The snap Presidential elections in Iran started on Friday to choose the successor to Ebrahim Raisi, who sadly died in a helicopter crash on May 19 this year. As reported by Al Jazeera, any Iranian aged 18 or older can vote in this election in Tehran. There are 58,640 polling stations set up across the country in public places such as mosques and schools. To vote, people need to fill out an application and show their national ID card at the polling booth. They use a secret ballot to write the candidate’s name and code, then put it into a ballot box.

If no candidate gets at least 50 percent plus one vote, including blank votes, a runoff between the top two candidates will happen on the first Friday after the election results are announced. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei voted and urged people to participate, stressing the election’s significance as a political test. “I don’t see any reason for doubt,” Khamenei said during the ceremony at a mosque near his offices, as Al Jazeera reported.

Before the election, two presidential candidates dropped out. Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi, 53, withdrew on Wednesday night and asked other candidates to do the same “to strengthen the revolution’s front,” according to Al Jazeera. Alireza Zakani, the mayor of Tehran, also announced on Thursday that he was withdrawing from the presidential race.

The presidential election was originally planned for 2025 but was moved up due to Raisi’s sudden death in a helicopter crash in north-western Iran, which also killed Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, and other officials. Raisi, aged 63, was an important figure in Iran’s succession planning for the 85-year-old Supreme Leader and was expected to win another term in office.

</excerpt>

This week remained unsettled and vehement from global affairs’ point of view. The president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, and foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian died in a helicopter accident along with two ministers from Azerbaijan. The tragic crash took place on Sunday in the Dizmar forest in East Azerbaijan Province, when they were returning after inaugurating a dam in Azerbaijan. according to the state media. Despite hours of effort invested into finding out the lost helicopter, Iranian president could not be found out due to the bad weather and tough terrain. Later, the debris of the helicopter were found. A large funeral procession was held in Birjand where thousands paid their respects as Raisi’s remains were taken through the streets before being flown to Mashhad for further proceedings. Widely seen as a potential successor to Iran’s 85-year-old Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Raisi held significant authority. Following the constitution of Iran, the first vice president Mohammad Mokhber is currently serving as acting president until an election is conducted in June. During a ceremony at the foreign ministry in Tehran honouring him, the Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani praised Amirabdollahian for upholding “the revolutionary nature of the foreign ministry.”

Iran announced five days of mourning for Raisi, who enforced the hardline policies of his mentor Khamenei. These policies involved imposing stricter regulations on political opponents, strengthening religious authority, and adopting a tough stance on foreign policy issues such as negotiations with the US to revive Iran’s 2015 nuclear agreement. Following the helicopter crash, numerous people gathered in Tehran and Mashhad to pray for Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s recovery amid hopes for positive updates. India also extended its support for Iran as the Indian Prime Minister posted a message wishing well-being of Raisi and others on X when the news of the unfortunate accident broke. However, all optimism was shattered when media outlets reported Raisi’s passing and highlighted the emotional reactions of many individuals from Iran. However, some people of Iran recalled the fundamentalist face of Raisi.

Raisi, 63 years old, was recognized as a conservative leader in Iran. He competed for the presidency in 2017 against the relatively moderate Hassan Rouhani but was unsuccessful. In 2021, he emerged as the leading candidate after a committee overseen by the supreme leader disqualified other viable competitors. Raisi secured victory with more than 60% of the vote in an election characterized by historically low turnout, with millions abstaining or invalidating their ballots. At that time, Human Rights Watch denounced the election as fraudulent. Raisi strongly advocated for gender segregation and supported the notion that women could perform better in an entirely separate and appropriate environment. He strongly supported the idea of making universities in Iran more Islamic, regulating the content on the Internet, and controlling Western influence on the society and culture of Iran. He saw economic sanctions as an opportunity for improvement and believed that effective government action would be beneficial for the people. Raisi also justified strict Sharia law principles. In November 2019, he was among nine Iranian officials sanctioned by the US Department of State over alleged human rights violations. However, sudden death of Raisi has not only left the Iranian politics into a state of muddle at the moment, it would also impact the present complex regional and global dynamics. Iran is engaged with Israel in a violent tussle on one hand while continuing its bitter relationship with the US on the other. While Israel-Hamas conflict is intensifying every day, Iran definitely needs to keep up and running. Despite all global efforts to stop the war between Israel and Hamas, the war is not only on, it is engaging more nations into it.

