This alliance comes at a crucial time for the JJP, which has been grappling with defections and is seeking to reinforce its political standing for the October elections. During a joint press conference held in Delhi on Tuesday, the two parties announced their agreement that JJP will contest 70 seats while ASP will field candidates for 20 seats in the upcoming assembly elections.

Having played a role of the kingmaker in 2019 assembly elections by wining 10 Eyeing Haryana’s Dalit vote bank, the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) has formed a pre-poll alliance with Uttar Pradesh-based Chandrashekhar Azad’s Azad Samaj Party (ASP) for the coming assembly elections in the state.

Having played a role of the kingmaker in 2019 assembly elections by wining 10 assembly seats, the 2024 elections assumes significance for the JJP as seven of its 10 MLAs have already parted ways, leaving the party in shambles.

In a show of solidarity, ASP’s lone elected representative and MP from Nagina of Uttar Pradesh, Chandrashekhar Azad referred to Dushyant Chautala as not just the “former Deputy Chief Minister” but also the “future Chief Minister” of Haryana.
Azad emphasized the alliance’s long-term vision, stating, “We will continue to champion the cause of farmers for the next 40-50 years. Our efforts will lay a strong foundation for Haryana’s future, enhance farmers’ incomes, and improve the education system.”
On this occasion, Dushyant Chautala launched a scathing attack on the JJP’s previous partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), particularly criticizing Chief Minister Nayab Saini for his inaction despite making numerous announcements. He made it clear that his party would not align with the BJP, saying, “I know how BJP breaks its allies”. He also assured voters, “If we have the numbers, we will form a government that stands against both the Congress and BJP. Our coalition aims to provide Haryana with a stable and progressive government.”

Chandrashekhar Azad echoed Chautala’s sentiments, expressing confidence that the JJP-ASP alliance would bring about significant change in Haryana. “The situation has changed and you will see the impact in Haryana,” he declared. He urged supporters to prepare for a “new revolution” in the state, adding, “When I spoke to Dushyant Chautala, I sensed his strong desire to lead Haryana forward. Together, we will fiercely advocate for farmers’ rights and usher in a new era.”

He outlined the key issues driving the alliance’s campaign, including employment for youth, relief from inflation for the poor, social justice, ending privatization, reservations in promotions, and securing Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for farmers. “We hope our alliance will win all 90 seats,” Azad confidently stated to the media.
Chandrashekhar said that despite lacking full governmental power, Dushayant Chautala had achieved much, including the establishment of a temple on five acres of land in Kurukshetra following the demolition of a Sant Ravidas temple in Delhi. Azad expressed confidence that the JJP-ASP alliance would realize the dreams of two leaders Devi Lal and Kanshi Ram by forming a complete government this time.

</excerpt>

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Monday took a swipe at former Deputy Chief Minister and JJP Chief Dushyant Chautala over his recent statement declaring that he would not ally with the BJP in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. Responding to Chautala’s comments, Khattar quipped, “Who invited him?”

Expressing confidence in the BJP’s prospects, Khattar asserted that the party will secure a third consecutive term in Haryana under his leadership. “BJP will form the government in Haryana for the third time, setting a new record. We will achieve victory under the leadership of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini,” Khattar said, emphasizing the party’s strength.

Chautala, during an interview on Sunday, declared that the JJP would not form an alliance with the BJP in the upcoming polls. “I can on record assure you that I will not go with BJP again,” Chautala stated. He further claimed that the JJP would emerge as the “most important” political force in the state in the days to come.

Following the 2019 Assembly elections, the BJP formed the government in Haryana with the support of 10 JJP MLAs, resulting in Chautala becoming the Deputy Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini also weighed in on the matter, suggesting that the Congress aims to weaken the JJP. He advised Chautala to remain steadfast and avoid aligning with the Congress, specifically cautioning against any association with Deepender Hooda. “BJP will win with a full majority in the state assembly election. I just want Chautala ji to stay strong and not incline towards Hooda ji,” Saini remarked.

