The Foreign Minister underlined the shared commitment of India and Italy to ensuring maritime freedom, recalling Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni’s description of the Mediterranean as a vital link between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
“Our maritime interests and shared commitment bring our countries closer,” Jaishankar noted.

EAM S Jaishankar: “India’s G20 Presidency advocated for finding solutions from within Global South”

India’s G20 Presidency, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, pushed for solutions to be found within the Global South on Friday. By organizing the inaugural Voice of the Global South Summit in January 2023, he claimed that India had set an example for other countries to follow. The summit allowed the countries to discuss the main issues and priorities facing the Global South. “As we took over the G20 presidency last year, Prime Minister Modi declared that and I quote, “Our G20 priorities will be shaped in consultation with not just our G20 partners, but also our fellow travellers from the Global South, whose voice often goes unheard,” Jaishankar said at the Foreign Ministers Session of the Second Voice of the Global South.

India has since walked the talk by hosting the first voice of the Global South Summit in January this year. By doing so, we were able to elicit and deliberate on the key concerns and priorities of the Global South. This, in turn, informed our approach to the G20 discussions throughout the year.”
The External Affairs Minister noted that long-standing structural inequities have been seriously aggravated by the devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Jaishankar stressed that it has turned worse due to the fuel, food and fertilizer crisis emanating from the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and its response. He stated that India is hosting the Second Voice of Global South to report on key outcomes from the New Delhi G20 Summit.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat highlights India’s G20 presidency at ‘Vijayadashmi Utsav’ ceremony

Leading Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Mohan Bhagwat, highlighted India’s successful hosting of the G20 summit on Tuesday during a function held at ‘Vijayadashmi Utsav’ in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

The RSS chief pointed out that India’s leadership gave the country a place in the world.
“Every year, India’s pride is increasing in the world. The G 20 summit held here (in India) was special. The hospitality of Indians was praised. People from different countries experienced our diversity. They saw our diplomatic skills as well as our honest goodwill. Our leadership gave India a place in the world,” Mohan Bhagwat said while speaking at the event.
India took over the G20 presidency on December 1 last year at the summit in Bali and will continue to hold the mantle till the end of November.

The head of the RSS also voiced criticism towards those he claimed were impeding India’s progress.

“…There are some people in the world and in also India who do not want that India should move forward… They try to create factions and clashes in society. Because of our unawareness and lack of belief, we also sometimes get entangled in it, and unnecessary nuisances are created…If India progresses, they will not be able to play their games; therefore, they continuously oppose. They adopt particular ideologies just for the sake of opposing” the RSS Chief said.

EAM Jaishankar meets UN leadership to discuss India’s G20 Presidency and UNSC reforms

S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, met with the top UN officials in this location to discuss the Security Council reforms, the G20 presidency of India, local and global challenges, and sustainable development goals. Jaishankar met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and General Assembly President Dennis Francis on Monday at the UN’s headquarters, a day before he participates in the General Debate at the current high-level General Assembly session. Achim Steiner, the administrator of the United Nations Development Program, was another person he met with.

Jaishankar said it was a “pleasure” to meet with Guterres and that he discussed “how India’s G20 Presidency has contributed to strengthening” the UN’s sustainable development agenda.

“We have coordinated closely in this regard over the last year,” Jaishankar said in a tweet, adding that he appreciated Guterres’ strong commitment to reforming international financial institutions.

In a readout of the meeting issued by the UN spokesperson’s office, Guterres “expressed appreciation for India’s cooperation with the UN and its leadership of the G20”.

According to the readout, Guterres and Jaishankar also “discussed the situations in Afghanistan, Myanmar, and other global challenges.” On September 9 and 10, under India’s G20 Presidency, the UN secretary-general attended the G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi. Jaishankar met Francis before his meeting with Guterres and appreciated his appreciation of the results of India’s G20 Presidency.

Bhutan Foreign Minister Tandi Dorji lauds India’s G20 Presidency

Tandi Dorji, the foreign minister of Bhutan, praised India’s G20 presidency on Saturday (local time), calling it “stunning and exemplary.” He described India as Bhutan’s “very strong partner”. Tandi Dorji said, “India has always been a very strong partner for Bhutan and will continue to wish India the best. And we hope that India will continue to be the voice of the Global South.”
“Absolutely stunning, as I mentioned, India’s presidency of the G20 was very, very exemplary. In that, it represented all of the global south. And for the entire year, India has always included the participation of all the countries from the Global South. And we are very, very proud to be a partner of India,” he added.