This week, amid the intensified situation, leaders of Norway, Ireland, and Spain have announced their intention to officially acknowledge Palestine as a state in the coming week. This decision has prompted Israel to recall its envoys immediately. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store of Norway emphasized this week that recognizing Palestinian statehood is believed to be in the best interest of Israel, advocating for a two-state solution. The formal recognition is set to take effect on 28 May. “There cannot be peace in the Middle East if there is no recognition,” he said in Oslo. Ireland’s Prime Minister, Simon Harris, also gave a similar statement, “In the midst of a war, with tens of thousands killed and injured in Gaza, we must keep alive the only alternative that offers a political solution for Israelis and Palestinians alike: Two states, living side by side, in peace and security.” Ireland’s foreign minister Micheal Martin also posted on X that the recognition of Palestine as a separate state will take place on May 28. The official statement from Spain also made it clear that Spain believes in the ‘two-state’ theory and extends its support and recognition for Palestine. “We hope that our recognition and our reasons contribute to other Western countries to follow this path, because the more we are, the more strength we will have to impose a ceasefire,” Prime Minister of Spain said. India has been suggesting this solution of ‘two-state theory’ for both Israel and Palestine to keep the power balance intact for long time.

Balancing looks like a very difficult task, however, it becomes easy when learnt. Global leaders need to apply this act of balancing to power, people, societies, countries and the world, if they truly want peace in the world.

</excerpt>

The sudden and unnatural demise of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian as a consequence of a Helicopter crash on 19 May 2024 in a remote, mountainous area south of the Qiz-Qalasi Dam and Mrea village Uzi whereas the remaining two helicopters were able to cross bad weather has sparked massive speculations of any probability of Internal or external sabotage.

Amid the Gaza conflict involving Iran-backed militant groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis targeting Israel, the accidental death of the President posed suspicion on Israel and the US, but there is no concrete evidence of the same is available till now. It is a known fact that no country will ever take the official responsibility of killing the head of any other sovereign country irrespective of strange diplomatic and military relations or conflict nor may be proved by the evidence. Israel and America are known to neutralize any forces, their commanders, or extremists who are working against their strategic interests. The glaring examples are the direct air strike on Brigadier General Mohammed Riza Zaheri a senior officer of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on 1st April 24 by Israel in Syria and the killing of top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh Mahabadi of Iran on 27th November 2020 near Tehran. Earlier, Major General Qasem Soleimani a prominent Quds Force commander was killed by an American drone strike near an airport in Baghdad on 3rd January 2020.

BELL 212 is a slow-running large and heavy-weight helicopter having a Cruise speed of 190 km per hour, a flying range of 439 km a maximum takeoff load of 15 passengers or 5,080 kg including an empty weight of 2962 kg. its dimensions of 17.42 meters in length and height of 3.8311 meters. Its configuration and relatively slow speed invariably make it vulnerable to any cyber attack that may disrupt the navigation system. The hypothesis of space attack demands a very high order of precision where AI help is essential to establish face recognition as well as application of direct energy weapons or laser systems, Surface-to-air to air or air-to-air missiles are another mode, however, in this particular incidence, it is highly unlikely to have possibilities of a missile attack. Another speculation is about the use of direct energy weapons or disruption of navigation systems by cyber hacking by the USA and Israel as an invisible weapon during conflicts in Middle East Asia in the recent past.

The possibility of internal sabotage by the rival and anti-establishment forces may not be ruled out. Missing weather data, the man near the chopper crash site raised a finger at security and intelligence agencies of anti-Iran forces.

In the hierarchy and governance system of Iran, the ultimate power of decision-making including ensuring succession rests upon the Supreme Leader Ayatollah. The supreme leader has absolute control over the government’s judicial, legislative, military, and executive wings and media. Hence it is very unlikely to witness any immediate and radical changes in the policies of Iran both in international and national spheres due to this complex hierarchy and governance system of Iran.

However, the President plays a highly pivotal role in the administration and international affairs. Over and above the sudden, unnatural death of President Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian poised a paradigm shift in the line of succession of power as both of them were considered top contenders to take over the position of supreme leader. Their exit from the line of succession has opened up the line for other probable including acting president like Mohammad Mokhber and Mojtaba Khamenei son of the present Supreme leader.

The final decision will remain upon the supreme leader and supported by Iran’s Guardian Council, a powerful 12-member body that monitors legislation and election procedures, and the 88-member Assembly of Experts.

India continues to have excellent diplomatic, strategic, and economic relationships with Iran and Israel. India has to balance the interests of the US and Israel as well as with Iran and other Central Asian and Middle Eastern countries. It has become very crucial for India to maintain ultrafine equilibrium with both countries, especially under the pretext of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East the recent shifting of Iran and to make another block of anti-US countries like China Russia, and other associated countries. India has a crucial interest in Chabahar Port since it allows India to counter the interest of China in the Middle East by having a Gwadar port developed in Pakistan. Chabahar Port is an ambitious project for India to have Direct Access to Central Asia and Europe through the futuristic Road -Railway corridor and facilitate Indian trade and strategic partnership with Central Asian countries by avoiding root through Pakistan. Iran is an important business partner of India and one of the exporters of crude oil at reasonable prices. The diplomatic and strategic relations of India with Iran have witnessed greater heights and excellent partnerships under the present leadership. India has facilitated Iran’s entry into BRICS and G-20 Which was genuinely reciprocated by President Raisi by inking a landmark deal with India on Chabahar port. India expects to elevate it further to ensure that Iran does not deviate towards Pakistan and make another Block with China.

