</excerpt>

External affairs minister S Jaishankar is likely to go to China in the third week of July to take part in a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) foreign ministers’ meeting and for bilateral interactions with important Chinese leaders, officials familiar with the issue said.

First Visit for Jaishankar Since 2020 LAC Standoff

This will be Jaishankar’s first visit to China since a military standoff in the Ladakh sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which began in April-May 2020, plunged bilateral relations to their lowest point in six decades. Since India and China reached an understanding on ending the face-off last October, Jaishankar has met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the margins of multilateral events several times.

Bilateral Talks with Wang Yi Ahead of SCO Foreign Ministers Meet

Jaishankar will also travel to Beijing for a bilateral meeting with Wang prior to attending the meeting of the SCO Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs on July 14 and 15, the individuals said on condition of anonymity. The bilateral meeting will be a follow-up to a series of senior-level meetings between Indian and Chinese officials aimed at normalising ties and resolving the long-standing border row.

Jaishankar to Focus on De-escalation, Trade Normalization, and Connectivity

Efforts to accelerate de-escalation and troop withdrawal to peacetime locations along the LAC and steps to normalise relations in fields like trade and people-to-people contacts are likely to feature in Jaishankar’s talks with Wang, the individuals stated. Although the two sides recently agreed to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in Tibet after a five-year gap, Beijing has urged normalization of trade and restoration of direct flights.

Indian Concerns Over Rare Earths and Market Access

The Indian side has also raised China’s export restrictions on rare earth minerals used in everything from smartphones to electric cars and in many of which Beijing has a near-monopoly and long-standing issues regarding inadequate access to Chinese markets.

National security adviser Ajit Doval travelled to China last December and in June to participate in a meeting of the SCO Security Council Secretaries in Beijing. Doval and Wang, the Special Representatives for the border issue, also met in a bilateral meeting. This was followed by a visit by defence minister Rajnath Singh to participate in a meeting of the SCO defence ministers in Qingdao. At a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun, Singh demanded a structured framework of “permanent engagement and de-escalation” and urged a “permanent solution of border demarcation”.

All Eyes on the Upcoming SCO Council of Ministers Meeting

The next SCO Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting will be keenly observed whether it brings forth a joint communique. The last month’s meeting of COAS defence ministers of the SCO could not release a communique as India was adamant on not signing the document when Pakistan demanded that it could not mention the Pahalgam terror attack.

Jaishankar will also be holding bilateral talks with Russian and some of the Central Asian counterparts on the sidelines of the SCO meet.

The Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs typically holds a month prior to the SCO Summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to be present at this year’s summit, and it will be his first trip to China since the LAC military standoff.

Jaishankar delivers a stern 3-point message to Pakistan on terrorism, nuclear blackmail, and bilateral engagement.
</excerpt>

India is intolerant to terrorism and will never succumb to nuclear blackmail, external affairs minister S Jaishankar stated on Friday after informing Germany’s highest leadership about the new strategy to counter cross-border terror sponsored by Pakistan.

Jaishankar Shares Bilateral Stance on Pakistan

Jaishankar indicated that there would be no space for third-party intervention in India’s interactions with Pakistan while speaking at a news conference with his counterpart from Germany, Johann Wadephul in Berlin. He also expressed India’s gratitude to Germany for its support at the moment when the nation was reacting to the Pahalgam attack.

“India has zero tolerance for terrorism. India will never give in to nuclear blackmail. And India will deal with Pakistan purely bilaterally,” Jaishankar said. “There should be no confusion in any quarter in that regard.”

Wadephul said Germany was “appalled by the brutal terrorist attack” at Pahalgam last month and had “condemned this attack on civilians in the strongest terms”. He added: “Germany will support any fight against terrorism. Terrorism must never have a place anywhere in the world and this is why we will support everyone who has to fight terrorism.”

Jaishankar asserted he had talked to Wadephul on May 7, the day the Operation Sindoor was launched aimed at attacking terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan, and asserted India appreciated the country’s support for the perception that “every nation has a right to defend itself against terrorism”.

Jaishankar On Strengthening Indo-German Security Ties

Defense and security formed a major component of the two foreign ministers’ negotiations, with Jaishankar stressing Germany’s role as a significant partner. Wadephul stated that the two nations have the shared aspiration to uphold the rules-based world order.

“India has a very special importance as a strong actor in security policy in a strategically important region,” Wadephul said.

Referring to the clashes between India and Pakistan that ended on May 10 with an understanding on stopping military actions, Wadephul said: “The fact that a truce is now in place is something we appreciate very much. What is important now is that this truce remains stable, that dialogue can happen in order to find bilateral solutions for that conflict, taking into account the vital interests on both sides.”

Jaishankar spoke to India’s fight against terrorism with senior German leaders while an all-party delegation chaired by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi presented Russian political leaders and parliamentarians in Moscow with the justification behind Operation Sindoor.

