</excerpt>

As the Centre announced a mega-bonanza for Bihar in the Union Budget 2024, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar hailed the move, saying he has been lobbying for either special category status for the state or financial assistance.

I have continually advocated for this, and I informed them as well. “I told them to give us either a special status or a special package,” Kumar remarked.

“As a follow-up, they have announced aid for a lot of things… We were speaking of special status and a lot of people said that the provision for special status has been done away with much earlier. So, instead of that, they have now announced aid to help Bihar,” he added.

“They have started giving aid to assist Bihar,” he stated.

The opposition has attacked the Nitish Kumar administration over its quest for special status. On Monday, the Centre firmly refused to fulfill the requirement.

Before the presentation of Union Budget, Kumar stated, “Sab kuch dhire dhire jaan jaiyega.”

In the Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman pledged a Rs 26,000 crore boost for Bihar’s roads and highways. She also announced the construction of two new highways in the state, as well as the establishment of many airports, medical institutes, and sports facilities.

</excerpt>

In a significant move, the Janata Dal (United) has appointed Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha as the party’s working president. The decision was made during the JD(U)’s national executive meeting, where it was also confirmed that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar would continue to serve as the national president of the party.

Sanjay Jha’s appointment is seen as a strategic choice due to his strong rapport with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership. Jha, who also leads the party in the Rajya Sabha, is expected to play a crucial role in fostering a cooperative relationship with the BJP, despite past tensions between the two parties. Party insiders believe Jha’s position will be instrumental in securing favorable agreements from the BJP, ensuring smooth collaboration between the coalition partners. During the executive meeting, JD(U) emphasized the need for strict measures against those involved in exam paper leaks and urged the enactment of stringent laws to prevent such incidents in the future.

A notable resolution passed at the meeting called for Bihar to be granted special category status or a special financial package from the central government. This demand reflects the party’s ongoing efforts to secure more resources and support for Bihar’s development.

Key figures at the meeting included Bihar CM and JD(U) President Nitish Kumar, Union ministers Lalan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur, along with other senior leaders from across the country. The gathering took place in Delhi, highlighting the party’s national influence and agenda. Nitish Kumar’s political journey has seen him re-align with the NDA, taking oath as Bihar’s Chief Minister with BJP’s backing after briefly joining the Rashtriya Janata Dal-led ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in August 2022. The JD(U) contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the BJP, a partnership that proved successful as the BJP-led NDA secured 29 out of 40 seats in Bihar. Both BJP and JD(U) won 12 seats each, while the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) claimed all five seats it contested. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress managed to secure four and three seats, respectively.

</excerpt>

The BJP concluded this Lok Sabha election with 240 seats, notably fewer than its desired 370 and a considerable decrease from the 303 seats it secured in 2019. While it still maintains enough seats, aided by its NDA allies’ 53, to form the government for a third term, the outcome could have been different had Mayawati aligned her BSP with the INDIA bloc.

A significant portion of the BJP’s lost seats originated from Uttar Pradesh, a state it has historically dominated since the ‘Modi wave’ of 2014. In 2019, the party clinched 62 seats and nearly 50% of the votes, while its ally, the Apna Dal (Sonelal), contributed two more seats. However, in this election, the BJP secured only 33 seats, with its vote share dropping to 41.3%.

Mayawati Factor In UP Lok Sabha Election

The BSP contested 79 seats and finished with 9.4 per cent of the votes, but won zero seats.

The kicker, though, is that in 16 seats – all won by the BJP or an ally- the ex-Chief Minister’s party, finished with more votes than the winning margin. If she had been part of the opposition – and sources said she was courted – votes may have shifted and the BJP’s score could have fallen, maybe, by all 16.

The 16 contested seats include Akbarpur, Aligarh, Amroha, Bansgaon, Bhadohi, Bijnor, Deoria, Farrukhabad, Fatepur Sikri, Hardoi, Meerut, Mirzapur, Misrikh, Phulpur, Shahjahanpur, and Unnao.

Among these, the BJP secured victory in 14 seats, while the ADS claimed victory in two.

In instances such as Bansgaon, Farrukhabad, and Phulpur, the winning margins were less than 5,000 votes, while the unsuccessful BSP candidates garnered over 64,000, 45,000, and 82 votes, respectively.

For example, in Meerut, the BJP candidate won by a margin of 10,585 votes, while the BSP received 87,025 votes.

