</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump started his second term with unbridled dominance. His triumph was historic, ratings were high, and the Democratic Party was in disarray. His agenda was passed by Congress with no opposition, and the Supreme Court tilted the way he wanted it to. Protests in LA against the Trump immigration clampdown have erupted into a national revolt.

Courts are thwarting his excesses, the economy is reeling, and his popularity ratings have plummeted. Trump’s deployment of the military on American soil—particularly the contentious deployment of Marines in LA—has fueled popular fury and evoked bitter legal resistance.

Marines in LA: Red Line or Power Grab?

Trump deployed close to 5,000 troops, including Marines and National Guard, to Los Angeles. Initially, they protected federal buildings but now assist in ICE operations and aiding in arrests. California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the action as a “red line” and cautioned that it crosses legal and constitutional limits.

More Americans are against this deployment than for it. A YouGov poll indicates that 47% of Americans disapprove of Trump, while a mere 34% support it. Newsom had criticized the Defense Secretary for not stopping the Marines’ usage, which he described as an abuse of power to earn political points ahead of Trump’s upcoming birthday parade.

Protests Surge, Poll Numbers Fall

The military deployment has not pacified the unrest. Rather, the protests have been extended from LA to 22 other cities, such as New York, Dallas, Boston, and Atlanta. NBC News documented 25 anti-Trump demonstrations this week alone. They are the first wide-scale protests of Trump’s second term, ending months of silence.

In the meantime, Trump’s approval is declining. His policies, 52% of Americans now disapprove of them, according to the same YouGov poll. His promise to put an end to the war in Ukraine within 24 hours has not panned out. Gaza still harks unresolved.

Birthday Parade, Recession Fears, and Rule of Law

Even amid the unrest, Trump is marching forward with a huge military parade on his birthday—Saturday. Though officially to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US Army, it is claimed to be a personal celebration befitting authoritarian dictators.

Better, Trump’s policies have instigated recession anxiety and unsuccessful trade maneuvers. His China trade war failed. His executive abuse has been time and again overruled by courts.

Legal Risks and Authoritarian Fears

Newsom has already submitted a court challenge. Trump might, however, ignore the courts once more, as he did in previous immigration crackdowns. He hasn’t invoked the Insurrection Act, but the military deployment already tests the boundaries of legal power.

Critics worry that this is part of a bigger trend. Trump has consistently refused to accept election outcomes and court decisions. From inciting the 2020 Capitol insurrection to now deploying Marines in the homeland, critics argue that Trump is disassembling the rule of law.

The LA protests could be only the start. And as Trump doubles down, America’s democratic brakes are put through one of their most severe challenges.

US President-elect Donald Trump announced the appointment of former Democrat Tulsi Gabbard as the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) in his upcoming administration. Trump praised Gabbard, calling her a “proud Republican” with the potential to bring her “fearless spirit” to the intelligence community.

Trump’s Statement on Gabbard’s Appointment

Trump highlighted Gabbard’s experience as a former Democratic presidential candidate, emphasizing her broad support from both major political parties. “As a former Candidate for the Democrat Presidential Nomination, she has broad support in both Parties – She is now a proud Republican!” Trump stated in a release.

The president-elect expressed confidence that Gabbard’s “fearless spirit,” which has been central to her career, would benefit the intelligence community. “I know Tulsi will bring the fearless spirit that has defined her illustrious career to our Intelligence Community, championing our Constitutional Rights, and securing Peace through Strength. Tulsi will make us all proud!” Trump said.

Background of Tulsi Gabbard

While Tulsi Gabbard lacks specific experience in the intelligence sector, she has a rich background as a US military veteran. She served for over 20 years in the Army National Guard and has been deployed to Iraq and Kuwait. Gabbard also represented Hawaii’s second district in Congress from 2013 to 2021 and served for two years on the House Homeland Security Committee.

Personal Life and Political Journey

Despite her first name often leading to assumptions about her background, Gabbard has no ties to India. Her mother converted to Hinduism and gave her children Hindu names, which is why Gabbard identifies as a Hindu. She was the first Hindu member of the US Congress and was sworn into office holding the Bhagavad Gita.

In 2020, Gabbard ran for the Democratic presidential nomination, challenging Kamala Harris. She criticized her own party for not opposing wars and ultimately dropped out of the race. In 2022, Gabbard left the Democratic Party, citing its dominance by an “elitist cabal of warmongers” and “woke” ideologues. She joined the Republican Party and publicly endorsed Trump, helping him prepare for his debate with Kamala Harris.

