‘potential’ involvement of Indian spies in killing of khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Reacting to these accusations, India call these claims as ‘absurd and motivated. Later, India accused Canada of providing space to khalistani elements in their country.

But recently on Friday, PM Modi, has recently shared an image of two heads of the country shaking hands with each other with a line ‘met Canadian PM Justin Trudeau at the G7 Summit.’

Later, when Trudeau was asked about Nijjar Killing, he simply said, ‘There is work ongoing very much’

Meanwhile, the G7 summit was conducted from June 13 to 15th in Italy’s Apulia region, which India attended as an ‘Outreach Country’.

During the summit, PM Narendra Modi interacted with several international leaders including Uk Prime minister Rishi Sunak and French President Emmanuel Macron. Then, he had an important meeting with US president Joe Biden and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.

Amidst a severe diplomatic strain between Canada and India over the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a courtesy interaction on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy. This meeting comes at a time when relations between the two countries are particularly tense.

Diplomatic Tensions

The tension stems from Canada’s allegations that agents of the Indian government were involved in the murder of Nijjar, who had been declared a terrorist by India. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India has strongly rejected these allegations as “absurd and motivated.” Furthermore, India has accused Canada of fostering anti-India elements, particularly those associated with the Khalistan movement.

The G7 Summit Interaction

The interaction between Trudeau and Modi was brief and described as a courtesy meeting, unlike Modi’s formal bilateral meetings with leaders from Italy, France, Japan, and others. Modi later posted a brief message stating, “Met Canadian PM Justin Trudeau at the G7 Summit.”

Trudeau’s Commitment to Cooperation

Following the brief exchange, Trudeau mentioned on Saturday that there was a commitment to work together with India to address some “very important issues.” He did not delve into the specifics of the conversation but emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two countries. “I’m not going to get into the details of this important, sensitive issue that we need to follow up on, but this was a commitment to work together, in the coming times, to deal with some very important issues,” Trudeau told reporters.

Canadian PMO’s Statement

The Canadian Prime Minister’s Office stated that the leaders had a “brief discussion on the bilateral relationship,” during which Trudeau congratulated Modi on his re-election. Ann-Clara Vaillancourt, a spokesperson for Trudeau, noted, “Of course, there are important issues between our two countries right now. You can appreciate that we won’t be making any further statements at this time.”

India’s Position

India has not released a separate statement regarding the interaction between Modi and Trudeau. However, New Delhi has consistently highlighted the main issue being Canada’s accommodation of pro-Khalistan elements. India expects Canada to take strong action against these elements to improve bilateral relations.

Broader Diplomatic Engagements

At the G7 Summit, PM Modi also held bilateral meetings with several other world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He also met with US President Joe Biden.

The courtesy meeting between Trudeau and Modi, although brief, signifies a step towards addressing the complex issues straining India-Canada relations, with both leaders acknowledging the need for further dialogue and cooperation.

Economic diplomacy dominates as $10-trillion-economy by 2030 is the goal .

It was the day of Europe and a delicate diplomatic waltz for India’s Prime Miniter Narendra Modi at the G7 summit in Italy as he met the leaders of Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Japan on the margins of this annual diplomatic outing of the world’s wealthiest countries focused on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

On Day 1 of his visit to Italy, PM Modi held wide-ranging talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to advance and elevate ties with these Western democracies. In a diplomatic balancing act, PM Modi also met Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky and discussed there.

Economic diplomacy dominated PM Modi’s interactions with the leaders of European countries as he sought more investment from them, with the larger goal of making India a 10-trillion-dollar economy by 2030.

Focus France

The talks between Mr Modi and Macron focused on scaling up India-France ties in key areas of defence, nuclear, space, education, climate action, digital public infrastructure, and connectivity. The primary focus of the Modi-Macron talks was on implementing the ‘Horizon 2047’ Roadmap and the Indo-Pacific Roadmap to take strategic partnership to the next level.

Predictably, the talks centred on the next steps in India-France defence partnership under the template of ‘Make in India’ model of co-production and co-development.

The two leaders agreed to expand cooperation in the realms of AI, critical and emerging technologies, energy and sports. They decided to work closely in context of the forthcoming AI Summit and United Nations Oceans Conference, both to be hosted in France in 2025, said a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

In the outreach session, President Macron lauded PM Modi’s initiative on Artificial Intelligence and Digital Public Infrastructure.

Bonding with Britain

In his bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the primary focus was on intensifying negotiations for concluding the Free Trade Agreement, which will pave the way for accelerating India-UK economic relations. The talks also covered enhancing bilateral collaboration in semiconductors, technology, trade, security, and defence.

This was possibly the last meeting of PM Modi with Sunak, who is expected to be voted out of power in the elections scheduled for July 4. Like in the US, there is a robust bipartisan consensus in the UK for stronger relations with India, which is widely seen as an emerging power and the world’s fastest growing major economy.

Balancing Act: Ukraine Meeting

The meeting with Ukraine President Zelensky was significant as all eyes are on India’s representation at the Ukraine Peace Summit in Lucerne, Switzerland on June 15-16. In his talks. PM Modi conveyed that India continues to encourage peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. Modi’s message to Ukraine and the international community was clear: India would continue to do everything within its means to support a peaceful solution, but don’t expect India to criticise Russia or downgrade its ties with special and privileged strategic partner.

PM Modi’s stand on the Ukraine issue stood out at the G7 summit in Apulia which saw G7 countries clearing a controversial deal to provide $50 billion of loans for Ukraine using interest from Russian sovereign assets frozen after Moscow invaded its neighbour in 2022. Terming the frozen asset agreement a “significant outcome”, Biden told reporters that it was “another reminder to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin that we’re not backing down.”

