</excerpt>

As Dhanteras approaches, a time celebrated for buying gold, many consumers are eager to make their purchases. However, in the rush to acquire gold during this auspicious occasion, some may overlook the crucial step of verifying purity. Unscrupulous merchants might try to sell gold of inferior quality, making it essential for buyers to know how to examine the purity of gold properly. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you ensure that your gold purchases are genuine and certified.

The Importance of BIS Hallmarking

Look for the BIS Hallmark

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) hallmark is the most reliable certification for gold purity. It guarantees that the gold meets the required purity standards. The hallmark includes crucial information, such as the purity in karats (e.g., 22K916 signifies 91.6% pure gold) and the identity of the jeweler.

Double Check the HUID Number

Every piece of hallmarked gold jewelry is assigned a unique Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number. This number aids in confirming authenticity. You can verify the HUID using the BIS Care App, which provides detailed information about the jewelry’s purity, registration, and hallmarking center.

Technology for Verification

Use the BIS Care App

Downloading the BIS Care App from your smartphone’s app store is a smart move for gold buyers. The app allows you to enter the HUID number to verify whether the gold is genuine. Additionally, it provides vital information regarding the jeweler and the hallmarking center.

Understanding Gold Purity

Purity of Karats

Gold jewelry comes in various purity levels, measured in karats. Common grades include 14K, 18K, 22K, and 24K. For significant purchases during Dhanteras, 22K gold is a popular choice for jewelry, while 24K gold is preferred for coins and bars.

Perform a Magnet Test

For a quick home inspection, you can use a magnet. Genuine gold does not react to magnets; if your gold item is attracted to a magnet, it may not be pure.

Ensure Proper Documentation

Acquire a Detailed Bill

Always request a complete bill from the jeweler that includes the gold’s weight, carat, and hallmark certification. This documentation will be helpful for any future transactions, including selling the gold.

As Dhanteras approaches, it’s essential to remain vigilant while purchasing gold. By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your gold is genuine, giving you peace of mind as you celebrate this auspicious occasion. Stay informed and make informed choices to avoid falling victim to fraudulent practices. Happy Dhanteras!

</excerpt>

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most cherished festivals in India, celebrated with devotion and grandeur. The festival is incomplete without offering prasad (sacred food) to Lord Ganesha, who is known as the remover of obstacles. Among all the offerings, modak stands out as Lord Ganesha’s favorite sweet. Let’s explore how you can make traditional prasad and different types of modak for Ganesh Chaturthi 2024!

How to Make Modak Prasad

Modak is the most popular prasad offered to Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Chaturthi. It’s a sweet dumpling made from rice flour, stuffed with jaggery and coconut. Here’s a simple guide to making the beloved ukadiche (steamed) modak:

Ingredients:
– Rice flour: 1 cup
– Jaggery: ¾ cup
– Fresh grated coconut: 1 cup
– Ghee: 1 tablespoon
– Water: 1 cup
– A pinch of salt

Steps:

1. Prepare the Dough: Boil water with a pinch of salt and ghee. Slowly add rice flour and stir continuously to avoid lumps. Cover and let it steam for a few minutes, then knead the dough until smooth.

2. Make the Filling: In a pan, melt jaggery and add grated coconut. Cook until the mixture thickens slightly.

3. Shape the Modak: Flatten small balls of dough into discs. Add the filling, pleat the edges, and close them at the top. You can also use modak molds for easier shaping.

4. Steam: Steam the modak for 10-15 minutes. Once done, drizzle a bit of ghee on top for added flavor

Different Types of Modak

While ukadiche modak is the most popular, there are many other delicious variations you can try:

Fried Modak: Instead of steaming, these modaks are deep-fried until golden and crispy. The outer layer is made from wheat or all-purpose flour, giving it a crunchier texture.

2. Mango Modak: Infused with the flavor of fresh mangoes, this unique version is rich and creamy. It’s perfect for those who love fruity desserts.

3. Chocolate Modak: A modern twist, chocolate modak combines traditional stuffing with a rich chocolate coating, making it a favorite for kids.

4. Dry Fruit Modak: Filled with chopped nuts like almonds, pistachios, and cashews, this version is healthy and delicious.

5. Rava Modak: Made from semolina (rava), this modak has a slightly coarse texture and a sweet filling, similar to the traditional one.

