Thailand: Dramatic Rise in Covid Cases

Thailand’s Department of Disease Control reported 33,030 cases of Covid last week. This is double the figure of last week’s 16,000 cases. Bangkok alone contributed at least 6,000 new cases. Of the total, 1,918 patients were admitted to hospitals, and two deaths were reported in Sukhothai and Kanchanaburi provinces.

Authorities reported that a majority of infections are among the age group of 30 to 39 years. They called for the public to wear masks and take antigen test kits if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, or tiredness.

Singapore: Surge Attributed to New Strains

Singapore is also seeing an increase in Covid cases, from 11,100 to 14,200 cases in two weeks. The Ministry of Health has labeled LF.7 and NB.1.8, which are offsprings of variant JN.1, as the predominant strains responsible for infections. These variants are responsible for over two-thirds of locally sequenced cases.

The present Covid shots are prepared using the JN.1 variant. Officials attribute the surge to waning immunity and anticipate periodic waves like other endemic respiratory illnesses.

India Keeps Guard Up During Regional Spike

India’s health officials are keeping an eye on the Covid spike in neighboring nations such as Singapore and Hong Kong. A recent expert session, led by the Director General of Health Services, discussed the situation.

The experts opined that India’s Covid situation is still in control. On May 19, 2025, the nation had just 257 active cases, a very small figure in light of India’s size population. The government continues to promote caution and readiness.

Navigating the New wave

The Covid spike in Asia highlights the virus’s ongoing danger. Nations are weighing reopening with public health protection. New variants and declining immunity imply sporadic infections will persist.

Still, vaccination and early diagnosis remain key weapons. As Thailand and Singapore register growing cases, India’s subdued situation inspires hope and serves as a template for continued management.

Health authorities are urging the public to follow safety measures as infections rise.
</excerpt>

The United States is experiencing a sharp resurgence of COVID-19, with 1,500 deaths reported in just one week. From September 2 to September 8, the country saw 165,705 new cases, raising concerns across the nation.

COVID-19 Cases Surge Again

The recent spike comes at a time when the U.S. had begun to gain control over the pandemic. However, this latest wave is a reminder that the virus continues to pose a serious threat. Health officials are stressing the need for ongoing caution, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and vaccination booster shots to slow the spread.

Health Officials Urge Vigilance

As the numbers rise, health experts are calling for renewed vigilance. “We need to take these cases seriously,” said one official. “It’s crucial that people continue to follow safety guidelines and ensure they are vaccinated to protect themselves and others.”

Public Encouraged to Follow Guidelines

The public is being urged to wear masks in crowded spaces, stay updated on vaccines, and maintain good hygiene practices. The latest data highlights the ongoing danger of COVID-19, and health authorities are expected to release more updates as the situation evolves.

</excerpt>

The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized that Mpox, despite its increasing spread, is not comparable to COVID-19, and global efforts can successfully control the outbreak. Speaking at a media briefing on Tuesday, WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Kluge, urged for decisive international action to manage and eliminate mpox, cautioning that the world’s response will be a crucial test for future public health strategies.

“We can and must tackle mpox together,” Kluge stated. “The way we respond now and in the years to come will be a critical test for Europe and the world,” he added, stressing the need for robust systems to control and eliminate the virus.

Mpox, a viral infection that leads to pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms, is typically mild but can be fatal. Global concern has grown around the clade 1b variant, which spreads more easily through routine close contact. This variant was recently confirmed in Sweden and linked to a growing outbreak in Africa.

Kluge pointed out that the focus on the more severe clade 1 strain provides an opportunity to strengthen public health measures against the less severe clade 2 variety. He noted that approximately 100 new cases of the clade 2 strain are being reported monthly in the European region.

The briefing comes shortly after the WHO declared mpox outbreaks in Africa a global emergency. On Monday, Congo’s Health Minister Roger Kamba announced that the country would receive its first vaccine doses from the US next week to combat the outbreak. Mpox cases have been confirmed in children and adults across more than a dozen African countries, with a new variant of the virus emerging. However, vaccine availability remains limited on the continent.

Congo, which accounts for the majority of mpox cases worldwide, urgently needs around 3 million vaccine doses. The United States and Japan have offered to donate vaccines, although details regarding the number of doses and delivery timeline from Japan remain unclear.

The WHO has reported over 17,000 mpox cases and more than 500 deaths globally this year, with over 96% of cases and deaths occurring in Congo. Children under 15 represent more than 70% of the cases and 85% of the deaths in the country, which has long struggled with disease outbreaks due to its vast geography and inadequate infrastructure.

Koryo Tours and KTG Tours confirmed the news, marking the end of the country’s pandemic closure. North Korea has developed Samjiyon as a tourist destination amid strengthened ties with Russia.
</excerpt>

North Korea is set to reopen its borders to international tourists in December 2024, ending a long period of closure due to strict COVID-19 restrictions. Beijing-based Koryo Tours announced the development on Wednesday, stating that visitors will initially be welcomed to the northeastern city of Samjiyon, with plans to extend access to other parts of the country later.

