The city has seen record May rainfall. Five major storms hit the region this month, and the monsoon is advancing earlier than usual this year.
</excerpt>

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded the weather warning for Delhi to orange on Friday, citing the possibility of rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds of up to 70 km/hr. “People must be cautious and ready for possibly disruptive weather,” the IMD warned.

An orange alert, the second-highest in IMD’s alert system, suggests the likelihood of sizeable impact and disruption due to harsh weather conditions.

Rainfall and Weather Outlook

Though there was no alert issued on Thursday morning, the IMD forecasted light to moderate rain. “There can be some very light to light rain chances now. On Thursday, that kind of rain activity will continue, and the intensity is still higher on Friday,” an IMD official stated.

Delhi has already seen a record 186.4 mm of rainfall in May, the most ever recorded for the month. The last record was in May 2008 at 165 mm. To put that in context, the May average rainfall for Delhi is only 30.7 mm.

Earlier during the week, the city witnessed light showers on Monday, while heavy rain with thunderstorms on Sunday resulted in problems, ranging from waterlogging to power cuts, flight delays, and fumigated trees. These occurrences have led the capital’s readiedness for the approaching monsoon season into fresh question.

While Delhi is already under an orange alert, surrounding regions such as Gurgaon and Faridabad are not. Based on the IMD, Ghaziabad and Noida can expect light rain and thunderstorm on Friday but have no colour-coded alerts in their respective cities.

Monsoon Advances Ahead of Time

The southwest monsoon is progressing ahead of schedule this year. It usually reaches Delhi by June 27, but the IMD has yet to announce an arrival date for the capital. “We are keeping a close watch on the progress,” an IMD official stated.

The monsoon arrived early over Kerala on May 24, a week earlier than its usual date of June 1. Mumbai too experienced an early monsoon arrival on May 26, far earlier than its usual date of June 11.

May has been especially severe for Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), with five major storms so far. These storms have resulted in at least 12 deaths, resulting from accidents such as collapses of houses, electrocution, and toppling of trees.

</excerpt>

Delhi experienced 6 degrees Celsius at 5.30 AM in the morning on Sunday acording to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), after a sharpe drop from a day earlier, which was 9.4 degrees Celsius.

At Safdarjung Observatory, the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.9 degrees Celsius at 8.30 am today. The drop in temperature in 24 hours here is 3.1 degrees Celsius, and it is 4 degrees Celsius below the normal temperature of the season.

The minimum temperature recorded at Palam Observatory at 8.30 am today was 6.2 degrees Celsius, which is 3 degrees Celsius below the normal temperature of the season. The drop in temperature in 24 hours is 0.2 degrees Celsius.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital today continued to be in the ‘poor category,’ with further deterioration as the city experienced cold wave conditions.

On Sunday, Delhiites experienced sunrise at 7:06 am, and the sun was expected to set by 5:26 pm, according to the weather department. Currently, the relative humidity is at 11 percent, with a wind speed of 11 km/hr.

On Saturday, the IMD stated that temperatures in Delhi are expected to drop by 1-2 degrees Celsius in the coming days due to shifting wind patterns. Severe cold waves are also likely to be recorded in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh.

IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy attributed the drop in temperature to the prevailing northwesterly winds over Delhi, with southeasterly winds expected to influence North India shortly.

She further highlighted that severe cold waves have already been observed in several parts of North and Central India, especially in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. “In Delhi, northwesterly winds are blowing, and southeasterly winds will soon take over in North India. There is a possibility of a 1-2 degree Celsius drop in temperature in Delhi. Severe cold waves have been recorded in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh,” she said.

Roy mentioned that the cold wave is likely to persist for the next one to two days across North and Central India, causing colder-than-usual conditions. However, temperatures are expected to rise again by December 16-17 due to another shift in weather patterns. “The cold wave will last for one to two days in North and Central India. There is a possibility of an increase in temperature by December 16-17,” she added.

According to the IMD, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 23 degrees Celsius today, while the minimum temperature dropped to 8 degrees Celsius.

On Thursday, Delhi experienced its coldest morning of the season, with the minimum temperature plunging to 4.5 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature reached 23 degrees Celsius, the IMD reported.

