</excerpt>

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Lucknow, searches on Thursday (April 24) at seven premises in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida), Delhi, and Haryana’s Gurgaon in the FIIT-JEE case showed that around ₹206 crore were raised from students of operational batches on the false promise of offering educational services, which were never provided, ED officials confirmed here on Saturday.

Funds Diverted, Faculty Unpaid, Centres Shut Down

“The collected funds were allegedly diverted for personal and unauthorised use, while faculty salaries remained unpaid. Consequently, 32 coaching centres at Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Meerut, Noida, Prayagraj, Delhi, Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore Faridabad, Gurugram, Mumbai etc. were abruptly shut down, causing widespread distress to students and parents,” a senior ED official said.

These searches were conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, senior ED officials added. Officials further added that the ED launched its investigation based on several First Information Reports (FIRs) filed across Lucknow, Noida, Delhi, Bhopal, and other places against FIIT-JEE and its top management.

Top FIIT-JEE Management Under Scanner

Searches were conducted in the homes of director DK Goel, CEO, COO, and CFO, and on the official grounds of FIIT-JEE Coaching Institute, according to the ED officials in a press note put out to the media.

The officials added that the FIRs accused the top management of FIIT-JEE of charging hefty fees from students and parents in the name of offering quality educational services but instead indulging in massive financial fraud, criminal breach of trust, and educational malpractice by not delivering the promised educational services.

Massive Fee Collections Revealed by ED

In the course of the search action, information on Proceeds of Crime (POC) came to light, such as the overall number of students from whom fee was received.

“The fees of around ₹181.89 crore were collected from 9823 students in the academic year 2025-2026. Similarly, ₹47.48 crore were collected from 3316 students for the academic year 2026-2027, ₹17.07 crore were collected from 1008 students for the academic year 2027-2028 and ₹3.76 Crore were collected from 264 students for the academic year 2028-2029. The total amount of ₹250.2 crore crom total students 14,411 was collected,” a senior ED official explained.

Seizures and Ongoing Investigation by ED

The ED officials informed that some incriminating documents and digital equipment were also seized, which point towards serious financial irregularities during the search. Additional preliminary examination of the evidence gathered during search action points towards a well-planned design to divert funds, thus defrauding students and their parents in the name of educational services.

During the search cash amounting to ₹10 Lakh and jewellery valued at ₹4.89 crore were seized, officials informed. Investigation is underway.

</excerpt>

Amid ongoing ruckus over the ED filing a prosecution complaint against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case, Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday asserted that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) must be “abolished” since departments including Income Tax already exist to tackle economic offences.

“In my understanding, a department like ED must be abolished. I will ask Congress to ask for the same thing. There are several institutions that look into economic offences. Having ED means that you are not even trusting your own organisations like the Income Tax department or GST,” Akhilesh Yadav, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, said in a press conference.

विपक्ष के ख़िलाफ़ ED की Negativity को देखते हुए ED के बीच में N लगाकर उसको END कर देना चाहिए। pic.twitter.com/jav0xLxvhG

— Akhilesh Yadav (@yadavakhilesh) April 16, 2025

He stated that many parties had opposed the establishment of ED during the Congress’ tenure, telling them that it might cause them trouble in the future. He added that leaders who spoke against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra had to face investigative agencies.

“The Congress itself made this ED law. At that time, many parties opposed it, telling Congress that you were bringing such a law that could ultimately cause trouble to you. Any leader who was against the BJP in Maharashtra faced ED, CBI, and the income tax department,” Yadav added.

Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday criticised the BJP-led government, accusing it of targeting the Congress party to cover up its failures. This follows the Enforcement Directorate’s prosecution complaint against Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and others in the alleged National Herald money laundering case.

Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that the BJP-led government’s economic mismanagement was spiralling out of control and said there was no vision or solutions, only attempts to divert attention from its mistakes.

Taking to social media, X, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote, “Your despotic Sarkar is hell-bent on targeting the Congress to whitewash its own sins. BJP’s economic mismanagement is spiralling out of control. Desperation is gathering steam. No vision, no solution, only diversion!”

On Tuesday, the ED filed a prosecution complaint (chargesheet) in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court against Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Sam Pitroda, Suman Dubey and others, including several firms. The matter has been listed for arguments on cognisance in the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court on April 25.

</excerpt>

The Enforcement Directorate has levied a fine of over Rs 3.44 crore on BBC World Service India for alleged violations of foreign direct investment (FDI) regulations, officials confirmed on Friday.

Additionally, the agency imposed penalties exceeding Rs 1.14 crore each on three directors through an adjudication order against the British broadcaster under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The proceedings were initiated after a show-cause notice was issued on August 4, 2023, to BBC WS India, its directors, and its finance head for multiple regulatory infractions.