PM Modi’s Message to Germany

At his meeting with Merz in Berlin, Jaishankar conveyed the wishes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed appreciation for “Germany’s solidarity as India counters the challenge of terrorism”. The two sides will work to expand the bilateral strategic partnership, he said in a social media post.

India’s fight against terrorism also featured in Jaishankar’s interaction with Günter Sautter, the foreign and security policy advisor to the German chancellor. “Shared views on key international issues, including fighting terrorism. Our enhanced partnership is a significant determinant of stability in a world of uncertainty. We will also cooperate to build resilience and confidence,” he stated.

Jaishankar Reaffirming Anti-Terror Commitment in Germany

Jaishankar, who is on a three-country tour of Europe already having visited the Netherlands and Denmark, met German Bundestag or Parliament members on Thursday and talked about “India’s firm commitment of combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations”.

In Moscow, the bipartisan delegation headed by Kanimozhi updated members of the Federation Council or upper house and the Duma or the lower house about India’s new strategy in countering cross-border terrorism from Pakistan. The delegation also met with Russia’s deputy foreign minister Andrey Rudenko.

Russia Condemns Pahalgam Attack

“The Russian side condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and stated that Russia stands in solidarity with India for elimination of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations! Russia and India have a shared position in the fight against terrorism,” the Indian embassy in Moscow said on social media after the delegation met Andrey Denisov, the deputy chair of the committee on international affairs in the upper house, and other senators.

The team also met Leonid Slutsky, chair of the Duma committee on international affairs, and other members of the lower house. The delegation, which includes Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai, BJP MP Brijesh Chowta, RJD MP Prem Chand Gupta, AAP MP Ashok Kumar Mittal, and former ambassador Manjeev Puri, will also travel to Slovenia, Greece, Latvia and Spain.

Japanese Leaders Express Support

The all-party delegation led by Janata Dal-United MP Sanjay Kumar Jha that is visiting Japan interacted with the Japan-India Parliamentary Friendship League led by Yasutoshi Nishimura in Tokyo on Friday. “India’s resolute stance of zero tolerance towards terrorism was conveyed. Members of the league expressed support for India’s resolve to counter cross border terrorism,” the Indian embassy said after the meeting.

At a separate meeting with the delegation, Japan’s Speaker Fukushiro Nukaga expressed his support for India’s national resolve to combat terrorism. The delegation also met Japan’s former defence minister Minoru Kihara and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leaders Shinako Tsuchiya and Yasuhiro Hanashi and discussed the zero tolerance approach to terrorism.

UAE Visit Highlights Counter-Terror Cooperation

Another all-party delegation led by Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, which is visiting the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE), met Nikolay Mladenov, head of the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy in Abu Dhabi, and exchanged views on boosting cooperation in counter-terrorism and combating radicalism.

India is sending seven all-party delegations to 33 countries around the world to highlight Pakistan’s role in supporting cross-border terrorism and to urge the world community to pressure Islamabad to crack down on terror groups.

</excerpt>

Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi will start his first visit to New Delhi tonight. On Thursday, he will meet his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar and the two of them shall co-chair the 20th Joint Commission meeting between India and Iran.

75th Anniversary of India-Iran Friendship Treaty

This year’s summit arrives on the occasion when New Delhi and Tehran are marking the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty. In the bilateral session, both countries will discuss the full range of relations, examining new avenues and reinforcing existing bonds.

Although the Joint Commission is meant to meet annually, there has been a lapse in its meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic and domestic concerns of the two nations. “The latest status of the implementation of bilateral economic agreements between the two countries will be reviewed and followed up in the course of the commission’s work,” Iran’s Embassy in New Delhi posted on X.

Post-bilateral talks, the Iranian foreign minister will also meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Visit Amidst India-Pakistan Tensions

The visit by Mr Araghchi follows increased tension between India and Pakistan following a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam where 26 civilians were martyred by Pakistani terror links operatives. India retaliated with precise missile strikes against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Iran has condemned the religiously-motivated terror strike in Kashmir by Pakistan-related terrorists. In a statement released by the foreign minister himself, Tehran stated “Iran strongly and unequivocally condemns the terrorist attack against tourists in Pahalgam. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the people & government of India.”

Tehran Calls for Restraint

Iran also reacted to growing Indian-Pakistani military tensions, calling for restraint from both nations. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei explained that Tehran had maintained long-time relations with Islamabad and New Delhi and regards the current situation very seriously.

He hoped that the two countries would act to keep the situation from getting worse.

Earlier this week, Mr Araghchi had visited Pakistan, heading a political mission and holding meetings with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar.

</excerpt>

Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has called on India and Pakistan to resolve their differences bilaterally through political and diplomatic channels.

Telephone Conversation of Lavrov with S Jaishankar

During a telephone conversation with his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar on May 2, Lavrov spoke about bilateral relations between Russia and India as well as the recent escalation in tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad following the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which left 26 dead.

