Sanjay Singh Accuses BJP of Playing Games While Delhi CM Opts To Be Silent On Swati Maliwal Issue

As Arvind Kejriwal arrived at the venue for his press conference with Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav, reporters attempted to inquire about the alleged assault on AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal. However, the AAP leader declined to respond to any questions.

When the matter was brought up during the press conference, Akhilesh Yadav said, “There are other issues that are more important than this.”

Sanjay Singh, an AAP Rajya Sabha MP, intervened to support his party. He said that the BJP was to blame for Swati Maliwal being physically restrained and mistreated by the Delhi police during the wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar, as well as for politicising the matter.

“Aam Aadmi Party is our family. The party has taken a clear stand on this issue…Can they answer on the case of Swati Maliwal, when she went to fight for justice for women wrestlers at Jantar Mantar, they made the police drag and beat her up. Don’t play political games on this,” Singh stated during a joint press conference with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday.

In May last year, during the wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar, Maliwal, who was then the Delhi Commission for Women chief, alleged that the Delhi police forcefully took her to a police station while she was attempting to meet the wrestlers.

“When wrestler daughters were fighting at the Jantar Mantar, the same Swati Maliwal, who was the chairperson of the Women’s Commission at that time, had gone to support them at night, the police dragged her and beat her,” Singh reiterated during the press conference.

Singh also raised concerns about alleged atrocities against women under the BJP regime and questioned the Prime Minister’s silence on such issues.

“The entire nation is saddened even today when a Kargil warrior’s wife was paraded naked in Manipur, several women were assaulted, and the Prime Minister remained silent. Prajwal Revanna raped and brutalized thousands of women, even those who were of the age of his mother, and the Prime Minister says that he (Prajwal Revanna) will give strength to India and people should vote for him. He is the future of India. He is made to flee by the BJP. The Prime Minister was also silent on the Kuldeep Sengar-Hathras case in Uttar Pradesh,” Singh asserted.

Earlier, the BJP accused Arvind Kejriwal of shielding his aide Bibhav Kumar, who was allegedly involved in the assault on Maliwal. The BJP shared a picture of Kejriwal’s aide with him at the Lucknow airport and questioned why no action had been taken against him despite an assurance by Sanjay Singh.

“72 hours No FIR on Bibhav Kumar instead Kejriwal is protecting him! Roaming around with him. It is clear the attack on Swati Maliwal was done at the behest of Kejriwal himself. Now she is being pressured to keep silent or change her story as is evident from statements of Naveen Jaihind & Nitin Tyagi,” said BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala.

It was alleged that CM Kejriwal’s aide had assaulted the former chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women at the former’s residence. After initially maintaining silence on the matter, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh stated that the CM had taken due cognizance of the incident, and strict action would follow.

No Complaint Received Yet: Delhi Police Over Alleged Assault Of Swati Maliwal

The Delhi Police have recently declared on Monday, that they have not received any complaints regarding the alleged assault on Aam Aadmi Party MP Swati Maliwal at CM’s residence

Recently speaking to ANI, Delhi North DCP Manoj Kumar Meena recently clarified that she (Swati Maliwal) indeed came to Civil Lines police station, but she didn’t register any complaint and just simply left.

Recounting the incident, the DCP stated

“At around 9.34 am, we received a PCR call wherein the caller said that she had been assaulted inside the CM residence. Accordingly, local police responded to the call and SHO and the local police reached the spot. After some time, MP Swati Maliwal came to the police station Civil Lines. She left the police station without giving any complaints. In this matter till now, no complaints have been received.” said DCP Meena.

He further revealed that no official statement was issued on this alleged incident. Neither by CM’s office, MP Maliwal and the ruling party.

Meanwhile, BJP attacked AAP and Arvind Kejriwal following this incident.

BJP Leader Amit Malviya also pointed out absence of MP Maliwal’s absence at the time of Kejriwal’s arrest in March this year.

“AAP RS MP and former DCW chief Swati Maliwal alleges that Delhi CM’s PA assaulted her. A call was made from the Delhi CM’s house. Remember, Swati Maliwal had maintained radio silence on Kejriwal’s arrest. She was not even in India at that time and didn’t return for a long time.” said Malviya.

What Exactly Happened?

AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal has recently went to Civil lines police station and made an allegation that Delhi’s CM Arvind Kejriwal’s PA assaulted her at CM’s official residence.

As per the officials, Maliwal called PCR after purported verbal fight. They also announced that two calls were at 10 in the morning.

However, when the police reached the place, no immediate reaction was given by AAP party or from CMs residence.

