Jitesh Sharma Credits Dinesh Karthik’s Advice for Successful 228 Chase

May 28, 2025, 8:37 pm

Royal Challengers Bengaluru temporary captain Jitesh Sharma, unable to believe that he delivered a match-winning innings, shared the message of his “mentor and guru” Dinesh Karthik that enabled him to complete an unprecedented chase against Lucknow Super Giants in the last group game of the 18th edition of the IPL. In Bengaluru’s chase of a daunting 228-run total, RCB was reduced to threadbare 123/4 after the ‘Chase Master’ Virat Kohli fell in the 12th over. Jitesh Sharma stepped onto the field and formed partnership with Mayank Agarwal to formulate a plan for RCB’s successful loot in the history of the tournament.

Unbeaten 85 and Fortune Favour Jitesh Sharma in Historic Run Chase

With a rollicking batting performance, Jitesh Sharma left the audience mesmerized by his unbeaten 85 off just 33 deliveries at a strike rate of 257.58, his highest in the history of the cash-rich league. While constructing an unbeaten 107-run stand with Mayank, Jitesh suffered from cramps and vowed that they would take forward the momentum to the next match.

“I will not be able to express my thoughts! I can’t believe I played that knock. When Virat bhai was out, I was just thinking of taking it deep. As my mentor and guru Dinesh [Karthik] anna says, just take it deep,” Jitesh said in the post-match presentation.

Jitesh definitely did have luck on his side. In the 17th over, RCB nearly lost Jitesh Sharma twice. He drove the ball off the first ball into Badoni’s hands, but Digvesh had come over the return crease with his back foot, so it was a no-ball. On the next ball, he crunched the ball off to the stands to register his maiden IPL fifty.

The pivotal moment occurred on the final delivery of the over. Digvesh managed to beat Jitesh to the non-striker’s end. The bails dislodged before Jitesh’s bat had fully crossed the crease. However, he remained not out after Lucknow captain Rishabh Pant withdrew the appeal.

RCB’s Perfect Away Record Sets Up Strong Playoff Push

“I was getting cramps because all the load was on me, I have Virat bhai, Krunal bhai and Bhuvi bhai with me. I feel excited that I’m playing with them. We want to enjoy the moment. But we’ll try to recover well. We’ll look to carry the momentum into the next match,” he added.

RCB’s record-breaking chase maintained their flawless away record. This achievement has set them on course for a top-two finish, something they haven’t accomplished since 2016. In their seven away matches, Bengaluru has remained unbeaten, claiming victory in every single one. They are now the first team in the tournament’s history to achieve such a feat.

With the focus now shifting to their upcoming clash against Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 on Thursday, Jitesh confirmed that Josh Hazlewood is set to make his return to the playing XI after recovering from a shoulder injury.

“Credit goes to Rajat. I was responsible for maintaining his record. Hazlewood will perhaps play in the knockout. We have a strong belief system. We have match winners. Look at our playing XI, and we have match winners,” he concluded.

Dinesh Karthik Bids Adieu to Cricket in an Emotional Social Media Post

June 1, 2024, 10:51 pm

India’s cricketing stalwart and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) standout, Dinesh Karthik, declared his retirement from all forms of representative cricket on June 1, ending a decorated career. The decision, made public on his 39th birthday, followed careful consideration. Karthik had maintained silence after an emotional send-off from RCB’s final IPL 2024 game on May 22, which ended in defeat to Rajasthan in the Eliminator at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support, Karthik formally announced his retirement, readying himself for new challenges ahead. Mirroring MS Dhoni’s style, he shared a collage of career highlights alongside his retirement announcement. Karthik’s international journey spanned 19 years, encompassing 26 Tests, 94 ODIs, and 60 T20Is for India between 2004 and 2022. Despite debuting before Dhoni, Karthik’s international career faced interruptions due to the latter’s consistent performance.

Acknowledging the role of coaches, teammates, and family, Karthik expressed profound gratitude to the cricketing fraternity and fans. His resilience and determination are evident in his intermittent comebacks to the national side. Transitioning smoothly into commentary, Karthik established himself as a respected voice in cricket broadcasting. His numbers in international cricket, especially his comeback after the 2019 World Cup disappointment, underscore his tenacity and skill.

