Emmy-winning director Rod Holcomb dies at 80

Rod Holcomb, an Emmy-winning director renowned for his work on ER, Lost, China Beach, Wolf, and The Six Million Dollar Man, has passed away at the age of 80. The Directors Guild of America confirmed that Holcomb died on January 24 in Los Angeles after an extended illness.

Holcomb’s significant contributions to television direction were acknowledged by the Directors Guild of America. DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing Holcomb’s impact on television direction and the creative rights of directors. She highlighted his influential role as a pilot director on shows like China Beach and ER, crediting him with bringing a more cinematic style to television through pioneering techniques like the use of Steadicam. Glatter also recognized Holcomb’s commitment to guild service, where he advocated for essential protections allowing television directors to bring their unique visions to life.

In a statement, Glatter said, “We will miss his warm, steadfast presence, and know his caring leadership and directorial mastery will continue inspiring directors for generations. Our deepest condolences to his wife, Jane, and his family.”

Rod Holcomb received four Emmy nominations throughout his illustrious career, with three for ER and one for China Beach. He also earned two DGA nominations for ER, one for China Beach, and another for The Pentagon Papers.

Holcomb’s extensive directorial portfolio includes episodes of Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Ice, Agent X, Blood & Oil, The Mentalist, Chicago Fire, The Good Wife, Numb3rs, The West Wing, Justified, NCIS: Los Angeles, Elementary, The Equalizer, Rizzoli & Isles, CSI: Miami, and The Quest, among others.

He is survived by his wife, Jane, son Josh, daughter Natasha, and five grandchildren.

New Mexico: 3 dead, five injured in shooting during bike rally

Shooting at New Mexico Motorcycle Rally Leaves Three Dead, Multiple Injured According to Red River Mayor Linda Calhoun, a shooting occurred at a motorcycle rally in the Red River area of New Mexico on Saturday, resulting in three fatalities and several injuries, as reported by the media.

Mayor Calhoun stated that five individuals were injured, with one airlifted to a Denver hospital, as confirmed by the New Mexico State Police. Initial reports from the police mentioned two deaths and six injuries.

All individuals involved in the shooting, identified as members of biker gangs, are now in police custody, according to Mayor Calhoun. The New Mexico State Police assured that the scene is secure and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

The incident took place during the Red River Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally, an annual event that attracts tens of thousands of participants to the town’s Main Street for Memorial Day weekend, according to media reports.

Other injured individuals were transported to Holy Cross Hospital in Taos and the University of New Mexico Health in Albuquerque for treatment. Mayor Calhoun emphasized the swift response of law enforcement, with the first officer arriving within 30 seconds of receiving the call.

The New Mexico State Police has dispatched additional officers to Red River. The investigation is ongoing, and an active crime scene has been established, leading local authorities to request the closure of businesses on Sunday until the investigation is concluded and the crime scene is cleared. Following the shooting, Taos, located approximately 40 miles from Red River, implemented a curfew until May 28 at 4 a.m., prohibiting the sale of alcohol in retail stores, bars, and other establishments, as per the proclamation issued by Mayor Pascualito Maestas.

4 dead, 1 injured in road accident in Mathura

On Wednesday, at least 4 people were killed while another was seriously injured after a car they were travelling in rammed into a roadside tree in Mathura, as per the police information.

According to the police, the victims were travelling in a car which reportedly collided with a tree at Baldeo Road area in Mathura. There were 5 people on board when the incident took place, they said. They were identified as Ankit, Yogesh – both residents of Rida Mohalla of Baldeo, Achal and Akash from Anghai village, and Bharat alias Rocky.

“Prima facie it appeared that the vehicle driver tried to avoid an oncoming motorist and ended up colliding with the tree near Pilkhuni village,” officials said, while adding that four of them died on the spot. Officials were however not sure about who was driving the vehicle. The injured person was taken to district hospital, while the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination, as per the police information.

3 dead after consuming liquor in Chhattisgarh

As per the police information on Monday, three people, including an army man, died allegedly after consuming country-made liquor in the Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh.

The incident occurred this morning at Rogda village within the jurisdiction of Navagarh police station. The deceased individuals have been identified as Paras Sahu, Nandlal Kashyap (a soldier), and Satish Kashyap.

According to a police officer, the trio became unconscious after consuming the alcohol that Satish Kashyap had purchased for the “Harprasad” celebration in their village.

They were immediately taken to a hospital in Navagarh but were subsequently declared dead. In response to the incident report, the Navagarh police promptly arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. The bodies have been sent for autopsy.

Vijay Agrawal, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for Janjgir-Champa, stated that the exact cause of death will be determined following the investigation.

