Airspace restrictions and heightened security measures caused delays. Additionally, 24 airports were closed, affecting civil flight operations until May 10.
</excerpt>

Disruption in air services persisted at Delhi Airport for a second consecutive day due to heightened tensions between Pakistan and India as airspace restrictions forced the cancellation and delay of flights. The condition deteriorated further after Pakistan unleashed a drone and missile attack on Indian cities spread across Jammu, Punjab, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.

Delhi International Airport recorded 228 cancellation of flights within the last two days. At least 138 flights were grounded on Friday when 63 arrived domestically, 66 departed domestically, 4 arrived internationally, and 5 departed internationally.

Cancellations on May 9 broken down:

Domestic Departure: 66

Domestic Arrival: 63

International Departure: 5

International Arrival: 4

On May 8, more than 90 flights were cancelled, and over 200 flights were delayed, mostly between 8 am and 2 pm in peak hours.

“Delhi airport operations are normal. But because of changing airspace conditions and increased security protocols, some flight schedules and security processing times might be affected,” DIAL tweeted on X on Friday.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which operates Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), India’s busiest airport, also requested passengers to provide additional time at security checks and comply with airline and security staff for seamless processing.

An additional disruption came as the Civil Aviation Ministry stated that 24 airports would be closed for civil flight operations till May 10. The impacted airports are Amritsar, Bathinda, Bhuj, Jammu, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and others.

Tensions between the two nations escalated after a Pakistani missile and drone attack was launched on Indian areas. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the attack had been launched from Pakistan, even though Indian air defence systems intercepted the attack successfully. This led to power outages, air raid alarms in several cities, and the postponement of an ongoing IPL match in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.

This ramp-up comes after India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, a military attack on Pakistan and PoK in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam.

</excerpt>

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport on Sunday reacted to a complaint from Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, whose IndiGo flight was diverted unnecessarily to Delhi. The diversion was caused due to operational limitations due to runway infrastructure work and sudden alteration in wind patterns, airport officials said.

The incident took place when Abdullah’s flight, initially heading for Delhi, was diverted to Jaipur, pushing his arrival back to 3 AM. The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) responded to the situation on social media site X, giving a detailed response to Abdullah’s complaint.

“Dear Mr. Abdullah, since you might have heard, we’ve released various advisories concerning the unseasonal reversing wind patterns in Delhi. Runway 10/28 has remained closed for upgradation of ILS since 8th April, after due consultation with all stakeholders and taking into consideration the past wind patterns,” DIAL said.

They also added, “Furthermore, the transition to more easterly winds and utilization of converging runways for easterly landings have caused temporary capacity limitations during this upgrade. These circumstances, occasionally, cause flight diversions for the sake of passenger safety. We truly apologize for the inconvenience.”

Omar Abdullah expresses frustration at delay

Earlier that day, Omar Abdullah had taken to X to express his anger over the absence of information from the airport and airline officials after his flight had been diverted to Jaipur.

In a strongly worded tweet, he wrote, “Delhi airport is a bloody shit show (excuse my French but I’m in no mood to be polite). 3 hours in the air after we left Jammu we get diverted to Jaipur & so here I am at 1 in the morning on the steps of the plane getting some fresh air. I’ve no idea what time we will leave from here.”

He subsequently updated, “In case anyone is wondering, I reached Delhi just after 3:00 am.” DIAL had previously issued weather advisories, encourages passengers to remain informed

The airport authority stressed that they had already made weather-related advisories in advance, cautioning passengers regarding possible delays and diversions. These warnings were part of DIAL’s initiative to inform travelers during uncertain weather conditions in the capital. They also urged passengers to stay in contact with their respective airlines for immediate information on flight statuses.

So far, IndiGo has not made an official comment on the incident.

</excerpt>

Delhi Airport has vowed to hold an “exhaustive probe” after an incident where a Gurugram-based orthopedic surgeon had an Apple Watch stolen by two persons, one of whom is suspected to be the store employee from IGI-Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Dr. Tushar Mehta, a surgeon from Gurugram, posted details of the incident on microblogging site X. Passengers are questioning why government-run healthcare services have been removed from the airport, leaving travellers with limited access to basic medical care without incurring fees. As the debate about the privatisation of airport services intensifies, many are calling for the government to re-establish essential healthcare provisions at airports, emphasising that health and safety should not be profit-driven in such critical environments.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in curbing smartphone smuggling at international borders.

Concealment Method Revealed

According to officials, the woman had cleverly concealed the high-tech smartphones within her vanity bag, wrapping them in tissue paper to avoid detection. This attempt to bypass customs regulations caught the attention of officials based on intelligence inputs received prior to her arrival.

Estimated Value of Seized Phones

The confiscated iPhones, which are the latest model in Apple’s lineup, have an estimated total value exceeding ₹37 lakh (approximately $44,500). The iPhone 16 Pro Max, being the top-tier model in the series, is highly sought after, making it a prime target for smugglers.