BBC WS India, which operates entirely on foreign direct investment, provides news and current affairs content via digital platforms. However, according to official sources, the company failed to comply with government regulations by maintaining 100 percent FDI instead of reducing it to the mandated 26 percent.

As per Press Note 4 issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on September 18, 2019, digital media entities are required to limit FDI to 26 percent under the government approval route.

The total financial penalty on BBC WS India stands at Rs 3,44,48,850, along with an additional daily fine of Rs 5,000 from October 15, 2021, until compliance is met, for violating provisions of FEMA, 1999.

The three BBC directors—Giles Antony Hunt, Indu Shekhar Sinha, and Paul Michael Gibbons—have been individually fined Rs 1,14,82,950 for their role in overseeing operations during the period of non-compliance.

</excerpt>

A special designated Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Jammu has taken cognisance of a prosecution complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against several individuals accused of operating a narco-terrorism module linked to funding Hizbul Mujahideen’s subversive activities, officials said on Wednesday.
The accused named in the prosecution complaint include Arshad Ahmed Allaie and Abdul Hamid Allaie (both residents of Shopian), Fayaz Ahmed Dar (Anantnag), Fayaz Ahmed Digoo (Pulwama), Laddi Ram (Kathua), and others.
According to the ED, Mohd Altaf, acting on instructions from Pakistan-based terrorists and handlers, received drugs smuggled across the border. Arshad Ahmed, Fayaz Dar, Fayaz Digoo, and Abdul Hamid processed, distributed, and provided these drugs to Laddi Ram, who sold them in Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. The proceeds, amounting to crores of rupees, were remitted back to Arshad.
“Arshad Ahmed Allaie, under the guise of operating a second-hand car dealership, laundered the proceeds of crime (POC) and routed them to terrorists linked to Hizbul Mujahideen,” ED officials explained. These funds were directed to Mohd Latief Dar of Kulgam and Mohd Shafi Bhat of Anantnag to finance terrorist activities.
An investigation into bank account transactions revealed significant cash deposits, disguised through multiple interconnected transactions, concealing the true source of the funds obtained through drug sales.The ED previously arrested key figures in the case, including Arshad Ahmed, Fayaz Ahmed Dar, and Laddi Ram, who are currently in judicial custody.

The ED launched its investigation based on an FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, which charged M/s Sai Construction and Builders, Ghaziabad, its partners, and others under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, in connection with an alleged loan fraud.

According to the release, the ED’s probe revealed that Rajeev Tyagi, along with his wife Meenu Tyagi, through their partnership firm M/s Sai Construction and Builders, Ghaziabad, engaged in a “criminal conspiracy” with associates and guarantors. They reportedly secured loans and financial facilities from Corporation Bank (now Union Bank of India following its merger) by submitting forged documents and inflated valuation reports of mortgaged properties, intending to deceive the bank.

The investigation further disclosed that the loans and financial facilities obtained from the bank were allegedly layered, diverted, or siphoned off through the accounts of Tyagi or those of his associates and entities. The funds were then used for purposes other than what was intended, leading to a default on loan repayments and significant losses for the public sector bank.

The ED stated that further investigation into the matter is ongoing.

</excerpt>

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached assets valued at Rs. 294.19 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, in a high-profile case involving M/s Sunstar Overseas Ltd. (SOL) and its former directors.

The attached assets, spread across various locations, include lands, buildings, flats, and fixed deposit receipts (FDRs).

The investigation by ED was initiated following an FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), Chandigarh, against the company and its ex-directors, Rohit Aggarwal, Manik Aggarwal, Sumit Aggarwal, among others. The FIR charged them with multiple offenses under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including fraud, criminal misappropriation, criminal breach of trust, and cheating. As per the ED, the fraudulent activities resulted in a wrongful loss exceeding Rs. 950 crore to a consortium of nine lender banks.

According to the ED’s investigation, the total admitted claims against the said company amounted to Rs. 1274.14 crore. However, the entity was acquired through the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) for a mere Rs. 196 crore by a resolution applicant, M/s Umaiza Infracon LLP, represented by Ajay Yadav. Notably, M/s Umaiza Infracon LLP has been identified as a shell entity, lacking any substantial funds of its own, raising suspicions about the legitimacy of the transaction.

During the investigation, ED conducted extensive searches under the provisions of PMLA in January 2024. Subsequently, in July 2024, the agency arrested three key individuals, Rakesh Gulati, Paramjeet, and Ajay Yadav, who were allegedly involved in the conspiracy and the diversion of loan funds. These individuals reportedly orchestrated the entire operation to regain control of the insolvent company’s business from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

The assets provisionally attached by the ED include 72 acres of land and buildings (including agricultural land) valued at Rs. 210.6 crore located in Sonipat, Amritsar, and Gurugram. The attached properties also comprise two residential houses in Civil Lines, Delhi, covering over 5,000 square meters and worth Rs. 77 crore, four flats in Karnal valued at Rs. 1.54 crore, as well as a bank balance of Rs. 1.27 crore and FDRs worth Rs. 3.78 crore.