The Haryana Assembly, comprising 90 seats, is set to go to the polls on October 1, with results expected on October 4. The political landscape remains charged, with key alliances and rivalries shaping up ahead of the election.

</excerpt>

 Opposition accuses BJP of fear and manipulation, Election Commission’s decision awaited.

In a dramatic twist ahead of the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, a letter from Haryana BJP president Mohan Lal Badoli to the Chief Election Officer seeking brief postponement of the October 1 Assembly polls has ignited a political firestorm.

The BJP’s request comes on the heels of the sudden election announcement last week, which caught many by surprise. Interestingly, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has thrown its weight behind the BJP, also writing to the Election Commission to support the deferment. However, the Congress, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have vehemently opposed the move, insisting that the elections should proceed as scheduled.

Congress leader Deepender Hooda took to X (formerly Twitter) to lambast the BJP, accusing them of running scared. “The BJP’s request to the Election Commission to postpone the elections reveals their fear of impending defeat. They are resorting to childish excuses because they have no issues to present, no achievements to showcase, and not even 90 worthy candidates to contest. The voters of Haryana are aware and won’t be distracted by holidays; they will turn up in large numbers to oust the BJP,” Hooda declared. He further asserted, “Changing the election date won’t change the minds of the people of Haryana. The BJP is on its way out, and Congress is coming in.”

JJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala also criticized the BJP, arguing that the party’s plea to delay the elections stems from a fear of early voting. Speaking in Jind, Chautala expressed confidence that the Election Commission would not entertain the BJP’s request. “The BJP’s support has dwindled so much that they may not even secure 20 seats. On October 1, Haryana voters will show their anger by voting the BJP out of power,” he predicted.

AAP Haryana president Sushil Gupta echoed these sentiments, stating, “The days of the BJP and JJP are numbered. Their defeat is inevitable, which is why BJP leaders are now talking about extending the election date.”

Meanwhile, BJP leaders have been defending their request, arguing that the proposed election date of October 1 could see a dip in voter turnout due to the holidays. Senior BJP leader Anil Vij further clarified, “We are not demanding a delay; the polls can be advanced as well. The concern is that October 1 falls in the middle of a holiday period.”

In his letter, BJP state president Badoli expressed concern that many voters might be away from their constituencies during the extended weekend, which could lead to reduced participation in the elections.

Political observers suggest that the BJP’s concern may be rooted in the fact that urban voters, who traditionally form a significant part of the party’s base, are more likely to travel during long weekends.

As the debate rages on, Haryana’s Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal has forwarded the letters to the Election Commission, with a decision on the matter expected by Tuesday. The outcome of this request would not only have far-reaching implications for the political fortunes of political parties, but any change in the date of polling day, may also led to change in the entire election schedule-including the counting of vote which is scheduled for October 4.

</excerpt>

Once dominant in Haryana, Chautala family grapples with internal rifts and diminished influence ahead of assembly polls.

Once the powerhouse of Haryana politics, the Chautala clan, descendants of the late Devi Lal, now finds itself fighting for political survival. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), a party founded by Devi Lal has seen a sharp decline from its former glory, thanks to the split caused in the Chautala family after formation of Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) in 2018, led by OP Chatuala’s grandson Dushyant Chautala.

Smashed by the split, INLD managed to win only one seat in 2019, with its vote share plummeting from 24.11% in 2014 to a mere 2.44%. In a desperate bid to regain lost ground in 2024 with the help of Dalit and Jat combine, now the INLD has forged an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), ceding a significant 37 out of 90 seats to its new partner.