Tour Operators’ Reaction

Koryo Tours, with over 30 years of experience in North Korean tourism, expressed excitement about the reopening. The operator noted that such an extended closure had been unprecedented in its history. Shenyang-based KTG Tours also confirmed that tourists could visit Samjiyon by the end of 2024.

Pandemic Impact and Recent Developments

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, North Korea has largely been closed off to international tourists, with only a few exceptions. A small group of Russian tourists visited in February 2023 following the resumption of international flights. Recent diplomatic engagements between North Korea and Russia, including visits by leaders Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin, have facilitated this gradual reopening.

Development of Samjiyon

North Korea has been preparing for the tourist influx by developing Samjiyon, a city near the Chinese border. The city is being marketed as a “model socialist utopia,” featuring new apartments, hotels, a ski resort, and various commercial, cultural, and medical facilities. Kim Jong Un recently addressed issues with the project by removing or demoting several senior officials.

Booking and Safety Measures

Koryo Tours, which previously assisted British television star Michael Palin with a travel documentary in 2018, will open bookings on its website once local partners finalize itineraries and dates. The company has emphasized its commitment to both safety and enjoyment for future visitors, stating, “Your safety is our priority. And your enjoyment too!”

On Monday, the Delhi High Court issued an interim order directing Baba Ramdev, Acharya Bal Krishan, and others to remove statements and social media posts that accuse allopathic medicine and doctors of causing deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. The court’s order is aimed at addressing concerns that promoting and advertising Patanjali’s Coronil as a COVID-19 treatment could mislead the public and potentially harm the credibility of Ayurveda.

The court observed that branding Coronil as a cure for COVID-19 might amount to mislabeling, which is prohibited under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The court has asked the relevant authorities to look into this issue but refrained from making further comments on the matter.

Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani instructed the defendants to remove their social media posts promoting Coronil as the sole cure for COVID-19 within three days. If they do not comply, social media platforms will be required to remove the content.

This order came in response to a lawsuit filed by various doctors’ associations against Ramdev. These associations challenged Ramdev’s claim that Coronil is a cure for COVID-19, arguing that it is only licensed as an “immuno-booster.” The plaintiffs have criticized the lack of scientific evidence supporting Ramdev’s claims and contended that such statements are misleading.

The senior counsel for the plaintiffs had previously sought an injunction to prevent further misleading claims about Coronil. They argued that the product’s official license only supports its use as an immunity booster, not a cure.

Ramdev’s senior lawyer assured the court that Ramdev would comply with an undertaking given to the Supreme Court regarding advertisements for Patanjali products and expressed willingness to provide a similar undertaking in the Delhi High Court. The lawyer pointed out that the previous Supreme Court undertaking was related to avoiding casual statements that did not meet legal standards.

Justice Bhambhani acknowledged the specific nature of the misleading claims in this case and reserved his decision. In 2021, several doctors’ associations, including those from AIIMS and other prominent institutions, had filed a lawsuit alleging that Ramdev’s statements undermined public trust in allopathic medicine and COVID-19 vaccines. They claimed that Ramdev was promoting misinformation to boost sales of Coronil and other Patanjali products.

US President Joe Biden, who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week, has completed his fourth dose of PAXLOVID, according to his physician. On Friday, Biden’s doctor, Kevin C. O’Connor, reported that the President continues to experience primary symptoms like a loose, non-productive cough and hoarseness. However, these symptoms have “improved meaningfully” since Thursday.

In a statement released by the White House on X, Dr. O’Connor detailed Biden’s condition: “President Biden completed his fourth dose of PAXLOVID this morning. His loose, non-productive cough and hoarseness continue to be his primary symptoms, but they have improved meaningfully from yesterday. His pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and temperature remain absolutely normal. His oxygen saturation continues to be excellent on room air. His lungs remain clear.”

Dr. O’Connor also noted that Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing on Thursday confirmed Biden’s SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) diagnosis. The specific variant is still being identified, but all of Biden’s bloodwork was normal, indicating no anaemia or bacterial infection. “The President continues to tolerate treatment well. We will continue PAXLOVID as planned. In the meantime, the President continues to do the work of the American people,” the doctor added.

Biden has been isolating at his Rehoboth Beach, Delaware home since testing positive on Wednesday while campaigning in Las Vegas. The 81-year-old President is vaccinated and has received COVID-19 booster shots, the latest being in September 2023, as per the White House.

Despite his illness, Biden vowed to return to the campaign trail next week to “save democracy,” as reported by The Hill. In a statement, Biden criticized former President Trump’s speech at the RNC on Thursday night, saying Trump focused on personal grievances without offering plans to improve the lives of working people.

“Last night the American people saw the same Donald Trump they rejected four years ago. For over 90 minutes, he focused on his own grievances, with no plan to unite us and no plan to make life better for working people,” Biden said on Friday. He asserted his determination to defeat Trump again in November, amid growing calls for him to withdraw from the race. These calls intensified on Friday when Senator Martin Heinrich became the third Democratic senator to urge Biden to drop out, joining four House Democrats who issued a joint statement asking the President to end his reelection bid.

