</excerpt>

China is bracing for a severe cold wave, with temperatures forecast to drop over 10°C below the seasonal average in many regions. Northern areas are particularly affected, with Shenyang expecting a 13°C plunge and Yinchuan set to reach lows of -8°C. Snowstorms have blanketed northwestern regions, with some areas reporting snow accumulation of up to 8cm.

The extreme cold is driven by a weakened polar vortex, allowing frigid air from the north to spread further south. This is compounded by the Siberian high-pressure system, which is funneling cold, dry air into China, intensifying the already low temperatures.

Snowstorms and Travel Disruptions

The cold wave has caused heavy snowfall in northwestern China, raising concerns about travel disruptions during the festive season. Additional snowfall is expected later in the week, which may further hinder transportation and holiday plans.

Cold Air Spreads to Thailand

The cold air mass over China has extended into Thailand, causing significant drops in temperature and strong winds. Northern, central, and eastern regions of Thailand, including Bangkok, have experienced 2-4°C falls, with northeastern areas seeing drops of 3-5°C.

Meteorologists have also predicted that the La Niña phenomenon will bring stronger winds, increased humidity, frequent thunderstorms, and cooler-than-average temperatures in the coming months.

Blizzard Conditions in Alaska

Meanwhile, Alaska is battling its own extreme weather, with heavy rain, strong winds, and snowstorms causing significant disruptions. Gusts of up to 70mph (116km/h) lashed southern Alaska, resulting in widespread flooding in low-lying areas.

Avalanche warnings have been issued for Turnagain Pass, Summit Lake, and Chugach State Park due to unstable snow conditions caused by a combination of intense winds, rainfall, and snowfall. Temperatures in Alaska are expected to plunge further by the end of the week, bringing the coldest polar air of the season.

Conclusion

The severe weather conditions in China and Alaska highlight the impact of climate phenomena like the polar vortex and La Niña. As these regions grapple with snowstorms, avalanches, and plunging temperatures, weather authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure safety during this challenging period.

Delhi woke up to dense fog on Wednesday, as a cold wave swept through the city. This brought a sharp drop in temperatures and chilly winds, which resulted in poor visibility.

Weather Forecast

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperature is expected to drop to 8°C, while the maximum will remain around 16°C. Additionally, “very dense fog” is anticipated throughout the day.

Homeless Seek Shelter

As a result of the cold weather, many homeless people sought shelter in night homes across the city. In areas like Sarai Kale Khan, Ram Leela Maidan, and Nigam Bodh Ghat, all the beds in these shelters were occupied. To provide additional support, the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) set up 235 pagoda tents. Furthermore, night shelters have been established in areas such as AIIMS, Lodhi Road, and Nizamuddin flyover.

Residents Gather Around Bonfires

To cope with the dropping temperatures, residents were seen gathering around bonfires. According to the IMD, the minimum temperature on Tuesday was recorded at 10.5°C.

Air Quality

Meanwhile, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi stood at 326 at 6 am on Wednesday, which is categorized as “very poor” by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). In fact, Delhi’s AQI has been in the “very poor” category for several days. The AQI is classified as follows: 0-50 (good), 51-100 (satisfactory), 101-200 (moderate), 201-300 (poor), 301-400 (very poor), and 401-500 (severe).

Air Quality Measures

On Sunday, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) revoked Stage-III actions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) due to an improvement in air quality. However, Stage-I and Stage-II measures are still in effect.

Weather Outlook

Looking ahead, the dense fog, chilly winds, and low temperatures are expected to persist over the next few days. Therefore, residents are advised to stay warm and minimize outdoor activities, particularly during the early morning and evening hours.

This marks a significant dip in temperatures, with Wednesday’s minimum recorded at 4.9°C. The IMD noted that this is the first time in 14 years that early December temperatures have fallen below 5°C. Historical data reveals that the lowest December minimum temperature was recorded on December 6, 1987, at 4.1°C.

Cold Wave Conditions Persist in Delhi

The IMD has predicted that cold wave conditions will continue in Delhi from December 11 to 13. While there were no recorded cold wave days in December 2022 and 2023, November 2020 did witness similar conditions, with temperatures plunging to 7.5°C. A cold wave is classified when the minimum temperature is 4.5°C to 6.4°C below the normal day temperature. If the departure exceeds 6.4°C, it is termed a “severe cold wave.”

Chilly Weather Grips Rajasthan

The cold wave also impacted parts of Rajasthan, where temperatures dropped significantly over the past 24 hours. The Jaipur Meteorological Centre reported that Sikar recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 1.5°C on Tuesday night. Extreme cold wave conditions were observed in isolated locations, while several areas reported cold wave conditions.

Temperature Range Across Rajasthan

According to the IMD, the minimum temperature across various locations in Rajasthan ranged between 1.5°C and 10.8°C. Cold day conditions were noted in some areas, while most of the state experienced dry weather. The weather department continues to monitor the situation closely as cold air tightens its grip on northern India.

