In an intriguing video that has recently taken social media by storm, Aman Singh, a popular crew member working for Danish shipping company Myresque, explains how massive ships are halted without traditional brakes. Singh, who has amassed a following of 1.2 million on Instagram, often shares captivating facts about maritime life and how ships function. In his latest viral video, he reveals how ships handle stopping—a topic that has piqued the curiosity of many viewers worldwide.

The Truth About “Braking” at Sea

In response to a follower’s question about whether high-speed ships have brakes, Singh clarified that ships don’t have conventional braking systems like cars or bikes. Instead, they rely on careful speed control to come to a stop. Large ships typically move at around 17 to 18 kilometers per hour, and stopping them is a gradual process. If a ship needs to halt, the crew initiates the process nearly two hours in advance, slowly decreasing the speed. Once in the desired location, the anchor is lowered to stabilize the vessel and bring it to a complete stop. This unique stopping method is a fascinating revelation for many, given that ships travel on water without brakes.

</excerpt>

Eight crew members of the ship involved in the Francis Scott Key Bridge incident in Baltimore have finally returned home after being stranded on the vessel for three months. The ship, named Dali, departed Baltimore’s port on Monday with only four of the original 21 crew members still on board. Assisted by four tugboats, the 948ft (289m) Dali made its way to Norfolk, Virginia, in a journey expected to last between 16 to 20 hours.

The incident occurred on March 26, resulting in the tragic deaths of six repair workers on the bridge. Approximately 50,000 tonnes of debris had to be cleared, and the Dali was relocated to port before the shipping channel at the Port of Baltimore could fully reopen in June.

The majority of the crew, all except one of whom are Indian nationals, were unable to leave the ship as it remained in the channel. They were considered witnesses and lacked valid visas or shore passes to enter the United States.

Darrel Wilson, spokesperson for Synergy Marine, the ship’s management company, confirmed that eight crew members have now returned home, with two more expected to depart the US soon. He noted that four original crew members remained onboard to assist with moving the vessel to Norfolk before returning to Baltimore.

Recently, Synergy Marine announced that the remaining crew members would stay behind to aid with the investigation. Baltimore withdrew a petition that initially sought to prevent any crew members from leaving until they were questioned. A resolution involving the city, the ship’s owner, and its management company allowed some crew members to depart, although they are still obligated to be available for depositions even after leaving the US.

The crew had been interviewed by the Department of Justice, and subsequently, investigators determined there was no reason to keep them in the United States. The National Transportation Safety Board disclosed that the Dali experienced multiple power failures leading up to the collision with the bridge. The crash is currently under investigation by the US Coast Guard and the FBI.

Authorities anticipate the Francis Scott Key Bridge will be reconstructed by 2028, with an estimated cost of approximately $1.9 billion (£1.5 billion). Baltimore has resisted efforts by the Dali’s owner to limit liability to $43 million (£33.9 million).

</excerpt>

Kareena Kapoor Khan believes that the box office triumph of her recent film “Crew” signifies the diminishing gender bias in the film industry. She expressed her happiness over the heist comedy breaking barriers typically associated with female-led films.

“Crew,” featuring Tabu and Kriti Sanon alongside Kareena, narrates the story of three air hostesses taking charge of their destiny after their airline faces bankruptcy. Directed by Rajesh A Krishnan, the movie premiered on March 29 and has grossed over Rs 150 crore.

Looking ahead, Kareena stated her commitment to projects that challenge conventional norms. She emphasized the importance of impactful storytelling in entertainment.

“Films are a form of entertainment, and ‘Crew’ serves as an example with its powerful message. It’s gratifying to see that today, there’s a diminishing gender bias. Breaking norms is essential,” Kareena shared in an interview with PTI.

She added, “The success of ‘Crew,’ with its three female leads, surpassing Rs 150 crore at the box office, validates this. It’s not about whether it’s a hero or a heroine leading a film; it’s about performance and content. We aim to continue this trend. I will always opt for roles that captivate, yet entertain. I’m thrilled that ‘Crew’ has initiated conversations about women challenging box office conventions.”

