CM Stalin Criticizes Hindi Month Celebration at Doordarshan Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin criticized the Hindi Month celebration at Doordarshan Chennai, which sparked political controversy on Friday. Stalin expressed strong discontent with the event and later took aim at Governor RN Ravi after performers at the function missed a reference to ‘Dravida’ in Tamil Nadu’s state anthem.

Stalin’s Condemnation of Hindi Month Event

In a post on X, Stalin voiced his objection to the celebration, stating, “I strongly condemn the celebration of Hindi month valedictory function along with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Chennai Doordarshan.” He argued that the Indian Constitution does not grant national language status to any language, highlighting that India is a multilingual nation. According to Stalin, celebrating Hindi Month in non-Hindi-speaking states could be seen as an effort to undermine other regional languages.

Stalin further suggested that instead of holding Hindi-oriented events, states should be encouraged to celebrate their local language months. He even wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the avoidance of Hindi language programs in non-Hindi-speaking states, reiterating that Hindi and English are designated only for official purposes, not as a national language.

Missing Dravidian Reference in State Anthem Sparks Outrage

Later in the day, controversy escalated when performers omitted a line from Tamil Nadu’s state anthem, specifically the reference to “Dravida,” which translates to “the great Dravidian nation.” Stalin accused Governor Ravi, who was present at the event, of deliberately disrespecting Tamil Nadu and its people’s sentiments. He called the omission a “deliberate insult” and demanded that the central government immediately “recall” the governor.

Stalin further criticized the omission, asking, “Will the governor, suffering from Dravidian allergy, ask the people to sing the national anthem leaving out Dravida?”

Doordarshan Issues Apology

In response, Doordarshan Chennai apologized for the mistake, explaining that the omission was accidental due to a distraction. They clarified that there was no intention to disrespect Tamil or the state anthem.

Political Reactions and Protests

The omission drew sharp criticism from various political figures, including AIADMK leader and Leader of the Opposition, Edappadi K Palaniswami, who termed it a “blunder.”

The incident also led to protests by members of the DMK’s youth wing outside the Doordarshan Chennai office, as tensions continued to rise over the perceived imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu.

Governor Ravi’s Response

Governor RN Ravi responded to Stalin’s remarks, calling them “regrettable” and accusing the chief minister of making a “racist remark” against him. Ravi emphasized his commitment to spreading Tamil across other states, pointing out his recent efforts to establish a Tamil diploma course at Gauhati University in Assam.

Ravi also criticized the chief minister for making baseless allegations, saying, “Making racist remarks and alleging incorrect imputations against the governor is unfortunately cheap and lowers the dignity of the high constitutional office of the chief minister.”

The Raj Bhavan issued a statement clarifying that the governor had no role in the omission of the line during the anthem performance, stating that he merely participated in the program.

DMK’s Longstanding Concerns on Language Imposition

This controversy is part of a broader issue, as the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has repeatedly accused the central government and Governor Ravi of attempting to impose Hindi at the expense of regional languages. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his gratitude to Union Minister Piyush Goyal for imposing a ban on the import of parts for pocket cigarette lighters, calling it a crucial step towards protecting jobs in the matchbox industry and reducing plastic waste.

In a post on X, CM Stalin said, “Thank you, Hon’ble @PiyushGoyal, for fully accepting my demands by banning single-use plastic cigarette lighters under Rs20 and now restricting the import of parts for cigarette lighters. This welcome move strengthens Tamil Nadu’s matchbox manufacturers, safeguarding over a lakh jobs and reducing harmful plastic waste.”

On October 13, the Department of Commerce imposed restrictions on importing parts for pocket lighters. According to a notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), “Import of parts of pocket lighters, gas fuelled, non-refillable or refillable lighters (cigarette lighters) is restricted with immediate effect.”

In another post, CM Stalin shared a letter he had sent to Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, urging him to take action against the import of cigarette lighters. “The matchbox manufacturing industry is a major source of employment in the southern part of Tamil Nadu. It is a traditional industry that employs over a lakh people directly,” the letter stated.

