G20 Summit Reaches Fragile Consensus On Climate Finance Amid Growing Tensions

November 18, 2024, 12:20 pm

Diplomatic Struggles over Global Warming Efforts at G20 Talks in Rio

Diplomatic tensions over climate change spilled into the G20 summit negotiations in Rio de Janeiro this week, with major economies managing to reach a fragile agreement on climate finance something that had proven elusive during the UN talks in Azerbaijan. As world leaders gathered on Sunday, they prepared to tackle a wide range of issues, from global poverty to institutional reform. However, the focus remained on how to address the ongoing climate crisis.

G20’s Role in Climate Finance and Emissions

While the COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, has been charged with securing a goal for climate finance, the G20 economies hold the financial power needed to mobilize billions of dollars for climate efforts. G20 countries, which represent 85% of the global economy, are also the largest contributors to multilateral development banks, which fund climate finance initiatives.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the G20’s responsibility, noting that these nations contribute to 80% of global emissions. He urged G20 leaders to show leadership by example in combating climate change and improving the state of COP29 negotiations. Similarly, UN climate chief Simon Stiell sent a letter to G20 leaders, urging them to bolster financial support for developing countries and reform the multilateral development banks.

Divisions Over Who Contributes to Climate Finance

The ongoing negotiations at the G20 summit mirrored the contentious debates that have dominated COP29. One key issue is how much financing should be directed toward developing nations. Experts have recommended a target of at least $1 trillion. Wealthy countries, particularly in Europe, argue that this goal can only be achieved if richer developing nations such as China and Middle Eastern oil producers also contribute.

However, countries like Brazil resisted calls for mandatory contributions, advocating instead for voluntary donations from developing nations. After intense discussions, negotiators reached a compromise, agreeing on language that mentions voluntary contributions without making them mandatory.

US Election and the Future of Climate Action

Despite the progress in Rio, the G20’s achievements are overshadowed by the political uncertainty surrounding the United States’ commitment to climate action. President-elect Donald Trump is expected to withdraw the US from the Paris climate agreement once again, which could significantly undermine global efforts to raise climate finance.

Trump’s decision to roll back climate policies introduced by outgoing President Joe Biden has raised concerns about the future of climate funding. Biden, who visited the Amazon rainforest on his way to the summit, had highlighted his administration’s commitment to tackling climate change, but his successor’s stance could derail these efforts.

Looking Ahead: COP30 and Brazil’s Strategy

The outcome of COP29 and the upcoming COP30 summit, set to be held in Brazil next year, is crucial to achieving global climate goals. Brazil’s strategy for COP30 focuses on “Mission 1.5,” a push to limit global warming to 1.5°C in line with the Paris Agreement. However, the UN estimates that current national targets would lead to a rise of at least 2.6°C.

Developing countries argue that they can only enhance their emissions reduction targets if wealthy nations take responsibility for financing the necessary efforts. Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis stated that limiting warming to 1.5°C is technically possible, but only with a significant, G20-led effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

Global Leadership and India’s Commitment

PM Modi underlined India’s emergence as a beacon of hope, growth, and democracy on the global stage. He highlighted India’s role as a “Vishwa Bandhu” (global friend) during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing vaccines to countries in need.

Honored with Nigeria’s National Award

North Korea May Deploy 1 Lakh Troops To Aid Russia In Ukraine War

November 17, 2024, 10:44 pm

North Korea may send up to 1 lakh troops to aid Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. According to G20 assessments, the deployment could happen in phases, with rotating units arriving in Russia’s Kursk region and occupied eastern Ukraine.

Concerns Raised by Ukraine and Allies

Ukraine’s ambassador to South Korea, Dmytro Ponomarenko, has already flagged this potential deployment. He suggested an initial wave of 15,000 North Korean soldiers could arrive soon, rotating every few months. This development has alarmed Ukraine’s allies, who view North Korea’s involvement as a dangerous escalation.

Impact on Global Security

Western nations are particularly worried about the broader implications for regional stability. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz voiced his concerns directly to Vladimir Putin, warning that North Korean involvement could destabilize the Indo-Pacific, where tensions are already high due to US-China rivalries.

G20 Summit to Address Escalation

The upcoming G20 Summit in Brazil will likely focus on this issue. Scholz plans to engage with Chinese President Xi Jinping, urging Beijing to use its influence to prevent North Korea from escalating the conflict. China, a close ally of both Russia and North Korea, has remained silent so far.