In Bhadohi, where a Trinamool candidate supported by the SP was on the ballot, the BJP won by a margin of 44,000 votes, with the BSP candidate receiving over 1.55 lakh votes.

Had these seats been lost by the BJP, it would have been left with 224 seats, and the NDA led by the party, perceived as supporting the incoming government, would have had only 277 seats, just five above the majority mark.

Mayawati + ‘Kingmakers’ + INDIA = BJP Defeat?

It would also have propelled the INDIA bloc to 248 – not enough to claim victory but enough to underline the ‘kingmaker’ role assigned to incoming Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party and the Janata Dal (United) of his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar.

The TDP won 16 seats and the JDU 12. Take those 28 away from the BJP coalition and 265 remains – not enough for Narendra Modi to be sworn in this weekend for a historic third straight term.

The BJP recognizes the significance of Mr. Naidu and Nitish Kumar, as evidenced by Narendra Modi’s special acknowledgment in his victory speech on Tuesday, as well as the initial plans for their presence alongside him during the formal submission of government formation to President Droupadi Murmu.

Originally, a delegation comprising key BJP figures – Mr. Modi, his close aide Amit Shah, and party leader JP Nadda – along with opposition leaders like Mr. Naidu and Nitish Kumar, was scheduled to visit Ms. Murmu at her residence in Delhi following an NDA meeting to assess the election outcome and discuss the way forward.

Although the meeting did not materialize, sources confirmed that the BJP has ensured, to the best of its ability, the support of these two influential figures by obtaining written letters of endorsement. Consequently, it is anticipated that Mr. Modi will be sworn in as Prime Minister over the weekend, marking his third term in office and making him only the second individual, after Jawaharlal Nehru, to hold this position thrice.

What INDIA Bloc Said

On Thursday, the opposition convened in Delhi amidst rumors that they might approach Mr. Naidu and Nitish Kumar to potentially sway 28 seats. While this move, as deliberated, may not suffice for the opposition to form a government themselves, it could significantly weaken the BJP’s position.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the opposition intends to “take necessary actions at the right moment to fulfill the people’s wish of not being governed by the BJP.”

Narendra Modi will be sworn in as Prime Minister for a historic third consecutive term, sources informed NDTV on Wednesday.

Narendra Modi was unanimously selected as the leader of the alliance this afternoon, and he was commended for his “leadership” and the “strides our nation has made under him.” The NDA partners expressed their appreciation for his dedication to nation-building and his vision for ‘Viksit Bharat,’ reaffirming their commitment to this goal. They also praised his role in enhancing India’s global status.

Earlier today, NDA leaders convened at Modi’s residence to review the election results and discuss the formation of the government. Following this, a delegation of senior BJP figures and NDA partners planned to meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan to claim power.

This delegation was set to include Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Chandrababu Naidu and Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar, whose combined 28 seats are crucial to maintaining the BJP’s coalition majority.

Naidu’s TDP won 16 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh (alongside a simultaneous Assembly election that saw his return as Chief Minister), and Kumar’s JDU secured 12 seats in Bihar.

There has been speculation that Naidu and Kumar might be approached by the opposition INDIA bloc, which finished with 232 seats (40 short of a majority) and is exploring a bid to form the government.

To counter this, the BJP has obtained written letters of support from both the TDP and JDU leaders.

Modi, aware of their significance to the NDA, specifically acknowledged Naidu and Kumar during his victory speech on Tuesday night at the party headquarters in Delhi.

As early as Tuesday evening, when it became apparent that the BJP would not form the government independently, sources indicated that Naidu and Kumar—seasoned leaders experienced in coalition politics—could be courted by Congress in an attempt to stake its own claim.

Although neither Naidu nor Kumar has publicly declared their intentions, sources have indicated that various demands, including special status for their states and key ministerial positions, are being negotiated.

On Tuesday, the INDIA bloc defied exit polls to pose a significant challenge to the BJP in a national election for the first time since the ‘Modi wave’ of 2014. The opposition alliance secured 232 seats, 40 short of the majority mark of 272.

INDIA leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, have remained discreet about reaching out to Naidu and Kumar, though the intent is reportedly there.

The Congress achieved its best performance since 2009, winning 99 seats. This is a notable improvement from 52 seats in 2019 (after which Rahul Gandhi resigned as president) and 44 seats in 2014.