“The industry is going through a difficult phase currently. It is facing stiff challenges from Pakistan and Indonesia in the export markets. The supply chain disruptions following the COVID pandemic have increased the cost and logistic difficulties associated with exports,” the letter added.

In his letter, CM Stalin also urged the Union Minister to implement strict measures against the import of lighters from Pakistan and Indonesia. “I, therefore, urge your urgent intervention in this matter and I request you to immediately ban the import of such single-use plastic cigarette lighters and also to take stringent action against illegal imports,” the letter concluded.

CM Stalin Meets PM Modi; Seeks Release of Central Funds and Chennai Metro Approval

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and submitted a memorandum requesting the release of central funds under the Samagara Siksha Scheme and approval for the Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase-II on a 50:50 equity sharing basis between the state and central governments.

Focus on Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase-II

CM Stalin emphasized the need for a joint effort between the Union and State governments to implement the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, similar to the first phase. He noted that the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced funding for this project in the 2021-22 budget, and approval was granted in 2022. However, he highlighted that the project has incurred expenses amounting to ₹18,564 crore but is currently facing delays due to pending approval from the Union Government. Request for Release of Funds Under the Samagara Siksha Scheme

In a devastating incident in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district, at least 25 people have lost their lives and over 60 others have been hospitalized after allegedly consuming illicit liquor on Wednesday. The death toll is feared to rise as the situation unfolds, prompting swift government action and expressions of shock and grief from officials.

Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing immediate measures against those responsible. He assured the public of stringent actions against the perpetrators and officials found negligent in preventing the incident. Arrests have already been made, including that of K Kannukutti, who was found in possession of about 200 liters of illegal liquor containing deadly methanol.

In response to this illicit liquor crisis, MK Stalin has ordered a comprehensive investigation by the Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID) to ensure a thorough probe into the incident. As part of administrative measures, the district collector Sravan Kumar Jatavath has been replaced, and the superintendent of police Samay Singh Meena has been suspended. Nine other police officers, including those from the Kallakurichi prohibition wing, have also faced suspension.

TN govt. attracts investments of Over ₹40,000 Crore creating nearly 20,000 jobs

Global Investors Meet 2024, the Tamil Nadu administration entered into Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with a total of 11 campanies.

The notable declarations from various companies including VinFast Auto, JSW Renewables, TVS Group, First Solar, Pegatron, Godrej Consumer Products, Qualcomm and Mitsubishi. These announcements are anticipated to create nearly 20,000 employment opportunities within the state.

Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast Auto has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government. Expanding the list of significant investments, VinFast has declared the establishment of an electric vehicle manufacturing unit in Tuticorin, TN. With an investment of $2 billion (approximately ₹16,000 crore), VinFast aims to contribute to the growth of Tuticorin. This venture is projected to generate more than 3,000 local job opportunities within Tamil Nadu.

Additionally, Hyundai, a significant participant in the automotive industry, announced a further capital infusion of ₹6,180 crore in Tamil Nadu. Qualcomm, a renowned global frontrunner in wireless technology, disclosed its investment amounting to ₹177 crore, which is projected to create 1,600 employment opportunities.

First Solar has declared its plan to build a solar module plant for photovoltaic (PV) solar in Kanchipuram. The company intends to invest ₹2,500 crore in this endeavor, resulting in the creation of 350 job opportunities.

Godrej Consumer Products Ltd has revealed its intentions to establish an integrated manufacturing unit in Chengalpattu, with an investment of ₹515 crore. This project is expected to generate 446 employment opportunities.

Pegatron, a prominent manufacturer of consumer electronics, has announced its entry into Tamil Nadu with a substantial investment of ₹1,000 crore. This venture is set to create an astounding 8,000 jobs.