In another development, UNICEF India appointed Kareena as its new National Ambassador. Reflecting on her decade-long association with the organization, Kareena noted personal growth from her interactions with children, teachers, and parents across India.

“As a Celebrity Advocate for UNICEF since 2014, I’ve had transformative experiences. Being appointed as the National Ambassador is an honor. My journey with UNICEF has been enriching, filled with remarkable memories,” she expressed.

Kareena emphasized her commitment to utilizing her celebrity status to advocate for children’s rights, education, and health.

“As a public figure, I recognize the influence I have. I aim to leverage my voice to garner support for children’s causes nationwide. Parents play a crucial role in understanding their children’s needs. I’m proud to have a platform and intend to utilize it to advocate for children’s rights,” Kareena affirmed.

She underscored the significance of holistic child development, beyond traditional academics, emphasizing the importance of nurturing individual skills and talents.

“Child development extends beyond academic learning. Encouraging children to explore various skills and arts is crucial. My focus will encompass all aspects of child development,” Kareena emphasized.

Looking ahead, Kareena is eagerly awaiting the release of her upcoming films, including “Singham Again” and “The Buckingham Murders,” where she plays a detective. She expressed enthusiasm for portraying strong, women-centric characters in these projects.

</excerpt>

The past few weeks have been quite eventful for movie buffs. They have been treated to various films from different genres. While Crew was a light-hearted comedy-drama, Maidaan catered to those fond of sports sagas. Similarly, Madgaon Express appealed to the younger audience. Swatantra Veer Savarkar, on the other hand, celebrated the life of a braveheart. Rounding up the list of recent releases was Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, an actioner designed to woo the masses.

However, not all these films were accepted by the audience. Here is a look at the box office performances of five major recent releases.

Swatantra Veer Savarkar

Swatantra Veer Savarkar, starring Randeep Hooda, hit screens on March 22. The biographical drama revolves around the life journey of Indian freedom fighter and reformer Damodar Sarvarkar, popularly known as Veer Sarvarkar.

Shot on a budget of 20 crore, the film reportedly earned Rs 23.66 crore at the box office during its theatrical run to emerge as an ‘average’ grosser.

Directed by Randeep Hooda, the film features him as Vinayak Damodar Savarkar alongside Ankita Lokhande, Amit Sial, and R Bhakti. It explores India’s freedom struggle through Savarkar’s eyes.

Crew

Crew, which hit screens on March 29, received a favorable response during the first weekend of its release.

The film is made on a budget of 75 crores. It brings together Tabu, Kareena Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Diljit Dosanjh. Kapil Sharma makes a special appearance in the comedy-drama. According to Film Exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, the film has done very well at the box office.

“Crew has touched the 50 crore mark,” he stated.

Based on these figures, the verdict for the film is ‘hit’.

Directed by Rajesh Krishnan, the flick revolves around three flight attendants who face financial challenges because of their work situation. As things unfold, they get drawn into a complex web of deception and lies.

Madgaon Express

Madgaon Express, which hit the screens on March 22, made a decent impact at the box office despite a limited release. Rathi stated that the film continues to grow even after 30 days of its release.

“Madgaon Express is currently at around 30 crores and still taking on!” he said.

‘Madgaon Express’ was shot on a budget of Rs 20 crore. Its box office verdict is ‘average’.

The film features Divyenndu as Dodo, Pratik Gandhi as Pinku, Avinash Tiwary as Ayush, Nora Fatehi as Tasha, Upendra Limaye as Mendoza Bhai, and Chhaya Kadam as Kanchan Kombdi among others. The story centres on three childhood friends who grow up imagining a ‘trip to Goa.’.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan

‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’, starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff, hit the theatres on April 11 amid fanfare. Around 85,000 tickets were pre-booked for the film.

Film Exhibitor Akshaye Rathi suggested the film has decent potential.

