The incidents, including vandalism and theft, have left the Hindu population feeling vulnerable. Bangladesh police have arrested 17 individuals related to these disturbances.
</excerpt>

India expressed deep concern on Saturday regarding attacks on Hindu temples and mandaps in Bangladesh during the ongoing Durga Puja festival. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a strong statement condemning the desecration of these sacred sites and urging the Bangladeshi government to protect its minority Hindu population.

The MEA specifically noted the attack on a Puja mandap in Tantibazar, Dhaka, and the theft at the revered Jeshoreshwari Kali temple in Satkhira. “These are deplorable events,” the statement read, highlighting a systematic pattern of vandalism against temples and deities observed in recent days. The ministry called for prompt action to ensure the safety of all minorities during the significant Hindu festival.

These comments came after a series of incidents, including theft and vandalism targeting Hindu religious sites in Bangladesh. On Friday night, a firebomb was reportedly thrown at the Tantibazar temple, causing panic among worshippers. Although no casualties were reported, media outlets indicated that five individuals sustained injuries during the ensuing chaos.

Amid the Durga Puja celebrations, a handcrafted golden mukut (crown) presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was stolen from a temple in Satkhira. In response to around 35 violent incidents this month, Bangladeshi police arrested 17 individuals. Inspector General of Police Md Moinul Islam assured that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will take stringent action against those attempting to incite unrest.

The attacks have left Bangladesh’s Hindu community, which constitutes roughly 8% of the country’s 170 million population, feeling increasingly vulnerable. Dhaka resident Ankita Bhowmick voiced her frustration, stating, “We won’t need any security if everyone has the mentality that individuals can practice their religion according to their customs. There will be no fear.”

Couple Confirms The Split

On September 28, Taneja addressed the separation rumors in an Instagram post, confirming the split without providing a formal statement. He emphasized that “social media is not a place to discuss family matters,” expressing hope that “everything will be sorted soon.” Taneja also mentioned that men are “made villains very fast” by society and preferred not to give a public explanation for their children’s sake.

Ritu Rathee shared a separate post shortly afterward, acknowledging the issues in their marriage and stating they might not resolve them. In her video titled “Divorce Reality Check,” she criticized those spreading rumors, stating, “A small thing happened between a husband and wife. He thought he was right, I thought I was right. He became stubborn, and so did I,” and asked followers not to villainize Taneja.

Speculation on Reddit about their relationship intensified following the couple’s latest photo, with users discussing whether they are repairing their relationship. One user noted, “They are doing damage control now,” while another remarked, “People can decide to separate and co-parent amicably OR reconcile.”

Social Media Backlash

The model shared photos on Instagram where she is seen posing with two friends at the Durga Puja pandal. One friend wore a long black gown with a thigh-high slit, while the other opted for an orange minidress with knee-length boots. Social media users quickly deemed the trio’s outfits as “indecent” and “vulgar,” with comments pouring in across platforms like X (formerly Twitter). Many felt the clothes were disrespectful to the sanctity of the religious site.

A Divided Opinion

One X user wrote, “Call me regressive, but this is outright stupid.” Another person questioned, “Isn’t it basic common sense to dress accordingly when visiting a temple?” Meanwhile, activist Deepika Bhardwaj also shared the photo, which has since gone viral. Some users wondered if the image had been edited, while others called for stricter dress codes at religious sites to prevent such incidents in the future.

The debate has sparked discussions on cultural sensitivity and appropriate attire at religious events, with opinions sharply divided over the incident.

The Classic Red & White Saree

The red and white saree is synonymous with Durga Puja. Bollywood icons like Kajol and Vidya Balan have often embraced this timeless combination, paying homage to the festival’s Bengali roots. Opt for a cotton or silk saree with a red border, pairing it with a traditional red bindi, gold jhumkas, and bangles. This classic look exudes elegance while staying true to tradition.