Gabbard’s Personal Life

Tulsi Gabbard is married to cinematographer Abraham Williams. Her father, Mike Gabbard, a state senator, was originally a Republican before switching parties to become a Democrat.

</excerpt>

In a scathing critique, Democratic National Committee Women’s Co-Chair Lindy Li expressed her frustration with President Joe Biden’s decision to endorse Kamala Harris as his successor. During her appearance on Fox & Friends Weekend, Li dubbed Harris’s campaign a “$1 billion disaster.”

Campaign Mismanagement and Misleading Promises

Li highlighted the financial strain on Harris’s campaign, noting a debt of $18-$20 million despite significant fundraising efforts. “I raised millions, and now I have to explain to my donors what went wrong,” Li remarked. She accused campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon of misleading staff and donors, assuring them that Harris had a strong chance of winning.

Biden’s Endorsement Sparks Backlash

Li was particularly critical of Biden’s swift endorsement of Harris, calling it a “big ‘F you’ to the party.” She argued that if Donald Trump posed such a significant threat, Democrats should have adopted a more democratic process for selecting Biden’s successor rather than “coronating” Harris.

Obamas’ Delayed Endorsement

Li also took aim at former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama for their delayed support of Harris. “Their three-day silence was deafening,” she said, emphasizing the lack of unity within the party during a critical time.

Calls for Accountability

Li stressed the need for accountability, urging Democratic leaders to address the mismanagement and regain the trust of party donors and supporters. “The stakes are too high for us to keep making these mistakes,” she warned.

The controversy underscores ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party as it gears up for future elections.

</excerpt>

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, her newly chosen running mate for the upcoming presidential elections in US, made their debut as a ticket on Tuesday. They have held their first ever joint rally at the Temple University’s Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, marking it as an energetic and successful first rally for them as Democratic representatives, by CNN.

Walz, who is also the chair of the Democratic Governors Association, previously served 12 years in Congress and is a second-term governor. The campaign has seen a significant boost, raising over $10 million since Walz’s VP selection was announced, which Harris campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt called “one of the campaign’s best fundraising days this cycle.”

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a former VP candidate contender, showed strong support for Harris and Walz, praising Walz’s credentials and character. “Tim Walz is a great man, an outstanding governor, a teacher, a Guardsman, a great patriot, and a dear friend,” Shapiro said.

On social media, Harris expressed pride in selecting Walz as her running mate, noting his service and dedication. “I am proud to announce that I’ve asked Tim Walz to be my running mate. As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his. It’s great to have him on the team. Now let’s get to work,” Harris posted on X. Walz called his selection “the honor of a lifetime,” reflecting on the campaign’s promising start.

This rally follows President Joe Biden’s exit from the presidential race amid concerns about his age and debate performance.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has announced JD Vance as his running mate, positioning himself for a comeback with Vance, the author of “Hillbilly Elegy.”

</excerpt>

Kamala Harris has made history in the United States by securing the Democratic presidential nomination, becoming the first woman of color to lead a major party in a presidential election. This significant achievement marks a major milestone in Harris’s political career, as she prepares for her presidential campaign. The Democratic National Committee confirmed Harris’s nomination following a decisive victory in the primaries and widespread disapproval of Joe Biden by fellow party members and the American public.

Groundbreaking Achievement

Harris’s nomination is a groundbreaking moment as she becomes the first African American and Indian American woman to secure a top position on a presidential ticket. Her rise to the top tier of the Democratic Party follows a notable career as a US Senator from California and Vice President under Joe Biden. Harris’s journey from prosecutor to the second highest position in the US government now leads towards her potential presidency.

Swift Nomination Process

Harris and her team moved quickly to secure the necessary support from the 1,976 party delegates, reaching this milestone just 32 hours after Biden’s exit. The Democratic National Convention delegates confirmed Harris’s nomination through a five-day online balloting process, with 99 percent of delegates casting their votes in her favor. The formal certification of the vote is scheduled for later this month, followed by a celebratory roll call at the convention in Chicago.

Public Perception and Campaign Strategy

An AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll revealed that 46 percent of Americans view Harris favorably, while a similar percentage holds an unfavorable view. Despite this, Harris’s candidacy has energized the Democratic base, offering a stark contrast to former President Donald Trump. Her campaign plans to focus on themes of democracy, gun violence prevention, and abortion rights, leveraging her prosecutorial background to address Trump’s legal challenges.