The decline of INLD is rooted in a bitter family feud that led to a split in the party. The rift became public during a rally on October 7, 2018, organized to mark the 105th birth anniversary of Devi Lal. Supporters of Dushyant Chautala, the grandson of Devi Lal, demanded his candidature for Chief Minister, leading to a showdown that eventually split the party. Dushyant, along with his father Ajay Chautala, went on to form the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) in December 2018, shattering the dreams of his grandfather, OP Chautala, who was aiming for a comeback in the 2019 elections.

Despite being a fledgling party, JJP secured 10 seats in the 2019 Assembly elections, emerging as a kingmaker in a hung assembly. However, Dushyant’s decision to ally with the BJP, despite his supporters voting against it, has cost him dearly. The alliance, which secured him the Deputy Chief Minister’s post, ended abruptly in March 2024, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. This has led to a mass exodus from JJP, with seven of its MLAs deserting the party.

The BJP’s strategy of appointing two non-Jat Chief Ministers in Haryana has further eroded the Chautalas’ influence. The once-dominant Jat community, traditionally loyal to the INLD, is now split between the Congress, INLD, and JJP. The political dynamics in Haryana have shifted, leaving the Chautala family struggling to maintain its relevance.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, both JJP and INLD failed to secure any seats, with the BJP and Congress each winning five of Haryana’s 10 seats. In the Jat-dominated Hisar seat, Congress candidate Jai Prakash defeated three Chautala family members, dealing another blow to the family’s political ambitions.

Even the political observers still believe that a merger between INLD and JJP, could have worked better uniting the worker and voters. But on ground such a merger seems unlikely due to deep-seated animosity within the family. Moreover, Abhay Chautala’s open accusation of Dushyant betraying both his grandfather and party members, underscores the ongoing rift taking it to the next level.

As Haryana approaches the Assembly polls on October 1, the Chautala clan confronts its most formidable challenge yet—attempting to reclaim a legacy that has eroded in a political landscape transformed over the past five years. The BJP’s decision to appoint two non-Jat Chief Ministers has intensified the divide between Jat and non-Jat communities, further complicating the Chautalas’ efforts to regain their former influence.

</excerpt>

The ongoing political tussle in Haryana has intensified as Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala has once again accused former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda of colluding with the BJP ahead of the crucial Rajya Sabha by-election.

The election, necessitated by Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda’s move to the Lok Sabha, is set for September 3, with the deadline for nominations looming on August 21.
Dushyant Chautala, in a pointed attack, questioned Hooda’s decision not to field a Congress candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat. “The final date for filing nominations for the Haryana Rajya Sabha by-election is August 21. Now even 4-5 of our MLAs (who deserted JJP) have become Congressmen. The Congress candidate is now close to winning the election. If Bhupinder Hooda doesn’t have a secret understanding with the BJP, then he should field a candidate in the Rajya Sabha election. We have already promised to vote against the BJP,” Chautala posted on X (formerly Twitter).

He further intensified his criticism with a Hindi verse, “Jail Ke Dar Se Bar-Bar Bikta Rahe, Udhar Ka Ho Aur Idhar Ka Dikhta Rahe” (For fear of jail, he keeps selling himself repeatedly; he belongs to one side but appears to be on the other).

The Rajya Sabha election was necessitated by the vacancy created after Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda moved to the Lok Sabha. The BJP, aware of the implications this election may have on the forthcoming state assembly elections likely to be held in October, is carefully weighing its options, considering both caste dynamics and electoral impact.
Bhupinder Singh Hooda has publicly stated on multiple occasions that the Congress would not field a candidate due to the party’s insufficient numbers to guarantee a victory. Hooda had previously indicated that the party might reconsider if JJP’s 10 MLAs assured their votes for the Congress candidate.