Despite the hard-liner, President Raisi was able to maintain workable relations with the Western block to some extent and that is the reason the Iran-Israel conflict did not escalate despite the massive air strike comprised of drones and Cruise missiles by Iran over Israel.
Considering the fact though not declared officially, both Israel and Iran have developed a strong nuclear capability which should be diverted towards peaceful means. Hence There is a strong need for thawing of diplomatic and military conflicts in the Middle East and Central Asia as well and the anti-Israel block has to recognize Israel as a reality and country in the same way the US, Israel, and other countries of the Western block have to accept and promote Palestine as an independent country without any interference of Israel in their activities and on the same time they should not create blocks against the interest of Iran so that moderate and reformist elements in Iran grow and gradually transform Iran in a hybrid modest model of religious and modern developed country.

</excerpt>

Ebrahim Raisi’s political journey is deeply intertwined with Iran’s turbulent history, defined by the seismic shifts of the 1979 Islamic Revolution and its aftermath. This article aims to provide a comprehensive exploration of Raisi’s ascent to power, his involvement in contentious events like the 1988 mass executions, his tenure as president, and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.

Early Career and Rise to Prominence

Raisi’s foray into politics began in the aftermath of the revolution, where he quickly rose through the ranks of Iran’s judicial system. At the remarkably young age of 20, he was appointed as prosecutor-general for the provinces of Karaj and Hamadan, signalling the start of his meteoric rise in Iranian politics. However, his early career was also marred by allegations of persecution against religious minorities, particularly the Baha’is, underscoring the authoritarian nature of the newly established regime.

The Dark Legacy of “The Butcher of Tehran”

Perhaps the most notorious chapter of Raisi’s career unfolded in 1988, during which he played a central role in the mass executions of political prisoners following a ceasefire in the Iran-Iraq War. Serving as the deputy prosecutor of the Revolutionary Court of Iran, Raisi was among the youngest members of the clandestine “Death Commissions” responsible for orchestrating these executions. The scale of atrocities committed under his watch earned him the infamous moniker “The Butcher of Tehran” and drew widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and the international community.

Continued Political Ascendancy Despite Controversy

Despite facing vehement criticism and allegations of human rights abuses, Raisi’s political influence continued to ascend within Iran’s hierarchical power structure. He occupied key judiciary roles, including deputy head of the judiciary and prosecutor-general, further solidifying his position within Iran’s judicial apparatus. Raisi’s advocacy for Iran’s nuclear program exacerbated tensions with Western nations, resulting in the imposition of US sanctions on him for his purported involvement in human rights violations during the 1980s.

Domestic Repression and Crackdowns

Raisi’s presidency was marked by a pronounced authoritarian streak, characterized by severe crackdowns on dissent. The brutal suppression of protests following Mahsa Amini’s death in police custody in 2022 showcased the government’s uncompromising stance towards dissenting voices. The violent government response led to the deaths of over 500 protesters and the arbitrary detention of thousands, prompting widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and civil society groups.

Legacy and Controversy

Raisi’s legacy remains a subject of intense debate, reflecting sharply divergent perceptions within Iranian society. While some hail him as a steadfast defender of the Islamic Republic, others view him as a symbol of its oppressive and violent tactics. Despite his passing, Raisi’s influence continues to cast a long shadow over Iran’s political landscape, eliciting ongoing discourse and reflection on his complex and contentious legacy.

Ebrahim Raisi’s political journey from prosecutor to president encapsulates the tumultuous trajectory of Iran’s post-revolutionary era. His involvement in controversial events and his enduring legacy underscore the complexities of power and governance in the Islamic Republic, leaving a lasting impact on its political landscape for years to come.

</excerpt>

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, along with his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, was declared dead on Monday in a helicopter crash that took place on Sunday. Raisi, 63, was a hardliner. Before his death, Raisi was seen as a possible successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 85, Iran’s Supreme Leader. However, there is no reason to believe that Raisi’s death will mark the end of hardline Islamic rule in Iran. Raisi was a product of the system controlled by hardliners led by Khamenei, and that system is very much in place.

In the 1980s, Raisi, as a prosecutor, was infamous for allegedly sending to the gallows thousands of political prisoners. It was primarily because of this that he got the nickname “butcher of Tehran”. The election in which he emerged President in 2021, was perceived to have been tightly controlled in favour of the hardliners, with all moderate and pro-reforms rivals disqualified by the oversight body. The election was also marked by extremely low voter turnout, which added to the doubts on the legitimacy of the voting process.

As President, Raisi reinforced his image of a hardliner by standing by his “morality police”, known as the Gasht-e-Ershad or guidance patrols. It was because of the excesses committed by the morality police, whose job is to ensure that Iranians strictly follow the Islamic dress code—banning the wearing of tight trousers, torn jeans, exposure of knees, coloured clothes, apart from making the use of hijab mandatory for women—that the major uprising led by Iran’s women started in 2022. The protests started amid allegations of the morality police torturing to death the 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by them for not wearing her hijab “properly”. The protests spread like wildfire—led by Iran’s women of all ages, but soon supported by a large section of Iranian men. As social media got flooded with videos of black-clad men assaulting women with batons for removing their hijab, the protests intensified. It was for the first time ever that the Islamic regime faced such resistance from its people.

