</excerpt>

Farmer leaders are preparing for a key meeting with government representatives on Friday to discuss their 13 pending demands, including a law guaranteeing Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops and loan waivers. The meeting is expected to take place in Chandigarh on Friday afternoon.

Senior farmer leaders associated with Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), including Sarvan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal—who has been on a hunger strike since November 26—will be part of the discussions. While addressing a gathering of farmers at Khanauri border, Dallewal on Wednesday said he would participate in a meeting of the Central government panel, to be held in Chandigarh on Friday on farmers’ demands.

This meeting is crucial, as earlier talks between farmer unions and central ministers have remained inconclusive. The last meeting in February last year failed when farmers rejected the government’s proposal to purchase five crops—arhar, cotton, maize, lentils, and black gram—at MSP for five years. Farmer leaders refused to accept this, insisting that nothing less than MSP at C2+50% for all crops with guaranteed procurement would be acceptable.

Since February 13, hundreds of farmers have been protesting at the Shambhu border along NH-44, one of the busiest highways in India. They were stopped by Haryana authorities from marching towards Delhi, where they had hoped to revive their 2020-21 protest momentum. The ongoing protest has severely affected daily life and business along the highway.

The farmers have been living in temporary shelters set up in tractor trailers, braving the weather and continuing their fight. The blockade has caused massive inconvenience to commuters traveling between Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, disrupting the lives of thousands of people.
Local businesses near the highway have suffered significant losses due to the prolonged agitation, with shopkeepers and vendors losing hope of returning to normal operations. Barricades erected by Haryana police at the Shambhu border—250 kilometers from Delhi’s Singhu border, the center of the 2020-21 protests—symbolize the hurdles farmers are facing in their struggle to reignite their movement.

Protests have also been staged at Khanauri and Ratanpura borders since February, with farmer leaders determined to push for a resolution to their demands. However, the government’s inaction has left the protest in a stalemate, testing the patience and endurance of the farmers.
As they prepare for Friday’s talks, farmer leaders remain cautious, citing past experiences that left many of their demands unmet. They hope that this meeting will finally bring the much-needed breakthrough in their long-standing fight for farmers’ rights.

</excerpt>

Farmers’ protest has taken a grave turn with their leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal taking a fast-unto-death stance since November 26. The Supreme Court on Friday pulled up the Punjab government and said medical aid has to be given to him.

“The impression it is getting that he was not getting medical aid. Take all measures to ensure that farmers’ leader was given medical aid, said the vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and Sudhanshu Dhulia expressing concern over the life and safety of Dallewal,

“If there is a law and order situation, you have to deal with it with iron hands. Somebody’s life is at stake. You need to take it seriously. Medical aid has to be given and the impression is that you are not following it,” it said.

The apex court also issued a notice to the Punjab government on a contempt petition against its Chief Secretary of Punjab for non-compliance with the December 20 top court order regarding medical aid to Dallewal and to convince him to go to hospital.

It directed the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to file a compliance report by Saturday when it would again hear the matter.

Dallewal, the convener of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) has been on a fast-unto-death at the Khanouri border to press the Centre to accept the farmers’ demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

During the special hearing today, the bench expressed strong reservations about protesting farmers objecting to and obstructing attempts by the Punjab government to provide medical aid to Dallewal.

The bench said, “We have serious doubts about the farmers who are creating obstacles to provide him aid”.

The top court has been asking the Punjab government to ensure Dallewal gets proper medical aid during fast unto death.

</excerpt>

Tractors flooded the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border as farmers organised a march on tractors, where protesting farmers continue to remain over their various demands.

The ongoing Punjab and Haryana farmers’ protest has intensified after violent clashes between farmers and Haryana police in which 17 farmers were reportedly injured. The farmers have stood up to their warning and are continuing with tractor march planned for December 16 and a ‘Rail Roko’ on December 18.

Anil Vij, Haryana Minister has urged farmers to find alternative ways to protest, rather than blocking trains.

In a statement, he said, “After permission from the Administration, every organisation can hold a protest. The farmers should not block trains as it will cause inconvenience to many people. They should find another way to protest.”

Earlier, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher confirmed the planned protests, stating that the tractor march would be held outside Punjab on December 16, followed by a large-scale rail blockade in Punjab two days later.

His announcement came after a group of 101 farmers, known as the ‘Jathha,’ was blocked by police while trying to march toward the Shambhu border.

Pandher condemned the actions of the police, accusing them of using excessive force to disperse the protestors.

“The Indian government, the fifth-largest economy in the world, used force against 101 farmers. Chemical water was thrown at us using cannons, bombs were hurled, and tear gas shells were fired. Seventeen farmers have been injured, many of whom are in serious condition, and they are not being given proper treatment in the hospital. We urge the Punjab government to ensure adequate treatment,” Pandher claimed. He called on the Punjab government to ensure adequate medical care for the injured farmers.

Pandher also announced that the farmers would continue their protest with a ‘Rail Roko’ (Rail Blockade) in Punjab on December 18. He urged the people of Punjab, particularly those living near railway tracks, to participate in the blockade by stopping train services from 12 to 3 pm.

Addressing the political climate, Pandher criticised the opposition, particularly Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, for not effectively representing farmers’ concerns in Parliament. “We appeal to all Punjabis to participate in large numbers,” he added, stressing the importance of the upcoming protests.

Despite the heavy-handed response from authorities, farmers have remained committed to their demands, which include securing Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantees and opposing corporate control over agricultural markets.

Congress Demands Legal Guarantee of MSP for Farmers, What Does It Mean?

<excerpt>Congress leader Jairam Ramesh reiterated the demand for fixing MSP at 1.5 times the cost of cultivation for farmers.
</excerpt>

Congress MPs staged a protest on the Parliament in the national capital premises on Friday regarding the implementation and raise in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for farmers.

Holding banners and placards, they raised slogans demanding legal guarantee for MSP to the farmers and urged the centre to listen to the farmers’ concerns who have been protesting since last year, on and off.

This protest follows a large gathering of farmers at the Shambhu border, where they demanded the government address their 12-point charter of demands, including the MSP guarantee.

Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda urged the central government to engage in dialogue with farmers. Criticising the central government, Hooda said that during the last farmers’ protest, the government had assured farmers of an MSP guarantee, but now it appears they are reneging on that promise.

