</excerpt>

World champion D Gukesh has shocked chess legend Magnus Carlsen for the second time. He beat the Norwegian chess grandmaster in the sixth round of Grand Chess Tour SuperUnited Rapid 2025 in Zagreb, Croatia on Thursday. With the win, Gukesh moved to the top individually at the current tournament. Indian grand master tied for the lead at the end of play on Day 1 and he went great guns on the second day too.

D Gukesh opened the second day by beating Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov in round four and then beat American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana in round five.

Five Straight Wins for D Gukesh, Including Carlsen Upset

This was followed by his game against Carlsen and D Gukesh won that too with the black pieces. This was the fifth consecutive win for Gukesh in the tournament. Coincidentally, this win followed Carlsen’s description of Gukesh as ‘one of the weaker players’ in the tournament.

Carlsen’s Pre-Tournament Comments on Gukesh Resurface

“Gukesh hasn’t done anything to indicate that he’s going to do well in such a tournament,” Carlsen had said in an interview before the tournament.

“Gukesh actually played quite well here last time. But it remains to be proven that he’s one of the best players in such a format. This is a very, very strong field that we have here. Players like Gukesh and Anish Giri… they have a lot to prove because there aren’t a lot of players you can feast on. In the course of 27 rounds, things usually show. I hope for Gukesh’s sake that he can play better, but playing him in this tournament I will sort of approach it as I’m playing one of the presumably weaker players in the tournament actually,” he had added.

Gukesh Recovers from Early Loss, Dominates Second Day

Beginning the tournament with a defeat to Duda, Gukesh dominated a reckless France’s Alireza Firouzja before beating compatriot R Praggnanandhaa to move to four points out of a possible six.

Carlsen defeated Wesley So and drew his other two against hometown favorite Ivan Saric and Duda to tie Gukesh on points, as Wesley alone from the others took part in all the decisive games, aside from Gukesh, as he put over his US compatriot Fabiano Caruana and Holland’s Anish Giri.

In-form Praggnanandhaa had a miserable day at the office on day one as he drew with Firouzja and Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov at the expense of the defeat to Gukesh that proved very costly to him.

</excerpt>

D Gukesh will be missing the next Las Vegas Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, with last Tuesday’s official line-up announced. The current world champion gave mediocre performances at the Paris and Weissenhaus Grand Slams.

Strong Showing at Norway Chess 2025 Before Exhaustion Sets In

He recently played at Norway Chess 2025, where he came third behind winner Magnus Carlsen and runner-up Fabiano Caruana.

Speaking to TimesofIndia.com, Freestyle Chess CEO and co-founder Jan Henric Buettner opened up on Gukesh’s absence from the Las Vegas roster. “He said he’s exhausted and needs rest,” he said.

CEO: ‘We Were Always Expecting Gukesh to Decline’

“His performances have not been that good at any Grand Slam. We were always expecting that he would decline to participate in the next event.

“Anyway, he had an invitation (for the Las Vegas leg). So after his not-so-good performance in Paris, he was still up for the task. He said, ‘We’re gonna come. I will come to Las Vegas.

“But then, there was Norway Chess. This exhausted him so much. Even I would be exhausted. He was so exhausted that I got a message. He said he’s exhausted and would like to rest. He can’t come to Las Vegas. Unfortunately, he needs rest. So, you know, that’s understandable,” he further added.

Vidit Gujrathi Replaces Gukesh in Las Vegas Line-Up

Buettner has also confirmed that Vidit Gujrathi has taken the place of Gukesh in the Las Vegas line-up.

Gukesh’s Norway Chess stint involved him scoring a win against Carlsen in Round 6, in which the Norwegian erred while playing the endgame. The World No. 1 also slammed his table in frustration as Gukesh scored his first classical win vs Carlsen.

Current Live Rankings: Gukesh World No. 5, Eyes India No. 1 Spot

In the live chess rankings, Gukesh is already World No. 5, behind fourth-placed R Praggnanandhaa. Arjun Erigaisi is sixth. Carlsen held the top spot, followed by American GMs Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana. Gukesh will be looking to become India No. 1 again very soon.

Gukesh’s cheeky remarK, ‘Beating Magnus’ stole the spotlight. Even Carlsen agreed it was the standout moment. Gukesh’s first classical win over Carlsen earned laughs, applause, and a lasting impression.
</excerpt>

Following intense battles, five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen took his seventh Norway Chess crown after American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana beat India’s young star D. Gukesh. While Gukesh failed to win the title, he still had a moment to cherish.