The ED has stated that further investigation into the case is ongoing, as the agency continues to unravel the intricate web of financial transactions and identify additional assets potentially linked to the fraudulent activities.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Mumbai Zonal Office, took into custody Purushottam Chhaganlal Mandhana, the former Chairman and Managing Director of M/s Mandhana Industries Limited (MIL), which has since been liquidated.

The arrest was made under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The case pertains to allegations of bank fraud involving MIL and several other entities.

Officials stated that Purushottam Mandhana was presented before a Special Court on July 19, where he was granted custody to the ED for a period of 6 days.

According to a press statement by ED officials, the agency launched an investigation following an FIR filed by CBI, BS & FB, Mumbai against MIL (now GB Global Ltd), Purushottam Mandhana, Manish Mandhana, Biharilal Mandhana, and others. The complaint, lodged by Bank of Baroda, alleges a consortium of banks was defrauded of ₹975.08 Crore.

‘MIL and its directors hatched a criminal conspiracy to cause loss to banks and corresponding wrongful gain to themselves by diverting loan funds through fraudulent transactions and circular trading. CBI has not filed the charge sheet in the case. But the ED investigation revealed that Purushottam Mandhana has hatched a criminal conspiracy along with other directors of the company and caused a wrongful loss to the banks for personal enrichment’ an ED official stated.

According to the ED’s report, Purushottam Mandhana allegedly had a hidden agenda, establishing multiple fictitious entities under his employees’ names. These entities were purportedly utilized to layer funds belonging to MIL, including loan funds.

ED in its written response said that the applicant (Kejriwal) is involved in the commission of grave economic offences.

The ED further stated that there is ample evidence on record to link the applicant to the commission of the offence of money laundering, and his release on bail would adversely affect further investigation to unearth the deep-rooted multi-layered conspiracy, the ED said.

Meanwhile, the court on Friday deferred the arguments for June 14, after noting that ED had served the reply copy to Arvind Kejriwal’s lawyer just at 1 pm.

Recently, the same court dismissed the interim bail plea moved by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seeking seven days bail citing medical reasons, in the Excise Policy money laundering case.

The matter relates to alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and execution of the Delhi government’s now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22.

Special Judge Rakesh Syal has granted the Enforcement Directorate (ED) time to respond to this application, with the decision made on Wednesday.

Siddiqui, represented by advocate Hemant Shah, has applied, whereas the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a charge sheet against four individuals and a company in this case. A previous notice had been issued regarding this matter, and it is now scheduled for a hearing on June 3. It is stated that his mother is ill and needs hospitalization.

ED has filed charges against four individuals: Zeeshan Haider, his partnership firm Sky Power, Javed Imam Siddiqui, Dawood Nasir, and Kausar Imam Siddiqui. It accused them of money laundering in connection with the purchase and sale of property valued at Rs. 36 crores, allegedly orchestrated by AAP MLA Amanat Ullah Khan. Reportedly, the property was bought with illicit funds, and Amanat Ullah Khan personally delivered Rs. 8 crores in cash.

In response to a query about Amanat Ullah Khan’s involvement, the ED’s counsel stated that the investigation concerning the roles of other accused individuals is still ongoing.

Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Manish Jain presented allegations of irregularities in the Delhi Waqf Board, detailing the involvement of the main accused, Amanat Ullah, in corrupt practices. The charges include misappropriation and siphoning of funds, with Rs. 100 crore worth of property misappropriated, and jobs provided improperly.

</excerpt>

The Delhi High Court has revoked a transfer order for a case, citing bias as the reason. It has instructed that no case should be transferred without first seeking and taking into account feedback from the relevant judge.

Additionally, the High Court has given instructions to all Principal District and Sessions judges. This decision came after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) contested the case transfer.

On Tuesday, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma revoked the transfer order and sent the case back to the Principal District and Sessions Judge at the Rouse Avenue court. This decision pertains to the Bhushan Steel Money Laundering Case, which was moved from the judge who reportedly made comments to court staff regarding bail in ED cases.

“This Delhi HC thinks that there were no sufficient reasons to transfer the matter from the concerned learned Special Judge to another learned Judge, without calling for comments from the learned Trial Judge.”

“Given the foregoing discussion, this Court is inclined to set aside the order dated 01.05.2024,” Justice Sharma ordered on May 28.

