She infiltrated Mumbai’s underworld, gaining a reputation. Despite a daring plot to kill him, she was killed in 1994 by Dawood’s men.
</excerpt>

Among all the arch enemies of Dawood Ibrahim, a notorious crime lord of India who is accused of masterminding the 1993 Bombay blasts and connections to global terrorism, one person shines out, who is shrouded in mystery-a mysterious lady, known as Sapna Didi, whose tale is chilling as well as inspiring.

Who was ‘Sapna Didi’?

Sapna Didi, who was born Ashraf, was an altogether womanly figure and has been described as a gendered version of a “femme fatale” and also of an “avenging angel.” Born into a traditionally conservative Muslim family in Mumbai, the life Ashraf had lived took an altogether different turn when she married Mehmood Khan, a gangster. Thinking that Mehmood Khan was just another “good person,” Ashraf saw Mehmood brutally killed at the Mumbai airport-for questioning Dawood Ibrahim’s command.

This disaster transformed Ashraf into a fiery crusader of vengeance. Now known as Sapna, she began to meet Dawood’s competitor, gangster Hussain Ustara, who would instruct her on how to shoot and how to target D-Company.

Ustara mentored her into becoming an influential figure in the underworld. She and her mentor intercepted weapon consignments intended for Dawood’s operations, thus disrupting Dawood’s business ventures. As Zaidi puts it, “In Mumbai, Sapna was slowly gaining notice as the person responsible for disrupting Dawood’s businesses… creating unprecedented fear in the minds of Dawood’s many henchmen.”

It was stark—the burqa fell away for jeans and shirts, she rode the bike easily with guns. A small band of young followers soon emerged to encourage her bold act. She began being called ‘Sapna Didi’ while spewing malice towards Dawood.

Failed Assassination Plot

In the early 1990s, Sapna concocted a bold plan to murder Dawood in the India-Pakistan cricket match in Sharjah. She chose a rare public appearance by Dawood in the VIP enclosure to strike. Her men were planning to create a ruckus and attack Dawood with whatever makeshift weapons they could lay their hands on-from broken bottles to umbrellas.

Sadly, the plan leaked out. In 1994, Dawood’s goons attacked Sapna in her home in Mumbai, stabbing her 22 times. Crying for help, terrified neighbors did nothing to intervene, so she died before being taken to the hospital.

Sapna Didi’s life and mission remain largely unknown today. No photographs or detailed records exist of the woman who dared to challenge one of India’s most dangerous criminals. As Zaidi’s work suggests, she was a courageous and determined individual, whose story exemplifies both the power of vengeance and the price of defiance.

</excerpt>

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted NCP leader Nawab Malik permanent bail in a money laundering case. The court had previously granted him interim medical bail due to deteriorating health conditions.

A bench comprising Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma made the interim bail absolute, subject to conditions imposed by the special court. The bail will remain in effect until the disposal of Malik’s regular bail plea before the Bombay High Court.

Malik’s counsel informed the court of his client’s severe health issues, including the collapse of one lung. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), represented by Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, did not oppose the conversion of interim bail to permanent bail.

Malik has been in and out of hospital since his arrest in February 2022. The ED accused him of usurping a property in Kurla with the help of Dawood Ibrahim’s sister, Haseena Parkar, between 1999 and 2006. The agency alleges that the proceeds from this property were used to fund terrorist activities.

The NCP leader has consistently maintained his innocence and challenged the ED’s allegations.

The childhood house of renowned terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, as well as three other family-owned homes in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri, will be auctioned off on Friday. The agricultural assets located in Mumbake village will be auctioned off in Mumbai on January 5. Authorities have seized these assets under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act (SAFEMA). This marks the auction of the 11th property linked to Dawood or his family in the past nine years.

Details of the Auctioned Properties

The auction includes Dawood Ibrahim’s childhood home, symbolizing a significant chapter of his early life. Additionally, three other agricultural properties in Mumbake village are part of the auction, with the proceedings scheduled to take place in Mumbai. Previous auctions have seen the sale of various assets, such as a restaurant fetching Rs 4.53 crore, six flats sold for Rs 3.53 crore, and a guest house that garnered Rs 3.52 crore.

Dawood Ibrahim’s Connection to Mumbake Village

Dawood Ibrahim, a key accused in the infamous 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, resided in Mumbake village during his childhood before relocating to Mumbai in 1983. The upcoming auction puts a spotlight on his early life, as the properties carry historical significance. Dawood left India in the aftermath of the 1993 bomb blasts, which claimed the lives of 257 individuals.