During a post-tournament event, the 19-year-old kept his spirits high and showed his sense of humour. When asked about his favourite moment from the tournament, Gukesh didn’t miss a beat and replied while looking at Carlsen, “Beating Magnus.” The response sparked laughter among the audience and brought a smile to Carlsen’s face.

Magnus’ Favourite Moment

Conversely, however, when the same question was put to Carlsen, he echoed Gukesh’s words, saying, “It’s the same as Gukesh. I mean, there were great moments in the tournament. That’s the one that sticks out for me as well.” The clip was then posted by Norway Chess with the caption, “We will ALL remember this one thing.”

Tough Game b/w Gukesh and Magnus

Even after losing to Gukesh in round six, a game in which Carlsen was plainly angry as he slapped the table before shaking hands, the Norwegian great recovered. Summing up that defeat, Carlsen said, “The dream of playing a really good tournament burst with that game. It was not my best moment, but I regretted the actions that I took more than the gesture because that sort of just happened at the time. I was so kind of zoned out that I had to get out of the car on the ride home and just take a few minutes to gather myself.”

Watch Magnus’ Reaction:

WHAT JUST HAPPENED? 😱🫣 pic.twitter.com/RwBqhfU0gv

— Norway Chess (@NorwayChess) June 1, 2025

Carlsen had initially won the opening round but stumbled in round six against Gukesh, who celebrated his first-ever classical win over the World No. 1. However, Carlsen made a strong comeback and secured the championship after Gukesh lost his final-round game to Caruana.

In the final standings, Carlsen topped with 16 points, followed by Caruana at 15.5, and Gukesh with 14.5. Arjun Erigaisi, another Indian talent, ended the tournament in fifth place with 12.5 points. Carlsen later remarked that Gukesh and Erigaisi ‘still need a little bit of time to prepare’, suggesting they are promising but not quite at their peak yet.

Despite a prior loss to Gukesh, Carlsen’s consistent performance ensured his victory whereas Gukesh seemed visibly upset with himself after the final round.
</excerpt>

In a thrilling finish to Norway Chess 2025, Magnus Carlsen won his seventh title in Stavanger. Gukesh, on the other hand, could be seen visibly upset with himself after his loss against Caruana. Carlsen won because Fabiano Caruana beat India’s D Gukesh in the final round, helping Carlsen edge ahead with 16 points, just half a point more than Caruana and 1.5 ahead of Gukesh.

What Happened In The Tournament?

The tournament saw high drama and emotion, especially in Round 6 when 19-year-old World Champion D Gukesh claimed his first classical win over Magnus Carlsen after a rare slip by the Norwegian. Carlsen’s visible frustration, slamming the table, captured the intensity of the moment and quickly went viral.
In his game, Gukesh offered a handshake with just two seconds left on the clock and then covered his face with his hands in frustration. His loss against Caruana was heartbreaking for his fans all across and deeply affected him.

Despite a tough moment earlier, Carlsen held a draw against India’s Arjun Erigaisi in the final game, sealing his title win. He called the victory a “relief” and praised young talents like Gukesh, saying they have great potential but need more time to shine consistently.

Final Standings Of The Tournament

Defending champion Magnus Carlsen wrapped up the tournament with 16 points after managing a draw from a tough position against fellow Indian player Arjun Erigaisi who himself ended the tournament in fifth place with 12.5 points. . Fabiano Caruana came second with 15.5 points, while D Gukesh came in third with 14.5 points.
In the women’s competition, Anna Muzychuk claimed the championship with 16.5 points. Meanwhile, Koneru Humpy from India stayed close behind, finishing with a commendable 15 points.

With talents like Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi shining internationally, India’s chess future looks stronger than ever.

Gukesh defeats Magnus Carlsen in a shocking Norway Chess 2025 encounter, prompting an emotional outburst from the world number one. The 19-year-old Indian prodigy now stands just behind Carlsen on the leaderboard.
</excerpt>

The sixth round of the Norway Chess tournament saw a rematch between the world number one, Magnus Carlsen, and the world chess champion D. Gukesh, wherein he beat the Norwegian in a humbling defeat, leading to an explosive reaction from Carlsen.

