</excerpt>

In a dramatic late-night high-stakes drama, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested former Haryana Congress MLA Dharam Chhokar at the Shangri-La Hotel in downtown Delhi on Sunday. The arrest was connected to a Rs 363 crore money laundering case.

ED officials were tipped off that Chhokar was at Grappa, one of the upmarket bars located on the hotel ground floor. Moving with quick efficiency, ED Joint Director Navaneet Agrawal of the Gurgaon zone rushed to the destination. He chanced upon Chhokar at the bar soon after.

Late-Night Tip-Off Leads ED to Shangri-La Hotel in Delhi

As additional ED officers came and told Chhokar about the seven non-bailable warrants issued against him, he is said to have tried to escape. With the help of his bodyguards, Chhokar sprinted through the hotel lobby towards a waiting car in the portico, setting off a dramatic chase.

ED officials pursued him inside the premises, and in the commotion, Chhokar allegedly attempted to attack hotel staff and ED officials in an attempt to flee. Agrawal was able to intercept and hold him down. The ED team overpowered the former lawmaker and put him inside their official vehicle.

CCTV footage revealed Dharam Chhokar struggling to be arrested despite being pushed into the car. He attempted to flee once more, and ED officials summoned a local constable to provide backup. Chhokar was then taken to the ED office for further questioning.

On Monday, a Gurgaon court sent him to six days of ED custody. Sikander, the son of Chhokar, had also been arrested previously in relation to the same case. Earlier, in July 2023, the ED had confiscated several properties, vehicles, cash, and jewellery worth a few crores belonging to the accused.

Chhokar was an MLA from the Samalkha constituency twice—once in 2009 on a Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) ticket and again in 2019 as a Congress candidate. He did not manage to hold on to his seat in the 2024 election.

Moreover, the arrest marks a crucial milestone in the agency’s continued investigation into one of Haryana’s biggest financial scams. According to sources in the ED, the operation was carefully conceived to ensure minimal disruption and facilitate swift action.

He was accompanied by his wife and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
</excerpt>

Entrepreneur Robert Vadra arrived at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) headquarters for the second day running on Wednesday for questioning in the case of money laundering in regard to a 2008 Haryana land transaction. His wife and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra joined him, providing reassurance before he walked into the ED headquarters following a tight hug with her.

ED Questions Robert Vadra in 2008 Land Deal Case

Vadra, the brother-in-law of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, is under investigation for a land transaction in Manesar-Shikohpur (now sector 83) in Gurugram. The ED is recording his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

On Tuesday, officials questioned Vadra for around five hours. He appeared again on Wednesday as part of the ongoing probe.

The probe surrounds a 3.5-acre land transaction in February 2008 between Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd, in which Vadra was a director at one time, and a company. The company had acquired land from Onkareshwar Properties for ₹7.5 crore. In September 2012, the 3.53-acre land was sold by Skylight to real estate conglomerate DLF for ₹58 crore.

During the original transaction, the state was in the grip of a Congress-majority government led by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Ashok Khemka’s Intervention Led to Scrutiny

The transaction was rendered controversial in October 2012 when IAS officer Ashok Khemka, Director General of Land Consolidation and Land Records-cum-Inspector General of Registration for Haryana at the time, revoked the mutation of the land. He indicated a violation of the State Consolidation Act and a lapse of procedure. His move sent the transaction under national scrutiny and elicited calls for more stringent inquiry.

It was in 2018 when the Haryana Police filed an FIR to bring the formal probe on the deal.

Robert Vadra Terms Probe “Political Vendetta”

Robert Vadra, who has always claimed to be innocent, termed the ED action politically motivated. “I have always been cooperative with the investigative agencies and have provided the humongous amount of documents,” he said, adding, “There has to be a closure to cases which are as old as 20 years.”

The probe is ongoing as the ED is scrutinizing financial transactions involved in the land transaction.

</excerpt>

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday conducted massive raids at George Soros-backed Open Society Foundations (OSF) and its associated entities in Bengaluru. OSF, pushed by US billionaire and hedge fund manager George Soros, has been blamed by the BJP for pursuing actions against the interests of India.

The ED move is in response to a probe into suspected FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) violations by OSF. The authorities suspect that OSF raised Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India in contravention of FEMA regulations.

Since 2016, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has included Open Society Institute (OSI), which is a part of OSF, in the Prior Reference Category (PRC). This classification indicates OSI has to get prior reference from the ministry prior to sending money to FCRA-registered organizations in India.

Funds Received by Indian Companies

Investigators found that the Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF), OSI’s social impact investment arm, transferred nearly ₹25 crore to three Indian companies between 2020-21 and 2023-24.

These companies are:

Rootbridge Services Pvt Ltd (RSPL)

Rootbridge Academy Pvt Ltd (RAPL)

ASAR Social Impact Advisors Pvt Ltd (ASAR)

FDI Suspected to Be a Bypass for PRC Restrictions

SEDF invested in RSPL via compulsorily convertible preference shares. Officials believe that as SEDF was not able to directly make foreign donations to Indian NGOs without MHA clearance, it resorted to other means to circumvent PRC restrictions. “RAPL, incorporated in 2019, received Rs 2.7 crore from SEDF as commission agent services without rendering any services. This suggests RAPL acted as an agent for SEDF to bypass FCRA provisions for funding NGOs in India,” a source disclosed to TOI.

Role of ASAR in the Alleged Diversion of Funds

Investigators believe that SEDF disguised ₹2.9 crore as donations to NGOs, falsely labeling the payments as ‘service fees’ to ASAR, a company incorporated in 2016.

The OSI group also formed an investment firm, Aspada Investment Company (AIC), in Mauritius to make it easy to transfer funds to India. Aspada Investment Advisors Pvt Ltd was formed in Bengaluru to handle SEDF’s investments. Investigators, however, discovered that Lightrock Investment Advisors Private Limited, which currently oversees Aspada, did not know about ₹300 crore of funds SEDF had given to 12 NGOs.