Earlier, Modi met with President Murmu to resign in advance of the government’s dissolution on June 16. He was asked to continue in his role until a new government is formed.

On the same day, he chaired the final cabinet meeting of his second term and downplayed any concerns over the party’s performance, stating, “Winning and losing are part of politics… We have done good work for the last 10 years. We will continue doing so.”

Addressing a jubilant crowd at the party’s headquarters in Delhi on Tuesday night, Modi said the people of India had “placed their faith” in the NDA for a third time. “I bow to the people for this affection and assure them we will continue the good work done in the last decade to keep fulfilling aspirations.”

</excerpt>

Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) national president Nitish Kumar has reportedly declined the post of convenor of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc. Sources indicate that Kumar suggested that someone from the Congress should assume the responsibility of the post. This development occurred during a virtual meeting of INDIA bloc leaders, where the seat-sharing agenda, participation in Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, and other alliance-related matters were discussed.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar attended the meeting via video conferencing from Mumbai, while Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader MK Stalin and party leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi participated from Chennai. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was absent, attending a pre-scheduled state program.

In a previous meeting, Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav proposed Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge as the Prime Ministerial candidate.

The INDIA bloc, comprising various opposition parties, including the Congress, aims to challenge the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Parallel meetings are ongoing, with the Congress’ alliance committee taking the lead in consulting with various parties within the INDIA bloc for state-level alliances. A meeting between Congress and Aam Aadmi Party leaders took place on Friday, characterized as a positive move. The Congress alliance committee is set to meet with leaders from Jharkhand on Saturday to continue alliance-building efforts.

As India approaches the Lok Sabha elections, the political landscape is witnessing significant reshuffling, with the emerging INDIA consortium preparing to challenge the established National Democratic Alliance. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA secured 353 seats, the UPA stood at 91, and other parties won 98. The elections took place in seven phases between April 11 and May 19, with a voter turnout of around 67%.

</excerpt>

Janata Dal (United) leader Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) has refuted the reports circulating in certain sections of the media regarding his resignation as party chief.

He has described these reports as “untrue and misleading” and clarified that he voluntarily stepped down due to his busy schedule related to his constituency work. Lalan Singh emphasized that such reports are damaging to his reputation.

“The news was published prominently in a leading newspaper and some news channels showed that I had to resign in an attempt to make Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav the Chief Minister. A news item has also been published that on December 20, a meeting of a dozen MLAs was held in the office of a minister in which I was also present. The report has talked about a rift in JD-U. This news is completely misleading, untrue and tarnishes my image,” the statement said.

He expressed his disappointment that such false news was published to tarnish his image and questioned the integrity of his 37-year-long association with Nitish Kumar.

The JD (U) leader emphasized that his decision to step down was made with the consent of the Chief Minister, and Nitish Kumar took over the responsibility. He asserted that those who spread and publish such misleading news will face consequences.

Lalan Singh reaffirmed that the Janata Dal (U) remains united under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, who is widely accepted by the party. Furthermore, Lalan Singh announced his intention to send a legal notice regarding the dissemination of this misleading news and stated that he would file a defamation case.

Deliberations on seat-sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections are expected to be a key focus as the bloc prepares for its fourth meeting on Tuesday.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi, addressing the media on Tuesday, highlighted that crucial aspects, including seat-sharing, would likely be pivotal topics during the meeting. Atishi conveyed the commitment of the AAP and Arvind Kejriwal to contribute towards ensuring the success of the opposition alliance.

With the Lok Sabha polls just four months away, seat-sharing discussions are anticipated to dominate the agenda of the upcoming INDIA bloc meeting. The outcome of these discussions holds significant implications for the Congress, particularly following its electoral setbacks in the heartland states of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.

The opposition alliance, spearheaded by the Congress, was established with the primary goal of presenting a united front against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in the 2024 general elections. Previous meetings of the opposition bloc, held in Patna, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, have laid the groundwork for collaborative strategies, emphasizing the importance of collective participation in the electoral process. The Mumbai meeting also saw the adoption of resolutions to jointly contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with an emphasis on reaching seat-sharing agreements through a cooperative approach.

</excerpt>

BJP legislators intensified their protest against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, staging demonstrations both inside and outside the Assembly and demanding his resignation over controversial remarks on birth control. The uproar follows Kumar’s comments during a debate on caste census, where he suggested that girls’ education would prevent pregnancies resulting from sexual intercourse when they marry later in life.