With the interests of the Global South on the mind, PM Modi’s remarks at the outreach summit of the G7 will focused on artificial intelligence, energy transition, Africa, and the Mediterranean, which impinge on interests of the developing countries. In his remarks at the outreach session on AI, PM Modi made an eloquent case for promoting ethical use of AI and the use of AI for solving problems in developing countries of the Global South.

(Manish Chand Editor-in-Chief, India Writes Network, and CEO, Centre for Global India Insights, a think tank focused on global affairs. He is currently in Fasano, Italy to report on and analyse the G7 summit and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Italy).

The bilateral meeting occurred on Friday on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy.

France remains India’s closest strategic partner in Europe, with robust cooperation in security and defence. India is currently negotiating with France to acquire 26 Rafale jets for the Indian Navy, following a previous purchase of 36 jets for the Indian Air Force under a 2016 deal worth €7.87 billion.

India is participating in the G7 Summit as an outreach country, held at the luxurious Borgo Egnazia resort in Italy’s Apulia region from June 13-15. PM Modi arrived at Brindisi Airport in Apulia late Thursday night (local time) and was welcomed by India’s Ambassador to Italy, Vani Rao, and other officials.

Upon his arrival, PM Modi expressed his anticipation for productive discussions with global leaders. In addition to meeting Macron, he also met UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This marks Modi’s first international trip after assuming office for the third consecutive term and his fourth meeting with President Macron within a year. Their discussions focused on promoting innovation and research among youth.

“Had an excellent meeting with my friend President @EmmanuelMacron. This is our fourth meeting in one year, indicating the priority we accord to strong India-French ties. Our talks covered numerous subjects such as defence, security, technology, AI, Blue Economy and more. We also discussed how to encourage innovation and research among the youth. I conveyed my best wishes to him on the hosting of the Paris Olympics, which begins next month,” PM Modi shared in a post on X.

He also thanked President Macron for his warm wishes on his third consecutive term. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement detailing the leaders’ review of India-France bilateral relations, focusing on the ‘Horizon 2047’ Roadmap and the Indo-Pacific Roadmap. The discussions included cooperation in defence, nuclear, space, education, climate action, digital public infrastructure, connectivity, and cultural initiatives such as the National Museum partnership and enhancing people-to-people ties.

They agreed to further intensify strategic defence cooperation, with a heightened focus on ‘Make in India.’ The leaders also committed to expanding cooperation in AI, emerging technologies, energy, and sports, and to work closely on the forthcoming AI Summit and United Nations Oceans Conference, both scheduled in France in 2025.

Exchanging views on key global and regional issues, they highlighted the importance of a strong and trusted strategic partnership for a stable and prosperous global order and agreed to elevate their collaboration.

PM Modi extended his best wishes to President Macron for the upcoming Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. This G7 Summit marks India’s 11th participation and Modi’s fifth consecutive attendance. Modi is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, underscoring the continuous enhancement of bilateral ties between India and Italy.

The G7 summit is being held at the luxurious Borgo Egnazia resort in Italy’s Apulia region from June 13-15. PM Modi is attending the summit at the invitation of Italian PM Giorgia Meloni.

Earlier, in his departure statement, Prime Minister Modi expressed his pleasure that his first state visit in his third consecutive term is to Italy for the G7 Summit. He also recalled his previous visit to Italy and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visits to India, noting that these exchanges have significantly contributed to enhancing bilateral ties.

“I am glad that my first visit in the third consecutive term is to Italy for the G-7 Summit. I warmly recall my visit to Italy for the G20 Summit in 2021. Prime Minister Meloni’s two visits to India last year were instrumental in infusing momentum and depth in our bilateral agenda. We remain committed to consolidate the India-Italy strategic partnership, and bolster cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean regions,” PM Modi had said.

This will be India’s 11th participation and PM Modi’s fifth consecutive attendance at the G7 Summit. PM Modi is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with his Italian counterpart.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will journey to Italy on Thursday to attend the G7 Summit on June 13 and 14, marking his first international trip since securing a record-equalling third term.

As an Outreach Country, India joins the Summit alongside the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, France, and the European Union. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni extended the invitation, marking India’s 11th Summit presence and Modi’s fifth consecutive attendance.

On the sidelines, Modi is slated for bilateral discussions with G7 leaders, including US President Joe Biden. On Wednesday, National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan said that Biden and PM Modi would likely “have the opportunity to encounter one another” on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy.

“He (Biden) expects to see Prime Minister Modi here. It’s up to the Indians to formally confirm his attendance, but our expectation is that the two of them will have the opportunity to encounter one another. The nature of that encounter is still fluid because so much of the schedule is fluid,” Sullivan told reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to Italy to attend the G7 Summit, along with the US president.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra announced in New Delhi that PM Modi will embark on his first overseas trip to Italy on Thursday after securing a third consecutive term. Before his visit, a Gandhi statue in Italy was defaced by pro-Khalistani groups with a slogan referencing Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Indian authorities have addressed the issue with their Italian counterparts.

“We have the question relating to the vandalization of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. We have seen the reports of that and we have taken it up with the Italian authorities. We understand that suitable rectification has already taken place,” the Foreign Secretary said during the press conference.

On Tuesday, Kwatra confirmed that Modi will meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, but details of other bilateral meetings are still being finalized. Meanwhile, aboard Air Force One, Sullivan mentioned that Biden called Modi from Paris to congratulate him on his election victory and his third term as Prime Minister.