“Bade Miyan Chote Miyan earned in between Rs 45 to Rs 48 crores domestically during the first week of release and is now heading towards the second week with many shows around the country,” Rathi said.

Shot on a budget of Rs 350 crores, the film has caught viewers’ attention. The final verdict is awaited but it is likely to end up as a ‘flop’.

‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ is an action entertainer featuring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff as soldiers on a mission to recover a stolen AI weapon from a masked foe. The cast includes Prithviraj, Manushi Chhillar, and Alaya F.

Maidaan

‘Maidaan’ hit theaters on April 11 and opened to a decent response at the ticket window. The biographical sports drama has been shot on a budget of Rs. 250 crores.

Rathi mentions that the film is still earning money. “Maidaan is somewhere between 30 to 40 crores and is heading in its second week. It is taking over the scoreboard! The word-of-mouth is great,” he said

The final verdict for ‘Maidaan’ is awaited but it might end up as ‘below average’

Based on a true story, ‘Maidaan’ is directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma and stars Ajay Devgn in the role of Syed Abdul Rahim, a man who dedicated his life to football. </excerpt>

The film ‘Crew,’ featuring Kareena Kapoor, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon, has been in theaters for two weeks and has garnered much affection from viewers. Trupti Khamkar, portraying a police officer in the movie, recently discussed her shooting experience, expressing that it was a significant opportunity to work alongside numerous stars. She had many scenes with Diljit and commended the actor, describing him as “spiritual.”

Trupti described Diljit as a devout follower of Lord Shiva, often reciting ‘Om Namah Shivay.’ Speaking to The Free Press Journal, she expressed, “I would definitely like to work with Diljit again. He is the most God-like person I’ve ever met. He comes with the most amount of humility. He is a Shiv bhakt and he constantly chants Om Namah Shivay. When you are around him, you feel like you are in a temple, near God. He is very spiritual.”

Trupti expressed her admiration for Diljit, stating, “Diljit is, of course, an amazing actor, and he is never not there. Even in between scenes, he looks into your eyes. I want to be like him. If I become only 10 per cent of what he is, mujhe lagega maine duniya jeet li hai (I’ll fell like I have done something). He is ‘Dil-Jeet’ in a real sense.”

In the same interview, Trupti mentioned that during filming, director Rajesh A Krishnan assured her that her role was “even bigger” than Diljit Dosanjh’s, although she initially took it as a joke. “During the shoot, the director (Rajesh A Krishnan) told me that my role is very important, even bigger than Diljit Dosanjh. I thought he was just fooling me and wanted to make me happy. But when I saw the film, I was surprised and that is when I understood that he was not lying,” she shared. Diljit has a cameo appearance in the film.

</excerpt>

‘Crew’, which hit screens on March 29, has emerged as a commercial success. The film follows three flight attendants who get trapped in an unexpected situation of never-ending struggle. The movie features Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Kriti Sanon in the lead along with Diljit Dosanjh and Kapil Sharma.

The three leading actresses have made their mark in Indian cinema. Tabu began her acting career as a teenager in Dev Anand’s ‘Hum Naujawan’ in 1985. However, she played her first leading role in the Telugu film ‘Coolie No.1’ (1991) for which she received the ‘Filmfare award for Best Female Debut.’ Kareena Kapoor Khan began her career with ‘Refugee’ (2000). Meanwhile, Kriti made her Bollywood debut with ‘Heropanti’ in 2014.

Interestingly, there are some striking similarities between the three ladies in terms of their selection of roles and career graphs.

No stranger to Female-Centric Roles

Tabu impressed critics with ‘Chandni Bar’ where she played the role of a bar dancer in Mumbai’s red-light district. The film explored the themes of poverty, exploitation and violence.

Similarly, Kareena’s role as a sex worker in ‘Chameli’ (2003) elevated her career. She later picked many bold characters such as Rosi’ in ‘Talaash; The Answer Lies Within’ and ‘Mahi Arora in ‘Heroine’.

