</excerpt>

A 72-year-old retired lawyer from Noida became a victim of an advanced cyber fraud, losing ₹3.29 crore after scammers kept her under so-called ‘digital arrest’ for nine days, the police said on Wednesday. The case is now registered at the Cybercrime Branch police station and is being actively investigated.

Scam Initiated with False Charges and Aadhaar Abuse Allegations

As per police, the ordeal started on June 10 when the woman from Sector 47 got a call on her landline. The caller claimed that her Aadhaar number was connected to four different bank accounts that were utilized for unlawful activities such as gambling, extortion, and the illicit purchase of weapons.

“She was informed that her Aadhaar number was being used in four bank accounts and funds were being spent on gambling, blackmailing, illicit buying of weapons, etc.,” said a police officer who did not wish to be identified.

Fraudsters Assumed Office of Police, Asked for Bank Details

The fraudsters are said to have provided her with an unknown number with which to call for procuring a no-objection certificate. When she made the call, she was flooded with calls from people assuming office of police personnel.

“The scams provided the victim with an unknown mobile number to get a no-objection certificate. When she called that number, she began receiving numerous calls from individuals who claimed to be police officers,” the officer further added.

Under duress and threat of legal action, the elderly woman provided her bank account information to the scammers and was convinced to encash her paycheck.
Victim Transferred Funds via RTGS in Five Bank Visits

Within a span of nine days, from June 16 to June 24, she made repeated visits to her bank and transferred ₹3.29 crore through five different RTGS transactions.

“The lone resident victim transferred ₹3.29 crore in five payments through RTGS after making bank visits. She realized she had been cheated after narrating the incident to her daughter,” said Cybercrime Branch station house officer Ranjeet Singh.

FIR Registered, Police Making Efforts to Track the Money

After she lodged her complaint, police registered an FIR on charges of cheating, personation, and under provisions of the IT Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The investigators are now making efforts to track the trail of money and catch the perpetrators.

Authorities have also warned citizens—particularly elderly citizens who live alone—to be careful of unsolicited calls, and to check identities before divulging any sensitive information or making any monetary decisions.

She alleged explicit messages, false accusations, and employer interference, urging action against online harassment.
</excerpt>

A woman from Gurugram, Gunisha Sahni, has accused a man from Uttar Pradesh, Harshit Gupta, of harassing her for two years. In a LinkedIn post, Sahni alleged that Gupta repeatedly sent her inappropriate and explicit messages and even contacted her employer with false claims, attempting to defame her.

Cybercrime Complaint Filed

After enduring persistent harassment, Sahni has now filed a cybercrime complaint against Gupta. She revealed that his actions had severely impacted her mental and physical well-being. Expressing her distress, she warned that if she were to take any extreme step, Gupta would be held responsible.

“Harshit Gupta, a fellow alumnus of Bennett University, has been relentlessly harassing me since 2023. He has not only sent me inappropriate messages without my consent but has also tried to tarnish my reputation by spreading false accusations. Most recently, he even harassed my employer with baseless claims,” Sahni stated.

She emphasized that she had ignored his actions for a long time, but the situation had escalated beyond online harassment, directly affecting her well-being. She assured that she would take further legal action to put an end to it.

Pattern of False Accusations

Sahni further claimed that she was not the only one facing such harassment from Gupta. According to her, he has a pattern of targeting individuals and contacting their employers with false allegations.

“If anything happens to me, it will be solely due to the relentless harassment I have endured at the hands of Harshit Gupta. I refuse to let my career and reputation be ruined by malicious lies,” she asserted.

She urged people to report Gupta’s profile if he approached them with baseless accusations. Expressing gratitude to those who supported her, she stressed that no one should have to defend themselves against fabricated claims.

Screenshots Reveal Disturbing Messages

Sahni shared screenshots of the messages sent by Gupta. On May 18, he asked for her number, and upon receiving no response, he sent another message two days later, making inappropriate remarks.

In another message on May 20, he wrote:
“Never become an escort, you’ll remain poor because no client would want you.”

