</excerpt>

In a bold show of solidarity with the Tibetan cause, an all-party parliamentary group has written to the Indian government, requesting that the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, be awarded to Tibet’s spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

The letter, submitted by the Indian Parliamentary Forum for Tibet, also urged the Centre to permit the Dalai Lama to address a joint session of Parliament, a symbolic gesture likely to provoke a strong response from China.

Cross-Party Support for Tibetan Leader

According to The Economic Times, the forum includes MPs from various parties such as the BJP, BJD, and JD(U). The appeal followed a resolution adopted during the group’s second official meeting this month.

The forum is led by BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sujeeth Kumar, and comprises ten parliamentarians. To further the initiative, the group launched a signature campaign to push for the honour

“We have initiated a signature campaign to award Bharat Ratna to His Holiness Dalai Lama. Many MPs have come forward, and some of them have sent video messages supporting the campaign. We will be writing to the Speaker of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to convene a joint sitting, which will be addressed by His Holiness,”

— Sujeeth Kumar, Convenor of the Forum

Beijing’s Past Reaction and Political Risk

The forum’s previous meeting in December 2023 had already attracted criticism from Beijing, and this fresh resolution could escalate tensions further.

Forum members include BJP leaders Ashok Bajpai, Lahar Singh Siroya, Vinay Dinu Tendulkar, Tapir Gao, and Rajendra Agrawal. The group also recently took a firm stand against China’s claim to appoint the next Dalai Lama, stating that Tibetans alone must decide his reincarnation.

Proposal for Mass Rally and Address in Central Hall

Arunachal Pradesh MP Tapir Gao proposed a mass rally to show public support for the Tibetan cause and suggested the Dalai Lama address the Central Hall of Parliament.

“He further suggested that the Dalai Lama address the Central Hall of the Parliament on topics such as peace and compassion,”

— Forum Resolution

The group also praised a pro-Tibet bill passed by the US Congress and encouraged similar legislation in India.

Call to Implement Tibetan Rehabilitation Policy

During the meeting, members urged the implementation of the 2014 Tibetan Rehabilitation Policy. They appealed to fellow MPs to visit Tibetan settlements and coordinate with local administrations to ensure the availability of basic amenities.

“We have requested all the MPs to reach out to the district administration and respective state governments so that land and amenities such as roads, electrification and drinking water are ensured for Tibetan rehabilitation,”

— Sujeeth Kumar

According to the policy, state governments must lease Tibetan refugee land for 20 years, provide rent tenancy certificates, and ensure inclusion in welfare and infrastructure schemes.

The Home Ministry has previously directed states to support Tibetan communities, ensuring their land remains undisturbed and that they receive facilities like roads, electricity, and clean water.

China has not yet reacted to this recent development.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday wished the Tibetan spiritual leader, 14th Dalai Lama, on his 90th birthday. In a message posted on X, PM Modi referred to him as a epitome of ‘love, compassion, patience and moral discipline’ and wished his ‘good health and long life’.

At the same time, monks at an exile Tibetan Buddhist monastery near Shimla saw to special prayers on the day. There were celebrations in Dharamshala on Saturday too, visited by leaders such as BJP’s Vijay Jolly and JD(U)’s Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, who met to mark the Dalai Lama’s milestone birthday.

The Life of the Dalai Lama

To Tibetans, the 14th Dalai Lama is Gyalwa Rinpoche, the supreme spiritual leader and head of Tibet. Born on July 6, 1935, in the Takster village in northeastern Tibet, his birth name was Lhamo Dhondup. At two, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama. By 1939, he was brought to Lhasa, and in February 1940 he was installed as Tibet’s head of government in a formal ceremony. Later to be called Tenzin Gyatso, at age six he started his monastic studies.

The name ‘Dalai Lama’ is derived from Mongolian and means ‘Ocean of Wisdom’. Dalai Lamas in Tibetan Buddhism are seen as incarnations of the Bodhisattva of compassion, enlightened ones who opt for rebirth to assist others.

In 1950, following China’s invasion of Tibet the year before, the Dalai Lama took all political powers. After a failed revolution in 1959, he escaped to India with over 80,000 of his followers. For more than six decades since, he has advocated the cause of peace, love, and compassion across the globe.

</excerpt>

While the 14th Dalai Lama was celebrating his 90th birthday on Sunday, July 6, the spiritual leader of the Tibetans issued a touching message to his believers. A day earlier, he went on X and asked people to cultivate kindness and compassion. He noted that he does not tend to celebrate birthdays, but accepted the global celebrations being done in his honour.

He laid stress on the values of peace of mind, selflessness, and religious coexistence. His appeal resonated with his lifelong spiritual work. At the same time, Tibetan communities, particularly in McLeodganj, commemorated with prayers, film showings, and youth forums.

‘I am just a simple Buddhist monk’

In his birthday greeting, Dalai Lama expressed appreciation to well-wishers and friends who were staging events. He liked that many were taking the opportunity to share compassion and warm-heartedness. “I am just a simple Buddhist monk, I don’t usually celebrate birthdays,” he said. “However, since you are staging events around my birthday, I wish to share some thoughts.”

90th Birthday Message

On the occasion of my 90th birthday, I understand that well-wishers and friends in many places, including Tibetan communities, are gathering for celebrations. I particularly appreciate the fact that many of you are using the occasion to engage in… pic.twitter.com/bfWjAZ18BO

— Dalai Lama (@DalaiLama) July 5, 2025

He extended his appreciation to Tibetan communities and other parts of the world that organized peaceful and reflective activities. His remarks came as festivities were held worldwide, particularly among Tibetan exile communities.

Emphasis on Peace of Mind & Benevolence

Dalai Lama emphasized that individuals need to harmonize material progress with spiritual development. He encouraged followers to aim at attaining peace of mind by being compassionate and having a good heart. He reminded them that by doing this, they can make the world a better place—not only for dear ones but for all.

He added, “Although it’s necessary to work for material progress, it is crucial to work towards attaining peace of mind through the development of a good heart.”

Ongoing Adherence to Values & Harmony

Dalai Lama also reaffirmed his fundamental commitments. He vowed to keep spreading human values, inter-religious harmony, and time-tested Indian wisdom that is mind and emotion-oriented. He is grateful to Tibetan culture for its intense contribution to peace and compassion.

Inspired by Indian master Shantideva, he quoted, “As long as space exists, so long as living beings exist, until then, may I myself abide, to end the suffering of the world.”

Festivals in McLeodganj

In McLeodganj, where the Tibetan government-in-exile has its seat, festivities involved a religious conference, a youth forum, cinema shows, and special prayers. People came together not only to pay their respects to their leader but to discuss the values he advocates.

With his words and presence, the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday was more than a celebration—it became a clarion call to act with compassion and spiritual courage.

</excerpt>

As the 14th Dalai Lama reaches 90, his declaration to reincarnate has rocked China’s plans in Tibet and revived the Tibetan fight for identity and spiritual independence. The choice is a serious blow to Beijing’s attempts to erode Tibetan culture through the enlarging Han presence and increasing military presence in the Himalayan plateau.

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Lama and leader of Tibetan Buddhism, not only decided to carry on the tradition of reincarnation but also made sure that it remains Chinese-free. By making this decision, he gives a new lease of life to the ancient tradition and offers new hope to more than six million Tibet Buddhists who have suffered under Chinese rule for the past 75 years.