Banarasi Silk Glam

Banarasi silk sarees are a Bollywood favorite for their luxurious texture and regal appeal. Stars like Deepika Padukone and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have flaunted Banarasi sarees during festive events, making them a must-have for Durga Puja. Choose a bold red, gold, or green Banarasi saree, and pair it with statement temple jewelry for a royal look. A sleek bun adorned with jasmine flowers and bold kohl-lined eyes can enhance the festive charm

Kanjeevaram Sarees for a Regal Look

For those seeking opulence, Bollywood divas like Rekha have made Kanjeevaram sarees iconic. Their rich, vibrant colors and intricate zari work make them ideal for festive occasions. A traditional Kanjeevaram saree in hues like deep red, maroon, or gold, paired with heavy gold jewelry, can make you the star of the celebrations.

Pastel Shades for Modern Appeal

If you want to add a contemporary twist to your Durga Puja saree look, take inspiration from Alia Bhatt and Sonam Kapoor, who have been seen in pastel sarees. A pastel silk or chiffon saree in shades like mint green, blush pink, or lavender can bring a fresh, modern vibe to the traditional look. Minimalist jewelry and soft makeup complete the ensemble for a more subtle yet chic appearance.

Bengali Drape with a Bollywood Twist

To truly channel the spirit of Durga Puja, embrace the traditional Bengali drape. Bollywood actresses like Rani Mukerji have popularized this elegant style. Pair it with red lips, a bold bindi, and gold ornaments for a striking yet graceful look.

This Durga Puja, embrace Bollywood-inspired saree styles that blend tradition with modern glamour. From the timeless red and white saree to opulent Banarasis and modern pastels, there’s a perfect look for every festive mood.

Durga Puja Celebrated for the First Time at Times Square

In a remarkable and historic event, the vibrant festival of Durga Puja was celebrated for the first time at New York’s iconic Times Square. The celebration drew in people from all backgrounds and communities, captivating not only those present but also viewers across the globe. Many, including people in India, were stunned to witness the event through numerous videos shared on social media. One particular video, posted by an Indian-origin woman who grew up in the United States, has garnered attention for capturing her emotional experience of attending Durga Puja at Times Square, especially as someone with Bengali heritage.

An Emotional Connection to Her Roots

Content creator Sumona Seth, who shared her thoughts on the occasion, described the energy of the event as both nostalgic and fresh. “The energy was both new and familiar, like a warm echo of memories I didn’t know I had. The little Bengali girl in me couldn’t contain her excitement and joy, the kind that makes your soul dance,” Seth expressed. She also opened up about her personal struggle of balancing her identity as a Bengali growing up in the U.S.

She further added, “Growing up in New York, I was always caught between my two worlds—rooted deeply in my desi Bengali culture and traditions, yet shaped by New York City’s restless pulse. I often felt like I didn’t quite belong—I was too desi for America, too American for my South Asian folks.” The Durga Puja celebration at the heart of the bustling city offered her a unique and deep connection to her roots, which was vividly captured in her video, showcasing the grandeur of the festival.

A video shared by user Abir Ghoshal on X (formerly Twitter) showcases a metro-themed puja pandal in Kolkata, leaving viewers astounded. The video opens with the pandal’s entrance, designed to resemble a real metro station, complete with seats, handrails, and grab handles. It features screens displaying announcements typical of a metro environment, along with a platform and escalators that make it hard to distinguish from an actual metro station.

Metro Station Comes to Life in Kolkata

Set up at Jagat Mukherjee Park, this innovative pandal has been meticulously crafted to provide visitors with an authentic experience akin to being inside a Green Line metro coach. “It took months of research and multiple trips in the metro for us to engineer this authentic feel,” said Dwaipayan Roy, one of the chief organizers.

A Collective Artistic Effort

Artist Subal Pal explained that their team even consulted with Metro Rail authorities to refine their concept, resulting in an impressive homage to Kolkata’s metro system. The pandal includes a motor that simulates the sensation of a moving train, allowing visitors to feel the train slow down as they approach the exit gate. “Engineers and artists came together to accomplish the final product,” Pal added.