Lavrov Advocates for Bilateral Diplomatic Resolution

“They discussed issues of Russian-Indian cooperation and the aggravation of Indian-Pakistani relations following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Sergey Lavrov called for settling disagreements between New Delhi and Islamabad on a bilateral basis by political and diplomatic means per the provisions of the Simla Agreement of 1972 and the Lahore Declaration of 1999,” a release issued by the ministry of foreign affairs of the Russian Federation said, according to ANI.

“The ministers also discussed the schedule of upcoming contacts at the highest levels,” it added.

After the terror attack, India initiated a series of steps in response to Pakistan’s patronage of cross-border terrorism. These were suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, shutting down the Integrated Check Post at Attari, and diluting the staffing of High Commissions.

India’s Measures Against Pakistan Following the Attack

The Indian government also revoked all categories of visas issued to Pakistani citizens and asked them to depart by April 30. India also shut down its airspace for Pakistan Airlines-operated flights.

Pakistan retaliated by suspending all trade with India, including to and from any third nation via Pakistan, and prohibited Indian airlines from using its airspace. Pakistani troops have also been breaching ceasefire along the border for the eighth straight day, indulging in small arms fire along the LoC in five districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Modi’s Statement on National Resolve

During a crucial security meeting on April 29, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the security forces have complete operational freedom to decide the mode, the targets, and the timing of India’s retaliation to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

“It is our national resolve to deliver a crushing blow to terrorism,” Modi said, according to sources in the government.

Marco Rubio to Call Jaishankar, Dar Over Pahalgam Attack

<excerpt>US Secretary Marco Rubio to call India’s Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Dar, urges both sides to avoid escalation.
</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will call on his Indian and Pakistani counterparts not to escalate, his spokeswoman said Tuesday, as tensions are through the roof between the long-standing arch-rivals following a fatal attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.

“We are reaching out to both parties and telling, of course, them to not escalate the situation,” State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce told reporters.

Diplomatic Push by Marco Rubio

“The secretary expects to speak with the foreign ministers of Pakistan and India as early as today or tomorrow,” she said.

“He is encouraging other national leaders, other foreign ministers, to also reach out to the countries on this issue,” she said.

The United States, which is a close ally of India, had first expressed support following the April 22 attack when gunmen gunned down 26 men in the tourist center of Pahalgam.

India Holds Pakistan Responsible

The brutal assault in Pahalgam, which targeted civilians most of them tourists visiting the scenic Kashmir region has sparked outrage across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior security officials have vowed a strong response, raising fears of a military escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors. India has blamed the attack on foreign militants, with officials pointing to Pakistan-based groups, a claim Islamabad firmly denies.

Marco Rubio emphasizing on diplomacy follows comments by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the army would have “operational freedom” to counter the attack.

Global Concerns Over Escalation

India blames Pakistan for supporting the assault. Pakistan refuses the accusation but has long deplored Indian domination of partitioned, Muslim-ruled Kashmir.

The region of Kashmir has been a flashpoint for decades, with both India and Pakistan claiming it in full but controlling parts of it. This latest attack, one of the deadliest in recent years, threatens to undo recent diplomatic gains made between the two nations and reignites global concern over potential conflict.

</excerpt>

Ms. Hope Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence (DNI) in the United States, met India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. Mumbai on Monday evening will see S Jaishankar. Embodying the increasing strategic partnership between India and the United States, the meeting turned on major worldwide and regional security issues.

The chat underscores India’s increasing involvement with the United States on diplomatic, intelligence, and security matters in light of changing world events. Dr. Jaishankar tweeted following the meeting and said it was a helpful conversation on current worldwide and regional security problems.

Reinforcing the friendly India-US partnership.

Particularly in the area of defense and intelligence sharing, Gabbard’s visit represents a major step in enhancing bilateral ties. Counter terrorism, Indo-Pacific stability, and cyber security are among the many security fronts on which India and the United States have been working together. Such gatherings are very important in encouraging mutual understanding and cooperation in light of the present political situation.

Regional and worldwide issues

The conversation occurs when the world has growing security worries including Indo-Pacific dispute, the Russian-Ukraine conflict, and changing Middle Eastern dynamics. Both sides are to be asked to investigate means of improving intelligence cooperation and contributing to regional stability preservation.

Jaishankar stressed that border stability is key to improving bilateral ties.
</excerpt>

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi believes that ties between Beijing and New Delhi have improved over the past year. Speaking to the media on Friday, he outlined China’s foreign policy goals. When asked about India, he stressed the need for cooperation and mutual growth.

Focus on Development and Cooperation

Wang Yi urged both nations to prioritize their economic growth and progress. He stated, “The countries should support each other rather than consume each other, and cooperate closely rather than guard against each other.” He emphasized that collaboration, not competition, should define their relationship.