“In deciding to reincarnate, Tenzin Gyatso has revitalized the ancient Dalai Lama’s institution and brought hope to the six million Tibetan Buddhists oppressed by China for 75 years.”

Dalai Lama Defies Cultural Imperialism

The Dalai Lama’s action directly counteracts China’s efforts to dominate Tibetan Buddhism. All four major schools—Nyingma, Sakya, Kagyu, and Gelug—acknowledge the Dalai Lama’s spiritual and temporal authority. Though the Communist Party of China has made efforts to attempt to manipulate the reincarnation process for political gain, the Dalai Lama still holds sway over his spiritual heritage.

“He has also fortified Tibetan Buddhism in the world by refusing to kneel to the cultural imperialism of Han China.”

— Randhir Jaiswal (@MEAIndia) July 4, 2025

Reincarnation to Be Selected in the Free World

Remarkably, the spiritual guru has placed the Gaden Phodrang Trust, headed by his guru Samdhong Rinpoche, in charge of discovering his reincarnation. This ensures that the 15th Lama will be born outside China’s totalitarian state, independent of Beijing’s control.

This also keeps the process of reincarnation away from previous controversies, such as the Panchen Lama or the Karmapa. The Chinese authorities abducted the authentic Panchen Lama—recognized by the Dalai Lama—in 1995, while Beijing continues to promote its own appointee, Gyaltsen Norbu.

“That the reincarnation will be decided by the Gaden Pradhong Trust. Means that the 15th Dalai Lama will be born in the free world.”

China May Install Its Own ‘Dalai Lama’

Though China is not likely to acknowledge any Dalai Lama that the Gaden Phodrang Trust might appoint, it may try to set up a puppet with the discredited “Golden Urn” process—a practice spurned by most Tibetans. The Qing dynasty employed this in 1792 as a political method camouflaged as religious legitimacy.

Whether or not such tactics succeed, the spiritual authority of the Dalai Lama continues unimpaired.

Grateful for Avalokiteshvara’s blessings, he pledged to keep serving people, especially those in exile in Dharamshala.
</excerpt>

The Dalai Lama on Saturday dismissed speculation going on for the declaration of his successor, saying that he wishes to keep serving people for another 30-40 years.

At a long life prayer ceremony organized in advance of his 90th birthday at Tsuglagkhang, the principal Dalai Lama temple in McLeodganj, Tenzin Gyatso revealed that he has ‘clear signs and indications’ of the blessings of Avalokiteshvara.

“Glancing at the numerous prophecies, I feel I have blessings of the Avalokiteshvara. I have done my best till now. I hope to still live for 30-40 years more. Your prayers have yielded fruit till now,” the Tibetan spiritual leader stated.

He also added, “Although we have lost our country and we are in exile in India, that’s where I have been able to do good to beings quite a lot. Those who live here in Dharamshala. I want to do good and serve beings as much as I can.”

</excerpt>

A prominent Australian scholar has proposed that the spiritual persona of Dalai Lama represents gender fluidity, rendering him a symbol of significance to queer Buddhists across the globe. The theory is put forward by Stephen Kerry, a lecturer in sociology at Charles Darwin University, who points out the Dalai Lama’s spiritual connection with Avalokitesvara, a bodhisattva who is recognized for beyond-gender representation in religious cultures in Asia.

In a recent article in The Conversation, Kerry refers to Avalokitesvara as “the godly being who hears the cries of the world.” The deity, who originated in India as masculine, is worshipped in several different forms—Chenrezig in Tibet, Guanyin in China, and Kanzeon in Japan—each of which can be imagined as male, female, or non-binary.

Avalokitesvara: A Spiritual Anchor for Queer Buddhists

“Avalokitesvara manifests to living creatures in whatever guise would most rescue them,” Kerry states, highlighting the bodhisattva’s flexibility. This attribute, he maintains, particularly speaks to LGBTQIA Buddhists who find religious solace and validation in Avalokitesvara’s gender-equal presence.

“I spent the last five years researching the lives of queer Buddhists in Australia. In the course of this research, I have interviewed and surveyed 109 LGBTQIA Buddhist Australians. The voices of these people, and my own experience as a genderqueer Buddhist individual, disclose how the Dalai Lama proves to be an unlikely role model for people who live a trans and Buddhist life,” adds Kerry.

One of the trans women he interviewed described how Guanyin’s development from male to female over centuries parallels her development. Another queer person described his interest in images of Avalokitesvara “looking effeminate and handsome, with a cute moustache.”

Resistance from Traditional Buddhists

That said, Kerry also recognizes that not all Buddhists accept this reading. He relates a report by a genderqueer Buddhist whose teacher reduced Avalokitesvara’s perceived queerness to “just stories.”

Despite such opposition, Kerry observes, “Despite being a cisgender man who has been somewhat ambivalent in his advocacy of queer individuals, the Dalai Lama, as an expression of the bodhisattva of compassion, is a potential spiritual connection between contemporary queer Buddhists and hundreds-of-years-old histories of gender transition and fluidity.”

Succession Debate Adds to Spotlight

The dialogue surrounding the Dalai Lama’s legacy has become even more heated as the present and 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, approaches the age of 90. His future succession continues to arouse political and religious controversy.

The Dalai Lama has declared that China will not appoint his reincarnation, asserting the autonomy of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Meanwhile, the Chinese government insists on approving any future Dalai Lama, further heightening tensions over the institution’s future.

Why the World May Soon Witness Two Dalai Lama & What It Means

<excerpt>Tibet may soon face the reality of two Dalai Lamas—one spiritual, one political—as China escalates its control efforts.
</excerpt>

As the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, celebrates his 90th birthday this week, he is not retiring into quiet contemplation. Rather, he is rewriting history. In a daring and historic move, he has announced that his reincarnation will carry on after his passing away, and that only his trusty institution — the Gaden Phodrang Trust — can uniquely designate his successor.

This choice does more than anticipate China’s power. It sets the stage for a geopolitical and religious conflict that threatens to divide the Tibetan Buddhist world in two, into two Dalai Lamas: one chosen by the Tibetan tradition, and one forced upon it by Beijing.

Ancient Process and Its Political Hijack

Historically, a new Dalai Lama is sought only after the one who is alive dies. The senior monks learn visions, look for signs in the lakes or in dreams, and look for a child able to recognize the belongings of the deceased Dalai Lama. The religious process is slow and reverent.

This is how the present Dalai Lama was found in 1939. When two years old, he recognized belongings of his predecessor and was enthroned a year later at the Potala Palace.

Still, this custom started breaking apart after 1950, when China took over Tibet. Nine years hence, the Dalai Lama escaped to India following a rebellion that was crushed. Ever since then, China has continued to meddle in the religious affairs of Tibetans, such as when choosing senior Buddhist leaders.

Beijing’s Interference: A Prelude to the Coming Showdown

China’s ambition to dominate Tibetan Buddhism was apparent in 1995. In that year, the Dalai Lama acknowledged a six-year-old boy, Gendün Chökyi Nyima, as the Panchen Lama — the second-most influential figure in Tibetan Buddhism. China quickly kidnapped the boy and his family. They have not been heard from since. Instead, Beijing installed its own Panchen Lama, who is shunned by most Tibetans as a puppet.

