While the administration called it a breach of protocol, NSUI defended it as a rightful interaction.
</excerpt>

Surprise appearance of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at Delhi University’s North Campus on Thursday has triggered controversy, with the university condemning the event and student groups exchanging sharp barbs over protocol, politics, and purpose.

The unscheduled meeting took place at the office of the DUSU president, where Rahul Gandhi met students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) to hear their grievances about academic justice and representation. The visit was, however, opposed vehemently by the administration, calling it a “breach of institutional protocol.

According to a university statement, Gandhi’s presence, lasting nearly an hour, disrupted campus functioning. “The DUSU office was cordoned off by security cover and no one was allowed to enter,” the statement noted. ABVP claimed that members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) denied the DUSU secretary access to her office. Furthermore, the university alleged that NSUI students misbehaved with some students and promised strict action against those involved.

DUSU President Defends Invite of Rahul Gandhi

DUSU president Ronak Khatri, who is a member of the NSUI, vehemently denied the university’s allegations. According to him, there is no regulation demanding prior clearance to welcome a private guest. Khatri replied that he hosted the visit peacefully within the DUSU Office compound and exercised his entitlement to invite any guest.

Rahul Gandhi barged into DU unannounced, turning a peaceful campus into a political circus. But the real drama? Students confronting him over his disgraceful Pahalgam remarks and disrespect towards our forces!

He left embarrassed without answering!! pic.twitter.com/Ty7ppyVsR6

— Megh Updates 🚨™ (@MeghUpdates) May 22, 2025

He termed the university’s press release as “factually incorrect” and “administrative overreach,” pointing out that the visit did not breach norms of security and did not disturb public activity. He asserts that political motives are driving an attempt to strangle independent student rule.

ABVP Joins Fray, Calls It A ‘Photo-Op’

Moreover, the RSS-supported Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which currently holds several seats in DUSU, termed the event as “bad theatre” and a mere “photo-op.” In its press note, ABVP further claimed that the organisers limited the interaction exclusively to NSUI members and, therefore, called it an “echo chamber,” arguing that it denied broader student representation.

With emotions running high, the episode has fueled discussions around political liberty within university territories, student body autonomy, and institutional appropriateness.

</excerpt>

In the second round of seat allocations for the 2024-25 academic session, the University of Delhi (DU) on Sunday allocated 24,869 seats across various undergraduate programs. This comes after 65,775 students confirmed their admissions in the first round.

Despite only 6,100 seats remaining out of the total 71,600 sanctioned, the university allocated more seats in anticipation that many students may not accept their offers. “In the first round, around 35,000 students did not accept their allocated seats. Considering this trend, we are allocating more seats in the second round to ensure all seats are optimally filled and classes can begin on August 29,” said DU Dean of Admission Haneet Gandhi.

Of the 43,067 candidates who opted for upgrades, 27,554 were allocated seats with higher preferences in this round. Additionally, DU reconsidered candidates who were initially rejected due to invalid certificates or documents, re-evaluating them under the unreserved (UR) category based on merit and seat availability.

To streamline the admission process, the university enhanced its system to automatically activate the allocation of upgraded seats, enabling colleges to process these admissions directly. This change is expected to address grievances from students who previously faced challenges when missing out on upgraded seats.

Students allocated seats in this round must confirm their acceptance by 4:59 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, and pay the required fees by 4:59 p.m. on Friday, August 30, 2024. Those seeking further upgrades must complete the payment within the given deadline.

The third round of allocations, which will focus on performance-based programs and supernumerary quotas, including CW, ECA, Sports, and Ward categories, will be announced shortly.

</excerpt>

On Wednesday, Delhi University’s Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh firmly declared that the university would exclude Allama Iqbal’s works from its curriculum, referring to Iqbal as the instigator of India’s partition.

Singh also elevated Vinayak Damodar Savarkar to the same level as Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar, announcing that Delhi University would include the works of Gandhi, Ambedkar, and Savarkar in its curriculum, but would not teach Iqbal, whom he accused of initiating the partition of India leading up to 1947.

Iqbal, famous in India primarily for writing the poem “Saare Jahan Se Accha,” is also regarded as Pakistan’s national poet. During the inaugural session of the national seminar on ‘Unravelling the Partition of India,’ organised by the Centre for Independence and Partition Studies at the University of Delhi, Singh acknowledged that people are entitled to their own opinions about Iqbal but stressed that Delhi University would not compromise the nation’s unity and integrity.

