Speaking at the event “The United States and India: Building Bridges for our People,” he emphasized the depth and significance of the US-India relationship. “It has been one of the personal honors of my lifetime, but I know for our country too, this is one of the greatest relationships our country has ever known,” Garcetti remarked.

Cultural Preservation and Exchange

Highlighting cultural collaboration, Garcetti praised the recent US-India Cultural Property Agreement. This landmark deal aims to curb the illegal trade of cultural artifacts and facilitate their return to India. Since 2016, the US has returned 578 cultural treasures to India, with over half repatriated during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit in 2023.

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti emphasized the immense potential of the US-India partnership, stressing the importance of reducing tariffs and fostering fairer and more equitable trade. Speaking at an event organized by the US-India Business Council (USIBC) on Thursday, Garcetti stated, “We need, together, to lower tariffs, not to see them go up. We need, together, to increase trade and to make it more fair and equal. We need to, together, make sure that there’s training and talent that meets the needs of companies on both sides of the Indo-Pacific.”

He added, “We have to protect our trademarks and our intellectual property, and we have to make sure that transportation and infrastructure exists, for India to reach its goals more quickly, that is in the American interest, and vice versa, in the Indian interest as well. So let us renew our commitment to being more ambitious, to not settling for what is, and what is good, but reaching for what can be and what will be great.”

The Ambassador also praised India’s workforce, calling it “the most extraordinary resources that humanity has on its planet.” Garcetti remarked, “And to realise these ambitions, we must recommit ourselves to a mutual path of trust and transparencies so that people know what to expect. India’s workforce, which numbers more than a billion people, is one of the most extraordinary resources that humanity has on its planet. They are builders, thinkers, innovators and entrepreneurs. The Indian dream is the flip side of what we used to call the American truth. In some ways you see it even more optimistically sometimes than our own country. And we can leave inspired when we work together about what’s possible.”

Garcetti also advocated for merging “American scientific and financial acumen” with “India’s grassroots ingenuity.” He said, “The US and India can create ecosystems that tap into this human capital to merge American scientific strengths in research, our financial acumen and business strategy with Indians’ jugaad finding a solution to everything, your deep talent pools, your grassroots ingenuity and your readiness to scale solutions on a massive level.”

India and US Announce Over $2 Million in Grants for AI and Quantum Tech Research

The India and United States have committed to advancing technology for social good by announcing joint research grants totaling over $2 million. These grants will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum technologies, supporting projects that tackle societal challenges, including cancer detection and breakthroughs in quantum computing.

Collaborative Tech Initiatives for Social Impact

This announcement was made during an event hosted by US Ambassador Eric Garcetti and Seth Center, Acting Special Envoy for Critical and Emerging Technologies. Indian Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, along with other officials, also attended the event. According to a statement from the US Embassy, the grants will support 17 research projects—11 centered on AI and 6 on quantum technologies. Each project will receive close to $120,000.

These initiatives are part of the broader US-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET), aiming to harness technology to address key societal concerns such as AI-assisted cancer detection.

Additional Support for Advanced Materials Research

In addition to the AI and quantum technology grants, a new $1 million US-India Science & Technology Endowment Fund (USISTEF) grant was also announced. This grant will back research on advanced materials and critical minerals, further deepening cooperation between researchers in the US and India across various sectors, including universities and national labs.

US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, discussed the “close friendship” between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden, highlighting how it has contributed to the growing partnership between the two nations. In an interview with ANI, Garcetti described PM Modi as the most pro-American Prime Minister in Indian history and President Biden as the “most pro-Indian president we’ve had in US history.”

“These are two men (PM Modi and Joe Biden) who have such a close friendship, the most pro-American prime minister we’ve ever seen in Indian history, the most pro-Indian president we’ve had in US history and that’s building on people who have been very strong before. I think they are representative of the people in their country, the closeness that we have,” he said.

