</excerpt>

Scientists of China have found 22 new viruses in bats, two of which are deadly and similar to the deadly Nipah and Hendra viruses. Scientists took samples from 142 bats between 2017 and 2021 in the province of Yunnan. They identified the viruses from bat kidneys through genetic sequencing, organs that are closely associated with urine production.

Experts are concerned that bat urine will spread to fruit or water, causing another outbreak. The research presents severe warnings, particularly after the world experienced the destructive Covid-19 pandemic that also emerged in China.

Two Viruses Raise Red Flags

Among 22 viruses discovered, two are of grave concern. The two are nearly identical to henipaviruses, a virus family that has been known to induce severe brain swelling and respiratory illness in humans. Nipah and Hendra viruses, both members of this family, have previously induced fatal outbreaks.

In a few instances, the death rate has been as high as 75%. Researchers have recently given the new viruses the name Yunnan bat henipavirus 1 and 2. They are the first complete henipavirus genomes to be found in Chinese bats.

Why the Discovery Matters?

The discovery happens just a few years after Covid-19 first emerged in Wuhan, China. The Wuhan Institute of Virology had been under intense global scrutiny over potential laboratory connections to the coronavirus pandemic. And now, with yet another high-risk virus discovery made in China, public health experts are on guard once again.

Molecular virologist Vinod Balasubramaniam termed the new discoveries “concerning.” He reasoned that because the viruses were in the kidneys of the bats, there was a very good chance of spreading them via urine-contaminated fruit or water.

Spillover Risks Still Exist

Scientists located these bats roosting close to fruit orchards in inhabited villages. This creates concern for a spillover into humans or animals. The viruses have 52–57% genetic material shared with other identified henipaviruses. Previous outbreaks, such as the Bangladeshi Nipah virus outbreak, were also associated with bat-contaminated fruit sap. Yunnan being close to Malaysia, where the initial Nipah outbreak was reported, has made experts even more concerned.

Ecologist Dr. Alison Peel explained that not all henipaviruses infect humans. Nevertheless, she emphasized the need for testing in laboratories to determine their level of threat. As yet, no cases among humans have been recorded, but scientists are calling for preventive action. The world cannot wait for another unexpected outbreak.

Health officials stress vigilance, mask use, and prompt testing to curb transmission and protect vulnerable groups.
</excerpt>

A few Asian nations, such as India, Thailand, and Indonesia, have seen a surge in Covid-19 cases since mid-May, triggering concerns about the spread of more infectious coronavirus variants.

India now has more than 5,700 active cases, with four fatalities reported over the last 24 hours. Hospitalisation is low, but the Indian health ministry advises citizens to exercise caution, get tested early if they develop symptoms, and keep wearing masks in public spaces.

In Thailand, Covid hospitalisations have increased since early June, with at least one recent fatality. The country recorded around 28,300 cases in just the first two days of June, mainly concentrated in Bangkok. So far in 2025, Thailand has reported 70 deaths, primarily in urban centers. The death rate remains low, indicating the virus has not grown more lethal.

Indonesia has warned healthcare professionals to remain vigilant and double down on Covid surveillance as infections rise, fueled by new, highly infectious but less lethal variants. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin pointed out that although cases are increasing, the variants are less severe.

Health officials closely monitor Omicron subvariants LF.7 and NB.1.8.1, which are suspected to be the cause of the recent spike in Asia. The recombinant variant existing in nations such as Thailand, Australia, and the US, has been found with a high capability of binding to human cell receptors, possibly facilitating infection more easily.

They share common symptoms such as tiredness, sore throat, stuffy nose, and gastrointestinal symptoms. The World Health Organization verifies that the vaccines available today still offer protection against severe disease due to the variants.

In India, half of new cases are still caused by the older JN.1 strain. The majority are mild and clear up with simple over-the-counter medications. However, susceptible people, particularly elderly or those with underlying medical conditions, are recommended to get hospital treatment if they get severe symptoms like breathlessness or oxygen levels less than 95%.

Health experts stress prompt doctor consultation for individuals with severe fatigue or less than 95% oxygen saturation.

‘Worse Than Covid’: Expert Warns of Toxic Fungus Smuggled From China

<excerpt>Gordon Chang claims a toxic fungus smuggled from China into the U.S. could trigger a disaster worse than Covid. However, agricultural experts downplay fears, saying the fungus is manageable and not effective as a weapon, despite national security concerns.
</excerpt>

A leading China expert has sounded alarm about what he thinks may be an impending agroterrorism danger posed by a poisonous crop fungus smuggled from China into the US. Gordon G Chang, the author of China Is Going to War, opined that if nothing is done, the consequences might exceed the effect of Covid-19.

Speaking to Fox News, Chang stated, “The only way you can stop this is to cut diplomatic relations with China. And I know people say that’s extreme, but we are being inundated.”

Suspected Smuggling Incident

Two Chinese citizens, Zunyong Liu and Yunqing Jian, have been charged with importing Fusarium graminearum, a recognized crop-injuring fungus, into the United States in July of 2024, according to a criminal complaint by the FBI. The Department of Justice reported the fungus to be a harmful pathogen that can be weaponised as part of agricultural terrorism. The fungus is recognized to induce “head blight” on crops and causes billions of dollars in economic losses globally.

Agricultural Experts Disagree on Severity

Still, agricultural scientists have protested the bioterror theory. The fungus has been in the U.S. for more than a century and does not pose much danger to public safety, according to experts, as reported by Reuters. Fungicides, resistant crop varieties, and regular testing can help contain its effect effectively.

It would be a rather bad weapon as a weapon,” said Jessica Rutkoski, crop sciences professor and geneticist at the University of Illinois.

Scientists explained that the fungus primarily infests wheat and barley crops in rainy seasons, and the poisonous byproduct, vomitoxin, is heavily regulated through the food supply chain. “We have a long tradition of controlling epidemics of scab,” added Andrew Friskop, plant pathologist at North Dakota State University.

‘Worse Than Covid’

In spite of assurances from science, Chang delivered a dire prophecy: “We are going to get hit someday. We are going to get hit really hard, not with Covid, not with fentanyl, but maybe with something worse.” He also suggested that the couple in question be held at Guantanamo Bay, drawing parallels with an act of war.

Chang also emphasized China’s continued belligerent stance under President Xi Jinping, stating, “Xi Jinping incessantly talks about going to war and is mobilizing all of Chinese society to go to war.” He quoted the People’s Daily in 2019, which declared a “people’s war” on America.

What they are doing with their strident anti-Americanism is creating a rationale to strike our country,” he warned. Chang also remembered the time when Americans in all 50 states received unwanted seeds from China in 2020, and it could have been done to insert invasive species to U.S. agriculture.

Although the incident has been raising alarm among geopolitical commentators such as Chang, agricultural scientists have been optimistic about the safety procedures already in place and have minimized concerns of a biological attack. The controversy nevertheless indicates tensions between scientific estimates and national security narratives.

Covid Strikes Delhi Again: 3rd Death Amid Rising Cases

<excerpt>Delhi reported its third Covid-19 death since May amid a spike to 457 active cases. A 22-year-old woman with pre-existing conditions succumbed. Hospitals are on alert, and residents are urged to maintain precautions as respiratory infections may rise during monsoon.
</excerpt>

Delhi has reported its third Covid-19 death since May 2025, amid a worrying uptick in daily cases. As per the data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the national capital logged 64 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, pushing the total number of active cases to 457.

The deceased has been identified as a 22-year-old woman with a history of serious medical conditions, including Pulmonary Koch’s (a form of tuberculosis), lower respiratory tract infection, Covid-19 pneumonia, and shock. She reportedly succumbed to Type 1 respiratory failure, a condition often associated with critical respiratory illnesses.

This death comes just days after Delhi had shown a slight dip in daily Covid cases. On Tuesday, the case count had dropped to 393 from 483 the previous day. However, Wednesday witnessed a fresh spike, marking a concerning trend in the city’s ongoing battle with the virus.