He also pointed out that China and India must work together to support the development of the Global South. According to him, their border issues should not dictate their overall relationship.

Jaishankar Calls for Stability and Mutual Respect

A day before Wang’s comments, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared his perspective on India-China relations. Speaking at a panel discussion at Chatham House in London, he stressed India’s desire for a stable and balanced relationship with China.

India Wants Respect and Sensitivity

Jaishankar highlighted the need for both sides to recognize each other’s interests and concerns. “The key issue is how to create a stable equilibrium and transition into the next phase of equilibriums. We want a stable relationship where our interests are respected, our sensitivities are recognized, and where it works for both of us. That is the main challenge in our relationship,” he said.

Border Stability is Crucial

He also pointed out that peaceful borders have strengthened ties between India and China for the past 40 years. However, he warned that instability along the border could negatively impact their relationship. “If the border is unstable, not peaceful, or not tranquil, it will inevitably affect the growth and direction of our relationship,” he stated.

Discussions for a Better Future

Jaishankar confirmed that both countries are currently in talks to find ways to create a more stable, predictable, and positive relationship.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that the shift in US foreign policy under President Donald Trump was “expected” and that several of his administration’s actions were “promising for India.” He noted that these changes align with India’s interests in many ways.

Move Towards Multipolarity

Speaking at an event hosted by Chatham House in collaboration with the Indian High Commission in the UK, Jaishankar highlighted how the evolving White House policies contribute to a multipolar world. “I think we see a President and an administration which, in our parlance, is moving towards multipolarity. And that is something which suits India,” he said.

Expected Policy Direction

Jaishankar explained that political leaders often follow through on long-standing agendas, even if they do not achieve everything they aim for. “Much of what we have seen and heard over the last few weeks was to be expected. So, I’m a little surprised that people are surprised,” he remarked while speaking with Chatham House Director Bronwen Maddox.

Discussion on India’s Role in Global Affairs

During the session, Jaishankar engaged in a meaningful discussion on India’s foreign policy, regional issues, and global economic challenges. He also provided updates on the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), emphasizing its significance in strengthening economic ties and fostering growth.

Pro-Khalistan Protesters Disrupt Event

As Jaishankar left the venue, pro-Khalistan protesters confronted him outside. In a viral video, a man ran towards his vehicle and tore the Indian national flag. The incident took place in front of London police officers, who did not intervene despite the vandalism. The security breach raised concerns about the safety of Indian officials abroad.

India Demands Stronger Security Measures

India emphasized the need for host nations to ensure the safety of visiting dignitaries. The MEA stressed that such disruptions must not be allowed to affect diplomatic engagements.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar strongly criticized Bangladesh’s interim government for repeatedly blaming India for its internal issues. He called the allegations “absolutely ridiculous” and questioned how Bangladesh could claim to seek good relations while constantly accusing India. “You cannot, on the one hand, say that ‘I would now like to have good relations with you,’ but I wake up every morning and blame you for everything that goes wrong,” Jaishankar said at a public event in New Delhi.

India’s Deep Ties with Bangladesh

Jaishankar highlighted India’s historic bond with Bangladesh, which dates back to 1971 when the Indian Army helped liberate East Pakistan. He urged Bangladesh’s leadership to “make up their minds” about the kind of relationship they want with India.

Rising Attacks on Minorities in Bangladesh

The minister pointed out two major concerns affecting India-Bangladesh relations. The first issue is the recent wave of attacks on Bangladesh’s Hindu minority. “What is very concerning for us is the spate of attacks on the minorities. It obviously is something that impacts our thinking. It is something we have to speak up about, which we have done,” he said. These attacks intensified after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India in August 2024 following public protests against her government.

While India has repeatedly raised concerns, Bangladesh has downplayed the violence. Instead, Dhaka has demanded Hasina’s extradition, accusing her of committing “mass genocide” against protestors and running an “authoritarian” and “India-leaning” regime.

Political Tensions and India’s Stance

Jaishankar also spoke about Bangladesh’s internal politics, calling it a matter of agreement or disagreement. He stressed that India wants stability in the region but does not appreciate the interim government’s hostile remarks. “New Delhi has sent a clear message that we want things to calm down. But we don’t appreciate their constant hostile messaging towards India,” he said.

High-Level Talks Amid Strained Relations

Jaishankar’s remarks come days after his meeting with Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Touhid Hossain in Oman. Their discussion followed a previous meeting in September 2024 at the UN General Assembly in New York, marking the first high-level talks since Hasina’s exit. Despite ongoing diplomatic engagement, tensions between the two nations remain high.

</excerpt>

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday condemned the Canadian government for “hypocrisy towards freedom of speech,” after Canada reportedly blocked social media pages and handles of the Australian diaspora news outlet Australia Today. This move came shortly after the outlet broadcast Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar’s press conference in Canberra alongside his Australian counterpart, Penny Wong.

