Germany: Chancellor Olaf Scholz Loses No-Confidence Vote

The German parliament voted on Monday to withdraw confidence in Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his government, paving the way for an early election on February 23. He pointed to his previous tenure as finance minister in a coalition with the conservatives, emphasizing his experience.

Merz, however, criticized Scholz’s financial strategies, arguing they would impose a heavy burden on future generations and accusing him of failing to deliver on promised rearmament efforts following the Ukraine war. “Taking on debt at the cost of the young generation, spending money – and you didn’t say the word ‘competitiveness’ once,” Merz said.

Friedrich Merz rejected a Green Party proposal to cut energy prices, arguing for an entirely new energy policy instead. Robert Habeck, the Greens’ chancellor candidate, criticized this stance, describing it as a troubling development for Germany’s democracy. He warned that the fractured political landscape likely means another coalition of ideologically diverse parties. “It’s very unlikely the next government will have it easier,” Habeck said.

The Faizabad/Ayodhya Lok Sabha constituency comprises five Vidhan Sabha (assembly) segments–Ayodhya, Bikapur, Milkipur, Rudauli, and Dariyabad (Barabanki). In November 2018, the Yogi Adityanath-led state government officially renamed the Faizabad district as Ayodhya, further emphasizing the city’s cultural and religious significance.

Lallu Singh is seeking a third term from Ayodhya, with the construction of the Ram Mandir (temple) on the site of the Babri mosque being a key campaign issue. This issue has resonated with millions across the country and has been prominently featured in the campaign speeches of BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Aside from Awadhesh Prasad of the Samajwadi Party, Sachhidanand Pandey of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is also contesting from Ayodhya. Despite being a five-time BJP MLA, Lallu Singh faces a tough challenge from Awadhesh Prasad, who has a strong political background and was formerly a minister in Akhilesh Yadav’s cabinet.

In the 2019 elections, Lallu Singh secured a comfortable victory over his closest rival, Anand Sen Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, receiving 529,021 votes against 463,544 garnered by Yadav. Faizabad/Ayodhya recorded an impressive overall voter turnout of 61.5% in the 2019 elections.

In the 2014 general elections, Lallu Singh won by a significant margin of 1,14,059 votes against Mitrasen Yadav of the Samajwadi Party. The BJP has been successful in Uttar Pradesh in recent national elections, winning 71 and 64 seats in the 2014 and 2019 elections respectively, making it the largest single party in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, held a massive roadshow in Ayodhya on May 6 in support of the BJP’s candidate. The roadshow, which was widely televised, drew a tremendous response from locals who lined the streets, chanting slogans in support of PM Modi and CM Yogi.

PM Modi’s visit marked his third to Ayodhya in six months, during which he announced several development projects for the city. With ongoing development projects worth more than Rs 32,000 crore and the establishment of a world-class railway station and an international airport named after Maharishi Valmiki, Ayodhya is poised to become a globally recognized city while maintaining its traditional and historical significance.

The Ayodhya dispute, which had been a contentious issue for decades, was settled by a landmark Supreme Court judgment in 2019, allowing for the construction of the Ram temple at the disputed site. The ceremony for the ceremonial enthronement of Ram Lalla at his birthplace marked the completion of the first phase of the temple’s construction.

In the 2019 elections, the BJP and its ally Apna Dal(S) defied expectations and won 64 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, while the SP and the BSP, part of the ‘Bua-Bhatija’ (aunt-nephew) Mahagathbandhan, managed only 15 seats combined.

The Election Commission of India announced dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha election through a press conference. Lok Sabha Elections 2024 are set to be held in 7 phases beginning on April 19 and ending on June 4. A total of 543 Principal Constituencies will be set up throughout the elections. CEC Rajiv Kumar arrived at the press conference with Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu at 3 pm. On June 16, the current administration will come to an end.

Phase 1 will initiate the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on April 19 and will constitute 21 states and union territories namely, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, West Bengal, Andaman Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Puducherry.

There will be a total of 102 principal constituencies in Phase 1 of the Lok Sabha Elections.

Bank of Baroda Reports Drop in Capex Use in Election Months

Bank of Baroda’s report suggests that both the government and corporate sectors adopt a cautious approach towards capital expenditure during election months.

Economist Jahnavi Prabhakar’s study examined macroeconomic indicators during the 2019 election cycle and compared them to the current calendar year, particularly focusing on the April-May period when elections are scheduled.

The report observed that during elections, the government adopts a cautious approach towards capital expenditure, which is also reflected in company investment announcements and foreign investor behavior. The economist highlighted that this cautious stance is evident across various sectors.

