</excerpt>

Drones were spotted over Punjab’s Jalandhar and the Samba district in the Jammu and Kashmir region on Monday, raising alarm just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national address. This was at a time when there was increased tension, following the induction of Operation Sindoor, which targets Pakistan-based terrorists.

Explosions Heard in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur

Simultaneously, locals in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district reported hearing 7-8 explosions in the Dasuya area, contributing to the already volatile situation. Authorities quickly enforced a blackout across the affected areas, including the strategic Pathankot region and the Vaishno Devi Bhawan yatra track, in an attempt to prevent further escalation.

PM Modi’s Address: A Strong Warning to Pakistan

In his first speech after the initiation of Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Modi categorically asserted that India would not accept any kind of “nuclear blackmail” from Pakistan. The Prime Minister made it clear that India’s military action against Pakistan has only been suspended and will be resumed based on Pakistan’s future behavior. Modi’s statement highlighted that Pakistan requested India to suspend operations, but India agreed only after Pakistan committed to halting provocations.

Condemnation of Terrorism and the Pahalgam Attack

Calling the recent Pahalgam attack a “barbaric face of terrorism,” Modi condemned the attack while speaking of personal anguish. He also threatened that the repercussions for those who attack India, especially targeting Indian women, would be severe.

As a part of continued diplomatic moves, India and Pakistan’s Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) completed their talks on Monday. Even though the scheduled hotline call was postponed, indications are that during the meeting, there was an emphasis on the ceasefire pact signed on May 10 to stop military action and cross-border firing. Details about the talks are not being made public.

Operation Sindoor: India’s Military Victory

The Indian Defence Forces, in their regular briefing, assured the public that India’s military bases are safe, fully functional, and ready for any attack. The briefing also reported the success of Operation Sindoor, which saw 11 Pakistani air bases destroyed and heavy damage to Pakistan’s military installations. Indian forces also exchanged artillery fire with Pakistani forces from May 7 to 10, killing 35-40 Pakistani soldiers, according to reports.

Following a series of ceasefire violations by Pakistan, barely a week after a decision to suspend hostilities, this tense standoff has ensued. In response to the violations, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri summoned Pakistan to take the situation with “seriousness” and “responsibility.” The situation remains dynamic as military and diplomatic negotiations continue.

</excerpt>

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stirred fresh controversy on Friday. He claimed that the Pakistani Army intentionally avoided intercepting Indian drones to prevent exposing their defence positions. His remark came after India carried out successful strikes on terror camps across the border.

While speaking in Pakistan’s Parliament, Asif said, “I can’t go into the details. But we didn’t intercept Indian drones during yesterday’s attack as we didn’t want to give away our defence positions.”

India Responds Strongly to Drone Attacks

India had launched precision strikes on May 8, targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). These airstrikes were in retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. The Indian response neutralised a 35-minute-long attack initiated by Pakistan.

Earlier Threats from Asif

Earlier that day, Asif made a strong statement warning India. He said Pakistan would not rely only on diplomacy. Instead, he threatened military retaliation. “If India does not talk at the diplomatic and political table and [through diplomatic] channels, we will talk and respond with guns. Pakistan does not have time to wait and show patience. We have to stop India here,” he said.

Asif Faces Criticism for Past Remarks

This is not the first time Asif has faced backlash for his statements. Recently, international media criticised him for citing “social media content” to claim that Pakistan had shot down Indian fighter jets during Operation Sindoor. His claim was widely mocked and dismissed.

India’s Precision Strikes

India carried out the retaliatory operation early on Wednesday. Using airstrikes, Indian forces destroyed nine terror launchpads in Pakistan and PoK. The move was seen as a direct response to cross-border terrorism linked to the Pahalgam attack.

</excerpt>

Tensions at the India-Pakistan border rose on Friday night following a series of massive explosions that resonated through Jammu, purportedly after Indian air defence systems intercepted Pakistani drones during a region-wide blackout. The episode has added to public fear in the wake of this week’s fatal Pahalgam attack and the Indian Armed Forces’ immediate retaliatory response in Operation Sindoor.