The MEA highlighted that Jaishankar, in his media address, had openly criticized Canada for making unsubstantiated allegations against India, conducting “unacceptable surveillance” of Indian diplomats, and providing political space for anti-India elements. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the weekly briefing, stating, “We understand that the social media handles, pages of this particular outlet, which is an important diaspora outlet, have been blocked and are not available for viewers in Canada. This happened just hours after the outlet broadcasted Dr. S. Jaishankar’s press conference with Penny Wong. It appears quite strange to us.”

Jaiswal further described these actions as indicative of Canada’s “hypocrisy toward freedom of speech,” adding that people could draw their own conclusions regarding the timing of the channel’s blocking.

Jaishankar’s Australia Visit and Security Concerns Addressed with Wong

Jaiswal also elaborated on Jaishankar’s ongoing visit to Australia, noting that the minister met with the Australian business community and attended the 15th India-Australia Framework Dialogue with Wong. Security concerns and bilateral issues were central topics during the discussions.

Concerns over Hindu Temple Attack and Security of Indian Consulate

Jaiswal brought attention to the recent attack on the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton on November 3, calling on the Canadian government to uphold the rule of law. He also expressed disappointment over the Canadian security authorities’ inability to assure adequate protection to the Indian consulate in Toronto, which led to the cancellation of scheduled consular camps.

“The consulate camp was intended to assist the Indian diaspora, especially those needing documentation for pensions and other activities,” he said. Jaiswal confirmed that while consular camps in Toronto had been canceled due to security concerns, they would continue in other regions, such as Vancouver, where community organizations felt assured of safety.

India’s Foreign Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar, made a strong case for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, stressing that reforms in global institutions are essential for establishing a fairer world order.

During the BRICS Summit, Dr. Jaishankar remarked, “BRICS showcases how deeply the traditional global order is evolving. However, many historical inequalities still remain, and some have taken on new forms. We can observe this in unequal access to development resources, advanced technology, and skills. Moreover, the advantages of globalization have not been evenly distributed.” He emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing conflicts have disproportionately affected the Global South, particularly in areas like healthcare, food, and fuel security.

Urgency to Meet Sustainable Development Goals

Dr. Jaishankar also expressed concern that the world is at risk of falling far behind in meeting its sustainable development goals. He asked, “How can we establish a more just global system?” His answer: by enhancing and broadening independent platforms, giving more alternatives in various sectors, and reducing unnecessary reliance on entities that could be exploited. “This is where BRICS can play a vital role in supporting the Global South,” he explained.

He further argued that reforms should not stop with the UN Security Council. “Established global institutions, including the multilateral development banks, need an overhaul. Their outdated operational models, much like the UN’s, no longer meet current global needs,” Jaishankar added.

Growth and Challenges in Production and Consumption

In his address, Dr. Jaishankar acknowledged that despite the ongoing transformations in global dynamics, several long-standing issues have only become more complicated. “We are witnessing increasing diversity in both production and consumption. Countries that once fought for independence from colonialism have accelerated their socio-economic development. New capabilities are being utilized, tapping into a broader pool of talent. This has led to an economic, political, and cultural shift, bringing us closer to achieving genuine multi-polarity.”

Jaishankar Echoes Modi: “This is Not an Era of War”

Dr. Jaishankar also emphasized the importance of addressing conflicts and tensions effectively in today’s geopolitical landscape. Reiterating Prime Minister Modi’s stance, he said, “This is not an era of war.” He further explained that disputes should be resolved through diplomatic dialogue. “Once agreements are reached, they must be honored with sincerity. International law must be followed without exceptions, and there should be zero tolerance for terrorism,” he stated.

Addressing the situation in West Asia, Jaishankar pointed out that the region is of particular concern due to the risk of the conflict escalating. “There is widespread concern that the conflict may expand further in the Middle East. Maritime trade has already been severely impacted, and the humanitarian and material consequences are significant. Any solution must be both fair and sustainable, moving toward a two-state solution,” he concluded.

</excerpt>

India and China have successfully completed military disengagement in eastern Ladakh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed on Monday. Speaking at an event organized by NDTV, Jaishankar’s statement followed an earlier announcement by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, indicating a breakthrough in the longstanding border stand-off.

Agreement Reached After Extensive Discussions

During the event, Jaishankar said, “What the Foreign Secretary has said, I can also say… We have reached an agreement… Disengagements with China have been completed.” He further noted that Indian and Chinese troops would resume normal patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), restoring the situation to pre-May 2020 conditions when tensions escalated.

Foreign Secretary Misri explained that this agreement is a result of weeks of diplomatic and military discussions. “Indian and Chinese negotiators have been in close contact,” Misri said, underscoring that the agreement aims to resolve the border issues that surfaced in 2020.

Origins of the Stand-Off

The stand-off, which began in May 2020, saw Chinese troops crossing the LAC, leading to violent confrontations, including the deadly clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, where 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives. The incident severely strained relations between the two nations.

