</excerpt>

San Saba, Concho, and Colorado River sections are under River Flood Warnings after torrential downpours caused life-threatening flash flooding throughout Central Texas on Friday. The Guadalupe River has passed its all-time record level, resulting in severe flooding in Kerrville and throughout Kerr County.

Urgent Texas Alert Issued by National Weather Service

The National Weather Service in San Angelo issued an urgent alert at 10:30 a.m. CDT, warning residents: “River Flood Warnings have been issued for parts of the San Saba, Concho, and Colorado Rivers. Do not venture out today if you don’t have to. If you have to travel, please turn around if you come across a flooded roadway.”

Rapid River Rise in Comfort and Kerrville

In Comfort, the Guadalupe River crested 22 feet within 30 minutes, between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m., at 29.86 feet.

In Kerrville, the river rose 21.6 feet in one hour, from 3:45 a.m. to 4:45 a.m. It is currently at 11.64 feet, well over flood stage. Further upstream in Hunt, the river is in moderate flood stage, at 13.99 feet.

Texas Governor Abbott Responds to Devastating Hill Country Floods

Governor of Texas Greg Abbott released a statement about the flooding in Kerrville.

“Texas is providing all necessary resources to Kerrville, Ingram, Hunt and the entire Texas Hill Country dealing with these devastating floods,” Abbott said. “The State of Texas today has mobilized additional resources in addition to the resources sent in preparation for the storms. I urge Texans to heed guidance from state and local officials and monitor local forecasts to avoid driving into flooded areas.”

Acting Governor Dan Patrick Warns of Continued Risk

Acting Governor Dan Patrick also issued a statement, saying, “I am working in coordination with the state’s emergency response team on the significant flooding that occurred in the Hill Country and Concho Valley regions in the early hours of this morning. The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office has reported catastrophic flooding in the area, with several people missing and confirmed loss of life. Additional rain is forecast in those areas. Even if the rain is light, more flooding can occur in those areas. There is an ongoing threat for possible flash flooding from San Antonio to Waco for the next 24 to 48 hours in addition to the continued risks in west and central Texas.”

Emergency crews conduct rescues amid treacherous conditions, while authorities warn of more rain and continued isolation for thousands in affected regions like Taree.
</excerpt>

Fast in movement floodwaters rose in parts of eastern Australia on Wednesday, which left residents perched on roofs and homes filled as constant rain continued to pummel the area. Authorities reported more rain to come which in turn made the crisis worse.

In some parts of New South Wales there has been over four months’ worth of rain within a 48 hour period. Homes, roads, and businesses have gone under by the muddied floodwaters which turned towns into islands.

We report that in which we see very heavy and hard rain which isn’t going anywhere. In part this is because the ground is at saturation point and the rivers are full said Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib.

Watch Live Updates:

Taree Among Worst-Hit Areas

The town of Taree, which is some 300 km (180 miles) north of Sydney, has become a major issue for emergency teams. For four days now Taree has seen 415 mm (16.34 in) of rain which is more than four times the normal May rainfall.

Water in the Taree area of the river rose to what was a 1929 record which was broken this week to a height of 6.3 meters (20.6 feet) on Wednesday report officials. Also we saw a quick rise in the water which forced many residents to go to the upper levels of their homes and wait for rescue.

Taree resident Holly Pillotto which found herself stuck upstairs reported via a live interview with Channel Nine. “Also our neighbors on the back verandah are trapped here” she said. “This is a very dangerous place to be.

Rescue Operation Underway

Emergency services at great strain as they respond to the crisis. “We had to rescue many from rooftops and upper floors of houses” reported State Emergency Service Chief Superintendent Dallas Byrnes.

However, weather is breaking down rescue efforts. “We are in very poor conditions which may in fact see air assets grounded all day, Byrnes reported.

We are fully focused on reaching those stranded.

Thousands Remain Isolated

Authorities reported that which is a 16,000 person 7,400 home figure which will be without services into at least Thursday. Also we are to see more heavy rain in the coming 48 hours, some areas may see an additional 200 millimeters (7.87 inches) before we see an improvement.

Scientists report that they are seeing an increase in the number as well as the force of extreme weather events due to climate change. As the world warms we are also seeing more heat waves, storms, and at present very serious flooding in Australia.

This giant snake, probably Reticulated Python, was bobbing around in the flood water in Southern Thailand,’ wrote one X user who shared the video.

Details of the Viral Python Video Footage captures a python with an apparently distended stomach floating in the floodwaters. According to reports, the snake swallowed a dog before it was filmed. The video has generated more than 11.5 million views on X and sparked reactions from viewers across the globe.

Many said they fear snakes. Said one, “Snakes are not my thing.” Added another, “Nor mine. at all!