Other Prasad Ideas

Apart from modak, there are many other sweets you can offer during Ganesh Chaturthi:

– Panchamrut: A sacred mixture made with milk, curd, honey, sugar, and ghee.
– Coconut Ladoo: Sweet and simple, made with coconut and condensed milk.
– Besan Ladoo: A rich, gram flour-based sweet, loved by many

Conclusion

Ganesh Chaturthi is a time of joy, devotion, and delicious food. Whether you stick to the traditional ukadiche modak or experiment with newer flavors like chocolate and mango, the essence of the festival lies in the love and devotion with which you prepare these offerings. Enjoy making these sweets and offering them to Lord Ganesha this festive season!

The main celebration day, Thiruvonam, will be observed on September 15 (Sunday).
</excerpt>

Onam is a vibrant harvest and cultural festival celebrated by the Hindu Malayali community in Kerala. This annual festival takes place during the Chingam month of the Malayalam Solar Calendar, which is also referred to as Simha month in some solar calendars and Avani month in the Tamil calendar. Onam festivities are held on the day of Nakshatra Thiruvonam within Chingam.

When Is Onam 2024?

Onam 2024 will start on September 6 and end on September 17. The main celebration day, Thiruvonam, will be observed on September 15 (Sunday).

Significance of Onam

According to Hindu mythology, Mahabali, the grandson of the Brahmin sage Prahlada, conquered the three worlds by defeating the Gods. Although the gods sought help from Lord Vishnu, who initially refused to intervene due to Mahabali’s devotion and good rule, Vishnu decided to test Mahabali’s devotion. In the form of a dwarf boy named Vamana, Vishnu approached Mahabali, asking for only three paces of land. Mahabali, though surprised, agreed. Vamana then expanded to cover the entire land and sky with two paces and, to place the third foot, Mahabali offered himself. Vamana sent Mahabali to Pathala (hell) but granted him the boon to visit his land once a year. This annual visit of Mahabali is commemorated by the festival of Onam.

Rituals

Onam, celebrated as Kerala’s rice harvest festival, spans ten days, each holding its own significance. One of the key traditions is creating ‘pookkalam,’ floral designs made on the ground by women to invite King Mahabali. The festival is marked by grand feasts known as ‘onam sadya,’ which include around 13 dishes served on banana leaves, featuring rice, various dishes, pickles, and papads. Another highlight of the celebration is the grand processions featuring elephants adorned with ornaments.

</excerpt>

Ganesh Chaturthi is not just a festival but a profound spiritual experience for many, marked by the presence of Lord Ganesha’s idol. According to Vedic Astrology, the color of the Ganesh idol you choose can significantly impact the energy it emits and the rituals required for proper worship. Prashant Kapoor, an astrologer and the founder of AstroKapoor, highlights how the colors red, orange, blue, and white each bring unique divine influences to the celebration.

Red Ganesh Idol: Power and Courage

The color red, associated with Mars (Mangal), symbolizes power, courage, and determination. A red Ganesh idol is selected by those who seek to harness these powerful energies in their lives. This vibrant hue is believed to emanate a strong, warrior-like force, aiding devotees in overcoming significant challenges. However, the intensity of the red Ganesh requires careful and respectful worship, as its potent energy must be channeled with precision. For individuals ready to embrace the dynamic force of Mars, the red Ganesh idol serves as a formidable protector and guide.

Orange Ganesh Idol: Balance and Positivity

Orange, a blend of the vigor of red and the warmth of yellow, represents a balance between energy and calmness. An orange Ganesh idol is ideal for those seeking harmony and progress coupled with peace. The energy of the orange idol is both uplifting and stabilizing, making it a great choice for creating a serene and balanced atmosphere at home. The rituals for worshipping an orange Ganesh are more flexible, allowing for a gentler and effective practice that helps devotees maintain tranquility and stability in their daily lives.

Blue Ganesh Idol: Spiritual Depth

Blue, the color of the vast sky and deep ocean, signifies infinity, wisdom, and spiritual depth. Though less common, a blue Ganesh idol holds profound significance for those on a spiritual journey. The blue idol is said to resonate with energies of extensive spiritual knowledge, guiding devotees through the deeper mysteries of existence. The rituals for the blue Ganesh are often more complex, requiring a higher level of spiritual commitment. Practices may include keeping five Akhand Diyas (unbroken lamps) lit continuously, offering five meal Bhogs daily, and performing the pooja while wearing silk clothing. This idol is suited for those ready to delve into the inner depths of their soul and seek wisdom beyond the material realm, with the blue Ganesh as their spiritual guide.

White Ganesh Idol: Peace and Purity

White, symbolizing purity and peace, represents serenity and clarity. A white or natural-colored Ganesh idol embodies a calming and soothing presence, making it perfect for creating a peaceful environment at home. The energy of the white idol fosters tranquility, allowing for a space where peace can truly thrive. The rituals for the white Ganesh are simple and focus on purity of heart and intention. This idol is ideal for those who wish to cultivate a harmonious and serene space, free from intense energies, and invite the gentle presence of Lord Ganesha into their lives.