While Jaishankar and Misri have confirmed the disengagement, further details about the process remain undisclosed. Disengagement refers to the withdrawal of troops from friction points, while de-escalation involves the removal of heavy military assets such as tanks and artillery.

The latest round of disengagement follows previous withdrawals from critical areas like Pangong Tso and the Galwan Valley in 2022. Jaishankar’s announcement comes after a series of high-level meetings, including discussions between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and two rounds of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC).

The announcement coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the BRICS Summit in Russia, where Chinese President Xi Jinping is also present. Speculation suggests that a resolution of the Ladakh dispute could potentially facilitate a bilateral meeting between Modi and Xi on the sidelines of the summit.

Jaishankar, to Pakistan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting on October 16 has generated discussions about a possible shift in India-Pakistan relations. Speaking exclusively to India Today, former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed optimism that Jaishankar’s visit could signal a fresh beginning for bilateral ties.

Call for Resumption of the Peace Process

Sharif emphasized the need to reignite the stalled peace process between India and Pakistan, pointing out the longstanding tensions between the two nations. He urged both countries to move forward and address pressing global issues, such as energy and climate change, in a collaborative manner.

“We should pick up the threads from where we left,” Sharif said, reflecting on the unresolved disputes that have defined relations over the decades. He added, “75 years have passed like this. Let’s not waste 75 more years.”

Hopes for Prime Minister Modi’s Participation

Sharif expressed his wish that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi could have attended the SCO summit in person. “Would have loved for Modi to come,” Sharif said, while also stressing the importance of good neighborly relations, saying, “Can’t change our neighbours. We should live like good neighbours.”

Jaishankar’s Statement at SCO: A Veiled Message to Pakistan

During the SCO meeting, Jaishankar delivered a speech that indirectly addressed concerns about Pakistan. He highlighted the negative impact of cross-border terrorism, extremism, and separatism on efforts to enhance trade, energy cooperation, and connectivity within the region.

“Our endeavours will progress only when our commitment to the Charter remains firm,” Jaishankar stated. He warned that activities across borders, marked by terrorism and extremism, would hinder any efforts to foster trade, energy flows, and people-to-people exchanges.

Jaishankar Meets Pakistani Officials

Apart from attending the formal SCO meeting, Jaishankar also met with Pakistani Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, a close associate of Nawaz Sharif. The meeting further raised hopes for greater diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

Jaishankar’s visit to Islamabad marks a significant moment, raising speculation about whether the troubled India-Pakistan relationship could see positive developments in the future. However, the challenges posed by security concerns and unresolved disputes remain central to the discussion.

</excerpt>

On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed confidence that India will be able to work with the next U.S. President, regardless of who it may be. Speaking about the upcoming U.S. presidential elections at the launch of Indiaspora’s Impact report in the national capital, Jaishankar stated that India is prepared to collaborate with any U.S. administration.

“Typically, we refrain from commenting on other nations’ elections, just as we expect them not to comment on ours. However, the American system will produce its verdict, and I say this not merely as a formality—over the past 20-plus years, we’ve consistently found ways to work effectively with the President of the United States, whoever they may be,” Jaishankar remarked.

Addressing the current global situation, Jaishankar noted that the world is experiencing an exceptionally challenging period, citing the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Israel. He expressed concern about the potential difficulties in the coming years, mentioning the turmoil in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and East Asia, as well as the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to impact many countries.

Jaishankar also highlighted the economic struggles faced by numerous nations, pointing out challenges in trade, foreign exchange shortages, and various disruptions. Additionally, he underscored the global consequences of climate events, which are causing widespread disruptions and rendering entire regions dysfunctional.

</excerpt>

During his visit to Male on Saturday, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid met with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar. Shahid expressed confidence that India will continue to be a primary ally for the Maldives in times of need. He also noted the economic and diplomatic challenges resulting from the previous government’s anti-India stance and welcomed the current shift towards strengthening relations.

In a post on X, Shahid stated that the Maldives government’s “Anti-India” stance resulted in economic setbacks and a reduction in the country’s international standing.

“Great pleasure to warmly welcome and meet Indian External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar to the Maldives with my colleagues from @MDPSecretariat. The Maldives has always been confident that India will always be the first responder any time the Maldives “dials an international 911,” he wrote in his post.

“The current government’s initial stoking of anti-India sentiments through aggressive slogans, mockery and the branding of a time-tested friend and development partner as a regional bully, has caused a decline in the Maldives’ international standing, economic loss, and many other unnecessary difficulties, and challenges,” Shahid wrote further.

“With this in mind, the MDP welcomes the sudden recalibration of the Maldives-India policy of President Muizzu’s government, from its previous India Out policy. The MDP hopes that this shift will not be temporary or superficial, but consistent and meaningful in the best interests of the people of the Maldives. Further, the MDP calls on the Government of President Muizzu to issue a public apology for the actions, lies and irresponsible comments from its officials which have resulted in significant damage to the Maldives foreign and economic outlook,” he added.