According to the CPCB, the AQI was measured at 246 at 7 am in Delhi on Sunday. On Saturday, it was measured at 212. The temperature in the national capital also further dropped. According to the India Meteorological Department, the temperature in Delhi at 5.30 am on Sunday was recorded at 6 degrees Celsius. A day earlier, it was 9.4 degrees Celsius.

In Anand Vihar, Alipur, Bawana, and Burari Crossing, the AQI was recorded at 292, 256, 298, and 288, respectively. In Dwarka Sec 8, the AQI was recorded at 258, Nehru Nagar at 299, Rohini at 288, and Mundka at 317.

An AQI between 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 is poor, 301-400 is very poor, and 401-500 is severe.

This follows a night of light to moderate rainfall that left significant parts of the city waterlogged and disrupted traffic. Multiple weather stations recorded over 100mm of rainfall until Thursday morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast scattered drizzle to light rain in parts of Delhi on Thursday morning. A yellow alert has been issued for the rest of the day, indicating potentially worsening weather with light to moderate rainfall likely in parts of the city.

The heavy rain was caused by a convergence of thunderclouds on Wednesday evening, resulting in extremely intense rainfall of over 50mm per hour initially. The intensity of the rain decreased after 8:30 pm but continued in most parts of Delhi until 2:30 am when the clouds began to clear.

On Thursday morning, police reported that water had been drained from affected areas such as Chaudhary Fateh Singh Marg near Majnu Ka Tilla and the Okhla underpass, which had impacted traffic late on Wednesday evening. Commuters were previously warned to avoid stretches like Anuvrat Marg, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg, Mahatma Gandhi Marg, the carriageway from Moolchand towards Chirag Dilli, and Outer Ring Road.

IMD reported that several weather stations, including Safdarjung, which represents Delhi’s weather, received heavy rainfall—defined as over 64.4mm in a 24-hour period—from 8:30 am on Wednesday until 5:30 am on Thursday. Specific recordings included Safdarjung with 107.6mm, Palam with 68.3mm, Delhi University with 104.5mm, Najafgarh with 112.5mm, and Mayur Vihar with 147.5mm. Moderate rainfall was recorded at Narela (39.5mm) and Pitampura (45.5mm) during this period.

No rainfall was recorded at any weather station between 2:30 am and 5:30 am, which allowed agencies to clear the waterlogged roads.

</excerpt>

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Maharashtra, Kerala, and Konkan Goa on Tuesday, July 16. Red alerts have been issued in several areas due to anticipated downpours. Light rain is also expected to persist in parts of Delhi-NCR throughout the week.

According to the IMD, the monsoon is now moving southwards, with coastal regions of Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Konkan Goa likely to receive over 20 cm of rainfall in the coming days. Red alerts have been issued for Raigad in Maharashtra and Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts in Kerala, while several other districts have been placed under orange alerts.

In Maharashtra, flooding occurred in Thane’s Bhiwandi area as the Kamwari River overflowed, causing water to enter homes and displacing many residents in coastal areas like Sultania Gali.

The IMD has also issued a red alert for south interior and coastal Karnataka for July 16, where heavy rains have already caused flooding in villages like Araga, Chendia, Iduru, and Toduru, and damage to infrastructure in Kodagu district due to thunderstorms.

Dr. Naresh Kumar, an IMD scientist, emphasized the downward shift of the monsoon and highlighted ongoing alerts for the southern regions, contrasting with the expectation of light to moderate rainfall in Delhi-NCR without any alerts issued.

The persistent heavy rains across various states have led to flooding and significant disruptions in daily life, impacting communities with loss of lives and property.

</excerpt>

On Thursday, Delhi had its cleanest air since September 11 last year, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropping to 61, which is considered ‘satisfactory.’ The improvement, the best since an AQI of 53 on September 11, is mainly due to recent rain and strong winds that cleared the air.

Rain’s Role in Improving Air Quality

Dipankar Saha, former head of the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) air laboratory, said the rain was responsible for the lower AQI. “Rain helps reduce pollution by washing it away. However, this doesn’t mean the pollutants are gone forever. When the rain stops, pollution will likely come back.” Saha stressed the need for ongoing efforts to reduce emissions throughout the year.