“Some are speculating on its condition: that it “looks dead and bloated. That’s why it won’t move from the spot.” Some just said, “That is a reticulated python upside down, meaning dead or in extreme stress,”.

Another commenter remarked: “My surprised look when I noticed he already swallowed something – hopefully not a human being.” What is a reticulated python?

The snake featured in the video is thought to be a reticulated python, which is one of the world’s largest snake species. The Atlanta Zoo claims that such pythons can reach over 20 feet in length and are easily identified by their “complex, diamond-shaped patterns” along their backs. In addition, they have rows of sharp, recurved teeth and are therefore efficient predators.

Effects of Flooding in Thailand Torrential rains that have pounded Thailand in recent times have led to catastrophic flooding. Downpours that have left at least 25 dead and displaced more than 30,000 have been confirmed by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. Flooding has ravaged both humans and wildlife as this python’s disturbing trip through floodwaters testifies. This viral video is portrayed through the effects of extreme weather events, mostly unexpected and eerie, to viewers.

Torrential Rains in Pondicherry

The Union Territory experienced unprecedented rainfall, marking its highest record in 30 years. The torrential downpour left many streets submerged, creating challenging conditions for both residents and stray animals. While humans found refuge in their homes, the plight of animals caught in the deluge was a stark reminder of the calamity’s broader impact.

A heart-wrenching video from a waterlogged street in Pondicherry captured the struggle of a stray dog partially submerged in rainwater. The animal, standing near a closed shop, appeared to be seeking assistance as the floodwaters continued to rise.

The video showed a compassionate local stepping in to help the stranded dog. Carefully approaching the animal, the man lifted it from the waterlogged roadside, seemingly intending to move it to a safer location.

News agency ANI shared the video on social media, writing, “A Dog stuck in the water was rescued as a flood-like situation continues in parts of Puducherry following incessant rainfall.”

The government mobilizes extra troops, but survivors are calling for urgent assistance amid blocked roads, missing residents, and a lack of essential supplies.
</excerpt>

The flood crisis in Spain has intensified, with the death toll soaring to 205, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in the country’s history. In Valencia, where floodwaters have destroyed infrastructure, roads, and homes, authorities warned that more rain is likely, placing the region on an amber alert.

Struggles in Rescue Efforts and Rising Anger

Residents in some of the hardest-hit areas, such as the towns of Alfafar and Masanasa, report limited access to food, water, and essential services. Floodwaters have left streets blocked and bridges impassable, forcing some survivors to evacuate on foot. As frustrations mount, many locals are relying on each other and local police rather than national aid.

Additional Troops and Emergency Services Mobilized

In response to the escalating crisis, Spain’s government deployed an additional 1,000 troops to the affected regions, with 500 more scheduled to arrive over the weekend. Defense Minister Margarita Robles emphasized the critical need for resources to clear flooded areas, rescue residents trapped in basements, and restore basic services. “This is an unprecedented tragedy,” Robles said, calling it an extreme weather event linked to the climate crisis.

Residents Appeal for Help as Supplies Dwindle

With many cut off from basic resources, residents are taking matters into their own hands. In Alfafar, the local mayor, Juan Ramón Adsuara, described desperate efforts to distribute food and supplies to those isolated by the floodwaters. “We’re out of everything,” he said, pleading for national aid as his community continues to battle the aftermath of the floods.

Community Solidarity and Political Tensions

Despite repeated calls from local officials, assistance has been slow. Thousands of volunteers from nearby areas have shown up on foot, armed with shovels, food, and water to aid in relief efforts. The response has sparked criticism of emergency services, with some officials blaming the delay in alerts for the high number of casualties.

Climate Crisis Link and Future Precautions

The Valencia floods highlight Spain’s growing vulnerability to extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change. As communities rebuild and grieve their losses, government officials are focusing on immediate relief efforts and longer-term climate resilience strategies.

The flooding has been exacerbated by heavy water discharge from the Kosi Barrage in Birpur, triggered by relentless rainfall in the catchment areas of Nepal. Water levels in several rivers have risen to dangerous levels across multiple bordering districts.

Relief Efforts and Government Response

In response to the crisis, the Congress State Office has distributed relief material to affected areas. Congress MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh has criticized the government for its handling of the situation, urging it to be more proactive in assisting flood victims. He questioned the efficacy of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, stating, “If he does not work even during a calamity, then what is he the chief minister for?”

Chief Minister Kumar has inspected flood-affected areas and monitored ongoing relief efforts, according to a statement from his office. The recent release of a massive volume of water from the Kosi and Gandak barrages has impacted northern Bihar and Nepal, leading to further flooding, particularly in Sitamarhi, where a breach in the Mandar dam occurred on September 29.