Vice Presidency and Transition to Presidential Candidate

As Vice President, Harris faced challenges, including leading diplomatic efforts on Central American migration and navigating public scrutiny. Her visibility increased following the Supreme Court’s 2022 Roe v Wade ruling, where she became a key spokesperson for abortion rights. Following Biden’s exit from the race, Harris’s campaign has gained momentum, particularly in battleground states. Her renewed candidacy has sparked significant enthusiasm among Democrats, with donations and volunteer support surging.

Facing Republican Criticism

Harris is expected to face intense scrutiny from the Trump campaign, which has already begun defining her candidacy with attacks on her immigration record and questioning her diversity. Harris has responded by emphasizing her commitment to unifying the country and addressing divisive rhetoric.

Biden’s Statement
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Biden expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as President. He highlighted the progress made during his term, including economic growth, healthcare improvements, and climate legislation.

Impact of Recent Events
Biden’s decision comes after a challenging debate performance against Donald Trump, which raised concerns about his suitability for a second term. Prominent Democrats have suggested that other candidates, like Kamala Harris or Michelle Obama, might have a better chance in the upcoming election.

</excerpt>

A beleaguered President Joe Biden entered what could be the most decisive weekend of his five-decade political career, as over 30 Democratic members of Congress, the latest being Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, have called for him to step aside. Biden, currently recovering from Covid-19 in self-isolation at his Delaware home, is reportedly feeling “angry and betrayed” by allies amid speculation of a possible withdrawal announcement.

Advisers Discuss Withdrawal

Reports suggest Biden’s advisers are discussing the timing, setting, and details of a potential withdrawal announcement, reflecting a sense of resignation among his campaign staff. An AP-Norc Centre for Public Affairs Research poll released Friday indicated that six in 10 Democratic voters believe Vice President Kamala Harris would make a good president. In response, Harris’ allies are discreetly preparing for her possible transition to the top of the presidential ticket by courting donors and crafting a new campaign message.

Support and Opposition

Biden received a rare show of support from over 1,400 Black female supporters who argued against changing the ticket, emphasizing the democratic process of the primaries. New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also urged Democrats to reconsider their efforts to push Biden out, while Senator Bernie Sanders and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’s campaign arm announced their support for Biden, citing the detrimental impact of another Trump presidency on the Latino community.

Growing Calls for Withdrawal

Despite this support, Biden faces mounting pressure as over 30 Democrats in Congress, including prominent figures like California Representative Adam Schiff, have called for him to step down. The criticism includes senior figures like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who, along with Barack Obama and Bill and Hillary Clinton, Biden reportedly feels have undermined him through their silence.

Recent Developments and Statements

Late Friday, Senator Brown released a statement urging Biden to end his campaign, emphasizing the need to focus on critical issues. Media outlets have reported Biden reconsidering his position, with a close source indicating that Biden might announce his withdrawal soon to allow Harris to take the nomination. Swing state poll data and a boycott by key donors, including Silicon Valley billionaire Michael Moritz, have reportedly shaken Biden’s resolve. Pelosi, using her knowledge of polling data, has reportedly persuaded Biden of his weak position, countering Biden’s insistence on his potential to win based on his aide Mike Donilon’s data.

Public Pressure and Internal Campaign Dynamics

Public pressure intensified as Senators Jon Tester and Martin Heinrich urged Biden to step aside. Many more congressional Democrats have privately called for his withdrawal. Four House members – Jared Huffman, Marc Veasey, Chuy Garcia, and Mark Pocan – issued a joint plea for Biden to step down for the country’s sake. Allies of Pelosi have depicted her as sensitive towards Biden, subtly persuading him while recognizing his achievements and current health challenges.

Internal Campaign Sentiment

Inside Biden’s campaign, sentiments reflect a mix of defiance and resignation. Biden’s campaign chair, Jen O’Malley Dillon, emphasized that Biden had “work to do” and highlighted reassuring appearances post-debate. However, CNN reported a “quiet quit” process among staff, with growing belief that the campaign is nearing its end.

Biden himself reportedly feels “hurt and betrayed” by the party’s leading figures, whom he has previously derided as “elites” pushing him out. An ally compared Biden’s situation to Julius Caesar’s fate, accusing long-time associates of betrayal. Despite the internal and external pressures, Biden’s resolve and potential next steps remain closely watched as the weekend unfolds.

</excerpt>

Hollywood actor George Clooney has urged US President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, citing concerns about Biden’s age and effectiveness. This comes after senior Democrat Nancy Pelosi also hinted that Biden should reconsider his candidacy following a weak debate performance against Donald Trump.

Clooney, a major Democratic fundraiser, wrote in the New York Times that Biden’s age is a significant issue. He expressed disappointment, noting that the Biden he recently met seemed less capable than in the past. Clooney emphasized that age is the primary concern and doubted Biden’s ability to win in US Presidential elections to be held on 5 November.