Political Backlash Against George Soros

George Soros is currently facing backlash in the US since Donald Trump’s election as President, making the ED’s move timely. The billionaire hedge fund manager has publicly been a thorn in Trump’s side, resisting him and joining hands with hardline liberal factions.

</excerpt>

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a show-cause notice to Paytm-owner One97 Communications Ltd. (OCL) over alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) between 2015 and 2019. The notice pertains to financial transactions linked to Little Internet Private Limited (LIPL) and Nearbuy India Private Limited (NIPL) before they were acquired by Paytm.

Key Allegations and Financial Details

The notice, received on February 28, 2025, highlights alleged FEMA violations worth ₹611 crore, with the financial breakdown as follows:

OCL transactions: ₹245 crore

LIPL transactions: ₹345 crore

NIPL transactions: ₹21 crore

According to Paytm’s exchange filing, the alleged contraventions involve investment transactions before 2017, when these companies were acquired by OCL.

“Certain alleged contraventions attributable to the two acquired companies pertain to a period when they were not subsidiaries of the company,” the filing stated.

Paytm’s Response and Legal Strategy

Paytm assured that its services remain unaffected and that it is working towards resolving the issue in compliance with applicable laws.

“We are seeking legal advice and evaluating appropriate remedies to address the matter,” the company clarified.

Background on Nearbuy and Little Internet

Nearbuy (formerly Groupon India) was established in 2011 by Ankur Warikoo. In 2015, Warikoo and his management team bought out Groupon India, making it an independent entity.

Paytm later acquired both Nearbuy and Little Internet in 2017, integrating them into its fintech ecosystem.

Regulatory Impact and Future Implications

The ED’s notice is part of ongoing scrutiny of fintech firms for compliance with foreign exchange regulations. While the financial impact on Paytm is yet to be specified, the company remains under regulatory observation.

With legal consultations underway, the fintech giant aims to resolve the matter efficiently, ensuring business continuity for its customers and merchants.

</excerpt>

Sources said on Sunday that the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has summoned businessman Raj Kundra to appear for questioning on Monday in connection with a money laundering case related to pornography. As per agency sources, Kundra has been asked to depose before the investigators at its zonal office in Mumbai at 11 am as part of the ongoing money laundering investigation.
The case is linked to allegations of financial misconduct and laundering of funds generated from the production and distribution of adult content, a controversy that landed Kundra in legal trouble in 2021. The ED suspects that illicit proceeds from the alleged racket may have been funneled through multiple channels, prompting the current operation to gather evidence.
Kundra, husband of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, was arrested in 2021 for his alleged involvement in the creation and distribution of adult content through digital platforms. The case sparked significant attention. Kundra, however, has denied all charges, maintaining that his business activities were lawful.
The ED investigation is reportedly focused on alleged financial irregularities and potential proceeds of crime arising from the pornography racket. The agency suspects that funds generated from the illegal operations may have been laundered through various channels.
Kundra’s questioning is expected to shed light on the financial transactions linked to the case as the investigation intensifies.
ED’s move comes two days after the agency on November 29 conducted search operations at 15 locations, including the residence of Kundra. The searches were conducted in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The searches were conducted simultaneously at various premises associated with individuals and entities connected to the case. This marked a significant step in the agency’s efforts to trace the money trail and uncover potential violations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

</excerpt>

The Delhi High Court has declined to halt trial court proceedings against former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam.

The court has also issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding Kejriwal‘s plea challenging the trial court’s decision to take cognizance of the ED’s prosecution complaints in the excise policy case, citing a lack of sanction.

A detailed hearing is scheduled for December 20, 2024.

This development follows Kejriwal’s recent request to set aside a trial court’s order, arguing that the special judge took cognizance of the chargesheet without the necessary sanction for his prosecution during his tenure as Delhi Chief Minister.

On November 12, the court sought the ED’s response to Kejriwal’s plea challenging the summons issued to him based on the agency’s complaint in the money laundering case. At this stage, the court has refused to stay the trial court’s proceedings in the criminal case.

Kejriwal was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on July 12 in the money laundering case and was released on bail by the apex court in the CBI case on September 13.

Also read: ‘Break-Up Google’, Says US Govt, Tech Giant Pushes Back

The Delhi government implemented the excise policy on November 17, 2021, and scrapped it by the end of September 2022 amid allegations of corruption. The money laundering case stems from a CBI FIR lodged after Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena recommended a probe into the alleged irregularities in the policy’s implementation.

Case Details: Over ₹100 Crore Deposited in Fake Accounts

The case originated from an FIR registered on November 7 at the Malegaon Chawani Police Station in Maharashtra’s Nashik district. The complaint highlighted suspicious deposits exceeding ₹100 crores across 14 accounts newly opened with Nashik Merchant Co-operative Bank (NAMCO Bank), Malegaon.

Jayes Lotan Misal, the complainant, alleged that Siraj Ahmed Mohammad Harun Memon and his associates used stolen identity documents, including those of Misal and his brother Ganesh Misal, to create shell entities and open bank accounts in their names. The accounts were reportedly used for massive financial transactions, including circular transactions worth hundreds of crores, and to make term deposits.

Fraudulent Use of Documents and SIM Cards

According to Misal’s complaint, Siraj Ahmed obtained identity documents from various individuals under the pretense of offering financial aid or employment. These documents were then misused to open fraudulent bank accounts. Siraj Ahmed also acquired new SIM cards in the names of these individuals, which were linked to the fraudulent accounts to maintain control and operation.

Officials said these accounts facilitated large financial transfers, including ₹14 crore, which was funneled through hawala channels under Shafi’s instructions.

ED investigations revealed that Shafi was a key figure directing Siraj Ahmed in establishing and operating the 14 accounts at NAMCO Bank. Shafi allegedly issued instructions for financial operations, including the ₹14 crore hawala transfer.