This was a dress rehearsal. Experts now predict China will do the same with the Dalai Lama himself.

Dalai Lama Acts Before It’s Too Late

Feeling this risk, the Dalai Lama preempted. On July 2, a day before his 90th birthday, he issued a statement at a religious function in Dharamsala.

He confirmed that his reincarnation would occur and that the Gaden Phodrang Trust — the organization with which his office is linked — will guide the process. Senior lamas of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism and authorized spiritual channels alone would be involved. “No one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter,” he stated, a pointed rebuff to China.

He explained that Tibetans on both sides of the Himalayas, within Tibet as well as in exile, had asked him to maintain the institution. Their request, he added, left his decision inescapable.

China Responds and So Do Tibetans

As predicted, China denied his words. A foreign ministry spokesman made it clear again that any reincarnation has to be approved by the central government. They referenced an ancient Qing dynasty ritual in which names are selected from a golden urn — something Tibetans do not follow. Chinese law even requires Communist Party sanction for all senior reincarnate lamas.

But Tibetans are holding their ground. Youdon Aukatsang, an exiled Tibetan MP, stated a China-appointed Dalai Lama would not be legitimized. “Not just Tibetans, the world will not accept it,” she stated.

Tibetan citizen Yonten explained to The Diplomat that this isn’t about religion. “This is about our freedom to decide our future without foreign control,” he explained. By announcing his successor plan now, the Dalai Lama has eliminated the political uncertainty that China had hoped to leverage.

Could the Vatican Hold the Key?

While the East identifies with a spiritual-political battle, a muted diplomatic player might make the difference — the Vatican. Although the Holy See is not officially connected to Beijing, in recent years it has carefully tumbled through Chinese religious sensitivities, particularly regarding Catholic bishop appointments.

Writers feel that if the Vatican endorsed the Gaden Phodrang-led process’s legitimacy, it would make its global acceptance of the Tibetan-elected Dalai Lama more stronger. Although the Pope and Dalai Lama have met a number of times, an official religious blessing would attract new moral boundaries — particularly from Buddhist converts in the West and in Asia.

Such a step might also resonate in other Buddhist-majority countries like Japan, Sri Lanka, and Mongolia, in granting more diplomatic leverage to the Tibetan cause.

What if Two Dalai Lama Arise?

Experts concur that Beijing will appoint its own Dalai Lama after the current one passes away. This government-supported leader will live inside Tibet and espouse Beijing’s agenda. In the meantime, the Tibetan-recognized Dalai Lama, who is most likely identified outside of China, will reside outside of China — possibly in India.

This division will cause confusion, competition, and a divided world-wide Buddhist community. However, it will also challenge China’s soft power. The majority of world Buddhists, particularly non-Chinese ones, are probably to take the Tibetan route. Beijing might prevail only on its home ground and in its own allies.

A Diplomatic Opportunity for India

The crisis of succession presents India with a rare soft power opportunity. Having hosted the Dalai Lama since 1959, India has accumulated colossal goodwill among the Tibetan diaspora. If two Dalai Lamas emerge, India’s public endorsement of the rightful Tibetan process may make New Delhi the moral custodian of Tibetan Buddhism.

It would also enable India to counterbalance China on the global stage, joining Buddhist nations like Bhutan, Thailand, and Vietnam. It might even unlock new opportunities in Southeast Asian diplomacy, where Buddhism is still an influence on culture.

Two Dalai Lama: What Lies Ahead?

The Dalai Lama’s pre-emptive strike has re-written centuries of convention, not in defiance but because of the need. He has put trust ahead of fear and opted for clarity rather than ambiguity. While China is getting its own story in line, the world is poised for an unprecedented religious and geopolitical showdown.

Two Dalai Lamas will soon inhabit the planet — but just one will bear the heart of Tibet.

</excerpt>

A new row over the Dalai Lama’s succession has broken out with Beijing claiming it will have to validate the next reincarnation. This was said just hours after the Dalai Lama himself stated that only his nonprofit organisation is authorised to determine his successor. The comments have rekindled tensions as the Tibetan spiritual leader and Beijing dispute who should decide Tibetan Buddhist leadership.

The Dalai Lama, who is 90 this Sunday, made the remarks at his birthday celebrations. With his old age and dubious health, the question of succession is now more pressing—and sensitive from a political point of view.

India, the US, and China are closely watching the succession issue. They do so not only for its religious value but also for strategic reasons. Moreover, the outcome may shift regional dynamics. Furthermore, it could impact diplomacy over Tibet. Therefore, global interest in the Dalai Lama’s successor remains high.

China Insists on Golden Urn Approval

Shortly after the Dalai Lama’s declaration, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning responded sharply. She said the reincarnation of leaders like the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama must follow tradition.

Therefore, the process must include a lottery draw from a golden urn. Furthermore, the central government must give final approval. This involves obtaining lots from a golden urn and being endorsed by China’s central government.

Mao Ning told AFP that the central government must sanction the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama, and other eminent Buddhist leaders, and that their selection must occur through a lottery draw from a golden urn.

Dalai Lama’s Position Defies Beijing

By publicly declaring his institution’s exclusive authority, the Dalai Lama has confronted directly China’s assertion of control over the reincarnation process. His announcement ends years of speculation about whether he would designate a successor at all.

Most of his followers worry that Beijing will appoint a state-selected Dalai Lama, as it did with the Panchen Lama, to secure tighter control over Tibet.

Global Attention on a Spiritual Succession

This politically charged religious question has been of global concern. For China, the succession presents a means to tighten its grip on Tibet. For the Dalai Lama’s people, it is a struggle to maintain religious freedom and cultural heritage.

With the debate over succession heating up, the world now waits and sees if China will proceed alone—or if the spiritual process will remain in Tibetan control.

‘Must Be Approved by Beijing’: China Responds to Dalai Lama, Demands Control

<excerpt>China has reiterated its claim to control the selection of the next Dalai Lama, rejecting the Tibetan leader’s assertion that his reincarnation will follow traditional practices without Beijing’s involvement.
</excerpt>

China on Wednesday categorically said that it has to approve the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, addressing the Tibetan spiritual leader’s recent declaration that he will have a selected successor upon death.

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, escaped Lhasa in 1959, aged 23, out of fear for his life as Chinese troops took over Tibet. He has since become the world ambassador for the Tibetan people’s non-violent struggle to maintain their cultural and spiritual heritage after winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

On Wednesday, the Dalai Lama confirmed that the 600-year-old tradition of succession by reincarnation would carry on, providing an assurance to Tibetans concerned about the destiny of their leadership.

China Insists on Last Word in Successor’s Choice

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning responded by saying at a routine press briefing, The reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama, and other prominent Buddhist leaders must be selected by lot drawing from a golden urn, and endorsed by the central government,” citing a system of selection first proposed in the 18th century by a Qing dynasty emperor.

The Chinese have always referred to the present Dalai Lama as a separatist and maintain that only Beijing can have the legitimate say in who will replace him.

Beijing Justifies Religious Control Measures

Mao stressed that China maintains religious freedom but exercises strict control over religious affairs, including the reincarnation of Tibetan Buddhist leaders.

