It is believed that the ‘Anusandhan-NRF initiatives’ may also get proper attention in social science research in India.
</excerpt>

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the first meeting of’ Anusandhan-National Research foundation’(ANRF) governing body meeting’. In his deliberations in this meeting, the PM presented his vision of associating research with development of the nation. We usually see research and development as two separate domains. We have failed so far in forging productive interaction in these two domain. PM Narendra Modi gave a direction of how and why these two domains may work together. He also asserted the requirement for engaging research with development. In similar way we see state and academics as separate and sometime binary to each other. Such a perspective in fact weakens the prospect of development of the country. These both domains require to work together at least for developmental mission of the country.
’Anusandhan- National Research Foundation (ANRF) is working to bridge the gap between research and development and forging creative engagement with academics, state, private sectors, lok udyam(people initiative together). ANRF has also proposed to bring together scattered research initiatives and orient them towards development. As we know enormous research initiatives have been taken by institutions, public and other innovative agencies. These initiatives are yet unplanned and non-interactive with each other.
ANRF is aimed to bring them together and also plan them in direction to create cumulative research capital for the development of the nation. It has proposed to bring science, technology, liberals’ studies and social science at one forum to share their innovations and idea resources for the cause of’ Vikasit Bharat’ mission which PM Narendra Modi has envisioned and conceptualised.
ANRF as a funding, idea-sharing and innovative platform may bring more than thousands of our research institutions, universities and public initiatives together for facilitating their innovativeness and using them for the development of the country.
During the meeting, Prime Minister said that today a new beginning has been made with the first meeting of the Governing Body of Anusandhan National Research Foundation.
Prime Minister has emphasised the need to identify and remove obstacles in the research ecosystem of the country.
His appeal to researchers to set big targets and attain them for the cause of the development of the nation. He suggested to the academic and research community of the country to focus on finding new solutions to existing problems. He also reiterated on the need to find local solutions to the problems even of global problem.
In this meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the need for upgradation and standardisation of institutions to do innovative research. PM Narendra Modi during his deliberation gave a valuable advice to prepare a directory of domain experts on the basis of their expertise. In this process he reiterated the need for developing a dashboard where information related to research and development happening in the country can be easily tracked. These methods may certainly help us to plan and organise Indian researches for getting appropriate solutions for local as well as global problems.
To organise and plan of research domain of the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also opined that there is the need for Scientific monitoring of utilisation of resources for research and innovation. It is indeed an ‘ambitious beginning’ as rightly explained by PM Narendra Modi, said the scientific community of the country should have faith that there will be no dearth of resources for their endeavours. Discussing the positive impacts of Atal Tinkering Labs, Prime Minister suggested that grading of these labs can be done. He also highlighted that the various local scientific researches also require support.
Bringing ’Anusandhan – NRF ‘in action may be documented as one of the achievements in his 100 days of third term. In fact, ‘Anusandhan-NRF’ came in to existence by a parliamentary act, 2023. But it an outcome of consistent efforts done by ministry, experts and other research administrators since many years.
By the beginning of Anusandhan- National Research foundation (NRF), there is a hope that Indian research communities and various kinds of people initiatives are going to get more sophisticated and resource support to make their research dream real. Only caution, we need to pose with this ‘Anusandhan- NRF initiatives’ that social science and liberal study research verticals may also get proper attention in this futuristic planning of India research.
Every mega and meta development of any society or country has its social as well human context. These social, developmental and human contexts need to be properly documented, archived and analysed. It is believed that the ’Anusandhan-NRF initiatives may also social science research in India.

</excerpt>

Imagine walking through a bustling city, where you can see not just the buildings and streets around you, but also a layer of digital information enhancing your environment. Street names, historical facts, traffic updates, and even future construction plans appear before your eyes, seamlessly blending with the physical world.

This isn’t a scene from a science fiction movie; it’s the future of urban planning and construction powered by Augmented Reality (AR).

Welcome to the era of smart cities, where AR is transforming how we design, build, and interact with urban spaces. Let’s dive into how AR is paving the way for smarter, more efficient, and more connected cities.

Bringing Blueprints to Life

Gone are the days of flat, static blueprints. With AR, city planners and architects can bring their designs to life in 3D, right in the real-world environment where the structures will stand.

3D Visualization: Imagine being able to walk around a virtual model of a new skyscraper, seeing it from every angle, understanding how it fits into the existing landscape, and making adjustments on the fly. This immersive experience allows for better planning and decision-making.