The video, shared on October 7, has already garnered over 850,000 views and continues to attract attention. Reactions poured in, with many praising the creativity while others expressed concerns about potential overcrowding.

Reactions from the Online Community

Commenters on social media were quick to share their thoughts on the pandal. “It’s truly iconic,” remarked one user, while another exclaimed, “Wow! That is so amazing.”

Yet, some users raised safety concerns, suggesting that the narrow design might lead to claustrophobic conditions in crowded situations. One user noted, “This is so narrow, could be claustrophobic if a lot of crowd comes. Hope there’s no stampede,” while another echoed similar sentiments.

The two-day celebration, held at the Gaelic Athletic Association hall, will feature cultural performances, traditional activities, and food stalls serving Bengali and Irish cuisine, highlighting the vibrant Bengali heritage in Ireland.
</excerpt>

Dan Boyle, the Lord Mayor of Cork, will inaugurate the city’s first Durga Puja, organized by the local Bengali community, on October 12.

“We’re excited to host Durga Puja in Cork for the first time,” said Rajasree Das Banerjee, one of the event organizers. With approximately 50 Bengali families in the area, the community has come together to prepare for the festivities. Rajasree, who has lived in Ireland for several years and hails from Alipurduar, noted that the preparations have garnered significant enthusiasm from both Bengalis and other Indians residing in Cork.

The puja will take place at the Gaelic Athletic Association hall under the auspices of the Cork Sarbojonin Durgatsab Committee. A five-foot Durga idol has been ordered from Kumartuli in Kolkata, and Rajasree expressed excitement about its arrival.

Unlike the traditional four-day celebration in Bengal, the Cork event will be held over two days. Rajasree is overseeing decorations, food, and cultural programs, emphasizing the importance of preserving Bengali traditions during the celebration.

Following the Lord Mayor’s inauguration, cultural performances are scheduled, including a children’s drama and women singing Rabindra Sangeet. Traditional activities such as dhunuchi naach and sindoor khela will also take place.

Attendees can look forward to prasad being served at the venue, along with food stalls offering both Bengali and Irish cuisine. Rajasree shared an amusing moment when a local chef learned to prepare khichri, a dish unfamiliar to him initially. “We’re curious to see how he manages it,” she added.

The celebration of Durga Puja in Bangladesh has encountered significant obstacles, with the interim government and various Muslim organizations denying permissions in several locations.

Interim Government’s Restrictions

Organizing committees have reportedly been instructed to maintain silence during the Namaaz prayers and are required to pay ₹5 lakh each as a form of ‘jizya’, a tax historically levied on non-Muslims. These restrictions follow multiple reports of vandalism and looting of idols throughout the country.

Threats to Puja Committees

According to a report by the Daily Star in late September, several Durga Puja committees have received threat letters demanding a payment of ৳5,00,000 to hold their celebrations. Additionally, numerous Hindu temples in the Dakop area of Khulna have lodged police complaints after receiving similar threats.

Sound Restrictions During Prayers

The Dhaka Tribune reported last month that the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has advised Puja committees to keep their musical instruments and sound systems turned off during Azaan and Namaaz. This directive was issued by Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury following a law and order meeting.

Increased Violence Against Minorities

Bangladesh has experienced a rise in violence against minority groups since the Sheikh Hasina government fell in early August. The new administration claims that these attacks are politically motivated. Officials have pointed to inadequate security measures and expressed concerns about restricting the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations. However, senior members of the government have reassured the public that worshippers will still have the opportunity to celebrate the festival.

Government’s Stance on Durga Puja

In a recent interaction with ANI, Mohammed Touhid Hossain, Bangladesh’s foreign affairs advisor, remarked, “This is quite strange. There could be a fringe that may not like Durga Puja. Durga Puja has been performed in this country for ages, and there have been no instances when Durga Puja was not held. Certainly, the worshippers who want to do so have the opportunity to do so. There should be no doubt about this.”

