Sheikh Hasina’s final hours in Dhaka were characterized by defiance, chaos, and eventually escape. On August 5, 2024, when violent student-led mobs rocked Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina refused to step down. “Shoot me, bury me here, in Ganabhaban,” she said to army officials. She escaped to India a few hours later, before a crowd assaulted her official residence.

This turn of events was traced out by Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam at a recent hearing at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The tribunal also considered charges of crimes against humanity during the violence at Chankharpul, Dhaka.

The disturbance broke out over a disputed quota system in government employment. Student demonstrations broke out and spread rapidly. The nation was in chaos by early August. Demonstrators’ confrontations with security forces escalated into violence. More than 500 people were killed, according to reports, before Hasina could escape.

Sheikh Hasina’s Last Stand

Within Ganabhaban, there was tension. On August 4 night, there was a fateful meeting. Senior Cabinet ministers, military personnel, and security chiefs met. Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Islam says, initiated the first official call for Sheikh Hasina to quit. However, senior Awami League leaders resisted.

Major General (Retd) Tariq Ahmed Siddiq, her defence adviser and cousin, was calling on her to quit. She would not do so. She instructed the army chief to be firm and quash the protests. Her resistance contrasted sharply with the carnage on the streets.

Final Moments Before Escape

Sheikh Hasina’s determination shook the room. “Shoot me, bury me here,” she declared, making her refusal clear and loud. Hours later, she slipped quietly out of the country. She went to India, abandoning her official home behind. Angry mobs soon stormed and destroyed Ganabhaban.

Chief Prosecutor Islam revealed this timeline in a hearing before the ICT. He also laid charges on atrocities committed in Chankharpul, infusing an additional dose of jurisprudence into the political melodrama. His testimony, as reported by Prothom Alo, has left onlookers aghast and raised new questions about accountability.

The tribunal goes on. Bangladesh struggles with the long-term legacy of one of its most frenzied transitions on record.

They vandalized property, torched the building, and chanted against Sheikh Hasina, who fled Bangladesh amid last year’s anti-government protests.
</excerpt>

A violent mob vandalized and set fire to the residence of Bangladesh’s founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi 32 area on Wednesday.

According to The Dhaka Tribune, the attack occurred just one day after Hasina gave an online speech appealing to Awami League supporters to demonstrate against the interim government formed by Muhammad Yunus. Protesters came in bulldozers threatening to bulldoze the house, but actually smashed the gate of the residence and ransacked the building and set part of it on fire.

Protesters called the house a “symbol of authoritarianism and fascism,” promising to remove every trace of what they called “Mujibism” from the country. Several people broke into the second floor, wielding hammers, crowbars, and wooden planks to smash portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other historical artifacts.

Chanting slogans demanding the execution of Sheikh Hasina, the violence from the mob demonstrated the strong political tension in Bangladesh. Hasina fled to India on August 5 last year after massive protests against the government resulted in her overthrow after a 15-year rule.

Hours before an expected protest by Awami League members, the government detained several from the party. The party had planned to choke Dhaka city by bringing its transport networks to a standstill nationwide on Thursday, including main highways.

Bangladesh’s first president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and a liberating icon at the same time is still debated. He was closely associated with Hasina. His house was damaged last year in a student uprising, bringing his rule to an end. Now it is again at the center of Bangladesh’s political storm.

</excerpt>

India and Bangladesh are set to engage in foreign secretary-level discussions in December in Dhaka, as confirmed by Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will meet his Bangladeshi counterpart, Jashim Uddin, under the India-Bangladesh Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) framework, according to a report by the state-run Bangladesh Sanghbad Sangstha (BSS).

The talks are viewed as a significant step toward normalizing relations between the two neighboring nations. Bangladesh is expected to raise the contentious issue of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s extradition during the discussions. Hasan noted that bilateral topics, including Hasina’s extradition, are likely to be on the agenda, as reported by The Times of India.

Relations between India and Bangladesh have been under strain since August, following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule through a prolonged protest movement. The demonstrations, driven by Islamist and pro-Pakistan factions, led to the establishment of an interim government under Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus, with backing from the military. Hasina fled to India for safety and has been residing there since her removal.