Justice Sharma stated that a judge’s casual remark to a staff member who isn’t involved in decision-making or has any stake in case outcomes can’t be used to suggest bias in a similar case, clarifying that such comments shouldn’t lead to allegations of partiality.

In this case, even if the alleged words were spoken by the learned Special Judge, there’s no clear bias toward the respondent or undue favoritism to the prosecuting agency. The context and specific case related to the alleged comment remain unknown, minimizing any real apprehension of bias.

The Delhi HC has set guidelines for principal district and session judges on handling transfer applications. The court mandates obtaining comments from the judge whose bias is alleged, considering these comments alongside principles of real apprehension of bias, and evaluating attending circumstances before deciding on such applications.

</excerpt>

Purshottam Chavan, a key figure in the alleged Rs 263 crore Income Tax Refund (ITR) fraud case, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday. The arrest was made under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, for his involvement in the possession of part of the Proceeds of Crime (POC). Chavan, who is the husband of a senior IPS officer from Maharashtra, was produced before a special PMLA court and remanded to ED’s custody until May 27.

While the ED has not found evidence implicating the IPS officer in assisting her husband, she had played a crucial role in apprehending suspects in the ‘Bulli Bai’ app or Clubhouse cases in 2022, involving the posting of images of Muslim women and sharing objectionable content in chatrooms.

Prior to Chavan’s arrest, the ED had already apprehended four individuals in connection with the fraud case. These included former Income-Tax officer Tanaji Mandal Adhikari, Bhushan Patil, and Rajesh Shetty, who are in judicial custody, and Rajesh Brijlal Batreja, who is in ED custody. Adhikari, arrested by the Central agency last year, is alleged to have orchestrated fake Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) refunds amounting to Rs 263 crore during his tenure at the I-T Department’s Mumbai office.

The ED’s investigation stems from an FIR registered by the CBI, Delhi, against Adhikari and others for fraudulently issuing TDS refunds from the Income Tax department. The agency revealed that Chavan and Rajesh Batreja were in regular communication, exchanging incriminating messages related to hawala transactions and diversion of proceeds of the crime.

In a related development, the ED conducted raids at Chavan’s residence and seized several property documents, foreign currency, and mobile phones. The agency alleges that Chavan attempted to obstruct the investigation by destroying evidence. The ED has already seized and attached immovable and movable properties worth Rs 168 crore belonging to the accused in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

</excerpt>

The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on a plea by former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren seeking interim bail in a money-laundering case, enabling him to campaign in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta also instructed the federal probe agency to submit a concise reply on Soren’s plea against his arrest, scheduling the matter before a vacation bench on May 21. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Soren, emphasized that if granted interim bail, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader would surrender on June 2.

“There is no material against me in the case. Elections will be over if not granted interim bail,” Sibal stated. Sibal and senior advocate Arunabh Chowdhury, also representing Soren, reiterated that the JMM leader neither possesses the land in question nor has any involvement in the matter.

Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, representing the ED, noted that Soren was arrested earlier and has not contested the rejection of his regular bail application.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal for Soren stressed interim bail and apprised the court that one phase of the Lok Sabha poll is over, the fifth phase is on May 20 and the third phase is scheduled for May 25. He also said that there is no material to show against Soren in the case.

The top court said that it will not pass any order unless it is prima facie satisfied. Soren has approached the top court against the Jharkhand High Court decision which rejected his plea challenging arrest in a money laundering case. Jharkhand High Court has rejected Soren’s plea challenging arrest in a money laundering case on May 3.

Soren in his plea before the High Court has claimed that his arrest was unwarranted and his remand in the matter was arbitrary and illegal. Hemant Soren, who has filed the petition through advocate Pragya Baghel, called his arrest illegal and malafide. In the meantime, he has sought interim bail.

After a prolonged moment of speculation in the media and a hide-and-seek drama, former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Chairperson Hemant Soren was arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in the land scam case in January. The probe pertains to huge amounts of proceeds of crime generated by forging official records by showing ‘fake sellers’ and purchasers in the guise of forged or bogus documents to acquire huge parcels of land valued in crores. The JMM leader was apprehended on January 31 in connection with the money-laundering case linked to an alleged land scam following his resignation as the Jharkhand chief minister.

</excerpt>

This is the eighth chargesheet filed by the probing agency in the money-laundering in which 18 people have been arrested so far.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a Prosecution Complaint (chargesheet) against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Arvind Kejriwal in connection with a money laundering case related to the purported excise policy scam. This marks the eighth chargesheet filed by the ED in this case, with 18 individuals arrested thus far. Recently, a similar complaint was lodged against BRS leader and former Telangana chief minister Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter K Kavitha and four others.