What Is Jizya?

Jizya is a historical tax imposed on non-Muslims living under Islamic rule, derived from Islamic law and mentioned in the Quran. Traditionally, it was collected in exchange for protection and exemption from military service. While jizya was practiced in various Islamic empires, its contemporary application is rare and often viewed as discriminatory. Calls for its reinstatement can lead to significant political and social tensions, especially regarding the treatment of minority communities.

</excerpt>

As Durga Puja approaches, reports indicate that radical Islamic groups in Bangladesh are intensifying their campaign against the Hindu minority, urging them to refrain from celebrating the festival. The growing unrest has raised significant concerns about the safety and rights of Hindus in the country.

Protests Against Durga Puja Celebrations

Several Islamic groups have organized protests, demanding restrictions on the celebration of Durga Puja, which they claim causes disruption and environmental harm. Demonstrators have carried placards in Bangla with messages such as “no worship anywhere by closing roads” and “no pollution to water by idol immersion.”

A 16-point list of demands was presented, highlighting their concerns about the use of government resources for religious events and the impact of the festival on public order. One contentious point raised was the designation of Durga Puja as a national holiday, despite Hindus representing only about two percent of the population.

Claims of Disruption and Demands for Change

Protesters argue that the festivities create nuisances for the Muslim majority. They also insist that Muslims should not support such celebrations on religious grounds. Among their demands are calls for the removal of temples, which they claim occupy land that should not be held by religious minorities. Additionally, they have suggested that Hindu temples should display anti-India banners, forcing Hindu citizens to publicly demonstrate their loyalty to Bangladesh and their stance against India.

Increasing Violence and Community Anxiety

The Hindu community in Bangladesh has reported a disturbing rise in incidents of temple vandalism and idol destruction, leading to heightened anxiety. In the city of Khulna, some Hindu citizens stated they were being asked to pay 500,000 Bangladeshi taka to hold Durga Puja celebrations.

Despite reassurances from Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the interim government, the Hindu minority has faced increased attacks on their lives and properties, particularly following the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

As the festival of Durga Puja approaches, the Hindu community in Bangladesh finds itself in a precarious situation, navigating rising tensions and threats to their cultural and religious practices. The situation remains volatile, and many are left to wonder how the government will respond to ensure the safety and rights of all its citizens during this festive season.

As Durga Puja approaches, Bengali households are known for their festive meals, with hilsa fish being a quintessential dish. However, this year, the beloved hilsa, or ilish, may become a rare treat for many in India. The recent ban by Bangladesh’s interim government on hilsa exports has caused a stir among fish lovers and traders alike.

Hilsa Export Ban: A Seasonal Disruption

Bangladesh’s decision to halt hilsa exports to India comes as a significant blow to the traditional Durga Puja celebrations. Faisal Akhter, advisor to the Bangladesh Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, confirmed the ban to ensure that local consumers have adequate access to the prized fish. “We cannot allow ilish to be exported while our own people cannot buy them. This year, I have instructed the Ministry of Commerce to prevent any ilish exports to India during Durga Puja,” Akhter said.

This move marks a departure from the previous goodwill practice of sending large consignments of Padma ilish to India, especially during major festivals. Under the previous government led by Sheikh Hasina, such exports were a gesture of friendship and cultural exchange.

Impact on Prices and Supply

The ban has led to a significant rise in hilsa prices in India. Traders are now routing hilsa through alternative routes to bypass the export restrictions. Reports indicate that despite the ban, hilsa from Bangladesh is still making its way into Indian markets, albeit at inflated prices. In Delhi, prices for a 1-1.3 kg hilsa have jumped to Rs 2,200 to Rs 2,400 per kilo, compared to Rs 1,800 to Rs 2,000 a few months ago.