JSW Renewables has demonstrated its dedication to sustainable energy by announcing its investments in various renewable energy projects throughout Tamil Nadu. The conglomerate intends to allocate ₹12,000 crore towards these initiatives, resulting in the creation of 6,000 job opportunities.

In a similar vein, the TVS Group has unveiled its plans to invest ₹5,000 crore in multiple projects across Tamil Nadu, with an estimated employment of 500 individuals.

The Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet (GIM), a significant event initiated by the government, commenced on January 7 at the Chennai Trade Centre. This edition of the event will witness the participation of over 30 nations, including 9 partner countries.

The Tamil Nadu government has published a report outlining its strategy to propel the state towards a $1 trillion economy by 2030. This ambitious goal has been a prominent focus for the Stalin government since May 2021. Although Tamil Nadu has previously organized two editions of the Global Investors Meet (GIM) in 2015 and 2019, this upcoming event will mark the first under the leadership of M.K. Stalin.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin officially opened the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus in Chennai, named in honor of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, during a ceremony on Saturday. Stalin took a moment to pay homage to the late Chief Minister, affectionately known as ‘Kalaignar’ (scholar of arts) for his significant literary contributions.

The inauguration of the bus terminus is part of the centenary celebrations commemorating the birth of the former Chief Minister, who also served as the leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). In September, Stalin announced the commencement of a quiz competition on September 15 as another facet of the centenary birthday festivities. The competition, organized by the DMK women’s team under the leadership of DMK Deputy General Secretary Kanimozhi, was introduced to honor Karunanidhi’s legacy.

Furthermore, the DMK arranged the Karunanidhi Memorial International Marathon in August as part of the centenary celebrations. This marathon achieved recognition as Asia’s largest such event and secured a place in the Guinness World Records. A remarkable 73,206 participants took part, surpassing the previous record of 39,000 participants. TN CM Stalin launches flood relief of Rs 6 000 to impacted families

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M K Stalin, started distributing Rs 6,000 in cash assistance on Sunday to families impacted by the rains and flooding caused by Cyclone Michaung. The first flood relief distribution to residents of Chennai and the surrounding areas falling under the districts of Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur was marked by Stalin’s giving away of the cash dole to women heads of families at Velachery, one of the severely affected areas due to tremendous flooding.

Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, requesting an immediate interim relief fund of Rs 5060 crores, in the midst of the devastation caused by Cyclone Michaung in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, CM Stalin asked the PM to dispatch a central team to assess the harm the state’s Cyclone had caused. DMK MP TR Baalu will deliver the letter to PM Modi personally in Delhi. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu also visited the areas devastated by the cyclone on Wednesday morning. CM Stalin wrote on X late on Tuesday, stating that every government apparatus has been putting forth great effort to undo the damage caused by Cyclone Michaung.

“The entire government machinery, such as ministers, officials, police, sanitation workers, and corporation workers are working hard to quickly remove the effects of the Cyclone Michaung calamity that surrounds us. I request that many more comrades should immediately join hands with the relief work along with the members of the club who are helping in the field. Members of the affected areas come quickly!” CM Stalin said on X.

The India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday that Cyclone Michaung has weakened and is now a deep depression over central coastal Andhra Pradesh.

“Cyclonic Storm “MICHAUNG” weakened into a Deep Depression over Central Coastal AP. About 100 km north-northwest of Bapatla and 50 km southeast of Khammam. To weaken further into a Depression in next 06 hours and further into a WML during subsequent 06 hours,” the IMD said.

Tamil Nadu: CM Stalin to launch a massive income-support scheme for women today

MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, will introduce the “Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam” program for women on Friday. One of the key election promises made by the ruling DMK will be fulfilled with the launch of the program. The plan would also represent a complete fulfillment of the party’s promises to the populace, according to party officials. Women from low-income households will receive monthly financial assistance in the amount of Rs 1,000 under the welfare program.

