</excerpt>

Rakhi or Rakshabandhan is a festival that symbolizes the sacred bond between brothers and sisters. It brings families together, often for small gatherings where sisters pray for the well-being of their brothers, and brothers promise to protect their sisters throughout their lives. This tradition has deep roots in ancient scriptures, with several anecdotes highlighting its significance.

One of the most famous stories associated with Rakhi is that of Lord Krishna and Draupadi. After Lord Krishna injured His finger during a battle, Draupadi, in a gesture of love and care, tore a piece of her saree and wrapped it around His finger to stop the bleeding. Moved by her devotion, Krishna promised to protect her whenever she needed help. This promise was fulfilled when Draupadi was being disrobed in the royal court by Dushshasan. Krishna miraculously extended her saree, saving her honor, a gesture symbolizing the eternal protection that a brother promises his sister during Rakshabandhan.

Another story tells of Goddess Laxmi and Bali Maharaj. When Lord Vishnu became the gatekeeper of His devotee Bali Maharaj, Laxmi Devi, in the form of a Brahmin woman, tied a Rakhi on Bali’s wrist. Touched by her gesture, Bali granted her a boon, and she asked for her husband back. This story also highlights the bond of protection and love symbolized by Rakhi.

Yamuna and Yamraj share another tale of this bond. When Yamraj visited his sister Yamuna after many years, she tied a Rakhi on his wrist and served him with great devotion. Yamraj, deeply moved by her love, granted her immortality, making their bond eternal.

Interestingly, Rakshabandhan also coincides with the appearance day of Lord Balaram, the elder brother of Lord Krishna, on the full moon (Purnima) day of the Shravan month. Balaram is revered for his extraordinary strength, both physical and spiritual. He is known as “Dauji” and is deeply cherished by Lord Krishna. Balaram’s stories, including his victories over demons like Dhenukasura and Pralambasura, illustrate his role as the eternal companion and protector of Krishna.

Lord Balaram’s presence and strength are invoked for spiritual guidance and the strength to serve with devotion. Though Rakshabandhan might seem like a small festival, its significance is immense, rooted in love, protection, and the divine relationships celebrated through these timeless stories.

</excerpt>

Rakshabandhan, also known as Rakhi, is a cherished festival that celebrates the unique and enduring bond between brothers and sisters. Rooted in Indian culture and tradition, this festival is a testament to the love, protection, and mutual respect that defines the sibling relationship. As families across the country come together to celebrate Rakshabandhan, it is a time to reflect on the deeper significance of this bond and how it has evolved over time.

The Essence of Rakshabandhan

Rakshabandhan is traditionally marked by the sister tying a sacred thread, or rakhi, on her brother’s wrist. This thread symbolizes her love and prayers for his well-being, while the brother, in turn, vows to protect and care for her throughout his life. The word “Rakshabandhan” itself translates to the “bond of protection,” encapsulating the festival’s core values.

This ritual, though simple, carries profound meaning. It is not merely a custom but a reaffirmation of the bond that siblings share. The rakhi, as a symbol, represents the invisible thread of love, trust, and commitment that binds brothers and sisters, transcending the boundaries of time and distance.

The Modern Interpretation

In today’s world, where families are often spread across different cities or even countries, Rakshabandhan has adapted to the changing dynamics of sibling relationships. The essence of the festival, however, remains unchanged. Sisters and brothers who are unable to meet in person on Rakshabandhan find ways to celebrate the occasion, whether by sending rakhis and gifts through the mail or connecting via video calls. Technology has allowed siblings to stay connected, ensuring that the spirit of Rakshabandhan is maintained, no matter where they are.

Moreover, the traditional roles of protection have evolved. Today, Rakshabandhan is not just about brothers promising to protect their sisters; it’s about mutual care and support. Sisters also pledge to stand by their brothers, offering emotional support, guidance, and love. This shift reflects the changing nature of gender roles and relationships in modern society, where siblings see each other as equals and partners in life’s journey.

The Emotional Significance

Beyond the rituals and customs, Rakshabandhan is a deeply emotional festival. It is a day when siblings reminisce about their shared childhood, the laughter, the quarrels, the secrets, and the unspoken understanding that they have built over the years. It is a time to express gratitude for each other’s presence in their lives, to acknowledge the silent support that has often gone unnoticed.

For many, Rakshabandhan also serves as a reminder of the importance of family bonds in a fast-paced world. As life becomes increasingly hectic, with work and personal commitments taking precedence, Rakshabandhan offers an opportunity to pause and reconnect with those who have been with us from the beginning.

Rakshabandhan across Cultures

While Rakshabandhan is predominantly celebrated in India,
the festival has found resonance in various cultures across the world, particularly among the Indian diaspora. In countries like Nepal, Mauritius, and parts of the Caribbean, Rakshabandhan is celebrated with the same fervor and enthusiasm. The festival’s universal appeal lies in its core message of love and protection, values that transcend cultural and geographical boundaries.

Rakshabandhan is more than just a festival; it is a celebration of the unique bond between brothers and sisters, a bond that is marked by love, care, and lifelong commitment. As siblings come together to celebrate this occasion, whether in person or virtually, they are reminded of the enduring connection that they share. In a world that is constantly changing, the bond between siblings remains one of the few constants, offering a source of comfort, strength, and joy.

As we celebrate Rakshabandhan this year, let us cherish the memories, embrace the present, and look forward to many more years of this beautiful tradition. Whether near or far, the bond between siblings is unbreakable, and Rakshabandhan is a perfect reminder of this timeless truth.

</excerpt>

In today’s digital age, booking travel online seems like the easiest and most convenient option. However, studies have shown that Gen Z and millennials primarily prefer to use OTAs (online travel agents) for their travel needs, whereas Baby Boomers typically rely on traditional local travel agents. This highlights a generational divide in travel booking preferences.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced a significant shift in these patterns. Many travellers, including younger generations, are increasingly turning to local travel agents. This change is driven by the challenges faced with cancellations and rebooking through OTAs during the pandemic.

Travel agents can help you save money: Although people traditionally prioritized OTAs for deals, the recent trend underscores that local travel agents can offer competitive pricing. They may secure bundled packages or leverage their connections to find good deals, providing a compelling alternative to online booking platforms.