The political shift in Bangladesh has sparked widespread violence, particularly against Hindus, other minority groups, and political opponents. Reports suggest that the Yunus administration has downplayed the severity of the unrest while releasing Islamist leaders, including Jashimuddin Rahmani Hafi of Ansarullah Bangla Team, an al-Qaeda affiliate. These developments have further strained ties between the two countries.

The Yunus regime has persistently urged India to extradite Hasina, citing legal cases filed against her and her supporters. The upcoming talks are expected to address this contentious issue while exploring avenues to rebuild trust and cooperation.

</excerpt>

We have watched the second victory of Donald Trump as president of United States. His approach of “America First “ has given him a victory in election that “ I Shall return “.
The return of Trump is obviously not a surprise to many and has a specific geopolitical implications. Bangladesh is going through lots of challenges and opportunities right at this moment and change in the US administration will definitely have effective influence in Bangladesh too. Here is a summary on crosscutting issues, effecting US-BD relations from Bangladesh perspective .
An estimated number of 200 thousand Bangladeshi origin people live in the US, Besides these legal number there are unconfirmed Bangladeshis are residing in the US, they might have been moved throw human trafficking, or may have misused tourist or business visa. Democrats party is favorable to illegal migrants but Republics are not. So Bangladeshis who are not properly documented in the US, their “American Dream” could be at risk.
The USA is consistently funding in Bangladesh for good reasons. Recently Biden administration has authorized USAID to donate two billion USD to improve living standards of Bangladesh within year 2021-2026 under Development Objective Grant Agreement.
With the change of US administration there is a risk that funds pouring into Bangladesh ranging from public health to Rohingya refugees could be reduced which will directly impact Bangladesh.
The US currently contributes around 22% of the general UN budget and about 28% to peacekeeping operations. The UN officials already has expressed their anxiety that trump could drastically cut funding to the UN. If so,this will affect Bangladesh, Bangladesh is the top troops contributing country in the UNPKO.
US-BD bilateral trade is 12 billion USD. US is the largest buyer of RMG that made in Bangladesh. “Trump Return” It is likely to bring good news for Bangladeshi Businesses . During Trump presidency 2017-2021 Bangladeshi RMG export to the US raised from 17 to 18.9 percent according to BGMEA report.
There is a news on air that Trump may adopt more anti-China trade measures. If Trump impose more trade embargo and higher tariffs on China, Bangladesh will get indirect intensive.
The world has appreciated Trump for his role in repatriation of US soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan .There is a saying that “Tump 2.0” administration may not be looking for enemy in foreign lands, so Bangladesh will have less pressure on security issue alliance like QUAD.
Human Rights and good Governance agenda may remain unchanged under new administration. Sanctions on Bangladesh RAB Force and individuals may retain in coming days too.
Earlier Trump has called climate change a “hoax and Scam” , so it is likely that US contribution on climate change initiative going to be narrowing under Trump administration. Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change. Bangladesh is in need of natural resources protection,early warnings, cyclone shelter, technical assistance etc.
So Bangladesh will be raising eye brows if the US fund curtails.
Biden administration and Bangladesh Interim Govt is maintaining excellent bilateral relations at present. Chief advisor’s office press wing has issued circular stating that US election result will not change the approach of both the governments.
But there is a widespread perception that Yunus administration may not share the same rapport with Trump as they had with Biden administration. As a result General election in Bangladesh may held earlier than anticipated. In his resent tweet Trump has openly criticized and condemned the torture on Hindu community in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is in a cross road of political junction and this change in US administration is definitely a signal to be navigated carefully. Trump office will have dynamic aftermath in geopolitical landscape for sure. Bangladesh is committed to restoring democracy and upholding human rights. Bangladesh urge all her friends including the US to extend their full support.

The writer , Squadron Leader (Rtd) Sadrul Ahmed Khan, is Former Deputy Serjeant-At-Arms, Bangladesh Parliament.

</excerpt>

In a disturbing escalation of political tensions, the central office of the Jatiya Party, a prominent ally of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was attacked and set ablaze on Thursday night in Dhaka. The incident, which took place at the party’s headquarters in Bijoy Nagar, comes as the country grapples with political turmoil and heightened security concerns ahead of upcoming elections.

