Over a border dispute in contentious areas between Maharashtra and Karnataka Karnataka Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai will visit Delhi to meet senior advocate, Mukul Rohatgi on Tuesday.

Talking to the media CM Bommai said, “The case pertaining to the border dispute with Maharashtra is coming up for hearing in the Supreme Court on November 30. The government has appointed former justice of the apex court, Justice Shivaraj Patil as chairman of the Karnataka Border and Rivers Protection Commission, with whom also the meeting has been held. The State is all set for a legal battle with the neighboring Maharashtra State and the stand of Karnataka will be effectively presented before the court.”

On the border dispute, CM Bommai refused to comment and said, it is not correct to make any comment or discuss it in public since the matter is in court.

Earlier, on Sunday in the wake of the case coming up before the Supreme Court on November 30, a meeting was held with senior advocates and officials by CM Bommai.

“The petition filed by the state of Maharashtra in regard to the border issue did not have any legal provision since it was filed on the basis of the State Reorganisation Act and Article 3 (formation of new states and alteration of areas, boundaries or names of existing states) of the Constitution,” Karnataka CM said.

Meanwhile, the case will be presented by well-learned counsels led by Mukul Rohtagi and Uday Holla on behalf of Karnataka.

“The senior advocates, A G Prabhulinga Navadagi and Uday Holla have given certain directions. I will be going to Delhi on November 29 and will discuss these with our senior advocate, Mukul Rohtagi on these issues. In all, the State of Karnataka is ready for a legal battle to protect the border and land of ours,” CM Bommai said.

CM Bommai further said, “We are abiding by the law as well as the Constitution. There will be no change in the landscape of Karnataka. The state’s stand and demand will be presented at the time of presenting the case. In this connection, an all-party meeting and legal experts meeting has been convened next week to discuss the line of argument.”

Moreover, talking about the border row CM Bommai said in Maharashtra border row has become a political tool and for political purposes, it will be raised.

“My government is capable of protecting the borders of Karnataka and has taken steps also,” Bommai said.

However, some villages in Maharashtra’s Sangli district are facing water crises and passed a resolution seeking their merger with Karnataka, CM Bommai claimed.

Furthermore, the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister denied all the claims of the merger.

“Information about a complaint submitted to ADGP, Karnataka Lokayukta Police, Bangalore against the Chief Minister of Karnataka for payment of bribes to chief reporters of several media houses in disguise of Deepawali gifts, through his media coordinator Shankar Pagoji for Criminal Offence of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1088, Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 and relevant provisions of any other law,” stated the complaint.

In the meantime, the Congress called for a judicial investigation into the alleged cash gift issue against the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government on Friday.

In its official Twitter account, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) questioned the source of the “money” the government was using illegally.

KPCC tweeted, “There should be a judicial inquiry into the Chief Minister’s office ‘sweet box bribe’ to journalists. Is that misuse of public tax money? What is the source of the money? How much bribes have been paid? How many received bribes? How many (journalists) returned?”

“We did not simply campaign against Bommai as PayCM. This government is receiving bribes, and giving bribes. All bribes are routed through PayCM. The government is trying to hush up scams by purchasing media outlets just like the government came to power by purchasing MLAs,” claimed the KPCC in another tweet.

In September, the Congress started the “PayCM” campaign, accusing the BJP for corruption in the state.

Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Singh Surjewala, two additional Congress leaders, also asked the administration for an explanation over the alleged journalist bribery case.

Surjewala tweeted, “The #40PercentSarkar seeks to bribe the journalists with ₹1 Lakh cash! Will Mr. Bommai answer – 1. Isn’t it “bribe” being offered by CM? 2. What is the source of ₹1,00,000? Has it come from Public Exchequer or from CM himself? 3. Will ED/IT take note?”

A 50-year-old woman who was seriously injured after falling off a scooter and being hit by a bus in Rajajinagar on Monday passed away at a hospital late at night in another case of Bengaluru’s pothole-filled roads taking life.

When they were attempting to dodge a pothole on the Vatal Nagaraj Road near Lulu Mall, Umadevi was riding pillion with her daughter Vanitha S, 28, when a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus knocked down their scooter. Umadevi was admitted to the intensive care unit at the ESIC hospital in Rajajinagar after the accident caused major head and leg injuries.

The incident also drew the attention of the chief minister, Basavaraj Bommai, who promised swift action and directed the police to begin an investigation on Tuesday.

“I have given instructions, corporation (BBMP) commissioner also met. What has happened there (pothole) and repairing it is one part… I have also asked police to inquire into the reasons for the death, the complaint received and report back. Once the report comes, I have directed officials to take action against the guilty,” he said.

After several fatalities linked to potholes this year, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), in charge of providing facilities and infrastructure in the capital of Karnataka, has once again come under fire for civic apathy.

Supreeth J, 44, was killed in an accident involving his two-wheeler on the way to work in August, and Ashwin, a tech worker in Haveri, 27, was killed in an accident involving a pothole that the city’s civic organisations had excavated in March. Both men were their families’ sole providers of income.

Residents and users of the internet were outraged by these previous incidents, which even prompted the Karnataka High Court to summon and question BBMP officials about them several times. Although in September the High Court ordered the BBMP to repair potholes on major roads in Bengaluru within ten days, it is unclear if the order has been followed.

Basavaraj Bommai, the chief minister of Karnataka, said he would respond to a letter sent to him by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi about the condition of a wounded elephant at the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve.

Bommai said he will order the forest officials to give the necessary medical treatment to the elephant.

Talking to reporters on Thursday, the CM said, “I will collect information from the senior forest officers within half an hour to examine whether it is possible to treat the injured baby elephant. I will respond to Gandhi’s letter and do whatever possible on humanitarian grounds. Elephants have their habitats, will look into what extent human interference can happen and will verify on how treatment can be given.”

The Congress MP wrote to Bommai a day ago, pleading for his help in getting prompt medical attention for a critically injured elephant calf at the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve. He claimed that when visiting the Reserve with his mother and interim Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, they stumbled across the injured calf. Nagarahole spans 847.981 sq km and is located in Mysuru and Kodagu.