Selecting a Ganesh idol is a sacred decision, as each color brings its own unique energy to your spiritual practice. Whether you choose the dynamic strength of red, the balanced positivity of orange, the profound spiritual depth of blue, or the serene purity of white, the color of the idol will shape your worship and the blessings you receive. By understanding the mystical significance of these colors, you can align your spiritual journey with your personal goals and welcome the divine grace of Lord Ganesha into your life in a meaningful way.

</excerpt>

Authorities are investigating the death of a woman at the Burning Man festival, which began recently in the northern Nevada desert. The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office reported that the woman was found unresponsive around noon on Sunday in Black Rock City, a temporary city constructed for the festival about 100 miles north of Reno. Despite efforts by the Burning Man Project’s emergency services, the woman could not be revived.

Burning Man organizers expressed their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and stated their cooperation with local authorities in the ongoing investigation. The identity of the woman has not been released pending notification of her relatives, and the cause of death will remain under investigation until an autopsy is conducted.

The festival, which features wilderness camping and a celebration of art, began under challenging conditions with rain and muddy terrain causing the gates to be closed for 12 hours. Approximately 20,000 attendees were already present when the gates officially opened. Burning Man is expected to host over 70,000 people this year.

Since its relocation from San Francisco’s Baker Beach to Nevada’s Black Rock Desert in 1990, there have been about half a dozen reported deaths at the festival. Notable incidents include a 2014 bus accident, a 2007 trailer accident, and a 1996 motorcycle collision involving a friend of Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey.

In 2023, the 35th annual Burning Man festival saw about 73,000 attendees, with additional participation in regional events globally. The event faced disruptions from a protest blockade and rain, which turned the playa into mud, complicating travel. Despite these challenges, Burning Man remains a significant cultural gathering, temporarily becoming Nevada’s third-largest city after Las Vegas and Reno.

</excerpt>

The clouds rumbled with menacing intent, and they soon burst into a downpour that refused to subside. First, the river overflowed, which was followed by fields getting inundated, and eventually the villages that floated in the water. The villagers cried, howled and begged for mercy from Indra, to whom they had prayed for centuries. ‘It’s Indra’s wrath that we’re bearing the brunt of,’ cried one of the villagers as others agreed with him. ‘We shouldn’t have stopped praying to him.’

Only recently, on young Krishna’s insistence, they had prayed to their cows, nearby trees, fields and the surrounding mountains, including the mighty Govardhan, instead of the traditional yagna for appeasing Indra. And now they were facing Indra’s ire. Since they heeded Krishna’s words, they again turned to him for a solution.

Krishna was witness to the mayhem. Vrindavan, Gokul and its nearby villages, that till a few days ago were mesmerising and enchanting, now bore the brunt of savagery. The plight of the hapless villagers and the animals made Krishna realise that it was time to step in. Asking the villagers to gather at the base of Govardhan mountain, young Krishna lifted the mountain on his fingertip. It became a shelter for the villagers, along with the animals. For days on end, Indra thundered and spewed venom through unbearable lightning, storms and incessant rain. During all this, Krishna steadfastly held the mighty Govardhan. Soon, the villagers felt a warm embrace in Krishna’s compassionate presence, and Indra realised the futility of punishing people just because they didn’t pray to him.

Going through the old narrative, we must ask ourselves what Krishna intends to convey through his actions and words. Was he merely asking the village folks of Gokul and Vrindavan to pray to Govardhan instead of Indra? Was he asking posterity to follow suit, even if they stayed at faraway places? Or is there a deeper meaning hidden in it?

While we might revel at the rich narrative and continue with our centuries-old traditions, let Krishna’s words and actions go deep inside our hearts and minds. The story seems to offer a different perspective. Perhaps Krishna is asking us to acknowledge and connect with the accessible energy that manifests all around us. He’s asking us to revere the nature around us in its different manifestations, as it is the ultimate nourisher and protector. This Janmasthami, while we continue with our traditional worship, let’s also acknowledge the importance of the nature around us and reverently bow down to it. Merely touching a vernal wood, caring for a stray animal, or planting a sapling could be an ideal starting point. That’ll definitely please Krishna, the ultimate eco warrior.

Blurb:

This Janmasthami, while we continue with our traditional worship, let’s also acknowledge the importance of the nature around us and reverently bow down to it. That’ll definitely please Krishna, the ultimate eco warrior.