Attack on Jatiya Party Headquarters

Eyewitnesses reported that a group of attackers stormed the building, engaging in clashes with Jatiya Party members before setting parts of the premises on fire. Although no casualties were immediately reported, extensive property damage is feared. Firefighters, led by Rashed bin Khaled from the Fire Service and Civil Defense, responded promptly to contain the blaze, but details on the extent of the damage remain unclear.

No Claim of Responsibility; Tensions Rise

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the event has sparked allegations and condemnation on social media. Hasnat Abdullah, a leader from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which has been at the forefront of protests leading to Hasina’s ouster, took to social media to denounce the Jatiya Party. Calling it a “national betrayer” for its support of Hasina’s government, Abdullah urged students to march on the party’s Dhaka headquarters.

Jatiya Party Blames Student Protesters

Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Secretary General of the Jatiya Party, has accused student groups of orchestrating the attack. “People are watching what they are doing with us,” he said, highlighting the incident’s coverage on social media. Chunnu’s remarks come amid rising fears that political violence could spiral further as the elections approach.

Background: Ouster of Sheikh Hasina and Escalating Violence

Sheikh Hasina, who led the Awami League government for 15 years, fled to India in August following mass protests led by students. Hundreds were reportedly killed in clashes between students, government forces, and Hasina’s supporters. In her absence, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was appointed head of an interim government, backed by student leaders and military support, although his administration faces significant challenges in restoring stability.

A Nation at Crossroads

Bangladesh remains on edge as supporters of the ousted regime and proponents of the new administration continue to clash. The recent attack on the Jatiya Party’s headquarters marks another flashpoint, highlighting the country’s deep-seated divisions and the struggle for control in the post-Hasina political landscape.

</excerpt>

Violent clashes erupted between students and Ansar members near the Secretariat in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Sunday night, resulting in injuries on both sides, according to the Dhaka Tribune. The unrest began after 9 pm, with both groups engaging in a series of chases before police intervened to restore order.

The confrontation started when students from Dhaka University’s dormitories assembled at the Raju Memorial Sculpture and marched towards the Secretariat to challenge Ansar members, whom they labeled as “agents of autocracy.”

The tension escalated after reports emerged that Ansar members were detaining Nahid Islam, an adviser in the interim government and coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination movement, along with Sarjis Alam, Hasnat Abdullah, and others, at the Secretariat.

Student Protest Coordinator Hasnat Abdullah posted on Facebook, blaming former Ansar director general Maj Gen AKM Aminul Haque for maintaining the blockade of the Secretariat even after the protesters’ demands were addressed. Abdullah called for more supporters to gather at the Raju Memorial Sculpture, stating, “Everyone, come to Raju. The autocratic forces are trying to make a comeback through the Ansar force. Even after their demands were met, we were kept locked in the Secretariat.”

Earlier in the day, Ansar members had ended their protest following assurances from Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the interim government’s adviser for home affairs. The Ansar members had been protesting for two days, seeking the nationalization of their jobs.

The protest is part of ongoing unrest following recent anti-Hindu violence.
</excerpt>

On Tuesday, members of Bangladesh’s Hindu community staged a protest in Dhaka amid escalating unrest. The demonstrations come in the wake of anti-Hindu violence that has plagued the country since last week’s political upheaval. The unrest began after the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the collapse of her Awami League government, following a month-long student-led uprising.

Scuffle with the Bangladesh Army

The protest took place outside Dhaka’s Jamuna State Guest House, where Nobel laureate Muhammed Yunus, the leader of the interim government, is currently staying. A brief scuffle erupted between the demonstrators, who were holding posters of missing family members, and Bangladesh Army soldiers stationed to guard the guest house.

Yunus’s Visit and Remarks

Earlier in the day, Yunus visited the historic Dhakeshwari Temple in Dhaka. During his visit, Yunus assured the Hindu community of their safety and urged unity among all citizens. He emphasized that rights should be equal for everyone and cautioned against sectarian divisions.

“Rights are equal for everyone. We are all one people with the same rights. Please assist us and exercise patience,” Yunus stated, according to The Daily Star. He further remarked that the root of current issues lies in the decay of institutional arrangements and stressed the need for reforms.

