SC affirms LG’s power to appoint aldermen, clears way for Standing Committee formation

Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced another setback as the Supreme Court on Monday upheld the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s decision to nominate 10 ‘aldermen’ to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

This ruling clears the way for forming the Standing Committee in the MCD, which has been absent since the AAP took power. Following the Supreme Court’s order, Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, the leader of the opposition in the MCD, stated, “Considering the interests of the citizens, the Aam Aadmi Party’s Mayor should issue a notification for the elections of the Standing Committee and Ward Committees as soon as possible.”

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Narasimha and JB Pardiwala stated that the Lieutenant Governor (LG) is expected to act according to the statutory mandate, rather than based on the aid and advice of the Delhi government. The top court, in its judgement, declared, “The Delhi LG is to act as per the mandate of the statute, not on the advice of the council of ministers.”

The Supreme Court’s verdict came in response to a plea from the Delhi government challenging the nomination of 10 ‘aldermen’ by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. In May 2023, the apex court had reserved its judgement on the matter. The AAP government argued that the nominations were made in MCD ward committees where the BJP had a weaker presence. The counsel representing the LG contended that the “aid and advice” of the Delhi government were not required when exercising a statutory power explicitly conferred on the Administrator. After AAP won the municipal elections, the Lieutenant Governor appointed 10 ‘aldermen,’ a move opposed by the Delhi government. The Delhi government’s petition sought to quash the orders dated January 3 and 4, 2023, through which the LG nominated 10 individuals as members of the MCD. The plea argued that the Lieutenant Governor had “illegally” appointed these 10 members on his own initiative, without the aid and advice of the Council of Ministers. The Delhi government noted that this was the first time since Article 239AA came into effect in 1991 that such a nomination was made by the LG, bypassing the elected government and thus assuming a power that rightfully belongs to the duly elected government.

Sanjay Singh, a senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party and a Rajya Sabha MP, told the media, “I believe this decision is a significant blow to the country’s democracy. By bypassing the elected government, all the powers will be given to the LG. This is not good for democracy and the Constitution of India. With due respect, we completely disagree with this decision.” He added, “This decision is entirely against the spirit of democracy and contradicts the court’s comments during the hearing. After reading the full order, we will determine our next steps.”

Meanwhile, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit criticised AAP, stating that the Supreme Court had followed the law and confirmed that the authority to appoint the aldermen rests with the Lieutenant Governor (LG). He also remarked that AAP has consistently clashed with the LG and should have understood the laws before submitting the names of the 10 aldermen.

“The Supreme Court looked at the law and clarified that the right to appoint the aldermen lies with the LG. You’ve always fought with the LG, and you should have read the law before sending the names of the aldermen. This shows that either you are uninformed or deceitful. It’s clear that you’re lying and manipulating the legal system,” Dikshit stated.

Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, the leader of the opposition in the MCD, told the Daily Guardian that following the Supreme Court’s order, the Aam Aadmi Party should quickly hold elections for the Standing Committee and Ward Committees. This would allow stalled development projects to resume and enable citizens to access the services of the Delhi Municipal Corporation. He emphasised that the Standing Committee is a crucial component of the corporation, and its absence has halted all development work. Singh added that, considering the interests of the citizens, the Aam Aadmi Party’s mayor should promptly issue a notification for these elections.

BJP Protest Against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Over Water Crisis

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors protested against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) house over the ongoing water crisis in the capital. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi accused BJP councillors of disrupting House proceedings, noting that the session, intended for discussing monsoon preparations and drain cleaning, was affected.

BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri led a demonstration with party workers regarding the water shortage. Meanwhile, residents of Okhla Phase 2 and Kusumpur Pahari received water supply through tankers, offering some relief. However, locals reported ongoing issues with dirty tap water and inconsistent supply.

Virendra Pandit, a resident, mentioned, “There is a slight improvement in water supply, but the crisis persists. We have been receiving dirty water through taps for the past few years, so we aren’t using it.”

