Kerala Muslims Oppose Zumba in Schools, Calls It ‘Against Moral Values’

Muslim communities in Kerala have reacted strongly to the proposal to introduce Zumba classes in schools, terming the move as against moral and cultural values. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the fitness classes to reduce student stress and curb rising drug abuse among youngsters.

Some Muslim organisations and leaders have opposed the move. They say the dance promotes vulgarity, violates student rights, and lacks proper educational consultation. The state education department has firmly defended the programme, calling it a step towards students physical and mental well-being.

Religious Leaders Raise Cultural Concerns

Abdussamad Pookkottur, the state secretary of Samastha Kerala Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS), openly condemned Zumba in a Facebook post. He averred that Zumba “gainsays moral values.” TK Ashraf, general secretary of the Wisdom Islamic Organisation, was in line with this opinion. He averred that schools should provide academic excellence, not dance-based classes where children wear minimal clothing.

TK Ashraf also assured that he would neither let his son join nor conduct the programme as a teacher. He accepted the fact that a few may call it an old-school approach but remained resolute in his stance.

‘Don’t Force Vulgarity on Students’

Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama leader Nassar Faizy Koodathai said further that such Zumba activities require little attire and cannot be imposed on students. He alleged that it was an infringement on the fundamental rights of students who do not want to display such open shows.

The Muslim Students’ Federation (MSF), which is associated with the Indian Union Muslim League, raised a doubt about the absence of formal consultations. MSF state president P K Navas wondered if the education department had carried out any studies or engaged in discussions with the stakeholders prior to the implementation.

Kerala Government Defends Mental Health Initiative

Despite the criticism, the education department in Kerala remained firm in its decision. It clarified that the move is part of the “With Childhood and Youth” anti-drug abuse campaign. According to the department, children who have mental issues are prone to falling into the drug syndicates.

Kerala Higher Education Minister R Bindhu urged critics to adapt to modern realities. “We are in 2025, not in the 19th century or medieval times,” she said. The state believes Zumba offers children a safe, positive outlet for their energy and emotions.

Kerala CM Directs CBI Probe into Veterinary Student’s Death

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has instructed a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the death of J S Sidharthan, a second-year veterinary student, following a meeting with his family.

Opposition parties and the student’s father had accused the Student Federation of India (SFI) for his death. Sidharthan, enrolled at Government Veterinary College, Pookkode, was found hanging in his hostel room on February 18. Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan suspended Vice Chancellor Dr MR Saseendranath in connection with the incident.

Sidharthan’s father alleged that his son’s death appeared to be a “murder sponsored by the leaders and workers of the SFI.” He claimed it was a “well-planned murder” and cited “brutal ragging” as a regular occurrence at the college.

Sidharthan’s relatives contended that he was brutally assaulted by a group of students on campus, asserting it was a case of murder and not suicide. Kerala Police had apprehended six individuals in relation to the student’s demise.

With the government’s decision for a CBI probe, opposition protests ceased, including demonstrations by Mahila Congress president Jebi Mather, Youth Congress president Rahul Mamkootathil, and KSU state President Aloshious Xavier.

Pulpally: 2 people arrested for attacking forest department vehicle

Police have arrested two people in connection with the Pulpally violence episodes for attacking a forest department vehicle.
The arrest occurred after three consecutive deaths caused by wild elephant attacks spurred protests in Kerala’s Wayanad on Saturday, with prohibitory orders imposed on the Pulpally district for two days.

“Police are checking the CCTV footage of the area and two more people involved in the violence will be arrested soon,” Pulpally Police.

Meanwhile, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan paid a visit to Ajeesh’s family on Monday, after he was killed by a wild elephant.

Earlier on Sunday, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi visited the home of Forest Department watcher VP Paul, who was trampled to death by a wild elephant near Wayanad.

The Congress MP talked with the victim’s relatives and expressed his sympathies. On Saturday, there was a big demonstration in Pakkam, near Pulpally in Wayanad district, following the tragedy.

Gandhi also wrote a letter to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, pleading with him to take decisive action in the case.

According to Kerala Forest Minister AK Saseendran, the victim was attacked after the elephant entered a residential area near Mananthavady.

Following the event, the Kerala government issued a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and promised a job to one of the deceased’s family members.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asked officials on Saturday to convene a high-level meeting to tackle the issues surrounding wildlife assaults in Wayanad.