Earlier in the same tournament, Carlsen beat Gukesh in the first round of Norway Chess 2025. Afterward, he took to X to announce himself as the king of chess by posting a quote from the hit show The Wire, which read, “You come at the king, you best not miss.” Gukesh, who was under relentless pressure from Carlsen, only saw himself win after a blunder by Magnus Carlsen that sealed his loss in 62 moves.

— Norway Chess (@NorwayChess) June 1, 2025

Carlsen’s Outburst After Blunder

Carlsen then had an outburst, slamming his hand on the table. In his rage, however, he showed respect by shaking his hand and walking away while Gukesh was seen standing in disbelief over what had just happened.

Gukesh Reflects, “I Don’t Know What Happened.”

“I don’t know, I’m still kind of shaken from that game,” Gukesh said in an interview. “I don’t know what happened. There wasn’t much I could do, it was lost. I was trying to make moves, which kind of was tricky for him, and luckily, he got into a time scramble. One thing I learned from this tournament was that time scrambles can go out of control.” This marks the first time the 19-year-old beat the veteran 5 time world champion.

“First Classical win over Magnus, not the way I expected (or) wanted it to be, but I will take it,” Gukesh said after his comeback victory in a game where he was only on the defensive.

Gukesh Receives Praise From Coach

Gukesh’s coach, GMr Vishnu Prasanna, commented saying, “We have to give a lot of credit to Gukesh for his stubbornness and his resourcefulness because I think he was aware that he was dead lost for so long, yet he kept kicking, he kept kicking, and the time went lower, the more chances he had to do something with the position. I do not think he intended to win that, but I am sure he is happy,”

Despite the loss against Gukesh, Magnus Carlsen still leads Norway Chess 2025 along with Fabiano Caruana at 9.5 points. Gukesh finds himself in second with one point less. In Norway chess, in the classical format, the player is awarded 3 points for a win and 1 point each in case of a draw.

</excerpt>

In a heart-stopping battle at Norway Chess 2025, teenager D Gukesh, 18, stunned five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen to secure what is arguably the biggest victory of his life. It was his first Classical victory over the world No. 1 since he became the youngest world champion in chess history.

The Indian teenager had lost to Magnus Carlsen previously in the event, raising questions over his title victory over Ding Liren. But D Gukesh struck back with a bang, showing he is among the best and putting the word out for a sizzling new rivalry with the Norwegian icon.

From Dream to Reality

D Gukesh broke history in December by defeating China’s Ding Liren in a best-of-14 series to become the world’s youngest ever Classical world champion. Though the milestone was achieved, he stood openly when he stated, “Obviously, becoming the world champion doesn’t mean that I am the best player in the world. Obviously, there’s Magnus.” He had his sights firmly on the next challenge — defeating Carlsen in Classical chess.

A Shaky Start to 2025

D Gukesh started the year in good form with a runner-up in Tata Steel Chess. He was, however, far from good in the Freestyle Grand Slam tournaments in Weissenhaus and Paris. His form continued to deteriorate with a second-worst result in the Superbet Classic in Romania.

It was rough at Norway Chess. He lost two consecutive games to Magnus Carlsen and fellow countryman Arjun Erigaisi. The critics began wondering whether his World Championship victory was an isolated incident.

Comeback Begins

D Gukesh quieted his skeptics soon enough. He beat world No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura in Round 3 and drew with Fabiano Caruana before winning the Armageddon tiebreak. Following a draw with Wei Yi, he had Carlsen once again — this time, determined to rewrite history.

Gukesh Hunts Down the ‘King’

Even as he played white, D Gukesh was on the defensive early on as Carlsen took charge after a queen exchange in move 27. But Gukesh remained calm. From the 40th move onwards, he started pursuing Carlsen’s king. A string of checks culminated in an important blunder by Carlsen in move 52 (Ne2+). Gukesh capitalized and trapped the Norwegian in a lost game.

Carlsen Reacts, Gukesh Stays Humble

Magnus Carlsen, clearly irritated, slammed the table, sending pieces flying before hastily apologizing and clapping Gukesh on the back. The Indian youngster was humble, describing it as “just a lucky day” and confessing, “99 out of 100 times I would lose.”

The victory placed Gukesh third in the standings after six rounds. With rounds to spare, and a rematch against Arjun Erigaisi, he is still in the running for the title.

More significantly, this display commands the chess world’s attention. Gukesh didn’t just beat Carlsen — he demonstrated he can perform under pressure, outsmart the best, and live up to world champion status.