In another development, AAP Minister Atishi, who began a hunger strike on June 22 demanding Haryana release Delhi’s water share, was hospitalized due to deteriorating health. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav visited Atishi at Lok Nayak Hospital, where she was admitted to the ICU.

AAP alleges that Haryana is providing Delhi with 100 million gallons per day less water than agreed, affecting 28 lakh residents. Despite recent rainfall offering temporary respite, the water crisis remains a critical concern.

Earlier, AAP leader Sanjay Singh announced the end of Atishi’s hunger strike but pledged to continue raising the issue in Parliament and appealed to the Prime Minister to address Delhi’s water needs.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal faces returning to Tihar Jail on June 2, following a Delhi court’s postponement of its verdict on his interim bail plea to June 5 in connection with the Delhi excise policy case. Kejriwal, seeking seven days’ bail on medical grounds, is implicated in the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy of 2021-22. Despite his legal team’s request for an immediate verdict, citing the Supreme Court’s deadline, the court opted to defer its decision.

During the proceedings, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) opposed Kejriwal’s bail plea, arguing its inadmissibility before the trial court. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta highlighted Kejriwal’s recent press conference where he announced his intention to surrender, suggesting that his bail application was a last-minute attempt. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju supported this stance, alleging Kejriwal’s non-disclosure of his extension plea to the Supreme Court. Raju stressed the trial court’s inability to modify Supreme Court orders and emphasized the stringent conditions of Section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

In response, Senior Advocate N Hariharan, representing Arvind Kejriwal , cited the Supreme Court’s May 17 order, which granted liberty to file bail pleas. He underscored Kejriwal’s deteriorating health condition and the urgency for medical tests. ASG Raju countered, accusing Kejriwal of deliberately delaying medical examinations.

The court reserved its decision on the interim bail plea, scheduling Kejriwal’s regular bail application hearing for June 7, pending ED’s response.

This marks Kejriwal’s first regular bail application since his March 21 arrest by the ED. Previous challenges to his arrest were dismissed by lower courts, with the Supreme Court’s decision pending. The arrest stems from allegations of Kejriwal’s involvement in a ₹100-crore bribery conspiracy linked to changes in Delhi’s excise policy, which he denies. The policy, aimed at reforming the liquor industry, was scrapped amid controversy and replaced.

Kejriwal seeks one week extension of bail

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday stated that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a seven-day extension of his interim bail on medical grounds.

Kejriwal was released from Delhi’s Tihar Jail on May 10, 50 days after being imprisoned on corruption charges related to the alleged liquor policy scam, and shortly after the Supreme Court granted him bail until June 1.

As per AAP, Kejriwal has lost 7 kilograms since his arrest, and his ketone levels are high, which could indicate a serious disease.

The party also stated that doctors advised the AAP convenor to undergo a Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET-CT) scan as well as other medical tests, which is why Kejriwal has requested an extension of his interim bail.

After being released from jail, Kejriwal has been campaigning for the I.N.D.I.A bloc in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Kejriwal in an excise policy case on March 21, just days after the general election schedule was announced.

The bail is effective until June 1, and Kejriwal must surrender to authorities on June 2. He participates in election campaigns but is unable to attend his office as Chief Minister.

The Supreme Court imposed certain conditions on Kejriwal’s interim bail, including that he would not interact with any of the witnesses or have access to any official files related to the case.

He will not “make any comment concerning his role” in the current case, the bench ruled.
“He shall be bound by the statement made on his behalf that he shall not sign official files unless it is required and necessary for obtaining clearance/ approval of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi,” the order read.

Atishi Calls for Medical Tests for Kejriwal Amid Bail Extension Pleas

The Aam Aadmi Party minister Atishi stated that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has submitted a petition to the Supreme Court, requesting a seven-day extension of his interim bail related to the alleged liquor policy case. Atishi noted that Kejriwal’s weight loss has raised concerns among doctors.

Atishi said “Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has filed for a seven-day extension of his interim bail. When he was in ED custody, judicial custody, he lost seven kg of weight. This sudden weight loss is a matter of concern for doctors. Despite being out of custody and under medical supervision, he has not regained that weight again.”