Likewise, Kriti raised the bar with her performance in ‘Mimi’ where she played the role of a surrogate mother. The film was widely acclaimed and helped her win the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and the National Film Award for Best Actress.

Conveying a message through their work

Some of the films chosen by these ladies were ahead of their time. One such film that Tabu did was ‘Aamdani Athanni Kharcha Rupaiya’. This was long before female-centric films became a thing in modern Indian cinema. She played Meena, a helpless housewife-turned-independent woman who chooses to stand tall in the face of domestic violence. She conveyed this message well on the big screen.

On the other hand, Bebo in ‘Jab We Met’ played the evergreen character of Geet, a charming and bubbly girl who was also fiercely independent. The film is one of the most emotionally rich romantic comedies of Indian cinema. Kriti’s ‘Dilwale’, apart from being a box office hit was also a bold choice. For Kriti, ‘Teri Baton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’ featured her as Sifra, a robot that again is a difficult character to pull off. Kriti, to her credit, did justice to it and experimented within the commercial space

Breaking Taboos

Tabu in ‘Chandini Bar’, Kareena’s role in ‘Chameli’ and Kriti’s performance in ‘Mimi’ are fine examples of how these actresses have picked stories that challenge societal norms. The clean portrayals of a bar dancer, sex worker, and surrogate mother tried to pave the way for progressive thinking.

Tabu, Kareena and Kriti have defined the three generations of Indian cinema. They have worked devotionally and shined bright. Their roles are a throwback to the strong female characters that Indian cinema has witnessed in the past. Their choice of characters and stories has raised the bar time and again. Not only have the ladies embraced the tricky roles but also have been a part of many commercial successes such as Kareena Kapoor in ‘Veerey Di Wedding’ and Kriti in ‘Dilwale’, which falls among the highest-grossing Indian films.

‘Crew’ is another fine addition to their filmography and should help them scale greater heights. The film is currently playing in theatres.

</excerpt>

Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson on Saturday issued an apology in connection with a man who allegedly peed at an elderly woman traveling in business class on an Air India flight on 26 November 2022.

Meanwhile, the airline has also issued show cause notices to four of its cabin crew and one pilot and de-rostered them pending investigations.

Moreover, CEO Campbell Wilson issued a statement and said, “any improper behavior on board to authorities at the earliest even if the matter appears to be resolved”.

CEO Wilson in the letter to Air India employees stated that necessary actions against those people who will not follow the flight rules will be taken.

“This week has, ‘regrettably’, been dominated by media headlines of which you are no doubt familiar. The repulsion felt by the affected passenger is totally understandable and we share her distress,” Campbell said.

“Whilst the story is more complicated than has been reported, there are clearly some lessons we can and must learn. Most importantly is that, if an incident on our aircraft involves improper behavior of such magnitude, we must report it to authorities at the earliest opportunity, even if we genuinely believe that the matter has been settled between the parties involved. The same applies in the case of passengers deemed to meet the threshold of ‘Unruly’,” the letter reads.

“We must also be clear on the standard of behavior that is expected on our aircraft and take firm, decisive, and timely action against those who do not comply,” Campbell said.

The CEO further stated, “Though there are numerous cases in which we have done exactly this, I have asked that these, and other relevant aspects of the Safety and Emergency Procedures Manual, be immediately reiterated by operating departments and reinforced in recurrent training, and I ask each of you to reflect on what you would do if faced with such situations. As in any other area, knowledge and preparation underpin confidence and outcome.”

Earlier on Friday Shankar Mishra was arrested by the Delhi Police from Bengaluru.

US-based financial service company Wells Fargo where Shankar Mishra used to work they have terminated him.

“Wells Fargo holds employees to the highest standards of professional and personal behaviors and we find these allegations deeply disturbing. This individual has been terminated from Wells Fargo. We are cooperating with law enforcement and ask that any additional inquiries be directed to them,” the company stated.

However, on 4 January against the accused FIR was registered by the woman co-passenger to Air India.