Capital expenditure, also known as capex, involves the allocation of funds for the establishment of long-term physical or fixed assets.

“In the months of April and May, coinciding with election periods, only 14.1% of the total capex target of Rs 3.3 lakh crore in the FY20 Budget was utilized. This figure marks a decrease compared to the utilization rates observed in the previous two years.”

“It’s plausible to suggest that the ongoing elections may have influenced government capex spending, leading to the postponement of certain decisions due to the ongoing electoral process.”

Economist Prabhakar finds it intriguing to see how things unfold in 2024. However, indicators like inflation, credit, currency, bond yields, and stock markets didn’t show any clear trends during the last elections, especially during the polling months.

“It will be interesting to see if there are any unexpected events affecting these factors this time,” the economist remarked.

Over the next six weeks, from April 19 to June 1, India will hold its 18th General Elections. The Lok Sabha elections will take place in seven phases over 44 days, with results expected by June 4. In 2019, the elections were held during April and May, with results announced on May 23.

In 2019, inflation remained steady during April and May but started rising from July, peaking in December. For this year, the Bank of Baroda economist anticipates inflation to remain stable, possibly moderating during the election months. Retail inflation in India is within the RBI’s comfort range of 2-6%, but slightly above the ideal 4% mark, standing at 4.85% in March.

Regarding the stock market, the Sensex showed modest gains in April 2019, which were erased in May. The pattern remained erratic in the following months, with no clear trend emerging. In contrast, the domestic market has seen stable gains so far in 2024.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday came down heavily on opposition party leaders, asserting that he will not “spare anyone involved in corruption” while pledging “to take every scamster to task”.

“I will take every scamster to task,” PM Modi said, without taking any names. His scathing remarks came days after an opposition party meeting in Patna earlier this month pledged to take on the BJP in the next year’s elections.
While addressing party booth workers in Madhya Pradesh where elections are due later this year, PM Modi said,” All the corrupt politicians joined their hands in Patna’s meeting. Opposition is trying to escape the anti-scam crackdown. The corrupt leaders are trying to save each other”.

Lashing out at the mega meeting held in Patna on June 23, which saw participation by leaders from over 15 Opposition parties, the PM said all corrupt leaders had joined their hands in Patna.
“The party booth workers will expose their corruption at a village level. They will let people know about their (opposition) real faces. People of this country have an awareness of what was the real agenda behind opposition leaders in getting together at a platform,” the PM said. Pressing his attack, the Prime Minister said that the term “guarantee” was in vogue these days.

“But what is the guarantee all about? The guarantee is for corruption. The guarantee is about scams worth lakhs of crores. The identity of such opposition leaders is to guarantee a scam worth Rs 20 lakh crore,” the PM said.

“I guarantee you, I will not spare any of them,” PM Modi said in his address to BJP booth-level workers in Bhopal.
“If they (the opposition) have the guarantee of scams and corruption then I also have one guarantee for all of you and it is I will not spare any of those who are involved in the corruption…,” PM Modi pledged.

The Opposition meeting in Patna was called by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who severed ties with the BJP to form an alliance with his political rival Lalu Prasad Yadav paving the way for a ‘Mahagathbandhan 2.0’ ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Taking a dig at the opposition leaders, who have been accusing PM Modi of “misusing” probe agencies for “political ends”, the PM said, “Today when action is being taken against them (Opposition), they are banding together and forming a unity,” PM Modi said.

BJP unveils its election manifesto in Karnataka, promises to implement uniform civil code

Party president JP Nadda released a document today named Praja Pranalike in Bengaluru. On this occasion, Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai, veteran party leader BS Yediyurappa, and others were present.

Mr Nadda, while talking to media persons, said that the manifestation was not prepared after marathon discussions in an air-conditioned room; rather, party workers had visited every nook and corner of the state and got the view of the people before it was prepared.

A tough battle is expected in the Karnataka assembly polls, and in this situation, the saffron party said that its promise covers all sections of society.

BJP to release the first list of candidates for around 170-180 seats , said former chief minister of Karnataka and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran BS Yediyurappa on Monday.

Tripura Polls: BJP to Conduct Election Committee on Friday

The Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Bharatiya Janata Party is about to finalize the tickets for the upcoming Tripura Assembly polls, which is scheduled to be held on Friday in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence. The CEC meeting will be chaired by JP Nadda, national president of BJP, at the party’s national headquarters in Delhi.

