Woman with Infant Attacked for Saying ‘Excuse Me’ in English, Here’s Why

A dispute regarding language turned violent in Dombivli on Monday when Poonam Gupta, a resident of Ganesh Shraddha building in old Dombivli, allegedly was assaulted by her neighbours, the Dhoble family, for talking in English.

What Happened?

The scuffle started when Gupta came home with her nine-month-old baby girl and friend, Jyoti Chavan. There was a function at the Dhobles’ place, and their guests were allegedly occupying the entrance. When Gupta told them ‘excuse me’ in English while wanting to go through, it allegedly caused an ireful response from the Dhobles, who demanded she use Marathi.

According to the complaint, the situation spiraled quickly. Jyoti Chavan was reportedly the first to be attacked, followed by Gupta even though she was carrying her infant at the time. Gupta said, “Even after this attack, the police didn’t take it seriously until the video went viral.”

The violence reportedly intensified when Gupta’s husband Ankit arrived to intervene. He was allegedly beaten with a stick by members of the Dhoble family.

Both parties were taken to Vishnu Nagar police station, where preliminary non-cognizable cross-complaints were made, as there were injuries on both sides. “The complainant’s side also retaliated physically, apparently in self-defence,” said an officer.

But with CCTV video of the Dhoble family beating up Gupta, her friend, and her husband appearing online, the police changed their tack. “We have summoned complainant Poonam Gupta to take a new statement,” Senior Inspector Sanjay Pawar said. “If she wants to lodge an FIR, the necessary action will be taken as per her statement.”

Gupta, who is an accountant like Chavan, said that her family is now frightened. She pointed out the police inaction delay, stating that the authorities reacted seriously only after the video became popular on social media.

President Trump Declares English the Official Language of the U.S.

President Donald Trump formally declared English the official language of the United States on Saturday, asserting that it would promote unity in a country defined by international immigration.

In an executive order published by the White House, Trump stated that it is ‘long past time’ to officially designate English as the nation’s language. “A nationally designated language is at the center of a united and cohesive nation, and the United States is made stronger by a citizenry able to exchange ideas freely in one common language,” the document reads.

The order reverses a directive from the 1990s under then-President Bill Clinton, which mandated federal agencies and federal grantees to provide aid to people who are not English speakers. Agencies will still have some leeway in deciding how much language assistance they provide. Nothing in this order… requires or directs any change in the services provided by any agency,” the executive order makes clear. It goes on to say that agency heads are empowered to determine what steps are needed “to fulfill their respective agencies’ mission and efficiently provide Government services to the American people.”

The White House admits that more than 350 languages are spoken nationwide but holds that English has been the country’s official language ‘since the founding of our Republic’. The order points out that basic American documents, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, were originally composed in English.

As of 2019, according to data from the U.S. government, there are almost 68 million people who speak a language other than English at home. Although English is the dominant language, more than 40 million people in the U.S. speak mostly Spanish. Other important languages in the country’s linguistic diversity include large groups of Chinese, Vietnamese, and other Native American language speakers.

Since assuming office, Trump has signed many executive orders that seek to put into action his right-wing agenda. Nevertheless, a number of these orders, especially those that target the cancellation of federal funding authorized by Congress, are being challenged in court.

In his post, the man advised, “A lot of Indian friends are entering the job market, switching jobs, among other things. The biggest advice I have to avoid bad managers and companies is: pick a manager who speaks fully in English. During interviews, pay attention to how your future boss is talking. If you notice one Hindi word or Hindi sentence (frequently to other colleagues), politely decline the job after the call. It will not be worth it.”

He further elaborated, “If a manager doesn’t know English and only knows Hindi/Regional languages, that’s totally fine. But if you get a language mixer, your life will be terrible and you will regret your decision.”

India pushes to adopt English as working language of SCO

India pushed for the use of English as one of the primary working languages of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which has Mandarin and Russian as its official languages.

The Indian initiative to make English a working language has received immense support, as per sources. “This is something that has been heavily emphasised by other members as well, and there is an emerging common understanding.”

Russian and Mandarin languages are also used in the group’s materials. Four Central Asian nations, in addition to Russia and China, are among the SCO’s founding members, and Russian is widely spoken and written.

“During the SCO meeting, the focus will be on promoting English as a language other than Russian and Chinese. With the other members, this point has been emphasised repeatedly. India will lead two working groups: innovation and startups and traditional medicine,” sources said.

India is currently hosting a two-day SCO CFM in Goa, and the most crucial task for the SCO Foreign Ministers is to evaluate the progress of decisions that will be approved at the SCO Summit in New Delhi in July.

With an emphasis on regional, military, and political issues, India won the group’s presidency at the Samarkand summit last year and is currently hosting important ministerial discussions in the lead-up to the SCO summit in July.

The Secretariat of the SCO is in Beijing. The SCO comprises eight member states, such as India and Pakistan, China and Russia, and the Central Asian states Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Bihar: CBSE students appear for class 12th exams amid tight security

On Friday, various locations in Bihar hosted the Class 12 English exam for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Students from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Bailey Road, Patna, were spotted arriving early for their exams with their parents. 564 students registered to take the CBSE examinations at the Kendra Vidyalaya in Patna, Bihar. BK Singh, the principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, said in a statement to ANI: “The exam room had adequate security measures in place, and after inspection, candidates were permitted inside. There were two invigilators present and the students were permitted to enter before the scheduled start time. All CBSE regulations were adhered to.” Earlier on February 15, CBSE Board exams 2023 for classes 10 and 12 started across the country.

Indian users may get to watch YouTube videos in multiple languages by keeping the society of India in mind. Meanwhile, at the ‘Google for India’ event, YouTube announced that the new feature is being tested. The director of YouTube India Ishan John Chatterjee said, “Video is a particularly effective format for sharing health information in ways that are accessible and digestible not only to a professional audience but to everyone. We want to help truly democratize important health information.” Currently, the feature is only available in English, Hindi, Punjabi, and Marathi languages.