Arjun Erigaisi triumphed over Wei Yi in Armageddon, while Koneru Humpy capitalised on an endgame error by R. Vaishali for a strong start in the women’s section.
</excerpt>

The opening round of the Norway Chess Tournament saw Magnus Carlsen beat the world champion D Gukesh in a thrilling round of chess, proving again why he is considered the best in the world. They had last played against each other last year for the world title, where the Indian teen emerged victorious and claimed the title of world champion.

The Norway chess tournament features the top six players of the world in both the Open and the Women’s categories.

Rare Opening, Relentless Pressure

Magnus tried to throw Gukesh off by playing the Jobava London, an extremely rare opening move, however, Gukesh did not fall for the trap and regained position by the 11th move. The Norwegian was relentless and saw himself to 3 points after a match that lasted for over four hours and 56 moves. In Norway chess, in the classical format, the player is awarded 3 points for a win and 1 point each in case of a draw.

“I tried to surprise him. I responded the way you often do, especially in the first round, in the absolute wussiest way possible,” said the 5 time world champion

Erigaisi Triumphs in Armageddon

Arjun Erigaisi, another Indian representing the nation on the world stage, comfortably won over China’s number 1 player Wei Yi in Armageddon after the two agreed on a draw in 54 moves. Armageddon chess is a tiebreaker format that has the same rules as a regular game of chess, except for two very important distinctions: Black has draw odds, meaning that if Black draws the game, then they win, and Black starts with less time on the clock than White.

With a win over the Wei, the world number 4 ranked player has 1.5 points after the opening round of Norway Chess, as a win in Armageddon earns a player 0.5 points.

Koneru Humpy defeated R. Vaishal capitalising on her opponent’s endgame error.

</excerpt>

Magnus Carlsen made a strong comeback to classical chess, defeating World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju in the opening round of Norway Chess 2025.

A Comeback to Remember

Magnus Carlsen returned to individual classical chess after nearly a year. He faced reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju in a much-awaited Round 1 match. Despite the long break, Carlsen showed sharp form. He launched a brilliant king-side attack that helped him win the game.

Praise for Gukesh

After the match, Carlsen joined live commentary. He praised Gukesh for his competitive spirit. “He’s also an ambitious player,” Carlsen said, as quoted by Chess.com. “So I thought we’re not necessarily going to get a totally flat game just because he’s at least equalised from the opening,” he added.

A Win Is a Win

When asked if the victory meant more because it came against the world champion, Carlsen stayed modest.
“Not necessarily, but every win in this tournament is hard to come by, so I’m happy with that,” he said.

Nakamura Outlasts Caruana

Meanwhile, another big match took place. Hikaru Nakamura played a tough classical game against Fabiano Caruana. The match was long and intense. However, Nakamura used Caruana’s time pressure to his advantage and secured a well-earned win.

Arjun Erigaisi Impresses on Debut

Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi made a memorable debut at Norway Chess. He faced another first-timer, Grandmaster Wei Yi, in the armageddon round. Arjun played confidently and came out on top.

Humpy Scores Only Classical Win in Women’s Section

In the women’s tournament, Grandmaster Koneru Humpy claimed the only classical win of the round. She took full advantage of a major mistake by Grandmaster Vaishali Rameshbabu. Vaishali defended well for most of the game, but under pressure, she made a key error. Humpy quickly turned that into a win.

Other Women’s Matches Go to Armageddon

The rest of the women’s games ended in armageddon tiebreakers. Grandmaster Anna Muzychuk defeated International Master Sara Khadem. Meanwhile, Grandmaster Lei Tingjie outplayed Women’s World Champion Grandmaster Ju Wenjun.

</excerpt>

D Gukesh became the youngest world chess champion. Since then, his journey has seen both success and struggle. He nearly won the Tata Steel Chess tournament but lost to R Praggnanandhaa in a tie-break. This close match took place in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.

However, his performance dropped in the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour.

Freestyle Chess results disappoint

Gukesh started the Freestyle Chess Tour in Weissenhaus, Germany. Unfortunately, he didn’t win a single game. Later, in the Paris event, he finished at the bottom of the leaderboard.

Currently, he is competing in the Superbet Classic in Poland, which is part of the Grand Chess Tour. After seven rounds, he has 3.5 points and stands in joint seventh place.