Insider Knowledge and Expertise

Travel agents are industry insiders with extensive knowledge and connections. They are often the first to know about new travel trends, deals, and changes before they even hit the internet booking portals. This insider access allows them to craft unique and cost-effective travel experiences tailored to your preferences.
Moreover, travel agents deeply understand the nuances of different destinations, hotels, airlines, and travel providers. Their expertise ensures you avoid potential pitfalls and make the most of your vacation time and budget.

Personalized Service and Support

Online booking engines are transactional – you input your dates and destination, and it spits out options based on an algorithm. A good travel agent takes the time to truly understand your travel style, interests, and budget. They then leverage their knowledge and connections to craft a customized itinerary that matches your needs perfectly.
Additionally, travel agents provide invaluable support throughout your journey. If any issues arise with flights, hotels, or activities, they can quickly resolve them for you, saving you from the headache and hassle. This personalized service and advocacy is something no online portal can match.

Exclusive Deals and Amenities

Due to their close relationships with travel suppliers, travel agents often have access to exclusive deals, upgrades, and amenities that you simply can’t find online. This could include free breakfast, spa credits, room upgrades, special tour packages and more.
These value-added perks can significantly enhance your travel experience while also saving you money compared to booking everything a la carte yourself online.

Safety and Security

In today’s world, having a trusted travel professional in your corner provides an extra layer of security and assistance, especially when traveling to remote or unfamiliar destinations. Your agent can provide vital advice, local contacts, and make sure you have support available in case any issues or emergencies arise during your travels.

Saving You Time and Hassle

For many, the biggest benefit of using a travel agent is the time and hassle it saves. Rather than spending hours scouring the internet and cross-checking review sites, an experienced agent can quickly plan an amazing trip aligned with your interests and budget.

From finding the ideal hotels and flights to recommending must-see activities and restaurants, a travel agent handles all the tedious details, so you can simply enjoy the journey. In the era of automation, there is still immense value in leveraging the expertise and personal touch of a seasoned travel professional.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday conducted raids at 50 places in connection with the singer Sidhu Moosewala murder case. NIA teams have reached several locations in Delhi, NCR, Haryana, and Punjab. NIA has inputs that Sidhu Moosewala’s murder is linked to terror groups.

In this case, the NIA has prepared a list of people associated with Neeraj Bawana, Lawrence Bishnoi, and the Tajpuria gang. The agency says that some gangsters are also operating from jails.

Among them, raids were conducted at gangster Lawrence’s house located in Dutranwali village in Fazilka, Goldie Brar’s house in Muktsar Sahib, and Lalit Patial from Chandigarh.

Gangster Vinay Deoda’s house in Kotkapura, a factory and gangster Shubham’s house in Amritsar have been raided. The house of gangster Ravi Rajgarh has been raided in Ludhiana.

All gangsters are suspected to have connection with terrorists.

The Union Home Ministry suspects that all these gangsters have links with terrorists. Weapons are being provided to them from Pakistan. Apart from this, it is also suspected that at the behest of terrorists, they can spoil the atmosphere in the country and target killing in India. The government has put these organizations on the list of terrorists.

Moosewala was murdered in May, charge sheet was filed against 24 murderers. In the first FIR, gangsters of the Lawrence gang were named in which gang chief Lawrence, Canada-based gangster Goldie Brar, Bikram Brar, Kala Jathedi, Jasdeep Singh alias Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, Sachin Thapan, Lawrence’s brother Anmol, and Lakhbir Singh Landa are included. Apart from the jail, these gangs are running operations from Canada, Dubai, and Pakistan.

Moosewala was murdered on 29 May in Mansa. In this case, the police have presented a charge sheet against 24 murderers in the Mansa court. It also has details of the shooters Mannu and Roopa killed in the encounter. In this, the gangsters sitting abroad now including Goldie Brar and Lipin Nehra are also charged under Red Corner Notice. At the same time, 166 witnesses have been made in this charge sheet. After Mundi’s arrest, the police will soon present a supplementary challan.

The killing of Moosewala mainly involved 6 shooters, known to have two modules named Corolla and Bolero modules. Out of these, after Bolero module leader shooter Priyavart Fauji, Ankit Sersa, and Kashish alias Kuldeep, the police also caught Deepak Mundi. On the other hand, the shooters of the Corolla module, Jagroop Roopa and Manpreet Mannu, were killed by the Punjab Police in an encounter at Bhakna village near Attari, Amritsar.

Moosewala’s killer was about to flee to Dubai: Mundi was caught in Darjeeling along with 2 accomplices.

Deepak Mundi, the sixth shooter who shot dead Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, and his two accomplices were arrested from the BOP water tank of Khari Baori in Darjeeling on Saturday. Mundi was preparing to cross the Nepal border with his two companions Kapil Pandit and Rajendra Joker as told by Punjab Police senior officials.

</excerpt>

A Varanasi Court on Monday dismissed a plea of Anjuman Islamia Masjid committee challenging the maintainability of the suit filed by five Hindu women seeking worshipping rights in the Gyanvapi mosque compound.

District Judge A.K. Vishvesh delivered the verdict in the Gyanvapi Shrinagar Gauri dispute case and posted the matter to further hearing on 22 September.

“The court rejected the Muslim side’s petition and said the suit is maintainable. The next hearing of the case is on 22 September,” said Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, representing the Hindu side in the Gyanvapi mosque case. However, Merajuddin Siddiqui, the advocate representing the Muslim side, said that they will move the Allahabad High Court against the judgement.

The petition was filed by five women seeking permission for daily worship of Hindu deities whose idols are said to be located on an outer wall of the Gyanvapi mosque, which is located close to Kashi Vishwanath temple here.

In the presence of restricted 32 persons inside the courtroom, the district judge delivered his 26-page order. In the order, the judge said, “In view of the discussions and analysis, I have come to the conclusion that the suit of the plaintiffs is not barred by the Places of Worship (Special Provision) Act, 1991, The Waqf Act, 1995 and UP Sri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Act, 1983, and the application 35C filed by the defendant no. 4 (Anjuman Intezamia) is liable to be dismissed.”

The order also said, “Religious character of the entire property in suit has already been declared by U.P. State Legislature and there is no question of applicability of provisions of the Act.”

Their challenge of the Muslim side was rejected on all three counts they had cited. The most important of these is the 1991 law that freezes the status of a place of worship as it existed on August 15, 1947. The petitioners don’t want ownership, just the right to worship, the court said.

