Meet Elliston Berry: Teen Victim of Deepfake Porn in US Recounts Horror

Elliston Berry, the victim who was in attendance at President Donald Trump’s speech to Congress, related her experiences of suffering from Deepfake pornography in a recent video. Apparently, one of her schoolmates used AI to create an image of her naked.

The official White House Instagram handle posted Elliston Berry’s video. “Elliston Berry joined President Trump at the Joint Session, a 15-year-old survivor of AI deepfakes who is battling to safeguard America’s children,” the caption read.

“With the Take It Down Act and backing from @FLOTUS Melania Trump, the next generation is safer from these attacks,” it continued.

In the video, Berry said she was a victim of the AI deepfake. She added, “A classmate of mine cyberbullied me and eight of my friends and subjected an innocent Instagram picture to an AI-editing app that stripped us naked and circulated it around my entire school. ” She then stated how she managed to take the picture off the internet.

One individual commented, “Wow, something good for once.” Another remarked, “That’s a good start. Protecting children from gun violence at schools should be the next step.” A third person noted, “This will be very important going forward. ” A fourth wrote, “You go, girl, spread that awareness and I’m very sorry it happened to you. ”

First Lady Melania Trump received two young women to her husband’s address. Among them was Elliston Berry from Aledo, Texas. She was also spotted with Melania Trump on Capitol Hill on Monday, where the First Lady met with lawmakers to discuss the sharing of sexually explicit images of victims without their consent.

“Hayley Ferguson, who was helped by the First Lady’s ‘Fostering the Future’ program and will complete her education, become a teacher. And Elliston Berry, who was a victim of a illegal deep fake photo created by a classmate. With Elliston’s help, the Senate just passed the Take It Down Act,” Trump stated in the speech.

Cara Hunter Calls Deepfake Attack ‘Horrific’, Creator Still Unidentified

Cara Hunter, Ireland’s assembly member, recently disclosed that the person behind a deepfake video targeting her has yet to be identified. The video, which emerged almost three years ago, is a digitally manipulated version of her face pasted onto another person’s face. Such a video went viral on WhatsApp and social media just before the elections in Stormont this year 2022.

A deepfake is a manipulated video or image in which Artificial Intelligence (AI) replaces one person’s face with another, and it can do so with shocking accuracy. In the case of Hunter, manipulated images and videos can be pretty convincing and destructive.

Hunter’s case has brought to light the dangers of deepfakes, especially the growing prevalence of such technology, which can be used maliciously. Despite the attack on her image, Hunter still does not know who created the deepfake video.

Hunter’s Campaign for Legal Action

Since the video went viral, Cara Hunter has been campaigning for a change in the law in Northern Ireland to criminalize the production of deepfakes. Speaking on BBC Radio Foyle’s North West Today program, Hunter said that although the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) was “very sympathetic,” there was no specific legislation and investment in cybercrime technology to pursue the matter further.

“What’s very sad is that we’re now almost three years on from what happened to me and, right now, the same thing could happen again – to any woman, to any child, to any man,” said Hunter. She noted that deepfakes present a “real sinister use of this technology,” and expressed the need for accountability in these cases.

Lack of Cybercrime Resources in Northern Ireland

Hunter further indicated that Northern Ireland is actually behind other nations in addressing deepfake crimes. She gave an example of Germany’s AI centers, which, on the one hand, innovate AI and, on the other hand, provide guidance and support for victims of deepfake technology.

“We don’t have anything like that here,” she said, adding that countries like Germany are “far further ahead” in providing both legal and emotional support for victims. Hunter also called on the Department of Justice (DoJ) to allocate more resources to tackle cybercrime effectively.

Hunter’s experience has brought attention to the dire need to toughen laws that guard individuals against malicious digital hacking, among them, deepfakes. She has urged Northern Ireland to adopt a sturdier legal system dealing with rampant cybercrimes and manipulation in the digital space.

Google’s Bid To Suppress Explicit Deepfakes In Search Results Is Failing

Google is ramping up its initiatives to eliminate explicit AI-generated deepfake images and videos from its search results. The company aims to ensure that non-consensual deepfakes are not accessible through its search engine. Given the offensive nature of these images, Google is committed to pushing them far from the first page of search results if complete removal is not possible.

Historically, Google has allowed people to request the removal of explicit deepfakes. However, the rise in generative AI image creation has necessitated stronger measures. The request system has been streamlined for quicker and more efficient submission and processing.

Once a request is validated, Google’s algorithms will also filter out similar explicit results connected to the individual. This means victims don’t need to manually search for every variation that might show the content.

Google’s system will automatically identify and remove duplicates of the image and related content, tackling the widespread nature of such images across the internet.

On YouTube, Google has improved its measures against unauthorized deepfakes. Previously, YouTube merely labeled AI-created or misleading content. Now, individuals depicted in such videos can submit a privacy complaint, prompting YouTube to give the video’s owner a few days to remove it before reviewing the complaint.

Despite these efforts, Google acknowledges that content removal is not foolproof. Therefore, it has updated its ranking system to reduce the visibility of explicit fake content and associated websites in search results.