With the news of Raisi’s death, social media is overflowing with videos from Iran of men and women celebrating by lighting firecrackers and dancing. Such celebrations are taking place even in capital Tehran, the seat of the Islamic government. While the celebration of any death is abhorrent and must be condemned, the situation in Iran has to be seen from the perspective of the suffering of the people of Iran at the hands of the hardline regime.

Millions have disappeared, thousands have been tortured, maimed and killed during the rule of the repressive Islamic government over the decades—in fact from even before Raisi came to power. It is the common people who have suffered the most at the hands of their rulers and it is because of this there is a popular outpouring of happiness at the death of a man, who, to them, had come to represent the oppression that has been associated with the Islamic government over the decades. However, Raisi may be dead, but the system continues.

Already Ayatollah Khamenei has said that there will not be any disruption in Iran because of Raisi’s death. Vice President Mohammad Mokhber has been declared Interim President. Like Raisi, he too is believed to be close to Ayatollah Khamenei. Along with the speaker of the Parliament and the head of the judiciary, Mokhber is part of a three-member group that will organise a fresh election inside 50 days of the President’s death. Mokhber has his job cut out. His council has to ensure a free and fair election, where reformists and moderates are not disqualified because the hardliners need complete control of the state machinery, the way it happened in the last election. For how long can the regime keep the people chained in the shackles of fear? Sooner or later the resentment bubbling just below the surface will explode. The anti-hijab protests were a small trailer of what is likely to take place in the future if people’s grievances are not taken care of. In the 21st century, Iranians want to be a part of the modern world that is flying past them. They do not want to be bound by ancient and oppressive mores. Hence, it will be prudent on the part of the Iranian state to let the people have their say. The upcoming election must be free and fair. The people must be allowed to give their verdict on those who rule them. Else, the regime that came to power through the Islamic Revolution, might just fall victim to a people’s revolution.

The chopper, carrying officials, vanished in the mountains and crashed due to poor weather conditions.

In a statement, the US State Department offered official condolences and reiterated support for the Iranian people’s struggle for human rights and freedoms amid the selection of a new president. The crash claimed the lives of Raisi, Amir-Abdollahian, and seven others.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned Raisi’s death, acknowledging his efforts in strengthening India-Iran bilateral ties. Nine individuals were aboard the helicopter returning from a dam inauguration ceremony with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.

Iranian authorities convened an emergency session following the tragic incident. Drone footage showed the wreckage on a steep hillside, indicating slim chances of survival. This marks an unprecedented situation in Iran, with both the president and foreign minister lost in a helicopter crash.

</excerpt>

The recent helicopter crash that claimed the life of Iran President Ebrahim Raisi highlights the dire condition of many aircraft operating in the Islamic Republic, exacerbated by nearly five decades of US sanctions.

Ageing Aircraft Fleet

Iran has faced severe limitations in purchasing new aircraft or aircraft components from US or European suppliers since the 1979 revolution. As a result, both military and civilian operators in Iran rely on ageing vehicles and lack access to major manufacturers like Boeing Co. and Airbus SE.

Outdated Models Still in Operation

Iranian airlines continue to operate some of the oldest aircraft globally, with an average fleet age surpassing 25 years. Notably, some domestic services still utilize models that have long been retired elsewhere, including the McDonnell Douglas MD-83 and Airbus A300 and A310.

Example: Bell 212 Helicopter

The Bell 212 helicopter involved in President Raisi’s crash exemplifies the antiquity of Iran’s aircraft fleet. This US model, introduced in 1968 and discontinued in 1998, underscores the challenges faced by Iranian aviation due to limited access to modern aircraft technology.

Failed Efforts for Fleet Upgrades

Efforts to upgrade Iran’s aircraft fleet, such as Germany’s plans following the 2015 nuclear accord, were hindered by the collapse of the agreement during the Trump administration. As a result, Iran remains dependent on outdated aircraft models and struggles to access modern aviation technology.

Maintenance Challenges and Limited Resources

Iran’s reliance on ageing aircraft presents maintenance challenges, as engineers must find ways to keep them operational with limited access to new materials. While some supplies may be sourced from Russia and China, Iran lacks access to the most modern technology from the US and Europe.

Tragic Outcome and Environmental Factors

President Raisi’s helicopter crash, occurring during his return from an event on the Azerbaijan border, resulted in the loss of all nine occupants. Dense fog in the region compounded the difficulty of rescue efforts, highlighting the dangerous conditions faced by Iran’s ageing aircraft fleet.

</excerpt>

Following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has declared five days of public mourning and confirmed Mohammad Mokhber, the first vice president, as the interim head of the executive branch. Raisi, along with the country’s foreign minister and several others, perished in the crash, according to state media reports.