</excerpt>

Fasting on Janmashtami is an integral part of the celebrations, involving day-long prayers, devotional songs, and recitations of sacred texts like the Bhagavad Gita and Krishna Leela.

Janmashtami is a major Hindu festival marking the birth of Lord Krishna. It falls on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the Bhadrapada month, which typically falls in August or September. This year, Janmashtami will be observed on August 26, 2024 (Monday). The term “Janmashtami” combines “Janma” (birth) and “Ashtami” (the eighth day according to the Hindu calendar). The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm, especially in Mathura, Krishna’s birthplace, and in Vrindavan, where he spent his early years.

A key aspect of Janmashtami is the fasting tradition, seen as a means to purify both body and mind. The specifics of fasting can vary based on regional practices and personal beliefs, but all forms are rooted in devotion and reverence.

Types of Fasts

Devotees generally observe one of two primary types of fasts on Janmashtami:

Nirjala Fast: This is the most stringent form, where participants abstain from both food and water for the entire day. The fast is traditionally broken at midnight, believed to be the time of Krishna’s birth, after performing prayers and aarti.

Phalahar Fast: For those who find the Nirjala fast too challenging, the Phalahar fast allows for the consumption of fruits, milk, and water. Devotees following this fast avoid grains, legumes, and certain vegetables like onions and garlic, adhering instead to a Sattvic (pure) diet.

Dietary Restrictions

During Janmashtami fasting, specific foods are generally avoided. Devotees refrain from eating grains, pulses, rice, and regular salt. Instead, they opt for non-cereal alternatives such as buckwheat flour (kuttu ka atta), amaranth flour (rajgira ka atta), and water chestnut flour (singhare ka atta). Rock salt (sendha namak) is used in place of regular salt.

Permissible Foods

Fresh fruits like bananas, apples, and pomegranates

Dairy products including milk, yogurt, paneer, and butter

Root vegetables such as potatoes and sweet potatoes, often featured in vrat (fasting) dishes

Nuts and seeds, which provide energy and nutrients during the fast

Rituals and Breaking the Fast

Fasting on Janmashtami is accompanied by prayers, bhajans, and recitations of the Bhagavad Gita or Krishna Leela. Many devotees visit temples, where the birth of Krishna is celebrated with great devotion.

The fast is traditionally concluded at midnight, symbolizing Krishna’s birth. This ritual involves offering prepared food to Krishna and then partaking in the Prasad. Devotees believe that observing the fast and performing these rituals with sincerity brings them closer to Lord Krishna, seeking his blessings for prosperity and spiritual growth.

The German Dirndl Oktoberfest Dress

A traditional dirndl typically consists of three essential components:

Bodice: The top part of the dirndl dress, the bodice, is designed to accentuate the wearer’s waist. It often features a snug fit and intricate embroidery, adding a touch of Bavarian charm to the outfit.

Blouse: Beneath the bodice, you’ll find a white, puff-sleeved blouse. The blouse is a symbol of purity and complements the intricate details of the femal outfit beautifully.

Skirt: The skirt, usually made from high-quality materials like cotton or silk, flows gracefully down to the ankles. It features various patterns and colors, making it a key element in defining the dirndl’s uniqueness.

Plus Size Oktoberfest Outfits

Oktoberfest welcomes attendees of all shapes and sizes, and the traditional dress for women is no exception. Many brands and stores offer plus-size dirndl dresses, ensuring that every woman can enjoy the festival in style and comfort.

Festival Outfit is a Vibe

Your dirndl isn’t just an outfit; it’s a piece of history, a symbol of Bavarian culture, and a celebration of femininity.

Tip: Always consult the sizing chart before your purchase. It prevents sizing issues in the future.

Lederhosen: The Male Equivalent

While these long dresses are the highlight of female Oktoberfest attire, let’s not forget the male counterpart, lederhosen. Lederhosen are traditional Bavarian shorts for men, crafted from leather. Together, dirndls and lederhosen add to the vibrant and diverse charm of Oktoberfest.

The MHA urged the states to ensure a peaceful celebration of the holiday and keep an eye out for anything that might jeopardise social cohesion. “In advance of Hanuman Jayanti, MHA has given a warning to all states. The Home Minister’s Office issued a statement encouraging the governments to maintain law and order, observe the holiday in peace, and keep an eye out for anything that might jeopardise social harmony.

The development comes on the heels of protests that erupted in West Bengal and neighbouring Bihar during Ram Navami celebrations. Incidents of violence, arson, and stone-pelting were reported in these two states around Ram Navami.

Following the confrontations, Section 144 prohibition orders were also put into effect in some parts of West Bengal.