For example, when users search for news regarding a celebrity’s deepfakes and their testimony to lawmakers, Google will prioritize legitimate news stories and related articles over the deepfakes.

Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram have also revised their policies to combat AI-generated explicit content. Meta’s Oversight Board has recently suggested changes to include such content and to enhance the appeals process.

Lawmakers are taking action as well. New York State has enacted a bill targeting AI-generated non-consensual pornography under its “revenge porn” statutes. On a national scale, the U.S. Senate has introduced the NO FAKES Act of 2024 to address explicit content and the non-consensual use of deepfake visuals and voices. Likewise, Australia is drafting legislation to criminalize the creation and distribution of non-consensual explicit deepfakes.

Google has reported some success in reducing explicit deepfakes, noting that early tests with these new measures have decreased the presence of such images by over 70 percent. However, Google acknowledges that further work is required.

It’s crucial to understand that the absence of something in search results does not mean it doesn’t exist. Mukesh Ambani Deepfake: Ayurveda Doctor Loses Rs 7 Lakh To Share Trading Scam

A 54-year-old Ayurveda doctor from Andheri fell victim to a share trading scam, losing over Rs 7 lakh. The scam enticed her through an Instagram reel featuring a deepfake video of industrialist Mukesh Ambani, praising a company called ‘Rajiv Sharma Trade Group’ and endorsing its BCF Investment Academy for lucrative returns.

This incident marks the second occurrence of a deepfake video featuring Mukesh Ambani endorsing a stock trading mentorship program. In an earlier incident in March, a similar video surfaced where Ambani recommended following his “student Veenit” on social media for free investment advice.

The victim, Dr. K K H Patil, was duped between May 28 and June 10, during which she transferred a total of Rs 7.1 lakh to 16 different bank accounts. She became suspicious when she attempted to withdraw the Rs 30 lakh shown as profit on the trading website, revealing the fraud.

On Wednesday, the Oshiwara police filed an FIR against an unidentified individual under IPC sections for impersonation and cheating, and under the IT Act section for identity theft. Authorities believe that the scammers utilized deepfake technology to create the deceptive video. The police are coordinating with bank nodal officers to block the transferred funds.

Patil explained that she encountered the video on Instagram and was persuaded by what appeared to be a legitimate endorsement. After conducting online research that indicated the company had offices in BKC and London, she decided to invest her money.

Rajkumar Rao Calls For Strict Laws Against Deepfake Videos

Amid the current discussions surrounding AI and the emergence of deepfake videos featuring various celebrities like Rashmika Mandanna, Aamir Khan, and Ranveer Singh, actor Rajkumar Rao has voiced his apprehension and said “there should be strict laws.”

During an interview with ANI, Rajkummar Rao also discussed his forthcoming film ‘Srikanth’, scheduled for release on May 10. When questioned about the proliferation of deepfake videos and whether he perceives this as a threat, Rao emphasized the need for stringent regulations against the misuse of Artificial Intelligence. He stressed the importance of providing comprehensive information about the utilization of AI and remarked that only a small fraction of the country’s populace is cognizant of AI.

“If someone misuses it or anything, there should be very strict laws,” he said, adding that steps should be undertaken to prevent misuse.

Rajkummar expressed being deeply moved upon learning about Srikanth’s life while discussing the movie.

“When I got to know about Srikanth’s life, when I first heard his story from Tushar, I was also very moved. I was very inspired that a person achieved so much at such a young age despite being visually impaired. So I thought this story is very important to spread to the world because we all need inspiration in our lives. Sometimes, we feel low and want to get out from the situation. Srikanth is such a character which will entertain and inspire you at the same time.”

In ‘Srikanth’, Rajkummar steps into the shoes of Srikanth Bolla, portraying the remarkable journey of the industrialist who overcame visual impairment to establish Bollant Industries. Rajkummar elaborated on his preparation process for the role.

“It was necessary. That preparation was needed for this film because I have never played a visually impaired role before. So, it all started when I started going to blind school. Just to understand their perception and what they feel about the world and how they deal in situations. I spent a lot of time with Srikanth as I am depicting his life on screen. Google To Make its ‘Porn Ads’ Policy Stricter; Why?

Cracking down on AI-generated sexually explicit content services, tech giant Google has updated its advertising policy to ban websites and apps involved in the generation of deepfake pornography.

This new policy will be in effect on May 30, 2024. Under this updated Inappropriate Content Policy, advertisers involved in the promotion of deepfake apps or websites will face immediate suspension without warning.

This rule will also apply on those advertisers, who are also found to be providing instructions on creating, endorsing, or comparing various deepfake porn services.

As a result, the violators won’t be able to publish their ads on google.

These changes come at a time when there are growing concerns over the availability of tools that allow users to create manipulated pornographic content.

Some of these apps even masquerade as wholesome applications to secure listings on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Simultaneously, they also promote their ability to generate deepfake porn on social media platforms.

Earlier Steps Taken by Google

Already, Google current policies places strong restriction on ads which feature certain sexual contents.