Drone Incursion in Jammu During Blackout Increases Civilian Panic

According to videos posted by ANI, blasts were reported in Jammu when Indian troops encountered and disposed of aerial targets in the form of suspected Pakistani drones. According to the ANI tweet, the videos were “deferred by an unspecified time,” which might have been for operational security.

— ANI (@ANI) May 9, 2025

The drone intrusion is the latest in a series of mounting military provocations. The nation was rocked earlier this week by a terror strike in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, where militants armed to the teeth fired on a group of Indian pilgrims, leaving several civilian and security personnel casualties. The strike is being attributed to Pakistan-sponsored groups, as per initial intelligence inputs.

Operation Sindoor: India’s Swift Military Response

India retaliated with Operation Sindoor, a multi-branch military operation, targeting terrorist training camps and suspected launchpads along the Line of Control. The operation, which commenced late Wednesday night, has resulted in the targeting and destruction of key targets in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Defence sources indicate that the aim was to destroy major terror infrastructure and send out a strong deterrent message.

Friday’s drone attack further establishes the employment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by Pakistani forces in reconnaissance and potentially arms delivery operations. Indian security forces, already in high alert, used advanced radar-based defence systems to counter the aerial threats over Jammu.

The blasts raised an alarm among border villages already suffering from fear due to prolonged ceasefire breaches. Locals complained of power cuts moments before the explosions, fuelling suspicion of possible tactical blackout or power line damage.

Restrictions on civilian movement were imposed late at night in sensitive areas, and emergency procedures were initiated across Jammu district. There have been no reports of injury or damage to infrastructure so far, although a full assessment is pending.

Although the Indian government has made no official comment, defence authorities confirmed that high-level surveillance was continuing and troops were prepared to respond to future threats. The country remains unified as military actions continue to fight aggression and safeguard the sovereignty of Indian soil.

</excerpt>

Russia celebrated Victory Day on May 9, 2025, to celebrate 80 years of its World War II victory with a large military parade in Moscow’s Red Square. Russia featured combat drones that are actually being employed in the war in Ukraine for the first time.

President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping were present at the event, along with more than two dozen foreign leaders. The drones such as the Lancet, Geran-2, Orlan-10, and Orlan-30 dominated the headlines, marking Russia’s changing approach to war and reflecting its increasing emphasis on contemporary warfare.

Drones Steal the Limelight

The drone showcase was a dramatic change in Russia’s military spectacle. The Lancet drone, a loitering munition, serves two purposes. It attacks targets and gathers intelligence. It is reported to have destroyed Ukrainian tanks and even a military aircraft.

Next came the Geran-2. It’s a Russian-made kamikaze drone, based on an older Iranian model. Russia uses it to strike Ukraine’s energy sites. Kyiv accuses Moscow of hitting residential buildings too.

Then, the Orlan-10 and Orlan-30 drones followed. These are primarily used for spotting enemy positions and selecting targets. They’ve become key tools in Russia’s real-time battlefield strategy.

Sending a Strategic Signal

Russia took the parade as an opportunity to show its military might and technological development. By parading the drones, it underscored how much the Ukraine conflict now depends on high-tech equipment. This was not only for domestic viewers. The event was intended to demonstrate to the world that Russia is still a force to be reckoned with.

Xi Jinping’s presence was no accident. It indicated increasing Russia-China relations. As opposed to increasing isolation from the West, Russia sought to demonstrate that it still has international allies.

Global Divide on Full Display

While Moscow was partying with tanks and drones, Western nations did it differently. They marked Victory Day in a subdued manner. In Lviv, Ukraine, some European leaders met to demonstrate solidarity with Kyiv. They also talked of fresh sanctions on Moscow.

These simultaneous events indicated the stark cleavages of the current global order. One side, a display of military might. The other, voices of restraint and peace.

The 2025 Victory Day Parade was not just a historical commemoration. It was an unmistakable message. Russia employed it to commemorate its past and demonstrate future strength. With drones in the limelight and allies at its side, Moscow sent a message: it intends to dictate the battlefield and world politics on its own terms.

