</excerpt>

President Droupadi Murmu is set to visit the revered Sabarimala temple in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district on May 19, making her the first sitting President of India to offer prayers at the iconic hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa.

Travancore Devaswom Board Confirms Milestone Visit

The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), which oversees the temple’s operations, officially confirmed Murmu’s visit and described it as a “milestone moment for both the nation and the temple.” The President’s tour to Kerala is part of a two-day official visit, beginning May 18.

Two-Day Kerala Tour Includes Temple Visit and Private Event

Murmu will arrive in Kottayam on May 18 to attend a private event. The next day, she will head to the Nilakkal helipad before proceeding to the Pampa base camp, which serves as the starting point for the temple journey.

Her ascent to the hilltop temple, located at an elevation of 3,000 feet, may involve the traditional 4.25-kilometre trek or a drive along a steep emergency road. The final decision will be made by the Special Protection Group (SPG) responsible for her security.

Security to Determine Mode of Ascent

“This marks the first time a sitting President has chosen to visit the Sabarimala shrine. The SPG will decide whether she walks or is driven. We will comply with their instructions,” said PS Prasanth, President of the Travancore Devaswom Board.

Prasanth also shared that while the official itinerary has yet to be finalized, preparations have been ongoing for weeks. “The possibility of her visit has been circulating for the past two to three weeks. Now that it’s confirmed, we’ve expedited road repairs and related construction work. Once formal communication is received, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will convene a review meeting. This is undoubtedly a historic occasion,” he added.

Temple Access Restricted for Devotees During Visit

Murmu’s visit will coincide with the end of monthly poojas for the Malayalam month of Edavam, during which the temple attracts a large number of pilgrims. To ensure security, authorities have restricted public access to the shrine on May 18 and 19. The virtual queue system has also been suspended.

Traditional Pilgrimage Practices May Be Followed

The Sabarimala pilgrimage traditionally involves 41 days of penance, followed by a barefoot trek from the banks of the Pampa River, with devotees carrying an “Irumudi”—a sacred offering bundle required for climbing the 18 holy steps to the sanctum.

Prasanth indicated that President Murmu may prepare her Irumudi at the Pampa base camp, but further details are awaited from the President’s office. “She will be the first President to ever offer prayers here. It is truly a proud moment,” he remarked.

A Rare Presidential Pilgrimage to Sabarimala

The last high-profile political visit to Sabarimala was by VV Giri, who made the pilgrimage during his term as Kerala’s Governor in the early 1960s, before becoming President in 1969. Droupadi Murmu’s upcoming visit stands out as a symbolically significant moment in the temple’s long-standing tradition.

</excerpt>

Indian President Droupadi Murmu will travel to Vatican City to attend the state funeral of His Holiness Pope Francis. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Thursday that India will officially participate in the international ceremony. Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, died on April 21 at the age of 88.

MEA Confirms Visit of Indian President Droupadi Murmu

In its release, the MEA stated, “The Hon’ble President of India will visit Vatican City to represent the nation at the State Funeral of HH Pope Francis.” By dispatching President Murmu, India has once again demonstrated its regard for the Pope’s international stature and his leadership of the Catholic Church. The President’s attendance reflects India’s dedication to paying tribute to world leaders of peace, compassion, and humanitarianism.

Leaders from across the continents have reacted with deep sadness to the news of Pope Francis’ death. His funeral will be attended by dozens of heads of state, royals, and dignitaries and will represent one of the largest diplomatic gatherings the Vatican has witnessed in decades.

Global Leaders Join President Draupadi Murmu for Historic Farewell

World leaders like US President Donald Trump, UK’s Prince William, French President Emmanuel Macron, Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia have already confirmed that they will attend. These confirmations indicate the great regard Pope Francis gained during his papacy and the world following for his humanitarian agenda.

President Murmu will not only pay homage on India’s behalf but also interact with other global leaders during the visit. Her presence will further consolidate India’s relations with the Holy See and reaffirm its position in global diplomatic and religious discourse. India’s lively Catholic community, which is a significant component of the country’s religious landscape, also stands acknowledged through this gesture.

Pope Francis’ Legacy of Compassion and Reform

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis was the first Jesuit and the first Latin American to ever head the Catholic Church. During his leadership, he emphasized humility, care of the environment, and openness. Pope Francis consistently spoke on behalf of the oppressed and advocated interfaith tolerance and social justice.

The state funeral at St. Peter’s Basilica will be steeped in high ceremonial protocol and emotional tributes. As global leaders and devout people assemble to bid adieu, President Murmu will stand in as the voice of over a billion Indians to pay their respects to one of the greatest kind-hearted spiritual leaders of this century.

This is the first visit by an Indian President to either nation in more than two decades.