Michael Douglas, another Hollywood star and Biden supporter, echoed these concerns. He praised Biden’s past performance but stressed the need for a strong, articulate candidate, especially after Biden’s debate with Trump.

Despite these concerns, Biden is determined to run and defeat Trump. However, public dissent within the Democratic Party is growing. Pelosi, during an MSNBC interview, suggested that Biden needs to make a decision soon.

Biden’s campaign defended the president, highlighting his busy schedule and recent international engagements, such as the G7 summit in Italy before a fundraiser in Los Angeles. An unnamed source criticized Clooney for leaving the fundraiser early, while Biden stayed for over three hours

Clooney’s comments reflect a broader unease within the party. Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado predicted a potential landslide victory for Trump, and Peter Welch of Vermont explicitly called for Biden to withdraw for the country’s good. Other Democrats, including Pat Ryan from New York and Earl Blumenauer from Oregon, have also suggested that Biden step aside.

Despite these calls, many elected Democrats still support Biden, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has expressed support but is reportedly open to other options. Senior Democrats note a growing consensus among party members, donors, and supporters about Biden’s candidacy.

At the NATO summit in Washington, questions about Biden’s campaign were prevalent. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed confidence in continued US commitment to the alliance, regardless of the next president.

As Biden prepares for a rare solo news conference and an interview with NBC News, Democratic voters in swing states like Pennsylvania show mixed feelings. Some, like Karren Gillchrist in Harrisburg, remain firmly supportive of Biden, while others, like Melissa Nash in Elizabethtown, express uncertainty about his ability to lead effectively against Trump.

The debate within the Democratic Party highlights the challenges Biden faces as he seeks to secure his party’s nomination and run a successful campaign in the 2024 presidential election.

</excerpt>

A court in South Korea has sentenced a 67-year-old man to 15 years in prison for stabbing Lee Jae-myung. The former leader of the country’s largest political party, the Democratic Party. The incident occurred in January during a public event in the city of Busan, where the assailant approached Lee under the pretense of seeking an autograph before attacking him with a knife.

Lee Jae-myung, who recently resigned as head of the Democratic Party, sustained injuries to his neck in the assault. The assailant, identified only by his surname Kim, confessed to authorities that his intention was to prevent Lee from ascending to the presidency.

During the sentencing hearing at the Busan District Court, the judge emphasized the severity of the crime, describing it as a direct challenge to democracy and a threat to the electoral process, particularly as it occurred ahead of crucial parliamentary elections. The attack drew widespread condemnation from political leaders across the spectrum, including President Yoon Suk Yeol, who denounced it as an act of terrorism.

Investigations revealed that the assailant had recently joined the Democratic Party, although he is not currently affiliated with it. Media reports suggested he had ties to the party’s predecessor, the ruling People Power Party.

The assault took place amid heightened political tensions leading up to South Korea’s parliamentary elections in April, which saw significant gains for Lee’s Democratic Party and other opposition groups against President Yoon Suk Yeol’s conservative administration.

The sentencing marks a significant development in the aftermath of the attack, underscoring South Korea’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring the safety of its political leaders amidst a polarized political landscape.

</excerpt>

The upcoming November election is expected to be highly competitive, as indicated by the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll showing President Joe Biden slightly leading with 40% support among registered voters. Both Biden and former President Donald Trump will compete in what is shaping up to be a closely contested and divisive U.S. presidential election 2024 on November 5th. Additionally, there are several third-party candidates in the running.

Here Is a List Of Candidates Contesting In The US Presidential Election 2024

Republican Party

Former President Donald Trump, who served from 2017 to 2021, has secured enough delegates to clinch the Republican nomination, setting up the first presidential rematch in nearly 70 years. He has emphasized legal challenges to bolster his base and framed his campaign as a response to perceived political foes. Trump has labeled supporters involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack as “hostages” and has employed increasingly dire rhetoric in his campaigning, hinting at potential unrest around the November 5 election.

Facing 88 charges across four criminal cases related to the 2020 election, classified document retention post-office, and a hush money payment to a porn star, Trump denies any wrongdoing. He views these charges as a Democratic ploy to hinder his chances of winning, with some cases potentially going to trial before the election. Trump has shown a willingness to challenge legal decisions, including those involving the U.S. Supreme Court.

Trump’s campaign promises include seeking retribution against opponents if re-elected, though he has tempered such statements with claims of jest. He also aims to reshape the federal workforce and has expressed doubts about accepting election results if unfavorable. Trump’s policies on immigration, abortion, healthcare, and climate change are focal points of his campaign, alongside his foreign policy stance regarding NATO, Russia, Ukraine, and Israel.