Outlook for the Coming Days

With temperatures expected to remain low, residents in Delhi and Rajasthan are advised to take precautions against the chilly winds. The IMD’s forecast highlights the need for preparedness as chilly winds continue to dominate the region.

The hilly district of Nilgiri experience frost annually from November to February, however, this time frost is observed during late January due to the stormy rains. Ooty and he surrounding cities including Kanthal, Pinker Post and Thalai Kuntha also experiences Icy plains.

The severe cold has disrupted the daily life of people. Many are unable to even come out of their homes due. Bonfires are being used to keep the warmth. The green lawns are covered with a white carpet, event he vehicles are covered under a thin layer of ice sheet. People living on the upper reaches of Tamil Nadu are unaccustomed to such severe dropping of temperature. It is almost impossible to leave the house.

Vast expanses of grasslands in the Nilgiris district resembled a magical realm, adorned with the glistening beauty of fresh dew drops commonly referred to as white frost, adorning the lush green carpet of grass. This enchanting phenomenon graced numerous areas of the well-known hill station, including Ooty Nagar, Thalikunda, HPF, Kanthal, and Fingerpost.

The mesmerizing spectacle extended to the extent that up to an inch of ice delicately blanketed parked vehicles, presenting a picturesque yet challenging scene for residents attempting to start their cars. The icy conditions led to complaints from locals grappling with difficulties igniting their vehicles.

Local meteorological (MeT) authorities highlighted substantial fluctuations in day and night temperatures over the past few weeks, with daytime temperatures consistently reaching above 25 degrees Celsius. This climatic variance likely contributed to the formation of the exquisite white frost, transforming the Nilgiris district into a wondrous winter wonderland.

</excerpt>

China’s capital Beijng is experiencing extreme winters. The capital city has marked the record of facing the most prolonged cold wave since 1951. The temperature finally rose above zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) on Sunday afternoon at the Beijing’s Nanjiao weather station after many days, as reported by the Chinese local media, Beijing Daily.

“Since the temperature first dropped to below zero degrees on December 11, the temperature had remained below that line for more than 300 hours,” Beijing Daily wrote. CNN reported that most of the China was covered in a blanket of cold wave that pushed the heat capacity of some cities in northern China to its limit in the month of December.

After the intense cold wave, Henan, a province in central China experienced various system failures. In Jiaozuo City, heating was temporarily disrupted due to a malfunction at the Wanfang power plant on Friday. Fortunately, the issue was resolved on Saturday, and heating is set to resume on Sunday night, as reported by the official city newspaper, Jiaozuo Daily.

On the other hand, Puyang and Pingdingshan (cities in province) have reduced heating in the majority of government buildings and state-owned enterprises since Friday. This decision aims to prioritize the limited heating resources for hospitals, schools, and residential buildings, as stated by the governments of the two cities. The persistent cold weather in Beijing, which began days ago, has also led to problems with the city’s metro system, as reported by CNN.

The city’s transportation authority informed that due to heavy snowfall, two trains collided on a metro line resulting in injuring hundreds of commuters. Dozens of people with fractured bones were rushed to the hospital in Beijing earlier this month. Additionally, the freezing temperatures also hampered rescue efforts as a deadly earthquake occurred this month in northwest Gansu province of China.

The thick fog prompted motorists to exercise caution, slowing down their vehicles and using lights for safe navigation. Despite the cold, the locals found delight in this transformation. Many embraced the foggy weather, relishing their morning strolls in the fresh air after a period of smog.

With the conclusion of November’s rainy spell, the advent of December brought along a veil of fog, pleasantly surprising residents during their early morning walks. The fog-laden ambiance created a snug setting for those enjoying their walks or sipping hot tea at local tea stalls.

Residents welcomed the fog as a respite from the prior smoggy conditions that had made breathing challenging. They expressed contentment in breathing fresh air during their morning routines, finding solace in the warmth of hot tea to combat the intensifying cold.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) held a virtual media briefing, addressed by Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, forecasting the above-normal minimum and maximum temperatures for December 2023 across the country. The IMD stated that minimum temperatures are expected to be higher in most regions, while maximum temperatures are expected to exceed normal levels across the country, with the exception of certain areas in central and northern India.

IMD further noted that during the forthcoming winter season (December 2023 to February 2024), above-normal minimum temperatures are expected across most parts of the country. Additionally, above-normal maximum temperatures are projected for many regions, except certain areas in central and northwest India.

Regarding cold waves, IMD forecasted below-normal occurrences over the country’s north, northwest, central, east, and northeast during the winter season of December 2023 to February 2024.

</excerpt>

In response to an increase in respiratory illnesses, particularly pneumonia cases, among children in Northern China, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced on Thursday that experts would conduct tests to identify the circulating pathogen and determine whether it warrants special attention.