Invited by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this visit holds historical significance, coming 27 years after the last state visit by President K.R. Narayanan in 1998. It also coincides with the 50th anniversary of India-Portugal diplomatic relations.

Sharing updates on X, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said,

“These are the first State visits to either country by the President of India in more than 25 years… The visits will further expand India’s multifaceted engagement with two important EU partners.”

Key Highlights of the Portugal Visit:

Delegation-level talks between President Murmu and President de Sousa

Banquet dinner hosted in her honour

Meetings with Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, Parliament Speaker Jose Pedro Aguiar Branco, and Lisbon’s Mayor

Interaction with the Indian community and Indian researchers in Portugal

Tanmay Lal, MEA Secretary (West), called this a “symbolic and landmark visit”, reaffirming strong India-Portugal ties that have seen regular high-level exchanges in recent years.

Slovakia Up Next

On April 9-10, President Murmu will head to Slovakia, at the invitation of President Peter Pellegrini. This marks the first Indian presidential visit to Slovakia in 29 years, commemorating 30 years since the Indian embassy opened in Bratislava in 1995.

These visits aim to strengthen India’s strategic and cultural partnerships with European Union countries and foster deeper cooperation in various fields, including education, research, and people-to-people ties.

</excerpt>

In her Independence Day address, President Droupadi Murmu emphasized that social justice is the government’s top priority and that the spirit of inclusion should permeate every aspect of social life in India. She asserted that “affirmative action must be strengthened as an instrument of inclusion.”

Addressing the nation on the eve of the 78th Independence Day, President Murmu highlighted that tendencies which foster discord based on perceived social hierarchies must be rejected.

She noted that India has been among the fastest-growing major economies, with an average annual growth rate of 8 percent from 2021 to 2024. This growth has not only increased the wealth of the population but also significantly reduced the number of people living below the poverty line. For those still suffering from poverty, efforts are being made to provide support and lift them out of it.

President Murmu pointed out that the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, introduced during the early phase of COVID-19, continues to supply free rations to about 80 crore people. This initiative helps prevent those who have recently escaped poverty from falling back into it.

She also highlighted that India has become the world’s fifth-largest economy and is on track to become one of the top three economies soon. This achievement is attributed to the hard work of farmers and workers, the foresight of planners and wealth creators, and visionary leadership. Farmers, in particular, have exceeded expectations in agricultural production, contributing significantly to India’s self-reliance in this sector.

The President acknowledged the recent improvements in infrastructure, including the expansion of roads, highways, railways, and ports, facilitated by strategic planning and effective institutions. She also noted the government’s promotion of futuristic technologies, such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence, and the creation of a supportive ecosystem for startups, making India a more attractive investment destination.

With increased transparency, the banking and financial sectors have become more efficient, setting the stage for the next generation of economic reforms and growth that could propel India among developed nations.

President Murmu emphasized that India’s rapid yet equitable progress has elevated its global stature. Following the successful completion of its G-20 Presidency, India has solidified its role as the voice of the Global South and aims to use its influential position to promote world peace and prosperity.

Reflecting on BR Ambedkar’s call to make the country’s political democracy a social democracy as well, she noted that the steady progress of political democracy signifies advancement toward social democracy.

“The spirit of inclusion pervades every aspect of our social life. We move forward as a cohesive nation embracing our diversity and plurality. Affirmative action must be strengthened as an instrument of inclusion. In a vast country like ours, tendencies that foster discord based on perceived social hierarchies must be rejected,” President Murmu stated.

She underscored that social justice is a top government priority and has led to unprecedented initiatives for the welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other marginalized communities. There are provisions for reservation in government jobs and higher education institutions for these groups.

The President also mentioned the Pradhan Mantri Samajik Utthan evam Rozgar Adharit Jankalyan (PM-SURAJ) scheme, which provides direct financial assistance to marginalized communities, and the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan, a mass campaign aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups.

Finally, she highlighted the National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) scheme, which ensures that sanitation workers are not required to manually clean sewers and septic tanks, thus eliminating hazardous tasks.

</excerpt>

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Saturday took a swipe at the Sangh saying that it aggressively opposed Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India movement in 1942 and called the Constitution adopted on November 26, 1949 as ‘Unindian’ because it was inspired by ‘Manu’ and praised Lalu Prasad Yadav’s article for debunking non biological Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He took a jibe while reacting to a news article written by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Ramesh, who is also party’s communication incharge said, “The very same Sangh that aggressively opposed Gandhiji’s Quit India Movement in 1942 and called the Constitution adopted on Nov 26 1949 as ‘UnIndian’ because it was not inspired by Manu.”