Nepal elections: Vote counting begins amid tight security

The ruling Nepali Congress won the first House of Representatives seat on Monday, as counting of votes for parliamentary and provincial elections began amid tight security.

The counting began at 7 a.m. local time and will continue until 5 p.m., a day after approximately 61% of the Himalayan nation voted.

Officials from the Election Commission, party representatives, and members of the media are present at the polling stations.

The Himalayan Times reported that voting has begun in Kathmandu’s constituencies 1, 3, 4, 6, and 7, as well as all constituencies in Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.

Counting has also begun in Kaski, Jhapa, Mustang, Saptari, Banke, Rupandehi, and Nawalparasi west, according to the report.

The Nepali Congress (NC) has established an account after its candidate Yogesh Gauchan Thakali was elected to the House of Representatives from Mustang.

According to the Election Commission, Gauchan received 3,992 votes, while his closest rival Prem Tulachan of the CPN-UML received 3,078.

Yangma is the district’s most remote polling station. In four days, the voting team walked from Fungling to Yangma, which is located at an elevation of 4,200 metres. In the area, 12 of the total 61 votes were cast.

Meanwhile, four police officers were killed and eight others were injured on Monday morning when their jeep veered off a hilly road near Ningladi stream in Patan Municipality, Baitadi district.

According to police, the officers were returning to duty after handing over the ballot boxes at the district headquarters.

The polling stations opened at 7 a.m. local time on Sunday and closed at 5 p.m. Voter turnout was significantly lower than in the previous two elections, with 77% in 2013 and 78% in 2017.

More than 17.9 million people were eligible to vote in the election of a 275-member House of Representatives and provincial legislatures.

165 of the 275 Members of Parliament will be elected directly, while the remaining 110 will be elected through a proportional electoral system.

Dimple Yadav to file nomination for Mainpuri constituency

Samajwadi Party leader Dimple Yadav is all set to contest the elections from the Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh and on Monday Dimple will file her nomination.

Meanwhile, to carry the legacy of her father-in-law Mulayam Singh Yadav constituency SP chief Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav will fight from Mainpuri.

Following the death of Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Mainpuri seat is vacant since 10 October and Samajwadi Party stronghold.

Before her nomination, various party workers and leaders visited Akhilesh Yadav’s Safai residence in Uttar Pradesh.

Moreover, while filing the nomination of Dimple Yadav SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, and party veteran Ram Gopal other leaders Dharmendra Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav will be present.

Alok Shakya informed the Mainpuri party office Yadav family will first arrive and then for nomination they will reach the Collectorate office.

However, on 5 December the polling for the bypoll will take place and on 8 December the counting of votes will take place.

Furthermore, 17 November is the last date for filing the nominations and till 21 November candidates will be able to withdraw their candidature.

Hong Kong charges 4 people for reposting ‘boycott calls’

Four people in Hong Kong have been charged for allegedly reposting social media content compelling users to cast blank votes or not to vote in the 2021 Legislative council election as reported by Honk Kong Free Press.

Hong Kong’s anti-corruption watchdog, Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) accused physiotherapist Wong Chi-Yan, graphic designer Wu Hong-ki, financial dealer Kwok Kin-Chiu and Mabel Yick, unemployed of reposting the contents.

“Each faces one count of engaging in illegal conduct to incite another person not to vote, or to cast an invalid vote, by activity in public during the election period, contrary to Section 27A (1) of the Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance (ECICO),” the ICAC said in the statement.

However, the four suspects were released on ICAC bail and will appear in court on Friday.

PM Modi congratulates Lula da Silva for winning Brazil’s Presidential elections

Lula da Silva won the Brazil’s Presidential elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him on the win.

“Congratulations to @LulaOficial on winning the Presidential elections in Brazil. Silva defeated incumbent president Jair Bolsonaro in fierce voting which was a tight race between the two politicians and Silva emerged as the country’s new president on Sunday.

Widely known as “Lula”, the politician gained 50.83 per cent of the votes, with over 98 per cent of the votes counted in a fiercely contested run-off election on Sunday whereas his opponent Bolsonaro managed to get 49.17 per cent votes.

According to the reports, earlier on 2nd October, none of the candidates could hit the 5 per cent mark needed to win in the first round. The candidates for the presidential post also casted the votes on Sunday.

Notably, this year’s elections allowed for the eligibility of more than 156 million people to cast their votes.