“Based on this evidence, an LOC was issued against Nagani Akram Mohammad Shafi,” officials stated. His arrest marks a significant development in unraveling the network involved in the cash-for-vote case.

The ED continues its investigation into the case, focusing on the financial trail and other potential collaborators.

Chandrakar and his business partner, Ravi Uppal, have been under house arrest in Dubai since December of last year. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has alleged that the duo bribed former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel with a sum of ₹508 crore. After moving to Dubai in 2019, Chandrakar transformed from his modest beginnings into a major figure in the online betting sector by launching the Mahadev app. Their operations have reportedly grown to include about 30 call centers both in India and internationally, employing around 4,000 panel operators who each managed roughly 200 customers, resulting in an estimated daily revenue of ₹200 crore.

The ED’s chargesheet alleges that Chandrakar’s extravagant lifestyle was financed through these illicit activities, including a lavish wedding in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, in February 2023, where around ₹200 crore was reportedly spent. The event featured performances from 17 Bollywood celebrities, flown in on chartered flights and allegedly paid crores through hawala channels. The investigation continues as authorities work to dismantle the criminal network linked to Chandrakar and Uppal.

Case Background

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed the final report before the court on August 6, following an investigation initiated from a CBI FIR. The case revolves around Group-D appointments in the West Central Zone of the railways, based in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, during Lalu Prasad Yadav’s tenure as railway minister from 2004 to 2009. </excerpt>

In a significant development on October 1, 2024, the Supreme Court of India requested a response from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding a bail plea filed by former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee. This plea is connected to a high-profile case involving alleged irregularities in teacher appointments and has drawn considerable attention due to its implications for political accountability and public trust in educational institutions.

Chatterjee, who has been in custody since July 2022, faces serious allegations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). His arrest stemmed from a broader investigation into a cash-for-jobs scandal where numerous deserving candidates reportedly lost out on teaching positions to those who paid bribes. The Supreme Court’s bench, consisting of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, noted Chatterjee’s advanced age and health issues as factors warranting the ED’s timely response.

The case has been mired in controversy since it first came to light, with the ED’s investigations uncovering staggering amounts of cash and gold linked to Chatterjee’s associates. Notably, in July 2022, the agency recovered Rs 49 crore in cash and Rs 5 crore in jewelry from properties associated with Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide of Chatterjee, which pointed to a larger network of corruption involving various officials from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). This case underscores the challenges of political corruption in India and the potential implications for the current TMC government in West Bengal.

Chatterjee’s legal team, led by senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, argued that he has already served over two years in custody, with the maximum penalty for his charges being seven years. His defense also emphasized that the previous court rulings lacked sufficient evidence linking him directly to the seized cash. Despite these arguments, the Calcutta High Court previously denied his bail request, citing a robust prima facie case against him. This consistent denial reflects the seriousness with which the judiciary is approaching cases of corruption, particularly in public service sectors.

Also read: Bihar: Seven Children Denote Homemade Bomb In Bhagalpur While Playing, Severely Injured

As the Supreme Court prepares for further hearings scheduled for October 17, the ED is expected to submit its response, which could significantly influence the case’s direction. The outcome of this case may not only affect Chatterjee’s future but could also have far-reaching consequences for other politicians and public servants entangled in corruption cases across India.

The ongoing developments highlight the judiciary’s role in tackling corruption and maintaining the integrity of public institutions, particularly in a context where educational opportunities are paramount for the country’s youth. As the public awaits the next steps, this case serves as a crucial litmus test for both the legal framework surrounding corruption and the political landscape in West Bengal.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has uncovered a massive ₹400-crore fraud linked to the online gaming app, Fiewin, involving Chinese nationals. The ED has taken swift action by freezing accounts of some individuals linked to the scam and arresting four Indians who played a role in supporting the foreign perpetrators.

How the Fiewin Fraud Operated

Fiewin, an online gaming app that initially attracted users with promises of easy money through mini-games, deceived users by restricting withdrawals after their accounts accumulated substantial amounts. According to a statement from Binance, the cryptocurrency exchange that assisted in the probe, users were encouraged to top up their in-app balance but soon found themselves unable to withdraw their earnings, thus losing their investments.

The scam saw approximately ₹400 crore being stolen, which was then transferred to various cryptocurrency addresses, ultimately leading to Chinese nationals controlling the operation.

The Role of Recharge Persons

The ED’s investigation revealed that funds from Fiewin’s games were funneled into accounts controlled by “recharge persons” based in India. These individuals, in exchange for a commission, allowed their accounts to be used for money laundering. The stolen money was converted into cryptocurrency and transferred to crypto wallets managed by Chinese nationals.

Binance explained in its statement that the scam was part of a broader cross-border criminal network. The fraudsters used techniques to hide the movement of funds, such as using bank accounts of mules and cryptocurrency wallets, making it difficult to trace the origin of the illicit funds.

Arrests and Accused Involved

The investigation has led to the arrest of several key individuals involved in facilitating the fraud. Among them are Arun Sahu and Alok Sahu from Rourkela, Odisha, who acted as recharge persons. Money collected from online gamers was deposited in their accounts and later converted into cryptocurrency.

Chetan Prakash, an engineer from Patna, was also arrested for his involvement in converting the funds into cryptocurrency. Another accused, Joseph Stalin, a software engineer from Chennai, allegedly helped a Chinese national, Pie Pengyun, by making him a co-director in his company, Studio 21, which was used to facilitate payouts related to the gaming app. This association initially gained the confidence of gamers, prompting them to place larger bets.

Investigative Support from Binance

Binance, which runs the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has been instrumental in assisting the ED with its probe. The exchange revealed that the fraud was conducted using privacy-focused messaging apps like Telegram, making communication between the Indian accused and the Chinese nationals difficult to trace. However, through a thorough investigation, the authorities traced nearly ₹400 crore laundered through eight Binance wallets belonging to Chinese nationals.