</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden is currently experiencing “mild upper respiratory symptoms” from a recent COVID-19 infection and is continuing to take Paxlovid, as reported by his physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor. According to a statement from the White House, Biden does not have a fever, and his vital signs are stable. Dr. O’Connor confirmed, “The President is still experiencing mild upper respiratory symptoms associated with his recent COVID-19 infection. He continues to receive Paxlovid. He does not have a fever and his vital signs remain normal. He will continue to conduct the business of the American people.” He also noted, “With the President’s permission, I will continue to provide regular updates, as we have done before.”

Biden, 81, tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, a day after attending the NAACP National Convention in Las Vegas, where he criticized Donald Trump’s policies and spoke out against rising gun violence. The White House stated that Biden will return to Delaware for self-isolation but will maintain his duties during this period. Biden, who is fully vaccinated and received a booster in September 2023, reassured reporters before leaving Las Vegas that he felt fine and boarded Air Force One without a mask.

Following his positive test, Biden tweeted, “I tested positive for COVID-19 this afternoon, but I am feeling good and thank everyone for the well wishes.” He added, “I will be isolating as I recover, and during this time I will continue to work to get the job done for the American people.” Dr. O’Connor noted that Biden’s symptoms include a runny nose, non-productive cough, and general malaise. Initially feeling well enough for his first event of the day, Biden’s symptoms persisted, leading to a COVID-19 test that confirmed the infection. He will self-isolate at his Rehoboth home, following CDC guidelines for symptomatic individuals. The White House report specified that Biden’s respiratory rate, temperature, and pulse oximetry are normal.

Previously, in July 2022, Biden tested positive for COVID-19 for the first time and later experienced a rebound infection, requiring a second isolation period.

</excerpt>

A recent study led by researchers from the University of Zurich (UZH) and the University Hospital Zurich (USZ) has uncovered that approximately two percent of the population develop autoantibodies against type 1 interferons, primarily later in life. This makes them more vulnerable to viral infections, such as COVID-19.

Type 1 interferons are crucial proteins produced by immune cells in response to viral infections. They act as early messengers, alerting uninfected cells and tissues to the presence of a virus, enabling them to prepare defenses. However, in individuals with autoantibodies against type 1 interferons, this vital response is compromised.

The study found that severe viral infections, such as COVID-19 and influenza, can be more common in people with a weakened type 1 interferon response. According to the research, between 5 to 15% of those hospitalized with severe COVID-19 or influenza have a type 1 interferon response deficit due to the presence of autoantibodies that neutralize these critical proteins.

“We aimed to uncover why some people’s immune systems turn against themselves and understand the consequences of having autoantibodies against type 1 interferons,” explained Professor Benjamin Hale, the study’s lead researcher from the Institute of Medical Virology at UZH.

The research team utilized a vast collection of frozen blood samples from the Swiss HIV Cohort Study, which included samples from around 2,000 adults collected over several decades. This unique biobank allowed the researchers to analyze the presence and duration of autoantibodies against type 1 interferons.

The analysis revealed that around two percent of individuals develop autoantibodies against type 1 interferons during their lifetime, typically between the ages of 60 and 65. This finding aligns with previous studies suggesting that the prevalence of these autoantibodies increases with age.

Further investigation by researchers at USZ’s Department of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology identified factors contributing to the development of these autoantibodies. The study indicated that individuals who developed these autoantibodies were also prone to producing antibodies against other proteins made by their own bodies, a phenomenon known as loss of self-tolerance, which can occur with aging. “These individuals may produce antibodies against their own type 1 interferons due to their propensity to make autoantibodies and exposure to high levels of type 1 interferons from other infections,” noted Hale.

Significantly, the study found that once these autoantibodies developed, they remained detectable in the blood for the individual’s lifetime. Those with autoantibodies dating back to as early as 2008 were more likely to experience severe COVID-19 in 2020. “These autoantibodies have long-term consequences, leading to a compromised type 1 interferon system and reduced immunity against viruses,” Hale emphasized.

Understanding these risk factors could lead to future diagnostic tests to identify older individuals at higher risk of developing this deficiency. This could help implement preventive measures to avoid the development of autoantibodies and prioritize these individuals for vaccines or antivirals to prevent severe viral infections.

</excerpt>

Recent weeks have seen a concerning increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations across the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany. This uptick is linked to the spread of new variants known as FLiRT variants, which are derived from the omicron strain. As we grapple with these developments, it’s crucial to unpack what these variants mean for public health.

Current Situation:

Health officials have reported a rise in COVID-19 hospital admissions, particularly in areas where FLiRT variants are circulating more widely. These variants, named for specific mutations like Furin-like cleavage site, L452R, and T478K, are increasingly being detected in new cases. While their presence is notable, experts stress that there’s no clear evidence suggesting they cause more severe illness compared to earlier strains.

Insights from Experts

Dr. Paul Hunter, a professor of medicine at the University of East Anglia, notes that while hospitalizations are up, the severity of infections appears to be less severe than during previous waves of the pandemic. This is reassuring and highlights the role of hybrid immunity—protection from both prior infection and vaccination—in reducing severe outcomes.

Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, a COVID physician-scientist at Washington University in St. Louis, urges caution, emphasizing that it’s still early to fully understand the characteristics of FLiRT variants. He suggests that while some variants may spread more easily, their impact on illness severity is still being studied.

Factors Driving the Surge

The increase in COVID-19 cases during summer is partly due to declining population immunity. Immunity from past infections or vaccinations tends to weaken over time, leaving people more vulnerable to new variants like FLiRTs. This underscores the importance of ongoing vaccination efforts and booster doses to maintain strong protection against COVID-19.

Public Health Advice

In response to the rise in hospitalizations, health authorities stress the importance of continuing preventive measures. This includes wearing masks in crowded places, maintaining physical distance, and staying up to date with vaccination schedules. These precautions are especially critical for older adults and those with underlying health conditions, who are more susceptible to severe illness.

As COVID-19 continues to evolve, fluctuations in cases and hospitalizations are becoming a familiar part of our lives. The emergence of FLiRT variants reminds us of the need for ongoing vigilance and adaptable public health strategies. While the current increase in hospital admissions is concerning, our collective efforts in vaccination and preventive measures can help mitigate the impact of COVID-19 variants on global health.

</excerpt>

The origins of Barcelona’s financial woes can be traced back to 2010, a year that marked the end of Joan Laporta’s presidency due to term limits.

Rosell’s Presidency Tenure

The end of Joan Laporta’s presidency brought in Rosell. While Laporta was essentially taking suggestions from Cruyff and delegating them to the appropriate club members, one of the first things Rosell did was strip Cruyff of his title as the honorary president.

Rosell’s tenure was marred by controversy and alleged corruption, particularly surrounding Neymar’s transfer, which was partially financed by the dubious sale of Thiago Alcântara to Bayern Munich. Thiago’s contract included a €90 million release clause that would plummet to €18 million if he didn’t play a certain number of games. Strangely, despite his strong performances, Thiago was sidelined enough to trigger this lower release clause, during a period when manager Tito Vilanova was battling cancer. It’s speculated that Rosell influenced assistant manager Jordi Roura to bench Thiago, allowing the club to profit and shifting blame onto the player, who subsequently left for Bayern.

Rosell eventually resigned amidst the Neymar scandal, paving the way for his deputy, Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Bartomeu’s Presidency Tenure

Initially, Bartomeu enjoyed success, highlighted by Barcelona’s treble-winning season with the formidable Messi-Suárez-Neymar (MSN) trio under Luis Enrique. However, his administration’s deeper issues soon surfaced. Critics argue that Bartomeu’s actions transcended mere incompetence, suggesting ulterior motives possibly tied to his past with RCD Espanyol.

Under Bartomeu, Barcelona engaged in a series of misguided signings and managerial appointments. High-profile acquisitions like Philippe Coutinho, Antoine Griezmann, and Ousmane Dembélé failed to meet expectations, leading to substantial financial losses. Notably, the club overlooked Kylian Mbappé in favor of Dembélé, stating the former played for himself while the latter played for the team. Misguided attempts to replace club legends like Iniesta with ill-fitting players like Coutinho further strained the budget. The managerial choices, from Ernesto Valverde’s dependence on individual brilliance to Quique Setién’s lackluster tenure, only exacerbated the club’s decline.

Furthermore, Bartomeu’s administration allegedly engaged in nefarious activities, including hiring a media company to slander players and their families. The wage structure became unsustainable, with exorbitant salaries awarded under the guise of loyalty, severely limiting the club’s financial flexibility.

The socios, Barcelona’s voting members, eventually recognized the mismanagement, leading to Bartomeu’s resignation and Laporta’s return.

Laporta’s Second Presidency Tenure

Everype thought that with Laporta’s return, he would bring back the magic of his first tenure , however, without Cruyff’s influence, Laporta’s leadership mirrored the mistakes of his predecessor, with poor signings and managerial choices continuing to plague the club. Laporta’s faith in club legend Xavi as manager, despite better options being available, highlighted the ongoing lack of strategic vision.

The Financial Pressures

Barcelona’s financial mismanagement culminated in a bloated wage bill and massive debt, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on revenue streams. By 2021, the debt had soared past €1 billion, compelling the club to offload high-earning players at reduced prices. Financial constraints prevented the renewal of Lionel Messi’s contract under La Liga’s salary cap, resulting in his departure to Paris Saint-Germain.

The combination of excessive salaries, costly transfers, and chronic mismanagement plunged Barcelona into severe financial distress. This situation significantly undermined the club’s ability to retain top talent and maintain its competitive edge, with former financial advisor Marc Ciria estimating the debt could escalate to €3 billion.

Overall, the mismanagement of the Club and its funds has led to Barcelona’s financial ruin and further, its downfall as a club.

</excerpt>

A potential deadly bird flu pandemic, which experts warn could be “100 times worse” than COVID-19, may be looming following a rare human case discovered in Texas, according to a report by the New York Post. The H5N1 avian flu has rapidly spread since a new strain was detected in 2020, affecting wild birds in every state, as well as commercial poultry and backyard flocks. Recent cases in mammals, including infected cattle herds across four states and a dairy worker in Texas, have raised concerns.