The comment triggered opposition from BJP members and drew criticism from the National Women’s Commission (NCW), which called for an unconditional apology. In response to the backlash, Kumar retracted his remarks, stating, “I take back my remarks and do apologize to anyone who I may have offended by my remarks.”

Despite the apology, the opposition, particularly the BJP, continued to demand the resignation of the Bihar CM. Chaos ensued during the legislative council session, with opposition members raising slogans against Nitish Kumar and labeling him an “anti-Dalit and anti-women CM.”

Members of the ruling alliance staged a counter-protest and raised slogans over the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre allegedly not extending an invitation to President Droupadi Murmu to inaugurate the new Parliament building.

</excerpt>

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman sharply criticized Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his recent comments on population control, deeming them “shameful.” Sitharaman’s rebuke came during her visit to Bhopal, where she is actively participating in the campaign for the impending Madhya Pradesh assembly election scheduled for this month.

Expressing her dismay, Sitharaman pointed out the absence of strong condemnation from leaders of the INDIA bloc and Congress family regarding Kumar’s remarks. She underscored the disturbing mentality displayed by the alliance, emphasizing that women were being viewed primarily as a vote bank rather than as individuals with rights and dignity.

Kumar’s controversial statements were made during a debate on caste census in the Bihar Assembly, where he suggested that educating women would lead to a reduction in sexual intercourse and, consequently, control population growth.

Despite Kumar’s subsequent apology on Wednesday, Sitharaman stressed the importance of more robust condemnation from political leaders. She highlighted the need for a deeper understanding and respect for women’s autonomy and rights within the political discourse.

In contrast, Sitharaman commended the Madhya Pradesh government for its strides in healthcare and development. She cited a substantial increase in the number of medical colleges, growing from five to 30 over the past two decades. Additionally, medical seats surged from 620 to 4,000, contributing to improved healthcare infrastructure in the state.

Sitharaman also lauded the effectiveness of the Mukhyamantri Laldi Bahna Yojana, a scheme benefitting 1.32 crore women. These positive initiatives, according to Sitharaman, demonstrated the commitment of the Madhya Pradesh government to holistic development.

Madhya Pradesh is gearing up for polls on November 17, with voters set to elect legislators from 230 Assembly constituencies. The results of the election will be disclosed on December 3. The state remains a crucial battleground, with political leaders actively engaging in campaigning to secure support from the electorate.

The chaotic scenes in the Bihar Assembly during the Winter Session ensued as opposition members raised slogans against CM Nitish Kumar for his objectionable comments on birth control. Despite the BJP’s scathing attacks, Kumar apologized for his remarks, stating, “I apologize, and I take back my words.”

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sudhanshu Trivedi condemned Kumar’s statement, calling it “shameful, condemnable, and painful.” Trivedi highlighted the low mentality displayed by leaders in the India bloc regarding women.

Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav defended Nitish Kumar, asserting that the CM’s remarks were related to sex education, not population control. </excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched a strong attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his derogatory remarks against women in relation to population control and said crass words were uttered in the state assembly and there was “no shame”.

PM Modi condemned the derogatory words uttered in the assembly and expressed his concern over the opposition’s lack of response to the insult to mothers and sisters present during the session. He questioned the leaders of the opposition alliance, collectively known as the INDI alliance, asking if they could genuinely work for the welfare and respect of women.

PM Modi further stated that such remarks not only harm the reputation of individuals but also tarnish the country’s image. He emphasized his commitment to upholding the honour and respect of women, stating that he would continue to work toward that goal.

The controversy began when Nitish Kumar used derogatory language in the Bihar Assembly to explain the role of education and women in population control. His remarks triggered outrage, leading to an apology from the Bihar CM, who stated that he was taking back his words.

Nitish Kumar’s comments received widespread condemnation, including from the BJP and the National Commission for Women (NCW). Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, criticized the Bihar Chief Minister’s statements and called for an apology, suggesting that Nitish Kumar had lost his “mental stability.”

In defense of Nitish Kumar, Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav explained that the remarks were taken out of context and clarified that the Chief Minister was discussing sex education and practical measures to address population growth.

</excerpt>

CM Nitish Kumar’s Bold Remark: The Bihar Assembly was abruptly adjourned until 2 p.m. after the start of its proceedings, as the opposition BJP persisted in demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over comments he made the previous day about women.