CM Stalin, who is also the DMK president, will launch the scheme from Kancheepuram, the birthplace of the party’s icon and former chief minister CN Annadurai.
The launch of this welfare scheme has been timed to coincide with the birth anniversary of the late Dravidian icon.
The state minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Udhayanidhi Stalin, who recently courted controversy with his remarks against ‘Sanatan Dharma’, will launch the scheme in Chennai.

Similar to this, different launch events in the state will be led by ministers Sekar Babu and Ma Subramanian, among others. According to a statement from the state government, this direct cash transfer program can benefit up to 1,605 crore women. The government will also give eligible women who feel left out time to sign up for the program. Through the e-Seva portal, they can submit a request to enlist. Their requests would be handled within 30 days, according to a government announcement. The targeted beneficiaries’ bank accounts will receive the promised amount directly.

Tamil Nadu : CM Stalin launches second phase of breakfast scheme in govt schools

MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, on Friday began the second phase of the “CM’s Breakfast” program in state government schools. In order to kick off the program in the Nagapattinam district, CM Stalin shared a meal and some chocolates with some students from the Panchayat Union Middle School in Thirukkuvalai.

“I believe today is the best day and am so proud to introduce this breakfast scheme here. Late Karunanidhi (former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu) has introduced and benefitted Thirukkuvalai with a lot of good schemes. As Karunanidhi’s son, I am very proud to initiate this scheme here,” Stalin said while addressing the function.
He said that this scheme aims to reduce hunger, and added that hunger should not be a barrier to education.
“There is nothing more important than education and no one can take it away from us, so students should concentrate on studies. No one should miss education because of hunger that is why our government has allotted funds for this scheme. The government has invested funds to improve the knowledge and create motivation for the students, this investment will definitely be beneficial to the country,” CM said.

The Chief Minister also urged the officers and those in charge of food preparation to treat the students with the same level of respect as their own children. “There are cunning rulers who erect barriers to education in the name of national education policy and in the name of NEET. I humbly request that you treat the students here as you would treat your own children at home, officers and cooks, he said. In addition, Stalin stated that he would introduce a program for women’s rights the following week, in honor of the birth anniversary of the former chief minister Annadurai. The program aims to give them financial support.

Tamil Nadu CM Stalin : “Education should be moved to State list”

MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, stated on Tuesday that education must be moved from the Concurrent list to the State list in order for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examination to be abolished.

In a remark that assumes significance in light of the death of a NEET examinee after failing to clear the exam for a second time, the CM said, “Education should be moved to the State List, as this is the only way NEET could be abolished. Tamil Nadu is contributing to various sectors such as Education. Medicine, economy, agriculture, human resource, and export, among others,” he added.

Earlier Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin criticised the central government following the death of a father and son over the latter’s failure to clear the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), saying that the state will fight against the exams “legally”.

He continued by saying that NEET not only killed children but now even their parents. He continued by saying that the Centre needed to comprehend the mental health of Tamil Nadu students and their families. He also claimed that the Governor had neglected his responsibility to revoke NEET twice in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by shelving and returning it.

Tamil Nadu CM Stalin says NEET can be removed after increasing suicide rates

On Monday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin assured that NEET can be done away with amid the rising number of cases of suicides by students. He also requested the students to avoid suicidal thoughts.

In a statement, CM MK Stalin said, “Have confidence, do not have suicidal thoughts. Do not think of losing your life in any situation. Definitely, we can remove NEET which proves to be an obstacle to your goals. The Tamil Nadu government is working vigorously towards that.”

His statement came after a NEET aspirant committed suicide in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai after he was unable to clear the NEET exam two times in a row on Sunday. Just a day later his father also died by suicide on Monday.

He further added, “I was shocked after knowing that Jegadeeswaran from Chrompet, who was a NEET aspirant, committed suicide. When I was thinking about how to console the student’s parents, the next day, his father Selvasekar also died by suicide. I do not know how to console the Jegadeeswaran family, friends and relatives.”

“Condolences to the death of S Jegadeeswaran and his father Selvasekar,” he added.