Community Engagement: AR can transform public consultations. Residents can visualize proposed changes to their neighborhood, such as new parks, roads, or buildings, in a more tangible way. They can provide feedback, seeing exactly how the changes will affect their surroundings.

Enhancing Construction Efficiency

Construction is a complex process, but AR is making it more efficient and precise.

Real-Time Information: Workers can use AR glasses or apps to access real-time data and instructions overlaid on the construction site. This reduces errors and ensures everyone is on the same page.

Safety and Training: AR can enhance safety by highlighting potential hazards and providing virtual training sessions. Workers can simulate dangerous scenarios and learn how to handle them without any risk.

Progress Monitoring: Project managers can visualize the construction progress in real-time, comparing the current state with the digital model to ensure everything is on track.

Infrastructure Maintenance and Management

Maintaining a city’s infrastructure is a never-ending task, but AR is making it more manageable.

Underground Utilities: Imagine being able to see the underground network of pipes, cables, and sewage lines without digging a single hole. AR can overlay this information on the ground, helping workers identify issues and plan repairs more efficiently.

Dynamic Maintenance: AR can assist in real-time diagnostics and maintenance of infrastructure. For example, technicians can use AR to get instant data on a malfunctioning traffic light, guiding them through the repair process.

Smart Traffic Management

Traffic congestion is a major issue in many cities, but AR offers innovative solutions.

Navigation and Alerts: AR can provide drivers and pedestrians with real-time navigation and traffic alerts. Imagine your windshield displaying not only the route but also highlighting traffic jams, construction zones, and available parking spaces.

Public Transport: Commuters can use AR to get real-time updates on bus and train schedules, see the quickest routes, and even find the least crowded carriages.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of smart city development, and AR plays a crucial role in promoting green initiatives.

Green Building Design: AR can help architects design eco-friendly buildings by simulating sunlight, wind flow, and other environmental factors. This ensures optimal placement of solar panels, green roofs, and energy-efficient windows.

Waste Management: AR can optimize waste collection routes and schedules, reducing emissions and improving efficiency. Residents can also use AR to locate recycling centers and learn about proper waste disposal methods.

Future Innovations

The potential of AR in urban planning and construction is immense, and we are just beginning to scratch the surface. Here are some future innovations to look forward to:

Virtual Reality (VR) Integration: Combining AR with VR could create even more immersive experiences for urban planners and residents, allowing them to explore entire neighborhoods in a virtual space.

AI and AR Synergy: Integrating AI with AR can provide predictive analytics, helping cities anticipate and address issues before they arise. For instance, AI could analyze traffic patterns and suggest infrastructure changes, which can then be visualized using AR.

Smart City Dashboards: Imagine city officials having an AR dashboard that overlays key metrics, such as air quality, energy consumption, and traffic flow, onto the cityscape, providing a real-time snapshot of urban health.

Conclusion

As we move towards a future where cities are smarter, more connected, and more sustainable, AR is set to play a pivotal role. By enhancing visualization, improving efficiency, and fostering better community engagement, AR is not just a tool for urban planners and construction workers; it’s a game-changer for all city dwellers.

So, the next time you walk through your city, look around and imagine the possibilities. With AR, the future of urban living is not just something we dream about; it’s something we can build, experience, and enjoy. Welcome to the smart city revolution, where augmented reality turns visions into vibrant, livable realities.

</excerpt>

Currently the fifth-largest GDP in the world, India is at the crossroads of its growth trajectory. A focus on equity and social justice would be crucial to reap the best out of its demographic dividend. For this, we collectively need to contextualize some of the critical spheres where interventions can go a long way in fostering sustained development. These vital spheres include building state capacity across government systems, poverty alleviation, creating sustainable livelihoods, building climate-resilient infrastructure, and enhancing human capabilities in general. A critical reasoning is the need to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Despite numerous challenges such as periodic floods, and geopolitical and security issues, Assam has experienced a renewed impetus in its growth trajectory in recent years. Such growth necessitates active policy action to restrict unemployment and improve healthcare and education indices throughout the state.

While the government’s role over the years has been impressive, it is no wonder that state capacity alone cannot aid such development outcomes. Civil Society Organisations, Non-Profits, and CSR stakeholders are all heavily investing time, energy, and resources in the delivering such critical outcomes in India. Assam currently provides a fertile ground for such experimention, in order to scale development projects.