</excerpt>

In recent years, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, has emerged as one of the most significant threats to global poultry industries, public health, and wildlife populations. With its rapid spread and ability to jump between animal and human populations, HPAI presents an ever-growing challenge for governments, agricultural industries, and health organizations worldwide. As the virus evolves and adapts, traditional methods of surveillance and detection are proving inadequate in staying ahead of outbreaks. In response, new and innovative methods are being developed to revolutionize surveillance in the fight against HPAI, from the use of ducks to cutting-edge detection technologies.

This article delves into how surveillance has evolved in the fight against HPAI and how integrating advanced technologies, as well as animal-based monitoring, is changing the landscape of disease detection. We explore the key players in this revolution, the scientific principles behind their success, and the challenges that still lie ahead in the battle to prevent and control HPAI outbreaks.

The Global Challenge of HPAI

HPAI is caused by a strain of the influenza virus that primarily affects birds, particularly wild birds such as ducks, geese, and shorebirds. While it can affect all avian species, domestic poultry such as chickens, turkeys, and ducks are most vulnerable to the virus. Over the years, HPAI has evolved to become more deadly and transmissible, with devastating effects on both poultry industries and wildlife populations. The rapid spread of HPAI strains, such as the H5N1, H7N9, and H5N8 variants, has prompted alarm worldwide, leading to significant economic losses, the culling of millions of birds, and heightened concerns about human health risks.

Bird flu can sometimes be transmitted to humans, though it is typically rare. However, when it does occur, the virus can be highly contagious and cause severe illness or death in humans. This zoonotic potential adds a layer of urgency to monitoring and detecting HPAI outbreaks before they escalate into global public health crises. As a result, governments and international organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), have been working tirelessly to improve surveillance systems and contain the spread of the virus.

Traditional surveillance strategies have primarily involved monitoring poultry farms for signs of illness, as well as conducting active surveillance in wild bird populations. While these methods have yielded some success, they often have limitations. Poultry farms are more easily monitored, but wild birds, which are a key vector for spreading the disease, are more difficult to track. Additionally, detecting the virus in its early stages is critical to preventing large-scale outbreaks, but detecting HPAI in animals before symptoms appear or before the virus has spread widely can be a challenge.

Innovative Surveillance Solutions: The Role of Ducks in Detection

One of the most promising innovations in HPAI surveillance is the use of ducks in detecting the virus. Wild ducks, particularly migratory species, are known to be natural carriers of avian influenza viruses. These birds can harbor the virus without showing symptoms, acting as silent vectors that can spread HPAI to other birds, farms, and potentially even humans. Tracking the movements and health of wild ducks provides a unique opportunity for early detection and surveillance.

1. Tracking Migratory Patterns Migratory birds are known to carry and spread HPAI as they travel across vast distances. By using GPS and satellite technology to track the movements of these birds, scientists can better understand the migration patterns of potentially infected populations. Understanding the migratory pathways helps researchers anticipate the geographical spread of HPAI and prepare early-warning systems in affected areas.

In the past, researchers relied on manual methods to monitor migratory birds, which were labor-intensive and often inaccurate. Today, technologies such as GPS transmitters and satellite tags allow researchers to track the birds in real-time, providing accurate data on their movements and identifying potential hotspots for HPAI outbreaks.

2. Understanding Wild Bird Behavior Ducks and other waterfowl are often asymptomatic carriers of HPAI, which makes them particularly dangerous in spreading the virus undetected. Researchers have developed methods to monitor wild bird populations for signs of viral shedding, particularly in areas known for large concentrations of migratory waterfowl. By analyzing duck feces, blood samples, and nasal swabs, scientists can identify the presence of the virus before it spreads to other birds or humans.

3. Surveillance in Wetlands and Migratory Routes Wetlands and coastal areas, where migratory waterfowl congregate, serve as hotspots for surveillance. These ecosystems are closely monitored by environmental agencies, public health organizations, and researchers who work together to collect data on potential outbreaks. By testing wild bird populations for HPAI, scientists can get a clearer picture of how the virus is circulating in the wild and whether it poses a threat to poultry farms or human populations.