Hospitals on Alert

In response to the rising number of infections, the Delhi government has issued an advisory to all hospitals and healthcare facilities, urging them to enhance preparedness. The advisory includes directives to ensure the availability of hospital beds, oxygen supply, essential medicines, and Covid-19 vaccines.

Officials have emphasized the need for vigilance, especially in light of emerging variants and the return of sporadic cases in other states as well. Hospitals have also been instructed to maintain functional isolation wards and strengthen testing facilities to detect and contain infections at the earliest.

39 Recoveries Offer Slight Relief

Meanwhile, 39 patients were reported to have recovered or been discharged on Tuesday, offering some relief. Still, health authorities are keeping a close watch on trends and transmission patterns.

The new surge in cases, though still not alarming, highlights the fact that we should still be cautious and take health measures in advance because the city is going through ta rainy spurt, which is generally related to a rise in respiratory infections. Delhi residebts are still advised to follow necessary precautions like maintaining hand hygiene and wearing masks in crowded places.

</excerpt>

The active cases of Covid-19 in India on Saturday exceeded the 3,000 level and rose to 3,395, with the top number of infections being reported from Kerala at 1,336 followed by Maharashtra and Delhi, Union health ministry data released today revealed.

First Time in Over Two Years

This is likely the first time in more than two years that India’s active Covid case count has crossed the 3,000 level.

Four deaths were reported in the country in the past 24 hours, one each from Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, as per the figures made public on Saturday.

State-Wise Breakdown of Active Cases of Covid

Maharashtra has 467 cases, Delhi 375, Gujarat 265, Karnataka 234, West Bengal 205, Tamil Nadu 185 and Uttar Pradesh 117 cases.

There were 257 cases active in the nation on May 22. The number increased to 1,010 by May 26 and to 3,395 on Saturday. In the past 24 hours, 685 new cases and four deaths have been reported, as per the data.

Last Surge Was in April 2023

The nation had last exceeded 3,000 active cases on April 1, 2023, with the case burden at 3,084, based on a Worldometer index of Covid-19 cases.

“We have been closely monitoring the situation. At this moment, overall, we should monitor, be vigilant but there is no cause to worry,” the Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research, Dr Rajiv Behl said, as quoted by PTI.

Omicron Subvariants of Covid Detected

Four subvariants of Omicron, LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB.1.8.1, have been detected, the first three being more common in the caseload, said Behl.

Five individuals have lost their lives in Kerala due to Covid. However, the majority of deaths in January 2025 have occurred in Maharashtra, with a total of 7 individuals who have passed away. A total of 22 deaths have occurred in all the states combined. From January 2025, a total of 1,170 individuals have either been cured or discharged for Covid.

Delhi and Maharashtra follow. The government has ramped up testing and surveillance as deaths reach 22 nationwide. Over 1,170 people have recovered since January 2025.
</excerpt>

India is seeing a fresh spike in Covid-19 cases, with active cases reaching 2,710, according to the latest figures released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday. Kerala has the highest number of active cases, followed by Maharashtra and Delhi.

Up to the last update, Kerala recorded 1,147 active Covid cases, a rise of 227 from Thursday. Maharashtra is second at 424 active cases, and Delhi has 294 infections. Gujarat has 223 cases.

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka states have both reported 148 active cases, with West Bengal having 116 active cases. Altogether, 511 new cases have been reported since yesterday. Interestingly, Sikkim has no active cases.

Covid-related Deaths Reported

Delhi has reported two Covid-related fatalities since January 2025. One of them was a 60-year-old woman who died from Acute Intestinal Obstruction. Kerala has also seen five deaths due to Covid till now. The death toll has been the highest in Maharashtra with seven people reported dead. A total of 22 Covid-related deaths have been reported from across the country.

A total of 1,170 people have recovered or been discharged after being treated for Covid since January 2025. Kerala alone has 338 cases. In Delhi, 214 individuals have recovered, while Tamil Nadu has 183 recoveries.

Government Steps Up Efforts

As a reaction to the sudden surge in infections, the government has stepped up the monitoring of its spread. Surveillance has been intensified, health protocols are being re-enforced, and citizens, particularly high-risk groups, are being urged to be regularly updated with their vaccinations. A number of states have also issued health advisories and boosted Covid tests.

Covid Update: 4 Omicron Subvariants Found in India, Govt Urges Caution

<excerpt>Covid cases rise in India with 4 Omicron subvariants found; health authorities confirm symptoms are mild and manageable.
</excerpt>

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) informed on Monday that the recent Covid 19 variants reported from India are exhibiting mild symptoms. The variants in question are four subvariants of Omicron: LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1.

Government Urges Caution, Not Panic

ICMR has requested people, especially those with underlying health conditions or low immunity, to remain cautious. However, the council emphasized that there is no need to panic at this point, as the symptoms are mild.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized the LF.7 and NB.1.8 subvariants as “Variants Under Monitoring” rather than “Variants of Concern” or “Variants of Interest.” This indicates that while the variants are being closely observed, they do not pose an immediate serious threat.

Government Surveillance and Preparedness for Covid

ICMR Director General, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, mentioned that surveillance is ongoing to understand the reasons behind the increase in cases. He assured that the government is prepared to handle the situation. The government is also testing more samples to gather further information on the variants.

Dr. Bahl emphasized that the government has developed platforms to create new vaccines. If a new variant emerges in the future, the government is prepared with two options: evaluating the effectiveness of existing vaccines or developing a new vaccine specifically targeting the new variant.

Delhi Health Minister Asks Public Not to Panic

Delhi’s Health Minister, Pankaj Singh, also addressed the situation by urging the public not to panic despite a mild surge in cases. He mentioned that official data shows 104 active cases in Delhi but reassured citizens that hospitals are prepared for any emergency.

India reported a total of 1,009 active Covid-19 cases as of Monday, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This includes 752 newly confirmed cases. In the latest report, Kerala leads with 430 active cases.

Preparedness in Hospitals for Covid

Hospitals across India have been instructed to be prepared with beds, oxygen, and essential medicines, although the current situation does not warrant alarm. The health minister reassured citizens that Covid-19 cases caused by the new variants are similar to a normal viral illness, with symptoms such as fever, cough, and cold.

The government continues to monitor the situation closely and is taking necessary precautions to ensure public health safety.

</excerpt>

India has witnessed a mild uptick in COVID-19 infections, with active cases climbing from 327 on May 19 to 1,009, as per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The latest surge is primarily driven by two subvariants — NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 — both descended from the JN.1 lineage.

States With Most Active Cases

Kerala and Maharashtra currently report the highest active caseloads with 420 and 104 cases respectively, followed by Delhi and Gujarat with 83 active cases. These figures underline a sharp regional surge in infections, though hospitalisation rates remain stable.

New Variants Identified by INSACOG

According to data from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), the rise in cases stems from two newly identified variants — NB.1.8.1 and LF.7. The NB.1.8.1 variant was first found in Tamil Nadu, while LF.7 was detected in Gujarat.

These subvariants are under watch by the World Health Organization (WHO), classified as “variants under monitoring”, not yet categorized as variants of concern or interest. The Health Ministry confirms that “JN.1 remains the most prevalent variant in India,” with subvariants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 currently dominating the case rise.

Other sublineages like BA.2 and various Omicron strains continue to circulate but are less dominant.

What We Know About NB.1.8.1 and LF.7

Health experts say these new strains spread more easily than earlier Omicron variants. Reports suggest that they can better escape immune defences, especially in unvaccinated individuals or those overdue for booster shots.

However, medical professionals caution against panic, noting that “both NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 do not appear to lead to more severe outcomes compared to earlier Omicron variants.” Symptoms mostly remain mild or moderate for those vaccinated or previously infected.

NB.1.8.1 COVID Variant

This strain has shown a faster transmission rate. Although its mutations aid in rapid spread, there is no conclusive evidence suggesting it leads to severe illness.

LF.7 COVID Variant

LF.7 shares traits common to Omicron-related variants, including high transmissibility. It can partially evade immunity, particularly in people who haven’t received recent booster doses.