“This is a superb piece that debunks and fully exposes the non-biological PM,” Ramesh said while taking a pot shot at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Ramesh was responding to the news article written by Lalu Prasad.

In his article, which Lalu Prasad shared on X, formerly Twitter, and said that “I was the convener of the steering committee that Jayaprakash Narayan—had constituted to carry forward the movement against the excesses of Emergency imposed by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi”.

The RJD supremo said: “I was in jail under the Maintenance of Security Act (MISA) for over 15 months. My colleagues and I did not know many of the BJP ministers speaking about the Emergency today. We hadn’t heard of Modi, J P Nadda and some of the PM’s other ministerial colleagues who today lecture us on the value of freedom.”

“Indira Gandhi put many of us behind bars, but she never abused us. Neither she nor her ministers called us ‘anti-national’ or ‘unpatriotic’. She never enabled vandals to defile the memory of Babasaheb Ambedkar—the architect of our Constitution. 1975 is a stain on our democracy but let’s not forget who doesn’t respect the Opposition in 2024,” the RJD supremo said.

The BJP has been critical of the Congress over the issue of emergency in 1975. First Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then Lom Sabha Speaker Om Birla in his acceptance speech in the lower house mentioned about Emergency in 1975.

Even President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday addressed the joint session of both houses of Parliament after the constitution of the 18th Lok Sabha

President Murmu invoked Emergency calling it “an attack on the Constitution and a source of chaos and panic in the country”.

“The Constitution of India withstood all hurdles that came it’s way when it was being formulated and implemented. It also overcame attacks that it faced after independence, in the form of National Emergency imposed in the country 50 years ago,” she said.

</excerpt>

President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday made her first address to a joint sitting of Parliament after Lok Sabha polls. There she spoke about the recent controversy regarding the NEET exam and said that the NDA government was committed to holding a fair investigation into the recent incidents of paper leaks and allegations of irregularities in competitive exams.

She also praised the people of Jammu and Kashmir for their voter turnout during the Lok Sabha Elections and said they gave a befitting response to India’s enemies.

Here are the top quotes

It is a continuous effort of the government to ensure that the youth of the country gets adequate opportunity to display their talent. My government is committed to a fair investigation of the recent incidents of paper leaks as well as stringent punishment for the guilty.

Decades-long records of voting were broken in Jammu and Kashmir, which earlier saw low voting amid shutdowns and strikes. The people gave a befitting reply to India’s enemies who propagated as Kashmir’s opinion in international forums.

Emergency was the biggest and darkest chapter of the direct attack on the Constitution. The entire country plunged into chaos during the Emergency, but the nation was victorious against such unconstitutional powers.

Opposition of policies and obstruction of parliamentary functioning are two different things. When Parliament conducts its business smoothly, healthy deliberations take place here, and far-reaching decisions are taken.

With the reforms that have taken place in the last 10 years and the new confidence that has been infused in the country, we have gained new momentum to make India a developed nation.

My government is going to take one more decision that all the elderly above 70 years of age will get the benefit of free treatment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

For a capable India, modernity in our armed forces is essential and we should be the best in the face of war. To ensure this, the process of reforms should go on continuously in the armed forces.

My government is developing affordable and Indigenous assistive devices for divyang brothers and sisters and integrating social security schemes for workers. It is because of the government schemes that 25 crore Indians have come out of poverty in the last 10 years.

Government has started granting citizenship to refugees under CAA law and I wish for a better future for such people.

Government is working for lasting peace in Northeast and several old problems addressed in last 10 years. It is also working for gradual removal of AFSPA.

</excerpt>

A bus carrying employees of a private company had met with a terrible incident in Chhattisgarh’s Durg region that left at least 12 people dead and left many injured. Under the jurisdiction of the Kumhari police station, the incident happened on Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. close to Khapri village.

The bus, carrying over 30 passengers, skidded off the road and plunged into the 40 feet-deep mine pit. Among the casualties were three women. Initial reports suggested 15 fatalities, although later confirmation revised the count to 12 deaths. Rescue operations swiftly commenced, with a joint effort from the police, State Disaster Response Force, and locals.

According to Jitendra Shukla, Durg Superintendent of Police, the victims—all workers at the Kediya Distillery Company—fell into a “murum” soil mine pit while the bus was returning home from work. Murum, the type of soil in the mine, is commonly utilized in construction activities.

Durg Collector Richa Prakash Choudhary announced a magisterial probe into the incident and informed the press that the injured have been transferred to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Raipur, while two are receiving treatment at a local hospital. She also disclosed that the company, along with administrative aid, has pledged compensation for the victims.