Following Article 131 of the Constitution, which dictates that the first vice president assumes temporary presidency in the event of the president’s death, Mokhber has stepped into this role. The transition of power has been confirmed by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Who is Mohammad Mokhber?

Mohammad Mokhber, born on September 1, 1955, shares a close relationship with supreme leader Ali Khamenei, wielding significant influence within Iranian political circles. He assumed the position of first vice president in 2021, coinciding with Raisi’s presidency.

Mokhber’s involvement in negotiations with Moscow in October, which facilitated agreements to provide surface-to-surface missiles and drones to Russia’s military, underscores his importance in Iran’s diplomatic and strategic endeavors. Notably, this delegation included officials from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and the Supreme National Security Council.

Previously, Mokhber headed Setad, an investment fund linked to the supreme leader, and faced sanctions from the European Union in 2010 for alleged involvement in nuclear or ballistic missile activities. However, he was later removed from the list in 2012. Furthermore, in 2013, the US Treasury Department sanctioned Setad and its associated companies.

Established under an order by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Setad manages properties abandoned after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, directing proceeds towards charitable causes. Mokhber’s ascendancy to the interim presidency marks a pivotal moment in Iranian politics, as the nation navigates through the aftermath of President Raisi’s untimely death.

</excerpt>

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi recently perished in a helicopter crash, an event that has triggered a political crisis and instability within the nation.

So according to the Iranian constitution, what will happen, if a president becomes incapacitated or dies in office. Here is the below outline: –

Under section 131 of the Islamic republic of Iran, the vice-president (currently Mohammad Mokhber) will take the responsibility, backed by the confirmation of the supreme leader. Who has final say in all matters related to Iran.

Later, a council comprising of first vice president, speaker of the parliament and the head of the judiciary must conduct an election within period of maximum 50 days.

However, what’s notable is, that presidential election in Iran has due in the year 2025, as Raisi was elected in 2021.

Coincidentally, according to the constitution, the election is expected to be conducted in July.

</excerpt>

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his Foreign Minister died in a helicopter crash while travelling across mountainous territory in dense fog. The plane carried Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian as well as the governor of the province of East Azerbaijan in Iran along with other officials and security guards. Raisi was on his way back from an excursion to the Iranian-Azerbaijani border, where he had assisted President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan in the groundbreaking of a dam.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, is thought to have Raisi as a favourite and possible heir to his post in the Shiite theocracy. The Iranian constitution announced that after Ebrahim Raisi’s death, the first vice president, Muhammad Mokhber, would become president. Iran’s activities won’t be affected by the disaster, Khamenei has publicly promised Iranians.

Israel has yet to provide an immediate official reaction. However, last month, in response to an Israeli strike on an Iranian consular building in Damascus that claimed the lives of two Iranian generals, Tehran retaliated with a barrage of missiles and drones directed at Israel. While most of these projectiles were intercepted, tensions seemed to have subsided since then. The escalation peaked last month when, under the leadership of Raisi and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran deployed numerous drones and ballistic missiles at Israel after an airstrike on an Iranian Consulate in Syria, resulting in casualties among Iranian military personnel, including two generals and five officers.

Why would the Middle East face issues as a result of the helicopter crash?

Every attack that is traded in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas—which has also involved other Iranian allies—raises the potential of a broader war.

Unexpected events could make this risky scenario worse, such as the disappearance of a helicopter carrying top officials.

Israel has always considered Iran to be its greatest threat since Tehran has ballistic missiles, a controversial nuclear programme, and support networks dedicated to destroying Israel.

Iran views itself as the main supporter of Palestinian resistance to Israeli domination, with Iranian authorities advocating for the annihilation of Israel.

Firm-minded Regarded as Khamenei’s successor apparent and protégé, Raisi attacked Israel last month, saying that “the Zionist Israeli regime has been committing oppression against the people of Palestine for 75 years.”

It is believed that Israel has attacked Iranian nuclear scientists and senior military officers on several occasions throughout the years.

Israel has not responded to the incident, and there is no evidence linking it to Sunday’s helicopter mishap.

The enduring apprehension that Persian Gulf Arab countries harbour towards Iran has also been a major factor in Saudi Arabia’s decision to investigate restoring diplomatic ties with Israel in 2020, as well as the UAE and Bahrain’s similar decision.

Iran has supported Hamas, which spearheaded the Oct. 7 raid into Israel that started the Gaza conflict, and the more radical but smaller Palestinian Islamic Jihad throughout the years with financial and other backing. However, there is no proof that Iran took a direct part in the assault.

Iran’s leaders have shown support for the Palestinians ever since the conflict began. Much more has been done by their regional partners. Since the beginning of the Gaza war, Israel and the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iran’s most sophisticated military ally, have been engaged in a low-intensity struggle. Tens of thousands of civilians have been forced to evacuate as a result of the nearly daily exchange of strikes between the two sides along the Israel-Lebanon border. Though it would be terrible for both countries, the issue hasn’t yet escalated into a full-fledged war.