No Spike in Hospitalisations or Deaths Yet

Despite the rise in active cases, hospitals are not witnessing a parallel surge in admissions or fatalities. Surveillance continues, and public health agencies are monitoring developments closely.

Older adults and individuals with pre-existing conditions are advised to remain cautious, as the virus can still cause complications in vulnerable groups.

Common Symptoms of New COVID Subvariants

Though the symptoms are generally non-severe, health authorities have flagged a consistent pattern. These are the most reported symptoms in recent cases:

Fever with chills

Cough

Sore throat

Unexplained fatigue

Severe body aches

Headache

Runny or stuffy nose

Subtle loss of taste

While these symptoms resemble seasonal flu or allergies, testing is encouraged if multiple signs persist, especially among high-risk individuals.

India’s latest COVID surge, though currently moderate, highlights the virus’s ongoing evolution. While new JN.1 subvariants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 are not yet a cause for alarm, continued genomic surveillance and public awareness are key to preventing further escalation. Health experts recommend staying up to date on vaccinations and practicing hygiene precautions, particularly in high-density areas or during travel.

</excerpt>

The Delhi government issued a fresh advisory on Friday after the city recorded 23 new Covid-19 cases, urging hospitals to ensure readiness in terms of beds, oxygen supply, medicines, and vaccines.

Health Minister Pankaj Singh confirmed the new infections and said, “The government is verifying whether the cases involve residents or travelers.”

The move comes as Covid-19 cases rise in several countries including China, Thailand, and Singapore, sparking global concern. In response, Delhi’s health department has instructed all health institutions to send positive samples for genome sequencing to Lok Nayak Hospital.“The hospitals must ensure preparedness in terms of availability of beds, oxygen, antibiotics, other drugs and vaccines. All equipment such as ventilators, Bi-PAP, oxygen concentrators and PSA must be in functional condition,” — Delhi Health Advisory

Genome Sequencing, Data Reporting Mandated

The advisory also mandated daily reporting of parameters such as case count, equipment status, and drug availability via the Delhi State Health Data Management Portal.

Mild Cases Across India, Says Centre

The Union Health Ministry noted that Covid infections remain mild across India. A total of 257 cases were recorded on Wednesday. State-wise reports include Maharashtra (56) and Tamil Nadu (66), with smaller numbers in Delhi, Puducherry, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Haryana, Karnataka, and West Bengal.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George disclosed that the state logged 273 cases in May, with Kottayam topping the list at 82, followed by Thiruvananthapuram (73), Ernakulam (49), Pathanamthitta (30), and Thrissur (26).

Haryana Urges Calm

Haryana reported four new cases on Friday, which officials said were mild. The individuals remain under home observation. Health Minister Arti Singh Rao said there was “no need for panic” and that the government is “closely monitoring the situation.”

Centre Says Situation ‘Under Control’

During a May 19 review meeting chaired by the Director General of Health Services, experts from NCDC, ICMR, and other agencies concluded that the situation is currently stable.

“As of May 19, 2025, the number of active Covid-19 cases in India stands at 257, a very low figure considering the country’s large population. Almost all of these cases are mild, with no hospitalisation required,”— Official quoted by PTI

With global trends pointing toward a resurgence, Indian authorities appear cautious but confident that proactive measures will keep the situation under control.

Alarming Rise in Asia Raises Eyebrows

<excerpt>Covid-19 cases are rising in Asia, sparking concerns of a comeback. Here’s what officials in India, Hong Kong, and Singapore say.
</excerpt>

Asia has witnessed a rapid rise in Covid-19 cases over the past few weeks, with Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand being the worst hit. Following the pandemic years when the globe nearly came to a halt, the question everyone wants answered is whether Covid is here once more.

India’s Covid Situation Remains Under Control

India itself has been relatively insulated from this recent wave of cases, with the government insisting that the situation is in check.

India Covid cases: According to the ministry of health and family welfare’s data, India recorded 164 cases from May 12 and the number of active Covid cases in India was 257 on Tuesday. The state with the maximum cases was Kerala at 69, followed by 44 in Maharashtra and 34 in Tamil Nadu.

Review Meeting Conducted in India

Officials of the National Centre for Disease Control, Emergency Medical Relief department, Disaster Management Cell, Indian Council of Medical Research, and central government hospitals conducted a review meeting on Monday, presided over by the director general of health services.

“The meeting concluded that the current Covid-19 situation in India remains under control. As of May 19, 2025, the number of active Covid-19 cases in India stands at 257, a very low figure considering the country’s large population. Almost all of these cases are mild, with no hospitalisation required,” an official told PTI.

Mumbai’s KEM Hospital saw two Covid-19 positive fatalities, both of whom had serious pre-existing health issues, sources told a PTI news agency report. “One patient had oral cancer, while the other had nephrotic syndrome. Both the fatalities were due to their pre-existing illness and not Covid-19.” ANI quoted sources. HT was unable to confirm the report independently.

Hong Kong and Singapore See Significant Spikes

Hong Kong and Singapore Covid-19 cases: There is an increase in cases in Southeast Asian countries, but the Covid still appears to be contained. Both Hong Kong and Singapore authorities have been calling for caution while also stating that these waves were inevitable. The Singapore health ministry and the agency for communicable diseases stated that the week’s estimated number of Covid-19 cases was 14,200 between April 27 and May 3, an increase from the last week’s count of 11,100, the Straits Times stated.

“After the resumption of normalcy, Hong Kong experienced cycles of active periods of Covid-19 every six to nine months. We expect the activity level of Covid-19 to remain at a higher level for at least the next few weeks,” the controller of Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection, Edwin Tsui, said in a press release.

Last week, Singapore’s health minister Ong Ye Kung had written on Facebook that occasional Covid-19 waves are “expected throughout the year”.

South Korea Extends Vaccination Campaign

South Korea: In the meantime, South Korea’s Disease Control and Prevention Agency prolonged its seasonal Covid vaccination period in February for two months to end of June. It recommended individuals aged 65 and older get vaccinated with the JN.1 dose from Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE.

But are the official numbers truly accurate? Experts raise concerns.
</excerpt>

As Covid infections rise in some of Asia’s regions, Indian officials reported on Monday that the situation is still ‘under control’ within the country, even with a minor increase in the cases in certain states.

Review Meeting Held by Health Experts

As per a report by news agency ANI, the surge in Covid-19 cases in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand over the past few weeks led to a review meet of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Emergency Medical Relief (EMR) wing, Disaster Management Cell, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Central government hospitals experts.

“As per the preliminary information available, the cases are mostly mild, not associated with unusual severity or mortality,” sources quoted in the report said.

India’s Covid-19 Cases Remain Low

The officials further stated that the review meeting concluded that the situation in India is still ‘under control’ and the number of cases observed until Monday was ‘very low’ given the large population of the nation.

“In light of these developments, a review meeting of experts from NCDC, EMR division, Disaster Management Cell, ICMR, and Central government hospitals was convened under the chairpersonship of Director General of Health Services (DGHS). The meeting concluded that the current Covid-19 situation in India remains under control. As of May 19, 2025, the number of active Covid-19 cases in India stands at 257, a very low figure considering the country’s large population,” the officials said.

They also indicated that nearly all cases in India are mild and no hospitalization is needed.

“A robust system for surveillance of respiratory viral illnesses, including Covid-19, also exists in the country through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and ICMR,” they said.

The Second Wave of Covid-19 in Southeast Asia

The second wave of Covid-19 arrived in Southeast Asia, from Hong Kong and Singapore to Thailand. The majority of cases detected in the surge are spreading as a result of the Omicron variant JN.1 and its descendants. There were 14,000+ cases in Singapore in early May, with the same surges in Hong Kong and Thailand.

The JN.1 variant of Covid-19 was initially discovered in August 2023, and the World Health Organisation labelled it as a ‘variant of interest’ in December 2023. It is a lineage of the Omicron BA.2.86 variant. The JN.1 variant comprises around 30 mutations as per WHO, and some of them include LF.7 and NB.1.8, most prevalent among the cases being identified over recent weeks.