Suresh Kuchipudi, a bird flu researcher, expressed alarm at a recent panel, stating, “This virus [has been] on the top of the pandemic list for many, many years and probably decades.”

He emphasized the virus’s ability to infect a range of mammalian hosts, including humans, suggesting it poses a significant global pandemic threat.

John Fulton, a pharmaceutical industry consultant, echoed these concerns, suggesting the potential for the bird flu to be “100 times worse” than COVID-19 if it mutates and maintains its high fatality rate. Currently, around 52% of humans who have contracted H5N1 since 2003 have died, compared to COVID-19’s current fatality rate of less than 0.1%.

Symptoms of the bird flu are similar to other flus, including cough, body aches, and fever. Severe pneumonia can also occur, leading to life-threatening complications.

“While cases among humans in direct contact with infected animals are possible, this indicates that the current risk to the public remains low,” the US Department of Agriculture stated. However, the virus’s presence in cattle suggests it may be mutating, which could increase the risk of human transmission.

Efforts are underway to develop a vaccine for the virus, with the US already testing components used to create a vaccine. Two candidate vaccine viruses appear to be well-matched to protect against H5N1. The Biden administration is monitoring the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of keeping communities healthy, safe, and informed.

In the latest update from India’s health ministry, the country has reported a single-day rise of 760 new COVID-19 cases, accompanied by two additional fatalities within the past 24 hours. The data, released at 8 am, reveals one death each in Kerala and Karnataka. The total number of active cases has been tallied at 4,423.

The decline in daily cases observed until December 5 has been reversed, with numbers surging again, attributed to the emergence of a new variant and the onset of cold weather conditions. While the pandemic’s peak witnessed daily case numbers in the lakhs, the recent uptick is a cause for concern.

Since the pandemic’s onset in early 2020, India has reported over 4.5 crore COVID-19 infections, with more than 5.3 lakh deaths. The health ministry’s website indicates that over 4.4 crore individuals have successfully recovered from the virus, reflecting a national recovery rate of 98.81 percent.

Notably, the country has administered a significant number of COVID-19 vaccine doses, reaching a total of 220.67 crore. This ongoing vaccination effort plays a crucial role in the nation’s fight against the virus, aiming to reduce severe cases, hospitalizations, and fatalities.

As the nation grapples with the evolving situation, authorities are closely monitoring the impact of the new variant and implementing measures to curb the spread. The rise in daily cases serves as a reminder for citizens to adhere to safety protocols, including vaccination, wearing masks, and practicing social distancing.

The health ministry continues to stress the importance of public cooperation to mitigate the impact of the virus, urging citizens to stay vigilant and adhere to guidelines. The nation’s collective efforts in vaccination and adherence to safety measures remain vital in overcoming the challenges posed by the evolving dynamics of the pandemic.

The health authorities are expected to provide regular updates as the situation unfolds, and citizens are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their communities.

The national capital reported its first case of Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 last week.

According to an official, reports of 19 samples sent for genome sequencing were received on Monday. Out of these, 15 samples were detected with JN.1 variant, two with the XBB sub-variant, and the rest with other variants, the officials said.

“The first patient got admitted to a hospital because she was scared, but she only had mild symptoms. She was discharged within a few days.
The 15 patients were detected with JN.1 variant are under home isolation and have no discomfort. Four of them have also recovered,” said an official.

The official said that there was nothing to worry about.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said Covid-19 cases being reported recently are mild infections and that there was no reason to worry.

The situation in Delhi is under control and there has been no huge rise in cases, Bharadwaj said.

“The information received about the disease so far from Delhi and neighbouring states has suggested that the cases are mild. Some people have a mild cough and cold, and some have a mild fever. People are recovering from the disease quickly. As of now, there is nothing to worry about,” he said.

A total of 312 cases of Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected in the country so far, with about 47 per cent of them recorded in Kerala, according to the INSACOG’s data updated on Tuesday.

Adding a new dimension to the situation, Delhi reported its first case of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 on Wednesday. Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj stated, “Delhi reports the first case of JN.1, a Sub-Variant of Omicron. Out of the three samples sent for Genome Sequencing, one is JN.1, and two are Omicron.”

The JN.1 sub-variant, a descendant of the Omicron subvariant known as BA.2.86 or Pirola, was initially reported in Kerala. Health Ministry sources have identified a total of 109 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant in India until now. However, the World Health Organisation has emphasized that the overall risk posed by JN.1 remains low based on current evidence.

</excerpt>

Karnataka on Tuesday reported 74 fresh cases of Covid-19 and two coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours. This takes the total number of active cases in the state to 464, a Health bulletin said. With this, the total number of Covid-19 related deaths in the state after the recent spike in cases stands at 9.

According to the bulletin issued by the Health department, in the last 24 hours, as many as 44 patients have been discharged and a total of 6,403 tests have been conducted including 4,680 RT-PCR and 1,723 Rapid Antigen tests. Positivity rate stands at 1.15 per cent while case fatality rate stands at 2.70 per cent.