Aam Aadmi Party nominates DCW chief Swati Maliwal for Rajya Sabha

AAP’s Political Affairs Committee on Friday nominated senior party member and head of the Delhi Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal, for the January 19 Rajya Sabha elections in Delhi. The election of new Rajya Sabha MPs from Delhi will take place on January 19, as the terms of three current members are coming to an end this month. Sanjay Singh, Sushil Kumar Gupta, and Narain Dass Gupta are the three members who will be retiring on January 27. But Sushil Kumar Gupta has stated his intention to shift his focus to Haryana’s electoral politics, and both ND Gupta and imprisoned senior leader Sanjay Singh will be re-nominated, the party said.

ND Gupta is the party treasurer and Sushil Gupta is the AAP President of the Haryana unit. The state is expected to go to polls later this year.
“Chaired by AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, the committee decided to endorse two existing members for re-nomination, whereas Sushil Kumar Gupta expressed his intent to redirect his focus towards the electoral politics of Haryana,” the party said.
Swati Maliwal is a women’s rights activist and the current Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW). Before joining DCW, Maliwal worked as the advisor to the Chief Minister of Delhi on public grievances. Maliwal was a core member of the Indian Against Corruption movement.

Maliwal has been linked to a number of campaigns and movements that support gender equality, call for tougher legislation, and fight violence against women. Meanwhile, party leader Sanjay Singh was permitted to sign re-nomination paperwork from jail on Thursday by a Delhi court. Leading Aam Aadmi Party figure Sanjay Singh was detained by the Enforcement Directorate on October 4, 2023, on suspicion of money laundering in connection with the Excise policy case.

DCW chief Maliwal issued notice to Delhi police after 85-year-old woman raped in Shakarpur

Chief of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Swati Maliwal issued a notice to the Delhi Police on Friday in the alleged rape of an 85-year-old lady in Delhi’s Shakarpur.

“The Delhi Commission of Women has received information of rape with an 85-year-old woman. The Commission has been informed that the woman lives in a slum in Shakarpur area of Delhi. She has informed that she lives alone in a jhuggi after the death of her husband”, the notice read.

“She alleged that on September 1, at 4:00 am, a person forcibly entered her jhuggi and raped her. She has also informed that the accused punched her face, cut her lip by a blade, and tried to strangulate her. There are injuries all over her face and private parts as well”, the notice added.

DCW chief stated, “This is a very serious matter. Please provide the following information to the Commission: Copy of FIR registered in the matter, details of accused arrested in the matter, steps taken by the Delhi Police to provide security to the woman, whether a list of elderly people living alone in your jurisdiction has been maintained by the police? Please inform the steps that have been taken to protect them, detailed action taken report in the matter.”

Delhi minor rape: DCW chief Swati Maliwal slept at hospital in protest

Swati Maliwal, the head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), spent Monday night in the hospital after being barred from meeting the 16-year-old girl who was sexually abused by a senior Delhi government employee.

Maliwal accused the Delhi Police of hooliganism on Tuesday morning, saying, “They are not allowing me to meet the girl or her mother. I’m not sure what the cops are trying to hide from me.”

“According to reports, the head of the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights was allowed to speak with the girl’s mother. Why is it that the NCPCR chairwoman is allowed to meet with the mother but not the DCW chief?,” Maliwal questioned.

Taking to X, formally know as Twitter, Maliwal wrote, “Since 12 noon yesterday, I am sitting outside the hospital to meet the victim girl or her family. Slept outside the hospital at night. The NCPCR can be introduced to the girl’s mother, so why have I been asked to stop? What are you trying to hide?”

For several months, the girl had been sexually assaulted, which resulted in her pregnancy. Premoday Khakha (51) and his wife Seema Rani (50) were arrested by the Delhi Police on Monday.

“In the case of sexual assault with a minor, we have arrested two persons. One of them is Premoday Khakha, 51 years old, is a Deputy Director in the Department of Women and Child Development of GNCT and the second accused is his wife, Seema Rani, 50 years old,” DCP (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said.

According to police, the kid lived with the accused in Burari from October 2020 to February 2021, following the death of her father, who was also a Delhi government official.

Manipur horrific incidnet: Swati Maliwal meet with families of victims

Swati Maliwal, the head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), met with the relatives of the two women paraded naked in Manipur on May 4, a video of which went viral last week.

“I met the family of the daughters who were brutalized in Manipur… “Their tears kept me awake for a long time,” Maliwal tweeted, along with a video of their connection. “No one has yet come to meet them,” she continued.

Maliwal was seen in the video hugging and consoling a woman from the victim’s family. Maliwal lashed out at Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh and other government officials, questioning why no one had come to see the victims until now.

“I met the families of Manipur’s two brutalized daughters.” While serving as a soldier, a girl’s husband guarded the country’s boundaries. He told me that no one had come to meet him till today, and that I was the first to approach him,” she tweeted.

“Met the mother of the other girl as well. When I can reach here without security then why hasn’t the CM or the rest of the administration come till now?” she added.