One such initiative has been seen in Europe, where ongoing surveillance programs track migratory waterfowl at key locations. Researchers working with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) are studying wild bird populations and regularly sampling bird populations to track the presence of avian influenza. Their findings inform governments and health authorities on how to address potential risks.

The Rise of Cutting-Edge Detection Technologies

While animal-based surveillance remains crucial for early detection, technological innovations are playing a pivotal role in revolutionizing the detection of HPAI. From real-time monitoring systems to artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms, new technologies are enabling faster, more accurate detection of HPAI in both wildlife and poultry populations.

1. AI and Machine Learning in Surveillance Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are increasingly being used to analyze vast amounts of surveillance data collected from various sources. AI algorithms can process large volumes of environmental, behavioral, and biological data to predict outbreaks of HPAI and provide early warnings for authorities. These technologies are designed to detect patterns that human analysts may miss, providing a more comprehensive understanding of how the virus spreads.

In particular, machine learning models are being used to predict areas where outbreaks are likely to occur. By analyzing data on environmental conditions, migratory patterns, and previous outbreak locations, machine learning algorithms can help health and agricultural authorities prepare for the virus’s spread, potentially preventing large-scale outbreaks before they happen.

2. Diagnostic Tools for Faster Detection New diagnostic tools are also revolutionizing the detection process. Rapid diagnostic kits are now available that can detect the presence of HPAI in birds within hours, reducing the time it takes for authorities to respond to potential outbreaks. These tests use molecular techniques, such as PCR (polymerase chain reaction), to amplify viral RNA, allowing for the rapid detection of HPAI even in its early stages.

Mobile diagnostic units are also being developed to allow for on-site testing of birds in rural or remote areas. These mobile units are equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory tools, enabling researchers to test poultry and wildlife on-site and provide immediate results. This technology is essential in quickly identifying infected animals, isolating them, and preventing further spread.

3. Drones and Remote Sensing Technology Another cutting-edge development in surveillance is the use of drones and remote sensing technology. Drones equipped with infrared cameras and other sensors can monitor large areas quickly and efficiently, identifying signs of illness in bird populations without needing to physically disturb the animals. Drones can also be used to capture aerial images of wetlands and poultry farms, allowing for non-invasive monitoring of bird health.

Remote sensing technologies, such as environmental sensors and satellite imagery, also play a critical role in surveillance. These technologies can detect changes in water levels, temperature, and habitat conditions that may indicate the presence of HPAI, providing researchers with valuable data to help predict outbreaks.

Challenges and the Future of HPAI Surveillance

While these innovations represent significant advancements in the fight against HPAI, several challenges remain. One of the primary hurdles is the global coordination required to implement these surveillance systems. With migratory birds traveling across continents and virus strains constantly evolving, international cooperation is essential to effectively monitor and control the spread of HPAI.

Another challenge is the need for robust infrastructure and funding to support these technologies. In many regions, particularly in developing countries, limited resources and lack of access to advanced technologies make it difficult to conduct comprehensive surveillance. Ensuring that surveillance programs are adequately funded and accessible to all regions is key to preventing the global spread of HPAI.

A New Era of Surveillance and Disease Prevention

The integration of animal-based monitoring, cutting-edge detection technologies, and AI-driven analysis is revolutionizing the way we approach the surveillance of HPAI. From tracking migratory ducks to utilizing drones and machine learning, these innovations are providing critical tools in the battle to prevent HPAI outbreaks. While challenges remain, these advancements offer hope for more effective and efficient disease prevention, ultimately protecting both human and animal health. The future of HPAI surveillance lies in the combination of old and new, ensuring that we are prepared to face emerging threats in an ever-changing world.