While the public sector does provide the framework and personnel to scale massive welfare programs, it still lags in its implementation pathways, owing to policy ineffectiveness and inefficiency, high cost of interventions, public sector lethargy amongst others. It impacts the quality of pubic delivery services, inadvertently leading to the mass departure of ordinary citizens to the private sector for basic services such as health and education.

Because of this flight towards market driven services, such a shift also requires that individuals have a higher purchasing power in order to actually spend and acquire these services. For instance, the number of people going to private financial institutions have increased over the years. Hence, taking people out of poverty and the margins is perhaps one of the greatest challenges we face today, as these factors severely skew our development trajectory. As a result, addressing these issues necessitates more investment in outcome-based public services, financial inclusion, and collaborative PPP frameworks in these sectors. Here comes the role of private stakeholders, civil society to handhold the ultra-poor, minorities, and other backward communities through evidence-based interventions.

Poverty traps exist primarily due to the inability to meet basic needs, access basic resources, and the lack of capabilities and financial support. Active interventions can assist impoverished households in identifying employability, providing skilling and training programs, connecting them to government beneficiary programs, and assisting them in opening bank accounts, among other things.

Back in 2011, we initiated a livelihood program under Naimixa, with the help of a CSR corpus under ONGC, in Sivasagar, Assam. Initial observations showed that the people surrounding the village mostly engaged in seasonal cultivation, relying on traditional tools and methods. The returns to labor were minimal, thus perpetuating a vicious poverty cycle.

Through the program, there was an effort to allow diversification into allied sectors such as livestock, and also into more technical sectors such as mobile repairing, and computer training. In addition, women’s self-help groups took part in livelihood training workshops such as pickle-making seminars and beautician training, among other things. Trainees were linked to supply chains where they could sell their produce. A productive asset such as livestock was given to trainees through subsidized government schemes. The programs not only created new micro-entrepreneurs but also created livelihood pathways for a plethora of individuals in the region. Naimixa is now conducts weekly workshops for children in which Sattriya dance classes (a classical dance form in Assam), Borgeet recital training, and spoken English classes are being imparted. Over 100 students have already enrolled and are being actively trained. The workshops have an underlying objective to engage young adolescents and children in art forms and culture, to elevate their multi-sensory, emotional, and cognitive skillsets. This, we believe, is crucial to enhance their capabilities and artistic freedoms. However, institutionalizing such approaches demands far more thorough research, funding, staff capability, and public-private partnerships.

On similar lines, almost two decades back, reflecting on the tragic ethnic conflicts and insurgency issues in Assam, we started a peacebuilding initiative focusing on our fundamental ideals of peaceful coexistence and brotherhood. This initiative pioneered under the Srimanta Foundation, became a movement that aimed to fast-tracked peace and conflict resolution in Assam. Srimanta Foundation for Culture and Society was launched in 2003 by the then Governor of Assam, Lt General (Retd.) S. K. Singha.

While realising the impact we have managed to create in the last few years through these initiatives, we have also tried to encapsulate the key learnings over the years. Firstly, because we have been working in siloes for so long, no substantial feedback learning mechanisms have been developed, through which a benchmarking of best practies could take place. We agree that while such groundwork has increased with so many non profits working in Assam today, we have rarely seen collaborative efforts take place in the ecosystem. Hence the margin for replicating best practices and scaling pilot social programs have been limited in the state.

Within the scope of climate change too, the United Nations Environment Report (2018) states that private-sector investments are critical to close the funding gap. Weather unpredictability, increase in landslides and flood frequency, and increase in temperatures have already begun to hurt the agriculture sector in Assam. The state is one the most climate-sensitive regions in the country, with 15 of the 25 Indian districts most vulnerable to climate change being situated in Assam. Communities that reside in and around floodplains and river banks live under the constant threat of losing their livelihoods to the ravages of climate change. For a state with around 85% of the population depending on agriculture and forests, climate adaptation support for vulnerable communities is the need of the hour today. Beyond fiscal support, we also need to look at the possibility of civil society and private funding pipelines to create sustained livelihoods for such communities.

A more traditional view of philanthropy is premised on the idea that we earn money for the first half of our lives, and then start giving back in the second half. But this notion is constantly being challenged today as catalytic giving has become a part and parcel of investment frameworks, state policy decisions, and corporate agendas worldwide. Our challenges today do not allow us the time and space to delay action toward collective well-being. Given Assam’s unique challenges, it is imperative that we rethink civil society engagements not as charity but as a professionally driven fundamental duty. This article is an attempt at realising some of these issues and bringing together corporate leaders, philanthropists, Non-Profits and multilaterals to start collaborating in order to build effective solutions together.