The maximum number of tests were conducted in Bengaluru. Out of the 2,104 tests conducted, 57 have been found positive for the virus, which is the highest as compared to other districts of the state. The two deceased were aged 51. One of them was admitted in Dakshina Kannada with symptoms of fever, cough and breathlessness on December 22. He had severe acute respiratory infection and died on December 23. He was not vaccinated. The other patient was admitted in Mysuru with symptoms of cough and breathlessness on December 20 and died on December 25. He also had a severe acute respiratory infection but was vaccinated, the bulletin stated.

As of Tuesday, the total active cases reported in the state stands at 464. Out of these, 423 people are in home isolation while the remaining 41 are hospitalised. Among those hospitalised, 16 have been admitted to ICU and 25 are admitted in the general ward, it added.

Amid a spike in cases and detection of JN.1 infections in the state, the Karnataka government’s cabinet sub-committee on coronavirus have advised people to wear masks, not send children with symptoms to schools, adhere to COVID appropriate behaviour like social distancing, seven days home isolation and leave for infected patients. It has also decided to administer “precautionary vaccine” for the aged and those with comorbidities and to get 30,000 doses of Corbevax vaccine from the Centre for this purpose.

</excerpt>

The new COVID-19 variant JN.1, that has been causing a spike in cases in the US since September this year, and more lately has been sweeping across Singapore with 56,000 cases as of date, has now been detected in India.

While it’s not clear if JN.1 variant is a cause of worry yet, it is clear that India has witnessed a spike in infection numbers. Cases are now at a seven-month high. Kerala has become a hotspot of COVID-19 outbreak again. With high literacy rates and advanced healthcare systems, Kerala’s disease surveillance is stronger, making it one of the first to report. It is thus possible that other states may have more cases.

While JN.1 resembles other upper respiratory infections caused by seasonal viruses, there is a strong compelling reason to put measures in place to prevent this from running through society. This is particularly important to protect vulnerable groups such as elderly or those with comorbid conditions.

What we do know is that JN.1 is highly transmissible, though not a serious threat by itself. However, it is known that severity of infection and Long COVID risk increases with reinfection. Long COVID may have long lasting effects on the heart, lung, brain or nerves, to name just a few outcomes. Brain fog and fatigue are common distressing manifestations. Long COVID may take several weeks to months to resolve.

Hence, the importance of treatment and preventing reinfections by adopting N95 masks, vaccination and social distancing. Public health measures should be enforced in all public places even for the healthy population. The crisis response system needs to be on high alert. When it comes to personal health, as the old adage goes, “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.”

</excerpt>

A total of 656 cases of Covid-19 subvariant JN.1 and one death have been reported in the country for the past 24 hours, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total number of active cases of Covid-19 in the country was recorded at 3,742.
Earlier on Saturday, a multi-fold spurt in fresh COVID cases was noted in India, with Kerala contributing the majority of those.
A total of 423 cases were reported, of which 266 were from Kerala and 70 from neighbouring Karnataka, Union health ministry data showed.
Two deaths were reported in Kerala.

Meanwhile, former AIIMS director and senior pulmonologist, Dr Randeep Guleria said that the new subvariant of COVID is not causing severe infections and hospitalisation.
“It is more transmissible, it is spreading more rapidly, and it is gradually becoming a dominant variant. It is causing more infections but the data also suggests that it is not causing severe infections or hospitalisations. Most of the symptoms are predominantly in the upper airways, like fever, cough, cold, sore throat, running nose and body aches,” Dr Guleria said.

Earlier, India SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) chief Dr NK Arora also said that no additional dose of vaccine is needed against the subvariant at present.
Dr Arora further said, “I would say prevention is required for all those who are 60 years of age or older, who are likely to have comorbidities and those who are on drugs that suppress our immunity, like cancer patients. If they have not taken precaution so far, then they are advised to take precaution; otherwise, there is no need for any additional doses.”
The INSACOG chief asserted that various subvariants of Omicron have been reported but none of them have increased severity.

He reiterated the fact that there is no need for panic but that it requires vigilance. “I would like to assure everybody that we need to be vigilant, but not panicky at all,” he added.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently classified JN.1 as a variant of interest, distinct from its parent lineage BA.2.86. However, the global health body emphasised that the overall risk posed by JN.1 remains low based on current evidence.
Due to its rapidly increasing spread, WHO is classifying the variant JN.1 as a separate variant of interest (VOI) from the parent lineage BA.2.86.
It was previously classified as VOI as part of BA.2.86 sublineages.

</excerpt>

India once again faces a surge in the Covid-19 cases. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare released a data of total number of active cases that turned out to be 2,997. Kerala reported 265 fresh Covid-19 cases and one death in the last 24 hours alone. There were 594 cases of Covid-19 on Thursday taking the number of active cases from 2,311 on the previous day to a total of 2,669, according to Union Health Ministry data.

Meanwhile, former Chief Scientist of the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, amid growing concern about the emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus, asserted that there is no need to panic now because it is interesting but definitely not alarming. However, Dr. Swaminathan urged people to take all the necessary precautions for their well being.

Former Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr. Swaminathan also mentioned that, people must remain cautious but they do not need to worry about the new variant as there isn’t any data that suggests that this variant JN.1 is more severe or causes pneumonia leading to more deaths.

