</excerpt>

The death toll from devastating wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles has risen to 16, as reported by local authorities on Saturday. Five victims were found in the Palisades Fire zone, while 11 fatalities occurred in the Eaton Fire zone. The fires, fuelled by strong winds and dry conditions, have left large swathes of Southern California in ruins.

Palisades Fire Sparks Evacuations in Affluent Neighbourhoods

The Palisades Fire, one of the largest blazes, continues to expand northeast, prompting fresh evacuations in upscale neighbourhoods such as Brentwood and Bel Air. The fire, which has already consumed 23,600 acres, is only 11% contained. Firefighters are working tirelessly to prevent the flames from reaching cultural landmarks like the Getty Center art museum and residential areas in the San Fernando Valley.

Eaton Fire and Other Blazes Cause Widespread Damage

Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire has scorched 14,000 acres and is 15% contained. Alongside the Palisades Fire, it remains a primary concern due to the extensive destruction. In total, six major wildfires—including the Kenneth, Hurst, Woodley, Lidia, Sunset, and Tyler Fires—have burned nearly 40,000 acres, destroying over 12,000 structures, including homes and businesses.

Rising Costs and Leadership Challenges

Initial estimates suggest these wildfires could become the costliest in U.S. history, with projected damages ranging from $135 billion to $150 billion, according to AccuWeather. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom face mounting criticism over resource management and emergency preparedness.

Governor Newsom has launched an investigation into why a 117-million-gallon water reservoir was unavailable, leaving some hydrants dry during critical moments. Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley also criticised insufficient firefighting budgets and inadequate water supplies, which hampered containment efforts.

Humanitarian and Security Efforts Underway

Animal rescue organisations and volunteers have stepped in to aid displaced pets and livestock. Donations of food, blankets, and essential supplies have poured in for residents and animals alike. At a local racetrack, displaced residents sifted through donated items to meet their immediate needs.

Amid reports of looting, authorities have enforced nighttime curfews and established checkpoints to secure affected areas. However, the measures have caused frustration among residents, many of whom faced long delays while trying to return to their properties.

The Road Ahead

While several smaller fires have been contained, the Palisades and Eaton fires continue to burn aggressively, posing significant threats. Officials warn that dry winds could intensify, exacerbating the already dire situation.

As Los Angeles grapples with this catastrophic disaster, questions about leadership, resource allocation, and preparedness remain at the forefront. The full extent of the damage is still unknown, but early estimates underscore the immense scale of the tragedy, with countless residents left homeless and struggling to rebuild their lives.

The list includes names, ages, and ID numbers. Despite Israeli skepticism of Gaza’s reported death toll, UN investigations in past conflicts have found Gaza’s casualty figures to be generally accurate.
</excerpt>

Gaza’s health ministry has released a list identifying 34,344 Palestinians who have died in Israeli attacks since the war began, detailing names, ages, genders, and ID numbers for more than 80% of the total death toll. The remaining 7,613 victims are still unidentified, as their bodies have been recovered but not yet confirmed by hospitals or morgues.

The deceased include 169 infants born after the Hamas attacks on October 7, which initiated the war, and a man born in 1922, who had lived through over a century of conflict. The list spans 649 pages, with most names arranged by age, illustrating the devastating impact on Gaza’s young population. Notably, over 100 pages are dedicated to children under the age of 10, with the first adult names only appearing on page 215.

While Israeli officials have cast doubt on the accuracy of the death toll provided by Gaza’s health authorities, citing Hamas’ control over the territory, past conflicts have shown these figures to be generally reliable. United Nations investigators have previously found that Gaza’s records closely match their own in past wars.

The newly released list adds over 2,000 names to the total number of identified victims, though it does not differentiate between civilians and fighters. However, the majority of the 34,344 identified deaths are civilians, based on age and gender data. Among the dead are 11,355 children, 6,297 women, and 2,955 elderly individuals.

Israel, on the other hand, claims to have killed 17,000 militants, though it has not provided evidence or estimates for civilian casualties. The official death toll from Gaza’s health authorities also excludes those still trapped beneath rubble from collapsed buildings, as well as those who have died from indirect causes such as hunger, disease, and the collapse of the healthcare system. Officials estimate around 10,000 people remain buried under ruins, with more lives lost to deteriorating living conditions, which will be accounted for once fighting ceases.

The death toll remains at 224 with 152 still missing. Search efforts continue with over 1,000 personnel involved.
</excerpt>

On Tuesday, rescue teams in Kerala’s Wayanad district, hit by devastating landslides on July 30, recovered seven additional body parts. The search operations focused on landslide-affected villages and areas along the Chaliyar river.

Current Status and Findings

The death toll from the disaster remains at 224, but with 189 body parts found so far, the total number of fatalities will be confirmed through DNA testing. There are still 152 individuals reported missing. Search teams have been combing through affected areas including Punchirimattom, Mundakkayi, Chooralmala, and the Sunrise Valley. Three body parts were retrieved from Meppadi and four from Nilambur.