Democratic Party

President Joe Biden, seeking re-election, has framed his candidacy as a defense of American values and democracy against perceived threats posed by Trump. With a slight lead in voter support according to recent polls, Biden, at 81, must convince voters of his fitness for office compared to his 77-year-old opponent, Trump.

Biden’s campaign focuses on economic recovery, immigration reform, and international relations, especially in response to conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. While criticized by some for his handling of these issues, Biden aims to garner support through his policies and diplomatic efforts.

Independent Candidates in the 2024 US Presidential Election

1. Marianne Williamson

Marianne Williamson, a best-selling author and self-help guru, reentered the 2024 presidential race with a focus on “justice and love” after initially suspending her campaign. Williamson, aged 71, positions herself against what she perceives as Donald Trump’s “dark and authoritarian vision.” She previously ran as a Democrat in the 2020 primary but withdrew before any votes were cast.

Williamson’s campaign emphasizes progressive values, social justice, and holistic approaches to governance. Her platform includes policies related to healthcare, education, environmental sustainability, and income inequality. While her chances of winning the presidency may be slim, her presence in the race adds diversity to the political discourse and gives voice to certain segments of the electorate seeking alternative perspectives.

2. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., aged 70, is running as an independent after initially challenging Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination. He is known for his activism against vaccines and his environmental advocacy. Kennedy, the son of the late U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, has faced criticism from his own family, who have publicly supported Biden.

Kennedy’s platform includes positions on various issues, such as supporting Israel while questioning certain ceasefire agreements, opposing Trump’s border wall, and advocating for changes in climate policy. He has fluctuated in polls, garnering 8% support among registered voters in a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. While not considered a front-runner, Kennedy’s candidacy adds complexity to the political landscape, especially concerning issues like healthcare, national security, and environmental protection.

3. Cornel West

Cornel West, a political activist, philosopher, and academic, is running a third-party bid for president, likely to appeal to progressive, Democratic-leaning voters. West, aged 70, initially ran as a Green Party candidate but transitioned to an independent candidacy, prioritizing policy outcomes over partisan politics.

West’s platform centers on ending poverty, ensuring housing for all, and addressing systemic injustices. He advocates for bold social and economic reforms, emphasizing grassroots movements and community empowerment. While West’s chances of winning the presidency may be remote, his candidacy reflects a desire for substantive change and challenges mainstream political narratives.

4. Jill Stein

Jill Stein, a physician who previously ran under the Green Party in 2016, is making another independent bid in 2024. Stein, aged 73, criticizes both Democrats and Republicans for failing to address key issues such as climate change, economic inequality, and healthcare access.

Stein’s campaign focuses on progressive policies, including environmental protection, healthcare reform, and economic justice. She brings attention to issues often overlooked by major parties, advocating for systemic changes and challenging the status quo. While her candidacy may not have significant electoral impact, Stein’s presence highlights alternative viewpoints and encourages discussions on critical policy areas.

</excerpt>

Former US Presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard on Tuesday announced her exit from the Democratic Party, blaming the party for racializing every issue in the nation and denouncing it as the “elitist cabal of warmongers.”

Gabbard made the announcement in an approximately 30-minute video posted on her social media account, as she attacked the institution for its practices. Blaming the Democratic party for anti-white racism, the former representative announced that she could no longer be a member of the party of which she remained a part for 20 years.

“I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue and stoking anti-white racism,” Gabbard said in a video posted on her Twitter handle.

Gabbard went on to call on her fellow Democrats to join her and leave the party. However, she has not announced any plans regarding her new political associations or joining the Republican Party as of now.

She grew up in Hawaii and, at 21, ran for the Hawaii Statehouse. She has remained a Democrat for the last 20 years. She lambasted the Democratic Party for undermining the basic freedoms of people in the country. She said that she believes in a government that is of, by, and for the people. However, today’s Democratic Party does not stand by these values.

“I believe in a government that is of, by, and for the people. Unfortunately, today’s Democratic Party does not. Instead, it stands for a government of, by, and for the powerful elite. I’m calling on my fellow common-sense, independent-minded Democrats to join me in leaving the Democratic Party,” she said further in the video.

Notably, Tulsi Gabbard was the first Hindu lawmaker in the US Congress to run for the presidential post. She also served in a field medical unit of the Hawaii Army National Guard in a combat zone in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 and was deployed to Kuwait from 2008 to 2009.