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma visited AIIMS to meet the injured, while Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed condolences and assured adequate arrangements for the treatment of the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his sorrow over the tragedy, pledging support from the state government for the victims and their families.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over the accident and tweeted: “News has been received about a bus full of employees of a private company meeting an accident near Kumhari in Durg resulting to the death of 11 employees. Adequate arrangements have been made for the treatment of the employees injured in the accident. I wish them a speedy recovery.”

Along with expressing sorrow over the deaths in the horrific disaster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised that the state government will do everything in its power to assist the victims.

It’s very tragic about the bus tragedy that happened in Durg, Chhattisgarh. Those who lost loved ones in this have my sincere sympathy. Concurrently, I hope the injured individuals heal quickly. The local government is assisting the victims in every manner possible while operating under the direction of the state government, PM Modi said on X.

The executive committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) distanced itself from the letter written by SCBA chief Adish C Aggarwala, urging a presidential reference for the electoral bonds scheme case verdict. The committee condemned the letter, describing it as an “attempt to overreach and undermine the authority” of the Supreme Court.

Aggarwala, also the chairperson of the All India Bar Association, wrote to President Droupadi Murmu, requesting a presidential reference for the electoral bonds scheme case verdict and advising not to enforce it until the top court rehears the matter.

In his letter, Aggarwala argued against revealing the names of contributing corporates, stating that it could make them vulnerable to victimization. He expressed concern about corporates being singled out and harassed by parties that received fewer contributions from them. He emphasized that disclosing such sensitive information retrospectively would have a chilling effect on corporate donations and participation in the democratic process.

While the letter bore the letterhead of the All India Bar Association, Aggarwala’s designation as President of the SCBA was noted below his signature. The SCBA’s executive committee clarified that it had not authorized the President to write such a letter, and its members did not endorse his views. The committee viewed the act and its contents as an attempt to undermine the authority of the Supreme Court and unequivocally condemned it.

“…I will definitely say this… those MPs who have formed a habit of creating a ruckus, who habitually tear apart democratic values, when they are meeting today in the last session, they will definitely introspect,” PM Modi said, adding, that no one remembers those who created a ruckus. He further requested the members to ensure that there is decorum in the house to perform their best and provide the best ideas for the house.

He also claimed the beginning of the budget session as a “festival of women power” before saying that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the interim budget 2024-25 with encouraging words and expressed hope that his government would present the full budget after returning to power.

PM Modi also said that at the beginning of the budget session President Droupadi Murmu will address the joint sitting of both Houses and on Thursday, Sitharaman will present the interim budget. “In a way, this is a festival of women power,” Modi said.

“When election time is near, the full budget is generally not kept. Following the same tradition, we will also present the full budget before you after the formation of the government. This time, the country’s finance minister Nirmala ji is going to present her budget in front of all of us tomorrow with some guiding words.”

Modi concluded his remarks with the greeting of “Ram-Ram”.

</excerpt>

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu has granted assent to the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023. Introduced in the Rajya Sabha on August 10 by Minister of State for Law & Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, the bill addresses the legal vacuum highlighted by a Supreme Court judgment concerning the appointment of Election Commissioners.

The bill outlines that the selection committee responsible for appointing the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs) will be chaired by the Prime Minister and will include a Union Cabinet Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The bill received approval from the Rajya Sabha on December 12 before being passed by the Lok Sabha on December 21. Former Supreme Court judge Justice Rohinton Nariman expressed concerns, stating that the bill could compromise the independence of the Election Commission of India (ECI). He emphasized that if the bill becomes law, the executive would have the final say in appointing the CEC and ECs, potentially impacting the fairness of elections.

The Supreme Court judgment from March 2, 2023, urged the Central government to establish a law on appointments to the ECI. Until then, appointments should be made based on the advice of a committee comprising the PM, the Chief Justice of India (CJI), and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

A leader belonging to the Jat community, Chaudhary Surendar Solanki told ANI, “We have called a meeting for our leaders. Jaya Sukin sought to have his PIL withdrawn because a vacation bench comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and PS Narasimha was unwilling to hear his argument. The advocate’s request to withdraw his plea was granted by the bench.

At the outset of the hearing, Justice Narasimha said to petitioner lawyer Jaya Sukin, “We do not understand why you come with such petitions but we are not interested in entertaining it under Article 32.”The PIL said Lok Sabha Secretariat violated the Constitution by not inviting the President for the inauguration.
“The statement issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat on May 18 and invites issued by the Secretary-General, Lok Sabha, about the inauguration of the new Parliament building, is in violation of the Indian Constitution,” the PIL filed by Sukin said.

“That Prime Minister is appointed by the President and other ministers are appointed by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat, Union Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Law and Justice were made parties in the case.The plea stated that the respondent’s (Secretary and Union) decision was “illegal, arbitrary, high-handed, whimsical and unfair, an abuse of authority and against the principles of natural justice”.