“Earlier when farmers’ protest had happened, the government had promised MSP to the farmers. Since this promise was not fulfilled, farmers have been protesting at Shambhu border. Today again, the farmers have decided to march to Delhi which is a sign of the government going back on its promise. We demand that the government should talk to the farmers immediately…” Hooda said.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed solidarity with the protesting farmers and announced the party’s unwavering support for their ongoing march to Parliament.

Taking to his official handle on X, Jairam Ramesh posted, “Farmers are marching to Parliament today. Their protest has received a huge booster dose after getting support from the Vice President and the Honourable Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Farmers and their organizations are continuously agitating.”

Ramesh reiterated the farmers’ demands, including a legal guarantee for MSP and fixing MSP at 1.5 times the comprehensive cost of cultivation, as recommended by the MS Swaminathan Commission.

He also stressed the need to restructure the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and called for an independent agency to oversee agricultural trade policies.

The renewed call for a ‘Delhi Chalo’ march by farmers comes as farmer unions maintain that several of their demands, including the MSP guarantee, remain unaddressed.

Sukhwinder Kaur, a protestor, emphasized the importance of their demands, saying, “We have 12 demands and our main demand is that of the MSP. The Punjab government said they would do it but even after waiting for one month, they didn’t, and we protested against it. We are ready to talk to them but they have not asked us anything. We are not begging; we are just asking for something for what we do. Where are we at fault?”

As tensions escalate, opposition leaders are rallying around the farmers, urging the government to engage in meaningful dialogue. The situation is being closely monitored as political and public pressure mounts on the government to resolve the crisis effectively.

Also read: Mitchell Starc’s Stunning 6-Wicket Haul Shreds India for 180 on Day 1 of Adelaide Test

What Does It Mean?

The Minimum Support Price (MSP) is the price at which the government guarantees to buy crops from farmers, ensuring they receive a fair income regardless of market fluctuations. Farmers are demanding a legal guarantee for MSP to protect them from financial instability caused by unpredictable market conditions.

The MS Swaminathan Commission recommended fixing MSP at 1.5 times the cost of cultivation to make farming more viable for small and marginal farmers. However, without a legal framework, the MSP system remains a policy decision rather than a binding obligation, leaving farmers vulnerable.

The protest also highlights broader issues in Indian agriculture, such as the need for better crop insurance schemes (like the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana) and fairer trade policies. Farmer unions are calling for reforms that prioritize their welfare and address systemic challenges.

The ongoing ‘Delhi Chalo’ march signifies the growing frustration among farmers, who feel that their voices are being ignored despite previous assurances. Political leaders, especially from the opposition, are leveraging this opportunity to align with farmers, potentially increasing pressure on the government to address these demands comprehensively.

The resolution of this issue will require a balanced approach, addressing both farmers’ demands and ensuring sustainable agricultural reforms for the future.

The Noida Police have suggested alternative routes for vehicles to minimise congestion:

Chilla Border to Greater Noida: Sector 14-A flyover, Golchakkar Chowk, Sandeep Paper Mill Chowk, Jhunjhupura Chowk

DND Border to Delhi: Film City flyover, Sector-18, Elevated Road

Kalindi Border to Delhi: Mahamaya flyover, Sector-37

Greater Noida to Delhi: Charkha roundabout, Kalindi Kunj, or Hajipur underpass via Sector-51 and Model Town

Yamuna Expressway Traffic: Exit at Jewar toll, proceed via Khurja and Jahangirpur

Peripheral Expressway Traffic: Use Dadri or Dasna exits instead of Sirsa

Farmers’ Demands at the Heart of Protest

The farmers are marching with five key demands aimed at improving their livelihood and ensuring proper compensation for land acquisition. These include:

Allocation of 10% plots and a 64.7% increase in compensation under the old land acquisition law.

As the farmers’ march progresses, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and work to manage the traffic disruptions.

Farmers in Punjab are preparing for a one-day protest on Saturday, October 26, in response to several demands, including the timely procurement of paddy. According to news agency PTI, the farmers will block roads at various locations throughout Punjab as part of their demonstration.

Surjeet Singh Phul, Chairman of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Krantikari) Punjab, announced, “On October 26, we will stage a road blockade at four key points, kicking off at 1 pm.” The planned “chakka jam” will occur at specific sites in Sangrur and Moga districts, as well as in Phagwara and Batala. The protest will continue indefinitely if necessary.

Reasons Behind the Protest

The primary grievance of the farmers is the slow pace of paddy procurement. Phul highlighted that only 10% of the 11.10 lakh tonnes of paddy that arrived at Punjab grain markets during the first 15 days of the procurement season, which began on October 1, has been collected by procurement agencies, indicating significant delays in processing the abundant paddy crop.

In light of these issues, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has called on the central government for support in acquiring paddy.

A significant meeting addressing the delay in paddy procurement was held in Delhi, chaired by Union Food Minister Prahlad Joshi, State Minister for Food Ravneet Singh Bittu, and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Concerns Over Stubble Burning

In addition to the procurement delays, the protest will also address penalties imposed on farmers for stubble burning. Rakesh Tikait, a spokesperson for the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), criticized the government for its actions against farmers. He questioned, “What should they do about stubble?” Tikait noted that in Haryana, farmers who burn stubble face severe consequences, including a two-year ban on selling their produce at mandis. He urged the government to provide viable solutions for managing stubble without resorting to burning.

On October 21, Punjab farmers appealed to the government for a permanent solution to the stubble burning issue, emphasizing that burning is often their only option.

Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu criticized the AAP government for failing to support farmers effectively, stating that it has resorted to filing FIRs against them instead.

</excerpt>

Kangana Ranaut, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament from Mandi, has once again found herself at the center of controversy. This time, it’s over her suggestion that the three farm laws, which were repealed following extensive farmer protests, should be reinstated. Her comments have drawn criticism from the Opposition, prompting the BJP to publicly distance itself from her statements.

BJP Clarifies: Kangana’s Remarks Are Personal Opinions

BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia released a video statement clarifying that Kangana’s comments reflect her personal opinion and not the party’s official stance on the farm laws. He emphasized that she is “not authorized” to make such declarations on behalf of the BJP.