The 76-year-old Lula concentrated his campaign on ousting Bolsonaro and touted his prior accomplishments all throughout it. During his candidacy, he advocated for a new tax structure that would increase public spending. Ulf Kristersson became Sweden’s new Prime Minister, PM Modi congratulates

Moderate Party Leader, Ulf Kristersson became the new Prime Minister of Sweden. PM Modi congratulated the new PM on Wednesday and said that he looks forward to working together to strengthen bilateral relations.

“Congratulations to H. E. Mr. Ulf Kristersson on his election as the next Prime Minister of Sweden. I look forward to working closely together to further strengthen our multi-faceted partnership. @SwedishPM,” PM Modi said in a tweet. Ulf Kristersson is elected as the country’s new PM by Sweden’s Parliament as 176 members of the Riksdag, legislature, voted in favor of him while 173 were against the new PM, according to Anadolu Agency.

“It feels great, I am grateful and happy about the confidence I have received from the Riksdag and also markedly humble about the task that lies ahead of us,” Kristersson said in a news conference following the vote

According to Anadolu Agency, Kristersson will serve as the leader of a coalition government made up of the Liberals, Christian Democrats, and Moderates.
The interim government’s outgoing leader, Magdalena Andersson, congratulated Kristersson on becoming prime minister in an Instagram post. Andersson, though, stated: “The four right-wing conservative parties made a lot of promises prior to the elections. However, we have already heard that they are starting to break their commitments to the electorate.”

Kristersson made some modifications to the cabinet after taking office as Sweden’s new prime minister. According to the official website of the Swedish government, the new administration has named Paulina Brandberg the Minister for Gender Equality and Deputy Minister for Employment, Johan Pehrson the Minister for Employment and Integration, and Jessika Roswall the Minister for EU Affairs.

Eknath Shinde faction has submitted these three symbol options to the Election Commission

In the midst of a battle with the Uddhav Thackeray faction, the Eknath Shinde camp submitted a list of their three choices for the party symbol to the Election Commission of India via email on Tuesday morning, according to people familiar with the matter. The choices that have been submitted are said to be the sun, sword and shield, and pipal tree. The EC had frozen the Shiv Sena’s “bow and arrow” symbol last week amid a growing schism. The case had even made it to the Supreme Court.

The poll body allowed Team Eknath Shinde to name the party Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena (Balasaheb’s Shiv Sena) on Monday. Shiv Sena (Balasaheb Thackeray), the team’s other choice, was rejected on the grounds that it was also team Uddhav’s first choice.

Following the EC’s approval of the name, Shinde – in a tweet roughly translated from Marathi – – said: “Finally the victory of Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray’s Hindutva ideals. We are the inheritors of his ideals.” Eknath Shinde has insisted that he continues to follow the ideals of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray ever since he revolted against Uddhav Thackeray and later took charge as Maharashtra chief minister.

The EC has already approved a symbol for the Uddhav Thackeray camp: a flaming torch, also known as a “mashaal.” Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), Team Uddhav’s second choice of name, has been approved.

The developments come ahead of a crucial by-election in Mumbai’s Andheri on November 3 – the first since the Uddhav Thackeray government collapsed in June.

Attack on Congress MLA;Rahul Gandhi claims BJP’s role

A Congress MLA was attacked in Gujarat amid a protest of the tribals against the Par Tapi river link project. Rahul Gandhi leveled allegations on the BJP, claiming that the MLA was targeted by the rival party.

Anant Patel alleged an attack on Saturday. “About four-five people attacked Anant Patel yesterday after which he sat on a protest with his Adivasi supporters. He’s been assured that within three days, the guilty will be caught, and proper action will be taken. Cops were deployed but no untoward incident occurred,” Navsari deputy superintendent of police was quoted as saying.

Late at night, Rahul Gandhi tweeted with a photo of Patel in which the head injury was visible, he wrote in Hindi:”“In Gujarat, the attack on our MLA Anant Patel – who has been protesting for tribals against the Par Tapi river link project – by the BJP is condemnable. This is the panic of the BJP government. Every worker of the Congress will fight till the last breath for the rights of tribals.”

Other leaders from the Congress Party tweeted as well. “Condemn the brutal attack o Congress tribal leader Anant Patel MLA. Sanghi’s always use force, it is the same Godse methodology. We will not bow down to Godse’s grandchildren,” wrote Congress MP Manickam Tagore.

After the alleged attack, Patel told,”We’ll protest here till the time the Zila Panchayat chief and his goons are caught. Highways of 14 districts will be blocked by Adivasis till then… Anyone who raises their voice under the rule of the BJP government is beaten up and sent to jail.”