After Covid: Is the World Ready for Another Pandemic?

<excerpt>The Covid-19 pandemic exposed global health vulnerabilities, raising concerns about preparedness for future outbreaks. This article examines current measures and what more is needed to face the next pandemic effectively.
</excerpt>

The Covid-19 pandemic, which began in late 2019, was a wake-up call for the world. It claimed around seven million lives globally, disrupted economies, and overwhelmed healthcare systems. Countries struggled to contain the virus, and no nation was truly prepared for its devastating effects. Five years later, as we navigate new outbreaks of diseases like measles, bird flu, and Covid itself, a critical question arises: Is the world better prepared for the next pandemic?

The Covid pandemic exposed significant gaps in global health preparedness. Countries with robust healthcare systems were stretched to their limits, while those with limited resources faced even graver challenges. Covid taught us that early detection, transparent communication, and swift public health interventions are crucial in managing pandemics.

Vaccine development was one of the few success stories during Covid. The rapid development and distribution of vaccines, thanks to scientific advancements and global collaboration, saved millions of lives. However, disparities in vaccine access between high-income and low-income countries highlighted ongoing issues in global health equity.

Countries realized the importance of having strong healthcare infrastructure, stockpiles of essential supplies, and well-coordinated public health strategies. Investments in testing capacity, contact tracing, and digital health technologies also played a significant role in controlling outbreaks.

Current Global Health Landscape

As of 2025, the world faces multiple health threats. In Europe, ten deaths from measles were reported in 2024, while the United States has seen major outbreaks of the disease. Bird flu has affected dairy herds in 17 U.S. states, and though transmission to humans remains limited, cases in cats indicate the virus’s potential to cross species barriers. Meanwhile, Covid continues to claim between 500 and 1,000 lives globally each week, exacerbated by co-circulation with flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Despite these challenges, many experts express concern about the world’s readiness for future pandemics. The failure to control diseases like measles and polio—once nearly eradicated—demonstrates persistent gaps in vaccination coverage and public health efforts. Polio cases in Gaza and New York and hospitalizations due to measles in wealthy countries illustrate the ongoing struggle against preventable diseases.

During the Covid crisis, public health measures like mask mandates, lockdowns, and travel restrictions were controversial but effective in reducing transmission. Governments that acted swiftly and decisively, such as New Zealand and South Korea, managed to control outbreaks effectively. However, public resistance to restrictions, fueled by misinformation and political polarization, hampered response efforts in many countries.

The handling of the mpox outbreak in 2022 exemplified the consequences of delayed and underfunded responses. Misconceptions about the disease’s demographics led to complacency and delayed action, allowing the virus to spread unchecked. This experience underscores the need for timely, evidence-based responses and clear communication from authorities.

Vaccine Hesitancy and Misinformation

One of the most significant hurdles in pandemic preparedness is vaccine hesitancy. Historical skepticism, fueled by anti-vaccination movements, conspiracy theories, and misinformation, persists despite overwhelming evidence of vaccines’ safety and efficacy. During Covid, conspiracy theories about vaccine safety and the virus’s origin hindered vaccination efforts, especially in marginalized communities.

Vaccine hesitancy is not new. Historical practices like variolation—an early form of vaccination introduced in the West by Cotton Mather and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu—sparked debates about safety and ethics. Today, similar debates continue, exacerbated by social media and misinformation campaigns. Overcoming this challenge requires transparent communication, education, and community engagement.

Strengthening Global Health Infrastructure

A robust global health system is essential for pandemic preparedness. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) play pivotal roles in coordinating responses, surveillance, and resource distribution. However, funding threats and geopolitical tensions jeopardize their effectiveness. The United States’ restructuring of its health agencies and Argentina’s plans to exit WHO highlight these challenges.

To improve preparedness, countries must:

Increase funding for global health organizations: Ensuring stable and adequate funding for WHO, CDC, and similar bodies is critical. These organizations need resources for surveillance, vaccine development, and emergency response capabilities.

Strengthen healthcare systems: Investments in healthcare infrastructure, especially in low- and middle-income countries, are essential. This includes building healthcare facilities, training healthcare workers, and ensuring supply chains for medicines and equipment.

Enhance disease surveillance: Surveillance systems must detect outbreaks early and monitor disease spread efficiently. Digital health technologies and data-sharing platforms can improve real-time monitoring and response.

Improve vaccine equity: Equitable vaccine access ensures that low-income countries are not left behind during health crises. Mechanisms like COVAX must be strengthened to avoid repeat disparities witnessed during Covid.

Promote public health literacy: Educating the public about the importance of vaccines, hygiene practices, and compliance with health measures is vital. Governments must counter misinformation through credible sources and targeted campaigns.

Preparing for Unknown Threats

Experts caution that the next pandemic might not be influenza or a known virus like Covid or mpox. Emerging pathogens, including novel viruses from animal reservoirs, pose unpredictable threats. While planning for bird flu pandemics continues, the world must maintain flexibility to address unknown pathogens.

Investments in research are crucial for developing adaptable vaccine platforms and antiviral drugs. The UK’s Recover and React studies during Covid provided models for rapid clinical trials and disease monitoring, respectively. Building on these initiatives can enhance preparedness for future outbreaks.

Leadership and Political Will

Leadership plays a pivotal role in pandemic preparedness and response. Politicians must provide clear, consistent messaging and prioritize public health over political interests. During Covid, countries with decisive leadership witnessed better outcomes. Political will is necessary to fund health initiatives, enforce public health measures, and foster international collaboration.

Global cooperation is equally important. Viruses transcend borders, and an outbreak in one country can quickly become a global crisis. Strengthening international health regulations and fostering collaboration through organizations like WHO are essential for coordinated responses.

Looking Ahead: Hope for the Future

Despite current challenges, there are grounds for optimism. Scientific advancements, such as mRNA vaccine technology, offer faster vaccine development for emerging diseases. Countries have expanded healthcare capacities and invested in public health infrastructure.

Public awareness about infectious diseases has increased, and there is greater acceptance of vaccines and health measures than before. The Covid experience demonstrated that rapid action, scientific innovation, and public compliance could save lives and reduce economic losses.

Maintaining the momentum is crucial. Governments must commit to continuous investments in health systems, research, and international health cooperation. Transparency, evidence-based policies, and strong leadership are essential to prepare for and mitigate the impact of future pandemics.

The Covid pandemic revealed vulnerabilities in global health systems, but it also provided valuable lessons. While progress has been made in vaccine technology, healthcare infrastructure, and public health strategies, significant gaps remain. Vaccine hesitancy, misinformation, and underfunded health organizations threaten future pandemic preparedness.

The world is better equipped than it was before Covid, but complacency could lead to repeated failures. By strengthening global health systems, fostering international cooperation, investing in research, and ensuring equitable access to vaccines and healthcare, the world can enhance its readiness for the next pandemic.

As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The global community must act collectively, learn from past mistakes, and ensure that when the next pandemic arrives, the world is ready.

China’s ‘Bat Woman’ Discovers New Coronavirus With ‘High Spillover Risk’

<excerpt>A new study led by China’s ‘Bat Woman,’ Shi Zhengli, has identified a coronavirus that infects humans like SARS-CoV-2, raising fresh concerns over potential spillover risks and future outbreaks.
</excerpt>

Shi Zhengli, the Chinese virologist widely known for her research on bat coronaviruses, has led a study identifying a new virus that could pose a risk to humans. The research, conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) along with Guangzhou Laboratory and Guangzhou Academy of Sciences, highlights the discovery of HKU5-CoV-2, a coronavirus that infects human cells in a manner similar to SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic.

Virus Uses Same Infection Pathway as Covid-19

According to the study published in the journal Cell, the newly identified virus utilizes the ACE2 receptor to enter and infect cells, the same mechanism used by SARS-CoV-2. Researchers warn that HKU5-CoV-2 carries a “high risk of spillover to humans,” either through direct contact or via an intermediate host, increasing concerns about its potential to trigger a future outbreak.