“I think what we need to do is try to take the normal preventive measures that we are all now familiar with. We were familiar with Omicron, so it’s the same family. So not much has changed, but 1 or 2 new mutations have come up. And that’s why I think WHO has said let’s keep a watch on it. It’s a variant of interest. It’s not a variant of concern,” said the doctor. In addition, she insisted upon avoiding being in very closed environments with very poor ventilation and toxic people without a mask as a prolonged contact with an infected person increases the risk of infection.

She further advised, “Try to be in an open space rather than closed. In most cases, people have gatherings in ventilated places today, entering into the season of gatherings.” She continued, “If you have some warning symptoms and signs like severe fatigue, prolonged fever or you’re feeling breathless, visit the hospital.”

However, the World Health Organization emphasized that, based on current evidence, the overall risk of JN.1 remains low.

The ominous resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic has cast a shadow over India, with 358 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, out of which 300 emerged in Kerala. This surge has reignited memories of the fearful lockdowns and restrictions that defined the past two years. Amid the escalating situation, six individuals have succumbed to COVID-related complications, underscoring the seriousness of the current outbreak. The Union Health Ministry reports a total of 2,669 active cases across the country.

Yesterday’s spike of 614 cases, the highest since May, has set off alarm bells among health authorities. The driving force behind this surge is identified as the JN.1 variant of the virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a ‘variant of interest,’ acknowledging that current evidence suggests it doesn’t pose a major risk. However, concerns are raised about its potential to exacerbate respiratory infections, particularly with the onset of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, former WHO chief scientist talked with NDTV, and cautioned against downplaying COVID as a common cold, citing not only the severity of acute cases but also the lingering effects of the disease. The JN.1 variant, a sub-variant of Omicron, is noted for its increased transmissibility and ability to evade existing antibody responses, leading to waves of infections.

Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, Co-Chairman of the National Indian Medical Association Covid Task Force, expressed concerns about JN.1 being a multi-step ahead variant. He advised caution, particularly in enclosed and crowded spaces, emphasizing the importance of wearing masks. An advisory from the administration of Chandigarh echoes this sentiment, urging people to wear masks in crowded and closed settings while practicing hand hygiene.

The emerging situation prompted a high-level review by the Union Health Ministry, where Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya stressed the need to be alert and prepared against new and emerging strains of the virus. He urged all states to enhance surveillance and ensure adequate stocks of medicines, oxygen cylinders, and other essential supplies.

Symptoms of the JN.1 variant include fever, cough, loss of smell, and loss of taste. Dr. Swaminathan recommended heightened vigilance, especially in crowded places, and suggested the use of pulse oximeters for the vulnerable population. Authorities are determined not to underestimate the potential impact of the JN.1 variant, emphasizing the continued importance of public health measures to curb its spread.

As India confronts this new challenge, the nation remains vigilant, recognizing the evolving nature of the virus and the imperative to adapt strategies to safeguard public health. The coming days will be crucial in determining the trajectory of the current outbreak and the effectiveness of measures taken to mitigate its impact.

Amid concerns about the new variant of the Coronavirus, a health expert from Kerala emphasized that COVID is akin to any other communicable disease and cannot be completely eradicated. Dr. Sreejith N Kumar stated that while COVID cannot be wiped out entirely, the strike rate of the disease has reduced, and mortality is not as high as before. He likened it to any other influenza or common cold.

In response to the rising cases and concerns over emerging strains, Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a high-level meeting to review the COVID-19 situation in India. He urged vigilance and preparedness against new and emerging strains of the virus. Stressing the importance of being alert, Mandaviya called on all states to enhance surveillance and ensure sufficient stocks of essential medical supplies, including medicines, oxygen cylinders, concentrators, ventilators, and vaccines.

Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the need for joint efforts between the Centre and States to efficiently manage COVID-19, proposing mock drills every three months at both levels to share best practices. He urged states to create awareness, manage the epidemic, and disseminate accurate information.

With the World Health Organisation (WHO) highlighting the evolution of the virus and the new JN.1 COVID sub-variant, member states were urged to maintain robust surveillance and share sequences to adapt to the changing nature of the virus.

Expressing concern over the escalating cases in Kerala, Rao recommended that senior citizens in Karnataka with co-morbidities wear masks as a precautionary measure. He emphasized that the state government is closely monitoring the situation in Kerala and is equipped with the necessary resources to address any potential challenges.

During a visit to Kodagu, Rao stated that a detailed advisory would be issued soon, and discussions on the matter were held in a meeting. As a proactive measure, he urged individuals aged over 60 with underlying health conditions to wear masks. The minister disclosed that the state government had instructed hospitals in districts bordering Kerala to remain alert and adequately equipped. Rao further pledged an increase in the number of Covid tests conducted in the state to identify and manage potential outbreaks effectively.

While addressing the public, Rao appealed for calm, assuring citizens that the situation is currently under control. </excerpt>

In response to an increase in respiratory illnesses, particularly pneumonia cases, among children in Northern China, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced on Thursday that experts would conduct tests to identify the circulating pathogen and determine whether it warrants special attention.