“Traders at Gazipur wholesale market have told us that hilsa from Bangladesh is now being routed via Myanmar,” a fish seller in Delhi’s CR Park Market 1 revealed.

The Padma Hilsa: A Culinary Treasure

Padma ilish, hailing from the Padma River, is renowned for its exceptional taste and texture. It is highly prized for its rich fat and juicy flesh, which set it apart from other varieties. The fish’s unique flavor profile, influenced by the specific conditions of the Padma River, makes it a staple in Bengali celebrations.

Hilsa from Padma has been an integral part of Bengali cuisine and cultural events such as Durga Puja, Poila Boisakh (Bengali New Year), and Jamai Soshti. Despite the challenges posed by the ban, enthusiasts are eager to savor this delicacy.

Hilsa Diplomacy: A Symbol of Friendship

The tradition of hilsa diplomacy has long been a symbol of goodwill between India and Bangladesh. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina used hilsa exports as a gesture of friendship, gifting it to Indian leaders and facilitating its supply during festive seasons. The diplomatic gesture was significant enough to warrant special permissions and celebrations, including a 500-tonne shipment as a Durga Puja gift in 2019.

This year’s abrupt halt to exports represents a dramatic shift from this practice, putting hilsa diplomacy to the test. Even so, the enduring love for ilish ensures that it will continue to make its way into Indian kitchens, even if it requires paying a premium.

“Never thought I would ever have to make a video on women’s safety staying in Kolkata!! Our safety is so vulnerable and endangered in a system like this that women need to take care of their own, be alert in their workplaces, and must carry self-defense tools all the time in their bag!!” Biswas captioned the video.

Mixed Reactions on Social Media

The video has sparked a wide range of reactions from Instagram users. Some viewers expressed their agreement and shared their concerns about the state of women’s safety in Kolkata. One user commented, “Still you can’t defend yourself if five men attack you… It’s the psychology and mindset on which education should be provided to both genders!” Another added, “Didi, this is so sad, but every Bengali woman has this one thing in mind right now. Kolkata is no longer safe for women.”

Others echoed the sentiment, with one person stating, “After the Kolkata incident, even a millisecond of eye contact with a stranger creates tension in my mind.” However, not all reactions were supportive. Some users criticized the influencer, accusing her of exploiting a tragic situation for personal gain. “This is the sad reality,” a user commented, while others labeled her an “opportunist.”

The Broader Context: Kolkata Incident’s Impact

The influencer’s video comes in the wake of the tragic incident on August 9, where a junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College. The case has since been the subject of intense media scrutiny and public debate. The accused, Sanjay Roy, was reportedly identified by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a “pervert” with an addiction to pornography, according to a psychoanalytical profile.

The incident has led to widespread calls for better protection and safety measures for women, both in public spaces and workplaces.

As the debate continues, the tragic event in Kolkata serves as a grim reminder of the dangers women face daily. While some advocate for practical safety measures, others emphasize the need for systemic change to address the root causes of violence against women. The discussion sparked by the influencer’s video underscores the urgency of finding solutions to ensure the safety and security of women in India.

</excerpt>

As protests intensify over the recent rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata, BJP leader Sajal Ghosh, a prominent figure in the Durga Puja celebrations, has called on all Puja committees across West Bengal to reject the state government’s Rs 85,000 honorarium. This move, he argues, would serve as a protest against the government’s “failure to ensure women’s safety.”

Ghosh, the chief organizer of the widely attended Santosh Mitra Square Puja in North Kolkata, has long been known for creating themed pandals that attract large crowds. Speaking to PTI, Ghosh expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the current administration. “Women are being violated, raped, and murdered in public spaces, workplaces, and even their homes under Mamata Banerjee’s regime. The government has failed to protect them. When public outrage grows, she blames everyone but herself,” Ghosh stated.

He specifically referenced the recent case where a young woman doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at her hospital, with only one arrest made so far. “In light of this tragic event, it would be paradoxical for Puja committees to accept the Rs 85,000 grant from a government that has shown such a lack of concern for women’s safety,” Ghosh added.