“The Chinese government has a policy of freedom of religious belief, but there are regulations on religious affairs and ways to regulate the reincarnation of Tibetan living Buddhas,” she said.

She justified China’s overall religious approach, adding, “The survival and development of any religion are in following the social environment of the country and adopting the cultural tradition.”

Mao also asserted that Tibetan Buddhism is of Chinese origin and must bear “Chinese characteristics.” “Tibetan Buddhism was born here in China and has Chinese characteristics,” she said.

World and Tibetan Communities Watch Closely

The Dalai Lama’s reassertion has rekindled controversy over the custody of Tibetan religious leadership in the future. Although most Tibetans believe in customary processes and the Dalai Lama’s appointing system, China’s efforts to modernize religion into its political system have attracted attention from international human rights organizations.

‘No One Else Has The Right’: Dalai Lama Rejects China’s Role in Choosing His Successor

<excerpt>In a firm statement, the Dalai Lama declared that China will have no authority in selecting the 15th Dalai Lama, reiterating that the reincarnation process will follow traditional Tibetan Buddhist procedures under the Gaden Phodrang Trust.
</excerpt>

The 14th Dalai Lama has made it categorically clear that China will not be involved in the selection of the 15th Dalai Lama, explaining that only traditional Tibetan Buddhist methods and the Gaden Phodrang Trust will determine the process of reincarnation.

In a posting called “Affirming the Continuation of the Institution of Lama,” Tibet’s spiritual leader reiterated that the search and identification of his successor will be done “by tradition” and threatened that “no one else has any such authority to interfere in the matter.”

Dalai Lama Reaffirms Position from 2011

He pointed to his 24 September 2011 statement, in which he spoke to Tibetan spiritual leaders, the international Tibetan community, and the Tibetan Buddhist faithful.

Statement Affirming the Continuation of the Institution of Dalai Lama

(Translated from the original Tibetan)

On 24 September 2011, at a meeting of the heads of Tibetan spiritual traditions, I made a statement to fellow Tibetans in and outside Tibet, followers of Tibetan… pic.twitter.com/VqtBUH9yDm

— Dalai Lama (@DalaiLama) July 2, 2025

“On 24 September 2011, during the meeting of Tibetan spiritual traditions’ heads, I stated that Tibetans and non-Tibetans in and outside Tibet, Tibetan Buddhist believers, and people connected with Tibet and Tibetans about whether or not the Dalai Lama institution should be continued. I said, ‘As early as 1969, I made it clear that people concerned should determine whether the reincarnations of the Dalai Lama should continue in the future,'” The Dalai Lama added.

Public and Spiritual Appeals Impel Decision

The spritual guru clarified that even if he had not publicly debated the matter for 14 years, he was receiving appeals from different Buddhist leaders, adherents, and Tibetans in exile as well as within Tibet.

“I also indicated, ‘When I am around ninety, I will take advice from the high Lamas of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions, the Tibetan people, and other concerned individuals who practice Tibetan Buddhism, to reconsider if the institution of the Dalai Lama should be continued or not’,” he further stated.

He revealed that the appeals had come from members of the Exile Tibetan Parliament, the Central Tibetan Administration, NGOs, Himalayan Buddhists, Mongolian practitioners, Russian Buddhist republics, and even mainland Chinese Buddhists.

“In particular, I have also received messages in different ways from Tibetans in Tibet expressing the same appeal. In keeping with all these requests, I am stating that the institution of the Dalai Lama will endure,” he declared.

Future Selection Process Clearly Defined

Reiterating his 2011 statement, the position defined the accepted procedures and the Gaden Phodrang Trust’s authority in the reincarnation process.

“The procedure through which a future Dalai Lama is to be identified has been set out in the 24 September 2011 statement, indicating that it will be solely the responsibility of members of the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama,” he said.

“They should refer to the different heads of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions and to the trustworthy oath-bound Dharma Protectors inseparably connected with the Dalai Lamas’ lineage. They should thereby perform the process of search and recognition by the tradition of the past,” he further said.

Gaden Phodrang Trust to Decide Without External Interference

The Dalai Lama emphasized that no other power is entitled to intervene in the spiritual and cultural heritage of Tibet.

“I hereby again reaffirm that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has exclusive jurisdiction to identify the future reincarnation; no one else has any such jurisdiction to intervene in this,” he asserted, leaving no scope for China’s intervention in the spiritual succession.

</excerpt>

As the Dalai Lama prepares to celebrate his 90th birthday on Sunday, speculation grows that he may announce his successor. The Tibetan spiritual leader will deliver an address at 9:30 am, followed by a press statement at 11 am, which many expect will include a clear declaration about the future of his institution.

Dharamshala Celebrations On

Multi-day celebrations are already underway in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh—where the Dalai Lama has lived since 1959 and the Tibetan government-in-exile is based. Tibetan followers and communities have converged to mark the milestone occasion of their beloved leader.

Successor Most Likely to Be Selected from Exiled Community

More recently, the Dalai Lama has said his successor could be outside of Tibet. Rather, he has suggested choosing one from the Tibetan community in exile, presumably headquartered in India. In his newest book, the Dalai Lama penned, “Since the reason for a reincarnation is to continue the work of the forebear, the new Dalai Lama will be born in the free world so that the traditional role of the Dalai Lama —i.e., being the voice for universal compassion, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, and the symbol of Tibet with the hopes and aspirations of the Tibetan people— will remain on track.”

India Ramps Up Support for Tibetan Protest

In a public display of solidarity, high-level Indian politicians have attended the festivities. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu were among those spotted attending functions in Dharamshala. The higher level of engagement follows worsening India-China relations after the 2020 border clashes.

China Set to Refuse Any Exiled Heir

The issue of succession has geopolitical significance. China, who took Tibet in 1949-50, terms the Dalai Lama a separatist and has always maintained that his successor must be sanctioned within China. Beijing will likely reject any announcement made abroad.

Framework for Continuation of Dalai Lama Institution

Earlier this week, the Dalai Lama had calmed down believers regarding the institution’s future. “The rest of my life I will dedicate for the benefit of others, as much as possible, as extensive as possible. There will be some kind of a framework within which we can talk about the continuation of the institution of the Dalai Lamas,” he said.

Dalai Lama’s Spiritual Legacy

The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and is believed to be the reincarnation of his forebears. He is the 14th of this series. The Dalai Lama has been in exile since he escaped Tibet in 1959 following a rebellion against the Chinese that failed.

He plans for his reincarnation outside China, resisting Beijing’s claims. India shelters Tibetan exiles, while the U.S. backs Tibetans’ rights, opposing China’s attempt to control the next Dalai Lama.
</excerpt>

The question of who will replace the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan Buddhists, is not only of interest to his people but also to the world powers such as China, India, and the United States, each for their own strategic interests. When the Nobel Peace Prize winner celebrates his 90th birthday this Sunday, he continues to be one of the world’s most influential leaders, with fans well beyond Buddhist communities.

How was the Present Dalai Lama Selected?

In Tibetan tradition, the soul of an old Buddhist monk gets reborn into a new body upon death. The incumbent Dalai Lama, born Lhamo Dhondup on July 6, 1935, to a family of farmers in northern Tibet, was identified at the age of two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama.