Ongoing Investigation

As the investigation continues, the ED and Binance are working together to further unravel the complex web of transactions and individuals involved in the Fiewin fraud. Their combined efforts aim to expose the full extent of the criminal network behind the scheme and hold all responsible parties accountable.

The case has raised serious concerns over the misuse of online gaming platforms for money laundering, and it underscores the need for stricter regulations and monitoring in the sector.

</excerpt>

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a supplementary charge sheet on Tuesday against former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, former deputy CM Tejaswi Yadav, and other accused in the land-for-jobs scam case in the Rouse Avenue Court. Special Judge Vishal Gogne recorded the charge sheet, which named 11 more accused and included 96 key documents.

The accused include Lallan Chaudhary, Hazari Rai, Dharmender Kumar, Akhileshwar Singh, Ravinder Kumar, Late Lal Babu Rai, Sonmatia Devi, Late Kishun Dev Rai, and Sanjay Rai. The court has scheduled the next hearing for August 13 to review the charge sheet and documents.

On July 6, the Rouse Avenue court instructed the ED to file an additional or concluding charge sheet by the next hearing date. The Joint Director of Enforcement appeared in court to provide updates on the investigation.

Former Bihar CM Rabri Devi, along with Misa Bharti and Hema Yadav, and other accused, had already been charged by the ED. ED’s Special Public Prosecutor Manish Jain, along with Ishan Baisla and Snehal Sharda, submitted the supplementary charge sheet and documents.

Previously, the court had urged the ED to finalize the investigation within two weeks. Rabri Devi, her daughters Misa Bharti and Hema Yadav, along with Amit Katyal and Hridyanand Chaudhary, are charged in the case, with all accused except Amit Katyal appearing via video conferencing.

On February 28, the court granted regular bail to Rabri Devi, Misa Bharti, Hema Yadav, and Hridyanand Chaudhary. The court had earlier issued summons to these individuals in January, with Amit Katyal being arrested during the investigation.

Two firms, A K Infosystem and A B Export, are also accused in the case. The ED submitted that A K Infosystem, formed by Amit Katyal in 2006-07 for IT data analysis, did not conduct real business but acquired several land parcels, one of which is central to the scam. This company was transferred to Rabri Devi and Tejaswi Yadav in 2014 for a nominal sum.

The ED filed a prosecution complaint in January 2024, stating that A-B Export, initially set up for export business, received Rs. five crore through five companies in 2007, which was used to purchase a property in New Friends Colony. This case involves seven land parcels, with Rabri, Hema Yadav, and Misa Bharti receiving and later selling these parcels.

The ED’s investigation revealed that the Yadav family benefited from the proceeds of crime. Amit Katyal, a close aide of Lalu Prasad Yadav, was implicated in transactions with the Yadav family. The Delhi High Court refused to quash ED proceedings against Katyal.

In March, the ED conducted searches at 24 locations in Delhi NCR, Patna, Mumbai, and Ranchi, uncovering unaccounted cash of Rs. 1 crore, foreign currency, gold bullion, and jewelry worth approximately Rs. 1.25 crore, along with incriminating documents. The investigation uncovered proceeds of crime amounting to Rs. 600 crore, including immovable properties worth Rs. 350 crore and transactions of Rs. 250 crore routed through various benami entities.

The ED found that multiple land parcels were illegally acquired by the Yadav family in exchange for railway jobs, with a current market value exceeding Rs. 200 crore. These properties were held in the names of family members and benami entities.

One notable property in New Friends Colony, Delhi, registered under M/s A B Exports Private Limited and controlled by Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, was purchased for a mere Rs. 4 lakhs but has a current market value of approximately Rs. 150 crore. The property is suspected to have been acquired using proceeds of crime and is used as a residence by Tejashwi Prasad Yadav.

The investigation further revealed that land acquired from Group-D applicants was sold at a significant profit to ex-RJD MLA Syed Abu Dojana, with the proceeds transferred to Tejashwi Prasad Yadav’s account. The ED’s findings indicate widespread corruption and illegal land acquisitions in exchange for railway jobs during Lalu Prasad Yadav’s tenure.

</excerpt>

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted NCP leader Nawab Malik permanent bail in a money laundering case. The court had previously granted him interim medical bail due to deteriorating health conditions.

A bench comprising Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma made the interim bail absolute, subject to conditions imposed by the special court. The bail will remain in effect until the disposal of Malik’s regular bail plea before the Bombay High Court.

Malik’s counsel informed the court of his client’s severe health issues, including the collapse of one lung. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), represented by Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, did not oppose the conversion of interim bail to permanent bail.

Malik has been in and out of hospital since his arrest in February 2022. The ED accused him of usurping a property in Kurla with the help of Dawood Ibrahim’s sister, Haseena Parkar, between 1999 and 2006. The agency alleges that the proceeds from this property were used to fund terrorist activities.

The NCP leader has consistently maintained his innocence and challenged the ED’s allegations.

This case centers on allegations that snake venom was used at parties reportedly hosted by Elvish Yadav, according to official sources.

Initially slated to appear before the ED in Lucknow this week, Elvish Yadav requested a postponement of his summons citing prior international travel plans and professional commitments. Consequently, the central agency rescheduled his appearance for July 23, where he is expected to depose before the investigating officers.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned popular YouTuber Elvish Yadav to appear before its Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow-based unit on July 23 in connection with a money laundering case linked to a snake venom-rave party incident.

— ANI (@ANI) July 10, 2024

Recently, Rahul Yadav, also known as Rahul Fazilpuriya, a singer from Haryana purportedly linked to Elvish Yadav, was questioned by the ED in connection with the same case. Sources indicate that further questioning of Rahul Yadav may follow in the ongoing investigation.

The ED’s probe focuses on alleged activities involving the generation of illicit funds and their purported use in organizing rave parties or other recreational events. This investigation stems from an FIR and subsequent charge sheet filed against Elvish Yadav and others by the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar district earlier this year.