Karthik capped off his IPL journey with RCB with a stellar performance, amassing 3256 runs in 15 matches at an impressive strike rate. Despite hints of prolonging his T20 career, Karthik opted to bid adieu, concluding a memorable IPL stint comprising 4842 runs in 257 matches. His domestic contributions, especially to Tamil Nadu cricket, are significant, marked by leadership roles and match-winning performances. As he steps away from active cricket, Karthik’s mentoring role promises to continue shaping budding talents in Tamil Nadu cricket.

India’s Coach Quest: Gambhir A Fair Character And Winning Fire

May 31, 2024, 5:36 pm

Despite widespread reports confirming Gautam Gambhir as the prospective new coach for India, an official announcement regarding his appointment, replacing Rahul Dravid, may still be a few days away. Nevertheless, experts are confident that Gambhir’s character and determination make him the ideal candidate to lead the Indian team to greater success.

“What a record he has had as a coach!” said the former wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, who announced his retirement after IPL 2024, on Cricbuzz. “Being a mentor for LSG, two years on the bounce qualifying (for playoffs), comes to KKR and they say, ‘Please, you got to do something special for us’. Ends up winning the trophy.”

He added, “He has been at the helm, taken all the decisions (for KKR), be it sending (Sunil) Narine opening or getting Mitchell Starc in the auction in all of those big recruits and getting the right team, the right balance, and then taking all the shots.”

Gambhir said “I am seeing in the news that he could be part of the Indian team (chief coach) as well, and I really wish he does. He has that fire in him.”

Former New Zealand pace Simon Doul was also part of the discussion on Cricbuzz, and fully agreed with Karthik’s opinion. “Those (Gambhir) are the kind of people you want at the helm, highly respected, tough. He is a tough character, but I think he is very fair character and I think he’ll do a great job if he were to take over, if he were to accept the role.”

It was essentially Gambhir’s third IPL title with KKR. As the captain of KKR, Gambhir led the team to victory in the 2012 and 2014 IPL titles. His track record as a player and mentor demonstrates his understanding of what it takes to win major tournaments.

In addition to the three IPL titles with KKR, Gambhir was part of the Indian team under MS Dhoni that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup.

The tenure of current India coach, Rahul Dravid, will end after the T20 World Cup in June.

“Outstanding Talent, Brilliant Batter To Watch”: Virat Kohli On Dinesh Karthik

May 24, 2024, 1:29 pm

Virat Kohli showered praise on wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik and said that the 38-year-old has an ‘outstanding talent’ and is a ‘brilliant batter’ to watch.
Karthik had his last dance on a cricket field in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 eliminator match between RCB and Rajasthan Royals (RR).

In a video shared on RCB’s official social media handle, Kohli revealed that he found the wicketkeeper-batter very amusing after the batter met him for the first time during the Champions Trophy 2009.
“The first time I met DK, I remember we were playing in South Africa if I am not wrong in the Champions Trophy 2009. It was the first time I shared the change room with Dinesh and I found him to be very amusing, I would say hyperactive, confused person, most of the time he was moving all over the place, never stopping. That was my first impression of Dinesh,” Kohli said.

DK, We love you! ❤

Not often do you find a cricketer who’s loved by everyone around him. DK is one, because he was smart, humble, honest, and gentle! Celebrating @DineshKarthik‘s career with stories from his best friends and family! ?#PlayBold #ನಮ್ಮRCB #WeLoveYouDK pic.twitter.com/fW3bLGMQER

Kohli also revealed that Karthik helped him while the former RCB skipper was struggling for confidence.
“Off the field, I have had some really nice and interesting conversations with him. He is a wise man, and has great knowledge about a lot of things, not just cricket. I have thoroughly enjoyed my conversations with him. Even in that phase in 2022 when I did not have a great IPL season, I was really struggling for confidence, he sat me down a couple of times and gave me a very honest explanation of how he saw things and maybe I am not able to see them myself,” he added.