At the assembly’s 11 a.m. session, Leader of the Opposition Vijay Kumar Sinha claimed that Kumar had become mentally unfit to govern the state and should resign. The chief minister, present in the House, stood to offer an explanation, expressing regret for his remarks. He emphasised that he has always supported women’s education and saw a direct correlation between women’s education levels and the fertility rate, explaining the context of his comments.

The chief minister, who was present in the House, rose to offer his explanation and said, “I have expressed my regret while talking to journalists outside the House. I am ready to do so again. If my words have caused any hurt, I condemn myself (main apni ninda karta hoon)”.

However, the opposition members remained resolute, storming the well of the House and demanding the chief minister’s resignation. The Speaker reminded the opposition members that they have no right to demand the resignation of the chief minister, who enjoys the confidence of the people. He also assured that any unparliamentary remarks in the chief minister’s speech would be expunged if found.

As the ruckus persisted, the Speaker adjourned the House until lunch.

Women’s wings of Left parties supporting the ruling ‘Mahagathbandhan government in the state criticised the chief minister’s remarks. AIDWA, affiliated with CPI (M), and AIPWA, linked to CPI (ML) Liberation, demanded an apology from the chief minister and described his language and body language as vulgar and indicative of patriarchy. They also criticised female members of the House for not raising objections during the session, suggesting their sole concern was their own political careers.

</excerpt>

Janata Dal-United (JD(U)) National President Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh took a swipe at the BJP-led Central government, highlighting the development efforts of the Bihar government in comparison. He expressed that the Bihar government’s initiatives, particularly related to the census, are aimed at promoting development with justice.

Singh stated, “The Bihar government is working for development, taking into consideration justice, while the central government is not doing any development.” He criticized the BJP’s ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ slogan, suggesting that it remains unfulfilled, and predicted that the people of Bihar would reject such claims.

The JDU leader praised the grand alliance government in Bihar for its efforts to implement development with justice, contrasting this with the alleged lack of development by those in Delhi who claim to work for the welfare of all.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had called for special status for Bihar and appealed to the Centre to conduct a caste-based census across the country. He argued that a caste-based census was necessary to formulate inclusive policies and address the needs of the state, which he described as economically challenged.

In summary, Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, the JDU National President, emphasized that the Bihar government is focused on development with justice, contrasting this with his perception of the central government’s performance and highlighting the need for a caste-based census in the country.

</excerpt>

Chaos erupted at the Bihar Assembly during the ongoing Winter Session on Wednesday as Opposition members rushed to the well, raising slogans against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar due to his objectionable remarks on birth control made the day before.

“I apologize and take back my words,” the Bihar CM told reporters after BJP legislators prevented his entry into the legislative assembly.

On Tuesday, during a debate on caste census in the Winter Session of the Assembly, the Bihar Chief Minister sparked controversy by stating that women should be educated to avoid sexual intercourse leading to pregnancy. He emphasized the need for girls’ education to address the issue of population growth in the state.

Kumar, in his address to the Assembly, claimed that the fertility rate in the state, previously at 4.3%, had dropped to 2.9% according to a report from last year.

“I would like to apologize to those whom I may have offended with my words,” Nitish Kumar told reporters on Wednesday.

His remarks incited strong criticism from the BJP, as well as the chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), who demanded an unconditional apology.

In response, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla condemned Kumar’s statement, calling it “despicable, disgusting, atrocious, obnoxious, and anti-women.” He expressed concerns about the impact of such remarks and behaviour within the state.

Union Minister of State Nityanand Rai also expressed strong disapproval, stating that Nitish Kumar had lost his “mental stability” and should apologize and withdraw from politics.

Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav defended Nitish Kumar, asserting that his remarks were about sex education and should not be misinterpreted as offensive. He clarified that the Chief Minister was discussing practical ways to address the issue of population growth and that this should be considered as a matter of sex education.

</excerpt>

Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar and the leader of the Janata Dal-United (JDU), criticized the Congress during the Communist Party of India’s (CPI) ‘BJP Hatao, Desh Bachao’ rally in Patna. Nitish Kumar expressed concern that the Congress appeared preoccupied with state assembly elections in five states, implying a lack of enthusiasm for the India bloc’s advancement.

Nitish Kumar stated that the coalition will continue to fight for the country and that coalition meetings will resume once the elections in five states are completed.
“The government in the center is attempting to change the country’s history and legacy.” We must protect the country from such forces. As a result, we have formed an all-opposition coalition.