Reports of Troops Already in Russia

Reports suggest North Korea has already sent over 10,000 troops to Russia, along with weapons and artillery. South Korea fears Pyongyang may seek advanced military technology from Moscow in return, including tactical nuclear weapons and missile systems.

Biden To Become First Sitting US President To Visit The Amazon Jungle

November 17, 2024, 2:30 pm

On Sunday, US President Joe Biden will make history as the first sitting American president to visit the Amazon, the immense and treacherous tropical rainforest. This visit is part of Biden’s final tour of South America before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Biden, 81, will stop in Manaus, the largest city in the Amazon, before continuing to Rio de Janeiro for the upcoming two-day G20 summit.

The Amazon holds historical significance for the United States, notably for former President Theodore Roosevelt, who nearly lost his life there. In 1914, four years after leaving office, Roosevelt embarked on a daring expedition through the jungle’s Rio da Duvida (River of Doubt), a perilous 760-kilometer waterway. Accompanied by Brazilian explorer Candido Rondon, Roosevelt’s journey became a struggle for survival. Several members of his team died, and Roosevelt himself contracted malaria and suffered a leg infection, which left him incapacitated.

Despite the hardships, Roosevelt remained determined, telling friends that he was prepared to risk his life for the adventure. In the end, the expedition was saved when they encountered Brazilian rubber tappers who assisted them, allowing the survivors to reach safety.

Though Roosevelt did not fully recover from the physical toll of the expedition, his and Rondon’s efforts in mapping the River of Doubt earned them acclaim. The river was later renamed the Roosevelt River in his honor. Roosevelt passed away in 1919 at the age of 60, his health never fully restored.

Biden’s upcoming visit to the Amazon reflects his commitment to deepening US-Brazil relations, as well as his ongoing efforts to highlight climate and environmental concerns during his time in office.

The two leaders had previously met in July when PM Modi traveled to France to take part in the Bastille Day Parade. As the Guest of Honor for Bastille Day, PM Modi took part in the festivities. At the invitation of French President Macron, he had traveled to France. On Friday, PM Modi traveled to France to commemorate the 25th anniversary of India and France’s strategic partnership.

“To mark the 25th anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership, a 241-member tri-service Indian armed forces contingent led by a military band also participated in the Parade,” the PMO said in a statement.
The Indian Army contingent was led by the Punjab Regiment, followed by a complement from the Rajputana Rifles Regiment.

India to be world’s third-largest economy by 2027 according to Amit Shah

September 29, 2023, 3:35 pm

Indian Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed optimism on Friday that his country will have the third-largest economy in the world by 2027. The Home Minister urged the industry to increase investments in research and development to elevate MSMEs to a global level while speaking at the PHDCCI’s 118th Annual Session at Vigyan Bhawan in this city. At the beginning of his speech, he mentioned the accomplishments of the G20 Summit, Chandrayaan-3, and Mission Aditya L-1. He also made mention of the passage of the women’s reservation bill.

“All these events have filled the country with new energy,” the Home Minister said.
He said the country has completed 75 years journey after Independence and has several achievements to its credit.
Shah said the roots of democracy have deepened in the country.

He said India was at 11th position in 2014 in terms of the size of its economy.
“Now, we are the fifth-largest economy of the world and I have firm belief that we are going to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027,” Shah said.

Shah urged the industries to grow in size and scope, recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s famous quote, “Yahi Samay Hai, Sahi Samay Hai.” He also requested that PHDCCI play a significant role in the process. More emphasis on R&D, according to the home minister, will make it possible for industries to compete globally. Shah also expressed optimism about India’s future as a global hub for higher education.

PM Modi :India-Middle East-Europe corridor will become foundation of the world trade for centuries

September 24, 2023, 2:07 pm

According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, history will remember that the India-Middle East-European corridor was conceived in India and that it will serve as a foundation for global trade for the ensuing decades.

Modi mentioned the “Silk route,” an old trade route utilized by India when it was a thriving and significant commercial power, in his monthly Mann ki Baat address. He also claimed that India recently proposed the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor at the G20 Summit. He said that the two achievements have appeared most frequently in the communications he has gotten from people. He claimed that the summit’s success, followed by India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission’s success, quadrupled every citizen’s satisfaction.