Potential Zoonotic Threat Identified

The study indicates that HKU5-CoV-2 has a better adaptation to human ACE2 receptors than its predecessor, HKU5-CoV, making it more efficient in infecting human cells. Researchers conducted structural and functional analyses, finding that the virus successfully infected human respiratory and enteric organoids, emphasising its potential risk to human health.

Wuhan Lab’s Controversial History Resurfaces

The Wuhan Institute of Virology, which has been at the center of global scrutiny over the origins of Covid-19, has previously conducted research on coronaviruses, including ‘gain of function’ (GoF) studies. Some experts suspect that an accident at the WIV may have contributed to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite ongoing debates over whether SARS-CoV-2 originated naturally or from a laboratory, no conclusive evidence has emerged to support the natural origin theory.

Shi Zhengli’s Reputation and Ongoing Research

Dubbed the ‘Bat Woman’ for her extensive work on bat-borne coronaviruses, Shi Zhengli continues to explore the potential risks of zoonotic transmission. Her latest findings reinforce the argument that novel coronaviruses remain a significant public health concern, warranting further research and preventive measures to mitigate future pandemics.

Global Implications and Future Monitoring

With this new discovery, health experts emphasise the importance of ongoing surveillance of coronaviruses in wildlife to prevent future outbreaks. The study underscores the need for stricter biosecurity measures and enhanced global cooperation in monitoring potential pandemic threats.

</excerpt>

As the winter season continues to cast its cold spell across the United States, the nation is grappling with an alarming surge in cases of three major respiratory illnesses: COVID-19, the flu (influenza), and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). These three viruses are overwhelming healthcare systems, creating what many are referring to as a “tridemic.” Health experts and medical professionals are urging the public to stay vigilant, get vaccinated, and understand the key symptoms of each virus to protect themselves and others. This article delves into the current state of the COVID-19, flu, and RSV outbreaks, the symptoms associated with each virus, and the steps individuals can take to safeguard their health.

The Rising Threat of COVID-19, Flu, and RSV

Over the past few months, the U.S. has witnessed a resurgence of respiratory illnesses, with cases of COVID-19, flu, and RSV climbing steadily. The emergence of new COVID-19 variants has contributed to the virus’s continued spread, while the seasonal flu and RSV infections are peaking as expected during the colder months.

The simultaneous rise in cases of these three viruses has placed a tremendous strain on the healthcare system, with hospitals reporting higher-than-usual admissions. Emergency rooms are overcrowded, and medical professionals are working tirelessly to manage the overwhelming caseload. This triad of respiratory viruses has become a significant public health concern, raising questions about how to prevent the spread of these diseases and mitigate their impact.

COVID-19: The Ongoing Challenge

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has continued to evolve since it was first identified in December 2019. Although vaccination campaigns and preventive measures have led to a decline in severe cases compared to the earlier phases of the pandemic, the virus remains a significant threat. New variants of concern, such as Omicron subvariants, are circulating, and cases are once again rising across the country.

Key Symptoms of COVID-19

The symptoms of COVID-19 can vary widely, with some individuals remaining asymptomatic or experiencing only mild symptoms, while others develop severe respiratory issues. Key symptoms to watch for include:

Fever or chills: A common initial sign of infection.

Cough: A dry or productive cough can be an early symptom.

Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing: This can indicate a more severe infection, particularly in older adults or individuals with underlying health conditions.

Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired or weak is one of the most common complaints among people infected with COVID-19.

Muscle or body aches: Many people report muscle pain and body aches, similar to the flu.

Loss of taste or smell: Although less common with newer variants, this symptom was prominent early in the pandemic.

Sore throat: A sore throat is often one of the first symptoms of COVID-19.

Congestion or runny nose: Nasal congestion is also a common symptom, particularly in cases involving newer variants.

If you suspect you have COVID-19 or have been in contact with someone who has tested positive, it is essential to get tested promptly and follow local public health guidelines for quarantine and isolation.

Flu (Influenza): A Seasonal Threat

Influenza, commonly referred to as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Flu cases tend to peak in the fall and winter months, coinciding with colder weather and people spending more time indoors. This year, the flu season is shaping up to be particularly severe, with widespread transmission reported across the country.

Key Symptoms of the Flu

Flu symptoms often come on suddenly and can range from mild to severe. The hallmark symptoms of influenza include:

Fever: A high fever is one of the most common symptoms of the flu.

Chills: Along with fever, chills are frequently reported.

Cough: A dry, persistent cough is often associated with the flu.

Fatigue: People infected with the flu often experience extreme tiredness, making it difficult to carry out daily activities.

Body aches: Muscle aches and joint pain are common with the flu, contributing to a general feeling of discomfort.

Sore throat: A scratchy or painful throat is a frequent symptom of the flu.

Runny or stuffy nose: Nasal congestion is typical with the flu and may be accompanied by sneezing.

While most people recover from the flu with rest and hydration, complications can arise, particularly in young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems. In some cases, the flu can lead to pneumonia, bronchitis, or hospitalization.

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus): A Growing Concern for Children and Older Adults

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that causes respiratory infections. It is particularly concerning for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. RSV infections are typically seasonal, peaking in the fall and winter months. This year, RSV cases have surged to alarming levels, causing a strain on pediatric hospitals and emergency rooms.

Key Symptoms of RSV

RSV symptoms can range from mild to severe, and the virus primarily affects the respiratory tract. Symptoms may begin similarly to a cold, but in more severe cases, RSV can lead to bronchiolitis or pneumonia. Key symptoms to watch for include:

Runny or stuffy nose: RSV typically starts with nasal congestion and a runny nose.

Cough: A persistent cough is often one of the first signs of RSV infection.

Wheezing: Difficulty breathing and wheezing are common symptoms, particularly in children.

Shortness of breath: Severe RSV infections can lead to labored breathing, requiring medical attention.

Fever: A mild to moderate fever often accompanies RSV infection.

Fatigue: Similar to other respiratory infections, fatigue and a general feeling of malaise are common.

In young children, RSV can cause wheezing and difficulty breathing, leading to hospitalization in some cases. Infants, especially those under six months of age, are at the highest risk of severe illness from RSV. Additionally, older adults, particularly those with underlying lung or heart conditions, are also at higher risk for complications.

How to Protect Yourself and Others

As the tridemic of COVID-19, the flu, and RSV continues to spread, taking preventive measures is crucial to protecting yourself and others. Here are some key strategies for reducing the risk of infection:

Get Vaccinated: The most effective way to prevent severe illness from COVID-19 and the flu is to get vaccinated. Annual flu vaccines and COVID-19 boosters are essential to reducing the risk of infection and preventing serious health complications. For individuals at high risk for RSV, the CDC recommends specific preventive treatments, including the administration of palivizumab (a monoclonal antibody) for certain high-risk infants and children.

Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer when soap is not available. Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth, to prevent the spread of germs.

Wear a Mask: In areas with high transmission rates, wearing a mask can reduce the spread of respiratory droplets that carry viruses like COVID-19, the flu, and RSV. Masks are particularly important in crowded indoor spaces and on public transportation.

Stay Home When Sick: If you experience symptoms of COVID-19, the flu, or RSV, stay home to prevent spreading the illness to others. Rest and hydrate to help your body recover, and avoid returning to work or school until you are symptom-free and no longer contagious.

Maintain Social Distance: Avoid close contact with individuals who are sick, especially those showing symptoms of respiratory illness. In crowded or public spaces, try to maintain physical distance when possible.

Seek Medical Help If Needed: If you experience severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or a high fever that does not subside, seek medical attention immediately. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure you receive the appropriate care.

Staying Vigilant Amid Rising Cases

As COVID-19, the flu, and RSV continue to surge across the U.S., it is more important than ever for individuals to be aware of the symptoms of these respiratory illnesses and take proactive steps to protect themselves and others. While vaccines, good hygiene, and social distancing can help reduce the spread of these viruses, staying informed and responsive to changing health guidelines is key to managing the ongoing public health challenge. By taking personal responsibility for our health and adhering to public health recommendations, we can help ease the burden on healthcare systems and reduce the impact of these respiratory viruses.