Iran’s influence extends far beyond the Middle East and its ongoing rivalry with Israel

Suspicions surrounding Iran’s nuclear aspirations have persisted among Israel and Western nations, who fear that its ostensibly peaceful nuclear program might be a facade for developing nuclear weapons, thus posing a threat to global non-proliferation endeavors.

The withdrawal of then-President Donald Trump from the landmark nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers in 2018, along with the imposition of stringent sanctions, prompted Iran to gradually disregard the constraints set by the agreement. At present, Iran is enriching uranium to levels nearing 60% purity, edging closer to the threshold of weapons-grade purity at 90%. Moreover, Iran has interfered with surveillance cameras installed by the U.N. nuclear agency and limited access to its facilities for some of the agency’s most seasoned inspectors. Despite Iran’s insistence on the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, suspicions persist among the United States and other nations regarding Iran’s alleged active pursuit of nuclear weapons until 2003.

Although widely believed to possess nuclear capabilities, Israel has never formally acknowledged its possession of such weapons.

Additionally, Iran has cultivated a significant partnership with Russia, particularly in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Accusations have been leveled against Iran for supplying explosive drones that have inflicted considerable damage on Ukrainian cities, exacerbating tensions in the region.

</excerpt>

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash, as confirmed by an Iranian official and reported by Mehr news agency on Monday. The tragic incident has triggered the constitutional process for presidential succession in Iran.

According to Article 131 of the Islamic Republic’s constitution, when an Iran president dies in office, the first vice president, currently Mohammad Mokhber, assumes the presidential duties. This transition requires the confirmation of the supreme leader, who holds ultimate authority over state matters in Iran. Following this, a council comprising the first vice president, the speaker of parliament, and the head of the judiciary is responsible for organizing a presidential election within a maximum of 50 days.

Raisi, who was elected Iran president in 2021, was originally scheduled to serve until a presidential election in 2025. However, due to his untimely death, the constitutional rules mandate that the election must now be expedited, likely taking place by early July.

Jaishankar has expressed his condolences following the tragic deaths of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash in northwestern Iran. The helicopter, which also carried other officials, disappeared in the mountainous region.

Jaishankar, recalling his meetings with Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian from January this year, expressed his shock and sadness. “Deeply shocked to hear of the passing away of Iran’s President Dr. Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister H. Amir-Abdollahian, in the helicopter crash. Recall my many meetings with them, most recently in January 2024. Our condolences to their families. We stand with the people of Iran at this time of tragedy,” he stated on social media platform X.

According to state media outlet Press TV, Raisi, Amir-Abdollahian, and nine others onboard the helicopter perished in the crash on Sunday. Raisi was returning to Iran from a visit to Azerbaijan when the helicopter encountered severe weather conditions and crashed in the afternoon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his condolences, recognizing Raisi’s efforts in bolstering India-Iran relations. “Deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Following the announcement of the deaths, the Iranian cabinet held an emergency session led by Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, according to Press TV. Raisi was en route to Tabriz when the helicopter encountered heavy fog and crashed.

An Al Jazeera report highlighted the severity of the crash, noting that the helicopter wreckage was almost completely burned, making it unlikely for any survivors. “Looking at the wreckage of the helicopter, the chances of anyone surviving in such an accident are quite slim. We see that the whole cabin of the helicopter is completely burned,” the report stated. Iranian authorities indicated that some bodies were burned beyond recognition, complicating identification efforts at the crash site.

Drone footage from the Red Crescent, aired on state media, showed the crash site on a steep, wooded hillside with little remaining of the helicopter besides its blue and white tail.

This tragic incident marks an unprecedented situation for Iran, with the nation mourning the loss of both its president and foreign minister in a helicopter crash, as reported by Al Jazeera. Following the news, the Iranian government convened an urgent meeting, according to IRNA.

The helicopter carrying Raisi and his delegation crashed on Sunday in the Dizmar forest, situated between the cities of Varzaqan and Jolfa in East Azarbaijan Province, according to state media Press TV. Others aboard included the country’s foreign minister, Amir-Abdollahian, East Azarbaijan Governor, Malek Rahmati, Friday Prayers leader of Tabriz city, Seyyed Mohammad Ali Al-e Hashem, and a member of the president’s security team, Mahdi Mousavi, along with the helicopter’s pilot, co-pilot, and crew.

“Nine individuals were on the helicopter during the crash,” as reported by Tasnim News. Raisi and his delegation were returning from a dam inauguration ceremony on the Aras River with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.

“In the wake of the devastating news, the Iranian cabinet convened an emergency session led by Vice President Mohammad Mokhber,” according to Press TV. The tragic accident occurred as Raisi’s chopper encountered heavy fog en route to Tabriz city on Sunday afternoon.

“Reports from Al Jazeera indicated the grim reality of the wreckage, suggesting slim chances of survival in such a catastrophic accident. Iranian authorities mentioned difficulties in identifying the bodies due to severe burns,” as reported by the publication.