“In recent days, a statement by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on the farm bills, which were previously withdrawn by the central government, has been circulating on social media. I want to make it clear that this is solely her personal opinion,” Bhatia said. “Kangana Ranaut is not authorized to speak for the BJP on this matter, and her views do not represent the party’s stance. We do not endorse this statement.”

Kangana Responds: Confirms Her Views Are Personal

Acknowledging the BJP spokesperson’s clarification, Kangana Ranaut confirmed that her views were indeed personal and did not reflect the party’s position on the farm laws. She took to the social media platform X to respond, writing, “Absolutely, my views on Farmers Laws are personal and they don’t represent the party’s stand on those Bills. Thanks.”

</excerpt>

The Supreme Court on Friday both Haryana and Punjab to suggest common names for the constitution of a committee to reach out to the protesting farmers at the Shambhu border to find a solution to their demands.

SC says that its earlier order of maintaining a status quo on the Shambhu border near Ambala, where farmers have been camping since February 13, will continue.

In the previous hearing on July 24, to address the ongoing impasse, the court proposed the formation of an independent committee to engage with farmers and other stakeholders to find a mutually acceptable solution to their demands.

The bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta, and Ujjal Bhuyan, expressed concern over the prolonged blockade of the national highway and the trust deficit between the farmers and the government. It emphasized the need for a neutral intermediary to facilitate dialogue and build confidence.

The court directed the Punjab and Haryana governments to suggest names for the proposed committee within a week. If the states fail to do so, the court will independently identify suitable members.

While maintaining the status quo at the Shambhu border, the Supreme Court also directed both states to initiate a phased removal of barricades to ease public inconvenience. This decision comes in response to a Haryana government appeal against a Punjab and Haryana High Court order that mandated the opening of the highway.

The Solicitor General, representing Haryana, argued against opening the border, citing potential law and order issues and the presence of heavy military equipment at the site. The court acknowledged these concerns but stressed the importance of the state taking proactive steps to engage with the farmers.

The farmers’ protest at the Shambhu border began in February in support of various demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

In a startling incident at Chandigarh airport, a CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) constable allegedly assaulted Bollywood actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut during a security check. The altercation occurred around 3:30 pm as Ranaut was en route to board a flight to Delhi.

According to reports, the constable reportedly slapped Kangana Ranaut and hurled abuses at her. Ranaut, in a subsequent video message, confirmed the incident, stating that the constable targeted her and cited support for the farmers’ protest as justification for the assault.

In response, Congress leader Vikramaditya Singh, who lost to Ranaut in the recent Lok Sabha elections, condemned the incident, labeling it “unfortunate” and calling for action against the constable involved. Singh emphasized the CISF’s responsibility to maintain a peaceful atmosphere within airports and urged the government to take appropriate measures.

Meanwhile, the CISF swiftly responded to the incident by suspending the constable in question and initiating an inquiry. A senior CISF officer confirmed the suspension and stated that an FIR is being filed against the constable.

The constable, in her defense, cited her mother’s involvement in the farmers’ protest as a motivating factor behind her actions. She expressed indignation at Ranaut’s remarks about the protest and defended her mother’s participation.

This incident has sparked debates regarding security protocols at airports and the boundaries of political expression. Ranaut’s victory over Singh in the Lok Sabha elections adds a political dimension to the altercation, further intensifying public interest and scrutiny.

As investigations proceed, questions linger about the appropriate response to such incidents and the need for maintaining professionalism in security operations, especially in sensitive environments like airports.

This marks the fourth consecutive day of protests. Demonstrators are demanding the release of three farmers arrested by Haryana Police. Officials report that numerous trains, including those from New Delhi to Amritsar, Rishikesh to Sri Ganganagar, and Ludhiana to Ambala Cantt, were cancelled due to the agitation.

Under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), farmers have been staging protests at Shambhu in Patiala. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated that the protest would persist until the release of the three farmers.

Prominent farmer leader Rakesh Tikait declined to openly endorse any political party, emphasizing that he wouldn’t advise anyone on whom to vote for while the model code of conduct is in effect. However, he hinted that those familiar with him would already understand which party or candidate he believes is beneficial for farmers.

Since February 13, farmers have maintained their presence at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders, situated between Punjab and Haryana, after their march was halted by security forces.

Security forces arrested three farmers, Navdeep Jalbera, Gurkirat Shahpur, and Anish Khatkar, amidst the ongoing agitation. Navdeep and Gurkirat were apprehended on February 28 near Mohali International Airport, while Anish Khatkar was detained on March 19 by Haryana Police in connection with a murder attempt case registered on February 13 related to the farmers’ protest. According to farmer leaders, Anish Khatkar has been on a hunger strike since his arrest, and his health is deteriorating progressively.

The SKM and the KMM are leading the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, advocating for the government to address their demands, which include a legal assurance of Minimum Support Price for crops.

</excerpt>

Farmers assembled in large numbers at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan to conduct the ‘Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat’ today. A leader from the Samyukt Kisan Morcha referred to the Bharatiya Janata Party as “anti-farmer.”

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha has organized a one-day “Delhi Chalo” event, with various organizations affiliated with the front gathering at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. Thousands of farmers have already arrived for the event.

Participants in the Mahapanchayat stated that the stage proceedings would commence at noon on Thursday. Darshan Pal, a leader of SKM, mentioned that since their initial arrival in Delhi during the 2020 Kisan Andolan, they have expanded their network and established rules for their operations.

The purpose of today’s Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat is to expose what the farmers perceive as the BJP government’s betrayal. They aim to highlight the BJP’s alleged anti-farmer stance nationwide. Despite facing challenges in reaching the venue and being granted permission only two days prior, with several conditions imposed, the farmers condemn these actions. They wish to emphasize that “Delhi is not far away.”

Regarding security arrangements, DCP Central M Harsha Vardhan assured that the police have taken extensive measures to maintain law and order. The organizing group has provided a written undertaking with various points concerning law and order. Despite a significant number of farmers in attendance, the police are hopeful that everything will proceed smoothly, with minimal traffic and law and order disturbances.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has urged farmers and workers to ensure massive and peaceful participation in the ‘Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat’ on March 14. The event aims to intensify the fight against what the SKM perceives as pro-corporate, communal, and dictatorial policies of the Modi Government, focusing on saving farming, food security, livelihood, and the people from corporate exploitation.