1993 Mumbai Serial Blasts and CBI Investigation

The devastating bomb blasts on March 12, 1993, shook Mumbai, resulting in 257 fatalities, over 700 injuries, and substantial property damage estimated at Rs 27 crore. The case was subsequently transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the request of the Maharashtra government. On June 16, 2017, several accused individuals, including Mustafa Dossa and Abu Salem, were convicted in connection with the case. Dawood Ibrahim, a wanted terrorist, allegedly orchestrated the attacks.

The auction of Dawood Ibrahim’s childhood home and family properties adds a new chapter to the ongoing efforts to liquidate assets linked to individuals involved in criminal activities. The proceedings will be closely watched as authorities seek to dispense justice and address the legacy of one of India’s most notorious criminals.

Dawood Ibrahim, India’s most wanted criminal, has been admitted to a hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, in critical condition. According to reports, he may have been poisoned by one of his associates, which resulted in his emergency hospitalization two days ago. Pakistani authorities have increased security around the medical facility.

Dawood Ibrahim, infamous for his involvement in organized crime, fraud, theft, and various illegal activities, rose to prominence, leading the notorious D-Company. The criminal enterprise, operating in multiple countries, expanded into gold smuggling, real estate, extortion, and drug trafficking. Dawood’s connection to terrorism became evident in 1993 when his gang orchestrated bomb attacks in Mumbai, resulting in numerous casualties.

Outraged by communal tensions and pressured by Pakistan’s ISI, D-Company financed bomb attacks in 1993, killing 257 people in Mumbai. Dawood fled to Karachi, where he is said to reside to this day, unable to return to India or the UAE. His influence reportedly extended to supporting terrorists in the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Dawood Ibrahim, designated a Specially Designated Global Terrorist by the United States in 2003, remains on the UN Security Council’s list of individuals associated with al-Qaeda. Known as one of the richest and deadliest gangsters, his hospitalization has raised tensions, with security tightening around the medical facility. Official confirmation is awaited from both India and Pakistan, intensifying speculation and scrutiny on Dawood Ibrahim’s health.

</excerpt>

Dawood Ibrahim, a notorious underworld figure and one of India’s most wanted terrorists, has been admitted to a hospital in Karachi (Pakistan) in critical condition. Unverified reports suggest that the 67-year-old criminal mastermind fell victim to poisoning orchestrated by one of his associates, leading to his emergency hospitalization two days ago.

Security measures around the hospital have been escalated by Pakistani authorities. But an official confirmation is awaited from both Pakistani and Indian authorities.

Who is Dawood Ibrahim?

Dawood Ibrahim, born on December 26, 1955, in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, India, has been a central figure in the Indian underworld, linked to organized crime, terrorism, and drug trafficking. Recognized globally as a terrorist by the United Nations Security Council and the United States due to his association with al-Qaeda, Ibrahim’s criminal notoriety spans several decades.

Early Life

Born to Ibrahim Kaskar, a Maharashtra police constable, and Amina Bi, Dawood’s entry into the criminal world took place in the 1970s through smuggling and black-market activities. In the 1980s, he established the D-Company, a criminal syndicate involved in organized crime and international smuggling.

Dawood’s criminal empire extended beyond India, with significant operations in Dubai and other countries. His involvement in a large-scale drug-smuggling operation and leadership of D-Company solidified his position as a key figure in the Mumbai underworld.

1993 Mumbai Bombings and Criminal Allegations

One of the most infamous incidents linked to Dawood Ibrahim is the 1993 Mumbai bombings, a coordinated series of bomb explosions targeting prominent landmarks and resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life. The attacks were allegedly orchestrated by Dawood in collaboration with other terrorist organizations.

From a life of an underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim moved to the terror world under the instructions of Pakistan’s notorious Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence, commonly known as ISI.

In 2003, the United States of America (USA) designated him a global terrorist. He is also allegedly involved in the 26 November 2008 Mumbai attacks. The dastardly attack was carried out by 10 terrorists of Pakistani group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Global Criminal Network and Dubai Operations

Dawood’s criminal empire extended to Dubai, where he reportedly enjoyed protection and support from elements within the government. The city served as a crucial hub for his illegal activities, including smuggling and money laundering. In 2010, Ibrahim found a place on Forbes’ World’s 10 Most Wanted list after numerous attempts to locate him failed.

2013 IPL Spot-Fixing Scandal

Dawood Ibrahim and his associate Chhota Shakeel are alleged to have orchestrated the spot-fixing scandal, with players purportedly communicating with bookmakers and fixers connected to the notorious duo. The betting ring, reportedly managed by Ibrahim and Shakeel, is said to have profited substantially from illegal gambling activities surrounding the IPL matches.