“Drone footage captured by the Red Crescent, as shown on state media, depicted the crash site on a steep, wooded hillside, with minimal remnants of the helicopter except for a blue and white tail,” as noted by CNN.

What Is the Chabahar Port Deal?

India and Iran have signed a long-term contract for operating the Shahid-Beheshti Port Terminal in Chabahar. This milestone agreement marks a deepening of ties between the two nations and aims to transform Chabahar Port into a crucial transit hub for trade with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries.

</excerpt>

After the Raisi helicopter crash, which was carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and only to be declared dead, Saudi Arabia expressed great concern and even offered assistance in the search for the helicopter on Sunday.

Issuing the statement, the foreign ministry of Gulf Kingdom said, “We affirm that the Kingdom stands by the sisterly Islamic Republic of Iran in these difficult circumstances and its readiness to provide any assistance that the Iranian agencies need.”

Meanwhile other gulf states like Qatar, Kuwait and United Arab Emirates too expressed their concerns and offered assistance.

Taking to X, Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman said, “Qatar expressed its “deep concern” over the helicopter carrying Iran’s president and foreign minister and offered “to provide all forms of support in the search.”

Later it also added, “Qatar’s wishes for the safety of the president, the foreign minister, and their companions.” said Gulf state’s spokesman Majed Al-Ansari.

Meanwhile, United Arab Emirates too declared, that it is ready to support search and rescue operation. While Kuwait also expressed their condolences saying, “it was standing “with the Islamic Republic of Iran in these difficult circumstances”.

These condolences come at a time when Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia and Shia-majority Iran have long clashed with each other in regional conflicts. Which has drastically affected other countries like Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

Earlier in 2016, bilateral relations between the two countries were severed due to an attack on Saudi’s diplomatic missions in Iran following Riyadh’s execution of Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

</excerpt>

Iranian authorities on Monday dispatched rescue teams to the crash site of a helicopter carrying Ebrahim Raisi after a Turkish drone, Akinci, detected a heat source in the area, as reported by Iran-based news network Press TV.

According to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, an Akinci UAV identified a heat source believed to be the helicopter wreckage and shared its coordinates with Iranian authorities. In hopes of locating the crash site, Iranian forces were also sent to an area where rescue teams had detected the smell of fuel, Press TV reported. However, Tasnim News later reported that the smell of car fuel was mistaken for helicopter fuel. Additionally, Russian search and rescue planes are heading to Tabriz in northwestern Iran.

The head of the Red Crescent Society explained, “The smell of fuel was the smell of the cars themselves, and our colleagues mistook the smell of the fuel of the cars with the smell of the helicopter fuel!” The Iran Red Crescent noted that over 70 search and rescue teams were near the site of President Raeisi’s helicopter crash.

CNN reported, citing the Turkish disaster and emergency management ministry, that Iran requested assistance from Turkey in the search for the helicopter. Turkey provided a night vision search and rescue helicopter, six vehicles, and 32 mountaineer search and rescue personnel.

Nine individuals were on the helicopter that crashed on Sunday in northwest Iran, including three officials, an imam, and flight and security team members, according to Tasnim News. The IRGC-run media outlet Sepah listed those on board: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Governor of Eastern Azerbaijan province Malek Rahmati, Tabriz’s Friday prayer Imam Mohammad Ali Alehashem, a pilot, copilot, crew chief, head of security, and another bodyguard.

Following the helicopter crash involving President Raisi, several countries offered assistance for the ongoing search operations. Russia announced it would send special aircraft and 50 professional mountain rescuers to the crash site in northern Iran, according to CNN, citing Iranian state news agency IRNA.

Meanwhile, Iranians have united in prayer for President Raeisi’s well-being. Prayer vigils have been held in mosques and shrines across the country, with large gatherings in the holy city of Mashhad, President Raeisi’s birthplace, as reported by Press TV Iran.

“Upon finding the helicopter, there was no sign of the helicopter passengers being alive as of yet,” state TV reported.

After hours of searching through mountainous terrain in challenging weather conditions, rescue teams located the crashed helicopter, which was almost completely destroyed. “President Raisi’s helicopter was completely burned in the crash,” an official told Reuters.

The helicopter crashed in Jolfa, a mountainous region in the northwestern part of the country, on Sunday. The incident occurred as Raisi and his entourage were returning from a visit to Iran’s border with Azerbaijan.

Following Raisi’s death, the next in line for the presidency is First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, pending approval by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

A total of nine people were aboard the helicopter, including Raisi, Abdollahian, three Iranian officials, an imam, and flight and security team members, CNN reported, citing Iranian media. Among the officials was the Governor of Eastern Azerbaijan province, Malek Rahmati.

Search efforts continued through the night and into Monday morning in East Azerbaijan province, hindered by dense fog and extreme cold.

One of Turkey’s ‘Akinci’ drones, sent to assist the rescue operations, reportedly identified a “source of heat suspected to be wreckage” of the helicopter, The Telegraph reported. A burning spot was detected, and rescue forces were dispatched to the area known as ‘Tavil,’ according to Iranian media. The Turkish drone shared its coordinates with Iranian authorities.