Ongoing Investigation

Following the seizure, customs officials have initiated further investigations to uncover the broader network behind this smuggling attempt. The authorities are focusing on how the woman acquired such a large quantity of high-end smartphones and whether she is part of a larger smuggling operation.

This incident serves as a reminder of the stringent measures in place to prevent the illegal importation of goods and the ongoing efforts of customs officials to combat smuggling activities at airports.

No injuries were reported, and the DGCA is investigating the incident.
</excerpt>

An IndiGo flight bound for Bengaluru was forced to return to Delhi airport after suffering a tailstrike during takeoff. The incident occurred on September 9, and while no passengers were injured, the aircraft sustained noticeable damage to its tail section.

What Is a Tailstrike
A tailstrike occurs when the tail of an aircraft makes contact with the runway during takeoff or landing. This can lead to significant damage, especially to the rear pressure bulkhead, a critical part of the aircraft’s structure.

Emergency Landing and Safe Return
After the tailstrike, the pilot immediately informed air traffic control (ATC), who cleared the aircraft to return for an emergency landing. The flight, numbered 6E 6054, landed safely without any injuries to passengers or crew.

Investigation Underway
Following the incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Delhi airport authorities launched an investigation to determine the cause of the tailstrike. The crew has been removed from duty pending further investigation, and alternative arrangements were made for the passengers.

IndiGo’s Response
As of now, IndiGo has not released an official statement on the matter. Further updates from the airline and regulatory authorities are expected as the investigation progresses.

Passengers can rest assured that safety measures were swiftly implemented to avoid any casualties.

</excerpt>

On Wednesday, August 14, Delhi Airport achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Indian airport to earn Net Zero Carbon Emission Airport status under the Airport Council International’s (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Airport Infrastructure Limited, announced that Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has attained Level 5 certification for Net Zero Carbon Emissions, making it the first airport in India to achieve this status.

“This prestigious certification recognises the airport’s commitment to reaching and maintaining a net zero carbon balance for emissions under its control, while also extending efforts to influence and report on all other emissions,” it stated.

The statement highlighted that Delhi Airport’s attainment of Level 5 certification emphasises its leadership in sustainability and carbon management, with an initial objective set to achieve “Net Zero Carbon Emission Airport” status by 2030.

“Through relentless efforts, innovative strategies, and proactive initiatives such as the adoption of renewable energy, development of green airport infrastructures, promotion of electric vehicles, and implementation of zero waste to landfill programs, DIAL has met its target well ahead of schedule,” it stated.

DIAL also noted that by achieving Level 5 certification, Delhi Airport has made substantial progress in cutting its Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 90%. The remaining residual emissions have been managed through approved offset removals, meeting the stringent standards of the ACA program.

DIAL also affirmed its commitment to reaching net zero Scope 3 emissions by 2050, in line with ACI’s ACA frameworks and the global movement towards sustainability.

Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL, said, “Reducing carbon emissions from airport operations has been a key focus for us at IGIA. Achieving carbon-neutral status in 2016 and Level 4+ transition accreditation in 2020 was just the beginning. Now, with the attainment of Level 5 net zero emission accreditation in 2024, we have once again demonstrated our commitment to continual improvement and sustainability. As we face the challenges of climate change, we are committed to further reducing our carbon footprint and exploring sustainable aviation fuel options to address Scope 3 emissions. Achieving ACI’s Level 5 certification well before our target date is a testament to our dedication to sustainability and innovation.”

Additional amenities include an Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS), Individual Carrier System (ICS), and Self Baggage Drop (SBD) kiosks. The terminal also boasts an expanded Shop and Dine area, a prayer room, a yoga zone, quiet spaces, and other facilities designed for enhanced comfort and convenience.

Terminal 1 is well-connected with the Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line and offers regular bus services through the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). A shuttle service also facilitates travel between Terminals 1, 2, and 3.

Cityside improvements at Terminal 1 include expanded parking facilities and reconfigured pick-up and drop-off lanes to better manage vehicle traffic. On the airside, a redesigned apron with 82 Code C stands, dual taxiways, and advanced technology ensures efficient aircraft handling, faster turnaround times, and improved air traffic flow.

Operations at the old Terminal 1 were halted in late June due to a roof collapse that resulted in the death of a cab driver and injuries to eight others. Recently, Murlidhar Mohor, the minister of state for civil aviation, stated that the civil aviation ministry has set up a high-level expert committee, including structural engineers from IIT Delhi, to investigate the roof collapse incident.

</excerpt>

In a surprising turn of events at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, a traveller’s attempt to answer questions in Hindi led to his arrest. Bound for Dhaka, Bangladesh, Obaidir Rahman faced scrutiny at the Bureau of Immigration counter. An Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer, reportedly enraged by Rahman’s use of Hindi, filed a First Information Report (FIR), resulting in the arrest of two individuals so far.

Rahman, who was set to board Air India flight AI-237 to Dhaka, was detained and extensively questioned by immigration officials. Upon examination, his passport listed his name as Obeduddin, further complicating the verification process. Obeduddin’s address was noted as Ridhora village in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district.