Journalist Jyotirmoy Dey’s Murder (2011)

Allegedly orchestrated by Dawood Ibrahim’s henchmen, the killing of journalist Jyotirmoy Dey in 2011 sheds light on the underworld figure’s wrath against those exposing his illegal activities. Dey’s fearless reporting made him a target, resulting in a case that remains a matter of ongoing investigation.

Gulshan Kumar’s Assassination (1997):

Dawood Ibrahim’s hitmen reportedly targeted Gulshan Kumar in 1997, linking his murder to the underworld’s extortion operations. Kumar’s refusal to pay extortion money allegedly led to his tragic demise, illustrating the violent repercussions for those who resisted the criminal empire.

Smuggling of RDX and Arms (1993)

Dawood Ibrahim’s involvement in the smuggling of RDX and arms into India in 1993 exposes his dark connection to terrorism. The illicit trafficking played a pivotal role in the infamous Mumbai bombings and other terror attacks, showcasing the sinister intersection of organized crime and acts of mass violence.

As global authorities closely monitor Dawood Ibrahim’s critical condition in a Karachi hospital, the extensive details of his criminal activities continue to unfold, leaving a complex legacy that intertwines terrorism, organized crime, and violence.

As per a National Investigation Agency chargesheet, gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s gang member Salim Qureshi’s family entered Pakistan illegally three times since 2013 via the United Arab Emirates to attend Chhota Shakeel’s functions.

In a chargesheet filed in a Mumbai Court in a terror funding case, the NIA recorded the statement of Qureshi’s wife, Sazia Mohammad Salim Qureshi. Making a sensational claim, Sazia Qureshi said that they were allowed entry and exit to and from Pakistan’s Karachi Airport without the stamp of their arrival or departure on their passports.

The NIA, which is probing D-company’s syndicate and terror funding, has come to know during interrogation that Karachi airport is under the control of D-company. Stamps are not put on the passports of those who come to the Karachi Airport to strike business deals with Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Shakeel, and his family members, or “D-Company,” the NIA probe revealed.

The NIA, engaged in the investigation of terror funding, got information about this route during the interrogation of the brother-in-law of Chhota Shakeel and the wife of the arrested accused, Salim Qureshi alias Salim Fruit.

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) team has arrested Abdul Majeed Kutty in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. He is a wanted terrorist who was involved in an explosives case sent by underworld don Dawood Ibrahim 24 years ago at the behest of a Pakistani agency to carry out bomb blasts in Gujarat and Maharashtra on Republic Day 1997.

Three accused had been caught in Mehsana, Gujarat with the explosives in December 1996. Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was found guilty of conspiracy after the arrest of Mohammad Fazal and Qureshi Shakeel in Mehsana.

Gujarat ATS DIG Himanshu Shukla and DYSP K. K. Patel had received information that Abdul Majeed Kutty was living in Barinagar near Telco Mosque in Jamshedpur under the name Mohammad Kamal. Based on the information, ATS DYSP K. K. Patel reached the spot with his team. Accused Abdul Majeed Kutty alias Mohammad Kamal was then picked up.

K.K. Patel told The Daily Guardian that the ATS team had received information about Abdul Majeed Mohammad Ahmed living in Jamshedpur, on the basis of which the team picked him from outside his house. His interrogation revealed that he was involved in the case and was working with several gangsters including Chhota Rajan, Abu Salem and Chhota Shakeel.

According to police, Kutty was born in 1962 in Mahim, Mumbai. Kutty’s father ran a medical store and died in 1978. Kutty moved to Dubai after the death of his father, where he worked on aluminium section glass fittings until 1984 and returned to Mumbai.

While visiting Mohammad Ali Road Kutty Jamat in Mumbai, he had come in contact with Dawood, his brother Anish Ibrahim, Tiger Memon, Abu Salem, Mohammad Dosa, Chhota Shakeel and Mustafa Dosa. With the Dawood gang, Kutty got involved in gold smuggling and customs theft and travelled to and from Dubai.

Kutty was in Dubai in 1996 when he met Abu Salem. Salem asked for delivery of the quantity of explosives from Ajmer sent to detonate on Republic Day in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Kutty sent his man, Mohammad Fazal, to collect the amount. “Your man has been caught with explosives and my man has escaped,” Abu Salem had told Kutty.

Kutty later moved to Bangkok, where he worked casually until 1999. Kutty then came in contact with Mummumiya Panjumiya of Porbandar and started smuggling gold. During this period, Kutty, who was in contact with Mohammad Inamali of Jamshedpur, fled to Malaysia when he made a passport in the name of Mohammad Kamal. Kutty then started his textile business in Kuala Lumpur. He came to Jamshedpur in 2019 and lived with the name of Kamal.

The court had earlier sentenced the three accused to life imprisonment and fined them Rs 1 lakh for the possession of explosives.