Gupta’s Counter-Accusation

Taking the matter further, Gupta publicly accused Sahni of sexual harassment in a LinkedIn post, alleging that she had harassed him for years. He even reached out to Anirban Sengupta, the founder of Nirvana Digital, where Sahni is employed, requesting her resignation based on unverified claims.

In response, Sengupta clarified that the accusations were related to events before Sahni joined the company and stated that they could not verify or intervene in personal matters. He advised Gupta to address any workplace concerns through legal channels.

Sahni concluded her statement by urging people to stand against such harassment and report Gupta’s actions. She emphasized that false accusations and online harassment should never be tolerated.

In a heartbreaking incident in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, a woman named Malti Verma died of a heart attack after receiving an extortion call. On September 30, she was contacted via WhatsApp by a man impersonating a police officer. The caller falsely claimed that her daughter had been arrested in a sex trafficking case.

Threats and Immediate Panic

The caller threatened to release an explicit video of her daughter unless Malti paid Rs. 1 lakh. Distressed by this alarming situation, she reached out to her son, Divyanshu, asking him to send the money quickly to prevent her daughter from facing legal troubles.

Suspicion and Investigation

Divyanshu became suspicious after hearing about the call. Upon checking the number, he discovered it was from Pakistan, confirming it was a scam. “After she got the call from the man, she panicked and called me, and I asked her for the number from which she had received the call. When I checked the number, I found that it had a +92 prefix and I told her it was a scam. She was still very anxious and started feeling unwell,” Divyanshu explained. To reassure his mother, he told her that he had already spoken with his sister, who was safe at college.

Decline in Health

Unfortunately, the stress from the situation took a severe toll on Malti’s health. After coming home from school around 4:00 PM, she began to feel unwell. She was taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.

Efforts to Save Her

A video circulated online showing neighbors rushing to Malti’s aid after she suffered a heart attack. The footage depicts individuals carrying her to a car to take her to the hospital.

Family’s Response and Police Investigation

Malti’s daughter recounted, “I got a call from my brother who asked me where I was. He told me to give him a video call after I informed him that I was in college.” Malti’s husband explained the distressing situation, stating, “The cause for this was that she had received a call stating that her daughter had been caught in a sex racket and the caller had demanded Rs. 1 lakh from her. She got very worried because of this and died 15 minutes after she reached home. We are investigating the number from which the call came and will take action,” a senior police official confirmed.

Rising Concerns Over Cybercrime,

In light of this tragedy, the Congress party highlighted the increasing prevalence of such extortion cases, referring to them as “digital arrests.” They emphasized, “This is not the first incident of ‘digital arrest’ in the country. Such cases are coming to light every day. Cyber criminals are continuously harming people.”

The arrested individual has been identified as Harsh Bansal, 29, a resident of Dadri, Greater Noida. Bansal serves as the city president of BJP Yuva Morcha.

The police had frozen Rs 2.8 crore of the stolen funds and sealed the CA office of Shubham Bansal in Ghaziabad. They also reported that Harsh was arrested from Lal Kuan Road in Ghaziabad on Thursday. Harsh admitted to using Rs 6 lakh, which he received as a commission from the fraudsters, to pay off his debts. Additionally, police officials indicated that Shubham Bansal is currently on the run in connection with the case.

The police have now included sections 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 120 B (criminal conspiracy), and 201 (disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code in the case. Earlier, on July 10, a case was registered under sections 420 (cheating and dishonesty) of the IPC and 66C (fraudulently or dishonestly using an electronic signature) of the IT Act at the cybercrime branch police station.

During a routine account reconciliation on June 17, a discrepancy of Rs 3 crore was detected. Bank officials initially suspected a technical error and chose to wait for a day. However, when a similar issue arose on June 18, revealing a discrepancy of about Rs 2 crore, the matter was escalated on June 19 and reported to the police by the IT manager of the Nainital Bank branch located in Noida, Sector-62, according to officers.