In addition to Turkey, Russia plans to send special aircraft and 50 professional mountain rescuers to the crash site to assist in the search operation. Two special Russian helicopters will be dispatched from Armenia, as ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Iranian state news agency IRNA.

Helicopter Crash in East Azerbaijan

A helicopter transporting Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi crashed in east Azerbaijan on Sunday, confirmed by Iranian authorities. The president, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, and two senior East Azerbaijan leaders were aboard.

Rescue efforts are underway, with state television reporting on the attempt to reach the crash site. Details regarding the incident remain scarce.

Ebrahim Raisi, often viewed as a protege of Iran’s supreme leader, has been a prominent figure in Iran’s Shiite theocracy. His involvement in the mass execution of prisoners in 1988 has drawn international condemnation and sanctions from the US and other nations.

Who is Ebrahim Raisi?

Raisi, a longtime prosecutor, was appointed chief justice by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in 2019. His past ties to the mass execution of political prisoners have raised human rights concerns, with Amnesty International highlighting his role in the “death commission” responsible for thousands of death sentences.

Raisi’s Presidency

In 2021, Raisi won the presidential election in a contest where his main opponents were barred from running. He campaigned on promises to address corruption and economic issues, particularly unemployment exacerbated by US sanctions.

Impact of Raisi’s Rule

Raisi’s presidency has seen tensions with the West, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear program. The 2015 nuclear deal, which offered Iran relief from sanctions in exchange for limits on nuclear activities, was abandoned by the US under former President Donald Trump. Talks to revive the deal continue, with President Joe Biden cautious about lifting sanctions.

Raisi’s administration has also been marked by a crackdown on dissent, including the violent suppression of protests and human rights abuses. The death of Mahsa Amini in 2022 sparked nationwide protests, with a UN panel holding Iran responsible for her death and the subsequent violence against protesters.

Ebrahim Raisi relation with PM Modi

The diplomatic relationship between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is characterized by shared interests and bilateral cooperation. Both leaders have engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing economic relations, particularly in sectors like trade, energy, and infrastructure development. Notably, Iran and India have collaborated on significant projects such as the Chabahar Port, which holds strategic importance for regional connectivity. The relationship also encompasses talks about cultural exchanges and regional security, reflecting the longstanding cooperation between the two nations. Here are some key points regarding the Iran-India relationship during Raisi’s presidency:

Historical Ties: Iran and India share deep historical and cultural bonds that have fostered cooperation across various fields.

Economic Cooperation: Both countries have sought to strengthen trade and investment ties, focusing on sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and agriculture.

Chabahar Port Development: The Chabahar Port project represents a major collaborative effort between Iran and India, aiming to establish a crucial trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia.

Energy Partnership: Iran serves as a significant crude oil supplier to India, and discussions on energy cooperation have been pivotal in their bilateral relationship.

Regional Stability: Iran and India share common interests in promoting stability and security in the region, particularly in Afghanistan, leading to dialogue and cooperation on various regional issues.

Multilateral Engagement: Both nations have collaborated in various multilateral forums to address global challenges and advance shared interests.

Diplomatic Exchanges: Diplomatic interactions between Iran and India have continued under Raisi’s presidency, with high-level visits and discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new areas of cooperation.

In conclusion, despite external factors such as international sanctions and geopolitical dynamics, the Iran-India relationship has remained resilient under President Ebrahim Raisi’s leadership, driven by historical ties, shared interests, and diplomatic engagement.

That is, the growth will be significant. Yes, we all understand that, to a large extent, India receives preferences due to discounts on Russian energy resources.
“If I were them, I would also do the same if the situation develops this way. They make money, and rightly so. But, of course, this is not enough. We have much more opportunities. In the global ranking of the world’s economies by purchasing power parity and by economic volume, India ranks third in this list and Russia fifth,” he added.

US President Joe Biden pledged support for Iranian women during his speech at the United Nations on Wednesday in light of the fact that at least eight people have died during the widespread protests that broke out in Iran after a woman died while in the custody of the police.

Following are the top five updates on Iranian protesters and what Joe Biden said:

1. “Today we stand with the brave folks and the brave women of Iran who right now are marching to achieve their basic rights,” Joe Biden said in a speech to the UN after Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

2. Iran had a flurry of protests following the passing of Mahsa Amini, 22, who had been detained by the nation’s morality police for reportedly donning a hijab headscarf in a “improper” manner.

3. Iranian authorities have refuted the assertion that Amini died as a result of a severe hit to her head.

4. In protests where there were a lot of women in attendance, protesters defiantly took off their hijabs and burned them in bonfires or symbolically chopped off their hair.

5. According to AFP, nationwide Internet services have been severely disrupted. According to Iranian state television, street protests had spread to 15 cities, and police had to use tear gas and make arrests to break up crowds of up to 1,000 people.