Impact and International Reaction

Hindus constitute around 8% of Bangladesh’s population, making them the largest minority group in the country. The recent anti-Hindu violence has sparked condemnation from India and some Indian-origin lawmakers in the US, drawing international attention to the situation.

Conclusion

The scuffle in Dhaka highlights the heightened tensions and ongoing unrest in Bangladesh. As the interim government navigates these challenges, the situation remains fluid, with calls for both national and international support to address the violence and political instability.

</excerpt>

Hundreds of Bangladeshi Hindus took to the streets of Dhaka on Friday, protesting against a series of targeted attacks on minority communities following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government earlier this week. The demonstrations, marked by posters pleading for protection and chants of “Who are we? Bengali, Bengali,” highlighted the growing fears among the Hindu minority, who make up about 8% of Bangladesh’s 170 million population.

Since the departure of long-time Awami League leader Hasina, who resigned and fled to India on Monday, Hindu temples, homes, and businesses have been subjected to vandalism, and several Hindu leaders associated with the party have been killed. The Awami League, in a social media post, stated, “#Bangladesh #Hindus have taken to the streets in #Shahbagh #Dhaka to protest the attacks on their person, properties, and places of worship since Aug 5.”

The protests erupted just a day after Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of an interim government in Bangladesh, following Hasina’s resignation amidst widespread unrest over a controversial job quota system. Yunus, 84, took the oath of office at a ceremony in the presidential palace, Bangabhaban, on Thursday.

Bangladeshi students had just human rights concerns against PM Hasina. It’s good she is gone. But the violence now targeting Hindus is wrong. PM Yunus must uphold the rule of law & prevent the targeting of temples or people of any political party or faith from violence.

— Ro Khanna (@RoKhanna) August 8, 2024

In response to the escalating violence, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes to Yunus and expressed hope for a swift return to normalcy, emphasizing the need for the protection of Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh. Modi posted on X, “My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities. India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security, and development.”

The United Nations also reacted to the situation, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressing his opposition to any racially based attacks or incitement to violence. Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated on Thursday, “What we’ve made clear is we want to make sure that the violence that has been occurring in Bangladesh in recent weeks is tamped down. Certainly, we stand against any racially based attacks or racially based incitement to violence.”

In the United States, two prominent Indian-American lawmakers have called for an immediate end to the ongoing violence against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh. They urged the interim government, under Prime Minister-designate Muhammad Yunus, to uphold the rule of law and protect vulnerable communities. These remarks followed a meeting between Hindu American groups and State Department officials, where concerns were raised about the spike in violence against Hindus and the destruction of Hindu temples in Bangladesh. The lawmakers also criticized the lack of acknowledgment and condemnation from Congress and the administration, calling it “unacceptable.”

</excerpt>

New Delhi: Over 7,200 Indian students have returned to India from Bangladesh in the past couple of weeks, ending on August 1, due to unrest in the neighboring country, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Government Efforts and Coordination

Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, revealed that about 19,000 Indian citizens, including over 9,000 students, reside in Bangladesh. He stated that the High Commission of India in Dhaka and the Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna are assisting with the voluntary return of Indian nationals. They are also coordinating with Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the safety and security of Indians during their stay and travel to airports and land ports along the India-Bangladesh border.

Return of Indian Nationals

The Ministry of External Affairs is working with Indian authorities to facilitate a smooth passage for returning citizens at land ports and airports. Singh confirmed that over 7,200 Indian students returned to India between July 18 and August 1, 2024.

Indian Community in Bangladesh

Indian students in Bangladesh come from various regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam. The government does not maintain a state-wise list of those who have voluntarily departed from Bangladesh.

Related Developments

Indian Students in Canada: Singh responded to a query about Indian student intake in Canadian universities, confirming an increase over the last three years, with figures reaching 427,085.

Chinese Influence: Singh stated that the government is vigilant about activities in neighboring countries affecting India’s interests. The “Neighbourhood First Policy” guides India’s approach to neighboring countries, emphasizing education, culture, trade, and investment.

Pilgrimage to Kartarpur: Over the past three years, 96,555 Indian pilgrims visited Gurudwara Shri Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan.