The Mahapanchayat will adopt a Sankalp Patra or Letter of Resolution to escalate the ongoing struggle to achieve the genuine demands of the farmers and workers. It will also declare future plans of action in the run-up to the general election to the Lok Sabha.

The Delhi Police have issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the Mahapanchayat at Ramlila Maidan on March 14, ensuring basic amenities such as parking, water, toilets, and ambulance services. The SKM has welcomed the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Chaduni group of farmers to join the event.

SKM strongly opposes the Modi Government’s decision to sign the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Free Trade Agreement, alleging that it would severely impact the domestic market and people’s livelihoods.

Scheduled from 11 am to 2 pm, the assembly aims to escalate opposition against government policies, particularly focusing on issues like Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the implementation of recommendations from the Swaminathan Commission. Led by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), the coalition of farmers’ groups that spearheaded the 2020-21 protests against the three central agricultural laws, today’s protest aims to adopt a resolution titled ‘Sankalp Patra.’ This resolution will outline strategies against pro-corporate policies and announce future actions, especially regarding the upcoming general elections.

In anticipation of the ‘Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat,’ the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police issued an advisory warning commuters about potential traffic disruptions, particularly near the Delhi borders in Noida. They mentioned the possibility of traffic slowdowns and announced rigorous vehicle checks before allowing passage towards the national capital, with potential diversions if needed.

To address potential traffic challenges, both the Delhi Police and the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police will step up checks and install barriers at all Noida-Delhi borders. Traffic diversions might be implemented if congestion increases on routes from Gautam Buddh Nagar to the Delhi border. To aid the public during traffic disruptions, the police have provided a traffic helpline number – 9971009001 – and recommended commuters to explore alternative routes to minimize inconveniences.

This event coincides with ongoing sit-ins by other farmer unions, including the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and SKM (Non-Political), at Shambhu and Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana border. These sit-ins commenced a month ago following the disruption of their “Delhi Chalo” march by security forces.

The ‘Rail Roko’ protest, scheduled between 12 noon and 4 pm, coincides with the farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ march. Detailing the […]
</excerpt>

In a bid to escalate their ongoing protest and press for a series of demands, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher announced on Sunday that farmers’ unions would conduct a ‘Rail Roko’ protest across the nation.

The ‘Rail Roko’ protest, scheduled between 12 noon and 4 pm, coincides with the farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ march.

Detailing the protest plans, Pandher, the general secretary of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, stated, “As part of the agitation that began on the Punjab-Haryana border on February 13, we have called for a ‘Rail Roko’ protest across the country today.”

“We appeal to all farmers, laborers, and the general public across the country to support us in the ‘Rail Roko’ today in large numbers. We also urge those who are scheduled to travel on trains between 12 noon and 4 pm today to postpone their journey by a few hours. Train passengers may face some inconvenience today. However, this is only a partial ‘Rail Roko’,” Pandher informed ANI on Sunday.

He further mentioned that as part of the protest, hundreds of farmers would occupy railway tracks at various locations.

The protesting farmers have been camped at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march was halted by security forces on February 13.

The protesters have presented several demands to the government, including a legal assurance of minimum support prices (MSP) for their produce, the withdrawal of police cases against them from previous protests, pensions for farmers and agricultural laborers, debt relief, and no increase in electricity rates.

During the latest round of talks with the farmers’ delegation, which concluded after midnight on February 18, a panel of three Union ministers offered to procure five crops—moong dal, urad dal, tur dal, maize, and cotton—from farmers at MSP for five years through central agencies. However, the protesting farmers rejected the offer and returned to their protest sites.

</excerpt>

Protesting farmers are set to march towards Delhi today to assert their various demands to the central government, leading to increased security measures at the Punjab and Haryana borders. The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, the two umbrella bodies spearheading the farmers’ protests, issued a call on March 3 for farmers from across the country to converge on the national capital. Additionally, they have planned a nationwide “rail roko” protest next week lasting four hours to advocate for their demands, including a legal guarantee of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops by the Centre.

The farmers have maintained a presence at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana after their “Delhi Chalo” march was halted by security forces on February 13. While protesters from Punjab and Haryana will persist at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points, farmers and laborers from other states are urged to join the movement in Delhi today.

In a bid to escalate the agitation, farmer leaders have called for a nationwide ‘rail roko’ protest on March 10, spanning from 12 pm to 4 pm. Furthermore, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has declared a ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ in Delhi on March 14, with the participation of over 400 farmers’ outfits to exert pressure on the Centre to meet their demands.

In response to these developments, the Delhi Police has heightened its vigilance at the Tikri, Singhu, and Ghazipur borders, anticipating the farmers’ protest. Additional police and paramilitary forces have been deployed at railway and metro stations, as well as bus stands. Authorities have announced intensified security checks at various locations, warning of potential traffic congestion in the capital.

The leader of the Congress claimed that the MSP and double income guarantees “turn out to be fake” and that the Modi government was “anti-farmer” and that farmers were being treated like “enemies” for standing up for their rights.

Kharge claimed in a series of tweets in hindi, “To benefit its select capitalist friends, the Modi government has consistently sacrificed the interests of farmers. When the farmer who provides food to the country wants to produce a bumper crop and export it. Then Modi government bans the export of wheat, rice, sugar, onion, pulses etc.”

According to his post, the BJP has continued in this manner throughout its duration, and as a result, agricultural exports, which rose by 153% under Congress-UPA control, only by 64% under BJP leadership.

“Not only did the Modi government’s guarantee of MSP and double income turn out to be fake, the anti-farmer BJP left no stone unturned to break the backs of our 62 crore farmers,” he alleged.

“Now when farmers are demanding their rights, So Modi government is treating them like enemies,” he said.

Sarwan Singh Pandher, the general secretary of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, stated on Monday that there has been no change in the intention to march towards Delhi.

According to the leader of the farmers, the groups of farmers will stay at the borders of Shambhu and Khanauri till the government opens the routes leading to Delhi.

“The farmers from Punjab and Haryana will remain here (Khanauri and Shambhu border), we will not move forward without our tractors and trolleys. We have not changed our decision to march towards Delhi, we will wait until the government reopens the roads,” Pandher said while speaking to ANI on Monday.

On March 14, the national Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) organization called on the Mahapanchayat in Delhi to bring attention to matters concerning the legal guarantee of MSP, opposition to the power reform bill, debt relief, pensions for the elderly, reversal of labor laws, and other outstanding issues.