He further mentioned that a team of doctors and experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory were dispatched to the location for further examination.

Class 12 student’s body found in Rohini’s drain

A 18-year-old woman, reported missing earlier this week, was found dead in a drain in the early hours of Sunday in the Aman Vihar area of Delhi’s Rohini, police said.

Delhi Police has confirmed that the victim was a 12th-grade student named Saraswati. The authorities recovered the body, which was subsequently sent to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital (SGM) in Delhi’s Mangolpuri area for a post-mortem. Once the post-mortem was completed, the victim’s remains were returned to her family.

“This is the third suicide incident reported from Delhi,” stated the officials.
Speaking to the media, Santosh Thakur, the uncle of the deceased, claimed that Saraswati had failed in two subjects in the recently announced results of the class 12 board exams and was upset.

Fatal shootings claim lives of five individuals, including two women, in Karachi

Five people including two women were killed in separate firing incidents in Karachi on Sunday, Pakistan-based ARY News reported.

Multiple shooting incidents occurred in different areas of Karachi, including Memon Goth, Surjani Town, Defence, and Municipal Town. According to police officers, two individuals lost their lives when unidentified assailants opened fire at a car near a petrol pump in Gulshan-e-Surjani. The victims have been identified as Babar and Naseem. In a separate incident, a man named Muhammad Arsalan was fatally shot at a wedding ceremony in Malir Saudabad. The body of Muhammad Arsalan was subsequently transferred to Jinnah Hospital, as reported by ARY News.

Meanwhile, a woman died in an accidentally fired shot in Karachi. The incident was reported in Defence Phase 6, Khayaban-e-Halal. The woman was identified as Safia.
Another woman was shot dead in a firing near Bismillah Chowk near Gulshan-e-Ghazi, Baldia. The deceased was identified as Noreen whose body was transferred to a civil hospital, as per ARY News. The police have gathered evidence from the crime scene and launched an investigation.

Six killed after bus collides with auto in Kanchipuram

On Thursday, six people were killed when a state roadways bus rammed into an auto-rickshaw in Tamil Nadu’s Kanchipuram.

The incident occurred on East Coast Road in Manamai village, near Mamallapuram, on Thursday afternoon.

Minor found dead at Malda in West Bengal

On Wednesday, a man was arrested for allegedly killing a minor girl in West Bengal’s Malda district, officials said.

According to police, the arrest was made after the accused confessed to his crime during interrogation. As per the information received from police team, the girl’s body was found in a field in Ujirpur village in Akandaberia in Kalichak police station area on Tuesday. Later, police reached the spot and recovered the dead body and sent it for post-mortem. Officials also visited visited crime spot. On suspicion, we detained 3 persons, during interrogation, one of them confessed to his crime, Pradip Kumar Yadav, SP said.

“The accused revealed during questioning that the victim was seeing someone else and insisted on getting married to her. The accused was already married. The accused decided to get rid of her after continuing to pressure him into marriage, so he killed her, the SP said.

Following the incident, a number of BJP members protested and demanded that the culprits be brought to justice. Additionally, they obstructed Manglabari Bulbuli More’s state highway. To stabilise the situation, a sizable police force had to be stationed nearby.

Death toll rises to 413 in Sudan fighting: WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) claimed that children are paying a high price in the current Sudan crisis, with at least nine reportedly dead in the fighting and more than 50 seriously injured, according to Turkish news agency Anadolu. WHO stated that so far, 413 people have died in the ongoing conflict.

At a UN press briefing, WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris stated that 413 people have died and 3,551 have been injured in the fighting, according to estimates from the Sudanese government. The conflict involves the nation’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been going on for a while.

She claimed that 11 attacks on medical facilities had been confirmed, including 10 since 15 April.

“The Sudanese Ministry of Health reports that 20 healthcare establishments have stopped working.” Additionally, 12 healthcare facilities are at risk of closing, according to data from the Ministry of Health, said Harris.

According to the WHO spokeswoman, this has an impact on “all those people who need care, and this is not only the people who have been injured in terrible fighting but also the people who were needing treatment before and are continuing treatment.”

At the same press conference, UNICEF spokesperson James Elder said that “clearly, as always, the fighting takes a devastating toll on children.” “As of right now, there have been reports of at least 50 injuries and the killing of nine children.” “Those numbers will continue to rise as long as the fighting continues,” he added.

Elder said large numbers of people are trapped and do not have access to electricity, as Anadolu reported.

Sudan crisis: Death toll rises to 97 as fighting continues

The death toll has gone over 97 in the fierce fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as per the Washington Post, which cites the Sudanese Doctors Union.