Arvind Kejriwal was detained on March 21 in connection with the case, and the apex court granted him interim bail until June 1, with a requirement to surrender on June 2. However, the court imposed restrictions, barring him from accessing his office or the Delhi Secretariat and from signing official documents without the lieutenant governor’s approval unless absolutely necessary.

The case revolves around alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and execution of the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, subsequently annulled. Additional Solicitor General S V Raju informed the Supreme Court that Kejriwal played a significant role in crafting the now-scrapped excise policy, citing evidence that Kejriwal stayed in a seven-star hotel, with bills partially paid by a case defendant. The ED contends that as the national convenor of AAP, Kejriwal was vicariously liable for the purported scam.

The ED had earlier asserted that AAP, as a political party, falls under the definition of an association or body of individual citizens of India, hence categorized as a “company” under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). As Kejriwal was in charge of AAP during the alleged offences, both he and the party are deemed guilty under the anti-money laundering law, subject to prosecution and punishment.

The excise case’s origins trace back to alleged irregularities in formulating and executing Delhi’s excise policy for 2021-22, prompting Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena to recommend a CBI probe. Subsequently, the ED initiated a case under the PMLA, following the CBI’s FIR lodged on August 17, 2022, filing its money laundering case on August 22, 2022, to investigate the purported irregularities.

The central investigative agency also named the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as an accused in the case.

The ED informed the Supreme Court that it found chats between Arvind Kejriwal and hawala operators concerning the alleged proceeds of crime related to the excise policy case.

The agency claims these chats were recovered from the devices of hawala operators after Kejriwal refused to share the password to his devices.

This ruling clarifies the procedural limitations on ED’s powers post-cognisance by a special court.

Additionally, the apex court outlined that if the ED deems custody necessary for interrogation, it must file an application before the concerned court. Subsequently, the court can grant custody only after thoroughly assessing the reasons presented by the probe agency, ensuring that custodial interrogation is indeed warranted.

This decision sets a legal precedent regarding the protocol for arrests and custodial matters under the PMLA, emphasizing the judiciary’s role in overseeing investigative processes.

Initially listing the matter on May 20, a bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta changed the date to May 17 after senior advocate Kapil Sibal expressed concern that the elections would be over by then and he would be prejudiced if a longer date was given. “My case is covered by Arvind Kejriwal’s order, and I need bail for election campaigning,” Sibal informed the bench.

Despite the bench expressing reluctance to change the date from May 20 due to a heavy workload, it agreed to the change after persistent requests from Sibal and senior advocate Arunabh Chowdhury, who appeared for Soren.

“We don’t know whether we will be able to take up the matter, but still, we are posting it for May 17,” remarked the bench.Hemant Soren, in his plea, challenged the May 3 order of the Jharkhand High Court dismissing his petition against the arrest.

He also sought interim bail for campaigning in the Lok Sabha elections until the court delivered its verdict on his plea against the arrest.

Arvind Kejriwal was granted interim bail by the top court on May 10 for campaigning in the Lok Sabha polls after being arrested in a money laundering case related to an alleged Delhi excise policy scam.

Mr Kejriwal was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with the Excise Policy Case.

At approximately 7 pm today, after 50 days in detention, the Delhi Chief Minister emerged from jail, greeted by a large crowd of Aam Aadmi Party supporters outside Tihar Jail. Upon his arrival home, Mr Kejriwal received a warm welcome from AAP MP Sanjay Singh, who embraced him as soon as he stepped out of the car.

Inside, Arvind Kejriwal was greeted by his parents and wife with traditional aarti and garlands. His mother stood at the door, holding a garland to welcome her son, whom she greeted with a hug and blessings. Beside her, Mr Kejriwal’s father also embraced his son, patting his back affectionately.

The release of the AAP chief not only energizes his party but also the INDI alliance. Sunita Kejriwal, Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, recognized as AAP’s key campaigner in Gujarat and Delhi for the Lok Sabha elections, welcomed her husband home by garlanding him.

Arvind Kejriwal outlined his schedule for the first half of Saturday, including a visit to a Hanuman temple in New Delhi’s Connaught Place at 11 am, followed by a press conference at the AAP office at 1 pm.

</excerpt>

If Rahul Gandhi wins both Wayanad and Rae Bareli seats, which of the two will he retain?

In this election, no other leader’s constituency generated as much curiosity as that of Rahul Gandhi over where else he will contest polls from in addition to Wayanad. There were discussions regarding Amethi, where Rahul Gandhi faced defeat in the 2019 elections after representing the constituency as an MP for 15 years. The Gandhi family’s ties with Amethi are very old and strong. Sanjay Gandhi was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amethi in 1980, followed by Rajiv Gandhi three times, Sonia Gandhi once and Rahul Gandhi thrice.