Criticism grows, but a new chance awaits

Due to recent results, Gukesh is under pressure. Critics have started questioning his ability as a world champion. Still, he has a big chance to bounce back. He will play in the Norway Chess tournament in Stavanger later this month. Hopefully, this event can help him move past his Freestyle losses.

More importantly, the tournament will feature a highly anticipated match — Gukesh vs. Magnus Carlsen. It’s a clash between the current world champion and the world No. 1 in classical chess.

Carlsen plays down the clash

For Gukesh, this could be the biggest match of his career. In fact, it might mean more than his title win over Ding Liren in Singapore five months ago.

On the other hand, Carlsen has shown little excitement. The 34-year-old stepped away from classical chess in 2022. He chose not to defend his world title, which allowed Ding to face Ian Nepomniachtchi in 2023.

Since then, Carlsen has focused on Freestyle Chess. He co-founded the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour and the Freestyle Chess Players Club with German entrepreneur Jan Henric Buettner.

In an interview on Take Take Take, Carlsen said, “Obviously I’ve played him in Freestyle but I know that that’s not his thing, at least so far. I think everybody has a lot of respect for him in Classical Chess.”

He also explained his reasons for avoiding the classical format. “But I can tell you for sure that the reason why I’m not playing a lot of Classical chess is that I’m not motivated to play it. I don’t want to play it that often.”

He added, “I think for him it’s different, it’s his main thing. So it’s kind of natural that we don’t clash that often.”

Norway Chess set to feature elite lineup

The 13th edition of Norway Chess will be held from May 26 to June 6. Carlsen, a six-time winner of this event, will play on home soil. Alongside him, the world’s top five players will also compete.

This includes Hikaru Nakamura (No. 2), Arjun Erigaisi (No. 4), and Fabiano Caruana (No. 5). Chinese grandmaster Wei Yi, ranked eighth, will also take part.

Overall, with $148,000 in prize money and a powerful lineup, Norway Chess promises to be one of the strongest tournaments this year.

The young grandmaster is a big MS Dhoni fan.
</excerpt>

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a team so much revered in the Indian Premier League (IPL), honoured chess world champion D Gukesh on Friday. The organisation welcomed the teenage grandmaster in a special honour by giving him a jersey in the special colours of CSK emblazoning No. 18, highlighting his record win in becoming a world chess champion at the young age of 18.

CSK posted an emotional video on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle, wherein ace cricketer R Ashwin, who is from Chennai too, gave the special jersey to D Gukesh. The emotional gesture served to reinforce the image of Chennai as a city that loves not just cricket but has given the world-class chess champions too.

Chennai: A Hub of Chess Champions

While Chennai has an unparalleled passion for cricket, the city is also known for its deep-rooted chess legacy. It has been home to five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand, along with other young chess prodigies like R Praggnanandhaa and R Vaishali.

Gukesh’s victory over China’s Ding Liren in the 2024 World Chess Championship added another glorious chapter to Chennai’s rich sporting history.

D Gukesh Admiration for MS Dhoni and Novak Djokovic

D Gukesh is a great fan of former CSK skipper MS Dhoni, who guided the team to five IPL championships. The young chess sensation attributes his inspiration to Dhoni and tennis great Novak Djokovic.

“When I was younger, it was Indian cricketer MS Dhoni, now it’s Novak Djokovic,” D Gukesh revealed in an interview with PTI. “I think both are great athletes and I admire a lot of things about both of them.”

“I think the way Dhoni and tennis great Novak Djokovic handle themselves under immense pressure, they are big-game players and always come out on top and bring out their best whenever needed. That is why I am attracted to them.”

A Proud Moment for Chennai’s Sporting Legacy

By making this unique gesture, Chennai Super Kings was not only celebrating Gukesh’s solo achievement but the city’s burgeoning dominance across a range of sports. As the city keeps producing world-class sporting personalities across all domains, the cricket and chess bond gets even more solid.

</excerpt>

A significant moment occurred in Wijk aan Zee on Sunday when R Praggnanandhaa defeated D Gukesh in the playoffs to win the Tata Steel Chess Masters 2025 title. Both grandmasters encountered difficulties in Round 13, facing losses in their individual matches. Arjun Erigaisi showcased exceptional performance, achieving a quick win over Gukesh in only 31 moves, while Vincent Keymer outlasted Praggnanandhaa in a grueling seven-hour battle.