Community Support Initiatives

As rivers such as the Bagmati, Kamla Balan, and Adhwara Group swell, several villages have become submerged. On October 3, many residents in the Aurai block of Muzaffarpur were forced to leave their homes due to extensive flooding, with some erecting makeshift tents using tarpaulin sheets along the roadside for temporary shelter.

Muzaffarpur District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen indicated that the rise in water levels has been attributed to breaches in dams across Sitamarhi and Sheohar districts, assuring continuous monitoring of the situation. To support displaced individuals, community kitchens have been established in the most affected areas, particularly in the two hardest-hit districts.

While floodwaters have receded in some regions, including Supaul, Sitamarhi, and West Champaran, many residents continue to face challenges as recovery efforts proceed.

</excerpt>

Dramatic video footage released by officials in Pinellas County reveals a Tesla igniting in flames within a Florida garage that was flooded due to Hurricane Helene. This alarming incident serves as a cautionary tale for electric vehicle owners in storm-affected regions. The surveillance footage captures the fire igniting beneath the vehicle and rapidly spreading, completely engulfing the car in less than a minute. Thick smoke quickly fills the cluttered garage.

Watch:

A Warning for Electric Vehicle Owners

The warning comes in the wake of Hurricane Helene, which caused significant flooding in Florida, North Carolina, and other southeastern states. The Pinellas County Government shared the surveillance video on Facebook Saturday to alert electric vehicle owners about the associated risks.

“Electric Vehicles that have been flooded in saltwater can catch fire. If you evacuated and left an electric vehicle or golf cart in your garage or under a building and you are not able to get to it or move it, we want you to let us know,” the county stated in a Facebook post.

Watch:

Precautionary Measures Advised

Officials also encouraged electric car owners to take preventive measures to avoid similar situations. Pinellas County advised against charging, driving, or storing electric vehicles or E-bikes in homes or garages. Additionally, they recommended moving the electric vehicle at least 50 feet away from combustible materials and having it towed to a dealership for inspection.

Hurricane Helene’s Impact

Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region late Thursday as a Category 4 storm, delivering 140 mph winds and widespread destruction. As it moved through Georgia, the Carolinas, and Tennessee, the hurricane uprooted trees, damaged homes, caused creeks and rivers to overflow, spawned tornadoes, and strained dams. The powerful storm resulted in at least 93 fatalities and left millions without power, according to the New York Post.

Relief Efforts

President Joe Biden plans to visit the areas affected by Hurricane Helene this week, contingent on not disrupting ongoing rescue and recovery operations. He assured that his administration is providing all available resources to support the affected states. The American Red Cross has initiated a large-scale relief effort, deploying over 1,400 disaster workers and opening numerous shelters for those impacted.

The IMD warned that surface run-off and inundation could occur in areas with already saturated soils and low-lying regions due to expected rain over the next 24 hours. Additionally, nine districts in the state were under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall, which will remain in effect on Tuesday, according to the Shimla office of the IMD.

In a related development, the Chandigarh-Manali highway was blocked for over four hours on Monday due to a landslide near Nine Mile, between Mandi and Pandoh. Heavy debris from the hillside covered the road, trapping three vehicles, including a truck and a bus. The road, closed at 5 a.m., was not cleared until after extensive restoration efforts. This blockage caused long vehicle queues and disrupted travel for essential and important work. Even after reopening, a traffic jam persisted for an additional hour.

The foreigners, wearing backpacks and holding onto the ripper’s edge for support, were being transported through the flooded streets.

The heavy rainfall led to an acute flood situation in several districts of Gujarat, with Vadodara being the hardest hit. Some areas of the city were submerged under 10 to 12 feet of water. People stranded in their houses and on rooftops in Vadodara were rescued and relocated to safer places by teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and three columns of the Army, which were deployed to conduct rescue operations in the affected regions.

The deep depression over Gujarat that brought days of heavy rain and thundershowers intensified into a cyclone, named Cyclone Asna, off the coast of Kachchh and the adjoining areas of Pakistan, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to PTI, over 18,000 people have been relocated, and 1,200 were rescued from various flood-affected areas. The floods have claimed around 26 lives as of Friday. The Indian Air Force and other disaster management agencies continue their rescue and relief operations, with the Army using helicopters to rescue people and evacuate them to safer locations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for South Tripura and an orange alert for Dhalai and Gomati districts due to forecasts of heavy rainfall amid a severe flood crisis in the state.

Flood Crisis Claims 26 Lives

As of Sunday, the death toll from the flooding has reached 26, according to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC). Over 117,000 individuals have been displaced and are currently residing in 525 relief camps across Tripura.