The attack claims come ahead of te assembly polls due in the state. A couple of weeks ago, Arvind Kejrival, Chief Minister of Delhi had alleged that a party leader- Manoj Sorathiya was attacked by BJP goons.

Election commission holds meet with parties ahead of polls in HP

The Election Commission of India (ECI) held review meetings today on the preparedness for the incoming Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh with Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police, IG, DIG, and CAPF, and Nodal Officers of 12 districts.
Speaking to the media, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said, “Today we held a meeting with all the political parties. Representatives of all national political parties and office-bearers were present. They told us how they wanted a free and fair election. We also had a word with the Chief Secretaries of State, DG, and the health secretaries, and now we’re going to talk to the DCs and SPs in order to figure out how to have a fair election”. He further added that they had an extensive discussion regarding the lack of motivation among the 18+ voters to come forward and cast their votes. “When people over the age of 80 can come to the polling booth and cast their votes, why can’t they come? Will discuss all of these,” Rajiv Kumar said.
The ECI is to hold a press conference tomorrow in Shimla where Kumar will brief the media about the meetings that are being conducted.
Currently, they have been meeting with the DCs and SPs. Further details about the matter will be revealed on Saturday.
A high-level team of the Election Commission of India, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey, undertook a three-day visit to Shimla to review the poll preparedness for forthcoming assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh.
On the way to Shimla, the team visited the polling station at Government Senior Secondary School Dharampur in Solan district and inaugurated the fascia of the polling station, the release stated.
As per the release, the CEC also felicitated and interacted with the elderly voters, people with disabilities (PWD) voters, and transgender voters by presenting them with shawls and an appreciation letter.
The ECI team also met and felicitated the first-time voters and gave them an Epic-Kit, containing their voter i-card, pocket voter guide, and voter pledge (Shapath Patra).
Maneesh Garg, Chief Electoral Officer, Himachal Pradesh, welcomed and honoured the ECI team at Dharampur.
Earlier, a team from the EC also visited Ahmedabad from September 16-18 to take stock of election preparedness in the state ahead of the upcoming
Assembly elections.
“The team comprised Hridesh Kumar, Nitesh Vyas, Dharmendra Sharma, NN Butolia, Yashvendra Singh, Deepali Masirkar, S B Joshi, Shubhra Saxena, and Anuj Chandak,” the release stated.
As per the release, ECI and Chief Electoral Officer P Bharathi held a review meeting with district election officers, police superintendents, and police commissioners regarding election preparedness.

Bilaspur MP Arun Sao appointed Chhattisgarh BJP president

Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Bilaspur MP Arun Sao has been appointed as the president of its Chhattisgarh unit on Tuesday.

Ahead of the Chhattisgarh Assembly polls, Sao has been appointed as president of the Chhattisgarh unit.

Meanwhile, in 2019 Sao was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bilaspur on a BJP ticket.

“National President of Bharatiya Janata Party, Hon’ble Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda Ji has appointed Shri Arun Sao, MP, Bilaspur Lok Sabha as the State President of Chhattisgarh Bharatiya Janata Party,” the party said.

Earlier, a former Lok Sabha member Vishunudev Sai was the BJP Chhattisgarh unit president.

Moreover, the state is ruled by Congress with Bhupesh Baghel as the chief minister. Earlier, for 15 years from 2003 to 2018, there was BJP led government. During that time the state was led by former chief minister Raman Singh.

Notably, in 2023 Chhattisgarh Assembly elections are to be held in the state.

Ahead of Gujarat elections, Delhi CM Kejriwal to visit Gujarat on August 1

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Admi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal will again visit Gujarat on August 1. For the upcoming State Assembly polls, Kejriwal is aggressively campaigning.

Moreover, CM Kejriwal will address a public meeting in Somnath. He will be in Gujarat on August 6,7 and 10.

Last Thursday Delhi CM visited Surat where he promised 300 units of free electricity and a supply of 24*7 electricity in all cities and villages across Gujarat if his party forms government.

While addressing a press conference in Surat CM Kejriwal said, “We will provide 300 units of free electricity to all domestic consumers. We will ensure 24*7 electricity supply in all cities and villages, and all pending electricity bills up to 31st December 2021 will be waived off.”

Earlier on July 26, Delhi CM met people and their families who fell ill and at least 28 people died after drinking spurious liquor. CM Kejriwal raised the question of the Gujarat government that if the state is dry then how is alcohol being sold there.

“Why is the state government not looking after this or is there any internal conspiracy behind it?” he said.

However further investigation into the matter is underway.