Elvish Yadav, a controversial figure known for his YouTube content and winner of reality show Bigg Boss OTT 2, had previously been arrested by the Noida police on charges related to the alleged use of snake venom for recreational purposes during parties. The case against him includes multiple charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, Wildlife Protection Act, and sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In November last year, an FIR was filed against six individuals, including Elvish Yadav, following a complaint by People for Animals (PFA), an NGO. The charges primarily involved alleged trafficking of snakes, use of psychotropic substances, and organizing illegal parties. While five snake charmers were arrested and subsequently released on bail, Elvish Yadav was not present during the raid where snakes and suspected snake venom were seized.

The Noida police had filed a comprehensive chargesheet in April, detailing their investigations into the matter, which included evidence related to the alleged illegal activities.

The developments surrounding Elvish Yadav have sparked significant public interest, with the ED’s forthcoming interrogation scheduled to shed further light on the ongoing legal proceedings and the allegations against him.

</excerpt>

The Supreme Court ruled that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) cannot arrest an accused person after a special court has taken cognizance of the complaint.

According to Justices Abhay S. Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan, the ED must request for custody to the appropriate court, which will only grant custody if it is persuaded that detention for questioning is necessary.

The court emphasized that if an accused person appears for further inquiry into the same offence after being summons, the ED must petition to the Special Court for imprisonment. The accused was never placed under arrest pursuant to Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), but the Supreme Court made it apparent that custody could only be approved in the event that it is determined that questioning under custody is required.

This ruling concerned whether an accused person under the PMLA must pass the demanding twin test in order to be granted bail, even in cases when the chargesheet is taken up by the special court.

In a money laundering case, Tarsem Lal, the petitioner, had challenged the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s December 2023 judgement that refused him anticipatory bail.

The accused who comes before the court in answer to a summons will not be required to seek for bail, the Supreme Court said in today’s order.

Senior Lawyer Siddharth Luthra argued on behalf of the petitioner that Section 19 of the PMLA prohibits arrests of anyone who is already named as an accused at the post-complaint stage without an arrest.

He clarified further that since the accused had not been arrested under Section 19 during the investigation, the Special Court would not be bound by the stringent requirements of Section 45(1)(ii) of the PMLA when considering their application for bail or bond, whether interim or final, when the accused appears in response to a summons or warrant.

Following the substantial cash seizure of more than ₹36 crore in Ranchi, Jharkhand, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Sanjiv Lal, the personal secretary to state rural development minister Alamgir Alam, and Lal’s maid Jahangir Alam on Tuesday. They appeared before the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court, which remanded them to six days of ED custody.

On Monday, the ED conducted raids at the residences of both Sanjiv Lal and Alamgir Alam in Ranchi, Jharkhand. As a result, a total cash seizure of ₹35.23 crore was recorded.

Continuing its enforcement action, the ED conducted additional searches at five locations in Ranchi on Tuesday and confiscated approximately ₹1.5 crore from a contractor identified as Rajiv Kumar Singh.

According to reports, the counting process required almost 12 hours and six counting machines to be completed. Additionally, an official communication between the ED and the state government was found along with the cash stash.

The duo was presented in a special PMLA court on Tuesday morning and was remanded to six days of ED custody. During the court proceedings, the ED stated that the secretary of the Jharkhand Minister collected commissions on tenders on behalf of “some influential people.”

The ED further alleged that officials from the rural development department, from “top to bottom,” were engaged in an illegal cash payment nexus. Alamgir Alam, aged 70, distanced himself from Lal’s activities, mentioning that Lal had previously served other ministers in the state government as well.

According to the ED’s remand document, “It is ascertained that Sanjeev Lal takes care of the collection of commission on behalf of some influential persons and plays a pivotal role in managing the tenders and collection of commission from engineers.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the recent cash seizure by the Directorate of Enforcement in Jharkhand, noting that while some applaud the central agency’s actions, others criticize him for curbing corruption and illicit gains.

“Today, mountains of currency notes are being found in the neighbouring state Jharkhand. People are saying “chori ho gaya aur mal pakad raha Modi waha” (theft has taken place and Modi has seized the robbed goods). Now tell me, if I stop their theft, stop their earning, stop their loot, won’t they abuse Modi or not? Despite the abuses, shouldn’t I be doing this work. Shouldn’t I be saving your money,” during his address at a public rally in Odisha’s Nabarangpur today, the Prime Minister stated.

Despite facing criticism for disrupting such activities, PM Modi emphasized the importance of his actions in safeguarding public funds and asked whether he should continue to pursue this work.

Earlier today, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) discovered more than Rs 20 crore at the residence of a domestic worker employed by Sanjiv Lal, the Personal Secretary to Jharkhand Rural Development Minister Alamgir Alam, during raids conducted at various locations in Ranchi on Monday morning.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi criticized the Biju Janata Dal (BJD)-led administration in Odisha, accusing them of obstructing the execution of central government initiatives in the state. He also asserted that the few schemes that were implemented were tainted by corruption.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his dismay at the lack of opportunities provided by the BJD government to the people of Odisha, despite their strength and passion. He criticized the administration for obstructing the implementation of Modi-led schemes and alleged corruption in those that were executed. Furthermore, PM Modi highlighted the neglect of women’s interests by the Odisha government, contrasting it with the financial assistance provided by the central government to pregnant women.

The current administration in Odisha displays a lack of concern for women’s welfare. In contrast, the central government allocates Rs 6,000 to each pregnant woman to ensure essential nutrition for both mother and child. Surprisingly, this scheme has not been implemented by the Odisha government. Conversely, the BJP government is dedicated to women’s empowerment, evident through initiatives like the ‘Subhadra Scheme’ in Odisha aimed at providing financial empowerment to women.