He claimed that when India was successful in getting the African Union admitted to the G20, the world recognized its leadership. The prime minister claimed that Bharat Mandapam, the site of the G20 Summit, had become a “celebrity” and that visitors had been taking photos in front of the cutting-edge conference hall.

Noting that September 27 is World Tourism Day, he stated that goodwill plays a significant role in luring travelers and that tourism is supposed to provide the most jobs with the least amount of investment. The goodwill toward India has increased over the past few years, he claimed, and it has only increased since the G20 summits, when more than a million international delegates visited various regions of the nation to see its richness and history.

The recent designation of the Hoysala temples of Karnataka and Santiniketan, the city associated with Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, according to Modi, is a source of great pleasure.

There are now 42 of these sites in India, and the nation is working to have more locations connected to its culture and legacy recognized as World legacy Sites. No one will ever forget seeing world leaders paying respects at Mahatma Gandhi’s tomb during the G20 Summit, he added, noting that it demonstrated how his principles are still relevant on a worldwide scale as his birth anniversary is on October 2.

G20 Summit: Justin Trudeau refused ‘presidential suite’ at hotel

September 21, 2023, 1:22 pm

According to sources, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau chose to stay in a regular room rather than the presidential suite during his trip to India for the G20 Summit. Notably, according to security protocols, presidential suites are specially created by Indian security agencies. During his stay for the G20 Summit, Trudeau stayed at the Lalit Hotel in the nation’s capital.

However, despite being offered a presidential suite, his delegation refused to stay there and instead stayed at a regular room in the same hotel, sources said.

Every global leader who had come to India for the G20 was provided VVIP hotels with the presidential suite, with complete security protocols.

According to sources, Trudeau’s delegation told Indian security agencies that this decision is being taken due to cost considerations. However, the Indian agencies have said that there is no information about the exact reason behind Trudeau’s staying in a normal room.

Locals in Pakistan full of praise for G20 summit :“They were successful in showcasing India before world”

September 14, 2023, 10:42 am

Pakistanis were very complimentary of India for hosting the 18th G20 Leaders’ Summit so successfully. The high-profile event, held on September 9 and 10, at Delhi’s Pragati Maidan’s state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam, attracted heads of state from over 30 nations and representatives of major international organizations. The New Delhi Declaration was unanimously adopted by the G20 member states during the two-day mega-huddle. The members of the declaration even made mention of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and urged all nations to abstain from using force to seize new territory, without directly criticizing Russia.

Among other key takeaways from the summit were announcement of an India-Middle East-Europe trade corridor and the formal induction of the African Union (AU) as a full member of the G20.

India took over the G20 presidency on December 1 last year at the summit in Bali and will continue to hold the mantle till the end of November. However, on the concluding day of the summit, PM Modi handed over the gavel of G20 Presidency to Brazilian President Lula da Silva.

Absolutely believe it was a success, US praises India for G20 Summit

September 12, 2023, 7:19 pm

The G20 Leaders’ Summit closed with much fervor in Delhi on Sunday, under India’s leadership, and the US hailed it a ‘total success.’

“We absolutely believe it was a success,” US State Department official spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters at a regular news conference on Monday.

The G20 is a massive organization. Russia is a member of the Group of 20. China is a member of the Group of 20. The spokeswoman reacted to a media question about the success of the G20 Summit.

When asked about Russia’s absence from the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, he said, “There are members that have a diverse range of views. We believe the fact that the organization was able to issue a statement that calls for respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty and saying that those principles should not be violated is an extremely important statement because that is exactly what is at the heart of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

“It is those very questions so we thought that was an incredibly important statement for them to make,” Miller added.

The “use or threat of use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible,” G20 nations warned in a New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration on Saturday, referring to the Ukraine conflict.

Without mentioning Russia, the G20 member countries recalled the Bali declaration and emphasized that all states must act in accordance with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter in their entirety, calling for a “comprehensive, just, and durable peace in Ukraine” and reminding member states to “refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition.”

“Concerning the war in Ukraine, while recalling the discussion in Bali, we reiterated our national positions and resolutions adopted at the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly and underscored that all States must act in a manner consistent with the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter in its entirety.

“In line with the UN Charter, all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state. The use or threat of use of nuclear weapons are inadmissible,” the joint declaration read.