</excerpt>

Farmers have opted to suspend their “Delhi Chalo” protest march until February 29, following a clash with law enforcement during a farm gathering in Haryana’s Hisar. The incident at Kheri Chopta, which is a recurring episode amid the ongoing protests over MSP for agricultural products, was triggered by the detention of 19 individuals leading the tractor march. Despite clashes resulting in injuries to 15 police officers and an unspecified number of protesters, the farmers intend to resume their march after this temporary suspension.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), the primary orchestrators of the protest at the Shambu and Khanuari borders, have declared that a decision regarding the next steps will be made on February 29. Sarwan Singh Pandher, a prominent leader among the farmers, has outlined the schedule for the upcoming days, which includes a candle march on February 24, agricultural issue seminars on February 25, burning effigies of the World Trade Organization and the Central government on February 26, and numerous meetings of SKM (Non-Political) and KMM in the subsequent days.

The choice to extend the pause in the march follows clashes at the Khanauri border, resulting in the death of a protester and injuries to around 12 police personnel. The protest, initiated on February 13, has witnessed four rounds of talks between farm leaders and the central government in the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. However, these discussions have not succeeded in resolving the impasse between the government and the protesting farmers.

The demands of the Punjab farmers encompass the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, a moratorium on electricity tariff increases, withdrawal of police cases, “justice” for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and compensation for the families of farmers who lost their lives during a previous protest in 2020-21.

Highlights Of Farmers’ Protest

Initiation of ‘Delhi Chalo’ March:

The ‘Delhi Chalo’ march commenced in February, with farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh advocating for the government’s legal assurance of the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) for agricultural produce.

Temporary Halt and Resumption:

Farmers temporarily suspended the protests on February 19 after engaging in the fourth round of talks with Union Ministers. However, the march resumed on February 21, resulting in confrontations between protestors and law enforcement.

Clashes and Tragic Incident:

Violent clashes occurred at the Khanauri border in Haryana, leading to the tragic death of a 22-year-old farmer. The unrest prompted another pause in the march on February 21, lasting for two days.

Demand for Justice:

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha is advocating for a murder case against the police officers deemed responsible for the farmer’s death. Additionally, a tractor march has been announced for February 26 as part of the ongoing protests.

Anticipated Next Steps:

Today marks a crucial juncture as farmer leaders are expected to decide on the subsequent course of action in the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, following the two-day pause in the protest.

Observance of ‘Black Friday’:

Farmers, led by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), are observing a ‘Black Friday’ to protest the death of a farmer at Khanauri Border in Sangrur district, Punjab. This demonstration is part of the broader ongoing protests.

</excerpt>

The General Secretary of Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Sarwan Singh Pandher, has criticized the Punjab government for its failure to initiate an FIR regarding the death of a farmer youth at the Khanauri Border during the ongoing protests. Pandher strongly condemned the government’s actions, stating, “The way the Punjab government is insulting the martyrdom of our martyrs is condemnable.” He raised questions about the delay in filing the FIR, despite all demands being accepted during discussions.

In Pandher’s own words, “Talks were being held with the Punjab Government on the death of Shubhkaran Singh. All our demands were accepted, that a case under Section 302 (murder) be filed against those who attacked, that the Punjab Government give the status of ‘martyr’ to Shubhkaran Singh, that discussions on compensation be held with his family, and that a Board will be constituted for his postmortem and its videography will be done. It has been more than 14 hours now but the Punjab Government is not giving any answer.”

Expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s inaction, Pandher criticized the handling of the incident and the lack of accountability for the actions of the forces against farmers. He voiced concerns about the government’s stance on the protest, pointing out discrepancies in their statements and actions.

Pandher questioned, “Our Chief Minister is saying that the central government is putting pressure on us, that they will break the government, they will impose 356. Let them, I don’t care, we said that, it is very good.” He also highlighted inconsistencies in the government’s actions, such as barricading and stopping farmers during the langar.

Regarding the inability to perform the last rites of Shubhkaran Singh, Pandher emphasized that talks with the Punjab Government were still ongoing. The farmers’ protest has been temporarily halted for two days following the tragic incident.

In a related development, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait announced a ‘Black Friday’ in honor of the deceased farmer. Union Minister Arjun Munda expressed the Central Government’s commitment to farmer welfare and resolving issues through dialogue. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has also called for inclusive dialogue to address concerns in the agricultural sector. The protests, ongoing since February 13, have seen clashes resulting in injuries to several farmers and police personnel at the Shambhu border near Ambala.

</excerpt>

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait declared on Thursday that farmers participating in protests under the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) will observe a ‘Black Friday’ following the unfortunate death of a farmer at Khanauri Border crossing in Sangrur district, Punjab. Tikait expressed, “We will observe a ‘Black Friday’ tomorrow condoling the death of a farmer at the Khanauri Border crossing in Punjab. We held a tractor march yesterday as well.”

In addition, Tikait disclosed SKM’s intention to organize a tractor march on highways leading towards the national capital. He articulated, “On February 26, we will take tractors to the highway, and towards the way that goes to Delhi. It will be a one-day program, and then we will return. Then, all across India, our meetings will go on. On March 14, there will be a program at Ram Leela Ground in Delhi for one day. People will go without tractors to that event. The government keeps saying that they are not stopping us so let’s see if they will stop us or not.”

Rakesh Tikait, a key figure in the farmers’ protest of 2020-21 that led to the repeal of the three farm laws, underscored the persistence of their agitation. The protesting farmers have temporarily suspended their ‘Dilli Chalo’ protest march for two days to evaluate the ongoing situation on the Shambhu border in Haryana. Further decisions will be made accordingly, according to the general secretary of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee.

While expressing disapproval of the Central Government’s use of paramilitary forces against protestors, Tikait called for government accountability. In response, Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda acknowledged the necessity for sustained efforts from both sides to reach a consensus. He affirmed the government’s commitment to working for the interests of farmers.

The protesting farmers have been stationed at the Shambhu border near Ambala since the start of the protest on February 13, resulting in clashes and injuries to several farmers and police personnel.