Following her meeting with the victims’ families, the women’s panel’s chief visited the Moirang relief camp, where she noted that people, including women and children, are living in “difficult” conditions.

Maliwal landed in the ethnically divided state on Sunday afternoon and stated that she is not coming Manipur to engage in politics but to help the people. Maliwal stated that she will request that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani visit the state to see the people’s plight.

She further stated that she has also urged the CM of Manipur for an urgent meeting during her visit. “Sought time from Manipur CM. Will meet him and request him to come along to visit the sexual assault survivors,” she tweeted on Sunday.

‘Not here to do politics’: DCW chief Swati Maliwal arrives in Imphal despite Manipur govt asking to postpone visit

The head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Swati Maliwal, arrived in Imphal on Sunday to meet with victims of sexual assault after being asked by the state government to delay her trip there a day earlier. She made an appeal to the government to let her do that.

“I will directly go to the CM’s Office. I want to meet chief minister, N Biren Singh. I want to meet the sexual abuse survivors and see if they have got legal aid, counselling or any compensation,” Maliwal said while speaking to ANI after landing at Imphal airport.
She also appealed to the state government saying that she has reached there to help the people of Manipur.
“Please allow me to do that. I have not come here to do politics. I request PM Modi and the Women and Child Development Minister (Smriti Irani) to visit Manipur. I will also try and meet the Governor,” Maliwal said.

A video of two women being paraded naked by a mob surfaced on social media a few days prior to this visit. The DCW chairperson claimed earlier, before departing for Imphal, that the state government had asked her to postpone her visit because the state’s law and order situation “is not good.”

“I wrote to the Manipur Govt that I want to visit the state and meet the survivors of sexual assault. I have received a letter from the Manipur government where they have suggested that I postpone my visit as the law and order situation in the state is not good,” Maliwal said while speaking to ANI.
The DCW chief further said that she has decided to visit Manipur, and appealed to the Manipur government not to stop her.
“Manipur government wants me to reconsider my decision. I gave it a lot of thought and decided to visit Manipur. I am appealing to the state government not to stop me but make arrangements so that I can meet the sexual assault survivors and provide help,” Maliwal said earlier.

Maliwal further asserted that numerous Manipuri girls had fled to Delhi due to assault and violence, adding, “I want to discuss these things with the CM and have sought his time.” Maliwal also sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, pleading with him to act quickly to stop the violence in Manipur, safeguard the safety and dignity of all its residents, and help bring the perpetrators of the violence to justice.

Delhi: DCW issues notice to police over brutal killing of 16-year-old girl

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) issued a notice to the city police on Monday regarding the alleged murder of a minor girl in Outer Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy by her boyfriend, a 20-year-old man.

“In Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy, a minor innocent doll was stabbed and then crushed with a stone. The spirits of the criminals in Delhi are high. Issuing notice to the police. All limits have been crossed. I have never seen anything more horrifying than this in my career of so many years,” tweeted Swati Maliwal, the DCW chairperson.

The head of the women’s panel added that the national capital has become “extremely unsafe for women and girls,” and urged the Central government to convene a “high-level meeting” with Union home minister Amit Shah and the city’s lieutenant governor VK Saxena.

She further added that “A 16-year-old girl was stabbed 40-50 times and then was hit by a stone multiple times after which she died. All this has been captured on CCTV. Several people saw this but did not pay heed. Delhi has become extremely unsafe for women and girls. I appeal to the central govt to call a high-level meeting with Union home minister, Delhi lieutenant governor.”

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly stabbed to death by her 20-year-old boyfriend in a horrific incident. The girl had planned to attend a friend’s son’s birthday party, according to police. In a horrific attack that included bludgeoning her with a stone, the accused intercepted her and stabbed her multiple times.

DCW seeks report from police, DU on Sexual harassment during college fest

Following the reports of alleged sexual harassment of girls during college fests, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal on Tuesday asked the police, Delhi University and the colleges concerned to submit an Action Taken Report by April 18.

In the latest incident on March 28, some outsiders entered the Indraprastha College for Women during a fest and allegedly harassed the girls. It was further alleged that the boys even tried to break into the hostel girls studying at the college.

The DCW issued recommendations to Delhi Police, Delhi University, and the college regarding the sexual harassment of girls at the college’s annual fest, who allegedly scaled the college’s boundary wall.

“The Delhi Commission for Women took sue mom cognizance of the recent case of sexual harassment with several girls in the college fest at IP college, Delhi University. It was reported that on 28.03.2023, men barged into IP college during a fest and molested several girls. They even allegedly shouted slogans, “Miranda IP dono hamara. Miranda nahi choda to IP bhi nahi chodenge,” read a notice by the women’s panel.