His identification was made from a convergence of indications, such as a vision by a senior monk, as summarized on the Dalai Lama’s official website. The search party dispatched by the Tibetan government was assured after the young boy pointed to the objects that had previously belonged to his predecessor and exclaimed, “It’s mine, it’s mine.”

In the winter of 1940, Lhamo Thondup was escorted to the Potala Palace in Lhasa and officially enthroned as the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people.

How Could his Successor be Chosen?

In his “Voice for the Voiceless” book, issued in March 2025, the Dalai Lama had stated that the next incarnation would be born outside China. Exiled in northern India since he escaped Tibet in 1959 after an aborted revolt against Mao Zedong’s regime, he also said he would give more details about the succession process on his 90th birthday.

The Tibetan parliament-in-exile, based like the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala, India, has established a framework to ensure the continuity of the exiled administration. According to this system, officers from the Gaden Phodrang Foundation will be responsible for identifying and recognizing his successor.

Established by the incumbent Dalai Lama in 2015, the foundation is dedicated to ‘upholding and maintaining the institution and tradition of the Dalai Lama’ with respect to his religious duties, according to its website. It has several of his close advisors as its leaders.

What is China’s Attitude?

claims it has the right to authorize the Dalai Lama’s successor, citing it as an inheritance from imperial times. This comprises a ritual that was first initiated in 1793 by the Qing dynasty when the names of possible reincarnations are randomly selected from a golden urn.

Chinese authorities maintain that the process of reincarnation must be upheld according to national legislation, using the urn and ensuring that the reincarnated lama is born within China’s territory.

But Tibetans see Beijing’s action as a strategy for increasing dominance over their society. As the Dalai Lama has noted, it is not suitable for Chinese Communists who oppose religion ‘to interfere with the reincarnation system of lamas, not to say that of the Dalai Lama’.

In his book, he called on Tibetans to turn down ‘a candidate selected for political motives by anyone, including those of the People’s Republic of China’.

China labels the Dalai Lama, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for keeping the Tibetan cause alive, as a ‘separatist’. It also prohibits his image being publicly displayed or any expression of obeisance.

In March 2025, a Chinese foreign ministry official stated that the Dalai Lama was a political exile who ‘has no right to represent the Tibetan people at all’. Beijing also asserts that it has abolished serfdom and brought development to Tibet, refusing any crackdown on Tibetan rights.

How would India and U.S. be Able to Affect This?

India is home to over 100,000 Tibetan Buddhists, including the Dalai Lama, who are able to reside, study, and work freely there. His presence in India, where he is popularly held in esteem, is regularly viewed by foreign affairs experts as a subtle instrument of leverage for New Delhi in its interaction with China.

At the same time, the United States has time and again reaffirmed its resolve to uphold Tibetans’ human rights. US lawmakers have indicated they will resist China’s move to decide on the next Dalai Lama.

In 2024, former President Joe Biden signed into law a bill that is meant to pressure Beijing to resolve the conflict regarding Tibet’s push for increased autonomy.

The Dalai Lama received the Gold Mercury Award for Peace and Sustainability 2025 at his residence in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. Nicolas De Santis, President and Secretary General of Gold Mercury International, presented the award, recognizing his lifelong dedication to peace, compassion, education, and human rights.

Santis praised the Dalai Lama’s leadership, highlighting his advocacy for non-violence, human dignity, interfaith dialogue, and environmental protection. He noted that the Tibetan spiritual leader had warned about climate change long before it became a global concern. “Your Holiness, you have defended the rights of the Tibetan people through non-violent means and are also a global voice for sustainability,” Santis stated.

Gold Mercury International honors visionary leaders shaping the future with courage and integrity, Santis said, adding that the Dalai Lama’s teachings will continue guiding future generations toward a peaceful world.

Meanwhile, China considers the Dalai Lama a “separatist” and insists on selecting his successor. However, the 89-year-old spiritual leader has dismissed any successor appointed by China. Reports from human rights groups indicate that China suppresses Tibetan culture, religion, and freedoms through heavy surveillance and forced assimilation.

The dispute intensifies as Beijing insists on controlling Tibetan Buddhist reincarnations.
</excerpt>

China’s foreign ministry has reacted sharply against the Dalai Lama over comments made in his recent book, Voice for the Voiceless, that the next Dalai Lama would be born outside China, as per Reuters.

China rejected the Dalai Lama’s claims, indicating that he lacks the mandate to speak on behalf of Tibetans. “He has no right to represent the people of Tibet. Reincarnations of the living Buddha, including the Dalai Lama, should conform to the regulations of the nation,” the ministry stated.

Chinese authorities stressed that reincarnation is a specific tradition in Tibetan Buddhism and the title of Dalai Lama has long been ratified by the central government. The foreign ministry once again expressed its position, referring to the Dalai Lama as “a political exile who is involved in anti-China separatist activities in the name of religion.”

In spite of the Dalai Lama’s words, China has argued that its leadership over Tibet will not be affected by what he says. For a long time, Beijing has claimed to govern the identification of its next in line through the government.

Position of Dalai Lama on Succession

14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, escaped to India in 1959 following the rebellion against Chinese Communism which was unsuccessful. Since then, he has stayed in exile with his thousands of Tibetan followers in India.

In his work, he affirms that his successor “would be born in a free world,” meaning elsewhere outside China. Earlier, he had hinted at the possibility that the next leader of Tibetan Buddhists might rise from India, where he has his residence.

The Tibetan nation’s right to be the master of their homeland cannot be put off indefinitely and their desire to be free must not be broken forever by oppressive means,” he wrote in the excerpt from the book, Reuters quoted.

He also highlighted what happens when oppression is used as a means and said, “One clear lesson we know from history is this: if you keep people permanently unhappy, you cannot have a stable society.

Tensions About Tibet’s Future

The competition for the Dalai Lama’s successor continues to be a major source of conflict between China and the Tibetan exile community. As Beijing continues to insist on regulating the reincarnation process, the Dalai Lama has explicitly stated that any candidate chosen by China will not be accepted by Tibetans.

As the spiritual leader goes on to promote Tibetan autonomy, his remarks feed continued tensions regarding Tibet’s future as part of China.

He was a key figure in China negotiations. His death marks the loss of an influential leader in Tibetan history.
</excerpt>

Gyalo Thondup, elder brother of the Dalai Lama and former chairman of the exiled Tibetan government in India, died on Saturday evening at the age of 97. He breathed his last at his home in Kalimpong, a hill town in the eastern West Bengal state, though no further details about his death were immediately released.

Thondup played a significant role in several rounds of talks with China and was credited with forging vital international support for the Tibetan cause. He was instrumental in networking with foreign governments and helped garner U.S. support for the Tibetan struggle. Tibetan media outlets lauded his tireless efforts to advance their cause.

On Sunday, the Dalai Lama performed a prayer ceremony for his deceased brother at one of the largest Tibetan monasteries in southern India, while residing in the latter for his winter sojourn. Here, the Dalai Lama chanted for ‘swift rebirth’ of his late brother according to Buddhist ritual. His efforts towards the Tibetan struggle were immense and we are grateful for his contribution.

Thondup was one of six siblings of the Dalai Lama and the only one not destined for a religious life. After making India his home in 1952, Thondup helped establish early contacts with the Indian and U.S. governments in support of Tibet. He was crucial in liaising with Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, after the Dalai Lama’s escape to India. Additionally, Thondup played a crucial role in establishing relationships between Tibetan leaders and U.S. officials.