Elon Musk has declared its compliance with the Indian government’s instructions to suspend accounts linked to the farmers’ protests, even though it disagrees with these directives. In response to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s emergency blocking orders, which aimed at several social media accounts and posts related to the farmers’ protests, X (formerly Twitter) announced on Thursday its intention to limit specific accounts and posts in line with the executive orders issued by the Indian government.

“The Indian government has issued executive orders requiring X to act on specific accounts and posts, subject to potential penalties including significant fines and imprisonment.
The Global Government Affairs of ‘X also stated that the writ appeal challenging the Indian government’s orders remains pending and they have provided impacted users with notices of these actions in accordance with its policies.

“Due to legal restrictions, we are unable to publish the executive orders, but we believe that making them public is essential for transparency. This lack of disclosure can lead to a lack of accountability and arbitrary decision-making,” it added.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has concluded its orders for the suspension of 177 accounts associated with the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march led by farmers around the national capital. Subsequently, these directives were transmitted to Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, X (formerly Twitter), and Snap by the Centre, urging them to block these accounts in the interest of public order.

MeitY issued these emergency orders in response to a request from the Ministry of Home Affairs on February 14, a day after the initiation of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march. According to sources, the companies were directed to suspend the accounts until February 19 to maintain law and order, after which they could be reinstated.

Earlier in 2022, X’s account with the Pakistan government was withheld in India. This was reportedly the second such incident in recent months. This account was withheld earlier in July 2022 as well but had been reactivated and was visible.

Later in October, based on the inputs from intelligence agencies, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting had directed YouTube to block 45 YouTube videos from 10 YouTube channels. Orders to block the concerned videos were issued on October 23, under the provisions of the Information Technology.

The blocked videos had a cumulative viewership of over 1 crore 30 lakh views. The content included fake news and morphed videos spread with the intent to spread hatred among religious communities. Examples include false claims such as the Government has taken away the religious rights of certain communities, violent threats against religious communities, declaration of civil war in India, etc.

Thakur criticized the UPA government, contending that the Modi-led government has allocated more funds for farmers compared to the UPA’s expenditure during its tenure.

Thakur highlighted the government’s initiatives to curb the increase in fertilizer and urea costs for farmers, providing subsidies totaling Rs 3 lakh crore. He spotlighted the introduction of Nano Urea and emphasized that the Modi government has allocated Rs 18 lakh 39 thousand crores for MSP, surpassing the UPA’s spending by more than 3.50 times.

Illustrating with examples, Thakur pointed out that the Modi government allocated more than Rs 55,000 crore for pulses, in contrast to the UPA’s Rs 1936 crore. He continued to critique the UPA, asserting that during their era, farmers lacked respect and adequate funding.

Thakur drew comparisons in spending on oilseeds, wheat, and compensation under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Beema Yojana, underscoring the Modi government’s proactive measures compared to the UPA’s tenure. He stressed the government’s commitment to farmers and the establishment of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare under Modi’s leadership. Thakur highlighted various schemes and initiatives designed to support farmers and provide financial assistance

</excerpt>

The General Secretary of Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Sarwan Singh Pandher, announced the suspension of the ‘Dilli Chalo’ protest march for two days to assess the situation at the Shambhu border in Haryana. This decision comes after condemning the Central Government’s use of paramilitary forces against protestors and reported injuries to hundreds.

Pandher explained, “After the talks started, the central government ran away from the talks… I did not think that we would be able to succeed. Looking at the entire situation, as the centre has fled.” He further criticized the security forces’ actions, alleging attacks on unarmed farmers and destruction of their vehicles.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s response, Pandher urged farmers and people across the country to protest against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government. He emphasized the need for the government to apologize to the unemployed and called for solidarity across India against the government’s actions.

Pandher criticized the Punjab government and opposition parties for their perceived lack of clarity on the farmers’ demands. He accused the central government of attempting to defame the movement and urged a swift resolution to end the ongoing unfortunate situation.

Regarding potential solutions, Pandher reiterated the farmers’ demand for the Prime Minister’s intervention, proposing talks to make the MSP legal guarantee law and address other concerns. He called for an end to the use of force against farmers and laborers and stressed the importance of finding a happy solution to the issue. Pandher urged the Prime Minister to intervene and resolve all the issues, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution.

</excerpt>

Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda stated on Wednesday that the central government is prepared to address all concerns raised by Punjab farmers and has extended an invitation for a fifth round of talks, emphasizing the need for a resolution through dialogue.

“After the fourth round, the government is prepared to discuss all issues like MSP, crop diversification, stubble burning, and FIR in the fifth round. I once again invite the farmer leaders for discussions,” Arjun Munda told ANI.

“I appeal to them to maintain peace, and we should find a solution through dialogue,” he added.

While the farmers have not responded to the invitation yet, Minister Munda urged them to move forward with the talks.

“No information has been received yet (from the farmers’ side). We appeal to move forward for talks and present our stance. The government also wants to move forward and find a solution,” the Union Minister remarked.

Minister Munda is part of the team of Union Ministers conducting discussions with farmer leaders, which also includes Piyush Goyal and Nityanand Rai.

Earlier in the day, Sarwan Singh Pandher, the general secretary of Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, reiterated the demand for a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) and assured a peaceful approach going forward.

As the ‘Dilli Chalo’ march resumed on Wednesday, Pandher stated that only the leaders would be marching towards the national capital, emphasizing a peaceful approach.

The farmers resumed their march on Wednesday morning after the fourth round of talks ended in a stalemate. On February 19, farmer leaders rejected the Centre’s proposal on MSP purchase, deeming it unfavorable for farmers.

</excerpt>

On Wednesday morning, the Haryana police deployed tear gas shells against protesting farmers at the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu border, who have been demonstrating for their Minimum Support Price (MSP) demand. Equipped with gas masks, bulldozers, and heavy machinery, the farmers continue to oppose the government.

The Haryana police issued a warning to owners of earthmover machines and bulldozers participating in the protest, cautioning them of potential criminal liability. In a statement on X, the police emphasized that these machines could be utilized to harm security forces, constituting a non-bailable offense.

In response to the police’s efforts to halt their march with barricades and tear gas shells, the farmers returned with modified JCB machines, earthmovers, bulldozers, and makeshift gas masks. The government has also taken countermeasures, placing reinforced boulders, loaded buses, trucks, and shipping containers to impede the farmers’ entry into the national capital.