</excerpt>

Vietnam Officials Go on Trial Over COVID-19 Flight Bribes: A Deep Dive Into the Scandal

In a shocking turn of events, several high-ranking officials in Vietnam are currently facing trial over accusations of accepting bribes to facilitate chartered flights during the COVID-19 pandemic. The trial has captivated the nation as it reveals the depths of corruption and mismanagement during one of the most critical times in Vietnam’s modern history. This extensive look into the scandal covers the details of the bribery case, its impact on Vietnam’s public trust, and the broader implications for governance, health policies, and corruption in the nation.

Background: The COVID-19 Pandemic and Its Challenges in Vietnam

The global COVID-19 pandemic, which began in late 2019, forced governments worldwide to implement unprecedented measures to control the spread of the virus. Vietnam, which had gained international praise for its early and effective response to the virus, was no exception. The government imposed strict lockdowns, closed borders, and adopted rigorous quarantine measures to prevent a surge in cases. However, like many countries, Vietnam faced considerable challenges in repatriating its citizens who were stranded abroad due to the global travel bans.

For many Vietnamese nationals, especially students, migrant workers, and businesspeople, returning home during the pandemic became a matter of urgency. As a result, the government authorized a limited number of chartered flights to bring citizens back to Vietnam. These flights were initially intended to be humanitarian efforts, prioritizing the repatriation of those in need. However, as the pandemic dragged on, a series of corruption scandals began to unfold, centered around the management of these flights.

The Bribery Scandal: Allegations Against Officials

The bribery case involves senior officials from Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Transport. According to investigators, these individuals accepted bribes from airlines and travel agencies to facilitate the approval and operation of chartered flights. The bribes were allegedly paid to expedite the flight approvals and to ensure that certain passengers were given priority, bypassing the usual protocols.

The scandal first came to light when authorities began investigating irregularities in the flight booking process. It was discovered that individuals with ties to airlines or government officials were able to secure seats on repatriation flights, despite not being on the official lists. These individuals often paid large sums of money to secure their place on these flights, with some even receiving preferential treatment, including upgraded seating and faster processing at the airport.

The trial has focused on key individuals, including former high-ranking officials who are accused of using their influence to accept bribes in exchange for facilitating these flights. These officials allegedly allowed travel agencies and airlines to charge exorbitant fees for tickets on repatriation flights, which were supposed to be affordable and accessible to citizens stranded abroad.

Key Figures Involved in the Trial

Several individuals are at the center of the trial, with the most prominent being Pham Quang Hieu, a former official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Hieu, along with his associates, is accused of orchestrating a network of bribery involving airline executives and other government officials. The bribery network is said to have operated for several months, with the money flowing through intermediaries who acted as go-betweens for the airlines and the officials.

In addition to Pham Quang Hieu, there are several other figures implicated in the scandal, including the former Deputy Minister of Transport and executives from the Vietnam Airlines Group. These individuals are accused of being complicit in the bribery scheme, either by accepting or facilitating the illegal payments. Investigators have also uncovered evidence of forged documents, as officials allegedly created fake passenger lists to justify the high number of seats on the flights, enabling them to pocket the bribes.

The Scope of the Bribery Scheme

The bribery scheme appears to have been far-reaching, involving not only government officials but also private sector players. Airlines and travel agencies are believed to have been involved in the illicit process of prioritizing passengers in exchange for large sums of money. Investigators have uncovered evidence suggesting that certain individuals paid as much as $10,000 for a seat on a chartered flight, a far cry from the standard ticket prices.

This corruption has had a significant financial impact on the public, as the exorbitant prices paid by these individuals were passed on to those who genuinely needed to return to Vietnam. The use of official channels for personal gain has sparked outrage among the public, particularly among citizens who were unable to afford the inflated ticket prices.

The scheme also involved falsifying official documents to create the appearance of transparency. Documents allegedly signed by government officials showed that the flights were being approved in a manner that was not only illegal but also bypassed standard quarantine protocols. These documents were used to justify the large sums of money being paid to secure tickets, while the true purpose was to line the pockets of those involved in the corruption.

Impact on Vietnam’s Reputation

The bribery scandal has had a severe impact on Vietnam’s reputation, both domestically and internationally. The country, which had been lauded for its effective pandemic response, now finds itself in the midst of a corruption crisis that has damaged public trust in the government. Citizens, who had once placed their faith in the government’s ability to handle the pandemic, are now questioning the integrity of public officials and the transparency of government processes.

The scandal has led to widespread protests and calls for accountability. Public figures, including political analysts and human rights activists, have voiced concerns over the lack of oversight in the management of the COVID-19 response. The fact that such large-scale corruption could occur during a global health crisis has sparked outrage among the general public.

Furthermore, the scandal has raised questions about the broader issue of corruption within the Vietnamese government. The country has long struggled with issues of corruption at various levels of government, and the bribery case is a stark reminder of the challenges that remain in addressing this systemic issue.

Legal and Political Repercussions

The trial of the accused officials is expected to have significant legal and political repercussions. The Vietnamese legal system, which has often been criticized for its lack of transparency, is under intense scrutiny as this case unfolds. The trial is seen as a critical test for the government’s ability to tackle corruption at the highest levels and restore public confidence in its institutions.

The political fallout from the scandal is already being felt, with several officials being forced to step down from their posts, and others facing legal action. The government has promised to hold all those involved accountable, but the public is closely watching to see whether the trial will result in real change or if it will be another case of corruption being swept under the rug.

In response to the scandal, the government has also promised to implement reforms aimed at increasing transparency in the allocation of repatriation flights and other COVID-19-related services. These reforms include stricter oversight of government officials, better tracking of financial transactions, and measures to ensure that citizens are not charged unfairly for essential services.

The Role of the Media and Public Outcry

The media has played a crucial role in bringing the bribery scandal to light. Investigative journalists have uncovered key pieces of evidence that led to the arrest and trial of the accused officials. The coverage of the case has sparked widespread public outrage, with many people taking to social media to demand justice.

Public outcry has been particularly intense due to the perception that the officials involved in the scandal were exploiting a national crisis for personal gain. Many citizens who were unable to afford the inflated ticket prices feel that the corruption has further exacerbated their hardship during the pandemic.

The media has also been instrumental in raising awareness about the broader issue of corruption in Vietnam. This case has highlighted the need for greater accountability and transparency in government dealings, particularly in times of crisis. The media’s role in exposing this scandal is seen as a crucial step toward pushing for broader political reforms in the country.

Lessons Learned and the Path Forward

The trial of the Vietnamese officials involved in the COVID-19 flight bribery scandal is a stark reminder of the dangers of corruption, especially in times of crisis. While the government has promised accountability and reforms, the case underscores the need for greater oversight and transparency in public administration.

For Vietnam, this scandal represents both a crisis and an opportunity. The crisis lies in the damage to public trust, the financial exploitation of citizens, and the tarnishing of the country’s international reputation. The opportunity lies in the chance to tackle systemic corruption head-on and to demonstrate that the government is willing to hold its officials accountable, no matter how high they rank.

As the trial continues, the world watches to see how Vietnam responds to this critical moment in its history. Will this case be the catalyst for broader reforms, or will it be yet another chapter in a long history of unaddressed corruption? Only time will tell, but for the citizens of Vietnam, justice and accountability must remain the ultimate goal.

This has been done following an external review order by the former First Minister, Humza Yousaf, which led to WhatsApp and other non-corporate messaging apps being removed from devices used for official purposes by next spring.

In addition, Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said, “government business should take place on government systems that are secure, searchable, and permit the proper sharing of information, within our statutory duties.” The move has followed the UK’s COVID inquiry discovery of how ministers and leading civil servants had deleted the messages from WhatsApp during pandemic times, which attracted heavy public outcry.