The diagnostic method, known as multiplex PCR, involves the simultaneous amplification of different DNA sequences. This test will be performed on samples obtained from Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Hospital and Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya.

Expressing concern over the situation, Bharadwaj issued directives to the state health department to ensure an ample supply of anti-viral drugs specifically for children in the city. Additionally, he mandated COVID-like preparedness in the pediatric departments of city hospitals.

To address public concerns, Bharadwaj emphasized that a basic advisory would be issued to prevent unnecessary panic. He highlighted the expected rise in seasonal health issues such as cough, cold, and influenza as temperatures decrease, particularly in the upcoming month of January.

In a collaborative effort with experts from government hospitals, including pulmonologists and pediatric pulmonologists, Bharadwaj stated that, as of now, there is no unidentified pathogen in circulation. He underscored that during this season, various bacterial and viral pathogens are commonly observed among patients.

Concerns about respiratory illnesses have escalated, prompting the Union Health Ministry to conduct a comprehensive review of preparedness measures. Advisories have been issued to all states and union territories, urging an immediate review of public health and hospital preparedness. This includes assessing the availability of human resources, hospital beds, influenza drugs and vaccines, medical oxygen, antibiotics, personal protective equipment, testing kits, reagents, the functionality of oxygen plants and ventilators, and infection control practices in health facilities. The Union Health Secretary’s letter stresses the importance of senior-level attention to these measures in light of the situation in China.

Already reeling under a cold wave since the beginning of the new year in Northwest India, including Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana, the India Meteorological Department issued orange and yellow alerts on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the orange alert means to “be prepared” to respond to any emergency and the yellow alert signifies that the weather could change.

Moreover, homeless people in the national capital are complaining about not getting much help from authorities.

“We are laborers. We feel cold every time, at work and while we are at home as we cannot afford a blanket and are making this survival possible with the help of fire. We came from Bihar to make both ends meet but sometimes it turns difficult as we have no support from the government or anybody,” said one Fasekhtar Alam.

Talking to the media, an auto rickshaw driver named Rajiv Kumar said, if they did not run their rickshaw despite their hands being numb due to the cold, they would die of starvation in a couple of days.

“The cold is so severe that we are not even able to move our vehicle, it gets really tough to hold the clutch. But we are compelled because if we don’t do this, we will die in two days,” Rajiv Kumar said.

Earlier on Wednesday, due to low visibility, several flights and six trains were running late.

Barauni-New Delhi Clone Special, Kamakhya-Delhi Brahmaputra Mail, Visakhapatnam-New Delhi Andhra Pradesh Express, Sultanpur -Anand Vihar Terminal Sadbhavana Express, Jabalpur-Hazrat Nizamuddin Gondwana, Manikpur-Hazrat Nizamuddin Uttar Pardesh Sampark Kranti Express, are running late upto 1 hour, as per the Northern Railway.

The airport authority said on Wednesday that several flights scheduled to depart from Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) were delayed due to fog.

However, between 18 January and 19 January, some parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana, as well as Chandigarh and Delhi, will experience a cold wave or severe cold wave conditions.

“Cold wave conditions over northwest India likely to abate from January 19. The rainfall/thunderstorm is likely to commence from January 22 and continue till January 25 with peak activity on 23 and 24 January over the plains of Northwest India including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and North Rajasthan,” the IMD said.

A senior scientist of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), RK Jenamani, said on Monday that Delhi will experience severe cold wave conditions for two days.

“The minimum temperature in Delhi has dipped to 1.4 degrees Celsius, with severe cold wave conditions prevailing in Delhi. For the next two days, the same temperature may prevail as the chances of further dipping are unlikely. The temperature may likely go up from January 18,” RK Jenamani said.

The main meteorological station in Delhi, the Safdarjung observatory, recorded a minimum temperature of four degrees Celsius on Friday, compared to three degrees on Thursday, 4.4 degrees on Wednesday, and 8.5 degrees on Tuesday.

As Uttar Pradesh battles a cold wave, at least 25 people passed away from heart attacks and brain strokes on January 5 in the state. It is predicted that Uttar Pradesh will see chilly waves to extremely cold days with dense to very dense fog until January 7, 2023.

In numerous locations throughout Rajasthan, “ground frosting conditions” were predicted by the weather forecast over the ensuing 24 hours. While Churu and Sikar continue to record below-freezing minimum temperatures, a “orange alert” was issued in numerous districts, including Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur, Jhunjhunu, and Karauli. Due to the extreme cold, numerous districts have decided to close their schools until January 15.

For Punjab and Haryana, cold wave conditions will prevail in many places during the next 24 hours while in other parts, cold to severe cold day weather is likely over the next two days. News agency ANI spoke to the common people in Bathinda which recorded a low of 3 degrees Celsius yesterday.

The meteorological office has also forecast that the Jammu division would continue to experience extreme cold wave conditions for the next 24 hours.