Monsoon Season Benefits

Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director of research and advocacy at the Centre for Science and Environment, noted that this improvement is typical during the monsoon season. “Consistent and prolonged rain cleans up the air. Monsoon months usually have the cleanest air,” she said.

Past and Present Air Quality Data

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, September 2023 had nine ‘satisfactory’ days and one ‘good’ day, with the AQI dropping to 45 on September 10. October had only one ‘satisfactory’ day, with an AQI of 89 on October 17. No ‘satisfactory’ days were recorded from October 18, 2023, to June 26, 2024.

The first ‘satisfactory’ day of 2024 was on June 27, with an AQI of 79. However, there have been no ‘good’ air days so far this year.

Looking Ahead

The Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi predicts that the air quality will stay ‘satisfactory’ until July 7. After that, it may vary between ‘satisfactory’ and ‘moderate’ for the following six days.

The Importance of Continuous Efforts

While the rain has temporarily improved air quality, experts emphasize the need for year-round efforts to reduce pollution. Maintaining cleaner air requires everyone to take action and consistently work to lower emissions.

This period of cleaner air in Delhi highlights the need for ongoing environmental responsibility to combat pollution and ensure healthier living conditions for all.

The weather department predicts continued heavy to very heavy rain across various regions in Gujarat until July 3, citing the influence of two cyclonic circulations over northern and southern parts of the state.

In contrast, Delhi remains on an “orange” alert from July 2 to July 3, with forecasts of moderate to heavy rain expected during this period. Despite the alert on Monday, Delhi did not record any rainfall.

Meanwhile, in Assam, the flood situation worsened with over 6.44 lakh people affected across 19 districts. The Brahmaputra river has surpassed its highest flood level at Nematighat in Jorhat district, prompting serious concerns. Eight rivers in Assam are flowing above the danger mark, inundating several cities and causing significant distress.

The city’s humidity levels fluctuated between 60% and 97% throughout the day, accompanied by intermittent sunshine in certain areas, making outdoor activities uncomfortable.

IMD has now issued an orange alert for heavy rain spanning Monday to Wednesday, anticipating the monsoon trough’s northward movement over Delhi during this period. Mahesh Palawat, vice president of climate change and meteorology at Skymet, highlighted the expected trajectory: “The monsoon is currently south of Delhi and is projected to progress northward over the city on Monday and Tuesday, bringing prospects of significant rainfall. Subsequently, it will move towards the Himalayan foothills.”

Safdarjung, Delhi’s base station, recorded a maximum temperature of 37.1 degrees Celsius on Sunday, aligning with seasonal norms, while the minimum temperature dipped to 27 degrees Celsius, slightly below average for this time of year.

June witnessed extreme weather patterns, marked by both high temperatures and heavy rainfall. The average monthly minimum temperature of 29.8 degrees Celsius was notably higher than the long-period average, indicative of increased humidity levels and a high heat index, which reached 51 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Regarding rainfall, June 2023 saw a remarkable 243.4 mm, constituting a 228% excess compared to historical averages. This makes it the wettest June since 1936, when the city recorded 415.8 mm of rainfall.

Looking ahead, IMD forecasts heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds of 30-40 kmph for Monday. Temperatures are expected to moderate, with the maximum and minimum hovering around 33 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Recent weather extremes underscore the need for enhanced monsoon preparedness in Delhi, particularly as heavy rains can lead to traffic disruptions and waterlogging, highlighting infrastructure vulnerabilities across the city.

</excerpt>

As predictions of heavy to very heavy rainfall loom over the capital region on Sunday, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to mitigate waterlogging and ensure swift responses to potential issues.

NDMC vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay outlined the council’s proactive measures, stating, “We have identified five vulnerable points prone to water stagnation—Africa Avenue, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Panchkuian Road, Purana Quila Road, and Lodhi Estate—based on feedback from the public and traffic police officers.”

He emphasized that these areas will be under constant surveillance through CCTV cameras to monitor waterlogging conditions. “Super suction machines are operational 24/7 at all identified vulnerable points,” Upadhyay assured.

Each service station is equipped with 10 primary and 10 backup pumps dedicated to managing water accumulation effectively. To bolster response capabilities, an additional 48 employees have been deployed specifically for handling waterlogging across NDMC-administered areas.