In 1979, Thondup engaged the Chinese leadership in talks and dropped his demand of armed revolution to liberate Tibet from China. He did all this for diplomacy. Remembering his talks with Beijing officials, Thondup said, as quoted in Radio Free Asia in 2003, that he believed, “Neither India nor the U.S. could find a solution for the Tibetan cause, and a solution can come only with the face-to-face talks at Beijing.”

Thondup served as the chairman of the exiled Tibetan government based in Dharamshala, India, from 1991 to 1993, leaving a lasting impact on the Tibetan political landscape.

The 6.8-magnitude quake shook Dingri county, leaving extensive destruction and injuries.
</excerpt>

Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in a powerful earthquake that struck Dingri County in Tibet on Tuesday. The 6.8-magnitude quake caused extensive destruction, killing at least 95 people and injuring 130 others.

The earthquake hit Dingri county in Xigaze, Tibet Autonomous Region, at 9:05 am Beijing Time, according to regional disaster relief authorities. Tremors from the quake were strong enough to shake buildings and send residents fleeing into the streets in neighboring Nepal. The US Geological Survey reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 7.1.

Dalai Lama Offers Prayers for Victims

In a heartfelt message, the Dalai Lama conveyed his grief over the tragedy. “I am deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that struck Dingri in Tibet and the surrounding regions this morning,” he stated.

He mourned the significant loss of life, injuries, and the widespread destruction of homes and property. “I offer my prayers for those who have lost their lives and extend my wishes for a swift recovery to all who have been injured,” the Dalai Lama added.

Extensive Damage and Relief Efforts

The earthquake left a trail of destruction in Dingri county. Consequently, the earthquake displaced many families and severely impacted essential infrastructure. Meanwhile, regional disaster relief teams have been working tirelessly to manage rescue operations and provide much-needed aid to those affected.

The Dalai Lama has lived in exile in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, for decades. He continues to use his platform to advocate for peace and offer support during times of crisis. His message reflects compassion and solidarity with the victims of this natural disaster.

The Tibetan spiritual leader’s comments on uncontrolled immigration to Western countries, particularly regarding Europe’s cultural identity, have sparked reactions, including from Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Dalai Lama on Immigration

When asked about immigration from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East to Europe, the Dalai Lama shared his views. He expressed support for allowing a limited number of people from Afghanistan or the Middle East to stay in Europe but voiced concerns about Europe losing its cultural identity. He stated, “The whole of Europe becoming a Muslim country? Impossible. Or an African country—also impossible.”

Cultural and Climatic Compatibility

The Dalai Lama suggested that immigrants might be better suited to remain in their homelands, citing the compatibility of climate and culture. He remarked, “They themselves are better to their own land, climatically. Much better, you’re too cold.” When Vaidyanathan noted her own parents had immigrated from India to the UK, the Dalai Lama chuckled and added, “If England, a small island, [is filled with] 90% Indians, then I don’t know.”

Reactions and Context

The Dalai Lama’s comments have sparked varied reactions, with some supporting his views on maintaining cultural identity, while others criticize his stance on immigration. The resurfacing of this interview highlights ongoing global discussions about immigration policies and cultural integration.

</excerpt>

The 89-year-old 14th Dalai Lama has put aside worries over his health and the future of Tibetan Buddhism by telling followers that he believes he will live to be more than 100 years old. Asked about his health after undergoing knee surgery in New York in June, the Nobel laureate said: “According to my dream, I may live 110 years,” with an air of optimism about his longevity.

The Dalai Lama had to keep away from meeting his followers nearly three months after the surgery. He, however has been back in his residence at Dharamshala, India, and he meets visitors thrice a week though he continues relying on aides for walking and uses a golf cart for longer distances. In the meantime, he also indicated that his knee was improving and there were no serious problems.

Succession Concerns

Even though the Dalai Lama predicts living for another two decades is comforting to his followers, uncertainty about his succession remains a pressing issue. Tibetan Buddhists traditionally believe the Dalai Lama is reincarnated as a child after his death, but this process raises many questions. Dolma Tsering Teykhang, deputy speaker of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile said, “We are only lay people, so we cannot even imagine his wisdom so we are waiting for his clear guidance as he turns 90 next month in July”.

The 89-year-old spiritual leader has always shied away from giving direct responses about his successor, thereby leaving his followers in suspense. Teykhang told that although the Tibetan Government-in-Exile could continue its political work, the responsibility of ascertaining the next Dalai Lama lies with Gaden Phodrang Foundation, the institution created by the current Dalai Lama in 2015 to oversee his religious and spiritual responsibilities.

Teykhang added, “We can’t take it for granted that he is going to live 113 years,” pointing to the unexpected early death of the previous Dalai Lama at 58. She expressed her concern, stating, “Without His Holiness, the struggle of Tibet, I don’t know where it will go.” But she placed her hope in the system the Dalai Lama has built over the past 60 years.

The Dalai Lama plays a role in geopolitics.
His influence does not limit itself to Tibetan Buddhism. This can be seen in the relationship between India and China. He is the Dalai Lama, who fled to India in 1959 after the uprising against the Chinese rule failed. Today, he is the symbol of resistance in Tibet, and Beijing has argued for a long time that it will choose his successor, but the Dalai Lama has argued that his next incarnation could emerge in India. He has warned that any successor chosen by China would not be respected.

The Dalai Lama’s political role has been quite momentous on the world scale. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for advocating for Tibet’s cause and has continuously used a “Middle Way” approach, seeking genuine autonomy and religious freedom within China. Regarding the new global political scenario, Teykhang said that the newly elected U.S. President, Donald Trump, has been Tibet-friendly and human rights-friendly, which she believes will bode well for Tibetans.

Teykhang revealed that Sikyong Penpa Tsering, the Tibetan government-in-exile, is also visiting the U.S. for assessment of political climate shifts. “Our Sikyong is there to figure how the changes are happening, and whether that would remain constant irrespective of which government is there, in my opinion, this remains relatively consistent in U.S.-Tibet support.”.

Overall, the future of Tibet remains uncertain without the Dalai Lama, but his leadership and legacy continue to mold the political and spiritual landscape for Tibetans around the world.

</excerpt>

A day after the canceling of Gyaltsen Norbu, the China-recognized Panchen Lama visit to Nepal, the Chinese Communist Party’s official channel, CGTN, published an article entitled “Regulating Tibetan Buddhism Reincarnation Under the Rule of Law.” This article underscored that as far back as 2007, China began issuing the “Measures on the Management of Tulku Reincarnation of Tibetan Buddhism,” the first rule that regulates reincarnation cases. It declared, “The reincarnation process should not be interfered with or controlled by foreign organizations or individuals, and no group or individual is permitted to unilaterally search for or recognize reincarnations.”

This report reveals the real motive of Gyaltsen Norbu’s proposed visit to Lumbini, which is the birthplace of the Buddha. Rumors were circulating that he would be visiting Nepal, bordering India. As late as December 12, The South China Morning Post reported: “Panchen Lama to make rare visit to Nepal after Tibet trip.” The article noted that Nepal’s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, had expressed that Kathmandu regarded Tibet and Taiwan as indistinguishable parts of China.