After five women filing the petition for prayer and worship, the local Varanasi court ordered a videography survey of the mosque complex in May. The survey work was completed on 16 May and the report was presented in the court on 19 May. After the videography survey claims were made by the Hindu side that a structure, resembling a Shivling was found in the mosque complex but the Masjid committee contested that it was a fountain and not a Shivling.

“Several sculptures of gods and goddesses along with other structures related to Hindu belief were seen in the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi,” said advocate Ajay Kumar Mishra, who was appointed commissioner by Varanasi court to survey the Gyanvapi-Gauri Shringar complex but was later removed for leaking the information.

The report by Mishra also mentioned that the three-four sculptures with Sindoor marks and ‘Choukhat’ like stone slab are believed to be ‘Sringar Gouri’.

However, the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee has said the Gyanvapi mosque is a Waqf property and has questioned the maintainability of the plea. Madan Mohan Yadav, a lawyer of the Hindu side, had claimed that the mosque was constructed after demolishing the temple.

According to the petitioners, a Jyotirling of Lord Vishwanath in Kashi is in the mosque complex. The petitioner also claimed that in 1669, Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb had destroyed a portion of the Kashi Vishwanath temple and had built the Gyanvapi Mosque.

The petitioner wants the court to declare that Muslims have no right to occupy the Gyanvapi mosque and their entry to be banned. Meanwhile, the defence lawyer said that there was no temple in the Gyanvapi complex and the mosque is standing on the site from the beginning.

Notably, the Supreme Court on 21 July said that it will await the Varanasi district judge’s decision on the Gyanvapi mosque committee’s application. The SC bench then posted the matter for further hearing in the first week of October after the outcome of the proceedings before the district judge.

The Supreme Court on May 20 transferred the case from a civil judge (senior division) to a district judge, saying considering the “complexities and sensitivity” of the issue, it is better if a senior judicial officer having an experience of over 25-30 years handles this case.

The bench also said that no manner of restriction should be imposed on Muslims entering the mosque to offer namaz or religious observances. The top court had made the observation that the process to ascertain the religious character of a place of worship is not barred under the Places of Worship Act of 1991.

SC judgement came after the commission appointed by a district court to conduct a video surgery of the Gyanvapi Mosque complex submitted its report on May 19.

The top court had ordered that its interim order passed on May 17 — to protect the area where the Shivling was found and access to Muslims for namaz — shall continue in operation till the maintainability of the suit is decided and thereafter for eight weeks to enable parties to pursue legal remedies.

It had said that District Judge should decide the maintainability of the civil suit in the Gyanvapi-Kashi Vishwanath on priority as sought by Committee of Management Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Varanasi.

The matter had reached the Supreme Court on a petition filed by the Mosque Management Committee, which challenged the civil judge’s order of filming inside the mosque.

The order permitted inspection, survey, and videography of the mosque’s complex to collect evidence about the alleged existence of idols of Hindu deities inside the mosque, which is adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

The petitioners said the filming goes against the Places of Worship Act of 1991, which maintains the religious status of any place of worship as of August 15, 1947.

However, after the survey, the lawyers representing the Hindu side claimed that a shivling was found at the mosque premises.

They filed an application for the protection of the shivling, whereupon the civil judge directed the district magistrate, Varanasi, to seal the area where the shivling was sighted. It also directed the deployment of the CRPF to protect the sealed area and prohibited people from entering it.

It took over 16 hours and eight counting machines for the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials to count the heap of cash that was recovered from the residence of a businessman in Kolkata on Saturday. The businessman, Aamir Khan, launched a mobile gaming application namely E-Nuggets, which was designed for the purpose of defrauding the public, the ED said. The raids were conducted under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

ED officials recovered over Rs 17 crore from the Garden Reach residence of businessman Aamir Khan. The central agency found 10 trunks on the spot. However, the cash was found in 5 trunks at Khan’s residence.

The search on Saturday morning and the counting of cash continued till late at night. The ED search team was accompanied by bank officials and central forces.Sources said the stacks of notes were mostly in the denomination of Rs 500. However, currency notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 200 were also there.

The case was registered on the basis of the First Information Report (FIR) on February 15 last year at Park Street Police Station in Kolkata against Aamir Khan and others based on a complaint filed by Federal Bank authorities, in the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Calcutta.

During the initial period, the agency said, the users were rewarded with the commission and the balance in the wallet could be withdrawn hassle-free.“This provided initial confidence among users and they started investing bigger amounts for a greater percentage of commission and a greater number of purchase orders,” the probe agency said.

It said after collecting a handsome amount from the public, all of a sudden, the withdrawal from the app was stopped, at one or the other pretext such as system upgradation etc. “Thereafter, all data including profile information was wiped off from the app servers and only then the users understood the ploy.”

Earlier on Saturday, the central agency had carried out search operations at six locations in Kolkata with respect to an investigation relating to the mobile gaming application. During the search operation, the ED said, it was noticed that the entities linked to the case were using dummy accounts.

The war between Russia and Ukraine appears to be entering a new phase after Kyiv dealt a big blow to Moscow’s grip on parts of the east with a fast-moving offensive that saw Ukrainian troops enter the strategic city of Izium after six months of occupation.

When Ukrainian forces entered the city of Izium on Saturday, it was more than a significant military victory. It was a sign that the Russian troops are scrambling to hold onto the territory they captured over the past six months, reported CNN. Russian forces were forced to evacuate the strategic eastern city just five days after Ukrainian forces began a new offensive eastward through the Kharkiv region.

“Russians escaped and left weapons and ammo behind. The city centre is free,” a spokesperson for the Bohun Brigade of the Land Forces of Ukraine said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

Ukrainian forces have liberated the settlement of Chkalovske in the Kharkiv region of Russian troops, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Telegram on Sunday.“Another freed settlement! Thanks to the 14th separate mechanized brigade named after Prince Roman the Great, the Ukrainian flag returned to Chkalovske, Kharkiv region,” Zelenskyy said.

In his daily video message late on Friday, Zelenskyy said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine had liberated and taken control of more than 30 settlements in the Kharkiv region.