The MDP also released a statement highlighting several projects funded by India.

“The Maldives-India relationship has always been based on the principles of mutual respect, respect for international law, territorial integrity, a common desire for regional security, and an open and peaceful Indian Ocean,” it said.

MDP welcomed Jaishankar’s visit to Addu City, where he handed over the projects funded by India to the Maldives.

MDP noted the significant assistance India has provided to the Maldives over the past five years.

“During the past five years, India has assisted the Maldives in a variety of areas, including the funding of the largest infrastructure project in the country the Greater Male Connectivity Project.
On Thursday, Minister for External Affairs S Jaishankar responded to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s concerns regarding the detention of Indian fishermen in Sri Lanka. Jaishankar acknowledged that 34 Indian fishermen are currently under judicial remand in Sri Lanka, with six others already serving sentences. He emphasized the proactive efforts by the Indian High Commission in Colombo and the Consulate in Jaffna to expedite their release.

“The genesis of this issue dates back to 1974, stemming from an understanding between the Union Government and the State Government,” Jaishankar wrote in his response to Stalin. Since assuming office in 2014, Jaishankar noted, the NDA government has prioritized addressing the livelihood interests and humanitarian aspects affecting the fishing community. He reassured that these efforts encompass various dimensions, including engagement with the Sri Lankan government.

Stalin had previously written three letters to Jaishankar urging swift action for the release of fishermen apprehended by Sri Lanka, highlighting the disruptive impact on their livelihoods and the coastal communities’ anxieties.

“These incidents not only disrupt the livelihoods of the fishermen but also instill a sense of fear and uncertainty among their families and the entire coastal communities,” Stalin emphasized in his correspondence.

Jaishankar assured Stalin that the welfare and security of Indian fishermen remain paramount, reaffirming India’s commitment to resolving these issues through diplomatic channels.

The ongoing efforts underscore the complexities surrounding maritime disputes and bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka, with a focus on ensuring the well-being of affected communities.

Jaishankar is on an official visit to the UAE, where he is scheduled to meet his UAE counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The discussions between the two leaders are expected to cover a broad range of partnership issues. According to an official statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), “During the visit, EAM will have a meeting with his UAE counterpart on wide-ranging issues of the partnership.” The statement also noted, “This visit will provide an opportunity to review the entire spectrum of comprehensive strategic partnerships between India and UAE and regional and global developments.”

The BAPS temple, the first Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 14. This meeting aims to further strengthen cooperation and explore opportunities in critical and emerging technologies.

One of the key focuses of the meeting was to assess the progress of the ambitious iCET initiative. Additionally, discussions covered a wide range of topics, including ongoing defense cooperation. This includes a notable collaboration between US defense company GE Aerospace and India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to produce advanced F414 jet engines for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The US approved this collaboration last year, marking a significant step in bilateral defense ties. Furthermore, talks also touched upon the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic integration across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. However, because of recent events in West Asia, the IMEC project has been delayed. This project plans to build a large network of roads, railways, shipping routes, and important infrastructure such as power cables, pipelines for hydrogen gas, and fast data cables, which help the countries to grow economically and work together more closely.

People familiar with the matter described President Muizzu’s participation in the ceremony as significant, reflecting the Maldivian leadership’s intent to re-engage with India after a period of strained relations. Muizzu, elected last year following an “India Out” campaign, had called for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives shortly after taking office.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underscored India’s firm stance against cross-border terrorism, emphasizing that tolerance for such activities is minimal and carries consequences. Speaking at the CII Annual Business Summit 2024, Jaishankar reiterated India’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism, particularly from Pakistan.

Highlighting India’s decisive shift in 2014, Jaishankar stated that the nation no longer accepts terrorism as an inevitable part of its relationship with Pakistan. Referring to incidents like Uri and Balakot, he emphasized that any cross-border terrorism would be met with consequences, both along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB).

“I think the people of this nation made a very clear decision in 2014 that they are not going to accept it. In this country, I think the tolerance for any kind of cross-border terrorism activity is very low. There will be consequences, both across the LoC and across the IB, if something like this happens. That is the message of Uri and Balakot,” said S. Jaishankar

Jaishankar also urged Pakistan to abandon its support for terrorism if it wishes to be treated as a normal neighbor by India. He emphasized that India’s response to Pakistan’s actions depends on Islamabad’s willingness to dismantle the infrastructure supporting terrorism.

Regarding relations with China, Jaishankar described the situation as “more complex.” He outlined three main issues: border disturbances, trade imbalances, and national security concerns. While acknowledging business interactions with China, he emphasized the need for businesses to consider domestic sourcing and production in the long run. Additionally, he encouraged collaboration with Indian companies wherever possible, highlighting the importance of national security considerations in business decisions.