In the blitz playoffs, Gukesh started strong by winning the initial game, but Praggnanandhaa made an impressive recovery, winning the subsequent two games to secure the title. The result left Gukesh visibly distraught, his feelings evident on his face. Although he was the defending champion and had been leading the tournament earlier, a series of unfortunate results resulted in a tie-breaker situation, culminating in a devastating loss in the playoffs.

The crucial tie-breaker game concluded in a tense manner as Gukesh ran out of time, leaving him in a state of shock. His reaction, filled with astonishment, was unexpected both for the audience and the 18-year-old himself. He reclined in his chair, gazing at the ceiling, while Praggnanandhaa absorbed the unexpected ending.

In the Challengers section, GM Thai Dai Van Nguyen claimed victory. During the third tie-breaker game, Praggnanandhaa chose the London System, a tactic previously employed by Ding Liren. Initially, Gukesh seized a pawn advantage, but he overlooked a critical winning move—30…Bd6! —which allowed Praggnanandhaa to regain the pawn. The game reached an even position with both competitors maintaining a knight and three pawns each. However, as the pressure increased, Gukesh ultimately ran out of time, committing a significant blunder that sealed his loss.

After obtaining his victory, Praggnanandhaa shared his reflections, stating, “When I came here, I wanted to win the event. But the field was very strong. I didn’t really think about it much until yesterday. Can’t really express… I’m really happy. ”

Commenting on Arjun Erigaisi’s surprising win over Gukesh, he remarked, “I didn’t really expect (Arjun to beat Gukesh). Because at some point, it felt that Gukesh was actually better. When I saw the result (of Gukesh vs Arjun), I had already misplayed and I was in such a difficult position that I could not really do much than sit and defend. I didn’t think practically I had any chance in my own position. ”

His winnings include prize money and sponsorships. Now, he’s aiming to face the legendary Magnus Carlsen.
</excerpt>

The 18-year-old chess prodigy D Gukesh’s rise to superstardom has not only brought him global recognition but also a significant paycheck. The World Champion is reported to have earned over $1.5 million in the last year, surpassing the annual salary of the President of the United States.

As Chess.com reports, Gukesh’s winnings of the year run close to $15,77,842 – that is Rs 13.6 crore almost. He is in a very select group of chess players who earned more than a million dollars over the year. In comparison, the US President earns $400,000 annually as salary, though there are separate allowances for travelling and entertainment, Gukesh’s earnings, theoretically, seem to have raced ahead of US President’s remuneration during the last calendar year.

Significantly, this prize amount does not account for the cash prizes that Gukesh won through various state governments and benefactors. This chess star, an 18-year-old boy, has been touted to be the year’s biggest winner. It actually tops world-ranked giants such as Ding Liren and Alireza Firouzja and even world chess champion Magnus Carlsen.

The monumental win in December last year made Gukesh the youngest world chess champion by defeating Chinese GM Ding Liren in Game 14 of the World Chess Championships. Gukesh became the 18th GM and only the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to win the prestigious title.

Despite his historical victory, Gukesh remains unsatisfied. He already aims for the next target: meeting Magnus Carlsen, the chess world’s grandmaster, with whom Gukesh has not even had a checkmate in his career.

The internet quickly erupted with praise for the chess prodigy. One user wrote, “A champion with a sense of humour! You’ve made us proud, Gukesh!” Another commented, “What a brilliant win! You’re the future of Indian chess.” Fans were also touched by the emotional moment after the match when Gukesh shared a hug with his father, which many described as “heart-melting.”

A Gripping Final and Emotionally Charged Victory

The World Chess Championship match was a hard-fought battle that did not start equal because of the defending champion Ding Liren. His best chance would be to win at tiebreaker, and indeed an error gave it all to Gukesh, where he won to the victory, and in this way, was overcome with emotions at this final move; the final move was how he would lock up the opponent after which he fell weeping outside to the amazement of those surrounding and embracing his father-the tears.

Congratulations!

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) December 14, 2024

The 18-year-old Gukesh and reigning champion Ding were even as they approached the final game, with a tiebreak seemingly unavoidable. However, Gukesh capitalized on a critical mistake by Ding to secure the essential point. Musk conveyed his congratulations on X (formerly Twitter), in reaction to Gukesh’s celebratory message.

Gukesh, who was only seven years old when he witnessed Viswanathan Anand lose the world chess title to Magnus Carlsen in 2013, regarded the match as a pivotal moment in his chess journey.