Despite the tragedy, Ghosh mentioned that his committee has not altered its original plans for the Puja celebrations, which include a dazzling display of lights and a spectacular sphere of illumination. He did, however, leave open the possibility of paying tribute to the victim, saying, “We are considering it, but nothing has been finalized yet. The Puja is a time when people want to escape from their sorrows and stress.”

Ghosh noted that his Puja committee has historically refused financial support from the state, except for the first year when the government offered Rs 10,000 to every community Durga Puja.

In response to Ghosh’s appeal, Debashis Kumar, the chief organizer of the popular Tridhara Sammilani Puja and a TMC MLA, challenged Ghosh to seek a vote among all Durga Puja committees regarding the acceptance of the honorarium. “If Ghosh is so certain about the committees’ opinions, he should initiate a vote. Otherwise, his statements are merely political posturing,” Kumar told PTI.

Kumar further criticized Ghosh for linking the tragic incident with Durga Puja celebrations, accusing him of “insulting the sentiments of thousands of Hindus and Puja organizers across the state.”

Partha Ghosh, president of the Shivmandir Puja Committee and a founding member of the Forum for Durgotsab, also weighed in on the controversy. He suggested that the decision to accept the state honorarium should be left to the discretion of each individual Puja committee.

Muhammad Hasan Mahmud, the information minister for Bangladesh, stated on Saturday that the country’s Hindu minorities are protected and that the government supports them.

He said the peaceful Durga Puja celebrations in Bangladesh is a testimony to their safety. “There are about two crore Hindus in Bangladesh. This year there were over 33,000 Durga Puja pandals. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered our party workers to keep a watch on puja pandals to ensure there is wrongdoing,” the I&B minister said at a press conference in Kolkata.

“Those who had tried to create problems during Durga Puja stand exposed. We have taken special measures to ensure no untoward incident takes place,” he said.

He said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies are supporting these fanatics groups, adding their main politics is anti-India and anti-Hindu. ‘Our government has taken tough action against the miscreants,” he added.

Mahmud stated that the Indo-Bangla relationship is not solely reliant on the two countries’ Teesta water-sharing agreement while he was in the city to launch the Bangladesh Film Festival.

More than the relationship between the two governments, he continued, it is the people-to-people ties between the two nations that have aided in bolstering the diplomatic ties.

Since Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, disagrees with certain of its provisions, the Teesta River water agreement has not yet been finalised.

According to authorities, five people have so far died in a fire that broke out at a Durga Puja pandal in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadoi district. Three of them were minors.

During the Aarti ceremony to celebrate Saptami, or the seventh day of Navratri celebrations, a fire broke out on Sunday in Aurai town near the pandal.

The Bhadohi DM, Gaurang Rathi, said, “The death toll in the Bhadohi Durga Puja pandal fire incident has risen to five. Three children and two women have died.”

Three of the five people who died belonged to the same family, including Jai Devi and her two grandchildren, which has left the family in shock.

Jai Devi’s husband said, “Along with my wife, three of her daughters-in-law and two grandchildren had gone to the pandal. While the woman and one of the children died in hospital, one more child died this morning at home”.

“The death toll has reached three in the Bhadohi Durga Puja pandal matter. A 12-year-old boy, a 10-year-old boy, and a 45-year-old woman died in the incident,” the DM said.

The incident was reported on Sunday night by Bhadohi SP Anil Kumar, who stated that the fire started during aarti.

“At around 9 pm, a fire broke out at the Durga Puja pandal in Bhadohi as it was the time of aarti. Around 10–15 people were injured and were immediately rushed to the hospital,” the SP said.

According to Bhadohi DM Gaurang Rathi, a short circuit was the likely cause of the tragedy.

“Around 150 people were present during the Durga Puja aarti when the fire broke out. 52 people were admitted to different hospitals. People with 30–40% burns have been admitted to trauma centers, and all patients are stable. Prima facie, the incident happened due to a short circuit, further probe is on,” the DM said late Sunday night.

