In a chat with BBC Asian Network, he recalled how the Met Gala organisers initially told him he couldn’t carry his kirpan, a ceremonial blade symbolic of the Sikh faith, as it was classified as a weapon.

“They told me that you hand it over to someone, you can’t take it on the red carpet as this is a weapon, so I said okay,” he explained. Diljit Dosanjh posed backstage with it for a few pictures, but once he got into the car, he decided he wouldn’t give it up unless asked.

“I will give it if someone asks for it,” he said, admitting he felt bad since it was part of his cultural look.

“Shakira was just ahead of me. Her dress had a lot of metal on it… I had a kirpan in my hand and I snuck in behind her. I had a cape on and the ‘kirpan’ was inside it. They checked her and didn’t check me,” he added.

Film Was Shot Before Tensions, Says Diljit

In an interview with BBC Asian Network, Diljit finally spoke about the situation. He revealed that the film was completed before the political climate worsened. “Jab yeh film bani thi tab situation sab theek tha. We shot this in Feb and then everything was fine,” he said. He further explained that escalating events afterward were beyond anyone’s control. “Bohut saari badi cheezein humare haath mein nahi hain,” he added.

Due to the circumstances, the producers have decided to skip the Indian release and focus on an overseas launch. “Toh producers ne decide kiya ki film obviously ab India mein toh nahi lagegi, toh overseas release karte hain,” Diljit shared. “Toh producers ka bohut paisa laga hua hain aur jab yeh film bann rahi thi tab aisa kuch tha nahi.”

Who Was Maharaja Bhupinder Singh?

Born in 1891 in the Phulkian dynasty, Bhupinder Singh became ruler of Patiala at nine years old with the death of his father, Maharaja Rajinder Singh.