India’s Role in Israel-Palestine Conflict: India condemned terror attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, and provided humanitarian aid to Gaza, calling for a ceasefire and peaceful resolution through dialogue.

This coordinated effort highlights the government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad. The situation in Bangladesh continues to be monitored closely to ensure the security of remaining Indian nationals.

India’s NSA ensured their safe arrival and stay.
</excerpt>

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on Monday, August 5, amid escalating violence in her country. Forced to resign from her post, Hasina left in haste, carrying none of her clothes or daily essentials, according to reports from ANI.

Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and other associates arrived in India on a C-130 J transport aircraft from Dhaka. Their sudden departure was a desperate move to “save their lives,” leaving them with only the clothes they were wearing.

A Dramatic Escape

The Indian protocol officials, assigned to the entourage, assisted Hasina and her team in acquiring necessary items such as clothing and other essentials. The team, deeply affected by the turmoil and chaos they had witnessed in Bangladesh, arrived in a state of shock.

The entourage included dozens of associates from Bangladesh’s most prominent political family. Upon their arrival in India, Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met with Hasina and ensured their safety and security, relocating them to safe houses in Delhi.

Circumstances Leading to the Escape

Sheikh Hasina and her group fled Dhaka just as protesters stormed her official residence, ransacking buildings and monuments associated with her Awami League party. In the aftermath of her resignation, Bangladesh’s army chief announced the formation of an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who is set to take oath on Thursday.

Awaiting Political Asylum

Hasina is expected to stay in New Delhi temporarily as she considers seeking political asylum. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, indicated that Hasina has yet to decide between seeking asylum in the United States or the United Kingdom.

Joy emphasized that Hasina’s departure was not her choice but rather a decision driven by concerns for her safety. “I was worried not because she was leaving Bangladesh, but because she didn’t want to leave Bangladesh. We had to convince her. I said this is not a political movement anymore, this is a mob … they are going to kill you,” Joy explained.

Political Uncertainty in Bangladesh

The situation underscores the political instability in Bangladesh and the urgent need for a resolution to restore peace and order. The international community is closely monitoring developments as Bangladesh navigates this turbulent period.

With the interim government poised to take charge, the coming days will be crucial in determining the country’s path forward.

Air India operated a special charter flight at short notice despite infrastructure challenges at Dhaka Airport late last night and landed in Delhi early this morning, as per information provided by sources.
One of the passengers on the flight, an Indian national, said that the situation in Bangladesh is “pretty much under control now.”
Speaking to ANI, the passenger, Arpit said, “It’s pretty much controlled now. It’s pretty much controlled. Far, much better. From tomorrow, everything is going to be working completely. Factories, offices, banks, colleges, schools. Everything’s going to be okay.”
Asked whether he departed in a situation of panic, Arpit said, “No, it was all okay. However, the airlines have also been opened up. And I came to see my family, just the family was worried.”
On reports of people of a community being targeted, he said, “For Indians, it is not like that. Everything is fine. It’s completely fine.”
Asked about the situation in Bangladesh, following weeks of violence that led to Sheikh Hasina tendering her resignation and leaving the country to arrive in Delhi, he said, “Everything is okay now, even on the roads, and highways, everything is completely fine.”
Arpit also mentioned that people are happy that Sheikh Hasina has left the country. “However, smart people have said that it is a mistake and they will later realize it, said Arpit stating that he would return to Bangladesh after two to three days.
On being asked about people’s reactions to Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, Arpit said, “People were really happy. But, on the other hand, the smart people who have been politically connected, say that they have made a mistake. Later on, they’re going to realize it.”
Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation with Sheikh Hasina tendering her resignation from her post in the wake of mounting protests on August 5. The protests, led mainly by students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs, evolved into anti-government demonstrations.
Another passenger on the plane from Bangladesh that landed in Delhi said that the situation in the country was “normal”.
The passenger said, “I have come to India for treatment.”

Another passenger from Bangladesh, Souradip Roy said, “Now everything is fine there, there is no problem. A lot of massacres happened over there and many students were killed. Officially they say over 200 students were killed, however, unofficially it is more than 1000 students were killed.” He said that he is on a visit to India.
Another passenger from Bangladesh’s Sylhet, Tanveer, said that the situation in Bangladesh is “not so good, not so bad.”