However, the reason why Rahul Gandhi chose not to contest from Amethi this time remains unclear. Perhaps his advisors advised him against it, fearing a potential defeat. In my opinion, he should have still contested from Amethi, for it is believed that he would have emerged victorious there as well.

Congress has fielded Kishori Lal Sharma, a confidant of the Gandhi family, from Amethi. While many expected Priyanka Gandhi to fight the elections from Amethi, she has declared that she would campaign for Kishori Lal Sharma. In my opinion, Priyanka’s presence in the fray would have increased the chances of victory. However, since she is not in the race, Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest from Rae Bareli, another traditional stronghold of the family, indicates his confidence in that constituency. The historical ties of the Gandhi-Nehru family with Rae Bareli run deep. In the first and second Lok Sabha elections of the country, Feroze Gandhi was elected to Lok Sabha from Rae Bareli. Indira Gandhi won the election from this constituency thrice. Sonia Gandhi has also been representing Raebareli for four consecutive terms since 2004.

Rahul Gandhi filed nomination papers with great fanfare in Rae Bareli. Quite naturally, everyone watches him closely. A BJP leader sarcastically told me that Rahul Gandhi was saying that ED had frozen Congress’ bank account and the party does not have money even to buy train tickets. So, how could he afford a plane in which he arrived along with staunch Congress leaders Ashok Gehlot and K C Venugopal? Similarly, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Robert Vadra arrived on the second plane while Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge arrived on the third plane. Then the BJP leader also reminded me that none of them was present in Amethi to file Kishori Lal Sharma’s nomination papers! The BJP is always ready to seize any opportunity that comes its way and obviously so. The BJP leaders even claimed that Rahul Gandhi had ‘fled’ from Wayanad fearing defeat. Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that a formidable candidate has been fielded, making it difficult for Rahul Gandhi to secure a victory. However, reports suggest that Rahul Gandhi is set to win the Wayanad seat. Therefore, the pressing question is that if Rahul Gandhi wins both the seats, which one will he choose to retain? In my opinion, he will most likely retain Rae Bareli, the traditional stronghold of his family. He understands that without gaining a foothold in Uttar Pradesh, any aspiration of governing the nation would be futile.

In the realm of Indian politics today, Rahul Gandhi’s influence is undeniable. Despite not holding the post of party president, the Congress cannot function without him, and the same can be said for the ruling party BJP. Right from Prime Minister to other prominent leaders, nobody can complete his or her speech without mentioning Rahul Gandhi’s name.

Consistent efforts were made to brand him as ‘Pappu’. What I feel is if someone is so unworthy in your view, why do you mention his name time and again? Why not simply ignore him? However, it is impossible to ignore Rahul Gandhi. How can the contribution of Gandhi family in the freedom struggle, the nation building thereafter and the supreme sacrifices made by the family, be forgotten! L K Advani had once told me that we have political differences with the Congress but they are not our enemies, and we cannot ignore them completely.

Many people often comment on Rahul Gandhi’s attire and appearance too. They maintain that while Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi were quite modern in their choices, both of them started wearing traditional khadi attire associated with the Congress party once they entered politics. Sonia Gandhi even began wearing sarees. From that point onwards, they were never seen in modern clothing. However, Rahul Gandhi stands out as being extremely modern in his fashion sense, embracing the attire of the youth. He has broken away from tradition, perhaps to maintain his own unique identity. However, I firmly believe that clothing plays a significant role in the realm of politics. Another aspect that is often mentioned is that Rahul Gandhi’s nature is such that his close associates like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasada, Milind Deora, K P Singh left him. The question is whether they left because of Rahul’s nature or they were feeling insecure? Or was the system around Rahul Gandhi suffocating them?

Many leaders have parted ways with Congress. Sonia Gandhi is currently unwell. Notwithstanding this, Rahul and Priyanka are fighting even as they are pitted against the formidable BJP bolstered by Narendra Modi. Modi’s leadership is charismatic. The party has seasoned players like Amit Shah, and Yogi Adityanath in UP. Even before the Congress could aim, their arrow hits the target. Rahul possesses the determination to triumph in the struggle but he does not have a team of fighters. I have stated on multiple occasions that a strong team or contingent cannot be assembled unless Congress is revitalised. The Congress leaders who win the elections do so on the strength of their own abilities. It is imperative to revitalise and strengthen Congress, but at the moment, it is not an easy challenge to accept.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja,has dismissed the applications, saying the stage was not right to grant the relief. K Kavitha is in judicial custody in both the cases lodged by the ED and the CBI. During the hearing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) opposed the plea, alleging that Kavitha had tampered with evidence and influenced witnesses in the case.