Reason For The Ban

The review’s findings involved cases where senior figures such as former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon admitted to having deleted messages, which attracted criticism. Moreover, some ministers such as Yousaf faced a public outcry over their messages. One of the exchanges saw him refer to the former Labour lawmaker Neil Findlay with derogatory terms.

The review, led by former Channel Islands data protection commissioner Emma Martins, proposed 20 recommendations on governance, values, training, recruitment, and mobile messaging app management. Martins pointed out, “Technologies are changing our lives at home and in the workplace. No organisation can afford to sit back and hope that navigating those changes will come without effort.” She also acknowledged improvements already in progress.

</excerpt>

With the change in weather conditions in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, the number of patients suffering from seasonal diseases and people have started testing positive for COVID-19.
So, far three patients have positive for tested COVID-19 and 18 patients have tested positive for dengue, and one each for swine flu and chikungunya in the city, a health official said on Wednesday.
Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO, Indore) Dr Bhure Singh Setia told ANI, “In the last two days, three female patients have tested positive for COVID-19. These women got themselves tested at private hospitals in the city. Of these, two women were admitted to the hospital for their other disease, later found to be COVID-19 positive and are undergoing treatment. While one woman is in isolation at home.”
Apart from this, 18 people have tested positive for Dengue, while one patient each suffering from Swine flu and Chikungunya was found in the city in the last two days, Setia said.
“It is rainy season; there is waterlogging at various places in which larvae thrive so we should release those accumulated water. We have also called drones, through which larvae are being detected in the water accumulated on the roofs of big buildings. The team of the malaria department is searching and spraying medicine to eliminate the larvae,” he added.
Earlier, a health official in Jabalpur district said that a total of 11 cases of swine flu were detected in Jabalpur between July 11 and August 6. Of these, nine patients were recovered and discharged from the hospital.
“In the initial phase of rain, the outbreak of colds, coughs, and fever increases every year. The swine flu is caused by H1N1 virus and just like COVID-19, it is also a throat infection. A total of 11 patients have tested positive for swine flu in Jabalpur so far since July 11 who were undergoing treatment at private and medical college hospitals in the district. Nine patients have been discharged,” said Sanjay Mishra, Joint Director, Health Services Jabalpur.
There is no need to panic about the disease but it is necessary to be cautious as it transfers from one person to another through air. Therefore, those who are tested positive should stay isolated in the hospital and avoid staying at home, he said.
He further urged people that those who were suffering from colds, cough,s and fevers should avoid visiting crowded places. Do consult the doctor and take medicines on time.

Researchers from the Universities of Arizona, Oxford, and Leeds reviewed numerous studies on long COVID to understand its prevalence, the disease mechanisms, the variety of symptoms, and potential treatments. Long COVID, also known as post-COVID-19 condition, is characterized by symptoms lasting three months or more after the initial COVID-19 infection, affecting multiple organ systems and causing issues like fatigue, cognitive impairment (often called ‘brain fog’), breathing difficulties, and pain.

Long COVID can affect individuals of all ages, including children. It is more common in females and those with lower socioeconomic status, though the reasons for these disparities are still being studied. The researchers noted that while some patients gradually recover, others experience long COVID for years. Many who developed long COVID before vaccines became available remain ill.

“Long COVID is a devastating disease with a profound human toll and socioeconomic impact,” said Janko Nikolich, MD, PhD, senior author of the study and director of the Aegis Consortium at U of A Health Sciences. He emphasized the importance of understanding the mechanisms to find therapy targets, potentially benefiting other chronic conditions like myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

Being fully vaccinated and up to date with boosters reduces the risk of long COVID, but 3%-5% of people worldwide still develop the condition after an acute COVID-19 infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that long COVID affects 4%-10% of the U.S. adult population, with 1 in 10 adults who had COVID developing long COVID.

The review found various biological mechanisms involved in long COVID, including the persistence of the virus, disruption of the immune response, and microscopic blood clotting, even in those with mild initial infections. Currently, there are no proven treatments for long COVID; management focuses on symptom relief and rehabilitation. Researchers stress the need for biomarkers to diagnose and monitor long COVID and therapies addressing its root causes.

People can lower their risk of developing long COVID by avoiding infection, using antivirals promptly if infected, avoiding strenuous exercise during infection, and staying current with COVID vaccines and boosters.

“Long COVID is a dismal condition, but there are grounds for cautious optimism,” said Trisha Greenhalgh, lead author of the study and professor at Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. She highlighted the ongoing research trials for mechanism-based treatments, which, if effective, could target specific subgroups with precision therapies. Greenhalgh also emphasized the significant social and economic burden of long COVID, particularly on ‘long-haulers’ who have been unwell for two years or more, and the need for better treatment and support strategies for these individuals.

In the latest update from India’s health ministry, the country has reported a single-day rise of 760 new COVID-19 cases, accompanied by two additional fatalities within the past 24 hours. The data, released at 8 am, reveals one death each in Kerala and Karnataka. The total number of active cases has been tallied at 4,423.

The decline in daily cases observed until December 5 has been reversed, with numbers surging again, attributed to the emergence of a new variant and the onset of cold weather conditions. While the pandemic’s peak witnessed daily case numbers in the lakhs, the recent uptick is a cause for concern.

Since the pandemic’s onset in early 2020, India has reported over 4.5 crore COVID-19 infections, with more than 5.3 lakh deaths. The health ministry’s website indicates that over 4.4 crore individuals have successfully recovered from the virus, reflecting a national recovery rate of 98.81 percent.

Notably, the country has administered a significant number of COVID-19 vaccine doses, reaching a total of 220.67 crore. This ongoing vaccination effort plays a crucial role in the nation’s fight against the virus, aiming to reduce severe cases, hospitalizations, and fatalities.

As the nation grapples with the evolving situation, authorities are closely monitoring the impact of the new variant and implementing measures to curb the spread. The rise in daily cases serves as a reminder for citizens to adhere to safety protocols, including vaccination, wearing masks, and practicing social distancing.

The health ministry continues to stress the importance of public cooperation to mitigate the impact of the virus, urging citizens to stay vigilant and adhere to guidelines. The nation’s collective efforts in vaccination and adherence to safety measures remain vital in overcoming the challenges posed by the evolving dynamics of the pandemic.

The health authorities are expected to provide regular updates as the situation unfolds, and citizens are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their communities.

The country also recorded seven deaths during this period, with three reported in Kerala, two in Karnataka, and one each in Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu.

The cumulative count of COVID-19 cases in India since the outbreak in January 2020 has now reached 4,50,12,484, with an increase of 743 cases in the last 24 hours. The death toll due to COVID-19 in the country stands at 5,33,358, reflecting an increase of seven deaths in the same period.

On December 29, 2023, a total of 41,797 tests were conducted, according to the official report by the Indian Council of Medical Research.

India has also reported a total of 145 cases of the Covid-19 subvariant JN.1 till December 28. These cases were identified from samples collected between November 21 and December 18, 2023. The JN.1 subvariant is a descendant of the Omicron subvariant known as BA.2.86 or Pirola, and the first case of the JN.1 variant was reported in Kerala. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a variant of interest, distinct from its parent lineage BA.2.86. However, the WHO has emphasized that the overall risk posed by JN.1 remains low based on current evidence.

</excerpt>

The JN.1 sub-variant of Covid has emerged all over the world, the virus which started in the US and other countries, spread in India from Kerala, and now there are more than 63 proven JN.1 variants in India, said a doctor from one of the leading hospital groups on Tuesday.

Senior Consultant of Respiratory Medicine at Apollo Hospital, Dr Rajesh Chawla, said, “It spreads very fast. This is a variant of omicron, so it is likely to spread very fast. And gradually, it is going to replace the other variants and become the predominant variant. JN.1 is a mild COVID virus, and just like in Omicron, you did not see many patients of severe variety, and only a few patients had severe disease. In the same way, JN.1 is of mild variety. The symptoms of this include a runny nose, cough, fatigue, pain in the throat, and a hoarse voice, while some people may suffer from diarrhoea.”