This new development overcomes the longstanding challenge of generating powerful laser beams for practical use. While traditionally, metal-cutting lasers have required large, cumbersome equipment, Li’s team has miniaturized the system to fit on drones, allowing for greater mobility and precision. These drones, which can be equipped with lasers as powerful as 30 kW, could potentially be deployed in scenarios where rapid response is necessary.

A Weapon of Precision and Power

Despite these hurdles, the potential applications of this technology are vast. Li’s work could pave the way for drones to be used in military conflicts in unprecedented ways, providing precision strikes with high-powered lasers. Moreover, this compact solution could have broader implications for the defense industry, as it allows the power of a traditional laser weapon system to be carried on much smaller, more agile platforms.

Global Implications for Arms Control

With the gradual transition of this technology from research to the deployment stage, important questions are thrown upon military strategy and international regulation of arms control. In direct relation to the increased prevalence of drones in modern warfare, there is a corresponding increase in the need for an international conversation about the ethics and regulations surrounding laser-enabled drones.

</excerpt>

In a technological brilliance and holiday spirit, US-based drone company Sky Elements has been seen on social media with one of the largest drone light shows ever held. The breathtaking performance took place in Mansfield, Texas, where 5,000 unmanned aerial vehicles flew over a field ahead of Christmas, setting a new Guinness World Record. This was an impressive feat after the company’s previous record-breaking show a week earlier, which used 2,500 drones.

This show was made possible by a collaboration between Sky Elements and UVify, the drone technology company. The finale featured a giant, glowing Santa Claus in his sleigh, pulled by two massive reindeer. As the evening sky darkened, the drones took flight, forming intricate LED light displays. The crowd cheered as Santa waved from his sleigh filled with presents.

It is said that the viral video of the show has gained over 98 million views and 5.5 million likes on Instagram. People took the platform by storm with excitement. “This is absolutely incredible! Technology and Christmas magic coming together in such an amazing way.” The precision of the drones is just mind-blowing! It’s like watching the future unfold before your eyes. Some people were really excited by the eco-friendly feature: “This is a far greener alternative to traditional light shows and fireworks – love it!”

</excerpt>

In a recent escalation of violence in Manipur, at least three individuals have been killed in Jiribam district. This new wave of violence comes on the heels of a deadly rocket attack in Bishnupur, where an elderly man was killed and five others were injured.

Details of the Recent Violence

According to a security officer stationed in Manipur, the number of casualties may rise. The violence began early in the morning when militants entered a village and killed a resident. The ongoing clashes are part of the ethnic violence that has plagued the state. The casualties reported include individuals from both the Kuki and Meitei communities.

Escalation of Violence in Recent Days

The conflict in Manipur has intensified over the past 17 months, with the situation deteriorating significantly in the last five days. On Friday night, following the killing in Bishnupur, mobs in Imphal attempted to raid the headquarters of the 2 Manipur Rifles and 7 Manipur Rifles. Security forces managed to thwart these attempts.

Rockets and Drones: New Tools of Conflict

Friday’s rocket attack represents the first known use of rockets in the state since the onset of the conflict. This development comes just six days after drones were first weaponized. Manipur police reported that Kuki militants used long-range rockets in the attack. The rockets, described as being at least four feet long, were reportedly made from galvanized iron pipes filled with explosives and launched from makeshift rocket launchers.

Impact on Education and Security

In response to the surge in violence, the Manipur administration has ordered all educational institutions across the state to remain closed on Saturday. The conflict, which began on May 3 of the previous year, has seen an increase in the use of advanced weaponry, including drones and rockets, adding a new dimension to the ongoing violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities.

The use of these new technologies indicates a shift in tactics by the militants, who have been practicing with these weapons during periods of relative calm. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing clashes and the potential for further escalation as both sides continue to engage in violent confrontations.

</excerpt>

With an aim to bolster its capabilities along with a keen focus on ‘Aatmanirbharta’, the Indian Army on Wednesday unveiled two landmark events; ‘HIM-DRONE-A-THON 2’ and ‘HIMTECH-2024’ designed to harness military technologies for operations in high altitude areas.