“Superintending Engineers are overseeing operations at vulnerable points to ensure timely interventions,” Upadhyay added, underscoring the proactive stance of the council.

Further enhancing their preparedness, Upadhyay highlighted the deployment of extra pumps at Bharti Nagar to swiftly address any water accumulation issues.

The capital city has been grappling with severe repercussions from recent rainfall, which led to 11 rain-related deaths and caused the highest single-day June rainfall in 88 years on Friday. Streets were inundated, disrupting daily life and leaving commuters stranded.

As Delhi braces for more inclement weather, NDMC’s proactive approach aims to minimize disruptions and safeguard residents from the impacts of heavy rainfall.

</excerpt>

After a devastating downpour that shattered records on Friday, Delhi residents are now facing the prospect of more heavy rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the national capital.

The IMD’s orange alert, part of its colour-coded warning system, indicates that Delhi should prepare for heavy rain today and tomorrow, exacerbating the challenges posed by the recent deluge. Friday’s monsoon onslaught inundated several low-lying areas and tragically claimed 11 lives across the city. With 228.1 mm of rainfall recorded, it marked the highest single-day June rainfall since 1936.

IMD scientist Soma Sen explained that the monsoon is advancing, with heavy rain expected in various parts of north India. “Eastern UP has been covered and in the next two-three days, western UP and Haryana will be covered,” she stated.

Images of flooded underpasses, stranded vehicles, and residents navigating through waterlogged streets have been a grim feature since Friday. Tragically, fatalities include children who drowned in ditches and commuters trapped in submerged underpasses. A tragic incident at Delhi airport’s Terminal 1 saw a canopy collapse, crushing several vehicles and claiming the life of a cab driver.

Waterlogging has severely disrupted traffic, with the Pragati Maidan tunnel remaining closed due to inundation. Civic authorities have escalated their response, increasing manpower and deploying additional pumps and suction machines in vulnerable areas like Golf Links and Bharti Nagar.

“We have also deployed additional staff and cancelled off-days of all staff,” affirmed NDMC vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay. CCTV surveillance has been enhanced to monitor vulnerable zones, ensuring swift responses to emerging waterlogging issues.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has mobilized 72 permanent pumping stations and deployed 465 mobile/submersible pumps to tackle waterlogging effectively. “Manpower was adequately deployed in tandem with machines for quick release of water,” an official reported.

As Delhi prepares for more rain, authorities are on high alert, striving to minimize further disruptions and ensure public safety amid the monsoon’s relentless advance.

</excerpt>

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Wednesday that Delhi is likely to experience rainfall by the end of June, signaling an improvement in weather conditions for the capital and surrounding regions.

“In Delhi NCR, the temperature is expected to hover around 40 degrees Celsius. The monsoon is projected to hit Delhi NCR around June 30th. Today, we can also anticipate dust storms and light-intensity rainfall,” said IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar.

Despite the optimistic forecast, the IMD has issued an Orange alert for Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, indicating the potential for significant weather events. “Yesterday, we issued a red alert for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, but today conditions have improved. Bihar has already seen rainfall. For Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi NCR, we have downgraded to an Orange alert. However, West Uttar Pradesh remains under a red alert for the next two days,” Dr. Kumar added.

The regional meteorological center, an IMD subsidiary, predicts the minimum temperature in Delhi to be around 34 degrees Celsius. However, heatwave conditions are still expected in several areas. “Heatwave conditions will persist in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, with isolated areas in Jammu & Kashmir also affected. Warm night conditions are anticipated in some areas of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, as well as isolated places in Rajasthan,” noted the IMD.

As the region braces for the anticipated monsoon, residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and alerts to navigate the changing conditions safely.

This weather system is anticipated to alter wind patterns, potentially paving the way for pre-monsoon activities within the week.

Monsoon Activity Picks Up Across Central and Eastern India

The onset of monsoon in India is gaining momentum, with significant rainfall already observed in Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha. This heralds an active phase for the monsoon season, promising relief from the sweltering heat that has gripped the region.