Samoa Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataʻafa said, “The colleagues who spoke on the presidency of India’s G20 encapsulated, I think, the general feeling of the South in terms of India’s leadership and stewardship of the development process and in partnerships with the South. And I think there’s been a significant leadership role. And you can see by the representation at the meeting today people’s appreciation of that leadership, which is very much needed in the current geopolitical framework and architecture.”

Kej said that India has been looked upon as a leader of the Global South and he feels “proud about it.” “I’m really happy to be here in New York at this lovely event on the fringes of General Assembly Week,” said Ricky Kej. And it’s so amazing to see where India is now.In the past, we always felt that India was always on the sidelines when it came to intergovernmental decisions, but right now, India is not only participating, but India is also taking strong leadership. This is especially true when you consider that India has been viewed as a leader of the Global South and that all these amazing excellencies are speaking about India’s role in South South cooperation right now.

World Bank President Ajay Banga :”India’s G20 presidency set path for world”

Ajay Banga, the president of the World Bank, claimed on Sunday that India’s G20 presidency had paved the way for the rest of the world and praised the G20 declaration’s anonymous adoption by all G20 countries.

“I consider the fact that there was a declaration, a tribute to the fact that the G20 leadership found a way to give and take and negotiate and find a right way to agree and set a path for the world. The world is watching, the G20 has got the developed world and the developing countries,” Banga said. Banga emphasised that challenges will always exist but India had shown the way by working out a consensus.
He added, “80% of the world’s GDP was sitting in the room. If they would not agree that would not give a good message. I actually compliment India, its leadership and the G 20 leaders for being able to make sure that a terrific declaration comes out. There will always be challenges.”
“No 20 countries will agree on everything. People will have to look after their national interests. But I am optimistic by the mood I saw in that room” he added.

The G20 Delhi Declaration was approved earlier on Saturday. It urged nations to uphold international law, including the multilateral system that protects peace and stability as well as territorial integrity and international humanitarian law. The declaration envisions a green development pact for a sustainable future and supports, among other things, the Deccan Principles on Food Security and Nutrition, the Chennai Principles for a Sustainable Resilient Blue Economy, and high level principles on lifestyle for sustainable development.

The biggest takeaway from the declaration was that all 83 of its paragraphs were approved by a vote of 100% consensus, with China and Russia joining in. The declaration was the first to do so without a footnote or Chair’s Summary. Additionally, the African Union was admitted as a new permanent member of the G20 at the G20 meeting on Saturday, giving developing countries a bigger voice in international decision-making.

OECD Sherpa : India’s G20 Presidency at crucial moment of global economy

Andreas Schaal, the OECD Sherpa to the G20, praised India as a “fantastic host” for the entire world. According to him, India assumed the G20 presidency at a pivotal time for the world economy, when resilient, sustainable growth is needed.

On September 9–10, India will host the G20 Leaders Summit in its capital city at the recently opened Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre at Pragati Maidan. The G20 Summit is being held for the first time while India is in the presidency.

Andreas Schaal said, “First of all, I should say that India is a fantastic host for the world. India has taken the G20 Presidency at a crucial moment of the global economy in which we need sustainable resilient growth, we need to tackle inflation, we need to have new approaches on climate change to tackle the climate crisis. And the fourth point would be that we need to also tackle the Sustainable Development Goals. We’re halfway through and we need to have another emphasis to reach them.”

The big objective should be what the G20 can do to contribute sustainable, resilient growth, jump-start the engines of trade and investment, and focus on a structural reform agenda necessary to tackle inflation, he said when discussing the focus point of the upcoming Sherpa meeting.

Andreas Schaal said, “I mean, the big goal should be what can the G20 do to contribute to sustainable, resilient growth, kick-start the engines of trade and investment, focus on a structural reform agenda which is needed in country tackling inflation, really taking care of the people who are suffering due to high energy prices because of the war in Ukraine. So, there are things which are on the economic front, there are things you need to see.”
“We had 38 degrees today here in India, which is maybe normal, but in Europe, we had lot of heat, we had a lot of rain. So, I mean, the climate crisis is there…from this week, some decisive commitments from countries on fighting climate change, which is India promoting a Green Development Pact, the Lifestyle for Environment, Lifestyle for Sustainable Development. So, India is tackling and addressing these issues and we very much look forward to meaningful outcomes,” he added.

G20: India’s presidency an exceptional and unprecedented opportunity, says Experts

The experts across the world regarded India’s presidency as an exceptional and unprecedented opportunity with immense scope and potential. India has embarked the year-long journey of G20 presidency with the motto of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.”