Significant Economic Damage and Central Assistance

The floods have resulted in approximately ₹5000 crores in damage to the state. In response, the Central Government has approved a ₹40-crore assistance package for rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on social media that eleven teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), three Army columns, and four Air Force helicopters are actively involved in supporting the state’s emergency response.

Weather and Safety Advisory

The IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall for the coming days. In light of the ongoing situation, local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution. Educational institutions, including government, government-aided, and private schools, remain closed until further notice.

Austria is grappling with widespread flooding after heavy rains battered the Alpine regions and parts of Vienna over the weekend, causing extensive damage and major disruptions to transportation across the country.

The downpours led to chaos in the capital city, where a woman was swept under a bus by floodwaters in the Doebling district on Saturday. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, according to ORF, Austria’s national broadcaster.

Vienna’s fire services were overwhelmed with over 450 emergency calls as the torrential rain submerged streets, disrupted rail services, and brought traffic to a standstill. In some areas of the city, the rainfall reached a staggering 110 liters per square meter, setting a new record for August rainfall, said ORF Vienna meteorologist Kevin Hebenstreit.

The impact was felt across the country, with Chancellor Karl Nehammer acknowledging the extensive damage caused by the storms. “Heavy storms have done great damage in many parts of Austria,” Nehammer stated on X (formerly Twitter), expressing gratitude to the officials working tirelessly to address the aftermath.

Meteorological data from UBIMET revealed that a significant portion of Vienna’s average summer rainfall fell within just one hour on Saturday. While August typically sees around 68 liters of rain per square meter, Saturday’s downpour approached the historic record of 139 liters recorded on May 15, 1885.

As authorities continue to assess the damage, efforts are underway to restore normalcy in the flood-hit regions.

</excerpt>

The tragic deaths of three UPSC aspirants in the flooded basement of a coaching center in Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar have brought attention to civic negligence and regulatory violations. The victims, Tania Soni, Shreya Yadav, and Navin Delvin, were trapped in the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle after heavy rains inundated the area on Saturday.

The coaching center had been using the basement as a library, despite civic authorities stipulating it was only approved for storage or parking. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had issued a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) in August 2021, specifically stating the basement was for parking and household storage use. An NOC from the fire department, granted earlier this month, indicated the building met fire safety requirements but reiterated the basement’s use must comply with building bye-laws.

The bye-laws mandate that surface drainage should not enter basements and that sufficient exit and access points are required if the basement is used for commercial purposes. However, the Rajinder Nagar coaching center had only one entry/exit.

On the day of the incident, several students were in the library when the basement flooded. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police found the bodies of the three victims after hours of effort.

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has ordered a probe to determine if any MCD officials were negligent and emphasized that all coaching centers violating the law would face action. The police have registered a case with charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder and death due to negligence. Two individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

The tragedy has led to student protests blaming civic negligence and sparked a political blame game. The BJP has targeted the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), accusing local MLA Durgesh Pathak of neglecting drainage issues despite resident complaints. Pathak has countered, criticizing the BJP’s focus on politics rather than addressing the problem and questioning why the BJP’s councilor did not address the drainage issue during his term.

The incident underscores the critical need for strict adherence to safety regulations and proper oversight to prevent such tragedies in the future.

In his social media post, Singh questioned the state of Gurgaon’s infrastructure, highlighting the lack of response from local authorities. “I pay my taxes and bills, only to wake up and find my BMW, Mercedes, and i20 stranded and damaged,” Singh lamented on Instagram. He criticized the city’s handling of the situation and noted that despite his efforts to hire a crane, no service was willing to operate in the deep water.

The video, which depicts the waterlogged streets of Gurgaon’s Sector 57, has sparked outrage online. Singh urged his followers to tag local officials to draw attention to the issue. “This isn’t Mumbai or Bangalore; this is Gurgaon, a so-called metro city in India,” he wrote, expressing his dismay.

The heavy rains on Thursday resulted in severe flooding and waterlogging across several areas in Gurgaon. Residents have blamed the inadequate drainage system and delays in drain desilting for the flooding. Comments on social media echoed Singh’s frustration, with users criticizing the government’s response and infrastructure management. “It’s a shame to see such damage after paying hefty taxes,” one user remarked, while others pointed to the broader issue of poor water drainage in the Delhi NCR region.

Authorities have yet to address the immediate concerns raised by the residents, as the city grapples with the impact of the recent downpour.

</excerpt>

Flight operations have been disrupted due to heavy rains in Mumbai and its suburbs, leading to the cancellation and diversion of several flights. In response, Air India announced it is offering full refunds or a one-time complimentary rescheduling for confirmed bookings on Thursday.