Using a pandal in Kolkata with a corruption theme, the Bengal BJP has targeted the administration. The Durga Puja pandal prominently displays cut-outs and pictures of Partha Chatterjee and the Bengal education scam.

Sukanta Majumda, the leader of the BJP Bengal division, officially unveiled the Durga Puja celebrations at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre.

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, was invited to inaugurate the event. However, he was unable to attend because of prior obligations in Gujarat. The Gujarat Home Minister is there for the Navratri celebrations.

The BJP has developed a theme for this year that highlights alleged corrupt practises of Trinamool Congress politicians in Bengal. Partha Chatterjee, a former minister from Bengal who is suspected of corruption, and the Bengal education scam are depicted in cut-outs and other graphics as part of the BJP’s theme that directly criticises the ruling party for corruption.

“Puja is being done in a very traditional way. However, people who visit the pandals will get to see whatever is happening in the state,” actor Rudranil Ghosh, head of the BJP’s Sankritik Manch, told India Today.

Kailash Vijayvargiya and former BJP leader Mukul Roy are thought to have created the cultural organisation. According to sources, some officials disagreed with the notion of holding the puja under a party banner. Mukul Roy, Babul Supriyo, and Arjun Singh were just a few of the leaders who quit to join the TMC in 2021 after being photographed leading the puja. The party’s cultural brigade also included a number of actors and movie stars who later disbanded.

The Union Ministry of Culture urged everyone on Thursday to celebrate Durga Puja’s inclusion as the first Indian festival on UNESCO’s Representation List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Meenakshi Lekhi, Union Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs praised the Centre’s efforts to promote India’s culture and heritage.

“Nominating the Durga Puja in Intangible Cultural Heritage list is the country’s pride. We have taken all the advice into consideration. As per the direction, we nominated Durga Puja as the Intangible culture of the country because cutting across states is celebrated by everyone. In this process, it brings everyone together, it’s Unity in Diversity,” Lekhi said.

According to the union minister, India has submitted ‘Garba’ for consideration on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

She went on to explain how the “whole-of-government approach” resulted in Durga Puja being successfully inscribed on the UNESCO list.

According to Lekhi, the union culture ministry was involved in preparing the dossiers for inscription, while the union external affairs ministry gathered international support for voting.

She added that everyone should rise above petty politics.

However, Lekhi attacked West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee for taking credit for the inclusion of the festival on UNESCO’s list.

“It is horrendous a state government that banned Durga Puja and idol immersion was taking credit for this feat,” she said.

Lekhi also praised the artisans who worked on the creation of Durga idols and pandals.

She will honour 30 such artisans on September 24 at a ministry-organized event in Kolkata.

Cachar police in Assam have announced an anti-Romeo squad for the upcoming Durga Puja to control eve-teasing and ensure women’s safety.

Numal Mahatta, the district’s superintendent of police, recently announced that the squad will consist of eight police officers, four of whom will be female.

According to Mahatta, the squad is made up of specially trained police officers who will keep a close eye on the town during the festival season.

“Durga Puja is the biggest festival here and it’ll be celebrated for five to six days. Women’s safety is our priority and this squad will be taking additional care,” Mahatta said.

Mahatta also stated that they have planned for traffic control as well as law and order during the Durga Puja. There will be police and other security forces stationed at strategic locations, but this anti-Romeo squad will be unique.

To plan the Durga Puja festival, the Cachar district administration met with various departments and non-governmental organisations. Additional police and security personnel have been called in for the duration.

Deputy Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha has directed the Durga Puja committees to refrain from using plastic during the celebration.

He said, “We have already asked the puja committees to avoid single-use plastic. Our teams have started working on this and they’ll keep vigil during the entire festival.”

During Durga Puja, over five lakh people visit Silchar, the heart of Assam’s Barak Valley.