He further said that as in the other variants, the symptoms are of the upper respiratory tract–nose and throat only–and that too are very mild with fever being an integral part of it.
“The biggest precaution against it is that if you have symptoms, especially if you have comorbidities, then you can get yourself tested. The RT-PCR test is still the best for this and most of the cases can be detected through it as 70 to 80 per cent of people who have Covid will be shown positive with this test.

I would not recommend people with very mild symptoms get this test, but people with comorbidities must get their test done,” he added.

</excerpt>

The new COVID-19 variant JN.1, that has been causing a spike in cases in the US since September this year, and more lately has been sweeping across Singapore with 56,000 cases as of date, has now been detected in India.

While it’s not clear if JN.1 variant is a cause of worry yet, it is clear that India has witnessed a spike in infection numbers. Cases are now at a seven-month high. Kerala has become a hotspot of COVID-19 outbreak again. With high literacy rates and advanced healthcare systems, Kerala’s disease surveillance is stronger, making it one of the first to report. It is thus possible that other states may have more cases.

While JN.1 resembles other upper respiratory infections caused by seasonal viruses, there is a strong compelling reason to put measures in place to prevent this from running through society. This is particularly important to protect vulnerable groups such as elderly or those with comorbid conditions.

What we do know is that JN.1 is highly transmissible, though not a serious threat by itself. However, it is known that severity of infection and Long COVID risk increases with reinfection. Long COVID may have long lasting effects on the heart, lung, brain or nerves, to name just a few outcomes. Brain fog and fatigue are common distressing manifestations. Long COVID may take several weeks to months to resolve.

Hence, the importance of treatment and preventing reinfections by adopting N95 masks, vaccination and social distancing. Public health measures should be enforced in all public places even for the healthy population. The crisis response system needs to be on high alert. When it comes to personal health, as the old adage goes, “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.”

</excerpt>

Kerala reported 265 fresh Covid-19 infections and one death in the last 24 hours, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The total number of active cases of Covid-19 in the country was recorded at 2,997.
Earlier on Thursday, India recorded 594 fresh COVID-19 infections – taking the number of active cases from 2,311 the previous day to 2,669, according to Union Health Ministry data.

Meanwhile, amid rising concerns over the emergence of the new variant of the Coronavirus, former World Health Organisation (WHO) chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan asserted that there is no need to panic currently as it is a variant of interest and not of concern.
However, she urged people to be cautious by taking proper precautionary measures.

Dr Soumya Swaminathan, former DG, of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said, “We need to be cautious, but we don’t need to worry because we don’t have any data to suggest that this variant JN.1 is more severe or it’s going to cause more pneumonia, more death.”
“I think what we need to do is try to take the normal preventive measures that we are all now familiar with. We were familiar with Omicron, so it’s the same family. So not much has changed, but 1 or 2 new mutations have come up. And that’s why I think WHO has said let’s keep a watch on it. It’s a variant of interest. It’s not a variant of concern,” said the doctor.

She further advised precautions to avoid infection, “Avoid being in a very closed environment with very poor ventilation with toxic people without a mask. So do wear a mask if you’re in that type of very close setting because prolonged exposure to somebody infected increases the risk of infection”
“Try to be in an open space rather than in most cases, have gatherings and now ventilated places today, entering into the season of gatherings,” said Swaminathan.
“If you have some warning symptoms and signs like severe fatigue, prolonged fever or you’re feeling breathless, visit the hospital,” she said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently classified JN.1 as a variant of interest, distinct from its parent lineage BA.2.86. However, the global health body emphasised that the overall risk posed by JN.1 remains low based on current evidence.

The ominous resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic has cast a shadow over India, with 358 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, out of which 300 emerged in Kerala. This surge has reignited memories of the fearful lockdowns and restrictions that defined the past two years. Amid the escalating situation, six individuals have succumbed to COVID-related complications, underscoring the seriousness of the current outbreak. The Union Health Ministry reports a total of 2,669 active cases across the country.

Yesterday’s spike of 614 cases, the highest since May, has set off alarm bells among health authorities. The driving force behind this surge is identified as the JN.1 variant of the virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a ‘variant of interest,’ acknowledging that current evidence suggests it doesn’t pose a major risk. However, concerns are raised about its potential to exacerbate respiratory infections, particularly with the onset of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, former WHO chief scientist talked with NDTV, and cautioned against downplaying COVID as a common cold, citing not only the severity of acute cases but also the lingering effects of the disease. The JN.1 variant, a sub-variant of Omicron, is noted for its increased transmissibility and ability to evade existing antibody responses, leading to waves of infections.

Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, Co-Chairman of the National Indian Medical Association Covid Task Force, expressed concerns about JN.1 being a multi-step ahead variant. He advised caution, particularly in enclosed and crowded spaces, emphasizing the importance of wearing masks. An advisory from the administration of Chandigarh echoes this sentiment, urging people to wear masks in crowded and closed settings while practicing hand hygiene.

The emerging situation prompted a high-level review by the Union Health Ministry, where Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya stressed the need to be alert and prepared against new and emerging strains of the virus. He urged all states to enhance surveillance and ensure adequate stocks of medicines, oxygen cylinders, and other essential supplies.

Symptoms of the JN.1 variant include fever, cough, loss of smell, and loss of taste. Dr. Swaminathan recommended heightened vigilance, especially in crowded places, and suggested the use of pulse oximeters for the vulnerable population. Authorities are determined not to underestimate the potential impact of the JN.1 variant, emphasizing the continued importance of public health measures to curb its spread.

As India confronts this new challenge, the nation remains vigilant, recognizing the evolving nature of the virus and the imperative to adapt strategies to safeguard public health. The coming days will be crucial in determining the trajectory of the current outbreak and the effectiveness of measures taken to mitigate its impact.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has reassured the state’s readiness as Covid cases surge in neighboring Kerala. Expressing concern over the escalating cases in Kerala, Rao recommended that senior citizens in Karnataka with co-morbidities wear masks as a precautionary measure. He emphasized that the state government is closely monitoring the situation in Kerala and is equipped with the necessary resources to address any potential challenges.

During a visit to Kodagu, Rao stated that a detailed advisory would be issued soon, and discussions on the matter were held in a meeting. As a proactive measure, he urged individuals aged over 60 with underlying health conditions to wear masks. The minister disclosed that the state government had instructed hospitals in districts bordering Kerala to remain alert and adequately equipped. Rao further pledged an increase in the number of Covid tests conducted in the state to identify and manage potential outbreaks effectively.

While addressing the public, Rao appealed for calm, assuring citizens that the situation is currently under control. The health minister is scheduled to convene a meeting with the Technical Advisory Committee on Covid, led by Dr. K Ravi, to enhance preparedness measures. The Union Ministry of Health has initiated preparedness measures following the identification of the JN.1 subvariant of COVID in Kerala, detected during routine surveillance conducted by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).

</excerpt>

Boris Johnson, who was forced to resign as British prime minister last year in the wake of controversies including the partygate scandal of COVID law-breaking parties at Downing Street, has been referred to police over new claims that he may have breached pandemic lockdown rules.
While Johnson has dismissed the allegations as “bizarre and unacceptable”, the UK Cabinet Office is said to have forwarded his ministerial diary entries from the time over concerns about certain visits to his prime ministerial country residence during the lockdown.
The Times newspaper, which first reported the development on Tuesday, said Johnson, 58, has been referred to Thames Valley Police because his ministerial diary revealed visits by family and friends to Chequers at a time when there were strict restrictions on inter-household mixing to contain the spread of coronavirus.
“In line with obligations in the Civil Service Code, this material has been passed to the relevant authorities, and it is now a matter for them,” the Cabinet Office said.
It said the information came to light during the process of preparing evidence for submission to the COVID inquiry, an independent review of the UK’s handling of the pandemic and its impact. Johnson, however, complained of a “politically motivated stitch-up” and insisted that all events in question were within the rules either because they were held outdoors or came within another “lawful exception”.
“The assertion by the Cabinet Office that there have been further COVID rule breaches is totally untrue,” Johnson’s spokesperson said.