Garcetti also spoke about the Quad, an alliance between the US, India, Japan, and Australia, calling it a “powerful place” to set a shared vision, uphold principles, and devise solutions for the Indo-Pacific region. “The Quad is a powerful place to set a vision, to share principles and to come up with common solutions in the Indo-Pacific. It’s a contrast to nations that don’t want to play by the rules, don’t believe in the rule of law, but I think we will build solutions. It’s about what we can do proactively and this was a giant step forward,” he said.

He emphasized that the four Quad nations share a vision of a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific, and the forum is focused on addressing common challenges and standing by principles that not every country upholds. During the sixth Quad Summit, hosted by President Biden in Wilmington, Delaware, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese were present.

According to Garcetti, the Quad focuses on cooperation across several areas, including disaster relief and supply chain management. “It’s not about any one nation. It’s really about these four nations and this common vision that there should be a free open, prosperous Indo-Pacific and if you look at the declaration, it underscores that from cooperating together on health care, whether it’s security and making sure our coast guards can act with each other in a way during a humanitarian disaster that can keep our people safe and protected or whether it’s looking at economic development of things like supply chains to make sure no one country can throttle those supply chains in critical minerals,” he said.

He assured that the Quad is not intended to threaten any nation, adding that the collaboration is designed to address shared challenges. “We put a billion dollars together between just US and India to find climate solutions when we have almost 900 million people who are climate-vulnerable in our two countries. So of course, other countries will look in but nobody should feel threatened by the Quad. But the Quad is about standing up for principles that not every country shares. It is about finding solutions to common challenges that not everybody is doing in a multilateral way and I think it is inspiring the world. The Quad doesn’t just work in four countries, we are looking at the entire region and how we can give something to everyone,” he added.

Garcetti clarified that Quad is not a military alliance aiming to project power but is focused on preserving peace and fostering prosperity. “There’s no question that security and peace is the most important thing for any country and for all of our people. So whether it’s the new announcement on Coast Guard integration and having our crews work together or whether it’s the hub to allow some of our military planes and things like that to be able to interoperate, be fixed in each other’s countries that show interoperability to protect our people, but it is not first and foremost, some sort of military alliance looking to project power, it is looking to preserve peace and to make sure that we have prosperity for the entire plan,” he said.

Kamal Kishore, Member and Head of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of India, echoed the need for transparent communication and collaboration between government institutions and the public. NIA may discuss Khalistani terrorist Pannun issue during FBI chief’s visit to India next week

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is getting ready to discuss the case of Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun with the visiting US official, according to sources, as FBI Director Christopher Wray is scheduled to visit India next week. According to sources, Wray’s visit to India is anticipated to include meetings with representatives from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in this country’s capital. At a Wednesday event in Delhi, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti confirmed that FBI Director Christopher Wray will be visiting the country the following week.

On Tuesday, the US ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, claimed that India had led the most successful G20 ever.

“India’s marvellous growth, its rapid rise, its leadership in the world today has demonstrated the most successful G20 we have ever seen,” the US Ambassador said.
Garcetti was addressing the 20th Indo-US Economic Summit “Sharing ideas & Potential for sustainable partnership between India and the US for the next 25 years” organized by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC).

Garcetti while speaking on India-US ties, said: “The goal that we should be establishing, I think, together, is, how can we be more ambitious. Not just settle for another deal, not just settle for, as we’ve done just in the last few months, bringing down the retaliatory tariffs and the trade disputes between our countries. That’s not good enough. I think we need to close our eyes and dream of what this relationship can be like even more than we would imagine today. “

The US Ambassador congratulated India on ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission.
He said: “Congratulations on a marvellous space year here in India. Landing on the dark side of the moon, doing something that only four nations have done before and doing it so beautifully, so reasonably and so successfully. But now we’re looking at commercial space together.”

On Tuesday, the US ambassador reaffirmed how seriously the US takes its connections with Canada and India.
His remarks come amid heightened hostilities between India and Canada after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that India was responsible for the murder of Khalistani agent Hardeep Nijjar.