The last five days have seen the most ambitious ground assaults by the Ukrainians since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in late February.“Weapons, weapons, weapons have been on our agenda since spring. I am grateful to partners who have answered our call: Ukraine’s battlefield successes are our shared ones. Three agenda items now are schedule, schedule, and schedule. Prompt supplies bring victory and peace closer,” tweeted Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Video and satellite images geolocated by CNN show the advances have involved sustained attacks on command posts, ammunition stores, and fuel reserves far behind the front lines.

A senior US official said Ukrainian forces had achieved some success in attacking Russian supply lines, with the intention of cutting off and isolating Russian troops west of the Dnipro River.

Saturday’s rapid advance did not end with Izium, as Ukraine appeared to have opened a new front against Russian defences on the border of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, reported CNN.

Ukrainian forces continue to make “significant gains” in the Kharkiv region, the United Kingdom’s defence ministry tweeted Sunday.

It said that while Russia has “likely withdrawn units from the area,” fighting continues “around the strategically important cities of Kupiansk and Izium.”

The head of the regional military administration for Luhansk, Serhiy Hayday, indicated the city of Lysychansk was the target of the new offensive.Lysychansk was the last city in the Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine to fall under Russian control in July, after weeks of intense fighting. Hayday told CNN on Saturday “the occupiers, including both the collaborators and the military, are running away in a hurry.”

“Locals have videos and photos proving that,” Hayday said. He said the visual evidence could not be shared for security reasons.

Oleksiy Reznikov, the Ukrainian defence minister, said that Ukraine’s allies are “amazed” by the recent successes of the country’s military. Speaking at the end of a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Reznikov said Ukraine’s “partners were positively amazed by the dynamics of our troops’ activities” in the south and east of the country.

Meanwhile, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been shut down after it was reconnected to the power grid, Ukraine’s nuclear energy agency said Sunday.

</excerpt>

Marking the beginning of his new political innings in Kashmir, former Congress veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday said that Article 370, revoked by the Union government three years ago, cannot be restored.

“Ghulam Nabi Azad will not mislead anyone for votes, I will not mislead and exploit you. Please don’t rake up issues which can’t be achieved. Art 370 can’t be restored. It needs two-thirds majority in parliament,” said Azad in his first public meeting in Kashmir after breaking away from his five-decade-long association with Congress.

Azad was addressing a rally here where he also said that they will launch a new party in ten days. “My party will focus on the restoration of full statehood, right to land, and employment to native domicile.”

Azad added, “I’ve not decided upon a name for my party yet. The people of J-K will decide the name and the flag for the party. I’ll give a Hindustani name to my party that everyone can understand.” he said

Azad said that the first unit of his political outfit would be formed in Jammu and Kashmir in view of impending assembly polls.

He once again lashed out at Congress and said that people are trying to defame us (me and my supporters who left the party) but their reach is limited to computer tweets.Criticising the party, Azad said, “Congress was made by us by our blood, not by computers, not by Twitter. People are trying to defame us but their reach is limited to computers and tweets. That is the reason Congress is nowhere to be seen on the ground.”

“I thank everyone who supported me through their resignations, WhatsApp messages and other mediums from across the country since I resigned from the party. I have served the Congress party holding every position for last 53 years, but never received this much of love even when I am not on any position,” Azad said.

Taking a jibe at Congress, Azad said that people from Congress now go to jail in buses, call DGP or Commissioners, get their names written, and leave within an hour. This is the reason Congress has been unable to grow.

Azad resigned from the all-party post last week. Notably, he has been Chief Minister of J-K from 2005 to 2008.

In his resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi, he had targeted party leadership, particularly Rahul Gandhi, over the way the party has been run in the past nearly nine years. In the hard-hitting five-page letter, Azad had claimed that a coterie runs the party while Sonia Gandhi was just “a nominal head” and all the major decisions were taken by “Rahul Gandhi or rather worse his security guards and PAs”.

Azad had said he was submitting his resignation with “great regret and an extremely leaden heart” and severing his 50-year association with the Congress. He was earlier Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha.

Recounting his long association with the Congress, Azad had said the situation in the party has reached a point of “no return.”

While Azad took potshots at Sonia Gandhi in the letter, his sharpest attack was on Rahul Gandhi and he described the Wayand MP as a “non-serious individual” and “immature”.

Akali Dal chief and ex-Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday said that the Sutlej–Yamuna Link Canal could be built over his dead body only. Giving an incendiary twist to the decades old dispute between Punjab and Haryana, he further stated that he would “ensure that not a drop of water flows through SYL canal”.

Taking to Twitter Badal said, “The #SYLCanal can be built only on my dead body. As the chief servant of @Akali_Dal_, the army which has led the fight for Punjab’s interests from the front, I am honour bound to ensure that not a drop of water flows through SYL canal.” In a string of tweets on Friday, Badal said that he can die but cannot watch Punjab turn into a desert and riparian rights were paramount and everything else was irrelevant.

“We cannot just stand there and watch as Punjab turns into a desert and its children watching their river waters carried to other states right in front of their eyes. I have a legacy of martyrdom to live up and no matter what my critics say, I am ready to die for it,” Badal said in another tweet. He further stressed in yet another tweet, “The first thing to decide here is the Riparian rights of states. Everything else is irrelevant.”

Badal’s inflammatory statement comes two days after AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday exhorted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to find a solution to the SYL dispute. “I appeal to the prime minster to ensure arrangement of adequate water for both Punjab and Haryana. If he does not have the solution, then call me for a tea and I will give the solution,” Kejriwal had said after launching AAP’s “Make India No. 1” campaign in Hisar in Haryana, his home state.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann was also present in the programme, who had said that he would sure join his Haryana counterpart when the Centre calls a meeting between the two chief ministers to discuss the issue as directed by the Supreme Court.

Badal said that Mann should not attend the meeting with Haryana.

With the Supreme Court keen on getting the dispute amicably settled between the two states with the Centre playing an interlocutor, the issue has once again become a boiling pot with every political party joining the slugfest. The ruling AAP has also joined the chorus against the SYL canal project.

Joining anti-SYL chorus with Badal, senior Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa said that the riparian state has a constitutional right on the water. Bajwa cautioned Mann against taking sensitive matters related to the state lightly as it is a question of the life of Punjabis. “The claim by the Central government in the Supreme Court that Punjab is not cooperating with Haryana over the SYL canal dispute should not be misunderstood as the Punjab government being not serious about it,” Bajwa said.