The agency accused Kavitha of being a pivotal member of the “South Group,” which purportedly paid kickbacks of Rs 100 crore to the ruling AAP in Delhi in exchange for a significant portion of liquor licenses in the capital. Kavitha, aged 46, was apprehended from her residence in Banjara Hills on March 15 amidst protests by BRS supporters.

</excerpt>

Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, currently in custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over the Delhi liquor scam case, has been granted permission by the Delhi High Court to visit his ailing wife once a week.

Sisodia was taken into custody by the CBI on February 26, 2022, in connection with the drafting and execution of the now-defunct Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

Recently, the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi rejected both of Sisodia’s bail pleas in the Delhi liquor scam case. Special CBI Judge Kaveri Bawega dismissed the bail applications against cases filed by both the CBI and the ED.

Both investigative agencies opposed Sisodia’s bail pleas, labeling him as the mastermind in the liquor scam and expressing concerns that he might tamper with evidence if released on bail.

Manish Sisodia was arrested twice, first by the CBI on February 26, 2023, and then by the ED on March 9, 2023. The ED has charged him with involvement in irregularities in the excise policy, leading to losses for the state exchequer.

Meanwhile, Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with the money laundering case linked to the now-scrapped excise policy. He is currently held in Tihar jail.

</excerpt>

The Supreme Court is set to hear the petitions filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren challenging their arrests by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Both cases are scheduled to be heard on Monday before the bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, as reported by Live Law.

Arvind Kejriwal’s petition challenges the Delhi High Court’s April 9 judgment, which dismissed his writ petition against his arrest by the ED in a money laundering case linked to the now-defunct Delhi excise policy. The Aam Aadmi Party leader has been in custody since his arrest on March 21. The ED has filed its counter-affidavit, and Kejriwal has filed his rejoinder in response.

On Wednesday, Hemant Soren also approached the Supreme Court seeking relief against his arrest.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Hemant Soren, informed the Supreme Court bench that the Jharkhand High Court had reserved its judgment on Soren’s petition challenging his arrest at the end of February, but the verdict has not yet been delivered. Sibal requested an urgent hearing due to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, expressing concern that Soren could remain in jail even after the elections are over.

In his plea before the high court, Soren claimed that his arrest was unwarranted and that his remand in the matter was arbitrary and illegal. He has filed the petition through advocate Pragya Baghel, describing his arrest as illegal and malafide. Soren has also sought interim bail.

In January, after much speculation and drama, Hemant Soren was arrested by the ED in a land scam case. However, on Saturday, the Special PMLA Court in Ranchi denied his request for interim bail to attend his uncle’s funeral.

</excerpt>

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) seized properties valued at Rs 73.62 crore in the Patra Chawl redevelopment case linked to Pravin Raut, who is allegedly close to Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, the agency announced on Wednesday. These properties, located in Mumbai’s Palghar, Dapoli, Raigad, and Thane areas, were attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.

The case involves irregularities in the redevelopment of the Patra Chawl Project in Goregaon by Guru Ashish Construction Pvt Ltd (GACPL). The ED’s investigation revealed financial misconduct by GACPL, which was entrusted with rehabilitating 672 tenants. Instead, the company fraudulently sold Floor Space Index (FSI) to nine developers for approximately Rs 901.79 crore without fulfilling its obligations.

Pravin Raut, a director of GACPL, diverted Rs 95 crore of the proceeds to personal bank accounts, used some for purchasing land, gifted properties to family members, and parked some with associates.

Earlier, assets worth Rs 11.15 crore belonging to Pravin Raut and Sanjay Raut were seized, along with properties in Goa valued at Rs 31.50 crore owned by Rakesh Kumar Wadhawan and Sarang Wadhawan. In total, the ED has attached immovable properties worth Rs. 116.27 crore in this case.

Pravin Raut and Sanjay Raut were arrested under PMLA in February and August 2022 respectively, but are currently out on bail. The ED has filed a Prosecution Complaint against Rakesh Kumar Wadhawan, Sarang Wadhawan, Pravin Raut, and Guru Ashish Construction Pvt Ltd, with a supplementary complaint against Sanjay Raut, all of which have been acknowledged by the Special PMLA Court.

</excerpt>

The Rouse Avenue Court has granted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal additional time to file a rejoinder regarding the replies filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on his two revisions against the summons issued to him. This comes after the ED issued summons to Kejriwal on two complaints.

“Special Judge Rakesh Syal, after hearing submissions of counsels appeared for Kejriwal, granted two weeks to file rejoinders and for arguments on revisions,” reports ANI. “The matters have been listed on May 14 for further hearing.”

Advocates Rajiv Mohan, Mudit Jain, and Mohd. Irshad appeared for Arvind Kejriwal, while N K Matta and Simon Benjamin represented the ED.