To counter the farmers, the police have deployed bulldozers, while farmers’ leader Sarwan Singh Pandher affirmed their commitment to a peaceful ‘Delhi Chalo’ march. He stated, “Our top leaders will move forward, and the entire world will see us moving ahead peacefully. If the government feels that by killing the farmers their problems will be solved, then it can do so. But we will continue to move forward peacefully.” Pandher emphasized that any violence would be the responsibility of the government.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court criticized the protesting farmers on Tuesday, stating that tractor-trolleys cannot be used on highways, citing the Motor Vehicle Act. The court underscored the existence of constitutional duties alongside rights.

The Haryana Police, on Tuesday, urged their Punjab counterparts to seize bulldozers, citing safety concerns. The ongoing protest by farmers centers around their demand for a legal guarantee of MSP for all crops. Despite the Central government’s offer of MSP on specific crops for the next five years on Monday, the protesting farmers rejected the proposal. The estimated presence at the Shambhu border includes around 14,000 farmers, accompanied by 1,200 tractors and 300 cars.

</excerpt>

Addressing the media at the Shambhu border, farmer leaders Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal called on the government to remove barricades at the Shambhu border, enabling them to march peacefully to Delhi. They expressed their willingness to make sacrifices for the nation, stating, “We are ready to die in the interest of our nation… if any confrontation happens, those who had put up these barricades will be responsible… those who brought in paramilitary, who fired tear gas and rubber bullets at us, they will be responsible for what is gonna happen today,” as articulated by Sarwan Singh Pandher.

Punjab’s agitating farmer leaders are set to resume their ‘Dilli Chalo’ protest at 11 am on Wednesday, demanding a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) on all crops. According to government estimates, around 14,000 individuals, accompanied by 1,200 tractor-trolleys, 300 cars, and 10 mini-buses, have gathered along the Punjab-Haryana border. Concurrently, the Haryana government has extended the ban on mobile internet and bulk SMS services in Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad, and Sirsa until Wednesday.

Previously, farmer leaders rejected the Centre’s proposal to procure pulses, maize, and cotton at MSP by government agencies for a five-year period, asserting that it was not in the farmers’ interest.

The protestors, numbering in the thousands, initiated their march to Delhi on February 13 but encountered a halt at the Haryana border, leading to confrontations with security personnel. Since then, the farmers have maintained a presence at the Shambhu and Khanauri points between Punjab and Haryana.

Organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, the “Delhi Chalo” march is aimed at compelling the BJP-led Centre to fulfill their demands, including a legal guarantee on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops and the waiver of farm loans.

Despite the government’s proposal to purchase moong dal, urad dal, tur dal, maize, and cotton at the MSP for the next five years, the protesting farmer leaders have officially turned down the offer. Jagjit Singh Dallewal, leader of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), asserted that it did not align with the farmers’ interests.

Four rounds of discussions between the farmers and Union ministers on February 8, 12, 15, and 18 have yielded no conclusive results. At the Shambhu border point, farmers have brought excavators to navigate the barricades established by Haryana security personnel, with some carrying masks for protection.

Stringent security measures are in effect, and the Haryana Police has urged their counterparts in Punjab to seize bulldozers and earthmoving equipment, citing a potential threat to security forces. In light of the ongoing agitation, the Haryana government extended the ban on mobile internet and bulk text-message services in seven districts until Wednesday.

Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar underscored the commitment to a peaceful march towards Delhi from the Shambhu and Khanauri border points, emphasizing their intent to remain non-violent. Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher called for a daylong Parliament session to enact legislation on the MSP for crops, outlining three key demands – a legal guarantee on MSP, implementation of the “C2 plus 50 per cent” formula recommended by the Swaminathan Commission, and farm loan waiver. The farmers are also advocating for pension provisions, no increase in electricity tariffs, withdrawal of police cases, justice for the victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence in 2021, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and compensation for families of farmers who lost their lives during a previous agitation in 2020-21.

</excerpt>

The Delhi borders are anticipated to witness renewed tensions starting Wednesday, as farmers in protest have dismissed the government’s proposition of a five-year contract for purchasing maize, cotton, and three types of pulses at the existing minimum support price (MSP).

The announcement from the protesting farmers followed criticism from the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella organization of farmer unions not currently involved in the protests, regarding the MSP proposal.

At a press conference at the Shambhu border, between Punjab and Haryana, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated that the proposal is unacceptable to them, and the protesting farmers will resume their peaceful march towards Delhi on Wednesday.

Providing reasons for rejecting the proposal, farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal explained, “The government made the proposal on Sunday night, and we have studied it. It doesn’t make sense for the MSP to apply to only two or three crops and for the other farmers to be left to fend for themselves.”

He added, “The honorable minister said yesterday that if the government guarantees MSP on pulses, it will put an additional burden of ₹1.5 lakh crore. A study by (former Agricultural Price Commission chairman) Prakash Kammardi has, however, revealed that the total cost will be ₹1.75 lakh crore for all crops.”

Pointing out that the government spends ₹1.75 lakh crore to import palm oil, which he claimed is harmful to health, Mr. Dallewal suggested that the same amount could be used to help farmers grow oilseeds, for which MSP could be declared.

Mr. Dallewal claimed that the government plans to provide support prices only to farmers opting for crop diversification and moving towards crops under the MSP umbrella, excluding farmers already growing these crops.

“We have demanded MSP on 23 crops. The amount that is given is a ‘minimum’ support price, that helps with subsistence, not income. If they are not agreeing to a legal guarantee, it means that the farmers will continue to suffer. We have, thus, decided to reject the proposal,” he said.

Food and Public Distribution Minister Piyush Goyal had announced after the meeting on Sunday that government agencies would sign a contract with farmers for the next five years for the procurement of pulses, maize, and cotton crops, with no limit on the buying quantity.

The core issue for the protesting farmers remains the demand for a law on MSP, along with other demands, such as a loan waiver, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pension for farmers and farm laborers, withdrawal of police cases, and justice for farmers killed in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri.

Concerns arise over potential chaos as nearly 1 lakh farmers, supported by about 200 unions, plan to resume their march on Delhi. Farmer groups in Noida and Greater Noida have also announced plans to march to the capital on Friday, adding to the potential challenges.

