Black Market Ticket Sales Exposed in Ahmedabad

In an unrelated incident, black marketing Coldplay concert tickets arrested an Ahmedabad pair accused of selling the tickets at an inflated rate. Vatsal Kothari (26), and Bisap Khalas (30), were the two men held for attempting to sell four concert tickets at varied prices. The two men had bought four tickets on the net for an amount of ₹12,500 each but were caught selling them at ₹ 20,000, according to a news release from the Ahmedabad city police.

Apart of their “Music of the Spheres World Tour,” the famous British rock band will play two shows at the venue, attracting an expected audience of up to one lakh people over the weekend.

Complex Security Deployment

Neeraj Kumar Badgujar, Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) at Ahmedabad, said, “More than 3,800 police officers are mobilized along with metal detectors and undercover officers including female personnel. Units are based at the venue as well as on crime branch groups. Over 400 CCTV equipment are in place too to track the event.

He added, “All guests will undergo rigorous security checks and special barricades will be installed to keep people from entering without screening.”

The venue will be watched by more than 400 cameras

National Security Guard members are deployed at strategic locations.

Special Forces consist of Quick Response Teams (QRT), Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) members.

Emergency Plans: Along with the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority, medical teams are on call and disaster and evacuation plans have been arranged.

Details of the India Tour

Coldplay will kick off their tour at Mumbai’s DY Patil Sports Stadium with performances on January 18, 19, and 21. Before the band takes the stage, attendees will enjoy live acts by Shone, Elyanna, and Jasleen Royal.

The concert will shift to Ahmedabad where Coldplay is scheduled to perform on 25 and 26 January at Narendra Modi Stadium. The band is scheduled to leave for Hong Kong in April and later South Korea that month.

The British rock band is Chris Martin, the vocalist and pianist; Jonny Buckland, the guitarist; Guy Berryman, the bassist; Will Champion, the drummer, and percussionist; and the band’s manager, Phil Harvey.

Special Travel Arrangements

To cater to fans traveling between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, Western Railway will run two special trains on January 25 and 26. These “winter specials” are aimed at managing the extra rush caused by the concerts amid rising airfares and full trains.

The official release said both the trains would leave Bandra Terminus at 6:15 am and reach Ahmedabad at 2:00 pm on January 25 and 1:00 pm on January 26. On its way back, one of the trains would leave Ahmedabad at 1:40 am on January 26 and reach Bandra Terminus at 8:40 am. The second train would leave Ahmedabad at 12:50 am on January 27 and reach Mumbai by 8:30 am.

The stops on the way are Borivali, Vapi, Udhna, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, and Gertapur. According to officials, air travel between Mumbai and Ahmedabad has become very expensive because of the concerts, hence the special services.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has initiated a widespread search operation across five states—Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Chandigarh, and Bangalore—regarding the illegal ticket sales for Coldplay’s concerts and Diljit Dosanjh’s “Dil-Luminati.” This action follows numerous FIRs filed in various states concerning fraudulent ticket sales.

The concerts, part of Coldplay’s “Music of the Spheres World Tour” and Diljit Dosanjh’s “Dil-Luminati,” created a buzz among music fans, leading to a swift sellout of tickets on official platforms like Bookmyshow and Zomato Live. However, the overwhelming demand resulted in black-market ticket sales at inflated prices, with many individuals reportedly falling victim to scams involving fake tickets.

Bookmyshow has filed an FIR against several suspects, alleging they were selling counterfeit tickets and inflating prices to exploit concertgoers. In response, the ED has launched an investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, conducting searches at over 13 locations across the five states and seizing incriminating evidence such as mobile phones, laptops, and SIM cards associated with the scam.

“Multiple FIRs have been filed in various states across the country, including one by Bookmyshow against several suspects believed to be exploiting concertgoers. The FIR alleges that these individuals have engaged in selling counterfeit tickets and drastically inflating prices, taking advantage of the high demand for these coveted concerts,” stated the probe agency.

The ED’s investigation aims to uncover illegal ticket sales, reveal the financial networks behind these scams, and trace the proceeds of crime generated from these activities. It has been found that many individuals used social media platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Telegram to sell fake tickets.

“Normally, tickets are available on platforms like Zomato, Bookmyshow, and others. However, when concert demand is very high, these tickets sell out quickly, leading people to seek alternate sources. Searches and investigations conducted by the ED have revealed information about multiple individuals known for providing fake tickets through social media using Instagram, WhatsApp, and Telegram,” the ED commented.

Regarding Diljit Dosanjh’s India tour, he has recently performed in the US and Europe. Following his overseas tour, Diljit is set to kick off the Indian leg of his tour. After concerts in Delhi on October 26 and 27, the tour will proceed to Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore, Indore, Chandigarh, and Guwahati.

Centre Receives Court Notice Over Unethical Ticket Re-sales For Coldplay, Diljit Dosanjh Shows

The Delhi High Court on Thursday requested a response from the Centre and other relevant authorities regarding the unauthorised resale of tickets for upcoming concerts by Diljit Dosanjh and Coldplay in India.

This followed a plea urging the creation and enforcement of a regulatory framework to govern the sale of concert and event tickets through authorised platforms. The petition called for the Centre to prevent unlawful re-sellers from operating in the country.

Diljit Dosanjh’s “Dil-Luminati Tour” is set for October 26 and 27 at Delhi’s JLN Stadium, while British rock band Coldplay is scheduled to perform in Mumbai from January 19 to 21, 2025.

A bench consisting of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela issued notices to the Union Ministries of Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology, as well as StubHub Inc, Viagogo Entertainment Inc, and Bigtree Entertainment Pvt Ltd.

The petitioner’s lawyer, Rajshekhar Rao, highlighted that tickets are being resold at inflated prices. He stated, “Tax liabilities are only on the seller, the website charges a huge premium fee. The websites (StubHub and Viagogo) have no office or presence in India. They’re not paying any taxes.”

Rao also noted the increase in black marketing, despite BookMyShow, which holds exclusive rights to Coldplay tickets, advising the public to avoid unauthorised sales.

When the court inquired if a regulatory framework was necessary to combat ticket black marketing, the lawyer described it as “sophisticated black marketing,” requiring systemic regulation.

The High Court directed that replies be submitted within four weeks and scheduled a follow-up hearing for February 18, 2025, alongside a similar case.

Previously, the court had asked for responses regarding a plea that alleged “illegal, manipulative, and exploitive” ticket scalping practices.

Tickets for Dosanjh‘s shows sold out within hours, but were being resold at exorbitant prices, with Gold category tickets, originally priced between ₹4,000 and ₹9,000, being offered for up to ₹20,000. Similarly, Coldplay tickets, initially priced from ₹2,500 to ₹35,000, were being resold for as high as ₹3 lakh on platforms like Viagogo.

BookMyShow, holding exclusive rights to Coldplay tickets, filed a complaint against third-party platforms and announced that unethically sold tickets might be cancelled.

Until 2023, unauthorised ticket resale was not explicitly considered a criminal offense in Indian law, except under certain state laws, such as the Maharashtra Entertainment Duty Act. However, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, introduced in July, now includes Section 112, which addresses “petty organised crime,” including penalties for unauthorised ticket resales.