“MS Dhoni Will be Coming to USA but…”: Rohit Sharma Makes a Massive Announcement

April 18, 2024, 3:01 pm

Despite MS Dhoni’s official retirement from international cricket, his intermittent appearances in IPL 2024 have reignited speculation about a potential return to donning the Indian colors, particularly with the imminent 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, while acknowledging the allure of Dhoni’s presence in the squad, admits the challenge of persuading the cricketing legend to commit to the tournament in the West Indies, given Dhoni’s apparent weariness and newfound interest in golf. However, Sharma hints at Dhoni’s likely presence in the USA for other engagements, subtly suggesting the slim possibility of his involvement in cricket-related activities.

Sharma commends Dhoni’s recent brief but impactful cameo in an IPL match against Mumbai Indians, where his quickfire 20 runs off just four balls proved decisive in securing a victory for Chennai Super Kings. This demonstration of Dhoni’s enduring prowess further fuels the debate surrounding his potential return to the national team fold.

On the subject of Dinesh Karthik’s potential inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad, Sharma offers intriguing insights. Notably, Sharma recalls a recent exchange with Karthik during an IPL match, where the topic of the T20 World Cup spot was playfully teased.

Karthik’s subsequent explosive innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he blazed his way to 85 runs off a mere 35 deliveries, adds weight to Sharma’s contemplation. Sharma muses that it may prove comparatively easier to sway Karthik towards joining the T20 World Cup squad, hinting at the dynamic nature of team selection discussions and the evolving narratives within the cricketing fraternity.

RCB Skipper Faf du Plessis Heaps Praise On Virat Kohli After Win Against PBKS

March 26, 2024, 1:10 am

After Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) secured a victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match, RCB captain Faf Du Plessis praised Virat Kohli for his performance, emphasizing the importance of his innings on the challenging pitch. Du Plessis highlighted Kohli’s enduring passion for cricket and his vital contribution to the team’s success.

In the match, Kohli, known as the ‘Chasemaster,’ played a pivotal role, supported by Mahipal Lomror and Dinesh Karthik, who provided crucial finishes to secure RCB’s four-wicket win at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Du Plessis expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, particularly acknowledging Karthik’s contribution to the victory.

Despite PBKS’s decent batting performances from Shikhar Dhawan, Jitesh Sharma, and Sam Curran, they could only manage to score 176/6, with Mohammed Siraj and Glenn Maxwell taking two wickets each for RCB. In their chase, RCB faced wicket losses but were steadied by Kohli’s innings of 77 runs.

Dinesh Karthik and Mahipal Lomror’s impressive finishes ensured RCB’s victory with four wickets in hand and four balls remaining. Harpreet Brar and Kagiso Rabada stood out as PBKS’s top bowlers. Kohli was rightfully awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ title for his outstanding performance.

Situation surrounding Dinesh Karthik is only getting more tense and interesting

September 22, 2022, 1:01 pm

As the Indian cricket team is moving forward in their journey through the T20I World Cup, the situation around Dinesh Karthik is becoming more intense and interesting. It is clear that the team management has shaped Karthik to be India’s finisher for the T20 World Cup, but on occasions, the way it has treated him with regards to his role in the playing XI has been rather baffling. For example, during the first T20I between India and Australia in Mohali, Karthik was held back, and instead Axar Patel was made to bat ahead of him. With former cricketers raising questions over the move, the call to keep Karthik for the death overs and promote Axar ahead of him was met with plenty of flak.Matthew Hayden said, “I was just thinking about the role of Dinesh. This role Dinesh is playing now, for the life of me, I can’t work out why he wouldn’t be in their batting now. It doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever. I don’t want to give the impression that I’m disrespecting Dinesh Karthik, but he should be batting more; it’s actually the opposite.”Right after Hayden made the comment on live TV, Axar smashed a straight drive off Cameron Green. However, it was not enough to force Hayden to change his mind. The Aussie great stuck to his point of view and said that while Axar may have shown tremendous credentials with the bat lately, Karthik should get more ball time.He added, “I think he is such a good player that he can come in and play this exact same shot. I question the role that he is playing as a finisher. I think there is a role for him to come up with the order.”Agarkar said, “I find it very strange with regards to Dinesh Karthik. He is a good enough batter to come in now. Doesn’t have to after the 16th over. And, as much as Axar Patel has improved, you have high expectations for Karthik to handle this type of situation. At least you hope he does, considering he is playing ahead of Rishabh Pant as well in this XI. It happened in the South Africa series, and again today, Axar is batting ahead of him.”