Rescue Efforts

A total of 1,174 personnel, including army, forest department, and fire force members, are involved in the search, aided by 84 earthmovers and dog squads. Over 18,000 volunteers have registered to help. Relief camps are currently housing 648 families (2,225 individuals). Plans are underway to move them to new facilities to clear schools for reopening.

Government Response

The Kerala government is providing free rations and power supply for six months to displaced families. The Vellarmala School will be rebuilt, and online classes have started for students affected by the disaster. The cabinet sub-committee overseeing relief operations is also working on relocating displaced residents to temporary housing.

Search operations will continue as authorities work to identify victims and provide relief to those affected by this tragic event.

</excerpt>

On Monday, the Bangladeshi student group leading the protests, which have escalated into deadly violence, announced a 48-hour suspension of demonstrations. According to Nahid Islam, the leader, they did not want to achieve reform “at the expense of so much blood.”

What started as protests against an end to politicized admission quotas for government jobs, spiralled into some of the worst unrest during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure as prime minister. A curfew has been imposed, soldiers patrol cities, and a nationwide internet blackout severely restricts the flow of information.

“We are suspending the shutdown protests for 48 hours,” Islam said from his hospital bed, where he was being treated for injuries inflicted by those whom he claimed to be undercover police. He called on the government to lift the curfew, to restore internet access, and to stop targeting student protesters.

On Sunday, the Supreme Court slashed the number of reserved jobs for such groups as the descendants of “freedom fighters” from Bangladesh’s 1971 liberation war. Islam said movement leaders wanted quota reform but “we never wanted this kind of reform at the expense of so much blood, so much killing, so much damage to life and property.”

The violence has killed at least 163 people, including some police officers; isolated incidents are continuing. Four people with bullet injuries were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Monday. Authorities have arrested at least 532 people in the capital since the protests began last week, including opposition leaders.

Ali Riaz, a politics professor at Illinois State University, denounced the violence, saying it was “the worst massacre by any regime since independence.” He said that “the regime only believes in using bayonet and does not care for human lives.”.

Noble Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus has called on the world leaders and the United Nations to do their best to stop the violence and bring to justice those responsible for the killings. Yunus had crossed swords with Hasina earlier, when he came out strongly against the way the present government has handled things, pointing out that some of the victims were high school students.

Questions have been raised by diplomats over the Bangladesh authorities’ reaction to protests. US Ambassador Peter Haas charged Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud with presenting a one-way presentation of the events by not rolling out film footage showing the police firing at unarmed protesters.

The Supreme Court ruled to bring down job quotas from 56 percent to 7 percent, still keeping a big chunk for “freedom fighters’ descendants,” which disappointed protesters who demanded the total revamp of the system. Critics state that this quota system allows them to hire loyalists of Hasina’s ruling Awami League and accuse her government of manipulating the judiciary and misusing state institutions to keep power and quash dissent.

</excerpt>

The flood situation in Assam’s Nagaon district remains dire, impacting numerous lives as the Brahmaputra River continues to overflow, claiming 84 lives across the state. Local resident Rita Sahani and her family have been displaced for the past 10 days, taking shelter in a makeshift tent on an embankment after their home was submerged.

Rita Sahani expressed her distress, stating, “There is still floodwater inside our house and we cannot go there. We are facing a lot of problems. The rain continues, and we cannot work to earn a living.” Many others in the area, like M Chouhan, echoed similar sentiments, describing the loss of household items and the challenges of living with large families in temporary shelters.

Kalipad Das lamented uncertainty, unsure of when they could return home due to extensive flooding in the area. The flood has affected nearly 14.39 lakh people, with about 79,000 individuals in Nagaon district alone, including over 20,000 children, still grappling with the aftermath. The deluge has submerged 184 villages and inundated 18,231.8 hectares of crop area in Nagaon.

While the flood situation shows marginal improvement, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority reports ongoing challenges, emphasizing the need for continued relief efforts and support for affected communities.

This year’s flood has tragically claimed 84 lives across Assam, underscoring the urgent need for sustained relief and rehabilitation efforts in the region.

</excerpt>

The flood situation in Assam remained dire on Saturday as six more individuals lost their lives, bringing the total death toll to 70, according to an official bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Two fatalities were reported in Charaideo, with one each in Goalpara, Morigaon, Sonitpur, and Tinsukia districts due to the devastating floods. Approximately 2.4 million people across 29 districts have been affected, and floodwaters have submerged 68,768.5 hectares of cropland.

Dhubri is among the hardest-hit districts, with nearly 798,000 people affected, followed by Cachar with 175,231 affected individuals, and Darrang with 163,218 affected people. About 53,429 individuals have sought refuge in 577 relief camps.