</excerpt>

On Saturday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, describing it as a ‘curse’ for the country’s farmers.
Kharge also accused the administration of treating farmers as enemies. Kharge claimed that only the Congress party can guarantee farmers the legal entitlement to a Minimum Support Price (MSP).

“The Modi government is a curse for the country’s food-providing farmers. Due to the continuous false ‘Modi’s Guarantee’, the first 750 farmers lost their lives and now, yesterday, 1 farmer has been martyred and 3 have lost their eyesight due to rubber bullets. The Modi government has treated farmers like enemies, Only Congress will give them the legal right of MSP!” Mallikarjun Kharge said in a post on ‘X’.

The security forces stationed at the Shambhu Border continued to prevent agitating farmers seeking to reach the national capital on Saturday, as the protests entered their fifth day.
Hundreds of farmers and journalists have been hurt as protestors clashed with police repeatedly in an attempt to break through the multi-layered barriers.
The protesting farmers have been camped at border crossings since the March began on Tuesday, February 13.

A third round of discussions with the central government ended in an impasse on Thursday, amid a standoff between protesters and security officers on the Punjab-Haryana border. There will be another round of discussions on Sunday.
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have called for a ‘Delhi Chalo’ march to pressure the BJP-led Centre to adopt their demands.

The farmers have presented 12 demands to the central government, for which they are marching to Delhi. This time, the demonstration has been called by the non-political Sanyukt Kisan Morcha and the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, which is led by farmer union leaders Jagjeet Singh Dallewal and Sarwan Singh Pandher.

According to the protesting farmers, the Centre guaranteed them higher crop prices, therefore they halted their 2021 protest. They want a law that guarantees a minimum support price (MSP) for all crops, as outlined in the Swaminathan Commission report.
They also want a comprehensive debt waiver and a system to pay pensions to farmers and farm workers.

</excerpt>

The General Secretary of Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Sarwan Singh Pandher, called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage in dialogue with farmers and address their grievances. Speaking at a press conference at Shambu Border, Pandher emphasized the need for immediate resolution, stating, “We have said it earlier also. It is not a question of going ahead, we are not saying that we will break your barricade, there are two things, today there is a meeting with the Union Ministers, and we would like the Prime Minister himself to talk to them and these demands should be resolved today. This will be pleasant for everyone.”

He further stressed the importance of peaceful protest in a democratic country, stating, “Secondly, as this is a democratic country, we should be allowed to carry out our movement peacefully in Delhi, this path should be opened by the government itself and the agenda will be the same as we have.”

Highlighting concerns over the handling of protests, Pandher criticized the use of heavy security measures, including para-military forces, and emphasized the unprecedented use of force against farmers. He urged the government to reconsider its approach, stating, “This is the first time that any government of the country has used paramilitary forces against the farmer labour movement, I would like to tell. Tear gas is commonly used, but look at the other ways, smoke cell air bursts are also being utilized, smoke cell ground bursts are also being used and heavy explosion emissions are also being utilized.”

Pandher expressed solidarity with farmers from various states and emphasized the unity of the movement. He dismissed allegations of political affiliations, stating, “We are the farmers and labourers of the country,” and urged all farmers to demand the implementation of MSP guarantee.

The farmers have presented 12 demands to the central government, including guaranteed MSP for all crops, debt waiver, pension schemes, and scrapping of the Electricity Amendment Bill 2020. They also seek justice for the Lakhimpur Kheri killings and compensation for families of deceased farmers.

Several farmer organizations, led by the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, have begun a three-day ‘train blockade’ with several demands, including a cash package for flood-related losses, a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP), and debt forgiveness.

A railway official of the Firozpur (FZR) division said that the services of as many as 18 trains have been hit till now on the first day of the rail blockade agitation. “Of those, 12 trains, which set off from and arrive here have been cancelled and the remaining, long route trains, have been diverted,” he said.

One of the protestors, Dilbag Singh, stated that the call for the three-day agitation was issued a month ago and that the government should provide an urgent response to their demands.

“This (Rail Roko protest) which is going on, was called a month earlier. We want the government to hold talks and provide solutions to our demands,” he said. The protesting farmers are also calling for punishment against Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish Mishra, who is the key accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, which killed four farmers in 2021.

Earlier in the day, at the Amritsar protest, Sarwan Singh Pandher of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee said, “If anyone tries to be unfair to Punjab farmers, farmers from Haryana will also join Punjab farmers.” Farmers across the country are united.”

</excerpt>

Several farmers’ organizations initiated a three-day railway blockade starting on Thursday, in order to emphasize their stance on various urgent demands.

These demands encompass a financial aid package to compensate for losses incurred due to recent floods, a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP), and the forgiveness of agricultural debts.

The decision to implement this railway blockade was announced by Sarwan Singh Pandher, who serves as the General Secretary of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee. This pivotal choice followed a significant gathering of representatives representing 19 different farmers’ groups, as reported by news agencies.

Although the majority of the participating farmer groups hail from Punjab, this movement has gained support from farmers’ organizations in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and other regions.

Pandher informed the media that the farmers are seeking financial relief packages for individuals affected by floods across northern India, a legally binding commitment to the Minimum Support Price for all crop categories, and comprehensive debt forgiveness, among other demands.

The “rail roko” protest will occur at 12 locations in Punjab, including Moga, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Tarn Taran, Sangrur, Patiala, Ferozepur, Bathinda, and Amritsar.

Several farmer organizations supporting this movement include the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Bharti Kisan Union (Krantikari), Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Azaad), Azaad Kisan Committee Doaba, Bharti Kisan Union (Behramke), Bharti Kisan Union (Shaheed Bhagat Singh), Bharti Kisan Union (Chottu Ram), Kisan Mahapanchayat (Haryana), Pagri Sambhal Jatta (Haryana), Progressive Farmer Front (Uttar Pradesh), Bhoomi Bachao Muhim (Uttarakhand), and the Rashtriya Kisan Sangathan (Himachal Pradesh).

Earlier this month, around 100 farmers in Maharashtra’s Sangli district conducted a ‘rail roko’ protest opposing the railways’ land acquisition. This led to a more than four-hour halt of the Kolhapur-Gondia Maharashtra Express in the Bhilwadi-Nandre area of Palus tehsil. The Maharashtra farmers are demanding that the railways acquire their additional land, and discussions with the district administration are ongoing regarding joint measurements for this purpose.