“Situation is not so good, not so bad. The interim government has taken control of the country and we don’t know what comes next. But, we hope for a better outcome.”
“On the 18th of July, I saw it was like a war zone in Bangladesh, near my office in Uttara. After that, there was a curfew and an army and people were getting killed in front of my eyes. I even got a rubber bullet on my that hit me. I even got police that had beaten me for coming out,” he added.

Meanwhile, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, Dhaka Tribune reported. Bangladesh President’s Press Secretary, Joynal Abedin, made the announcement.
The decision regarding the appointment of Bangladesh’s interim government head was made during a meeting between President Shahabuddin and the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that there are an estimated 19,000 Indian nationals of which about 9000 are students while ensuring the country that the government is in close contact with the Indian community in Dhaka.
Jaishankar informed the Lok Sabha that the bulk of the students returned to India in July.
“We are in close and continuous touch with the Indian community in Bangladesh through our diplomatic missions. There are an estimated 19,000 Indian nationals there of which about 9000 are students. The bulk of the students returned in July,” he said.
He also said that Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested approval from India to come at very short notice and she arrived on the evening of Monday.
“On August 5, demonstrators converged in Dhaka despite the curfew. Our understanding is that after a meeting with leaders of the security establishment, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina apparently made the decision to resign. At very short notice, she requested approval to come for the moment to India.

We simultaneously received a request for flight clearance from Bangladesh authorities. She arrived yesterday evening in Delhi,” he said.
The External Affairs Minister also mentioned that the government is monitoring the situation with regard to the minorities living in Bangladesh. Jaishankar noted that ties between India and Bangladesh are exceptionally close.
“Since the election in January 2024, there has been considerable tensions, deep divides, and growing polarization in Bangladesh politics, and “this underlying foundation aggravated a student agitation that started in June this year.”
“There was growing violence including attacks on public buildings and violence continued in July. We counselled restraint and urged the situation be resolved by dialogue, Jaishankar said in his statement in Rajya Sabha.
He said that the growing violence included attacks on public buildings and infrastructure, as well as traffic and rail obstructions.
“Throughout this period, we repeatedly counselled restraint and urged that the situation be defused through dialogue. Similar urgings were made to various political forces with whom we were in touch,” Jaishankar said.

</excerpt>

In Bangladesh, student protests have escalated into widespread violence, resulting in torched government buildings and a complete internet shutdown, marking the deadliest day of the ongoing unrest. The clashes this week between students, pro-government supporters, and armed police have ignited widespread anger over civil service job quotas that opponents argue are discriminatory.

Dozens of people have reportedly been killed, and hundreds injured in the violence. Riot police have used tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters, while crowds of demonstrators armed with sticks have filled the streets and university campuses in Dhaka, the capital, and other cities.

State broadcaster Bangladesh Television (BTV) was off the air on Friday after student demonstrators allegedly set fire to its headquarters, according to local media. Protesters have called for a nationwide shutdown, posing a significant challenge to the government of long-standing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In response to the unrest, mobile and internet services have been cut, schools and universities ordered to close, and security forces deployed to quell the violence. Human rights groups have accused authorities of using unlawful force against protesters.

A police statement issued after a near-total shutdown of the nation’s internet reported that protesters had torched, vandalized, and carried out “destructive activities” on numerous police and government offices. Among the targeted buildings was the Dhaka headquarters of BTV, which remains offline after hundreds of enraged students stormed the premises and set fire to a building.

“About 100 policemen were injured in the clashes yesterday,” Faruk Hossain, a spokesman for the capital’s police force, told AFP. “Around 50 police booths were burnt.”

At least 26 districts across the country reported clashes on Thursday, according to broadcaster Independent Television. The network reported that more than 700 people had been wounded throughout the day, including 104 police officers and 30 journalists.

The near-daily marches this month have called for an end to a quota system that reserves more than half of civil service posts for specific groups, including children of veterans from the country’s 1971 liberation war against Pakistan.

</excerpt>

Universities across Bangladesh have erupted in protests, with demonstrations turning violent and resulting in at least five deaths and hundreds of injuries. Students are raising their voices against the reinstatement of a 30 percent job quota for descendants of 1971 war veterans. The government has responded by cancelling classes and closing affiliated colleges until further notice.