Major rivers like the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, including the Burhi Dihing, Dikhou, Disang, Dhansiri, Jia Bharali, Kopili, and Sankosh, are flowing above danger levels, causing widespread inundation. The Barak river is also exceeding danger marks at several points.

The floods have affected 1,549,161 animals and claimed the lives of 114 wild animals. Infrastructure damage includes 126 roads and two bridges, highlighting the extensive impact of the ongoing flood disaster.

</excerpt>

The death toll of Keralites in the tragic fire incident in Kuwait has risen to 24, with the bodies expected to return to Kerala tonight. The Department of Non-Resident Keralites’ Affairs (NORKA) is coordinating the repatriation process.

In a devastating fire tragedy in Kuwait, the number of Keralites who lost their lives has increased to 24. The Department of Non-Resident Keralites’ Affairs (NORKA) confirmed on Thursday that the bodies of the deceased will be repatriated to Kerala by tonight. The post-mortem examinations of the identified bodies have been completed.

Ajith Kolasseri, the acting Chief Executive Officer of NORKA Roots, provided an update on the tragedy. He stated that the death toll among Keralites, initially reported as 12 in the morning and later revised to 19, has now reached 24 based on information from NORKA’s help desk in Kuwait.

Seven Keralites who sustained serious injuries are receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of various hospitals in Kuwait. Kolasseri noted that many of the injured have been discharged from hospitals, but the identities and details of the deceased will only be confirmed after verification by the External Affairs Ministry.

NORKA’s help desk is working closely with the Indian Embassy and the mortuary departments of Kuwaiti hospitals to expedite the paperwork for repatriation. This coordinated effort aims to ensure that the bodies of the victims are returned to their families in Kerala promptly.

The fire, which occurred in a seven-storey building in Mangaf, Ahmadi Governorate, Kuwait, resulted in the deaths of 49 foreign workers, including 42 Indians, and left 50 others injured. The blaze erupted around 4 am on Wednesday, originating in the kitchen while most of the 195 migrant workers were asleep. Thick black smoke from the fire caused many victims to suffocate, according to officials from the Kuwait Interior Ministry and the fire department.

In response to the tragedy, the Kuwaiti government has offered to airlift the mortal remains to India. The Interior Minister of Kuwait announced that the Emir of Kuwait has instructed arrangements for one or two planes to transport the bodies back home.

Established in 1996 by the state government, NORKA aims to address the grievances of non-resident Keralites both in India and abroad, fostering a sustainable partnership with the diaspora. The organization is playing a crucial role in coordinating the repatriation efforts and supporting the affected families during this difficult time.

The incident occurred around 5:30 pm, resulting in injuries to four individuals, including a police constable, as stated by Delhi Fire Services Department officials.

The deceased have not been identified yet, and their bodies have been moved to Babu Jagjeevan Ram Hospital. The injured, identified as Jyoti (42), Divya (20), Mohit Solanki (34), and Karambir, a Delhi police constable, are receiving treatment at Raja Harish Chandra Hospital, according to fire department officials.

</excerpt>

The South Eastern Railway has denied reports that a loco pilot died in the triple train accident in Balasore, adding that he is stable and undergoing treatment in a hospital in Bhubaneswar.

“Some fake news is being spread regarding the death of the loco pilot. The loco pilot is stable and is undergoing treatment in Bhubaneswar,” said Aditya Kumar Chaudhary, CPRO, South Eastern Railway, Balasore. “The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) team is also working at multiple locations including Kharagpur, and Balasore. They are collecting all the information,” he said further.

Giving information about the CBI’s arrival at the site of the crash, Chaudhary said, “Forensic and CBI team is here. They are collecting the evidence and doing their investigation. Railways are providing assistance to them and all possible angles will be probed by CBI during the probe.”

A ten-member CBI team reached the site of the train accident on Tuesday as part of its investigations into the tragedy that took place on 2 June and resulted in the deaths of 275 people.

The CBI is probing the accident that involved two passenger trains and a goods carrier. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday said that the Railway Board had recommended a CBI probe into the tragic accident. The minister had also said that the accident occurred due to a “change in electronic interlocking”.

Dozens of people had to be evacuated after a fire broke out at the exclusive Changfeng Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. Some of the trapped people had to jump out of windows using bedsheets that had been tied together.

Li Zongrong, the deputy chairman of the Fengtai district, added that a nurse, a medical assistant, and a family member also died in the tragedy.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe that the fire was started by welding sparks. The head of the construction team was among the 12 people taken into custody.

A total of 39 people are being treated for burn injuries, the condition of three of them is serious. Rescue teams and medical staff were called in from all parts of the city to overcome the situation. 142 people were evacuated from air conditioning units on the building’s exterior.

Although safety regulations are regularly ignored in China, incidents comparable to the Changfeng fire are scrutinised closely. Construction accidents take place in China on a regular basis due to poor safety regulations, and local officials are being bribed to ignore safety violations.