The AAP leader also informed that the early tests showed extremely high ketone levels in his body. Sudden weight loss and high ketones could indicate serious medical issues, including kidney damage or cancer. Doctors recommend a series of investigations, including a PET scan and other serious tests.

Kejriwal was freed from Delhi’s Tihar Jail on May 10, 50 days after being imprisoned on corruption charges related to the alleged liquor policy scam, following the Supreme Court’s decision to grant him bail until June 1. Since his release, Kejriwal has been actively campaigning for the INDIA bloc in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Graffiti inside metros stations threatening CM

Graffiti messages threatning Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal surfaced on Rajiv Chowk and Patel Nagar Metro stations of the Blue Line on Monday morning. The messages were reportedly scribed inside the metro coach too in red with a ‘Kejriwal Dilli chod Dijiye otherwise you will have to remember the three slaps you planted before elections’ (Kejriwal, please leave Delhi). Also, some derogatory words were also written below this message in a metro coach.

Speaking on this, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said, First, they didn’t provide insulin to Arvind Kejriwal for 23 days in jail, and now this is happening. Now, Ankit Goyal has written a threat to attack Kejriwal at Patel Nagar and Rajiv Chowk metro stations. The language of this threat is exactly like what the BJP says every day. If Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal gets even a scratch, the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be directly responsible for it.

As the national capital is scheduled to vote on May 25 for the general elections, these threats have led AAP to target the BJP-led central government over this issue. Addressing a press conference, Delhi Minister Atishi Marlena asserted, Despite the high-security environment with 24-hour CCTV surveillance and the presence of police and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, the threats were written and left unchecked. “How does someone write threats and leave the metro station despite such tight security?”. She also criticized the Delhi Police’s inaction, contrasting their response to the allegations made by Delhi Commission for Women Chief Swati Maliwal with their current silence.
“Where is the Delhi Police that became super active on Maliwal’s fake allegations now?” Atishi asked, implying a double standard in the enforcement of law and order.

The AAP leader alleged that the threats are part of a broader BJP-led conspiracy following Kejriwal’s release on bail by the Supreme Court. She claimed that Kejriwal’s imprisonment was politically motivated, coinciding suspiciously with the announcement of Lok Sabha elections. “Ever since CM Arvind Kejriwal came out of jail, the BJP and Modi ji have been conspiring to attack him incessantly,” Atishi said.

The allegations extend to suggesting that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is directly involved in orchestrating these threats, pointing to the coordinated nature of the incidents and the lack of action by the authorities. “These threats are part of the conspiracy of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji,” she asserted.

Addressing a public rally in South Delhi in support of BJP candidate Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Shah asserted the BJP’s confidence in winning all seven seats in Delhi. He taunted Kejriwal, suggesting that the Chief Minister was clinging to his position through adhesive means and warned that the BJP’s victory would unseat him.

Delhi Police Detain AAP Workers During ‘Jail Bharo’ Protest Amid Political Tensions

Amid a significant political confrontation over the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s former aide in connection with the alleged assault on AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, Delhi Police detained several AAP workers on Sunday. The detentions occurred as they marched towards the BJP headquarters in a planned ‘Jail Bharo’ protest.

CM Kejriwal, decrying the arrest of his former aide, accused the BJP at the Centre of playing a ‘Jail Ka Khel’ (game of imprisoning leaders) against his party. He announced on Saturday that he would lead the ‘Jail Bharo’ march to the BJP headquarters, accompanied by top party leaders and workers.

Delhi Central DCP Harsha Vardhan Mandava, speaking to ANI, stated, “Based on information received through social media and other channels, we have made preventive arrangements on DDU Marg to maintain law and order. We are committed to ensuring adequate security deployments, with barricades in place to prevent any disruptions.”

He further informed that Section 144 has been imposed on DDU Marg, prohibiting any protests in the area. Earlier in the day, extensive security measures were implemented outside the BJP headquarters in anticipation of the AAP protest.

The Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory ahead of the AAP protest, warning of potential traffic snarls on DDU Marg, IP Marg, Minto Road, and Vikas Marg. They advised commuters to avoid these areas, noting that DDU Marg might remain closed to traffic between 11 am and 2 pm.