Nepal had planned to host Gyaltsen Norbu, marking his second foreign trip after a visit to Thailand in 2019. However, Nepal decided to block the visit, informing the Chinese Embassy that the Lama would not be allowed to visit due to Nepal’s stance on neutrality regarding religious matters.

The issue goes beyond a diplomatic defeat. It is part of an ongoing battle to determine who should control the next Dalai Lama. The Panchen Lama is a highly revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism, especially within the Gelukpa tradition, second only to the Dalai Lama. Traditionally, Panchen Lamas have played a critical role in identifying new Dalai Lamas.

After the death of the 10th Panchen Lama in 1989, an argument arose over the identity of the next Panchen Lama. The Chinese government recognized him as Gyaltsen Norbu while the government of the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala approved Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, who has been missing since 1995 when he was detained by the Chinese police.

An activist group, Tibetan Rights Collective (TRC), stated that Nepal’s refusal to host Gyaltsen Norbu reflects the contentious legitimacy of his claim as the Panchen Lama. “By taking this stance, Nepal may be signaling its reluctance to endorse China’s religious appointments,” they analyzed.

The 10th Panchen Lama, Chökyi Gyaltsen, was born in 1938, and Beijing enforced him as the real Panchen Lama after discarding the Tibetan candidate. In 1962, he, in a show of immense courage, drew up a letter containing several pressing issues confronting Tibet, for which Chinese leaders took notice of. He, thereafter, served a confinement for 17 years.

The choice of the next Dalai Lama could be in a similar way to that of the 11th Panchen Lama. After the mysterious death of Chökyi Gyaltsen, the Chinese government established a “search team” to determine who should succeed him. After communication by the team with the Dalai Lama’s office, Beijing hijacked the search process, choosing Gyaltsen Norbu, whose choice was marred by manipulation, including the use of a “Golden Urn” to select him.

It is likely that the same procedures will be applied for selecting the 15th Dalai Lama if the current leader, the 14th Dalai Lama, does not announce his return in the near future.

In this sense, the denial of hosting Gyaltsen Norbu on the part of Nepal can be well interpreted as a sign that Nepal was not willing to accept the religious appointments being endorsed by Beijing. After all, the government of Nepal had already agreed to term Tibet as “Xizang,” the China-preferred nomenclature, but it was not so for Gyaltsen Norbu’s visit.

The situation also raises questions about Gyaltsen Norbu’s potential role. He has a respected teacher, Geshe Jamyang Gyatso, from Labrang Tashikyil Monastery in Amdo, who plays a key role in his education and forming his worldviews. It remains to be seen whether Gyaltsen Norbu will remain docile under Beijing’s control or follow the footsteps of his predecessors.

In 2015, Gyaltsen Norbu was said to have been “briefed” on his role as a Communist leader when he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Zhongnanhai. Recently, on February 10, 2024, Gyaltsen Norbu delivered a message for the Tibetan New Year, surprising many by not praising Xi Jinping, although he often supports the Communist Party’s policies.

These developments are especially relevant for the Indian Himalayan population, which is concerned about the future of the lineage of the Dalai Lama.

Beijing considers the Dalai Lama a separatist and has lodged formal protests, warning against interference in its internal affairs.

This statement follows a meeting between senior US State Department and White House officials with the Dalai Lama in New York on Wednesday. US officials reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the human rights of Tibetans, according to the State Department.

China, which views the 89-year-old exiled spiritual leader as a dangerous separatist, has lodged formal protests with the US over the meeting. “China has made solemn protests with the US,” said foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning during a regular press briefing. “We don’t allow the Dalai Lama to engage in political separatist activities in the US”

Last month, China also voiced strong opposition to a US law signed by President Joe Biden that urges Beijing to resolve the ongoing dispute over Tibet’s demands for greater autonomy. The Chinese foreign ministry criticized the appointment of a special coordinator for Tibetan issues, calling it interference in China’s internal affairs and vowed to “firmly defend” its interests.

</excerpt>

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that sought action against Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The PIL was filed in response to a viral video from April 2023 showing Dalai Lama kissing a child on the lips.

The plea, brought by a confederation of NGOs and Jeroninio Almeida, raised concerns about the impact of the incident on the child’s well-being and called for guidelines to protect children during spiritual gatherings. It described the incident as a violation under the POCSO Act and criticized the reactions from the Tibetan community, which cited cultural practices.

In response, the bench of Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela noted that the incident had occurred one and a half years ago in public view and that Dalai Lama had issued a public apology on April 10, 2023. The court emphasized that Dalai Lama’s apology addressed the issue, and thus dismissed the PIL.

The plea highlighted broader societal indifference towards child protection and urged stricter enforcement of laws safeguarding children from sexual offences. It underscored the need for responsible behavior towards children by spiritual leaders and other figures in authority.

Dalai Lama’s apology acknowledged the controversy surrounding the incident, which sparked global debate and criticism. Despite the dismissal of the PIL, the case has drawn attention to the intersection of cultural practices, child protection, and legal accountability in spiritual contexts.

</excerpt>

A delegation of senior US lawmakers, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, met with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile in India on Wednesday, provoking strong condemnation from China.

The bipartisan group, led by Congressman Michael McCaul and Pelosi, visited the 88-year-old Buddhist spiritual leader at his residence in Dharamsala, a hill town in northern India.

China, which claims Tibet as part of its territory, condemned the meeting as “external interference” and asserted that Tibet-related matters are “purely China’s domestic affairs.”

Pelosi addressed a gathering of Tibetans, expressing her honor at meeting the Dalai Lama. “It is truly a blessing,” she said, in a speech broadcasted by the government-in-exile’s Tibet TV.

This visit follows the US Congress passing a bill urging China to resume talks with Tibetan leaders, which have been stalled since 2010. The move is part of Washington’s efforts to reduce tensions with Beijing.

“This bill sends a message to the Chinese government that we have clarity in our thinking and understanding of Tibet’s freedom,” Pelosi said. “It tells China: ‘Things have changed now, prepare for that.'”

Pelosi mentioned that President Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill soon.

Ahead of the visit, the Chinese embassy in New Delhi criticized the meeting, labeling the Dalai Lama as “not a pure religious figure, but a political exile engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the cloak of religion.” Many exiled Tibetans fear Beijing will appoint a rival successor to the Dalai Lama to strengthen its control over Tibet, which it annexed in 1950.

The Dalai Lama fled Tibet at the age of 23, escaping an uprising crushed by Chinese troops. He crossed the Himalayas into India, where he has lived in exile since.

“The whole world, we are the same human beings, we all have the same rights — and this world belongs to humanity,” the Dalai Lama told the delegates. “We should take care of this world,” he added, emphasizing the importance of peace and happiness for all people.

The Dalai Lama relinquished his political role in 2011, handing over secular authority to a democratically elected government representing around 130,000 Tibetans globally.

Penpa Tsering, the sikyong or head of the Tibetan government-in-exile, reiterated their stance of seeking greater autonomy rather than full independence through the “Middle Way” policy. This approach aims to resolve the Sino-Tibet conflict through dialogue.

However, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian accused the Tibetan administration of attempting to break away from China.