Bay of Bengal Monsoon to Strengthen

Following a brief lull, the Bay of Bengal branch of the monsoon is set to regain strength. This resurgence is expected to bring pre-monsoon activities to West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Eastern Uttar Pradesh in the coming days, setting the stage for substantial rainfall.

Northern Plains Brace for Monsoon Arrival

From June 20 onwards, a robust monsoon push is forecasted to extend clouds over many parts of the northern plains within the next 7 to 10 days. This period is crucial for northern regions awaiting essential monsoon showers to support agriculture and replenish water resources.

Arabian Sea Monsoon Branch Intensifies

Simultaneously, the Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon is also expected to intensify over the next week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts significant rainfall activities for Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, which will play a vital role in bolstering the agrarian economy and enhancing water reservoirs.

As India braces for the onset of the monsoon season, relief from the persistent heatwave is on the horizon for Delhi and its neighboring areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heatwave alerts for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Chandigarh, predicting that heatwave to severe heatwave alerts will persist over the next five days. On May 23, similar conditions are expected in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch.

Southern India Faces Heavy Rainfall

Contrasting the extreme heat in the north, three districts in Kerala—Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, and Idukki—are under an extremely heavy rainfall warning, with the IMD issuing a “red alert” for Tuesday and Wednesday. Continuous rainfall has prompted the Kerala state government to activate emergency operations across all districts due to the risk of landslides and epidemics. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are also likely to experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.5 mm) on Tuesday, leading the IMD to issue an “orange alert” for these areas.

Heatwave Alerts from Across India

Delhi:

The heatwave has driven Delhi’s peak power demand to its highest ever for May. In response, the Delhi government has mandated that all schools, private and government-aided, commence summer vacations immediately, from May 11 to June 30.

Himachal Pradesh:

The State Education Department has adjusted school timings for classes 1 to 12 to 7:30 am to 1:00 pm following a heatwave alerts for several districts. Local authorities are making decisions based on their specific conditions, with instructions to provide two breaks and ensure adequate water arrangements for students. The heatwave is expected to persist in isolated pockets within the districts of Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Solan, Sirmaur, Kangra, and Shimla for the next four to five days.

Rajasthan:

An Uttar Pradesh man died due to the heatwave in Kota, Rajasthan. The 44-year-old, identified as Mahendra Kushwah from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, was found dead near a hotel in Kota Dadwada on Sunday evening. Pilani, located in Jhunjhunu district, recorded the state’s highest temperature at 46.6 degrees Celsius.

Jammu and Kashmir:

Jammu experienced its hottest day of the season on Monday, with temperatures reaching 42.2 degrees Celsius, which is 3.9 degrees above the seasonal average. The Directorate of School Education has adjusted school timings in the division’s summer zones to operate from 8 am to noon to provide relief for students.

Noida:

The Gautam Buddh Nagar district administration declared summer vacations for students in classes 9 to 12 at all schools in Noida and Greater Noida due to severe heatwave conditions. Summer holidays for students up to class 8 had already been declared.
Due to rains that lashed several portions of Haryana a day earlier, the water level rose “slightly” on Monday. Rains pummeled many portions of the national capital on Tuesday, causing a flood-like condition in several low-lying districts of the national capital. The meteorological service predicted moderate rain in the national capital on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for Himachal Pradesh for the next week. The IMD has expected heavy rain in the state’s seven districts of Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, Mandi, Kullu, and Hamirpur.

The rain will continue in the region for the next week, according to the head of the Himachal Pradesh IMD, and another western disturbance is expected to activate in the state on July 22nd.

“It rained at most places in Himachal Pradesh in the last 24 hours. The highest rainfall was recorded at 120mm at Sirmaur’s Renuka. We have issued a yellow alert for the state during next one week and will issue an orange alert if needed.

Amid the continued rains we have also issued a warning of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and shooting stones in the districts like Mandi, Kullu, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur during the next 5 to 7 days,” Said Surender Paul, head IMD HP.

“The visibility has also reduced because of the fog conditions prevailing in the state. Advisory for all has been issued, we are issuing timely alerts and now on an hourly basis,” said Surender Paul further.

Notably, torrential rainfall in the hilly province of Himachal have resulted in an unreported rise of the Yamuna, triggering floods in Delhi.
