</excerpt>

Vietnam’s long-serving leader, Nguyen Phu Trong, has passed away “after a period of illness,” marking the end of a significant political era. The announcement came days after the government indicated he was stepping back to focus on his health, having handed his duties to President To Lam.

Mr. Trong, who was the general secretary of Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party since 2011 and briefly served as president, was considered one of the most powerful leaders in decades. He oversaw the robust growth of Vietnam’s economy and was known for his “blazing furnaces” anti-corruption campaign.

His death comes at a turbulent time for Vietnam’s Communist leadership, with three top leaders recently resigning amid unspecified accusations of wrongdoing. According to an official statement released on Friday, Mr. Trong died “due to old age and serious illness.”

Just a day before, the Vietnamese government had surprisingly announced that Mr. Trong needed time to focus on treatment for an unspecified medical condition, adding that President To Lam would take over his duties in running the party’s central committee, politburo, and secretariat. The government also awarded Mr. Trong the Gold Star, Vietnam’s highest honor, for his contributions to the party and country.

Seen as recently as late June welcoming Russian President Vladimir Putin on a state visit, Mr. Trong had missed several events in recent months, including the launch of a book compiling his speeches. His health had been a subject of intense speculation, with the state maintaining discretion over the health of party leaders to portray Vietnam as a stable nation under single-party rule.

Mr. Trong’s tenure saw Vietnam’s GDP per capita more than double, and the country inked several free trade agreements with the West and Asian neighbors. He was known for engaging with international leaders, including those from the US, Russia, and China, while maintaining a strong commitment to socialist ideals.

His anti-corruption campaign led to nearly 200,000 officials facing disciplinary action or criminal charges, although it did not completely eradicate corruption. Recent scandals, including a $44 billion fraud case, highlight ongoing issues. The anti-corruption drive has also contributed to instability within the Communist Party, with numerous top officials purged, leaving few potential successors, particularly in the politburo.

Mr. Trong’s death poses significant questions about succession and the future political direction of Vietnam. With the old guard fading, the country faces uncertainty and anxiety about what lies ahead.

Gajinder Singh Khalsa, the founder and patron of Dal Khalsa, reportedly passed away from a heart attack at a hospital in Pakistan on Thursday at the age of 74. Dal Khalsa has yet to officially confirm his death. He is survived by his daughter.

Gajinder Singh was one of five members of the previously banned organization, Dal Khalsa, who hijacked Indian Airlines flight IC-423 on September 29, 1981. The flight, which had taken off from Delhi’s Palam airport for Srinagar, carried 111 passengers and 6 crew members. The hijackers forced the plane to land in Lahore, demanding the release of several Khalistani extremists, including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

The hijackers were arrested and served a life sentence from September 30, 1981, to October 31, 1994, in Pakistan. Following the hijacking incident, the Indian government banned Dal Khalsa in 1982, allowing it to resume overground activities a decade later. In January 2002, the Indian government listed Gajinder Singh Khalsa among the 20 “most wanted” and sought his extradition from Pakistan. After their release in 1994, two of the hijackers returned to India, while the remaining three stayed in Pakistan.

In 2020, the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, decided to honor Gajinder Singh Khalsa with the title of ‘Sikh Warrior in Exile.’

Reacting to the announcement, Dal Khalsa spokesman Kanwar Pal Singh criticized the Indian government’s view of Gajinder Singh. “The decision of the government to label him as a ‘terrorist’ is unjustified. He is not a killer or a criminal. He is a man of politics. He wanted to change the system. He has never shown any prejudice or discrimination towards any religion or culture. He struggled for Sikh rights but never took up arms to accomplish the mission. The charges of sedition against him don’t fall under the definition of terrorism. Sedition is not a terrorist act. He has already spent 13 years and four months in Lahore jail for his act,” he said.

Kanwar Pal further explained that while Dal Khalsa activists did hijack the aircraft to Lahore, none of them carried firearms or harmed any passengers. He mentioned that Gajinder Singh went to Germany in July 1996 but was deported to Pakistan due to pressure from India. “A petition was filed by our party activists in the administrative court of Germany protesting the deportation of Gajinder Singh back to Pakistan. Since then, he is in exile,” he added.

In addition to Gajinder Singh, the other hijackers included Tajinderpal Singh, Satnam Singh, Jasbir Singh Cheema, and Karan Singh. Tajinderpal returned to India in December 1997, and Satnam in 1999. A Delhi court in August 2018 acquitted Tajinderpal and Satnam of charges of waging war against the country, granting them “benefit of doubt” as the prosecution failed to prove the charges beyond “reasonable doubt.

Dr. Jamshed J. Irani, frequently known as the Steel Man of India, died on Monday late night in Jamshedpur at the age of 86.

We are deeply saddened at the demise of Padma Bhushan Dr. Jamshed J Irani, fondly known as the Steel Man of India. Tata Steel family offers its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones”, Tata Steel tweeted on its official handle.

On June 2, 1936, Dr. Jamshed J. Irani was born in Nagpur. He graduated with a BSc in Science from the city’s Science College in 1956, and two years later, in 1958, he earned an MSc in Geology from Nagpur University.

Later, as a JN Tata scholar, Irani travelled to the University of Sheffield in the UK where he earned a master’s in metallurgy in 1960 and a PhD in 1963.

In 1962, Dr. Irani started working for the British Iron and Steel Research Association. In 1968, he went to India and began working for the Tata Iron and Steel Company (now known as Tata Steel) as the director-in-charge of research and development’s assistant.

Dr. Irani rose through the ranks to become Tata Steel’s president in 1985, general manager in 1979, and general superintendent in 1978. Before retiring in 2001, he later rose through the ranks to joint managing director in 1988 and managing director in 1992.