</excerpt>

As the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) PG 2024 approaches, a social media post has generated significant concern among candidates and netizens. With just four days left before the examination, a post dated August 7 on X (formerly Twitter) by user Dr. Dhruv Chauhan has raised alarms over a potential question paper leak.

The post highlights claims from various Telegram pages reportedly offering to sell NEET PG question papers. Dr. Chauhan’s post stated, “Hundreds of Telegram pages claiming to sell NEET PG papers should be on the radar of cybercrime and intelligence agencies, as these might or might not have the papers which need investigation.” He included screenshots of conversations from group chats and individuals allegedly discussing prices to ‘book slots’ for leaked materials.

Hundreds of Telegram pages claiming to sale NEET PG papers , these frauds should be on Radar of Cyber crime and intelligence bureau because they might or might not have the papers which needs to be investigated.

Recieved these SS from some followers@CBIHeadquarters @JPNadda pic.twitter.com/TMWpSp1eo8

— Dr.Dhruv Chauhan (@DrDhruvchauhan) August 7, 2024

One screenshot revealed a group named ‘NEET-PG LEAKED MATERIALS’ with over 20,600 subscribers, discussing prices for the leaked material. According to the messages, the cost for accessing the leaked material was ₹75,000, with a ₹35,000 advance required. The messages also claimed that the materials would be provided one day before the exam.

Hundreds of Telegram pages claiming to sale NEET PG papers , these frauds should be on Radar of Cyber crime and intelligence bureau because they might or might not have the papers which needs to be investigated.

The post has sparked widespread concern and debate among netizens. Some expressed skepticism, questioning the authenticity of the claims and fearing that the whole scenario might be a scam to exploit candidates. Dr. Raj K. Bhagat argued, “It’s unlikely that the paper can be prepared just 2 hours before the exam. The claim that the exam materials are prepared just before the exam is baseless.” Others, like Dr. Yash Oza, warned that the alleged leak might be a fraud intended to deceive students.

Adding to the tension, the All FMGs Association (AFA) recently reported the potential leak of a confidential letter from the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), which oversees the NEET PG. This letter reportedly included sensitive details about the exam’s schedule, mode, and centers, raising further concerns about the integrity of the examination process.

As the examination date approaches, the lack of an official response from NBEMS has left many anxious. The situation underscores the urgent need for robust measures to ensure the security and fairness of the NEET PG 2024 exam. Will authorities take swift action to address these concerns before the exam day? Only time will tell.

</excerpt>

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday released a book titled “Cyber Encounters” at St. Joseph’s Academy, Rajpur Road.

DGP Uttarakhand Ashok Kumar and former DRDO scientist OP Manocha authored a book which has been praised by CM Dhami for its relevance to an important subject. The book analyzes cyber crimes and draws from true incidents, offering insights that will help readers avoid falling victim to cyber crimes. CM Dhami lauded the authors and the publisher, Prabhat Prakashan, for their efforts. The book not only raises awareness through true stories but also entertains readers, inspiring them to take measures to protect themselves from cybercrime on each page.

The CM emphasized that cybercrime is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, and the book authored by the state’s DGP enhances public awareness of this challenge. With the rapid development of technology, the rate of cybercrime is also increasing, leading to an ongoing cat-and-mouse game between law enforcement and criminals, with both parties trying to outsmart each other. The rising trend of cybercrime highlights the fact that criminals are constantly devising new techniques. To counter this, the police are also continually improving their methods. However, we as individuals can protect ourselves from these technical crimes by being vigilant and aware.

“There is a need to keep a close eye on people who post false information and spread rumours on social media like YouTube, Twitter, Facebook that leads to fights, riots and brings disrepute to the police department,” the statement said.

“Similarly, there is a need to find those involved in cybercrimes such as drug sales, sexual crimes, money laundering on the internet.”

A team led by the superintendent of police, the cyber-crime wing, will be responsible for nine cities and 37 districts that fall under the purview of various police jurisdictions.

“The team will act swiftly to identify miscreants spreading fake posts on social media at an earlier stage, disable their social media accounts and register cybercrime cases,” the police department’s statement said.