There is an immense opportunity for steering international coordination towards economic stability and prosperity which is in general an over arching goal of G20 organization. However, there is something more quintessential to India’s Presidency which led experts and officials to attach a lot of expectations to it.

Beginning as an organisation addressing macroeconomic issues and financial risks, the G20 has shown the spirit of pluralism and contextual relevance by splitting itself into Finance and Sherpa streams. Moreover, the Sherpa track, dealing with various developmental issues across the globe, has over time expanded to include working groups on developmental issues related to the digital economy, environment, education, employment, and so on.

G20: Global decision-making doesn’t reflect today’s politics, says Jaishankar

External Affairs Ministers, S Jaishankar on Thursday stated that the decision making at multilateral organization like the United Nations doesn’t reflect the realities of present-day politics, aspirations or economics of the people at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

While highlighting the flaws in the global decision-making process at the United Nations while addressing the foreign delegates at G20 FMM, Jaishankar said, “Current global architecture is in its 8th decade. The number of members of the UN has quadrupled in this period.

“It neither reflects today’s politics, economics, demographics or aspirations. Since 2005, we have heard sentiments for reform being expressed at the highest level. But as we all know, these have not materialised. The reasons are no secret either. The longer we put it off, the more the credibility of multilateralism stands eroded. Global decision-making must be democratised if it has to have a future.”

The G20 FMM commenced with a minute’s silence observed for those who lost their lives in the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

“Before I commence proceedings, let us observe a minute of silence in memory of the many who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria. Our deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” said Jaishankar.

India’s G20 presidency has tried to give a voice to global south, says PM Modi

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi addressed the meeting of Foreign Ministers of G20 through a video message today, March 2. While addressing the gathering, the PM Modi underlined why India chose the theme of “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” for its G20 Presidency.

According to the Prime Minister, the theme signals the need for unity of purpose as well as the unity of action. Furthermore, he expressed the belief that today’s meeting will reflect the spirit of coming together for achieving common and concrete objectives.

Modi remarked “India’s G20 presidency has tried to give a voice to the Global South,” as he hinted that no group can claim global leadership without listening to those most affected by its decision.

First Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion G20 summit to start in Kolkata

The first G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) meeting under G20 India Presidency is scheduled to be held from 9th January to 11th January 2023 in Kolkata. The city has been decked up for the event. Tight security has been ensured for the delegates.

As per officials, principles of digital financial inclusion, remittance costs and SME finance availability will be the key focus of the summit. The meeting will open with a Symposium on “Unlocking the potentials of Digital Public Infrastructure for advancing financial inclusion and productivity gains”. This will also involve a “Digital innovations for Financial Inclusion” exhibition. A domestic outreach programme on digital financial literacy involving over 1,800 students from various schools is also part of the programme.

The inaugural session will be addressed by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. GPFI member countries, guest countries and international organisations invited by India, will take part in the meeting. Twelve international speakers including senior officials from the World Bank, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, France and Estonia will attend this G20 meeting.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee may also attend the meeting on Monday, a Union Finance Ministry official said. She is likely to promote West Bengal as an ideal destination for investments.

India’s G20 presidency will reflect interests of global south, says Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar stated on Tuesday, two days before India takes over the G20 presidency, that New Delhi would like to use the group’s presidency to represent the interests and concerns of the global south in the present.

During the annual flagship event that the Ministry of External Affairs and Carnegie India jointly organise, Jaishankar made these comments. This year’s Summit will focus on the geopolitics of technology.

“India would like to use the presidency of G20 in many ways to reflect interests and concerns today of the global south as we feel they’re being sidelined and not just be a voice but would like to take into global south something we’ve tested and prepared at home,” said EAM at Global Tech Summit.

On the issue of climate change, Jaishankar said, “Since 2014 there’s been a different kind of approach to climate change in terms of our policies, advocacies, energy mix… When it comes to climate tech, India has a range of possibilities… There are Indian businesses in climate in COP now.”

He further added, “We’re actually already seeing the impact of climate events and climate change on politics. An example would be- the big debate today in Europe is if it will be able to survive the winter from the energy perspective.”

He noted that there is an intensification in big power competition and various past agreements will discontinue. He said, “We have already seen in the last few days, there are agreements which are not being renewed. It will become much harder to have new understandings.”

He while mentioning the importance of data in national security he said, “Where our data is going is no longer matter of business and economics but of national security. Everything is being weaponised in this world of ours, I have to change my approach of where I should be protective of my interests.”