The political landscape in Haryana has witnessed a significant shift with the announcement of the assembly election schedule. Seven MLAs from the JJP-former alliance partner of the BJP, have defected, many expressing intentions to join Congress. This development has sparked concerns within Congress regarding cross-voting, especially as the party’s strength in the assembly has dwindled from the 31 seats it secured in the 2019 elections. The recent defection of Congress MLA Kiran Choudhary to the BJP has further compounded these worries. Despite Dushyant Chautala’s allegations, both Bhupinder Singh Hooda and the Congress have maintained a strategic silence, refraining from responding to the charges. However, political observers suggest that Congress’s hesitation to field a candidate might stem from the fear of internal defections and cross-voting, potentially weakening their position even further. As the Rajya Sabha election draws near, all eyes remain on the unfolding political drama in Haryana, with the outcome likely to set the tone for the upcoming assembly elections.

As per the schedule the nomination deadline is August 21, with voting set for September 3 from 9 AM to 4 PM. Results are expected to be announced on the same day, setting the stage for a high-stakes electoral battle.

</excerpt>

Former Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana Dushyant Chautala has called the budget presented by the Central Government as a management budget to save the Central Government and not a budget in the interest of the common man. He said that the Union Budget has focused only on Andhra Pradesh and Bihar and the state of Haryana has been completely ignored. He said that this is the worst budget ever.

Former Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala said that the NDA government of the country has not only discriminated against the states but this budget has disappointed every section including the poor, farmers, laborers, youth. Dushyant Chautala said that the BJP, which has been running the central government for 10 years, has not made any mention of giving permanent jobs to the youth in the budget, the youth have only been misled by giving them the assurance of loans. He said that the government neither paid any special attention to the higher education of the youth in the budget nor did it make any provision for digital library etc. towards improving the education system at the rural level.

Dushyant Chautala said that for the last five years, the Modi government has been continuously reducing the agriculture budget, which today seems to be half as compared to the year 2019. He said that in 2019, there was a provision of 5.44 percent of the total budget for agriculture, which has been reduced to around three percent this time. The former Deputy CM said that due to the low agriculture budget, the government will not be able to implement any major scheme for farmers in the future, in such a situation how will the income of farmers double? Dushyant Chautala said that the limit of Kisan Credit Card for farmers has not been increased by the government, which should have been increased from three lakh to 10 lakh in the interest of farmers.

Former Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala said that by not giving any special exemption in income tax, the central government has broken the back of the employees and the middle class. He said that the budget is only a shadow of slogans because the public is troubled by inflation and the government is busy hiding the real figures of inflation with slogans. Further, Chautala said that the government has not taken any step in the budget to guarantee a safe market to MSMEs in the direction of promoting India’s products abroad, which is a setback for small entrepreneurs. He also said that the marginal increase in the budget of the Sports Ministry by the Central Government is insufficient to promote sports.

</excerpt>

Dushyant Chautala, leader of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), has requested a floor test against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Haryana, following the withdrawal of support by three Independent MLAs from the Nayab Singh Saini government. The JJP, a former ally of the BJP, has expressed readiness to assist the Congress in toppling the BJP government in the state.

On May 7, the Haryana government faced a setback when three Independent MLAs withdrew their support, putting the government in a minority. The MLAs who withdrew their support are Randhir Golan from Pundri, Dharmpal Gonder from Nilokheri, and Sombir Singh Sangwan from Charkhi Dadri, all of whom have extended their support to the Congress.

Chautala stated to news agency ANI, “The government that was formed two months back is now in the minority because two of the MLAs who supported them – one from the BJP and the other an Independent MLA – have resigned. Three Independent MLAs who were supporting them have withdrawn their support and have written to the Governor. The JJP has clearly said that if a no-confidence motion is brought against this government, we will support the motion. We have also written to the Governor about it. Now, the Congress has to take this step (seeking a floor test). The Congress will have to decide if they are going to take any steps to corner the current BJP government or not.”

He further added that if the state government does not have the majority, the governor should implement President’s Rule in Haryana. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, however, has insisted that his government is not in any jeopardy, and former CM ML Khattar claimed that many MLAs are in contact with the BJP, indicating there is “nothing to worry” about.