According to Kerala’s chief minister, a meeting would be convened in Wayanad on February 20. The meeting will be attended by ministers from the Revenue, Forest, and Local Self-Government Departments. Delhi CM Kejriwal, Punjab CM Mann to Join Kerala’s ‘Historic Protest’ Against Centre

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, as well as Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, will attend Kerala’s anti-Centre rally in Delhi on Thursday, led by CM Pinarayi Vijayan.
The major agitation will take place in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in protest of the Centre’s claimed discrimination against Kerala.
The demonstration will include state ministers, legislators, and parliamentarians. DMK Minister P Thiaga Rajan will represent the DMK after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin approved Vijayan’s demonstrations.

LDF convenor EP Jayarajan asserted that they are raising people’s demands through the mega agitation.

“We are raising the people’s demands. Yesterday it was Karnataka, today it is Kerala, tomorrow other states will also come,” Jayarajan said.
Speaking on the protest, Kerala MLA K K Shailaja said, “Without getting proper tax share and funds from Central government, the state cannot sustain. They are not allowing us to borrow money also. Central govt is implementing some rules, especially for Kerala lowering the borrowing limit.”
“Karnataka CM yesterday expressed his solidarity with us,” she added.
Announcing the protest earlier through a press conference on Wednesday, CM Vijayan said, “We have had to resort to such an unprecedented struggle, as it is essential for Kerala’s survival and advancement.”

According to Vijayan, the agitation is not just designed to protect Kerala’s constitutional rights, but also those of all states.

“This agitation is intended to safeguard the constitutional rights of all states, not merely Kerala’s. The aim of this struggle is not to triumph over anyone, but to secure what we rightfully deserve instead of surrendering. We believe that the entire country will stand with Kerala in support of this protest,” the Chief Minister said.

The Kerala Chief Minister alleged that the national government prioritizes states led by the Bharatiya Janata Party or the National Democratic Alliance.

“The BJP governs independently or in coalition with other parties in 17 states. The Central Government appears to solely favour these 17 states, while neglecting those not aligned with the NDA,” Vijayan said.

The Chief Minister claimed that it is unconstitutional for the central government to set the borrowing limits of the states.

“The central government has no constitutional authority to determine the borrowing limits of the states. These measures, deemed unconstitutional and contrary to the recommendations of the Finance Commission, have been implemented through the exercise of powers lacking legal standing,” he said.

Kerala to study population sample to find cause of repeated Nipah outbreaks

Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, has announced that the state will initiate a seroprevalence investigation regarding the recurring occurrences of the Nipah virus in the Kozhikode district.

As per the World Health Organization (WHO), these population-based seroprevalence surveys are essential for estimating the infection rate and immunity levels within a community, which aids in understanding the disease’s impact, transmission patterns, and associated risk factors.

The Chief Minister expressed concerns about the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) not providing a clear explanation for the persistent Nipah virus outbreaks in Kozhikode.

“So the state has decided to conduct a sero survey. Have asked the health department to prepare a detailed proposal for this,” CM Vijayan said in a media briefing in Thiruvananthapuram.

“It cannot be said that the Nipah threat has gone away. It is a relief that the disease has not spread to more people. The government is going ahead with effective measures to prevent the spread and ensure better treatment for those infected. The entire health system of the state is involved in this initiative with utmost caution,” he further added.

“A more dangerous situation was avoided because it was detected early. As soon as the abnormal fever was noticed, the government intervened and coordinated preventive measures,” the CM continued.

He also revealed that a Nipah action plan was drawn up and a Nipah Core Committee comprising 19 teams was formed.

Speaking at the opening of the EK Nayanar Indoor Stadium, Concert Metastadium, and Clock Room Complex in Muzhapilangad Village Panchayat constructed through the Chief Minister’s Asset Development Fund who is also a Dharmadam MLA.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said, “A better sports culture requires better sports literacy. Sports culture can be formed by providing basic sports education to people irrespective of urban and rural areas.”
The Chief Minister said that the government had formulated a sports policy with an emphasis on the concept of health for all.
He said, “To achieve this goal, basic sports facilities should be developed. 1500 crore projects will be implemented for this. As a part of this, a sports council has been formed at the local self-government level.”

According to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, promoting sports literacy is a difficult task that needs the help of athletes, coaches, the media, and everyone else. The event was presided over by Dr. V Sivadasan, MP. The Chief Minister honored Mithun, a local resident and captain of the Santosh Trophy football team. The report was presented by KK Dilip Kumar, Assistant Executive Engineer for Thalassery Block Panchayat. An amount of Rs 1.26 crore from the MLA Asset Development Fund for the years 2017–18, 2018–19, and 2019–20 was used to build the indoor stadium. Here, there were three shuttle courts, a volleyball court, 250-seat galleries, restrooms, electricity, and a water system.