But these updates don’t take any chances on the promotion of “synthetic content that has been altered or generated to be sexually explicit or contain nudity.” which is a clear violation of company’s rules.

Earlier too, google began banning services that produce sexually explicit content from appearing in shopping ads. This ban also covers tutorials and pages advertising deepfake porn generators.

Further, it has also allowed the advertisers to remove these ads before the start of the implementation on May 30.

UP: Noida Police Arrests Man for Posting Yogi Adityanath’s Deep Fake Video

The Noida Police have apprehended an individual who stands accused of disseminating a deep fake video featuring Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The video, generated using Artificial Intelligence, surfaced online through an account referred to as ‘X,’ attributed to ‘Shyam Gupta RPSU.’ Authorities from the Cyber Crime Police Station in Noida reported that the video, uploaded on May 1, propagated misleading information aimed at bolstering anti-national sentiments.

Following an alert from the Noida Unit of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force, charges were filed under sections 468, 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code, and section 66 of the Information Technology Act at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Noida. The accused, identified as Shyam Gupta from Barola in Noida’s Gautam Buddha Nagar, will face further legal proceedings under the jurisdiction of the Cyber Crime Police Station in Noida.

This incident occurred shortly after another instance involving a ‘doctored’ video allegedly featuring Amit Shah, wherein the Union Home Minister was purportedly heard expressing opposition to reservations in the country. On April 30, the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police issued summonses to 16 individuals across several states in connection with the dissemination of the fabricated video involving Shah.

Aamir Khan Deepfake Video Case: Mumbai Police register FIR against unidentified person

According to an official, the Mumbai Police have filed a formal complaint (FIR) against an unidentified person about a deepfake video that allegedly shows Bollywood actor Aamir Khan endorsing a political party.

The official stated that Khan’s office filed a complaint at the Khar police station on Wednesday, citing relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including the Information Technology Act, 419 (impersonation), and 420 (cheating).

Khan appears in the alleged 27-second tape, which appears to have been edited using artificial intelligence (AI), discussing avoiding hyperbole (jumla).

Although Mr. Khan has previously increased awareness through Election Commission efforts over the years, a representative for the actor stated on Tuesday that he has never supported a political party.

The contentious deepfake video features Mr. Khan in a scene from a previous episode of his show, “Satyamev Jayate,” which aired ten years ago.

“We want to clarify that Mr Aamir Khan has never endorsed any political party throughout his 35-year career. He has dedicated his efforts to raising awareness through Election Commission public awareness campaigns for many past elections,” the statement from Mr. Khan’s spokeswoman said.

“We are alarmed by the recent viral video alleging that Aamir Khan is promoting a particular political party. He would like to clarify that this is a fake video and totally untrue. He has reported the matter to various authorities related to this issue, including filing an FIR with the Cyber Crime Cell of the Mumbai Police,” Khan’s spokesperson stated in a statement.

Italian PM Demands Compensation for Deepfake Videos: Report

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has requested a compensation of 100,000 euros following the uploading of few deepfake videos of her online, according to a BBC report.

Meloni is set to testify in a Sassari court on July 2.

According to the BBC report, a 40-year-old individual, suspected of creating the videos, along with his 73-year-old father, are currently under investigation. They allegedly replaced Meloni’s face with that of an adult film actor in the purported video.

Both individuals now face defamation charges.

The suspects were reportedly located by authorities through tracing the mobile device used to upload the purported adult videos, as per the report.

Information provided by Meloni’s legal representative indicates that the videos were posted on an adult content site in the US, where they accumulated “millions of views” over numerous months. Significantly, the deepfake videos were uploaded prior to her assuming office as Prime Minister in 2022, as per the BBC report.

Maria Giulia Marongiu, Meloni’s lawyer, characterized the compensation requested by the Prime Minister as ‘symbolic’ and stated that if awarded, she would donate the amount to a fund to support women who have been victims of male violence.

“The compensation was meant to send a message to women who are victims of this kind of abuse of power not to be afraid to press charges,” the report quoted Marongiu as saying.

In compliance with Italian law, specific defamation cases can lead to criminal charges and potentially result in imprisonment.

Deepfake videos are a form of synthetic media where the appearance of a person in an existing image or video is substituted with the likeness of someone else.

Even in India, numerous deepfake videos featuring Bollywood actors such as Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, Nora Fatehi, and others were posted on social media.

In November 2023, a deepfake video of Rashmika Mandanna gained traction on social media. The video depicted the face of British-Indian influencer Zara Patel, clad in a black top, which was digitally altered and substituted with that of the Bollywood actress. In January, Delhi Police apprehended a B-Tech graduate from Andhra Pradesh responsible for producing the video.

Following reports of celebrities’ faces being altered onto another video, new protection standards are being discussed, which will include features such as watermarking AI-generated content, deepfake detection, data bias guidelines, privacy, and concentration safeguards.

“Deepfakes have emerged as a new threat to democracy. These (can) weaken trust in society and its institutions,” Vaishnaw had said after meeting with various stakeholders, including social media platforms, Nasscom and other professors from the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