Additionally, under the BJP’s governance, initiatives such as the Van Dhan Kendra Yojana have been launched, reservation benefits for SCs and STs extended for the next decade, and notably, India witnessed its first Adivasi President during this period.

PM Modi further emphasized that the BJD-led state government failed to utilize the funds provided by the Centre effectively. Despite the allocation of Rs 10,000 crore for the Jal Jeevan Mission in Odisha, the government struggled to allocate the funds appropriately. He highlighted discrepancies such as poor road conditions in villages despite funding for road construction and the BJD government taking credit for centrally-sponsored schemes like free rice distribution.

PM Modi urged the audience to reflect on his leadership’s track record, highlighting a fivefold increase in the budget for tribal welfare and the establishment of over 400 Eklavya Model Residential Schools in tribal areas during his tenure. He urged the people to consider giving the BJP an opportunity, promising to address all their concerns and elevate Odisha to the top position within five years. PM Modi assured the audience that their welfare was the BJP’s top priority.

Early on Monday morning, the organisation was able to retrieve a sizable sum of money from Sanjiv Lal, who helps out around the house and is the personal secretary of Jharkhand Rural Development Minister and Senior Congressman Alamgir Alam.

The current inquiry into the case of Jharkhand Rural Development Department chief engineer Virendra K. Ram is connected to this seizure. A sizable sum of money was found in 2019 from one of his subordinates. The case was then turned over to the Enforcement Directorate in accordance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Virendra K. Ram was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in February 2023 in connection with a money laundering case associated with alleged irregularities in the implementation of certain schemes. His apprehension followed multiple searches conducted by the ED on February 21, 2023, in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, and several other locations across Jharkhand, Bihar, and Delhi.

</excerpt>

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s criminal writ petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate was dismissed by the High Court. The court had reserved its decision on February 28. Previously, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding Soren’s plea seeking interim relief in a money laundering case. The Supreme Court bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta listed the matter for the second week of May to hear Soren’s plea. The Supreme Court also mentioned that the Jharkhand High Court could pronounce the order in Soren’s plea challenging his arrest in the money laundering case. The High Court had reserved the order on Soren’s plea on February 28.

Dissatisfied with the High Court’s delay in deciding his plea, Soren approached the Supreme Court and simultaneously sought interim bail. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Soren, informed the Supreme Court that the High Court had not yet passed an order on Soren’s plea challenging his arrest, and requested interim bail in the matter. Earlier, Soren had requested an urgent hearing due to the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.

In February, the High Court had reserved its decision on Soren’s plea challenging his arrest. Soren, through his advocate Pragya Baghel, has contended that his arrest was unwarranted and his remand in the matter was arbitrary and illegal. Soren has termed his arrest as illegal and malafide.

After much speculation and a dramatic sequence of events, Hemant Soren, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Chairperson, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a land scam case in January.

</excerpt>

The Rouse Avenue Court deferred its decision on a petition submitted by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, seeking instructions for Tihar jail officials to administer insulin and permit him to consult doctors via video conferencing daily for 15 minutes due to his severe diabetes and fluctuating blood sugar levels.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja postponed the ruling until April 22, 2024, and instructed Tihar Jail Authorities to provide a detailed response by the following day. Arguments revealed concerns over Kejriwal’s diet, with his legal team denying allegations of excessive mango consumption and asserting that his meals align with dietary guidelines. Kejriwal’s plea highlighted his discontinued ‘Insulin Reversal Programme’ due to his arrest, emphasizing the need for insulin administration and proper medical care.

Additionally, the plea criticized the Enforcement Directorate’s accusations, alleging a lack of fairness and integrity in their conduct. The ED countered, accusing Kejriwal of intentionally consuming foods harmful to his health to gain sympathy in court. They cited medical staff’s regular monitoring of Kejriwal’s blood sugar levels and requested a comparison of his diet chart with actual meals served in jail since April 2, 2024.

</excerpt>

According to an official, the Directorate of Enforcement has temporarily attached properties worth Rs 97.79 crore that belong to Raj Kundra by the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.

The attached properties, as per the ED officials, consist of equity shares, a residential bungalow in Pune, and a residential flat in Juhu.

“Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Mumbai Zonal Office has provisionally attached immovable and movable properties worth Rs. 97.79 Crore belonging to Ripu Sudan Kundra, aka Raj Kundra, under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The attached properties include a Residential flat situated in Juhu presently in the name of Smt. Shilpa Shetty, a residential bungalow situated in Pune, and Equity shares in the name of Raj Kundra,” the ED stated.

The investigation by the ED was prompted by several First Information Reports (FIRs) filed by the Delhi Police and Maharashtra Police against Variable Tech Pte Ltd, Late Amit Bhardwaj, Ajay Bhardwaj, Vivek Bhardwaj, Simpy Bhardwaj, Mahender Bhardwaj, and several multilevel marketing (MLM) agents. It has been claimed that these individuals amassed enormous sums of money in the form of Bitcoins (worth Rs 6600 Crore in 2017 alone) from the credulous public under the pretenses of providing them with a 10% monthly return in the form of Bitcoins.

Investors were expected to receive enormous returns on their cryptocurrency holdings, and the gathered Bitcoins were meant to be used for Bitcoin mining. However, the promoters defrauded the investors, hiding the illicitly obtained Bitcoins in secret virtual wallets, according to the ED.

“ED investigation revealed that Raj Kundra received 285 Bitcoins from the mastermind and promoter of Gain Bitcoin Ponzi Scam, Amit Bhardwaj for setting up Bitcoin mining farm in Ukraine. The said Bitcoins were sourced from proceeds of crime collected by Amit Bhardwaj from gullible investors. Since the deal didn’t materialise, Kundra is still in possession and enjoyment of 285 bitcoins, which are presently valued at more than Rs. 150 Crore, the ED stated.