The majority of the international media have praised India and spoken of its growing influence as the voice of the Global South as the G20 Summit successfully concluded with unanimous support for the New Delhi Declaration. The Washington Post praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for addressing international issues and achieving complete agreement on all geopolitical and developmental matters. “India forges compromise among divided world powers at the G20 summit in a diplomatic win for Modi,” was the headline of the post.

Dubai based media organisation, Gulf News emphasized on the aspect of how the 18th G20 Summit shaped the world in harmony and diversity and shared their story with the headline, “18th G20 Summit: Shaping a world of diversity and harmony.”
Australian news outlet ABC news however saw the Delhi declaration as being watered down in its language on the conflict in Ukraine. ABC news wrote “Anthony Albanese hails watered down agreement as G20 summit wraps.”
Albanese on Saturday termed the G20 Summit hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “successful” and also stated that the New Delhi Summit was followed by a good bilateral discussion between the two leaders.

Successful G20 Summit brings cheers to Indian stock investors

September 11, 2023, 11:35 am

Taking cues from the generally successful G20 Summit in New Delhi, Indian stock indices opened Monday’s trading on a strong note. Despite a divided house due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Western sanctions against Russia, the agreement on the ambitious rail-port economic corridor connecting India with the Middle East and Europe as well as the launch of the Global Biofuel Alliance on the fringes of the summit seemed to entice investors to place bets in the market.

Sensex and Nifty were 0.3-0.4 per cent higher from their Friday close of 66,861.16 points and 19,910.10 points, with all sectoral indices in the green. Last week, Indian stocks ended at a high to log their best week in over two months.
Companies involved in railways, ports and infrastructure are the top gainers today.

Additionally, up until August, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were still net buyers in the Indian stock markets, marking the sixth consecutive month of positive market activity. According to data, they acquired equity assets worth a total of Rs. 1.31 lakh crore in 2023.

“The G20 Delhi Declaration and India’s diplomatic triumph can trigger a continuation of the positive market mood and momentum,” said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.
“More importantly, the inclusion of the African Union in G20 and the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Corridor have positive economic and market connotations,” Vijayakumar added.
Citing an example, he said the inclusion of the African Union in G20 is positive news for Bharti Airtel which has a significant presence in Africa.

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov :”G20 Summit has been a milestone…healthy solution found in declaration”

September 10, 2023, 4:34 pm

The G20 summit in New Delhi, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, was “a milestone” and the active role of the Indian presidency “has genuinely consolidated” the Global South nations for the first time in history. After the G20 Summit ended here, Lavrov told a press conference that the declaration regarding the need to work toward a clear and equitable balance of interests represented a constructive resolution.

“It is a long way to go but this Summit has been a milestone… I would also like to mention the active role of the Indian presidency that has genuinely consolidated the G20 countries from the Global South for the first time in history. Our BRICS partners – Brazil, India, China, South Africa have been particularly active and thanks to these consolidated positions taken by the Global South countries to uphold and protect their legitimate interests,” he said.
“I think that a healthy solution has been found in the declaration regarding the need to strive for a clear and equitable balance of interest. It is one of the decent purposes and we are already on track. In our turn, we will continue strengthening these positive trends including during Brazil’s presidency next year and in 2025 during South Africa’s presidency,” he added.

Toward the end of India’s G20 presidency, Lavrov also made mention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s suggestion to hold a virtual G20 meeting in November to discuss the resolutions made at the New Delhi Summit.

Joe Biden, the president of the United States, left for Vietnam on Sunday after attending the G20 Summit in India. He is scheduled to meet with Nguyen Phu Trng, the general secretary of Vietnam, and other important figures during his visit to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

While in Hanoi, President Biden will meet with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and other key leaders to discuss ways to further deepen cooperation between the United States and Vietnam.”

Here are the main lessons learned from Biden’s three-day visit to India, which included a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as he prepares to leave for Vietnam. Biden attended the G20 Summit while in Delhi, which was hosted by India.

Biden said that the G20 Summit held in India proved that the group can still drive solutions to “most pressing issues.” He noted that the global economy is suffering from overlapping shocks of the climate crisis.
Sharing a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, US President Joe Biden stated, “At a moment when the global economy is suffering from the overlapping shocks of the climate crisis, fragility, and conflict, this year’s Summit proved that the G20 can still drive solutions to our most pressing issues.”
At the G20 Summit, India, the US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Italy and the European Union signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. Biden called it a “game-changing” regional investment.