“I was in the stands and I was looking through the glass box (where the players were), and I thought it would be so cool to be inside one day,” Gukesh recalled, referencing the tournament in Chennai. “When Magnus won, I felt a strong desire to be the one to reclaim the title for India. And this dream I had over 10 years ago has been the most significant thing in my life so far,” he elaborated. “I’ve been dreaming about… experiencing this moment for over 10 years. ”

Gukesh, recognized as a budding star since achieving the title of grandmaster at 12, entered the competition as the youngest challenger in history after winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year. At 18, he breaks Garry Kasparov’s record of 22 when the Russian legend captured his first world title in 1985.

Gukesh is now only the second Indian to attain the world championship title, after five-time champion Viswanathan Anand. Anand, who has mentored Gukesh, expressed his pride on X, stating, “It’s a proud moment for chess, a proud moment for India… and for me, a very personal moment of pride. ”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Gukesh, describing his accomplishment as *“the result of his unparalleled talent, hard work, and unwavering determination. ”* Modi highlighted the victory’s inspirational impact, stating, “His triumph has not only etched his name in the annals of chess history but has also inspired millions of young minds to dream big and pursue excellence. ”

Critics highlighted that such headlines reduce accomplished players, who represent their nations and cultures, to mere stereotypes, overshadowing their sportsmanship and achievements.

Many netizens expressed their displeasure, emphasising the need for responsible journalism, especially when covering international events that bring diverse cultures together. While some called the headline “insensitive,” others demanded an apology, asserting that chess is a game of intellect and respect, and such remarks detract from its essence. The incident serves as a reminder for media outlets to celebrate achievements without resorting to cultural clichés.

Indian chess prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju made history by becoming the youngest World Chess Champion at just 18, defeating China’s Ding Liren in a nail-biting FIDE World Chess Championship match in Singapore. The Chennai-born Grandmaster, who harboured dreams of this victory since the age of seven, achieved this milestone after a gruelling 14-game match, clinched by exploiting Ding’s critical mistake in the final game. This win not only crowned Gukesh the 18th World Chess Champion but also shattered Garry Kasparov’s record, set at age 22 in 1985.

Gukesh’s journey is a testament to talent nurtured by a robust support system. With over 85 Indian Grandmasters and a thriving chess culture, Gukesh’s rise reflects India’s dominance in the sport. Mentored by chess legend Viswanathan Anand and backed by sponsors like Westbridge Capital, his parents, and his school, Gukesh turned early challenges into victories, including winning the Candidates Tournament and leading India to Olympic gold. His disciplined lifestyle—complemented by meditation, swimming, and tennis—has fortified his focus and ambition.

For Gukesh, the world title is just the beginning. With aspirations to surpass Magnus Carlsen and a desire for a long, impactful career at the top, this young champion embodies the future of global chess.

</excerpt>

The World Chess Championship match between defending champion Ding Liren of China and India’s youngest-ever challenger, D Gukesh, featured another gripping contest in the seventh game on Tuesday.

Despite Gukesh’s strong position and notable advantage, the game concluded in a draw after an exhausting five hours and 22 minutes. The stalemate left the players tied at 3.5 points each, with four more points needed to secure the championship. The marathon match spanned 72 moves before both players agreed to the draw.

“The score is fine. Obviously, today was a missed chance. That is a bit of a disappointment, but he also missed some chances earlier in the match. So, I think it’s fair that we are here. The second half will be, of course, crucial.” – ??
A surprise move on his seventh turn caught Ding off guard, securing Gukesh a favorable position. He applied pressure through the center, advanced a dangerous passed pawn, and leveraged the advantage of the bishop pair to strengthen his stance. However, despite his promising position, Gukesh missed a critical opportunity to capitalize on his advantage, allowing Ding to fight his way back into contention.

Ding’s tenacity and resourceful play proved crucial as he defended resiliently, even with limited time on the clock. The game reached a pivotal moment on the 40th move when Ding lost a pawn, but Gukesh’s follow-up moves fell short of optimal, giving Ding the chance to equalize the position. As pawns were gradually traded off, Gukesh was left with a lone bishop, leading to an eventual draw.

The seventh game showcased an intense struggle between the two players, with Gukesh demonstrating his opening brilliance and Ding highlighting his exceptional defensive skills. While the game ended in a draw, the match remains finely balanced, promising an exhilarating finish in the games ahead.