The airline shared a link for passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. “Heavy rains in Mumbai are affecting flight operations and resulting in the cancellation and diversion of some of our flights. Air India is offering full refunds or a one-time complimentary rescheduling for bookings confirmed for travel on July 25, 2024,” posted the airline on X. The airline further advised passengers to verify their flight status before traveling to the airport.

Earlier, the airline had warned passengers about potential disruptions due to the heavy rainfall. “Flights to and from Mumbai may be affected due to heavy rains. Guests are advised to start early for the airport, as slow traffic and waterlogging may delay movement,” the airline stated in a morning post.

Earlier in the day, the Andheri Subway in Mumbai was closed for vehicular movement due to waterlogging from persistent rainfall. The heavy downpours have caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Mumbai and its suburbs, bringing back familiar issues.

Overnight rainfall disrupted some public transport services, causing inconvenience to many commuters. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, “Today’s weather forecast at 8 am suggests moderate to heavy rain in the city and suburbs.” The forecast also warned of the possibility of very heavy rainfall in isolated areas, along with occasional gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph.

The BMC reported that heavy rains have increased water storage in reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai, with four reservoirs – Vihar, Tulsi, Tansa, and Modaksagar – currently overflowing. As a result, the 10% water cut in Mumbai’s water supply will be withdrawn starting Monday, July 29. The BMC is also lifting the 10% water cut for Thane City, Bhiwandi, and Outside City Division Grampanchyats, where water is supplied by BMC, from the same date.

Additionally, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Maharashtra on Thursday, predicting extremely heavy rainfall. On Wednesday, an orange alert was issued for the state, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 to 204.4 mm) from July 26 to July 27 in Maharashtra. An orange alert was also issued for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts in Maharashtra’s Konkan region.

</excerpt>

Amidst Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia on July 9, 2024, a significant domestic development has surfaced — India’s plan to invest $1 billion in hydropower plants in Arunachal Pradesh. This initiative comes amidst a tense border dispute with China, overshadowing the dire situation unfolding in Assam due to relentless floods.

Hydropower Investment Amid Border Tensions

According to a critical report from Reuters, India is gearing up to pour $1 billion into hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh. This move aims to bolster India’s renewable energy capacity but has sparked concerns over its potential impact on downstream regions, particularly Assam.

Flood Toll Rises in Assam

Simultaneously, Assam has been grappling with escalating casualties from floods, which have claimed 79 lives since May. The situation is exacerbated by the existing dams in Arunachal Pradesh, which release surplus water when nearing capacity, posing a constant threat to downstream areas like Assam.

Impending Catastrophe Feared

Experts warn of a looming disaster if any of the proposed dams in Arunachal Pradesh were to fail catastrophically. The devastating 2021 incident at the Tapovan Vishnugad Hydroelectric Project serves as a grim reminder of the destructive power of such failures, claiming over 150 lives in a flash flood.

Government’s Revival of Hydro Projects

In August last year, the Indian government, in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh government, initiated efforts to revive and launch 12 stalled hydroelectric power projects in the state. These projects, with a combined capacity of approximately 11,517 MW, are seen as crucial to achieving India’s renewable energy goals and reducing carbon emissions.

Challenges and Environmental Concerns

Initially assigned to private developers around 15 years ago, these projects faced numerous setbacks. Their revival is part of India’s commitment to meet its Nationally Determined Contribution targets and aim for Net Zero carbon emissions by 2070. However, environmentalists and local communities raise concerns about the potential ecological impact and the safety of downstream populations.

As India pushes forward with ambitious hydropower plans in Arunachal Pradesh, the dual challenges of environmental sustainability and disaster preparedness loom large. The government’s efforts to balance energy security with ecological responsibility will be closely scrutinized amidst ongoing tensions and humanitarian crises in the region.

</excerpt>

The village of Ruidoso has been thrust into chaos as severe rainfall triggered life-threatening flash floods, prompting the National Weather Service to declare an emergency until 6 p.m. Tuesday. The situation has necessitated urgent evacuations from several neighborhoods and mobilized the New Mexico National Guard into action.

Residents in Cedar Creek, Upper Canyon, Brady Canyon, Cherokee Mobile Village, Paradise Canyon, and areas near Rio Ruidoso have been ordered to evacuate immediately. Authorities stressed the gravity of the situation, urging citizens not to delay and move to higher ground without attempting to salvage belongings.

In response to the escalating crisis, the White Mountain Relief Center at 687 Hull Road has been established as a shelter for those displaced by the floods. Essential infrastructure has been severely impacted, with all bridge crossings in Ruidoso shuttered due to inundation, including critical points such as Paradise Canyon, Gavilan Canyon Road, Brady Canyon, and others.

