Meanwhile, Delhi Airport on Monday issued a passenger advisory due to thick fog affecting operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. The advisory stated that while landings and take-offs are continuing, flights not compliant with CAT III may be affected. Passengers were urged to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information, and any inconvenience caused was regretted.

To cope with the fog, Delhi Airport authorities activated the anti-fog landing system, technically known as the CAT-III Instrument Landing System (ILS). The CAT III system aids precision approach and landing in conditions of low runway visibility.
Flight operations at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad were also impacted by dense fog.

As the cold wave tightened its grip on North India, Delhi experienced an even colder morning with dense fog. The temperature on Monday morning was recorded at 9.4 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Visibility dropped to 125 meters in several parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

Haryana’s Ambala City experienced dense fog, reducing visibility to zero in some areas, as chilly waves swept through the region on Saturday. The thick fog prompted motorists to exercise caution, slowing down their vehicles and using lights for safe navigation. Despite the cold, the locals found delight in this transformation. Many embraced the foggy weather, relishing their morning strolls in the fresh air after a period of smog.

With the conclusion of November’s rainy spell, the advent of December brought along a veil of fog, pleasantly surprising residents during their early morning walks. The fog-laden ambiance created a snug setting for those enjoying their walks or sipping hot tea at local tea stalls.

Residents welcomed the fog as a respite from the prior smoggy conditions that had made breathing challenging. They expressed contentment in breathing fresh air during their morning routines, finding solace in the warmth of hot tea to combat the intensifying cold.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) held a virtual media briefing, addressed by Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, forecasting the above-normal minimum and maximum temperatures for December 2023 across the country. The IMD stated that minimum temperatures are expected to be higher in most regions, while maximum temperatures are expected to exceed normal levels across the country, with the exception of certain areas in central and northern India.

IMD further noted that during the forthcoming winter season (December 2023 to February 2024), above-normal minimum temperatures are expected across most parts of the country. Additionally, above-normal maximum temperatures are projected for many regions, except certain areas in central and northwest India.

Regarding cold waves, IMD forecasted below-normal occurrences over the country’s north, northwest, central, east, and northeast during the winter season of December 2023 to February 2024.

Tejashwi Yadav, the deputy chief minister of Bihar, flagged off around 100 vehicle-mounted fogging machines and 375 motorcycle-borne teams armed with larvicides for a stepped-up anti-dengue campaign on Sunday.

The number of cases in Patna alone has surpassed 3,000, with an estimated 4000 people in Bihar infected.

Yadav, who launched the campaign from Gandhi Maidan, stated that all concerned departments are working on a war footing to contain the disease.

“Fogging and anti-larvae drive will be conducted regularly and efficiently. Hospitals are also geared up to deal with the cases related to dengue,” Yadav, who is also the minister for health, and urban and housing department, said.

Animesh Parashar, commissioner of the Patna Municipal Corporation, stated that macro-level planning has been completed to ensure ward-wise fogging of malathion mixed with diesel and spraying of larvicide in stagnant water to control the spread of mosquitoes.

“Each ward has been divided into five sectors so that the fogging cycle can be completed in two days. As many as 19 quick response teams are already active to take care of hotspots,” the commissioner said.

Suspecting that the increase in mosquito population is due to delayed rains, Parashar stated that sufficient quantities of chemicals such as lime power and bleaching power have been made available at all six circles within the corporation.

“Authorised suppliers of chemicals of malathion and larvicide have opened their kiosks at the PMC office to ensure timely and adequate availability in a transparent way,” he added.

After four days of incessant rainfall, a shallow fog engulfed parts of the national capital on Wednesday morning which leads to poor visibility.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a minimum temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius will be experienced by Delhi’s people.

Meanwhile, the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) recorded 153 on 12 October which is unhealthy for sensitive groups.

“Unprecedented rains received last week in Delhi-NCR have changed the temperatures. Now, early mornings & evenings are very cold, which causes restricted movement. So, fog, smog, and pollution tend to collect more”, Dr. Nikhil Modi, Sr Pulmonologist, at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital said.

“The change in the temperatures brings in more patients of Asthma, COPD, and Bronchitis. Further the smog and fog, we are experiencing, will bring more patients suffering from the diseases mentioned above”, Dr. Nikhil added.

“Asthma starts at a young age. So, children are getting more and more affected by this. We are witnessing many cases in which children are suffering from increased cough and breathlessness,” Dr. Nikhil Modi said.

Moreover, on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, many parts of Delhi witnessed heavy rainfall, and the weather forecasting agency has not issued a warning or alert for Delhi.

“As per the latest analysis, rainfall activity is occurring over north India due to interaction between western disturbance which is at the middle and upper troposphere, and at the lower level, there is a because its cyclonic circulation over the Gujarat region and from there the moisture because the wind is coming towards the Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR region and East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh. If we see the rainfall activity till 8:50 am in the morning, heavy to heavy rainfall occurred mainly over the UP and MP, Gujarat, and Konkan region,” RK Jenamani, Scientist, IMD, said.

However, in the Pir Panjal mountain range of the Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir received a fresh spell of snowfall.