Three people were taken into custody in this matter following several search operations that were conducted earlier: Simpy Bhardwaj on December 17, 2023, Nitin Gaur on December 29, 2023, and Nikhil Mahajan on January 16, 2023. According to the ED, they are all currently detained by the courts.

“The main accused, Ajay Bhardwaj and Mahendra Bhardwaj are still absconding. Earlier, ED had attached properties worth Rs 69 crore. The Prosecution Complaint in this was filed on 11.06.2019 and Supplementary Prosecution Complaint on 14.02.2024. The Hon’ble Special PMLA Court has taken cognizance of the same,” the ED stated.

Investigations are still being conducted further.

</excerpt>

The Delhi court extended Manish Sisodia’s judicial custody, the leader of the AAP and a former deputy chief minister, till April 26 linked with money laundering case involving the purported excise policy scandal. Following his earlier extension of judicial detention, Sisodia made an appearance before Rouse Avenue Court Special Judge Kaveri Baweja.

The court announced that it will continue hearing Sisodia’s bail plea on April 20. Judge Baweja listened to arguments from Sisodia’s counsel and the representatives of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Previously, the ED accused Sisodia and other defendants of delaying the trial.

Sisodia’s counsel, Mohit Mathur, filed his bail application, citing a delay in completing the probe and asserting the absence of evidence linking his client to the alleged bribe money. Mathur emphasized that the purported proceeds of crime did not result in any loss to the exchequer or private consumers. He highlighted the delay in the trial, citing a six-month-old Supreme Court order permitting Sisodia to approach the court, indicating that the investigation should have concluded by now.

Drawing attention to the bail granted to another accused, Benoy Babu, Mathur argued for Sisodia’s release, noting that he no longer holds a position of influence. He underscored that Sisodia meets the triple test for bail, as outlined by the Supreme Court, and advocated for a swift trial. Mathur asserted that Sisodia’s eligibility for bail is evident, considering the fulfillment of all necessary conditions and the absence of any misuse of liberties, following the Supreme Court’s guidelines. The CBI counsel had previously informed the court that the investigation was at a critical juncture and releasing Sisodia on bail might hinder the ongoing probe.

</excerpt>

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is set to appeal to the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court’s decision to dismiss his plea challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Excise Policy money laundering case, as per sources on Tuesday. The Aam Aadmi Party reportedly disagrees with the Delhi High Court’s ruling.

The Delhi High Court had ruled on Tuesday that Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate was lawful and could not be considered “illegal.” Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma’s bench stated that the ED had sufficient evidence to justify Kejriwal’s arrest, citing his failure to cooperate with the investigation and the delays caused by him, which also affected individuals in judicial custody.

Based on the material collected by the Enforcement Directorate, it was revealed that Arvind Kejriwal allegedly conspired and actively participated in the use and concealment of proceeds of crime. The ED’s case indicated his involvement both in his personal capacity and as the convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party.

The court emphasized that the legality of Kejriwal’s arrest and remand should be evaluated according to the law and not based on the timing of elections. The court dismissed Kejriwal’s argument challenging the timing of his arrest before the general elections, stating that there was no malice on the part of the ED.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with the excise policy case. The trial court subsequently remanded him to judicial custody until April 15, 2024. The ED alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was the primary beneficiary of the proceeds of crime generated in the alleged liquor scam and that Kejriwal was directly involved in formulating the excise policy.

The case revolves around alleged irregularities and money laundering in framing and implementing the Delhi Excise Policy 2022, which was later scrapped.

Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma, presiding over the bench, noted that the ED had sufficient evidence to justify Kejriwal’s arrest. Kejriwal’s failure to cooperate with the investigation and the delays caused by him were also affecting others in judicial custody.

According to the material collected by the ED, Kejriwal was allegedly involved in a conspiracy and actively participated in the use and concealment of proceeds of crime. The ED’s case indicates that he was involved both in his personal capacity and as the convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The court emphasized that Kejriwal’s arrest and remand should be evaluated according to the law and not based on the timing of elections. The court dismissed Kejriwal’s argument that his arrest before the general elections lacked justification in the absence of any malice on the part of the ED.

Kejriwal had alleged in his plea that the ED had failed to prove at the time of his arrest that he was guilty of the activities specified under Section 3, such as concealment, possession, acquisition, or use of proceeds of crime.

Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21 in connection with the excise policy case. The trial court later remanded him to judicial custody until April 15, 2024. The ED has alleged that the AAP is the primary beneficiary of the proceeds of crime generated in the alleged liquor scam and that Kejriwal was directly involved in formulating the excise policy.

The case revolves around alleged irregularities and money laundering in the framing and implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy 2022, which was subsequently scrapped.

Although Kejriwal’s name was not mentioned in the FIRs registered by the ED or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Delhi excise policy case, it first appeared in the ED’s chargesheet. The agency claimed that Kejriwal had a video call with one of the main accused, Sameer Mahendru, and instructed him to continue working with co-accused and AAP communications-in-charge Vijay Nair.

Nair was one of the first individuals arrested by the CBI in 2022. Following this, former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh were also arrested in connection with the case. However, Singh was granted bail by the Supreme Court last week.

</excerpt>

The Rouse Avenue court in the national capital rejected Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha’s detailed interim bail application on Monday, which she filed citing her minor son’s school examinations.

Kavitha is currently in judicial custody following her remand by the ED in the excise policy case. The interim bail plea was dismissed by Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, though a comprehensive bail order is still pending upload.

The ED opposed Kavitha’s bail plea, alleging that she tampered with evidence on her phone and coerced witnesses into retracting their statements. Despite Kavitha’s plea for bail due to her son’s exams, the court sided with the ED’s arguments.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kavitha, argued that exceptions under Section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) should apply to her as a woman. Singhvi emphasized the emotional support needed for Kavitha’s minor child during the exams.

However, advocate Zoheb Hossain, the special counsel for ED, countered these arguments, presenting evidence of Kavitha’s involvement in destroying evidence and influencing witnesses.