According to Biden, this project entails more than just building tracks. The US President wrote on X, “I’m proud to announce that the US, India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Italy and EU finalized a historic agreement for a new India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.” It’s not just about laying tracks in this project, you know. This regional investment will change the playing field, he added.

The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “promises to be a beacon of cooperation, innovation, and shared progress.” The corridor, according to him, is evidence of human endeavour and unity across continents.

In addition to US President Joe Biden, Saudi Arabian Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, and leaders of the EU, PM Modi announced the ambitious project on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.

According to a statement released by the White House, US President Biden and Prime Minister Modi welcomed the conclusion of the notification procedure regarding negotiations for a commercial agreement between GE Aerospace and Hindustan Aeronautical Limited. The India-U.S. Initiative for Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) is one of the futuristic and extensive outcomes of PM Modi’s historic state visit to the US in June 2023. The two leaders applauded the progress being made in implementing this initiative. The leaders also welcomed the ongoing momentum in bilateral cooperation in the fields of defense, trade, investment, education, health, research, innovation, culture, and people-to-people ties, according to the joint statement from India and the US.

G20 Summit : Delhi Traffic Police issues alert

September 10, 2023, 9:51 am

Security was increased in some areas of the national capital on Sunday in preparation for the crucial Day 2 of the G20 Summit.

According to the Delhi Traffic Police alert, “Police Controlled Zone 2 has been implemented and consequently, buses will not operate on Ring Road between ISBT Kashmiri Gate and Sarai Kale Khan. Buses will operate on the remaining stretch of Ring Road and the road network beyond Ring Road towards the borders of Delhi.”

The alert also advised commuters traveling to the airport to take Rao Tula Ram Marg rather than Dhaula Kuan due to traffic restrictions associated with the G20 Summit. Additionally, it stated that the other traffic laws that have been in effect since August 23 will continue to be in effect. Top-notch security provided the backdrop for the first day of the G20 meeting in Delhi, where world leaders gathered under one roof to attend the G20 meeting at Bharat Mandapam on Saturday. This included empty roads and congested mobile networks. The city was declared a no-fly zone, and mobile signals at the event site were jammed to prevent any breaches. The security establishment took no chances to ensure complete security throughout the gathering.

Since 9 p.m. on September 7, the traffic management plan created for the high-profile summit in the Delhi-NCR region has been in effect and will remain so until the conclusion of the massive event. Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), paid a prayer visit to the Akshardham Temple in New Delhi on Sunday morning. Extensive security measures in and around the temple were put in place prior to the visit of the UK Prime Minister.

Today, the most important delegates will go to Rajghat to honor Mahatma Gandhi and plant a tree. There will also be a live performance of devotional songs by Mahatma Gandhi.

India has done the right thing, says Manmohan Singh as he backs nation’s Russia-Ukraine stance

September 8, 2023, 2:44 pm

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in an interview with The Indian Express that India has “done the right thing in putting its sovereign and economic interests first while also appealing for peace,” ahead of the major G20 meeting, which begins today in Delhi.

At the same time, he has warned against using foreign policy to influence domestic politics.

According to sources, Manmohan Singh, who served as Prime Minister of the Congress-led UPA for two years between 2004 and 2014, is among the politicians invited to a G20 dinner on Saturday.

Dr Singh told the reporters that international policy has become considerably more relevant to domestic politics than it was during his tenure as India’s G20 presidency. He stressed the importance of exercising restraint while employing diplomacy for party politics.

“I am very glad that India’s rotational chance for the Presidency of the G20 came during my lifetime and I am witness to India hosting world leaders for the G20 summit.

“Foreign policy has always been an important element of India’s governance framework, but it is fair to say that it has become even more relevant and important to domestic politics today than earlier.

“While India’s standing in the world should rightfully be an issue in domestic politics, it is equally important to exercise restraint in using diplomacy and foreign policy for party or personal politics,” said the 90-year-old former PM.

Dr. Singh commented on the government’s handling of a difficult diplomatic position on the Ukraine-Russia conflict, stating it had done “the right thing.”

“When two or more powers are caught in a conflict, there is immense pressure on other nations to choose sides. I believe India has done the right thing in putting our sovereign and economic interests first while also appealing for peace.

“The G20 was never envisaged as the forum for settling security-related conflicts. It is important for the G20 to set aside security differences and keep its focus on policy coordination to tackle the challenges of climate, inequality and confidence in global trade,” he further added.