Envisaged as an opportunity to the Indian Drone Industry to showcase the capabilities of their drone solutions for high altitude areas, HIM-DRONE-A-THON 2 will take place at Wari La, near Leh on 17-18 September 2024.

This will be followed by HIMTECH-2024 on 20-21 September 2024, an event conceptualised to discuss, demonstrate and discover new avenues for development, incorporation and cross pollination of technology, ideas and innovations with focus on harnessing military technologies for high attitude areas.

Notably, both of these mega events highlights the strong desire of the Indian Army to equip themselves with the latest technology along with a keen focus on ‘indigenousness’ as the deadlock between India and China at LAC continues since the deadly classes in Galwan back in 2020.

Speaking at the curtain raiser of the event at Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, Major General CS Mann, Additional Director General of the Army Design Bureau, highlighted that the Indian Army is deployed from icy heights of the Siachen Glacier to the rugged Himalayas where its soldiers face unparalleled adversities daily. Talking about the tough conditions the armed personel have to face at mountainous peaks, Maj Gen Mann emphasised that “at such heights and due to strong winds, many a times drone usage results in reduced lift and degraded engine performance.” “These conditions are unique for Indian Army and demand systems that can adequately perform in these conditions.

Since such altitude battlefields are not prevalent anywhere else, tailormade, indigenous solutions are the way forward”, he said.
“If the indigenous industry succeeds here, it also opens vistas for them to international arena and establish India as a credible drone manufacturing hub”, he added.

HIM-DRONE-A-THON-2 is planned to be conducted under actual terrain and environmental conditions at altitude of 4000-5000 meters. The event is open to all indigenous drone manufactures and invites their participation for demonstration of Surveillance drones, Loitering munitions, Logistics Drones, Swarm Drones and drones with specific capabilities / role / payloads ie; Electronic Warfare, Synthetic Aperture Radar, Communication Intelligence and Electronic Intelligence.

As of now more than 25 Drone manufacturing firms have registered for participation in the event. All the firms will be competing in a multifaceted competition at super high-altitude area for proving their suitability and capabilities.

HIMTECH 2024 is being held for the first time in Leh, to highlight and focus on development of technology and system for meeting operational requirements along the Northern Borders and the event is being held in collaboration with FICCI.
On the use of Chinese technology and their spare parts in the Indian defence industry, Major General Bhatti said that there are concerns regarding the use of Chinese technology, especially in the domain of electronic warfare.

“We have seen it in the past how this Chinese technology can be a threat and we are evolving with time and taking bold steps in order to avoid the use of Chinese technology”, he added.

</excerpt>

On Wednesday, Hezbollah launched over 50 rockets and a swarm of drones toward northern Israel, targeting homes in the Golan Heights. The attack resulted in at least one person being injured. This escalation follows an Israeli strike on Lebanon the previous night that killed one person and injured 19 others.

US Mediation Efforts and Ceasefire Negotiations

The latest rocket attacks coincide with heightened diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing violence between Israel and Hamas. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently met with mediators from Egypt and Qatar in an attempt to broker a ceasefire. However, there has been scepticism about the viability of a pause in fighting.

A proposed agreement has reportedly faced criticism from both Hamas and Egyptian officials. Egypt expressed doubts about the US’s promises, stating that they lack the guarantees needed for a lasting ceasefire. Concerns also persist over whether Israel would withdraw from key areas, such as the Philadelphi corridor, which Hamas demands.

Tensions and Controversies in Negotiations

Amid the discussions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been accused of sabotaging potential agreements by insisting on maintaining Israeli troops in the Philadelphi corridor. An anonymous official involved in the negotiations suggested that Netanyahu’s stance has complicated the efforts, increasing suspicions and hindering progress.

Hamas has rejected the latest proposal, labeling it a reversal of previous agreements and accusing the US of conceding to new conditions from Israel.

Conflict Casualties and Broader Implications

The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. The Israeli assault on Gaza has killed over 40,000 Palestinians. Meanwhile, Hezbollah’s recent actions have resulted in nearly 600 deaths in Lebanon, including civilians and fighters. On the Israeli side, 23 soldiers and 26 civilians have been reported killed.