Further compounding the emergency, reports have surfaced of multiple gas leaks across the village, believed to be a direct consequence of the flooding. Village officials issued a stark warning via social media, advising residents to steer clear of any gas odors and promptly report incidents to Zia Natural Gas.

The deluge has also cast a shadow over major thoroughfares including Highway 48, Highway 70, Main Road, Paradise Canyon Road, and Gavilan Canyon Road, raising concerns about extended impact and accessibility.

As emergency responders and local authorities work tirelessly to manage the crisis, residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and heed evacuation orders for their safety. The unfolding situation in Ruidoso serves as a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictable force and the community’s resilience in the face of adversity.

</excerpt>

Live updates from Mumbai: Heavy rainfall continues to cause chaos across Maharashtra’s capital, leading to Extensive disturbances. Schools colleges and all the educational institutions are closed today, and train services have been suspended in various parts of Mumbai and nearby regions due to waterlogging on tracks and stations.300 mm of rain within six hours ending at 7 am on Monday, causing roads and low-lying areas to be overflowed.

Throughout the day, Mumbai has been lashed by heavy rains, worsening the challenges faced by residents and resulting in all educational closures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red’ alert for Mumbai on Tuesday, forecasting heavy rainfall. Mumbai is expected to experience intense rainfall expected today, likely causing delays and cancellations in local train services and flights.

On Monday, Mumbai recorded its second-highest July rainfall in 24 hours, with a very heavy 300 mm of rain in just six hours. From midnight to 3 am on Tuesday, the city recorded 170 mm of rainfall. The red alert for Mumbai is expected to remain in effect until 8:30 am.

Despite installing high-capacity pumps in flood-prone areas, Central Railway services have been significantly delayed due to waterlogging caused by incessant rains. This has grounded thousands of passengers, with local trains halted on tracks for extended durations. Flight operations have also been impacted by low visibility and waterlogging on runways, resulting in more than 50 flight cancellations on Monday, according to Press Trust of India [PTI].

In response to a heavy rainfall alert issued by the India Meteorological Department [IMD] for Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Pune, and rural areas of Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, schools and junior colleges will remain closed on Tuesday as well. The weather office has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Satara, Pune, and Sindhudurg districts, and an orange alert for Thane and Palghar Tuesday for now that is July 9, it may even extend keeping in mind about the Weather.

The inclement weather has caused extensive damage in Mangan district, claiming six lives and disrupting road connectivity, power, food, and mobile networks. Of the stranded tourists, approximately 1,200 are domestic, with others hailing from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Thailand.

Sikkim’s chief secretary, Vijay Bhushan Pathak, stated, “There is no major destruction in Lachung, Lachen, and Chungthang. We have sent a requisition for the air force and helicopter. Once the weather improves, we will evacuate the tourists.” The state’s principal secretary of tourism and civil aviation, C S Rao, assured that the stranded tourists, including foreigners, were safe with access to food and water. If required, they will be evacuated by road.

Mangan District Magistrate Hem Kumar Chettri expressed hope that the tourists would be evacuated by Sunday, contingent on weather conditions. A relief camp has been set up at Pakshep, and while electricity has been restored, mobile networks remain down. The Met office has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and northeast India over the next 4-5 days.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang chaired a high-level meeting to assess the situation, urging stranded tourists to remain in their current locations and avoid unnecessary risks. Landslides have blocked roads, houses have been inundated or damaged, and electricity poles swept away due to the heavy rain. The chief minister’s meeting was aimed at strategizing and coordinating the response to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of residents.

</excerpt>

Continuous rainfall, induced by cyclone Remal, has led to flooding across various districts in Manipur. Consequently, the state government has launched active rescue and relief efforts.

In response to breaches in embankments along riverbanks causing severe flooding, the government declared a two-day public holiday until May 31 for all state offices, urging citizens to remain indoors unless faced with emergencies. Essential service departments, including home affairs, police, relief and disaster management, power, health, district administration, and water resources, will remain operational during this period.

Rescue operations are ongoing in badly affected areas of Imphal East and Imphal West districts. Fishermen from Thanga in Bishnupur district are aiding the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) in evacuating flood-affected individuals using traditional canoes, with similar efforts being made in other locations such as Laipham Khunou and Khuman Lampak.

Agricultural areas in Nambol, Bishnupur district, have been severely affected by flooding due to breaches in riverbanks. The Chief Minister commended the efforts of Thanga fishermen for their assistance in rescue operations. In Nambol, Bishnupur district, where two tributaries of the Nambul river breached banks, extensive agricultural land has been inundated.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed forty personnel along with six additional motorboats to lead rescue operations. Commercial activities at Khwairamband, Paona, and Thangal markets remained suspended due to inundation caused by river overflow and embankment breaches.