Bajwa further stated that SYL, transfer of Chandigarh and Punjabi-speaking areas and adequate representation in Bhakra Beas Management Board are long-pending issues that should be resolved on a priority basis.

His party colleague and Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said that Punjab has entered into a legal battle of “live or die” with Haryana over the issue. “It is a matter of life and death for the farmers of the state, especially the Malwa region, to which Mann himself belongs and the chief minister was enjoying the hospitality of the people of Haryana,” Raja Warring said.

After the demise of Queen Elizabeth II, Charles III addressed the nation for the first time as king and vowed ‘lifelong service’ to the people.

“Queen Elizabeth was a life well lived; a promise with destiny kept and she is mourned most deeply in her passing. That promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today,” King Charles said. Recalling Queen Elizabeth’s commitment, which she made in 1947, King Charles III said that it defined her whole life.“Alongside the personal grief that all my family are feeling, we also share with so many of you in the United Kingdom, in all the countries where The Queen was Head of State, in the Commonwealth and across the world, a deep sense of gratitude for the more than 70 years in which my Mother, as Queen, served the people of so many nations,” he said.

“In 1947, on her 21st birthday, she pledged in a broadcast from Cape Town to the Commonwealth to devote her life, whether short or long, to the service of her people,” he added.

The king pledges to uphold her values and said that he will endeavour to serve the people with loyalty, respect and love.

“As the Queen herself did with such unswerving devotion, I too now solemnly pledge myself throughout the remaining time God grants me, to uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of our nation,” King said.

“Wherever you may live in the United Kingdom or in the realms and territories across the world and whatever may be your background and beliefs I shall endeavour to serve you with loyalty, respect and love, as I have throughout my life,” he added.

King Charles III received a warm reception when he arrived at Buckingham Palace. The King was offered bouquets of flowers and even a kiss on the cheek as he shook hands with those who had gathered to see him arrive.People have been leaving flowers and tributes outside palaces and churches as the UK marks the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The King’s plane landed at RAF Northolt in west London just after 13:30 BST, reported UK-based media.

The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral Castle on Thursday afternoon at the age of 96.

King Charles III acceded to the throne immediately following the death of Elizabeth II on Thursday. He described losing his mother as “a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family”.

During this period of mourning, he said he and his family would be “comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held”.

He has been preparing to be King for his entire life and has chosen to use his Christian name for his title as monarch, just like his late beloved mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The formal process of proclaiming him King will be carried out by the Accession Council – a group made up of Privy Counsellors, Great Officers of State, the Lord Mayor of London, Realm High Commissioners and senior civil servants.

India and China have agreed to dismantle and verify the temporary structures and other allied infrastructure created in the Gogra-Hot Springs (PP-15) area of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.

This comes a day after Indian and Chinese troops in the Gogra-Hot Springs area started to disengage in a coordinated and planned way.

In response to a media query, MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the disengagement process in the area will be completed by 12 September. This disengagement process follows the sixteenth round of talks between the Corps Commanders of India and China that was held at Chushul Moldo Meeting Point on 17 July 2022.

Since then, the two sides had maintained regular contact to build on the progress achieved during the talks to resolve the relevant issues along the LAC in the Western Sector of the India-China border areas.

“As a result, both sides have now agreed on disengagement in the area of Gogra-Hot Springs (PP-15). As per the agreement, the disengagement process in this area started on 8 September at 0830 hrs and will be completed by 12 September 2022,” Bagchi said.

In the media response, the MEA spokesperson continued that the two sides have agreed to cease forward deployments in this area in a phased, coordinated and verified manner, resulting in the return of the troops of both sides to their respective areas.

“It has been agreed that all temporary structures and other allied infrastructure created in the area by both sides will be dismantled and mutually verified,” Bagchi said and added that “the landforms in the area will be restored to the pre-stand-off period by both sides.”

The agreement ensures that the LAC in this area will be strictly observed and respected by both sides and that there will be no unilateral change in status quo.“With the resolution of the stand-off at PP-15, both sides mutually agreed to take the talks forward and resolve the remaining issues along LAC and restore peace and tranquillity in India-China border areas,” he said.

Last month, the Indian and Chinese armies held a Division Commander-level meeting where they discussed matters pertaining to maintaining peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control in the Ladakh sector.

Earlier, India and China held talks in the Chushul sector to address the air space violations by the Chinese Air Force where India warned the Chinese against any misadventure.

Delivering a strong message to China, India and Japan on Thursday reaffirmed their commitment to a rule-based global order that respects sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations. Delhi and Tokyo also said that there should be no attempt on the part of any country to unilaterally change the status quo. The two countries also highlighted their commitment to a common strategic goal of achieving a free and open Indo-Pacific, that is inclusive and resilient based on the rule of law and free from coercion.

This was said a joint statement, released by the Ministry of External Affairs, after the second India-Japan 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial Meeting. The meeting was held in Tokyo.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held talks with Japan’s Defence Minister Hamada Yasukazu and Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa. Sources told The Daily Guardian that the 2+2 ministerial meeting elaborately discussed China’s aggressive behaviour in the Indo-Pacific and other maritime spheres. The ministers of both countries discussed ways to deal with the Chinese agenda.

India and Japan also agreed to enhance military exercises and defence cooperation, amidst China’s belligerence in the Indo-Pacific. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met his Japanese counterpart Yasukazu Hamada in Tokyo on the first day of his official visit to Japan and agreed to hold military drills aimed at boosting co-ordination between the air forces of the two nations.

Noting that India and Japan pursue a Special Strategic and Global Partnership, Singh said India’s defence partnership with Japan will play a crucial role in ensuring a free, open and rules-based Indo Pacific region. India, the US and several other world powers have been talking about the need to ensure a free, open and thriving Indo-Pacific in the backdrop of China’s rising military manoeuvring in the region.

China claims nearly all of the disputed South China Sea. Beijing has built artificial islands and military installations in the South China Sea. In what is being viewed as a significant development, the Indian and Japanese ministers agreed to hold the first jet fighter exercise at an early date. According to the joint statement, the ministers had a frank and fruitful discussion on a host of issues, particularly those in the Indo-Pacific as well as Ukraine. The ministers admitted that the need for global cooperation had become more acute due to the security challenges.

Reaffirming their commitment to a rules-based global order that respects sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations, the ministerial quartet also called for peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law without resorting to threat or use of force of any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo.