These political developments have unfolded at a critical juncture, with Lok Sabha polls just two weeks away and assembly elections scheduled for October. The Haryana assembly currently has an effective strength of 88 members, with two seats vacant. The BJP holds 40 seats, the Congress 30, and the JJP 10, with one member each from the INLD and Haryana Lokhit Party. There are also six Independent MLAs, two of whom are supporting the government. Independent MLA Nayan Pal Rawat confirmed that he has been providing unconditional support to the BJP since 2019.

</excerpt>

Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) leader Dushyant Chautala has written to the Haryana Governor, asserting that his party does not support the BJP government and is open to backing any political party for government formation.

In his communication to the Governor, Chautala reiterated his party’s stance of not supporting the BJP government, signaling a divergence from their previous coalition ties. This move comes amidst growing speculation about the stability of the current government in Haryana and the potential for realignments ahead of crucial political decisions.

This development is likely to have ripple effects across the state’s political spectrum, with various parties assessing their options and weighing potential alliances to secure a stable government. The coming days are expected to witness heightened political activity as parties jockey for position and seek to consolidate their influence in Haryana’s political landscape.

As Chautala’s letter to the Governor reverberates through the political corridors, it raises questions about the future course of governance in Haryana and the dynamics of coalition politics in the region.

</excerpt>

Former deputy CM Dushyant Chautala on Wednesday announced that the JJP, previously aligned with the BJP, is now willing to back the Congress-led opposition in a move to overthrow the Nayab Singh Saini government in Haryana. Chautala also cautioned his MLA colleagues that failing to comply with the party’s directive to support the saffron party could lead to disqualification. This statement follows the withdrawal of support by three Independent MLAs from the BJP-led coalition, leaving it with 43 members in the 88-member assembly, considering the resignations of former CM Manohar Lal Khattar and Independent MLA Ranjit Singh Chautala in March.

Saini asserted that his government faces no imminent danger, despite the coalition falling two seats short of a majority. He maintained confidence that his administration would successfully complete its tenure without encountering any significant obstacles. “We weren’t a minority govt earlier and are not a minority now,” he said in Sirsa.

Haryana, gearing up for state elections in October, finds the BJP government technically secure for now, although the withdrawal of support by three Independents could impact the party’s prospects in the upcoming Lok Sabha poll. With the state voting in the fifth phase on May 25, the BJP faces the challenge of retaining all 10 seats it secured in 2019.

Dushyant, JJP’s national senior vice-president, stated at his residence in Hisar that the party intends to urge the governor to demand a floor test from the BJP government to prove its majority. While the rulebook specifies a six-month gap before a no-confidence motion can be tabled against any government, Dushyant emphasized that CM Saini should either demonstrate his majority in the assembly or step down promptly.

The three Independents, Sombir Sangwan (Dadri), Randhir Singh Gollen (Pundri), and Dharampal Gonder (Nilokheri), who withdrew support from the government, announced their backing for the Congress, which holds 30 MLAs in the House.

Dushyant warned JJP MLAs against defying the party’s whip, citing the example of rebel Congress legislators in Himachal Pradesh who faced consequences for opposing their party during the Rajya Sabha election. He mentioned that notices have been issued to three MLAs for sharing the stage with rival parties. One of them could be JJP’s Narwana MLA Ramniwas Surjakhera, who supported BJP’s Sirsa candidate Ashok Tanwar at a rally in his constituency, where CM Saini led the campaign. Surjakhera had previously attended a rally by former CM Khattar, BJP’s nominee for the Karnal seat.

Khattar played down the withdrawal of support by the three Independent MLAs, stating during roadshows in Nilokheri and Indri that such developments were commonplace in politics.

“It’s election time, someone will join the party while someone will quit. It doesn’t matter. Many MLAs are in contact with us. Hence, there’s nothing to stress about,” he said.