The Calcutta High Court’s acting Chief Justice Bench had also directed the deployment of central force troops in a few sensitive regions of the state prior to Hanuman Jayanti.
In order to preserve law and order, the court instructed the state to ask paramilitary forces for help.

The frigid month of January is when the Punjabi celebration of Lohri takes place. Several Indian states celebrate it. It also has a fascinating past that not many people are aware of.
The history of Dulla Bhatti, a legendary Punjabi hero who led a rebellion against the Mughal emperor Akbar, is thought to be the basis for the event. As a result of his heroic deeds, he rose to hero status among the Punjabi people, and nearly every Lohri song bears praise for him.

This celebration represents the ripening of winter crops as well as the beginning of a new harvesting season. Lohri is all about good food, family, and friends, as well as traditional folk songs and dance.
Every year on January 13, Lohri is celebrated. It denotes the end of the winter season. According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Lohri features the longest night before winter followed by the shortest day of the year known as Magh.

Lohri and sugarcane goods go together. If you are celebrating Lohri, you will consume Gur (jaggery) and gajjak. Radish, spinach, and mustard leaves (Sarson da saag) are other crucial additions to the menu and have been a delicacy since ancient times. Add Makki di roti and you have a feast to remember. In addition to these foods, you can have peanuts and til rice, which are made of sesame seeds, rice, and jaggery.
Lohri is a festival that honours fertility and the joy of living. While harvested fields and farms are lit up with bonfires throughout the towns, there is much more to it. People have been wandering around collecting branches for the traditional bonfire since the frigid winter morning.

The youngsters are also involved! They walk door to door asking for “Lohri Loot” and are given money in exchange for dry fruits, til (sesame seeds), jaggery, peanuts, gajjak, or rewari. As part of the ritual, the interiors of the residences are sprinkled with water.

People assemble in the evening for ‘Parikrama,’ and they toss snacks such as popcorn, puffed rice, and rewari onto a bonfire. Sugarcanes are also burned as an offering in the bonfire. This fills the room with the aroma of burning sugar.
Aside from that, they pray to the fire, “Aadar aye dilather jaye,” which means “May honour come and poverty leave,” for the fertility of the land and abundant crops. They then celebrate by dancing and singing folk music.

Everyone dresses up for the occasion and exchanges sweets with one another. In addition, this is a lucky holiday for weddings and newborns. While newlyweds wear jewellery, babies perform a ritual where they hold a comb.
Lohri is a festival of unity and the bonds people form with friends and family. The party begins with the addition of a campfire. Have a Happy and Prosperous day this Lohri!

In the world, there are many strange conventions you might have never heard. Many unheard events and festivals take place around the country as conventions are a big business and for many, an even bigger social event. Here is the list of what just might be the world’s strangest conventions. How many have you heard of?

World Toilet Summit & Expo

World Toilet Summit & Expo have you heard of this shittiest convention ever? You can laugh as much as you want to but their objectives are quite altruistic. It was first started in 2001 in Singapore by the World Toilet Organization to bring sanitation and clean water to the 2.5 billion people around the world who still need it. After 2001 it traveled to various cities like Beijing, Belfast, India, Moscow, Seoul, Shanghai, Taiwan, and Macau.

Twins Days Festival

Twins Days Festival started in 1976 in Twinsburg, Ohio and every year it is held on the first weekend of August. Meanwhile, the festival is attended by 3000 people every year. The festival is attended by a range of people from newborns to octogenarians and most of them twins. Meanwhile, most of them come along with their families.

International UFO Congress Convention

Sounds interesting right? International UFO Congress Convention is a week-long event which is usually held in Laughlin, Nevada, since 1991. At the convention, there are over 30 speakers. People look forward to going to the convention which helps them to build their networking with researchers while reconnecting with friends. In the convention UFO sightings, UFO crashes, crop circles, paranormal experiences, and government conspiracy topics are being covered.

ScareFest Horror and Paranormal Convention

In November the Scare Fest and Paranormal Convention are organized in the United States of America for three days. The convention is hosted by Ghost Chasers International, Inc. at the Lexington Center in Lexington, Kentucky. The ScareFest Horror and Paranormal Convention were created by Jeff Waldridge, Patti, and Chuck Starr.

Sexpo

The Sexpo convention sounds a little weird but this is organized for adult entertainment and lifestyles. Sexpo is held in Australia and sells products related to sex and sexuality while educating about safe practices. Day by Day the festival has broadened and many incorporate companies of different fields like aviation, wine tasting, marine sports, spa pools, hair and make-up artists, physical fitness equipment, and many others participate in the event.