Sources said that the Japanese foreign minister Hayashi categorically said during the meeting that unilateral attempts to change the status quo with force are continuing in the East and the South China Seas, let alone Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. India reaffirmed its stand that the problem between Ukraine and Russia should be resolved through diplomacy and there should be an immediate end to violence. However, Japan continued to stick to its stand, critical of Russia’s action against Ukraine. Tokyo has taken a strong position against Russia and has joined the West in imposing economic sanctions against Moscow. New Delhi has refrained from criticizing Russia for its military operation against Ukraine.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a grand statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose near India Gate here on Thursday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lambasted the Union government for not being “invited properly”. A fuming Mamata said, “I received a letter from an undersecretary stating PM will inaugurate the statue at 7 pm…you be there by 6 pm, am I their bonded servant?”

Mamata while addressing a party gathering in Kolkata also alleged that she was not allowed to meet Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina during her visit to India. “This is the first time I saw that the PM of Bangladesh came and wanted to meet me but was not allowed. I don’t know why they are so angry, they didn’t let me go to Chicago,” the CM added.

The BJP, however, hit back with party leader Amit Malviya claiming that Banerjee was making attempts to “sully” the occasion of the unveiling of statue. “Mamata is making puerile attempts to sully the solemn occasion,” he said. Malviya took to Twitter and said, “Mamata Banerjee is feeling bad that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s statue is being installed in the heart of Delhi. She did nothing to honour his legacy and now that Prime Minister Modi has taken the historic decision, she is making puerile attempts to sully the solemn occasion.”

In the evening here, the Prime Minister unveiled the grand statue of Netaji which has been carved from a monolithic block of granite weighing 280 MT. After 26,000 man-hours of intense artistic endeavour, the granite monolith was chiselled to produce a statue weighing 65 MT. The statue is completely hand sculpted using traditional techniques and modern tools.

“The 28 feet tall towering statue of Netaji is one of the tallest, realistic, monolithic, handmade sculptures in India. The PM had on 21st January 2022 assured that a grand statue of Netaji made of granite will be installed at India Gate as a symbol of the nation’s indebtedness to him,” said an official statement.

A 100-feet-long truck with 140 wheels was specially designed for this monolithic granite stone to travel the 1,665 km from Khammam in Telangana to New Delhi.

The Prime Minister’s arrival at the canopy for the unveiling of the statue of Netaji heralded by traditional Manipuri Shankh Vadayam and Kerala’s traditional Panch Vadayam and Chanda. The unveiling of the statue of Netaji was accompanied by the tune of ‘Kadam Kadam Badhaye Jaa’, the traditional INA song.

Inaugurating the ‘Kartavya Path’ at India Gate here, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said a new era has begun in the form of Kartavya Path that will consign the symbol of colonialism ‘Kingsway’ to history.

Speaking at the inauguration of the ‘Kartavya Path’, PM Modi said, “I congratulate all the people of the country as we come out from another symbol of colonialism. It has been erased forever. ”

He said in the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence, the country has got new inspiration and new energy. “Today we are filling the picture of tomorrow, leaving behind the past, adding new colours to the picture of tomorrow. Today this new aura is visible everywhere, it is the aura of confidence of New India,” he said.

Prime Minister said the Rajpath was for the British Raj, to whom the people of India were slaves. He said Rajpath was also a symbol of slavery and its structure was also a symbol of slavery. “Today its architecture has also changed and its spirit has also changed,” PM stated.

PM Modi said a huge statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose has also been installed near India Gate. At the time of slavery, he said there was a statue of the representative of the British Raj.

He said, “Kartavya Path is not just a road of bricks and stones. It is a living example of India’s democratic past and all-time ideals. When the people of the country come here, the statue of Netaji, the National War Memorial, all these will give them such a great inspiration, they will inculcate their sense of duty.”

Prime Minister said the country has changed hundreds of laws that have been going on since the British era. The time and date of the Indian budget, which was following the time of the British Parliament for so many decades, has also been changed. Through the National Education Policy, he said now the youth of the country are being liberated from the compulsion

“Today the country has also established the life of a modern, strong India by installing the statue of Netaji at the same place,” he said.

Prime Minister said the country has changed hundreds of laws that have been going on since the British era. The time and date of the Indian budget, which was following the time of the British Parliament for so many decades, has also been changed. Through the National Education Policy, he said now the youth of the country are being liberated from the compulsion of foreign language.

As a part of the Central Vista redevelopment project, PM Modi inaugurated the ‘Kartavya Path’ at India Gate.

Over the years, Rajpath and adjoining areas of Central Vista Avenue had been witnessing pressure of increasing traffic of visitors, putting stress on its infrastructure. The PMO said that it lacked basic amenities like public toilets, drinking water, street furniture and adequate parking space. Further, there was inadequate signage, poor maintenance of water features and haphazard parking.

“Also, a need was felt to organise the Republic Day parade and other National events in a less disruptive manner with minimal restrictions on public movement. The redevelopment has been done bearing these concerns in mind while also ensuring the integrity and continuity of architectural character,” it said.

Kartavya Path will exhibit beautified landscapes, lawns with walkways, added green spaces, refurbished canals, new amenity blocks, improved signages and vending kiosks. Further, new pedestrian underpasses, improved parking spaces, new exhibition panels and upgraded night lighting are some other features that will enhance the public experience.

It also includes a number of sustainability features like solid waste management, stormwater management, recycling of used water, rainwater harvesting, water conservation and energy-efficient lighting systems, among others.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate ‘Kartavya Path’ and unveil a statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at India Gate on Thursday.

According to a statement by the Prime Minister’s Office, the move symbolises a shift from erstwhile Rajpath being an icon of power to Kartavya Path being an example of public ownership and empowerment. “Prime Minister will also unveil the statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at India Gate on the occasion. These steps are in line with Prime Minister’s second Panch Pran for New India in Amrit Kaal: remove any trace of colonial mindset,” the statement said.

Over the years, Rajpath and adjoining areas of Central Vista Avenue had been witnessing pressure of increasing traffic of visitors, putting stress on its infrastructure. The PMO said that it lacked basic amenities like public toilets, drinking water, street furniture and adequate parking space.
The statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, which will be unveiled by the Prime Minister, is being installed in the same place where a hologram statue of Netaji was unveiled earlier this year on Parakram Diwas (23 January) by him.