“Further, the Commission observed that after the IP college incident, several girl students protested for many days against the alleged apathy of IP college officials and the failure of the system in protecting them,” it read.
Earlier, on April 3, Maliwal summoned Delhi Police and Delhi University officials to appear before the commission.

According to the official notice, the police, DU and the college authorities have to appear before the panel with a list of guidelines and the mechanisms that they have put in place to ensure that there is no recurrence of such incidents.

“NOW THEREFORE you are hereby summoned to appear before the Commission for this purpose aforementioned on 06/0412023 at 02.00 PM. If you fail to comply with this order without lawful excuse, you will be subjected to the consequences of non-attendance as provided in law,” read the official notice from DCW.

“In 2020, some people forced their way into Gargi College premises during a fest and molested the girl students. Again, in 2022, some male students forced their way into Miranda College and harassed the girl students. These incidents are emerging repeatedly in colleges of Delhi University which raise serious concerns regarding the safety of girl students therein, especially during a college fest,” read the notice.

‘I was sexually assaulted by my father’: DCW Chief Swati Maliwal

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Saturday narrated her childhood ordeal and said that she was sexually assaulted by her father when she was a child.Maliwal took cognizance of viral videos of harassment on Holi and said that the DCW issued a notice to the Delhi Police to probe the videos and nab the perpetrators.

Speaking to reporters after the DCW International Women’s Day Awards ceremony here, Maliwal said she faced abuse till the time she was in Class 4.

“I was sexually assaulted by my father when I was a child. I was very small at that time. My father used to beat me up and I used to hide under the bed to save myself,” she said.

Narrating her ordeal, Maliwal said that her father would grab her by her braid and slam her against the wall, leading to severe bleeding. “This happened till I was in Class 4,” she recalled.

“My father was an alcoholic. When heavily drunk, he harassed me on many occasions. The brutal beatings that I have got, it is really, really scary.

“The fact that I am a strong and vocal voice against crimes against women today – a lot of it stems from my own childhood trauma…if channelled in the right direction, the pain, the anger and the trauma help you understand other people’s pain better and helps you work for other people,” she said.

She said her mother, who herself was a victim of domestic violence and extreme abuse at the hands of her father, tried her level best to protect her.

“Then there came a day when she (mother) felt that there was absolutely no way out. She couldn’t take it any longer and she separated from my father and that is when my life started improving. I started feeling more secure since we started living with our grandparents. I started feeling more secure but at the same time, it was very traumatic and it still is,” she said.

Maliwal said her mother is a very strong woman and taught her to fight her battles.

“I think when you go through that kind of pain you understand what one goes through when one faces such abuse from one’s own parent…. It happens with so many people. It’s a mark that I cannot erase forever,” she said.

But what made her speak up at a public forum at this point?

“I was feeling very emotional because we gave awards to 90 very inspiring people. Many of them overcame their childhood traumas to really shine and achieve a lot in their lives. I feel people holding positions and those who are public figures should talk about such things.

“I think these should not be kept hidden. I think I have reached a stage in life where I feel that I have healed to quite an extent, and I do feel comfortable to talk about it. I understand it’s still a very taboo topic and I will be subjected to n number of trolling but despite that I still decided to do it,” she said.

The DCW chief said she wants to give a message to all girls who are being subjected to any form of incest that they must speak up and fight it out. If they are able to struggle, they will be able to come out of it, she asserted.

“I am a human being and I have a vulnerable side. I fight for women and girls and that is my passion. I wanted to share with everyone where that passion came from. It’s really unfortunate that everyday an incest case is reported in the national capital. It does make my blood boil,” she added.

Recently, actor and National Commission for Women (NCW) member Khushbu Sundar said she was sexually abused by her father at the age of 8.

Delhi: HC stays proceedings against DCW chief Swati Maliwal

Delhi HC on Friday, 10 March, stayed the proceedings against Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal in connection with a corruption case. The HC of Delhi stayed the proceedings against her till the next date of hearing.

In December 2022, Maliwal had challenged the charges framed against her by the trial court under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The DCW chief is alleged to have abused her official position by illegally appointing acquaintances between 2015-2016. During the trial, Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani stayed the proceedings against her till July 26, which is the next date of hearing.

The respondents were directed to file a status report within 6 weeks. Meanwhile, Senior advocate Rebbeca John, who appeared for Maliwal, submitted that there are no allegations of her receiving any pecuniary advantage in lieu of the appointment in question.

Asking “whether nepotism is an offence under the POC Act”, Justice Bhambhani observed that the essential ingredient of receiving any pecuniary advantage is missing in the matter, which requires close consideration.

In 2022, the trial court had framed charges against Swati Maliwal, Promila Gupta, Sarika Chaudhary and Farheen Malick. It had said there is sufficient material to frame charges against the accused.