Nitish Kumar asserted that the bloc won’t stop the fight for the country and added that the meetings of the coalition will resume once the elections in five states are over.
“The government in the center is trying to alter the history of the country and the legacy of the country. We should save the country from such forces. So we have formed a coalition of all opposition parties, urging them all to unite against those trying to tarnish the country’s history,” he said in a statement.

Despite these reservations, Nitish Kumar emphasized that the coalition would not halt its efforts to fight for the country. He announced that the coalition meetings would resume after the elections in the five states were concluded.

The JDU leader further stated that “some anti-social elements” are attempting to incite conflict between Hindus and Muslims in the country when there are no issues between the two communities. ” The BJP tries to incite conflict between Hindus and Muslims, but there is no conflict between Hindus and Muslims. “These people attempt to do something. They have accomplished a great deal since 2007. There are some anti-social elements, and those in power want to unite them in order to sow discord,” CM Nitish Kumar added. Furthermore, he accused them of inciting unrest for their own benefit.

The upcoming state elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram are scheduled for November 7 to November 30, with vote counting set for December 3. These elections will set the stage for the 2024 general election, with nearly 16 crore eligible voters. Nitish Kumar’s statements reflect the dynamics and challenges within the opposition bloc as they prepare for these crucial state elections.

The three meetings convened by the opposition alliance INDIA bloc this year did not result in the announcement of the PM candidate for the crucial contest.
The JD(U) leader claimed that Nitish Kumar has been the state’s chief minister for 18 years and has served five times as a minister at the federal level.

The three leaders met behind closed doors to plan their strategy for taking on the BJP in the elections of 2024. The chief minister Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav headed to the state secretariat “Nabanna” after arriving at the airport.

Given their prior affiliations with the Congress party, the de-facto leader of the JDU might find it challenging to persuade both leaders. While Sudip Bandyopadhyay, a senior TMC MP, indicated that the Trinamool Congress would go its own way and maintain distance from both the Congress and the BJP, Akhilesh Yadav stated that SP would maintain equal distance from both the Congress and the BJP.

Nitish Kumar to meet Mamata Banerjee

Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar will meet with his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata today.The meeting follows his trip to the national capital to meet with Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge and former MP Rahul Gandhi. The conference was considered as a crucial step towards setting the framework for a large Opposition alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year. After the meeting, Rahul told reporters that it was a “historic step” towards Opposition unity and a “ideological fight.”Rahul, who uploaded a photo of himself with Kharge and leaders of the JDU and RJD, stated that they are “standing together, will fight together for India.”
“A historic step towards Opposition unity has been taken today in this ideological battle.” (We’re) standing together, fighting together – for India!” Rahul Gandhi stated in a tweet following his meeting with Nitish Kumar.The meeting was attended by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav and Janata Dal-United president Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh.
CM Mamata Banerjee is also making no effort to close ranks with other parties ahead of the 2024 elections, having met with Samajwadi Party chairman Akhilesh Yadav at her residence in Kolkata last month.

In a huge setback for Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, ahead of 2024 general elections, Upendra Kushwaha, on Monday, February 20, quit Janata Dal (United) and resigned from all positions and launched a new political party named ‘Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal’.

This developments in Bihar politics comes at the time when Kushwaha has been at loggerheads with the State’s Chief Minister. Kushwaha announced the name of his party and said that he has been made party’s national president.

The tussle between the two, which has been going on for months now came to an end today with the announcement, however, Kushwaha attacked Nitish while launching his political party.

“We’ve decided to form a new party – Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal. This has been decided unanimously. I’ve been made its national president. The party will take forward the legacy of Karpoori Thakur. We’ll work towards rejecting the agreement made with RJD,” Kushwaha said.

He furthermore claimed that when Nitish Kumar became the Chief Minister of the State, he did pretty well, however, now he had lost the track and the path that he opted at the end was “bad for him and the party”.

“A new political innings is beginning today. Barring a few, everyone in JD(U) was expressing concern…A meeting was held with elected colleagues and decision was taken…Nitish Kumar did well in the beginning but in the end, the path on which he started walking is bad for him and Bihar, and the party,” Kushwaha added.

Furthermore, he also alleged that the Kumar was not acting on his own volition but as per the suggestions of people around him.
“He’s unable to act on his own today because he never made an effort to make a successor…Had Nitish Kumar chosen a successor, he needn’t have looked at neighbours for one,” he said.