Rahman’s attempt to respond in Hindi raised suspicions, prompting officers to conduct a thorough interrogation. Initially evasive, Obeduddin eventually confessed, revealing his involvement in a theft case. He admitted to immigration officers that he is a Bangladeshi citizen from Berhamganj, Bangladesh, and had illegally obtained an Indian passport for international travel. During the interrogation, officials also discovered a Bangladeshi passport and national ID card in his possession.

IGI Airport Police are now investigating how Obeduddin acquired the Indian passport and are probing potential accomplices involved in the illegal acquisition.

This incident highlights a pattern of language-based profiling at Delhi airport. Recently, Babuti Barua, another Bangladeshi citizen, was apprehended after arriving from Moscow. Barua possessed an Indian passport issued under the name Arka Biswas, which he used for travel from Moscow

</excerpt>

Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport are being disrupted, with numerous delays due to high surface temperatures.

According to ANI, a senior Ministry of Civil Aviation official stated that while safety guidelines are being adhered to, flights are sometimes delayed or have to wait for wind speeds to stabilize.

High temperatures cause the air to become less dense, impacting the lift needed for aircraft takeoff, as explained by another senior official from a domestic airline. This reduced air density affects the lift, particularly during takeoff and the initial climb, and may also cause mid-air turbulence.

“In extreme weather conditions such as high temperatures and strong winds, we only proceed after receiving clearance from Air Traffic Control (ATC),” the official said.

The Alternatives

Alternatives include adjusting operations by reducing fuel or baggage, and in some cases, removing passengers to enable the aircraft to operate, the official added.

For instance, an Indigo flight 6E 2521 from Delhi to Bagdogra was delayed on June 17 due to high ground temperatures affecting operations.

Non-Functioning AC in aircraft

Regarding complaints about non-functioning air conditioning in aircraft, a senior domestic airline official mentioned that the extreme heat outside makes it difficult for the air conditioning system to cool the plane effectively on short-distance flights. This can cause discomfort to passengers while taxiing or idling on the runway due to rising cabin temperatures.

New Delhi has been facing intense heat waves and soaring temperatures.

Guru Sewak Singh, who had dyed his hair and beard white to appear older, was caught by CISF officials on Tuesday at Terminal-3.

Singh, posing as 67-year-old Rashvindar Singh Sahota, presented a passport bearing the false identity during a security check before boarding an Air Canada flight. However, CISF officials became suspicious due to the mismatch between his youthful voice and skin texture and the age stated in the passport.

“The man’s appearance, voice, and skin texture seemed significantly younger than the details provided in the passport. Closer observation revealed that he had dyed his hair and beard white and was wearing glasses to appear older,” a CISF statement revealed.

Upon interrogation, Singh admitted to his true identity. Officials also discovered a photo of his real passport on his phone, confirming his age as 24. Singh has been handed over to Delhi Police for further legal action.

</excerpt>

A 13-year-old boy has been detained for allegedly sending a false email claiming there was a bomb on a Toronto-bound Air Canada flight from Delhi, police reported on Tuesday. The boy confessed that he did it “just for fun” to see if he could be tracked down, according to authorities.

The incident came to attention when a bomb threat email for flight AC043, scheduled from Delhi to Toronto, was received at 11:25 pm on June 4, as reported by Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGI Airport) Usha Rangnani. This led to a high alert at the Delhi airport and the activation of full emergency protocols to ensure passenger safety. A thorough search of the flight confirmed the threat was a hoax.

Following a complaint from Air Canada, an FIR was filed. The police investigation revealed that the email account used to send the threat had been created and deleted within a few hours on the same day. Tracing the email led the police to Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, where they discovered the sender was a 13-year-old boy.

During questioning, the boy admitted that he got the idea after watching news about a similar hoax at Mumbai Airport and wanted to test the police’s ability to trace such threats. Using his mobile phone and his mother’s Wi-Fi, he created and sent the email.

The DCP stated that the boy “was very excited when he saw the news about the hoax bomb threat at the Delhi airport the next day but did not share any information with his parents out of fear.”

The Juvenile Justice Board has taken the boy into custody, and police have seized two mobile phones used in the incident, said DCP Rangnani.

</excerpt>

To enhance the experience of international travellers, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), and Delhi International Airport (DIAL) have come together to introduce check-in services at two metro stations- New Delhi and Shivaji Stadium. This means passengers can now leave their bags at these stations, leaving them free to explore the city on Tuesday.

Through DMRC and DIAL collaboration, an advanced automated system will be developed. Which means, before roaming the city, their bags will be properly transferred to the aircraft.

Initially, introduced for domestic travel, this service will now be extended to international passengers.

This service will be operated from 7 am to 9 pm at above-mentioned metro stations after it gets implemented.

However, travelers should check in their bags 12 to 2 hours before domestic flights and 4 to 2 hours before international flights.

According to Air India chief customer experience officer Rajeev Dogra believes, that this initiative will provide two benefits-

One, it will provide cost effective option for travellers from distant place. Second, it will deal with congestion at the airport and last, it will make the journey faster and easier.