Hossain highlighted instances where Kavitha deleted data from her phone and tampered with multiple devices. He argued against granting interim relief to Kavitha, citing the ongoing investigative efforts and the risk of her influencing the probe.

Additionally, the ED counsel referred to statements made by Arun Pillai, indicating further complications in the case.

</excerpt>

Aam Admi Party (AAP) leader Atishi criticised the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday and said that no transactions have been established by the central agency but it still held its party leaders.

She accused the BJP of filing fake cases against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal through the use of central agencies like ED, the Central Bureau of Investigation, and the Income Tax and Election Commission.

Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva hit back at her allegations and stated that many layers are coming out in the alleged liquor scam.

“ED has been investigating the money trail in this so-called liquor scam. ED is still investigating the money trail linked to any leader of AAP, but they didn’t get a single penny of proceeds from crime from any AAP leader.” the Delhi education minister in today’s press conference said.

Arvind Kejriwal, was apprehended by the ED in connection with the alleged Delhi excise policy scam case on March 21, has been sent to judicial custody until April 15. He is currently held in Tihar jail.

“The Supreme Court has continuously asked ED, where is the money trail linked to AAP?… But ED has no answer for this. Justice Sanjiv Khanna says the money trail has not been proven, it’s debatable. But many AAP leaders have been arrested under this case even after no money trail,” Atishi said.

The AAP leader remarked that the BJP should not hide behind the central agencies and fight the elections but instead should compete on the basis of their performance.

“BJP files all kinds of false cases against AAP & its leader, Arvind Kejriwal, through agencies under them like the ED, CBI, I-T and Election Commission of India. The case of Goa was also similar when the ECI sent a notice to Arvind Kejriwal on the complaint filed by the BJP. But, yesterday, the Goa Court dismissed the case, citing it as baseless,” she alleged.

“I want to say to the BJP that if they want to face AAP politically, then they shouldn’t try to fight the elections by hiding behind the agencies. If you have the courage, then come forward and fight the elections based on your work,” the AAP leader said.

Virendraa Sachdeva said, “Many layers are being unfolded in the liquor scam. When CBI will interrogate (BRS leader) K Kavitha, I think many things will come out, many more faces will be unmasked…”

The case is connected with the alleged irregularities and money laundering in framing and implementing the Delhi excise policy 2022, which was later scrapped.

</excerpt>

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached movable assets valued at Rs 24.41 crore belonging to various individuals, entities, and firms associated with the absconding accused Vinod Khute, who is the owner of the VIPS Group of Companies and the Global Affiliate Business company based in Pune, according to the agency’s Friday announcement.

The assets, as reported by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), consist of balances in 58 bank accounts totaling Rs 21.27 crore and deposits amounting to Rs 3.14 crore. The ED’s Mumbai Zonal Office has acted in accordance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) of 2002.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched an investigation following First Information Reports (FIRs) filed by Bharti Vidyapeeth Police Station, Pune, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. The FIRs were against Vinod Tukaram Khute, Santosh Khute, Mangesh Khute, Kiran Pitamber Anarase, Ajinkya Badadhe, and others unknown for defrauding the public and orchestrating a criminal conspiracy. They enticed people with a Ponzi scheme and forex trading, promising high returns, and consequently amassed over Rs 100 crore in the accounts of numerous fictitious and fraudulent firms, entities, and companies.

The probe agency’s investigation has uncovered that Vinod Khute, currently absconding and believed to be residing in Dubai, is the key figure behind a range of illicit activities, including crypto exchange, wallet services, and forex trading, all operated through the Dubai-based company, Kana Capital Limited.

The investigation uncovered that Vinod Khute founded several firms, such as VIPSWALLET Pvt. Ltd., VIPSTRADE Finance Private Limited (VTFPL), Kana Capitals Limited, Global Affiliate Business (GAB), VIPS Securities, and VIPS Properties, among others, to engage in unauthorized financial operations.

“Further, funds were collected from investors and routed through shell companies and dummy accounts to conceal the illicit nature of the transactions,” stated the ED in a statement.

“Later, funds were transferred out of India to Dubai through hawala operators, in exchange for cryptocurrency such as USDT, to evade regulatory scrutiny and facilitate money laundering. The proceeds of crime (more than Rs 100 crore quantified as per the investigation conducted so far) have been utilized by Vinod Khute for his personal use, running day-to-day affairs of his companies, acquiring properties in Dubai as well as in India, etc.”

</excerpt>

Following Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh’s release on bail by the Supreme Court, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized the BJP, alleging misuse of central agencies to suppress opposition leaders. She further stated that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been transformed into the Extortion Department of the BJP.

Priyanka Chaturvedi said, “I welcome the decision of the Supreme Court. This shows that the BJP is misusing the central agencies to suppress and politically arrest opposition leaders. Sanjay Singh has got bail and he can get involved in his party affairs also. Enforcement Directorate has knelt down before BJP. ED has been reduced to the Extortion Department and an Extended Department of the BJP.”

Additionally, she mentioned that once he is released, he will express his perspective to the public.

“The BJP is afraid that it won’t cross 200 seats so it is using ED to arrest opposition leaders. CM Arvind Kejriwal has been elected by the people twice by a huge mandate. In Punjab the AAP is running a government. He is running the party since last 10 years and won two important states and still he is being treated in this way. Constitution does not stop him from performing his duties as CM,” she further said.

Earlier in the day, a bench led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna instructed the release of Sanjay Singh on bail while the trial in the money laundering case concerning irregularities in the excise policy is ongoing.

ED notified the apex court that it had no opposition to Singh being granted bail. The court noted that Sanjay Singh had spent six months in custody. He was detained by the Enforcement Directorate on October 4, 2023, in connection with the case. According to the ED, Sanjay Singh was accused of establishing a special purpose vehicle to launder the proceeds of crime linked to business resulting from the policy alterations, as allegedly plotted by him and his co-conspirators.