Roots of the Protests

The protests began on July 1, following a decision by the Bangladesh High Court to reinstate the quota, which had been abolished in 2018 after widespread protests. Students from both government and private universities are demonstrating against the quotas, fearing they will be deprived of job opportunities. Nahid Islam, coordinator of the anti-quota protests, stated, “We are not against the quota system in general, but we want the 30 percent quota for the descendants of 1971 freedom fighters to be abolished.”

Government Response and Escalation

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s remarks during a press conference on Sunday further inflamed the situation. Hasina defended the quota, questioning who would receive benefits if not the descendants of freedom fighters. Her comments were seen as demeaning by student protesters, leading to intensified demonstrations and violent clashes.

Spread and Violence of Protests

On Monday, clashes erupted at Dhaka University between protesters and members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Awami League party. Violence spread to other universities, including Jahangir Nagar University, where BCL activists and police reportedly attacked demonstrators. Over 100 students were injured, and at least 50 were treated for pellet wounds.

Government’s Heavy-Handed Approach

The government has deployed riot police and paramilitary troops amid rising tensions. Prime Minister Hasina and other ministers have criticized the protesters, labeling them as “Razakars,” a derogatory term for collaborators with the Pakistani military during the 1971 Liberation War. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan urged students to return to their institutes, accusing them of crossing their limits.

Opposition and Future Implications

The protests have gained political dimensions, with the main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and its student wing calling for further demonstrations. Experts warn that the government’s heavy-handed response could lead to more anger and instability. Asif Nazrul, a law professor at Dhaka University, criticized the government’s approach, suggesting that it is eager to suppress the protests.

Calls for a Resolution

Analysts urge the government to address the grievances of the students. Mohammad Abdur Razzaque, chairman of Research and Policy Integration for Development, stated, “The government needs to find a way to listen to the students’ concerns and find a fair solution to this quota issue. Resorting to violence and labeling the protesters as anti-national forces is only going to exacerbate the situation and deepen the divisions in Bangladeshi society.”

As the situation remains tense, the future of Bangladesh’s universities and the broader social stability of the country hang in the balance.

An IndiGo flight bound for Guwahati, originating from Mumbai with flight number 6E 5319, faced an unexpected diversion to Dhaka due to adverse weather conditions at the Guwahati airport. The pilot, initially planning to land in Kolkata, redirected the flight to Bhubaneswar, where the runway closure led to the final decision to land in Dhaka, the nearest available airport.

IndiGo officially confirmed the diversion of the Guwahati-bound flight and issued a detailed statement addressing the circumstances. According to the statement, “IndiGo flight 6E 5319 from Mumbai to Guwahati was diverted to Dhaka, Bangladesh, due to bad weather in Guwahati.”

In response to the situation, the airline company has taken steps to minimize passenger inconvenience. “Due to operational reasons, an alternate set of crew is being arranged to operate the flight from Dhaka to Guwahati. The passengers were kept informed of updates and were served refreshments on board. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused,” the statement added.

The delay has affected some passengers associated with the Congress party, as they were reportedly en route to Guwahati for the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra scheduled to begin from Imphal on January 14. Suraj Thakur, a Congress worker and AICC delegate, shared on social media, “I took @IndiGo6E flight 6E 5319 from Mumbai to Guwahati. Now, all the passengers are in Bangladesh without their passports; we are inside the plane.”

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has promised to stage a peaceful rally on October 28 in front of the party’s central office in Nayapaltan.
Despite government and law enforcement agencies’ cooperation, the BNP failed to meet their pledge, resulting in serious unrest and public disturbances.

The situation escalated as BNP supporters also targeted the residence of the Chief Justice of Bangladesh during the rally. After noon on Friday, they attacked the Chief Justice’s house, the Judges Quarters, the Police Box, public transportation, and various government properties, including hospitals, according to sources.
Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said “video footage clearly shows the involvement of a Chhatra Dal (BNP’s students’ wing) leader in the policeman’s death”.
The Home minister expressed that “the assault on the Chief Justice’s residence was an unprecedented incident”, vowing “strict action against those responsible.”