The delay in filing the rejoinders was attributed to Kejriwal’s arrest in the Delhi Excise policy case, with his legal team needing additional time to prepare. Kejriwal has been in custody until May 7.

“The ED has already filed replies to two revisions challenging the issuance of summons on the complaints filed by the Agency in the Delhi Excise policy case,” reports ANI.

Earlier, the court had refused to grant a stay on the summons issued to Kejriwal on complaints filed by the ED.

“Kejriwal has challenged the summons issued by the court after taking cognizance of two complaints filed by the ED for avoidance of the summons issued to him,” reports ANI.

Kejriwal’s legal team argued that there was no intentional disobedience on his part, as he had provided reasons for not appearing, including his responsibilities as the Chief Minister. They also argued that the trial court had issued summons hastily without considering Kejriwal’s responses.

On the other hand, the ED argued that intentional disobedience is a matter of trial and that Kejriwal’s actions, such as attending the CBI office but not the ED office, indicated intentional disobedience. The ED also stated that any person can be summoned in person under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

“ASG S V Raju opposed the submissions by the counsels for the accused and submitted that whether disobedience is intentional or not is a matter of trial,” reports ANI. “This revision is against the order of summoning.”

In the first complaint, the Rouse Avenue Court had taken cognizance of the ED’s complaint against Kejriwal for not complying with the summons issued in the Delhi liquor policy money laundering case. The ED wants to record Kejriwal’s statement regarding the formulation of the policy and allegations of bribery.

“The AAP has accused the Lieutenant Governor of ordering a probe into alleged irregularities in the policy, leading to its scrapping,” reports ANI. “The then Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, was arrested by the CBI in February in connection with the case.”

</excerpt>

Tihar Jail administration and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal clashed on Monday. According to AAP Kejriwal has written a letter to the Tihar Jail superintendent under which he had kept his concerns regarding the statements of jail administration about the issue of insulin.

CM Kejriwal had said in his letter, “I have read the statement of Tihar administration in the newspaper. I felt sad after reading the statement. Both the statements of Tihar are false. I am asking for insulin daily. I showed the glucose meter readings and said that the sugar is going very high three times a day. Sugar goes between 250 to 320.”

The convenor of the party further said that he had always asked for the insulin. He further claimed that his sugar level was always hovered in the range of 160-200 every day. He said that he had asked for the insulin everyday. He further questioned Tihar Jail about how they can say that I never asked for the insulin.

As per party sources, he further asked about the AIIMS doctor ‘Nothing to worry about’ statement. “AIIMS doctors never said that there was nothing to worry about. Doctors of AIIMS have said that they will give advice after looking at the data and history.” The Tihar administration is lying under political pressure.”

He alleged that Tihar jail administration is under political pressure.

Recently, the Delhi court on Monday, had declined a plea of Kejriwal which demanded the directions for the Tihar jail authorities for administering insulin and get consultation through video conference daily from the doctor for 15 minutes. In respect to his acute diabetes and changing blood sugar level.

Earlier AAP leader Atishi made serious accusations against the Tihar officials and Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleging that a conspiracy is made to make sure that Arvind Kejriwal doesn’t get insulin.

</excerpt>

Businessman Raj Kundra, whose assets were confiscated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) last night for ₹ 97.79 crore as part of an investigation into a Bitcoin ponzi scheme, posted a mysterious message late last night about maintaining composure.

The husband of Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty, Mr. Kundra, posted a picture of a roaring lion on Instagram Stories along with the caption: “Learning to stay calm when you feel disrespected is a different type of growth.”

Among the properties taken from them are equity interests belonging to Mr. Kundra, a residential home in Pune, and a residential unit in Juhu registered in Shilpa Shetty’s name.

The pair has denied having anything to do with the case. Their attorney stated in a statement yesterday that they believe a fair inquiry will be conducted and that there is no evidence against them.

“There is no prima facie case made out against my clients Mr Raj Kundra and Mrs Shilpa Shetty Kundra. I believe when we make our fair representation before the Honourable Enforcement Directorate, even the investigation agencies may grant justice to us. We have faith in the fair investigation,” Prashant Patil, their attorney, stated.

A Ponzi scheme is a type of investment fraud in which investors are seduced with claims of enormous returns at negligible or no risk. Rather than putting the money to use, the con artists use it to entice new investors and reimburse the original ones with the money from the more recent ones.

The current investigation concerns claims that Mr. Kundra got 285 bitcoins from the Ponzi scheme’s creator, which he planned to utilize to start a Bitcoin mining farm in Ukraine. But the deal fell through, leaving Mr. Kundra with almost ₹150 crore worth of Bitcoins.

Mr. Kundra has previously been the subject of a police investigation. He was taken into custody in 2021 in connection with the creation and dissemination of pornographic videos. He was later granted bail by the Supreme Court.