The controversy began with the arrest of Kejriwal’s former personal assistant on Saturday in connection with the alleged assault on Swati Maliwal. The accused was produced before the Tis Hazari Court, which remanded him in police custody for five days.

In response to the arrest, Kejriwal released a video statement, accusing the BJP of targeting AAP leaders. “They are putting our leaders behind bars one after another. They have jailed me, Manish Sisodia, Satyendra Jain, and Sanjay Singh. Now they have arrested my former PA. They are threatening to jail Raghav Chadha, Atishi, and Saurabh Bharadwaj next. Perhaps our fault was building schools, mohalla clinics, and providing free electricity, which they failed to accomplish. ‘Government will not be formed at Center without AAP’ says Bhagwant Mann

ED Summons Delhi Minister Kailash Gahlot; Leaders Rally in Support of Kejriwal

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Delhi Transport Minister and AAP leader Kailash Gahlot regarding the Delhi excise policy case.

Sources report that the investigative agency has summoned Delhi Minister Kailash Gahlot for questioning in the continuing money laundering case associated with the Delhi excise policy. This follows the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the case on March 21.

Earlier on Friday, AAP leader and Delhi Minister Gopal Rai declared that numerous distinguished leaders from the INDIA alliance would join a rally at Ramlila Maidan on March 31 to support Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal after his recent arrest.

He said, “Reactions from the entire country came after the arrest of CM Arvind Kejriwal. The main leaders of the INDIA alliance will join the rally on March 31 in Ramlila Maidan.”
“Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, Akhilesh Yadav, Farooq Abdullah, Bhagwant Mann, Champai Soren, Tejashwi Yadav, Sitaram Yechury and many more leaders have been confirmed to join the rally,” he added.

On Friday, the Hindu Sena filed a new petition in the Delhi High Court seeking the removal of Kejriwal from the position of Chief Minister. The petition requests the court to direct Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor to dismiss Chief Minister Kejriwal and to administer Delhi through the Central Government via the Lieutenant Governor.

The day following the extension of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s custody until April 1 by a local court, his wife, Sunita Kejriwal, released a video statement initiating a WhatsApp campaign called ‘Kejriwal ko Aashirwaad’.

On Thursday, the Rouse Avenue Court extended Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s custodial remand by an additional four days in a money laundering case connected to the Excise Policy. In court, Kejriwal stated, “The real liquor scam began post the ED investigation. The motive of the ED is to crush the Aam Aadmi Party.”

Forces deployed as Arvind Kejriwal appears in court amid potential protests

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to appear in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Thursday as his custodial remand with the Enforcement Directorate ends. This follows a Delhi High Court decision denying him immediate relief regarding his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate.

On Wednesday, Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita, stated that her husband would make a “big expose” regarding alleged irregularities in the liquor policy case during Thursday’s court proceedings. She also claimed that no money was discovered in multiple raids conducted by the central probe agency on the premises of Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, and Satyendar Jain.

In anticipation of Kejriwal’s court appearance, the Delhi Police deployed personnel and paramilitary forces to prevent any potential incidents, particularly in response to anticipated protests by AAP workers and leaders.

Crucial responsibilities were reportedly assigned to Delhi Police personnel, with DCP rank officers remaining on the ground. Orders were issued to detain protesters, and all vehicles in the area were instructed to be inspected.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 and subsequently remanded to the probe agency’s custody until March 28 by a Delhi court. Last week, the Chief Minister’s petition to the high court for an urgent hearing was reportedly denied due to the high court’s closure for Holi.

Following his arrest, AAP leaders staged massive protests, while BJP leaders and workers protested outside the Delhi Assembly demanding Kejriwal’s resignation.

The Aam Aadmi Party criticized the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday, claiming the agency had no response to questions raised by the Chief Minister’s lawyers in the High Court regarding his arrest. In contrast, the BJP asserted that Kejriwal failed to obtain relief because the Enforcement Directorate had “concrete” evidence against him, suggesting that the final chapter of Kejriwal’s “politics of deception” would unfold in the coming days.