As of early today, 97 civilians had perished in the ongoing battle and more than 600 had been injured.

A hospital in the southern part of the capital was hit by stray artillery on Monday morning, the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors reported, causing “a state of terror and panic,” but no injuries were reported among the personnel or patients.

Eyewitnesses in the capital city of Khartoum told a leading news channel that fighting violence intensified after Sunday morning prayers and continued into the night with loud noises and explosions. Battles reportedly have been taking place hundreds of kilometres away in the eastern city of Port Sudan.

The armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been competing for power as political factions negotiate the formation of a transitional government after a 2021 military coup. The RSF, led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, and the military, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, disagree about how the paramilitary force should be integrated into the armed forces and who should be in charge of overseeing that process.

The military, 18 months after its coup, has pledged to hand over power this month to a civilian-led administration. However, the conflict between General Al-Burhan and General Hamdan, also known as Hemeti, has dominated the process.

The two generals are not ready to leave any stone unturned in criticising each other over the last few months; they have sent armoured vehicles, arms, and ammunition to resist against each other.

Meanwhile, three United Nations World Food Programme staff members died on Saturday, and following the casualties in the clash, the UN agency has temporarily stopped all operations.

Retired Professor Couple found dead in Bihar residence

In a heart wrenching incident, a professor couple was found dead with several injury marks on their bodies at their home in Bihar’s Arrah city in Bhojpur district.

As per the Police, in their first investigation, the pair was first attacked on their heads and ten killed with a sharp object. The Police found the bodies on Monday night. The deceased couple is identified as Mahendra Singh, 70 and Pushpa Singh, 65, belonged to the Agni village, under Nasriganj police station.

The duo used to live alone in their house after the retirement. Singh departed from his position as dean of Veer Kunwar Singh University, and his wife had retired as a professor of psychology from a women’s college.

The authorities are working to find the murderers and determine the motive for the suspected killings.

A police team led by Bhojpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Pramod Kumar Yadav and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Himanshu arrived at the house within the Nawada police station’s boundaries and started their inquiry after obtaining information.

“We are looking at the mobile surveillance of the deceased and CCTV footage of the area to solve the double murder case. With these we can acertain the time of the incident and who all were present in the house at the time of the murder and how they entered the house,” Police said.
Hira Singh, the younger brother of the deceased Mahendra Singh said, “I met my brother on January 26 last time at his house. My eldest brother called me today and informed me that both the mobile phones of my brother and sister-in-law were unreachable since yesterday.”
Singh said that upon reaching his elder brother’s house, he was told by the police of the heinous crime.

Youth found dead in Pune’s Dhayari

A tragic occurrence apparently occurred on Saturday late at night when the manager of a restaurant in Pune’s Dhayari was slain while returning home from work. The incident was happened on Saturday.

Police said, the incident is being probed and search is on for the accused who are absconding.

The deceased has been identified as Bharat Bhagwan Kadam, 24, a Dhayari resident and native of the Parbhani area. He had been employed at the restaurant for the last five to six years.

According to a complaint filed by Prakash Bhagwan Kadam, brother of the deceased, at around 11:45 pm, Bharat closed the restaurant and was on going home on his motorcycle.

Jayant Rajurkar, senior police inspector (crime) at Sinhgad road police station, said, “When Bharat was near Dhareshwar temple, the accused stopped his motorcycle and attacked him with sharp weapons. In which he suffered serious injuries on his head and stomach.’’

Rajurkar said, “His motorcycle, wallet and other valuable items were not stolen. Murder might be an outcome of previous rivalry.”

When police night marshals learned of the event, they sped off to the scene. Police took him to the hospital and had him pronounced dead before they even got there.

To determine the identity of the accused, police are reviewing local CCTV footage.

At the Sinhgad Road Police Station, a case has been filed under Section 302 against unidentified individuals (Punishment for murder).

Two children abducted from Rajasthan found dead in Delhi

The 13- and 8-year-old brothers, who were abducted on October 15 from Bhiwadi in Rajasthan’s Alwar district, were found stabbed to death in New Delhi on Tuesday, while their third sibling was freed the next day after their kidnappers sought an eight-lakh-rupee ransom.

Mahaveer Teli and Manjha Khushwa were named as the kidnappers by police superintendent (Bhiwadi) Shantanu Kumar Singh, who also stated that they were being held. He reported that the third boy, a 7-year-old boy, had been brought to a children’s home in Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi.

Singh said the abductors called Gyan Singhwer, the father of the boys, who is a vegetable vendor, on Monday and demanded ₹8 lakh. They murdered the two when they started crying and dumped their bodies.