</excerpt>

On Wednesday, former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other members of a Congressional delegation arrived at the Dalai Lama Temple to meet with the Tibetan spiritual leader. Disciples of the Dalai Lama were also seen at the temple complex this morning.

The bipartisan US delegation, led by Republican Chair of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCaul, was welcomed by officials from the Central Tibetan Administration at Kangra Airport in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday.

Ahead of the meeting with the Dalai Lama, Dolma Tsering Teykhang, the Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, emphasized that the visit of the US lawmakers signifies “Tibet is not alone.” She stated, “They are here to experience a different way of culture that Tibetans have…we are going to have the official get-together in the meeting…It sends (the message) that Tibet is not alone. United States is with Tibet and human rights still matter. This is a message not only for Tibet but anybody who is aspiring for human rights and for freedom…” Tsering Teykhang further remarked, “All those who are suffering under the intimidation of China and the expansionist mentality of Xi Jinping, I think this is a very big message for them…”

She criticized China’s authoritarian approach, noting that Beijing is “annoyed” with those who support Tibet. “China is annoyed with anyone who supports Tibet. We are here not to annoy or humiliate China…representatives and senators are here to support just the cause. So, when there is truth, you have a supporter and if there is any truth or when they rectify the wrong politics they are practicing in Tibet, they will also get a lot of support…” she said.

Earlier this week, the US Congress passed a bill encouraging Beijing to re-engage with the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders to peacefully resolve their dispute over Tibet’s status and governance. The US House of Representatives approved the ‘Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Dispute Act’, also known as the ‘Resolve Tibet Act’, which now awaits President Joe Biden’s signature to become law, as reported by Radio Free Asia.

The legislation rejects Beijing’s claim that Tibet has been part of China since ancient times and calls on China to “cease its propagation of disinformation about the history of Tibet, the Tibetan people, and Tibetan institutions, including that of the Dalai Lama.” It also urges China to resume talks with the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders regarding Tibet’s governance. No formal discussions have occurred since 2010.

Upon her arrival in Dharamshala, Pelosi expressed her excitement, saying, “It’s very exciting to be here.” Notably, Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in 2022 had previously strained US-China relations. McCaul confirmed President Joe Biden’s intention to sign the ‘Resolve Tibet Act’, emphasizing the bill’s importance and expressing enthusiasm about the upcoming meeting with the Dalai Lama.

Meanwhile, China voiced its concerns over the US delegation’s visit to Dharamshala. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, during a regular press conference, urged the US to recognize the “anti-China separatist nature of the Dalai Group” and to “stop sending the wrong signal to the world.” Jian stated, “It’s known by all that the 14th Dalai Lama is not a pure religious figure, but a political exile engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the cloak of religion.” The spokesperson continued, “We are gravely concerned over the relevant reports and urge the US side to fully recognize the anti-China separatist nature of the Dalai group, honour the commitments the US has made to China on issues related to Xizang, have no contact with the Dalai group in any form, and stop sending the wrong signal to the world.” Notably, China refers to Tibet as Xizang.

During their visit on Tuesday, the US delegation also toured the Tibetan Parliament in exile and the Tibet Museum Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Gangchen Kyisjong in Dharamshala.

</excerpt>

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu met Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama at his residence in Dharamshala. Speaking to ANI, CM Sukhu said that the Dalai Lama praised Himachal, saying it is a very beautiful state and said that India is a very beautiful country that respects all religions.

“I took the blessings. He (Dalai Lama) said that Himachal Pradesh is a very beautiful state, India is a very beautiful country and there is a lot of respect for all religions in our culture,” Sukhu told ANI.

The Tibetan spiritual leader has always received huge attention from people from the political background.

Earlier, in April, BJP candidate from Mandi Lok Sabha constituency, Kangana Ranaut met the spiritual leader.

“It was divine, an encounter I’ll forever treasure. Being in the presence of such a remarkable being exuding sheer divinity was deeply emotional for me and ex-CM (Jairam Thakur). A cherished moment for a lifetime,” she said after meeting him.

The 14th Dalai Lama known to the Tibetan people as Gyalwa Rinpoche, is the current Dalai Lama, also the highest spiritual leader and head of Tibet.

China considers Dalai Lama, who has been living in exile in India for decades, a separatist intending to split the formerly independent region from the control of China, as per UCA News.

Chinese forces invaded and annexed Tibet in the 1950s under the pretext that it had always been a part of China.

According to the Dalai Lama, he only wants further autonomy for Tibet within China if there is a guarantee that its religion, language, and culture will be preserved.

Tibetans were angered by China’s acquisition of their territory because they saw it as an occupation by a foreign power. China violently put down an uprising in Tibet against Chinese control in 1959.

Despite Chinese persecution, Tibetans have fought and gave up their lives for independence for many years, UCA News reported.

</excerpt>

Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, extended his congratulations to Taiwan’s new President, Lai Ching-te, who was inaugurated on May 20. The Dalai Lama praised the Taiwanese people’s commitment to democratic values, stating, “It is wonderful to see how firmly rooted democracy has become in Taiwan. The Taiwanese people have not only developed a flourishing, robust democracy but have also achieved great prosperity, while at the same time preserving their rich cultural traditions.” He also wished President Lai success in addressing the challenges ahead and fulfilling the aspirations of Taiwan’s citizens.

Lai Ching-te, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), became the fifth popularly elected president of Taiwan, with the DPP now governing for a third consecutive four-year term. Lai, 64, and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim took office in a ceremony at the Presidential Office, where Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu of the Kuomintang (KMT) handed over the great seal of the nation, symbolizing Lai’s new role as head of state. The inauguration celebrations included street performances and a military display in Taipei, and outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen also attended the ceremony.

In his inauguration address, Lai Ching-te issued a stern warning to China, urging Beijing to cease its political and military intimidation of Taiwan. He called on China to “share with Taiwan the global responsibility of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait as well as the greater region, and ensure the world is free from the fear of war.”

</excerpt>

Buddhist community leaders have voiced their support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi following remarks made by Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge regarding PM Modi’s affiliation with Buddhism.

Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena, founder and president of Mahabodhi International Meditation Center, expressed appreciation for PM Modi’s efforts on behalf of the Buddhist community in India, noting that previous governments had not shown the same level of support.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to PM Narendra Modi for his contributions to the Buddhist community in India. Previous administrations did not prioritize the Buddhist cause to this extent. PM Modi has significantly advanced Buddhism, including laying the foundation stone for the International Buddhist Centre in Lumbini and facilitating the transportation of Buddha relics to countries like Thailand. He consistently promotes Buddhism, even addressing it at the United Nations,” Sanghasena remarked.

Another Buddhist Monk, Norbu Negi from Himachal Pradesh’s Dharamshala, countered claims that PM Modi lacks faith in Buddhism, highlighting his annual birthday phone call to the Dalai Lama and the support provided by the Modi government and party members during Buddhist events.

“It is incorrect to suggest that PM Modi lacks faith in Buddhism. He regularly connects with the Dalai Lama on his birthday, and his government and party members actively assist us during Buddhist functions,” Negi stated.

The controversy arose from comments made by Congress leader Kharge during an interview with News 24, where he questioned PM Modi’s commitment to Buddhism, citing examples such as the inauguration of a Buddha Vihar and the construction of the Ram Temple.