Moreover, heavy rains triggered a landslide in Tamenglong district, affecting the Imphal-Silchar route. Additionally, flooding occurred in Wangoi constituency due to the breach of the Nambul river banks at Samurou in Imphal West district.

</excerpt>

At least 155 individuals have lost their lives due to flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Tanzania, according to Al Jazeera. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, in a parliamentary address, attributed the severity of the current rainy season to the El Nino climate pattern, leading to widespread flooding and damage to infrastructure.

“The heavy El Nino rains, accompanied by strong winds, floods, and landslides in various parts of the country, have caused significant damage,” Majaliwa stated. He also pointed to unsustainable farming practices such as “slash and burn” agriculture, uncontrolled livestock grazing, and deforestation as contributing factors to the disastrous impacts of the rains.

Majaliwa reported that more than 51,000 houses and over 200,000 individuals were affected by the rains. Emergency services are working to rescue those stranded by flooding, and schools have been closed due to inundation, as per Al Jazeera.

Additionally, over 226 people have been injured due to the floods and rains in Tanzania, as heavy downpours continue to affect East Africa. The El Nino weather phenomena, which is linked to rising global temperatures, droughts, and heavy precipitation, is a natural occurrence.

The East African region has experienced unusually heavy rainfall during this rainy season, with reports of flooding also coming in from neighboring Burundi and Kenya.

On Tuesday, heavy rainfall necessitated the diversion of numerous incoming flights at Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest hub for international passengers. The airport, which usually sees over 100 flight arrivals on a typical evening, experienced an unusual suspension of arrivals, resuming gradually after 25 minutes. Although departure flights resumed in the evening, there were significant delays and cancellations in flight operations.

Social media videos depict planes taxiing along inundated runways and vehicles partially submerged in the airport parking lot. The access roads to the airport were also flooded.

Significant infrastructure in the city, such as major shopping centers like Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, experienced flooding, with ankle-deep water reported in at least one Dubai Metro station. Roads gave way, residential areas were underwater, and there were numerous reports of leaks from roofs, doors, and windows in many homes.

The storm’s effects reached beyond Dubai, affecting the whole UAE and neighboring Bahrain with widespread flooding and disruption. Schools throughout the Emirates have been shut down, and with more storms, including hail, predicted for today, authorities have prolonged remote working for government employees, reports AFP.

In Oman, the initial impact of the storms brought severe devastation, with flash floods causing the deaths of 18 individuals, children among them. Bahrain also suffered from flooding as a result of the storms.

Both Oman and the UAE, hosts of the previous year’s COP28 UN climate conference, have warned of the increased likelihood of flooding as a consequence of global warming.

Despite the challenging conditions, they ensured the safe passage of people and the delivery of essential supplies.

The heavy rains caused havoc in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari, resulting in numerous casualties. In response, the state government and the Centre collaborated to launch a massive rescue and relief operation. Prime Minister Modi personally assured his support to Tamil Nadu and assigned Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to assess the flood situation.

Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for his prompt attention to the dire situation. He highlighted “the urgent need for financial support from the Union government to address the mounting challenges faced by the state” CM Stalin said in a post on X.

In response, PM Modi assured full support from the Union government to help Tamil Nadu overcome these twin calamities. The Indian Air Force also contributed to the relief efforts by air-dropping over 11 tons of relief materials in the rain-ravaged Thoothkudi district.

While the rescue operation in the flood-affected southern districts has been completed, the focus now shifts to the restoration of basic services. However, some districts still face communication disruptions and the inundation of roads and railway tracks due to the incessant rainfall.

Western Australia has been hit by the worst floods in a century leaving many communities isolated. Australia’s weather forecaster on Sunday told severe weather system Ellie has created an emergency situation in Kimberly, in the state of western Australia which is equivalent to the size of California.

Even as the ex-cyclone moved eastward into the Northern Territory on Sunday, the Bureau of Meteorology cautioned that “record breaking heavy flooding” was still occurring in the Kimberley. “Many roads are impassable and many communities are now isolated,” the forecaster said on its website.

Residents of several tiny villages, including the tourist town of Broome, located some 1,240 miles (2,000 km) north of the state capital, Perth, have been cautioned by state emergency officials about increasing water in the area. According to officials, the flooding is the worst the state has ever experienced, and on Saturday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it “devastating” and promised help from the federal government.

Authorities stated on Saturday that Australian Defense Force planes were being utilised to assist flood-affected areas and that Chinook helicopters were on their way to assist with resident relocation.

Heavy rain triggered flash floods that cut off some inland towns in Australia’s southeast on Monday, prompting the government to issue new evacuation orders for thousands of rural residents.

