Paired with jalebi, this local dish is one of the must-try items on a traveller’s food itinerary. Dosanjh has managed to engage with his fans during the tour while finding time for local cultures. He is trying out local delicacies in every city. Dosanjh had Makhan Malai in Lucknow and dined at Bengaluru’s The Rameshwaram Cafe. While in Indore, he did not hesisitate t grab a plate of Indori Poha!

Dosanjh and his team were visiting a roadside stall when, one morning, the famous Indori Poha was had by him, sharing jokes with the vendor. As the day broke, fans gathered around and he was kind enough to pose in front of an ‘I Love Indore’ sign for photographs with them. It is one of the last stops of his 10-city tour. His next destination will be Chandigarh on the 14th and then Mumbai on the 19th.

The History of Indori Poha

Indori Poha, often served with warm jalebi, is a staple of Indore’s food culture today but was not always so. The dish originated in Maharashtra and gained popularity during the 19th century when the Holkars and Scindias moved to Indore. The Holkars were patrons of arts and cuisine and introduced poha as a quick, nutritious meal for workers and farmers.

As time passed, regional variations developed. While Maharashtra’s version often includes onions, potatoes, and curd, the Malwa-Nimar region of Madhya Pradesh, particularly Indore, started adding Indori Sev, crushed jalebi, or kachori for extra flavor. The poha is traditionally prepared from flattened rice and tempered using mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, green chilies, and onions. Garnished with pomegranate seeds, crunchy sev, roasted peanuts, and fresh coriander, it offers a sweet, spicy, tangy, and savory combination.

What makes Indori Poha stand out the most is the signature Jeeravan Masala, a spice mix that provides a tangy flavor. It is actually the composition of spices that gives it a flavor that no other poha variety has – cumin, coriander, fennel, black pepper, dry ginger, and amchur powder.

Now, not everyone can just fly down to Indore to enjoy this special dish but what we can do is try to make it at home! Here’s how:

Indori Poha Recipe

For the Tadka

1 ½ tbsp Oil
½ tsp Mustard seeds
½ tsp Cumin seeds
½ tsp Fennel seeds
2 Green chilies, chopped
2 sprigs Curry leaves
¼ tsp Turmeric powder
A pinch of Asafoetida

For the Poha:

3 cups Thick poha
Water for rinsing
Prepared Tadka
½ tbsp Sugar
Salt to taste
2 tbsp Milk

For Jeeravan Masala:

1 tbsp Fennel seeds
3 tsp Cumin seeds
1 tbsp Coriander seeds
1 tbsp Black peppercorns
6-7 Cloves
1 Mace
¼ inch Cinnamon stick
6-7 Bay leaves
10-12 Green cardamom
3-4 Dry Kashmiri red chilies
¼ Nutmeg
Salt to taste
2 tsp Pink salt
2 tsp Ginger powder
A pinch of Turmeric powder

Salt to taste

For Garnish:

Masala Peanuts
Green chilies, slit
Ratlami sev

Lemon wedges
Jalebi

Preparing Poha:

Step 1: Wash 3 cups of thick poha in water, strain and keep aside.
Step 2: Heat 1 ½ tbsp oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, and let them splutter.
Step 3: Add chopped green chilies and curry leaves, sauté briefly, then turn off the heat.
Step 4: Add turmeric powder and asafoetida. Pour the tadka over soaked poha. Add sugar and salt, then mix well.
Step 5: Add 2 tbsp milk, mix well, and keep aside

Steaming Poha: Heat water in a kadai, place a plate above it, and add poha along with slit green chilies. Cover and steam for 15-20 minutes.

Make Jeeravan Masala: Dry roast fennel seeds, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, black peppercorns, cloves, mace, cinnamon, bay leaves, green cardamom, Kashmiri red chilies, and nutmeg on low heat. Add pink salt, ginger powder, turmeric, and asafoetida, then roast briefly and cool. Grind into a fine powder and set aside.

Roast Peanuts: Heat 2-3 tsp oil and roast peanuts for 2-3 minutes until golden. Drain excess oil, toss with chili powder and salt.

Serving: Transfer steamed poha to a serving dish. Garnish with masala peanuts, green chilies, Ratlami sev, masala boondi, nylon sev, pomegranate pearls, Jeeravan Masala, and coriander leaves. Serve it hot with a wedge of lemon and jalebi to truly have an Indori taste.

Diljit Dosanjh Thrills 35,000 Fans In Delhi, But World Concert Records Remain Distant

October 27, 2024, 2:53 pm

Diljit Dosanjh made a triumphant return to India on Saturday, performing in Delhi as part of his highly anticipated Dil-Luminati Tour. The concert, held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, attracted an impressive 35,000 enthusiastic fans, marking it as one of the largest concerts in Indian history. However, in comparison to some of the biggest concerts globally, Diljit’s event appears modest.

The title for the largest concert in history goes to a New Year’s Eve celebration at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro in December 1994. This monumental event saw an astounding attendance of 3.5 million people as Rod Stewart took to the stage. The allure of free entry, along with the vibrant carnival-like atmosphere and unrestricted food and drink options, drew huge crowds to the beach. Notably, this attendance exceeded the population of several nearby cities.

Three years later, in 1997, French musician Jean-Michel Jarre matched this record with his performance at the Oxygene concert in Moscow, which also saw an attendance of 3.5 million, making these two events a staggering hundred times larger than Dosanjh’s Delhi concert.

When it comes to ticketed events, attendance figures are typically lower. The largest ticketed concert record is held by Italian artist Vasco Rossi, who performed in Modena Park in 2017, drawing a crowd of 225,000 fans. In India, the largest ticketed concerts were by Justin Bieber in Mumbai in 2021 and Diljit Dosanjh in 2023, both of which attracted 50,000 attendees.