The statue, made of granite, is a fitting tribute to the immense contribution of Netaji to our freedom struggle and would be a symbol of the country’s indebtedness to him.Crafted by Arun Yogiraj, who was the main sculptor, the 28 feet tall statue has been carved from a monolithic granite stone and weighs 65 MT.

</excerpt>

The Income Tax (IT) Department on Wednesday conducted raids at over 50 locations across seven states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to unearth bogus donations and tax fraud by various political parties.

In an unrelated development, IT officials also raided the office premises of the Delhi-based think-tank Centre for Policy Research (CPR), charity organisation Oxfam India and the Bengaluru-based Independent and Public-Spirited Media Foundation (IPSMF), which part funds a number of alternative media outlets in the country.

The political parties under the IT scanner are involved in serious financial impropriety by receiving donations without due statutory compliances, according to sources. The Election Commission of India in May this year took action against such political parties which had claimed IT exemption without complying with statutory requirements. The Election Commission had deleted 87 political parties from its list for bogus donation and tax fraud and violating norms.

Sources further said that the IT team raided the residence of Rashtriya Krantikari Samajwadi Party chief Gopal Rai in Lucknow, who runs several NGOs.

Meanwhile, IT officials also raided the office premises of the Centre for Policy Research (CPR) on the basis of “credible information” about tax evasion by the Delhi-based top policy think-tank. The CPR is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan research institution, which is known for conducting research on a variety of issues related to governance and public policy.

A member in stitution of the Think Tank Initiative (TTI), a programme of the Canada-based International Development Research Centre, the CPR receives grants from a variety of domestic and international sources, including foundations, corporate philanthropy, governments and multilateral agencies.

The think-tank also receives grants from the Indian Council for Social Science Research and is recognised by the Department of Science and Technology.

Oxfam raided by the IT officials is an umbrella organisation of non-profit global agencies, supporting non-government interventions in child education, women empowerment and inequality.

IPSMF, on the other hand, funds a number of alternative media outlets in the country, many of which are known for publishing investigative stories. The foundation to support journalism was started by noted journalist TS Ninan. Among its donors are the likes of Azim Premji, Adi Godrej and Nandan Nilekani.

</excerpt>

The Supreme Court on Wednesday observed that there is no comparison between rudraksh and cross with Hijab as they are different since they are worn inside the shirt and not visible to others.

Justice Hemant Gupta’s remark came when Senior Advocate Devadatt Kamat tried to refer to the wearing of religious identities like rudraksha, cross by students. Justice Gupta said rudraksh and cross are different as they are worn inside the shirt and not visible to others.

A Bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia, which is hearing various petitions challenging the Karnataka HC judgement upholding ban in educational institutes, on Monday said that there is no similarities between pagdi and chunari with Hijab.

Senior Advocate Kamat submitted that the question about reasonable accommodation is not about whether it is visible or not. Kamat also referred to positive and negative secularism and said that Secularism in India is not the concept of negative secularism as followed in France or Turkey, where the display of religion in public is offensive.Kamat said that the Government is resurrecting a provision proposed in the Constituent Assembly Debates which sought to prohibit the display of religion in public.

Justice Gupta remarked that secularism was not there in the original constitution. The court said that even in the absence of the word, we were secular. Secularism and socialism as words were added in the Constitution as political statements later, the court remarked.

Senior Advocate Devadatt Kamat, appearing for one of the petitioners, said before the Supreme Court that he is not challenging the prescription of uniform and SC observation were right on can anybody turn up in jeans and he respectfully bows down. He said that the petitioner is challenging the state saying that it will not allow students to wear Hijab despite wearing uniform. Kamat said it is a case of headscarves it is not a burqa or jilbab as they are different.

Senior Advocate Kamat pointed to a lady lawyer present in the courtroom and wearing a hijab and said that she is wearing a headscarf of the colour of the uniform. Kamat said does the headscarf of the same uniform colour offend anyone or cause any indiscipline

Senior Advocate Kamat referred to a circular of Kendriya Vidyalayas, which allows Hijab with matching colour of the uniform.Senior Advocate Kamat referred to a judgement delivered by the South African Court which permits a Hindu girl to wear a nose ring in school as part of her cultural belief. Judge Gupta said that as far as he knows nose ring is not a part of religious practice. Kamat replied nose ring may not be religiously central but was part of the girl’s identity and referred to some religious significance of the nose ring.

During the hearing, Justice Gupta said that there is no other country as diverse as like our countries and all other countries have a uniform law for their citizens.

Kamat referred to US Supreme Court on Hijab and Canadian court on Kada for SikhsJustice Gupta said “How do we compare the US, and Canada to our country? We are very conservative…” Justice Gupta also said when these courts pass judgment it is dependent on their social and cultural context.

Kamat cited the 2014 NALSA judgment of the Supreme Court and said that to right to dress is recognised as a fundamental right under Article 19(1)(a). The court remarked that it cannot take this to illogical ends and said, “if you say right to dress is a fundamental right then right to undress also becomes a fundamental right.”

This was after Kamat cited the 2014 NALSA judgment of the Supreme Court to contend that right to dress is recognised as a fundamental right under Article 19(1)(a).As the hearing remained inconclusive, the court will continue hearing the matter tomorrow.

After the industrialist and former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry died in a road accident in Palghar, near Mumbai, Police asked the car manufacturer company why the airbags in the ill-fated SUV did not open at the time of the accident.

Palghar Police asked several questions the car manufacturer company, “Why do not the airbags open? Was there any mechanical fault in the vehicle? What was the brake fluid of the car? What was the tire pressure?” Police said that these vehicles come out of the plant only after proper testing. “In such a situation, what is the report of the collision impact of the manufacturer’s investigation? Was the steering locked after the collision?” Police asked the car manufacturer.

Meanwhile, the car manufacturer said that the team would provide clarifications to the officials wherever required and will cooperate.

The remarks came after the Police asked the car manufacturer company why the airbags in the ill-fated SUV did not open at the time of the accident. “As a responsible brand respecting customer privacy, our team is cooperating with the authorities where possible, and we will provide any clarifications to them directly as required. We will continue our ongoing efforts to increase road safety awareness as a responsible manufacturer while equipping our vehicles with the latest safety features and technologies,” read a statement from Mercedes-Benz India.