“Iqbal was the initiator of the partition of India. He was an advisor to Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan,” Singh said. “He wrote Saare Jahan Se Accha Hindustan Hamara as a student of Government College Lahore in 1904. He also wrote Tarana-e-Hind, but himself didn’t accept it.”

The Vice-Chancellor thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the initiative to observe Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. Singh stated that the day is meant to honour those who sacrificed for the country, noting that while no one desired the partition of India, there was no significant opposition to it at the time. “Around 20 lakh lives were lost and 1.5 crore people were displaced, but no one spoke up,” the VC said.

Singh encouraged the students to pledge to uphold the unity and integrity of the nation without compromise. “The security of the nation is the first duty of every citizen,” he said, adding that universities have a responsibility to foster a sense of patriotism. “Along with education and research, universities should prepare minds so that when a crisis comes upon the nation, they all stand together for the country,” he said.

Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, the chief guest at the event, stated that August 14 is a day to honor the victims of the Partition and to hope that India will never experience such a situation again.

“Dr B.R. Ambedkar himself suffered the pain of Partition. The area of Bengal from where he was elected to the Constituent Assembly was merged with East Pakistan,” said Meghwal, urging Delhi University administrators to encourage research on topics related to the Partition.

The Delhi University (DU) on Wednesday extended Phase 2 of the admission process till Friday, August 9, at 11:59 p.m.

Phase II, where candidates must fill in their preferences for programme + college combinations, was originally scheduled to conclude on Wednesday.

“Candidates who have already completed Phase I must log in to their dashboard to finalize their preferences for programme and college combinations. The preferences saved by candidates will determine their allocation and admission. It is strongly recommended that candidates select the maximum number of preferences for which they are willing to accept admission,” the university said in a notification.

Additionally, DU has announced that trials for performance-based programmes, extracurricular activities (ECA), and sports supernumerary quotas will likely begin on Monday, August 12, 2024.

These programmes include a B.A. (H) in Music, Bachelor of Fine Arts, B.Sc, Physical Education, Health education, and Sports.

“Allocations for these quotas will commence in the third round. Candidates are advised to check the admission website (admission.uod.ac.in) and respective college or department websites regularly for detailed schedules,” the university said.

The admissions process for the 2024-25 academic session is currently underway.

Delhi University is offering admission to over 71,000 seats across more than 65 colleges through the Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate (CUET UG).

Delhi University initiated Phase 2 of the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) for undergraduate admissions last Friday, following the release of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) – UG results by the National Testing Agency.

The university has also published the allocation-cum-admission schedule for the 2024-25 academic session.

Applicants can still register for DU undergraduate admissions until August 7 at 4.59 pm. During Phase 2, candidates are required to match the subjects they studied in Class 12 with those they appeared for in CUET UG 2024. Only CUET papers corresponding to subjects passed in board exams will be considered for admission. Upon the completion of Phases 1 and 2 of the CSAS, a simulated rank list will be published on August 11.

Candidates will have the opportunity to revise their preferences from 5 pm on August 11 until 11.59 pm on August 12.

The first merit list for DU UG admissions is set to be released on August 16 at 5 pm. Candidates can accept their seats from 5 pm on August 16 to 4.59 pm on August 18. Subsequently, colleges will verify and approve the online applications of the candidates.

The academic session was initially scheduled to commence on August 1 but was delayed due to the late announcement of CUET results by the NTA amid allegations of discrepancies in NEET and UGC-NET exams.

This year, DU has introduced a single girl child quota under its supernumerary category, allowing a single girl child to be admitted based on merit across various programs.

</excerpt>

Delhi University (DU) will use Class XII marks to fill any remaining vacant undergraduate seats after the completion of regular admission rounds, Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh announced on Thursday.

This decision follows a directive from the University Grants Commission (UGC), which issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) for Central Universities to ensure full enrollment in undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programs.

The UGC emphasized that leaving seats unfilled throughout the academic year wastes resources and denies quality higher education to students.

Yogesh Singh commented on the UGC directive, saying, “We welcome the directive by UGC. We are equally sensitive to the fact that seats in any course should not remain vacant. We will use Class XII marks to fill the vacant seats in UG programs.”

Last year, Delhi University faced a situation where about 5,000 seats remained unfilled despite various efforts to complete admissions.

According to the UGC SOP, universities may conduct their entrance exams for UG and PG courses if seats remain empty after standard admission rounds.

Regarding the possibility of holding an entrance exam to address vacant seats, Singh stated, “We will not hold an entrance exam but will ensure all seats are filled in the university.”