International and Regional Impact

The conflict has also affected international maritime routes. A commercial ship in the Red Sea came under attack, believed to be by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, leaving it drifting and ablaze.

The situation remains fluid, with continued efforts by international mediators to de-escalate the violence and address the underlying issues fueling the conflict.

</excerpt>

A group of seven dogs, stranded on a patch of land in the middle of the overflowing Cauvery River near Mettur Dam for three days without food, were fed biryani via drone by fire and rescue services personnel on Friday. The dogs are expected to be rescued on Sunday.

Rescuers are waiting for the arrival of another drone with a 30kg carrying capacity to aid in the operation. The fire services have partnered with GEOTechnoValley, a company specializing in drone services, for this mission.

P Sarveswaran, director and CEO of GEOTechnoValley, stated, “We will assemble the drone on Saturday. Since it is Aadi 18, there will be a large crowd at the riverside.” The situation became known after a drone video showing the water gushing from the 16-channel sluice gates of Mettur Dam went viral on Thursday. Initially, the video only showed a black dog on the riverine islet created by the heavy flow in the Cauvery.

K P Venkatesan, house officer at Mettur fire station, reached out to Sarveswaran, who provides drone services every Aadi 18 in Mettur to drop life jackets for people caught in the currents. This led to the discovery of six additional dogs stranded there. It was found that when the outflow from Mettur Dam increased three days earlier, local residents had tried to chase the dogs away from the riverbank. Instead of moving away from the river, the dogs had retreated to the dry riverbed, which was subsequently covered by the released water.

On Sunday, officials plan to use a heavy-duty drone equipped with food in a cage-like structure. Once a dog enters the cage, the door will close, allowing the animal to be lifted from the islet, Sarveswaran explained.

</excerpt>

In a predawn operation on Tuesday, a team of Gurgaon Police ventured into the wilderness of Gurgaon’s Aravalli hills near Rithoj village, acting on intel gathered from drone images. What they discovered was a clandestine bootlegging operation, with a gang of seven individuals, including a minor, allegedly running the illicit enterprise.

The police team, comprising 20 officers, swooped in on the gang and seized 1,600 litres of spurious raw liquor stored in barrels, drums, and plastic canisters. According to DCP (South) Sidhant Jain, the area had been under surveillance for illegal activity for over six months, but patrolling was hindered by the terrain and harsh daytime temperatures.

The accused were allegedly producing the illicit liquor using a mix of jaggery, special tree bark, spices, and water. The finished product was reportedly sold in 700 ml bottles for Rs 80 each, distributed to local village residents via motorcycles.

During this Aravalli hills raid, the police seized about 50 litres of finished country liquor, along with equipment used in the distillation process, including eight barrels, two iron drums, eight plastic drums, and three plastic cans. Additionally, a crate, an axe, a shovel, two earthen utensils, and three plastic pipes were recovered from the accused.

The accused individuals, identified as Sache, Ganga, Manoj, Anil, Khemchand, all residents of Rithoj, and Munshiram, a resident of Sahjivas, were arrested under the Excise Act for setting up an illegal liquor distillery and producing spurious liquor.

Police are now questioning the accused to determine if more groups are operating in the area and gathering details of their clientele. The raid underscores the authorities’ efforts to crack down on illicit liquor operations in the region and ensure public safety.

</excerpt>

Two drones manufactured in China and approximately 560 grams of suspected heroin were confiscated in separate operations near the border areas of Punjab’s Amritsar on Monday, as per the Border Security Force (BSF).

According to an official statement, on May 13, 2024, during nighttime, vigilant BSF troops intercepted the movement of a drone in the border area of Amritsar district and tracked its trajectory. The potential dropping zone was cordoned off, and an extensive search was conducted. At around 03:50 am, BSF troops successfully recovered one small drone and one packet of suspected heroin in a farming field in Ratankhurd village of Amritsar district.

“The recovered packet (weighing approximately 560 grams) was wrapped in yellow adhesive tape, and one metal wire ring & three illuminating sticks were also found attached to the packet,” the BSF stated.