According to sources, the car manufacturer company has informed the Palghar police that the data recorder chip of the vehicle will be sent to Germany for decoding and after decoding from Germany, detailed information about the SUV will be made available to the police.

It may take several days in this process. In this data recorder, detailed information about the vehicle will be available. Information will be there like how the brake, air bag and other machinery were working. The speed of the car at the time of the accident will also be known.

The estimates about the speed of the vehicle are made on the basis of different video footage or time calculations. The average speed of the vehicle will be known but it is impossible to estimate the speed of the vehicle at different places at different times. Therefore, whatever the speed of the vehicle must have been at the time of the accident, the exact information will be revealed only after getting detailed information from the data recorder, said police sources.

Sources said Cyrus Mistry and others had left Udvada at 1:25 pm on Sunday and the accident happened around 2:28 pm. So they covered a distance of about 60 to 65 kilometres in 1 hour and 2 minutes.

Police are verifying whether they had stopped somewhere during this journey or they were moving at a very high speed in the middle.

Well-known industrialist and former Tata Sons chairman Mistry died in a road accident near Mumbai on Sunday evening. According to Palghar Police, Mistry was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai when his car hit the divider. There were four people in the car. Two died on the spot, including Mistry, while the other two were shifted to hospital.

Apart from Mistry, another deceased has been identified as Jahangir Dinsha Pandole. The injured Anayata Pandole and Darius Pandole are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. The driver of the car in which Cyrus Mistry was travelling lost control due to overspeeding and rammed into the divider, said Palghar Police sources on Sunday.“Prima facie, it looks like the car driver lost control. Cyrus Mistry’s mortal remains are at a government hospital in Kasa. An Accidental Death Report (ADR) is being filed by the police, as per procedure,” Palghar Police sources said.

As Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday met a series of Opposition leaders to explore the possibility of ties before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he brushed aside speculation of him being the Prime Ministerial candidate, saying that “I am not even a claimant, I don’t even desire it.”

While addressing the media after meeting leaders cutting across the party lines in the national capital, Nitish said, “We have discussed that if the Left parties, regional parties in different states, and Congress come together then it will be a huge thing.”

Nitish on Tuesday met CPM leader Sitaram Yechury at his office here. “We are together, that is why I am coming here”, said Nitish on meeting Yechury. “We have discussed that if the Left parties, regional parties in different states, and Congress come together then it will be a huge thing.”

Nitish met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the national capital on Monday and discussed the strategy for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls and the possibility of bringing like-minded parties together.

According to Congress sources, Nitish, who met Gandhi for the first time since his reunification with the Mahagathbandhan, of which Congress is a part in Bihar, expressed gratitude to the Wayanad MP for his party’s support to his government. The sources also said that both the parties will continue their “concrete discussions” in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.

The Bihar Chief Minister also met former Karnataka CM and JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy during his visit to Delhi.

The meetings came amid the buzz that Kumar is attempting to project himself as the prime ministerial candidate in 2024. However, he cleared the air on the matter.Kumar, once again in Delhi, called for opposition unity and ruled out harbouring prime ministerial aspirations.

The meeting of Kumar with opposition leaders comes days after Telangana Chief Minister KC Rao visited Bihar and held discussions on the political scenario in the country.

However, during KCR’s one-day visit, he avoided giving a direct response to a question about whether Nitish Kumar will run as the opposition’s candidate for Prime Minister, saying that the opposition parties would meet and make that decision. While talking to the media during his visit to Bihar, KCR was asked whether Bihar CM Nitish Kumar will be the next PM candidate for the opposition. However, mocking at Nitish’s sojourn in New Delhi, former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Modi said that the state’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is on a political tour in the national capital while the people of Bihar have been facing a flood.

</excerpt>

Highlighting the importance of seatbelts, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that it would be mandatory for all the passengers in a car to wear them.

Sharing a video from an event, the Union Minister said that seatbelts will be mandated. “It will now be mandatory for all the people sitting in the car to wear a seat belt,” tweeted Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

In the video, he also highlighted that the safety beeps will now be present for rare seats along with the front seats which will buzz if one doesn’t put on a seat belt.

His remarks came after well-known industrialist and former Tata Sons chairman Mistry died in a road accident near Mumbai on Sunday evening. Reports of him not wearing the rare seat belt soon made rounds after the accident.

According to Palghar Police, Mistry was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai when his car hit the divider. There were four people in the car. Two died on the spot, including Mistry, while the other two were shifted to hospital.

Seeking the cooperation of people in enforcing road safety norms, Gadkari recalled that he had seen clips being used to prevent the beep of seatbelt alarm during his travel in vehicles of four chief ministers in the past year.

The minister, who spoke at an event here, said instructions have been issued against the manufacture and use of such clips. “Let me tell you something new. I travelled with chief ministers of four states during the past year. I sit in the front seat and use the seatbelt. I found a clip placed where the seatbelt is buckled. I scolded the driver. I am talking of the vehicles of four chief ministers, not talking of the common man. The seatbelt was fastened at the back. I told the driver to take it out and start the vehicle till then and then I put on the seatbelt,” he said.

“Such clips are available in the market. Some people apply them so that there is no sound,” he added.

He said rules are being made that this is captured on camera and a fine is imposed if the seatbelt is not fastened. “This situation.. the clip was there in the cars of chief ministers of four states. I have issued orders that manufacturing and installing such a clip will be an offence. There is a problem. Here we need the cooperation of people,” he said.

He said such clips can be found with some drivers and the passenger on the front seat does not use the seatbelt and the clip is used to prevent the sound of the alarm.Answering a question on whether mandating airbags for all passengers will raise the production cost for small cars, Gadkari said that cost will come down as the numbers increase.

He said some companies, when they export their cars put six airbags and when they make for India, they put four airbags. “Cost of airbags will come down as production increases. It can come down to Rs 900 for an airbag. .I have told the automobile industry that there cannot be a compromise with safety,” he said.

Gadkari said the government will not make any compromise with international standards and practices concerning road safety. The minister said that country suffers 3.2 per cent loss in GDP due to road accidents. “Savings lives is the highest priority,” the minister said.

Gadkari said he has achieved success in a number of areas as Road Transport Minister but on road safety and road accidents, “we could not do as much good work as we should have done and I am pained by it”.

About mandatory airbags in rear seats coming into effect this October, he said: “Already it is in the process, we need some approvals and we are on it.”