While Diljit’s concert in Delhi is certainly a monumental achievement within the Indian music scene, it serves as a reminder of the immense scale of global concerts, where attendance figures can reach astonishing heights.

This emotional moment resonated with his Indian fans as he declared, “Ye mera desh, mera ghar hai (This is my country, this is my home)!” His opening act set the tone for an unforgettable night.

Power-Packed Performance Amid Delayed Start

Although fans eagerly gathered hours before the concert, the performance began later than scheduled, sparking some frustration due to the humid conditions inside the venue. But their anticipation turned to excitement once the lights dimmed around 8 PM, marking Diljit’s vibrant entry. With signature hits like Born to Shine, GOAT, Lemonade, 5 Taara, and Do You Know, Diljit delivered an exhilarating show that left fans mesmerized.

Fan Reactions: Social Media Abuzz

Attendees quickly took to social media, sharing moments from the concert with captions expressing their excitement. The buzz was evident as fans flooded their feeds with videos and selfies from the event, thrilled to finally see the artist perform live in India after his international tour. Dancer Withdraws from Diljit Dosanjh’s Europe Tour Citing Unprofessional Management

October 9, 2024, 3:18 pm

A few months after multiple dancers accused Diljit Dosanjh’s management of unpaid dues from his North American tour, dancer Shilpa Sajan has stepped away from the Europe leg of his ongoing Dil-Luminati Tour due to similar concerns.

Shilpa Sajan’s Statement

Shilpa shared a lengthy post on her Instagram, expressing her disappointment. Captioning her note, she wrote, “An opportunity I was super excited about, but the dance industry has shown its true colours once again. Riddled with unprofessionalism, egos, total disrespect for dancers and being told ‘that’s just how Indians work.’ No celebrity is worth giving up your self-respect @diljitdosanjh.”

She explained how she was aware of the payment controversies from Diljit’s North America tour when she was offered the role of a backup dancer for the Europe tour. Despite being assured that this was a paid opportunity, she soon discovered the £80 wage was insufficient to cover her expenses, especially as she had to manage her own accommodation and international travel.

“I have never worked with such an unprofessional and disrespectful management team in my life. Everything was a mess,” Shilpa wrote. She further detailed how communication with the management was poor, with messages being ignored, dancers being cut at the last minute, and a lack of rehearsals that compromised the performances. According to Shilpa, these issues reflect a larger problem in the dance industry where dancers are treated as “objects.”

Online Support for Shilpa

Shilpa’s post received widespread support on Instagram. One user commented, “Thank you for valuing yourself & your skill above these 5 mins of clout!” Another highlighted the exploitation of artists, saying, “Exploiting artists in the name of exposure has been happening for far too long. And especially with Diljit, who mentions in all his interviews that all his earnings go in his shows—yet, why aren’t people getting their fair share?”

Other comments praised Shilpa for her courage, with one reading, “Proud of you for standing up for yourself as hard as it may be,” and another remarking, “This is incredibly frustrating and disappointing. I almost ended up doing the tour myself and know several girls who went through it—stories of 2am rehearsals, misinformation, and being messed around by management were all too common.”

One user added, “After all the backlash earlier this year, you think they would’ve sorted themselves out, but evidently not.”

Diljit Dosanjh’s Upcoming India Tour

Despite the ongoing controversy, Diljit Dosanjh is set to begin the India leg of the Dil-Luminati Tour starting October 26 in New Delhi. The tour will conclude with a final show in Guwahati on December 29, with sold-out performances expected throughout.

Social Media Buzz: ₹41,265 on Concert Tickets

Amid the ticket-buying frenzy, social media was abuzz with conversations about the staggering prices some fans were willing to pay. One particular post by X user Kanishk Khurana caught the internet’s attention when he claimed to know someone who spent ₹41,265 on tickets for the concert. Khurana’s comment, urging people to make “better financial decisions,” sparked a heated debate.

Fans Divided Over Spending

While some social media users agreed with Khurana, arguing that such high amounts could be better spent elsewhere, others defended the splurge, saying that money spent on experiences that bring joy is justified.

X user Siddharth Sharma weighed in, stating, “It took me a long time to realise that just saving & investing is not going to make me happy. Learn to spend it on what gives you happiness. For some, a WC T20 match is valuable; for someone else, a Sonu Nigam concert is. Be prudent, not a miser.”

Another user, Vaibhav, echoed a similar sentiment, adding, “If someone has the means and capability to buy the tickets, let them!” However, some remained critical of the steep prices, like Amar, who shared, “I don’t really get concerts. I was born and raised in a lower-middle-class family. I can never buy such expensive tickets.”

Looking Ahead to the Tour

Despite the debates, the excitement for Diljit Dosanjh’s Dil-Luminati Tour continues to grow. With performances in 10 cities across India, fans are eagerly awaiting the experience of seeing one of Punjab’s most celebrated artists live. In a note, he praised Diljit’s success but criticized the fact that dancers were expected to perform without pay. “While we as a Desi Dance Community are really proud of a Desi Artist breaking glass ceilings and doing sold out tours across North America… I still feel deeply disappointed that Desi Dancers are still undervalued as an industry. All of the Desi Dancers in Diljit’s Dil-Luminati Tour were not paid, and just expected to perform for free…Desi Dance as an industry has become a lifeblood for artists and do a significant part in the entire ecosystem of the industry… while its choreography, stage performances, music videos, reels, to even promoting songs… It’s an essential part of production and it’s really disappointing to see an artist of this caliber cut corners by stepping on throats of Desi Dancer industry and continue to attribute to that culture.”