The CM launched the ‘Him Data Portal,’ a common digital platform that integrates the data of all organisations to improve the delivery of welfare schemes and services.

As part of the upcoming ‘Him Parivar’ project, the Himachal Pradesh government will provide a special digital identity to the people of the state from July 2023, Sukhu announced. The initiative aims to strengthen the state’s benefit delivery systems through ‘Him Pulse,’ which will link digital identity to the delivery of benefits for the targeted population.

Furthermore, Sukhu stated that the Him Parivar Project would provide easy access to information about essential facilities such as ration cards, family registers, electricity, drinking water, and more. People associated with the Him Pariyojna project will also have easy access to information about various welfare schemes, he added.

Organized by the Social Justice and Empowerment Department, this award is presented to several women for their contributions in different fields. Yesterday, ahead of ‘International Women’s Day,” CM Sukhu participated in a state-level function in Shimla and awarded three women with the “Protsahan Puraskar,” and many others were awarded in different fields, such as the “Utkrisht Award for Women.

Addressing the function, CM Sukhu on Monday said that “women are the pillars of society.” He added that “we shall be celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8, but people will be celebrating Holi on the same day as well. Thus, we’ve arranged the programme for women’s day today and are really happy to greet all the women on this occasion. Women have been playing an important role in society,” he added.

CM Sukhu said, “The 73rd and 74th amendment bills were passed under the leadership of late Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi and they provide 33% reservation to women.” He made this comment while talking about the reservation granted to women through the 73rd and 74th amendment bills. Encouraging other women to come forward and serve society, an award-winning woman, Devkanya Thakur, said, “An aware woman can change society and the world. I would appeal to the young women to come forward to serve the society instead of grooming themselves.”

To create high-purity hydrogen through artificial photosynthesis, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur have created perovskite nanocomposite materials based on lanthanides. In the patented process, the scientists employed solar energy to transform water into hydrogen and oxygen while using a highly recyclable catalyst built on a straightforward, inexpensive transition metal.
“In the patented method, the researchers used natural sunlight to convert water into hydrogen and oxygen using a highly recyclable catalyst based on low-cost, simple transition metal. Dr Rakesh K Sharma, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT Jodhpur, is the Principal Investigator of this project,” as per IIT Jodhpur. “The team has now developed a series of catalysts which can efficiently produce hydrogen under ambient conditions. The end application of this research lies in the industries, automobile and energy sectors” IIT Jodhpur said in a Statement.
The statement further said that Hydrogen-based energy is the only viable source for a green and sustainable future.
Hydrogen is expensive and out of the reach of the average person because more than 90% of its source comes from petroleum feedstock. The research group at IIT Jodhpur is looking for a reliable source for producing hydrogen. The IIT Jodhpur team’s invention just requires sunlight as an external energy source.
Highlighting the significance of the research, Dr Rakesh K Sharma, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT Jodhpur, said, “Development of indigenous sustainable catalyst for large scale green hydrogen production is benchmark innovation for next generation happiness.”

PM Modi addressed a public meeting in Andhra University Engineering College after virtually laying foundation of five infrastructure projects worth Rs 10,472 crore. Amongst five projects, two have been dedicated to the nation. India has become the centre of hope for the entire world and it is made possible because the government is functioning in tune with the aspiration and needs of the country’s citizens, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Visakhapatnam.

“Every policy and decision is for making the life of the common citizen better. The world has acknowledged this as experts are praising India’s achievements,” the Prime Minister said, while addressing the gathering.

PM highlighted that the projects for which the foundation stone has been laid envisions a comprehensive growth for Andhra Pradesh. He also said that this development path paves way for multi dimensional growth and focuses on the need of common citizens and presents a systematic strategy for the advanced infrastructure.

“Our government has adopted a new approach to infrastructure development as supply chain and logistics depend on multi-modal connectivity while focussing on an integrated view of development,” he said.

In addition to this, PM Modi said schemes for the welfare of the poor were being expanded. “In this journey of development, the areas that were earlier marginalised have also been included. Even in the most backward districts, development schemes are being run through the Aspirational Districts Program”, he said.