The retrieved drone is a Quadcopter (Model – DJI Mavic 3 Classic, manufactured in China), it further mentioned.

Similarly, in another operation on Monday, based on information from the BSF intelligence wing regarding the presence of a drone in the border area of Amritsar district, BSF troops conducted an extensive search operation in the suspected area. During the search operation around 09:05 am, the troops recovered one drone from a dry well in Dhanoe khurd village of Amritsar district.

The retrieved drone is identified as a China-made DJI Mavic 3 Classic.

The BSF noted that the reliable input from the BSF intelligence wing and the timely action of diligent BSF troops thwarted yet another attempt of drone intrusion from across the border.

In a joint operation, Punjab Police and Border Security Force (BSF) downed three trans-border rogue drones and recovered 12 kgs of heroin over the last week.

Taking to Twitter Director General of Police, Punjab, Gaurav Yadav tweeted, “Tarn Taran Police, working jointly with @BSF_India has downed three trans-border rogue drones in the last one week and recovered 12 kgs #Heroin Major blow to trans-border smuggling networks operating in the international border.”

Meanwhile, a Hexacopter drone that contained 5 kgs of heroin was recovered by Tarn Taran Police, during its joint search operation with the BSF.

“Tarn Taran Police in a joint search operation with @BSF_India have recovered a Hexacopter drone equipped with modern technology & packets containing #Heroin weighing 5Kgs from fields near the Indo-Pak border,” the DGP tweeted.

So far 16 drones have been shot this year and the force has also adopted an anti-drone system and in-depth patrolling to take down unmanned aerial vehicles.

“While rogue drones have emerged as a new security challenge for the BSF, we haven’t yet achieved success with any one mechanism to counter them. Hence, we have adopted three to four ways of dealing with this threat and they have been giving very good results,” BSF DG said.

At some specific locations (along the India-Pakistan border) anti-drone systems were installed.

“As the border is vast, anti-drone systems cannot be installed at all places. However, the system would be installed at more places in the coming days,” Singh said.

Moreover, three-four km of in-depth patrolling has been started by the BSF to collect illegal items.

“We have also given very good incentives to our jawans who shoot down these drones. Due to these efforts, we have shot down 16 drones this year till November, which is significantly more than just one drone shot down last year. The number of drones shot down is likely to increase to 25 by the end of this year,” Singh said.

Earlier on 28 November, a hexacopter drone weighing 18.050 kg carrying 3.110 kgs narcotics was shot down by women personnel of the BSF in Chaharpur village in Amritsar.

However, trained Kites and dogs are being used to prey on enemy drones and to deal with drones sent from across the border.

The United States on Monday imposed penalties on 14 people and 28 businesses it claimed were a part of a global network that bought equipment to aid Moscow in its invasion of Ukraine. The measures were aimed at the supply networks used by the Russian military.

Additionally, the US Treasury targeted Suleiman Kerimov’s relatives as well as people it claimed served as financial intermediaries in Suleiman’s network.

“The United States will continue to disrupt Russia’s military supply chains and impose high costs on President Putin’s enablers, as well as all those who support Russia’s brutality against its neighbor,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

A Russian microelectronics firm called Milandr that Washington claims is a part of Moscow’s military R&D infrastructure was put on the blacklist by the U.S. Treasury. Along with several company executives, it has also designated three entities connected to the company.

The Russian embassy in Washington called the new round of sanctions “blackmail”.

“Apparently, the administration does not realize in any way that restrictions are unable to influence the sovereign foreign policy of our country,” the embassy said in a statement on its Telegram messaging app.

The Commerce Department has stopped exports of American-made parts and technologies that were used in some of Russia’s military hardware, and the U.S. Treasury has imposed sanctions on significant Russian military industrial firms.

Drones that Russia acquired from Iran were used to strike Ukrainian cities and power facilities. As a result of Tehran’s nuclear development programme, the United States has already imposed severe sanctions on Iranian military groups and enterprises.
