From early morning, key roads like Anuvrat Marg and the Dhaula Kuan flyover were heavily congested, with thousands of vehicles stuck due to rising water levels. Commuters were trapped in many parts of the city, creating widespread chaos. In Noida, the rain caused severe flooding, with streets in Madhu Vihar submerged up to car windows.

Aurobindo Marg was also severely affected, with large parts of the road underwater. This caused major traffic problems, leaving vehicles stuck and forcing pedestrians to wade through knee-deep water. The flooding stretched from Aurobindo Road to the IIT flyover in south Delhi, making travel very difficult.

The Delhi Traffic Police and other authorities are working hard to manage the situation. Traffic was rerouted from the worst-hit areas, and people were advised to avoid unnecessary travel. Despite these efforts, the heavy water flow made it hard to keep traffic moving smoothly.

Metro services were also disrupted. The Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector-25 Metro station had to close its entry and exit points, and the shuttle service between Delhi Aerocity Metro station and Terminal 1-IGI Airport was temporarily stopped. Passengers at Saket metro station faced difficulties as the area around the station was flooded, forcing them to wade through water to reach their destinations.

Despite the efforts by authorities to manage the impact, the heavy rain continues to pose significant challenges for commuters and residents across Delhi-NCR. The situation remains tough, and people are being urged to stay indoors and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

The dominant air pollutants in Delhi’s air were PM2.5 and PM10. On Tuesday, the union ministry of earth science’s air quality monitoring centre, System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (Safar) said, “Air Quality Index indicates ‘moderate’ air quality. Dust (size more than 2.5 micrometer) contributes around 59% to PM10. For the next 3 days (21st, 22nd, 23rd September) peak wind speed is likely to be around 10-12 km/h causing moderate dispersion and AQI is likely to be within ‘moderate’ due to trace rainfall spells. Moderate temperature (32-33°C) and mixing layer height (around 2.0 km) maintains moderate ventilation.”

Delhi has seen a marginal dip in the temperature on Thursday morning as the national capital has witnessed light to moderate rain and gusty winds with a speed of 30–40 km/h. This even resulted in an improvement in air quality, which was classified as satisfactory.

The maximum temperature is expected to be around 30°C while the minimum is to be 25°C, which when compared to Wednesday was 33.6°C and 26.4°C respectively.

RK Jenamani, India Meteorological Department (IMD) scientist, said a depression that formed over Odisha and moved towards northwest India sent easterly winds with moisture towards Delhi-NCR and led to a three-day spell of rain. He said, “As this depression has moved closer, we are seeing the effect of these strong easterly winds, which has led to an increase in the speed of surface winds locally. The moisture is also leading to cloudy skies, which has led to a drop in the mercury. “

The intensity of rain will reduce from Friday evening, with no rain expected from September 17 to 20.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, and 401 and 500 “severe”. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was at 63 on Thursday morning at 7 a.m.

The monitoring agency, System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research, said on Wednesday that the satisfactory level of AQI is expected to last till Saturday. They said, “For the next three days, peak wind speed is likely to be around 14–29 km/h, causing moderate dispersion and AQI is likely to be within the range of’satisfactory’ due to expected light/trace rain spells.”

Earlier, the city had recorded a minimum of 0.2 degree Celsius in January 2006, according to the IMD.

The Safdarjung Observatory, which provides representative data for the city, recorded a minimum of 1.1 degrees Celsius while Lodhi Road weather station logged 1.4 degrees Celsius; though Ayanagar recorded 4 degrees Celsius, and it was 4.1 at Palam and 5.2 on the Ridge.

“Delhi’s Safdarjung recorded coldest morning of January in a decade, with minimum of 1.1 degrees Celsius. It was 1.9 degrees recorded on January 6 in 2013. The lowest ever it reached was on January 16 in 1935 when it recorded minus 0.6.

“Temperatures will rise tomorrow (Saturday). Rain is possible between January 3 and 5,” said Mahesh Palawat from private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather.

The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, has issued a stringent warning, asking everyone to avoid physical activity outdoors and consult doctor if they experience unusual coughing, chest discomfort, wheezing, breathing difficulty, or fatigue.