The diagnostic method, known as multiplex PCR, involves the simultaneous amplification of different DNA sequences. This test will be performed on samples obtained from Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Hospital and Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya.

Expressing concern over the situation, Bharadwaj issued directives to the state health department to ensure an ample supply of anti-viral drugs specifically for children in the city. Additionally, he mandated COVID-like preparedness in the pediatric departments of city hospitals.

To address public concerns, Bharadwaj emphasized that a basic advisory would be issued to prevent unnecessary panic. He highlighted the expected rise in seasonal health issues such as cough, cold, and influenza as temperatures decrease, particularly in the upcoming month of January.

In a collaborative effort with experts from government hospitals, including pulmonologists and pediatric pulmonologists, Bharadwaj stated that, as of now, there is no unidentified pathogen in circulation. He underscored that during this season, various bacterial and viral pathogens are commonly observed among patients.

Concerns about respiratory illnesses have escalated, prompting the Union Health Ministry to conduct a comprehensive review of preparedness measures. Advisories have been issued to all states and union territories, urging an immediate review of public health and hospital preparedness. This includes assessing the availability of human resources, hospital beds, influenza drugs and vaccines, medical oxygen, antibiotics, personal protective equipment, testing kits, reagents, the functionality of oxygen plants and ventilators, and infection control practices in health facilities. The Union Health Secretary’s letter stresses the importance of senior-level attention to these measures in light of the situation in China.

The summit was attended by the health ministers of the G7 countries and invited “Outreach 4” countries of India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand.

“Use of technology and Digital Health Tools are an enabler and equalizer which can facilitate strengthened health service delivery and aid in the achievement of Universal Health Coverage,” Dr. Mandaviya stated in a speech for the occasion. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of technology in the provision of health services and brought attention to the need to concentrate on an enabling framework to close the digital divide among nations, particularly among low- and middle-income nations.

The Union Health Minister praised India for its accomplishments in digital health, stating that “India’s COVID-19 vaccine delivery platform, Co-WIN, has monitored the administration of over 2.2 billion vaccine doses across the length and breadth of the country and monitored not only cold chain management but also assisted citizens and vaccine recipients in administration of the vaccines in addition to providing a QR code-based digital vaccine certificate.”

Similar to this, the largest telemedicine platform in the world, eSanjeevani, a national platform that was introduced during the pandemic, has already organised more than 115 million free consultations for citizens.

Emphasizing the need to embrace the advantages offered by new and evolving tools, Dr Mandaviya highlighted that artificial intelligence, smart wearables and big data analytics can aid precision medicine, personalized healthcare, genomics, and Clinical Decision Support Systems, ensuring the right treatment to the right person at the right time.

He also underlined the importance of ensuring the availability of these technological tools and stated, “India has already taken a policy decision to provide all such digital tools free of cost to the world as Digital Public Goods.”

Dr Mandaviya also stated that India’s G20 Presidency has brought digital health as a specific priority and has proposed the convergence mechanisms of all digital initiatives across the world through the formation of the Global Initiative on Digital Health housed at World Health Organization HQ.

He emphasised the importance of the proposed network-of-networks concept in closing the digital divide globally and pleaded with the G7 nations to support it.

</excerpt>

Amid rising Covid across the country, doctors have advised people to take necessary precautions and not ignore suspected Covid-19 symptoms as the prevailing weather is conducive to the virus’s spread across the country, including the national capital. There has been a sharp upward spiral in Covid cases over the last few days, with about 3,000 cases being reported daily across the country. The national capital has also seen a marked increase in cases, with the daily count of infections pegged at over 400. The number of hospitalisations has also gone up in the national capital, with the BLK Hospital reporting a surge in the number patients with symptoms such as cough, cold, and fever, among others.
The director and HOD of Chest and Respiratory departments, BLK Hospital, Dr Sandeep Nayar said the daily count of patients with symptoms like cough, cold, and fever in OPD has increased. “Most of the patients are recovering by staying at home. Also, since the onset of the pandemic, many people have also been taking online medical consultations,” he added.
Nayar said at present, only a lone Covid patient is admitted at BLK Hospital, adding that he is comorbid.
“Only people suffering from heart lung ailments and cancer, among others, are at a greater risk of catching Covid. If infected, they need to be hospitalised,” he said.
The doctor added that the weather at this time is favourable for the spread of any virus or infection.
“This is why we are seeing a rise in different infections and viral cases. Symptoms such as cough, cold, and fever are being seen in people. Also, over the last several months, people have stopped wearing masks, which is one of the reasons why the cases have increased,” he added.
Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya also advised people to be cautious in view of the prevailing Covid situation.
Nayar said BLK is seeing a surge in patients complaining of symptoms such as cough, cold, fever, and body ache, among others. However, most patients are recovering in home isolation.
He said, “If symptoms like cough, fever, or cold persist, do not ignore them and see a doctor at the earliest. This infection first affects our lungs when it enters our body through the mouth and nose. That’s why, if you have a cough for a long time, do not ignore it. Consult a doctor at the earliest.” He also advised people of all ages to wear masks and to avoid congested areas. He emphasised the importance of adopting Covid-appropriate behaviour in order to limit the spread of the Covid sub-variant.