</excerpt>

JJP leader Dushyant Chautala announced on Wednesday that his party would vote against the BJP in a no-confidence motion, following the BJP government in Haryana losing its majority when three independent MLAs withdrew their support.

Chautala stated, “All our MLAs will vote against the BJP government, if no-confidence motion is moved by the Leader of Opposition, Bhupinder Singh Hooda,” during a press conference.

The Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), a splinter group of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), holds 10 seats in the 90-seat Haryana assembly. The party had formed a coalition government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in October 2019 but parted ways in March this year.

Formerly the deputy chief minister in the alliance government, Chautala also expressed support for the Congress if they sought to bring down the government, stating, “The LoP must topple the government within the Lok Sabha polls. We have whip; all our MLAs are bound to it. They will follow the party’s decision.”

Chautala criticized Nayab Singh Saini, Khattar’s successor as CM, calling him a “weak CM.” Saini took office after Khattar resigned in March.

Responding to Chautala, senior Congress leader and former CM Bhupinder Hooda challenged the JJP to demonstrate that it was not a “B-team” of the BJP. He stated, “If they are not the B-team, they must write to the Governor immediately. We demand imposition of President’s rule and elections must be held.”

Haryana is scheduled to hold elections in October to choose its next government.

</excerpt>

Renowned BJP leader in Haryana and former Union minister Chaudhry Birendra Singh officially joined the Congress on Tuesday, following his son Brijendra Singh’s recent switch to the party. The joining ceremony took place at the Congress headquarters in the national capital, with the notable presence of leaders like Randeep Surjewala and Pawan Khera. Birendra Singh’s wife, Premlata Singh, also joined the party alongside him.

In his remarks at the event, Singh emphasized that his return to the Congress signifies a return to ideology. He criticized the BJP’s approach in Haryana over the past decade, stating, “In the last ten years, you (BJP) did not make anybody your own.” He described the move not just as a return to the party but also as a revival of ideology.

Birendra Singh, who previously served as Union steel minister and held other ministerial portfolios, including rural development and Panchayati Raj, had also been a minister in the Congress-led government in Haryana.

His son, Brijendra Singh, who is the incumbent MP from Hisar, resigned from the Lok Sabha and BJP to join the Congress last month, citing compelling political reasons. The father-son duo had previously diverged from the BJP’s stance on various issues, including extending support to protesting farmers and expressing solidarity with wrestlers.

Brijendra’s decision to leave the BJP was influenced by factors such as the party’s alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) led by Dushyant Chautala. Despite winning the Hisar seat by a significant margin in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the subsequent alliance with JJP and the entry of former MP Kuldeep Bishnoi into the BJP posed challenges.

With the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, alliances and political realignments in Haryana, such as the AAP-Congress alliance, are shaping the state’s political landscape. The state, currently under the BJP-led NDA, will witness intense political activity as parties prepare for the single-phase polls scheduled for May 25, with results expected on June 4.

</excerpt>

The chief of the Janata Jannayak Party (JJP) and Deputy Chief Minister, Dushyant Chautala, has officially announced the termination of the alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Haryana. Following his arrival in Delhi, he confirmed the dissolution of the alliance in the state. Speculation about the alliance’s breakdown had been circulating, and Chief Minister Manohar Lal, along with the entire cabinet, submitted their resignations.

JJP had been pushing for two seats from BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. With the alliance now dissolved, BJP is expected to establish a new government in Haryana by forming a fresh cabinet. Independent MLAs may participate in a lottery to secure positions in the Haryana Cabinet, and the swearing-in of new ministers is anticipated later today.

Earlier reports indicated that Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala had traveled to Delhi to meet with the high command. His discussions were expected to include a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah to address the alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Prior to this, he had also met with JP Nadda in Delhi. The primary point of contention leading to the alliance’s breakdown was JJP’s demand for 1 to 2 seats from BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, a proposal that BJP was unwilling to accept, ultimately leading to the dissolution of the alliance.