The country’s fourth major flooding this year saw wild weather wreak havoc on parts of southwest New South Wales (NSW) and northeast Victoria overnight, bursting river banks and exacerbating the misery of flood-weary residents.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the flash flooding was “creating dangerous conditions” and that the federal government was coordinating rescue efforts with the states.

Roads, bridges, and farms were submerged in rural New South Wales.

Molong, about 300 kilometres (186 miles) northwest of Sydney, was one of the towns impacted by heavy flooding. Social media footage showed a shipping container and household items floating through the town center.

“Almost every shop went under,” Mayor Kevin Beatty told radio station 2GB. He said what appeared to be a shipping container or a caravan was stuck on the highway near the town, making it harder for emergency crews to reach Molong.

After officials determined that an evacuation would be unsafe due to flash flooding, residents in Eugowra, population 800, were ordered to relocate to higher ground.

The east coast of Australia is experiencing a rare third consecutive year of the La Nina weather phenomenon, which is associated with increased rainfall.

There are currently over 100 flood warnings in NSW and 84 in Victoria after weather bureau data revealed that some areas received more than a month’s worth of rain in less than 24 hours.

“We’ve seen a lot of flash flooding where streets have been awash. We’ve had water then entering homes … ankle-deep water in some places,” Victoria state emergency operations chief Tim Wiebusch told.

Over the weekend, South Australia experienced heavy rain and thunderstorms. Hundreds of schools have been forced to close, and thousands of homes remain without power.

It was announced on Tuesday that the United States will provide Pakistan USD 10 million more in assistance to tackle the devastating floods that affected more than 33 million people in the country.

“The fresh assistance was announced by Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington after meeting with Pakistani counterpart Bilawal Bhutto Zardari”, the Foreign Office said in a statement.

In addition, the Washington has already announced financial assistance of USD 56.1 million.

In his conversation with Blinken, Bilawal informed him of the destruction brought on by the catastrophic floods, which forced more than 33 million people to flee their homes. According to Pakistan, the tragedy has resulted in damages worth USD 28 billion.

He praised the government and people of Pakistan for their relief efforts and thanked the US government for its support, stating that no nation could handle a disaster of this proportion on its own.

The US private sector would prefer to invest in Pakistan, he added, notably in the country’s energy industry, given its enormous potential.

Bilawal emphasised the historical and expanding significance of the Pakistan-US relationship in fostering regional peace, security, and economic growth.

Bilawal emphasised that Pakistan would continue to collaborate with the international community to bring about peace, development, and stability in Afghanistan and stressed the importance of assisting Afghanistan to prevent the humanitarian crisis.

Secretary Blinken expressed his gratitude to Pakistan for helping with the evacuation of Afghanistan.

Specifically in the fields of commerce and investment, he emphasised Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening and enlarging its relations with the US.

Thousands of people in central Japan were without running water and electricity on Sunday after Typhoon Talas dumped record rainfall on the area, causing floods and landslides and leaving at least two people dead.

According to the AFP’s published report, the body of a man in Kakegawa city, Shizuoka region, was pulled from what remained of his house on Saturday after a landslide destroyed it.

“Another male (in neighbouring Fukuroi city) was driving to his home (Saturday) when the water level rose and his vehicle apparently stopped. While the individual tried to walk home, he was believed to have died,” a regional disaster management official said.

He stated that another man was still unaccounted for in Kawanehoncho town, Shizuoka, after his car slid into a gap that appeared in the road. He also mentioned that three other people received minor wounds.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Typhoon Talas battered central Japan on Friday and Saturday as it passed by close off the Pacific coast, pouring more than 40 centimetres (16 inches) of rain in Shizuoka villages in a single day.

Before heading back out to the Pacific on Saturday morning, it was downgraded to a depression.

Up to 120,000 homes may have lost power on Saturday as a result of the storm’s heavy rains causing landslides, including in the isolated mountains of Shizuoka. This is because several electricity pylons fell and broke as a result.

According to the local firm Chubu Electric Power, 2,910 homes in Shizuoka and the neighbouring Gifu region were still without electricity as of Sunday afternoon.

“As for those areas where restoration crews are not able to reach due to blocked roads after landslides, we will make progress while analysing the conditions of the landslides,” the utility said.

Debris choked a water inlet in Shizuoka, leaving almost 55,000 homes without running water.

“Currently, we are working to remove debris from a water inlet. But for now we are unable to give any estimate as to when it can be restored,” the regional government said in a statement Sunday morning.

Typhoons regularly cause significant damage to Japan in the summer and fall.

Typhoon Nanmadol struck southwestern Japan this weekend, leaving 147 people injured and four dead.