The admission process for the 2024-25 academic year is currently underway. Delhi University is offering more than 71,000 seats across over 65 colleges through the Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate (CUET UG).

The admissions process began on May 28 with the first phase, which saw around 270,000 students register on the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal. However, the start of phase two has been delayed due to the postponement of CUET UG results. The university aims to proceed quickly once the results are available to fill all seats.

The UGC guidelines state that CUET scores will remain the primary admission criteria for central universities. However, students who have taken CUET but did not apply to specific universities may still be considered. Additionally, universities may conduct their own entrance exams or screening tests if seats remain vacant after all CUET applicants have been considered. The SOP also allows for flexibility in domain-specific criteria for admission based on CUET scores.

To be eligible for promotion, undergraduate students at all DU colleges must now have a cumulative grade point average of 63 percent in the first and second semester.

Students representing Delhi University in sports, extracurricular activities, the National Cadet Corps (NCC), and the National Service Scheme (NSS), among others, may be excluded from the criterion if approved by their college’s responsible authorities.

This action has been made following implementation of the National Education Policy’s (NEP) Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022 at Delhi University, according to a university official.

“Under the previous passing and promotion rules, a student was eligible for promotion from first year to second year of the course provided he/she cleared 50 percent of the exams of first and second semesters taken together. The students had to clear seven papers and obtain a total of 22 credits to get promoted,” an official stated.

</excerpt>

Delhi University (DU) has secured the top position among central universities in India in the QS World University Rankings-2025. It has also climbed to the 7th spot among all institutions in the country, a significant improvement from 9th place last year. Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh highlighted that DU has made the highest progress among the top 10 institutions in India, advancing by 79 ranks.

Professor Singh commended the entire DU community for this accomplishment, attributing it to the faculty and students’ significant contributions to the academic environment and nation-building. The University of Delhi has notably improved its ranking, rising to 328th in the QS World University Rankings 2025 from 407th last year, placing it among the top 22% of institutions globally.

In specific indicators, DU ranks among the top 270 institutions worldwide in four areas: 44th in Employment Outcomes, 220th in Sustainability, 225th in Academic Reputation, and 269th in Employer Reputation. </excerpt>

The University of Delhi has introduced a portal for admissions to its 71,000 undergraduate seats for the 2024-25 academic session. Interested candidates can register online for DU CSAS UG 2024 on the official website. The university offers a total of 79 undergraduate programs across 69 colleges, all of which will be filled through this admission process. Admissions will be based on merit scores in the Common University Entrance Test for undergraduate programs (CUET-UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency.

Dean of Admission, Haneet Gandhi, announced in a press conference, “Admission to the DU UG courses for the academic session 2024-25 will be conducted through DU CSAS portal 2024.” The process involves applying to the University of Delhi, indicating course and college preferences, and then seats will be allocated accordingly.

The portal has also been launched for undergraduate admissions to the School of Open Learning (SOL) and Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB). Candidates will need to pay the DU CSAS UG 2024 registration fee. Admission through CUET will begin after the results are declared.

Previously, admissions to DU undergraduate courses were based on cutoff marks from Class 12 board exam scores. With the new process, candidates will specify their preferred course-college combination after the CUET results, forming a priority list that will determine seat allotments.

Once a seat is allocated in a round, candidates must “accept” the seat before the deadline for that round, as inactivity will be considered non-acceptance of the seat.

</excerpt>

The Delhi University has filed an appeal with the Delhi High Court’s division bench, appealing a single bench judgement that overturned the University’s decision to debar NSUI National Secretary Lokesh Chugh.

On Friday, a panel of Justice Satish Chander Sharma and Justice Nazmi Wajiri requested the response of Lokesh Singh, PhD scholar and national secretary of the Congress’ students wing, to the Delhi University’s appeal. In April, a bench led by Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav overturned the debarment ruling and reinstated the admission.

“The order is set aside. Admission is restored,” said justice Kaurav said. The bench stated that a review of the record will show that the petitioner (Lokesh Singh) was not given a fair hearing and that his position was not considered by the Committee.

The University violated the concept of natural justice, according to the high court. It was also highlighted that the order was issued without any explanation for the decision.
After hearing Attorney General R Venkatramani’s submission, the high court allowed the University the right to take action in accordance with the law.

The bench took note of Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal’s submission on behalf of petitioner Lokesh Chugh. He said that neither the petitioner nor the police detained him at the rally. The FIR did not name him.

It was also claimed that, in response to the show cause notice issued to the petitioner, he came before the university’s committee and justified his actions. His submission did not appear in the sequence.