In summary, Jaishankar’s remarks underscored India’s unwavering stance against cross-border terrorism and the need for a pragmatic approach to relations with both Pakistan and China, balancing economic interests with national security concerns.

</excerpt>

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal embarked on a trip to Iran on Monday for the anticipated signing of the Chabahar port agreement. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed confidence that this agreement would lead to increased investments and enhance connectivity between India and Central Asia.

During a media interaction in Mumbai, Minister Jaishankar highlighted the significance of reaching a long-term agreement with Iran regarding the Chabahar port. He noted that previous arrangements had been ad hoc due to uncertainties about partnership structures in Iran. However, with a long-term deal, larger investments are expected to flow into the port, facilitating its growth and development.

Minister Jaishankar also mentioned the India-Middle-East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) agreement established during last year’s G20 summit. He emphasized that the Chabahar port’s strategic location would enhance connectivity through the International North-South Transport Corridor, linking India to Central Asia and beyond.

The Chabahar port agreement holds significant economic and strategic importance, creating a new trade route from South Asia to Central Asia via Iran. This route bypasses ports in Pakistan, offering alternative and efficient transit options for regional trade.

The agreement, once finalized, will enable India to lease the Chabahar port for an extended period, enhancing its maritime reach in the region. This move aligns with India’s broader connectivity initiatives, particularly the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), aimed at facilitating cargo movement between India, Iran, and Central Asia.

India’s focus on Chabahar reflects its commitment to strengthening regional connectivity and countering Chinese influence in the region. The Chabahar port, along with initiatives like the Sittwe port in Myanmar, underscores India’s growing maritime presence and economic aspirations in the Indo-Pacific region.

Dr. Jaishankar’s remarks highlighted arbitration as a cornerstone of modern dispute resolution, crucial for India’s economic growth trajectory and leveraging its demographic advantages.

Arbitration, as a modern and efficient dispute resolution mechanism, is recognized globally for its effectiveness in resolving commercial disputes. Dr. Jaishankar emphasized its significance in providing a stable and predictable legal framework that is essential for fostering investor confidence and promoting business growth in India.

“Arbitration is recognized as a cornerstone of modern dispute resolution and is key for India in its rapid economic progress and to make use of its demographic dividend,” stated Dr. Jaishankar, acknowledging the pivotal role arbitration plays in India’s economic landscape.

The Minister’s remarks highlight the strategic importance of arbitration not only in resolving disputes but also in creating an environment conducive to economic development.
In an exclusive interview with NewsX, Dr. Jaishankar underscored the contrast between Prime Minister Modi’s globally lauded foreign policy and Rahul Gandhi’s dissemination of falsehoods about India.

“Some people who consciously go abroad choose to criticise the country. In politics, I don’t have to praise you, but I don’t have to undermine the system either. I don’t have to claim that the country is collapsing,” Dr. Jaishankar remarked.

He criticized Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on minority rights in India, stating, “Rahul needs to explain why he makes certain statements. Perhaps he feels he lacks support at home and seeks validation elsewhere.”

Referring to Rahul’s visit to Cambridge University in March 2023, Dr. Jaishankar advised people to listen to the entire lecture, highlighting Rahul’s admiration for China and reluctance to criticize initiatives like the Belt-and-Road, which challenge Indian sovereignty.

In addition to critiquing the Congress leader, Dr. Jaishankar emphasized his own principles, expressing discomfort with the idea of conducting politics beyond the country’s borders.

</excerpt>

Dr. S. Jaishankar highlighted the noteworthy advancements India has achieved in the last ten years in the fight against terrorism. He emphasized that his party (BJP) is determined to fight against terrorism.

During an exclusive conversation with NewsX, Dr. Jaishankar asserted, “Unlike 26/11, we will not turn the other cheek. If anything happens in India, there will be consequences.”

The Modi government’s determination to fight terrorism is reflected in this firm position. Terrorist attacks have significantly decreased in India since Prime Minister Modi took office in 2014. Remarkably, large urban cities have remained unscathed by terror acts in the past decade.

India’s anti-terror efforts have evolved considerably from the days of merely presenting records to Pakistan following tragic events that claimed numerous innocent lives. The infamous 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks serve as a sensitive example, where despite India’s diplomatic efforts to extradite the mastermind Hafiz Saeed, little progress has been made. The perpetrators of this horrific attack continue to evade justice.

However, in contrast, after the devastating Uri and Pulwama attacks in 2016 and 2019, India responded decisively to the Pakistan-backed terrorists. Dr. Jaishankar highlighted the significance of India’s surgical strikes, stating, “I think that the message has gone through.”

In response to Canada’s unjustified involvement in the support of terrorists from Khalistani, Dr. Jaishankar remarked, “The Prime Minister of Canada has said things that were none of his business.”