Singh said they traced the accused on Monday night on the basis of the mobile number they used to make the ransom call. The accused first told police that they killed the three and dumped their bodies in a jungle behind the Qutub Minar Metro Station. A police team found the bodies of the two children.

Singh said Teli and Khushwa, both in their 30s, are from Bihar and were Singhwer’s neighbours. “The accused are known to be drug addicts. One of them runs a small shop, while the other works at a factory.”

He said the accused slit the throats of the two boys and added they were awaiting their postmortem reports. “Further investigation into the matter is on.”

Chandhan Chowdhary, deputy commissioner (south) of the Delhi Police, claimed that they were made aware of the kidnapping when their Rajasthani counterparts reported it.

He stated that the accused brought the children to Daruheda first, then to Delhi, and that “a team of Bhiwadi crime branch arrived to Mehrauli [south Delhi] and conducted a search.”

Iran’s Evin prison costs 4 lives, 61 injured

At least four people died and 61 were injured in the fire at Tehran’s Evin prison on Saturday.

According to the judiciary, several detainees started fighting, which caused security and medical personnel to intervene and put an end to the fight. 70 convicts who were trapped in the fire were taken to safety by the security. 10 more people were hospitalised while 51 of the injured received prompt medical attention.

Reports say, the four prisoners who lost their lives to the fire were among those who were imprisoned on the charge of theft.
The situation at the Evin prison returned to normal conditions in the early hours of Sunday and prisoners were allowed to make phone calls with their families.

The state media outlet, in the initial stage, claimed that clashes inside Evin Prison on Saturday have nothing to do with the recent unrest in the country.

It said the ward of prisoners incarcerated on security charges is separate from the ward of bandits and prisoners serving their jail terms on financial charges where the fire incident happened.
The fire comes as Iran continues to be rocked by its most intense unrest in decades. In September, Mahsa Amini died after she was detained by the country’s morality police for apparently not wearing her hijab properly.

Iranian authorities have since unleashed a brutal crackdown on demonstrators, who have united around a range of grievances with the country’s authoritarian regime.
Hundreds of those detained during the protests have reportedly been sent to Evin.
The United States said Iran is fully responsible for the safety of wrongfully detained citizens in Evin Prison.

Bihar cop shot by criminal, dies

A police constable on his way back from searching for a liquor smuggler in Bihar’s Siwan district was shot dead by a crowd around 2 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to police, the shooting occurred while the police team was returning home after following up on some leads about liquor smuggling in Siwan’s Gyaspur village.

The team came to a halt when they noticed a group of four or five people sitting on the roadside on the outskirts of the village. When the team asked them to identify themselves, they attempted to flee, according to police.

“When the team went after them, the criminals opened fire and escaped,” said Rajesh Kumar, in-charge station house officer of Siswan police station.

Constable Valmiki Kumar Yadav (39), a Patna rural resident, was taken to the Siwan Sadar hospital with gunshot wounds but died before arriving, according to doctors.

According to police, a local resident, Mohammad Sirajuddin (55), who stepped out of his house after hearing the shooting outside, was also injured by a bullet. He was also admitted to the hospital and is now safe.

A special task force (STF) team has been dispatched to Gyaspur village to conduct raids and apprehend the criminals, according to police.

Jitendra Singh Gangwar, the additional director general of police (headquarters), stated that the Siwan superintendent of police (SP) and the Saran range deputy inspector general (DIG) are camping at the scene and overseeing the action.

An investigation has started and raids are being conducted to nab the culprits. No arrests have been made so far,” Gangwar added.

According to a police officer, the constable’s death has sparked deep resentment among the force, which wants the police leadership to order a crackdown on criminals in the district.

6 family members found dead in Ambala

A shocking accident took place in Ambala’s Balana village where six members of a family were found dead on Friday.

In the morning hours of Friday, the family was mysteriously found dead after having dinner last night.

Meanwhile, a suicide note has been recovered from the crime spot.

All deceased have been identified as Sangat Ram, Sukhwinder Singh, Mahindra Kaur, Reena, Ashu, and Jassi (daughters of Sukhwinder Singh).

“Six members including two children of the same family found dead. A Crime team has been called to the scene. A suicide note has been recovered. Further investigation underway,” Deputy superintendent of police, Ambala, Joginder Sharma said.

Earlier on 17 August, six members were also found dead of the same family at their home in the Sidhra area of Jammu. Later they were shifted to Jammu’s Government Medical College and Hospital.

“Six members of a family were found dead at their residence in the Sindhra area of Jammu. Details awaited,” J&K police said.

However, further investigation into both the matter is underway.