The case revolves around alleged corruption and money laundering in formulating and executing the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, which was subsequently scrapped. Top AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh are in judicial custody in connection with the case.

BJP holds counter-protest in Delhi, calls for resignation of Arvind Kejriwal

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a counter-protest in Delhi on Tuesday, calling for the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal. Led by Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, the party marched from Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium to Delhi Secretariat via ITO, with several senior leaders in attendance.

According to Sachdeva, “The CM of Delhi is corrupt and dishonest and he has looted the people of Delhi. We are going to the Secretariat to demand his resignation… The government is not running from the jail. Just like AAP’s character, the orders are also fake… Arvind Kejriwal has to resign.”

Another BJP leader stated, “Arvind Kejriwal is in jail and he thinks he will run the government from jail. Previously, many chief ministers were arrested and they also believe the same… Former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren and former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa had to tender their resignations after their arrests.”

The protest comes after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) protestors were detained outside Patel Chowk metro station while protesting against Kejriwal’s arrest. Among those detained was Punjab Minister and AAP leader Harjot Singh Bains.

Reacting to the AAP protest, AAP leader Reena Gupta said, “Our demand is that Arvind Kejriwal should be released immediately. His arrest is illegal. AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal to Visit Goa for Lok Sabha Polls Preparation

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to visit Goa from January 18 to 20 to assess the party’s preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. During his visit, Kejriwal will address AAP workers in Goa, according to sources.

Originally proposed for January 11 and 12, the tour was postponed due to Kejriwal’s involvement in meetings related to Republic Day program preparations in the national capital.

As part of the alliance-building process, a meeting between Congress and Aam Aadmi Party leaders took place in Goa on Friday. The two-hour meeting at Congress Rajya Sabha MP Mukul Wasnik’s residence was described as positive by leaders of both parties.

In addition to the Lok Sabha polls’ preparation, the virtual meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc on Saturday is expected to discuss the alliance parties’ participation in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, set to commence on January 14 in Manipur.

The INDIA bloc, comprising opposition parties, including the Congress, aims to challenge the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The NDA secured 353 seats in the 2019 elections, with the BJP winning 303. The UPA secured 91 seats, while other parties won 98 seats. The election, conducted in seven phases between April 11 and May 19, witnessed a voter turnout of around 67%.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal to skip ED summons again, calls notice as “illegal”

According to Aam Aadmi Party sources on Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will not be questioning in the Delhi liquor scam case before the Enforcement Directorate. In relation to the excise policy case, CM Kejriwal received a third summons from ED on December 22 of last year, requesting that he appear before the agency on January 3. Party sources claim that although Kejriwal declined to appear today and called the notice “illegal,” he did indicate in his response to the ED that he was willing to assist with the investigation. According to party sources, Kejriwal further questioned the notice’s timing, believing it to be an attempt to prevent him from campaigning ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections.

According to sources Kejriwal is ready to cooperate in ED investigation but the ED notice is illegal. Sources claim that the agency intends to arrest Arvind Kejriwal as they want to stop Kejriwal from the election campaign. The AAP has questioned the timing of the notice just before the 2024 elections.
The Delhi CM was first called by the central agency to appear on November 2, but he did not depose, alleging that the notice was “vague, motivated and unsustainable in law.”
He further alleged that the said summons appeared to be politically motivated and issued for extraneous considerations.
Kejriwal was issued the second summons by the ED on December 18, asking him to depose at the federal agency’s office on December 21, which the Chief Minister skipped.
Kejriwal was not named as an accused in the first information report (FIR) filed by the CBI on August 17, last year.

CM Arvind Kejriwal dedicates 5 new Mohalla Clinics to city

Tuesday saw the dedication of a Mahilla Mohalla Clinic as well as five new Mohalla Clinics by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Speaking at the event, Kejriwal said, “The doctors and staff in all our mohalla clinics are very good. They have won the hearts of people”.
AAP national convenor said that eleven mohalla clinics were functioning in Greater Kailash.

Keshopur Sabzi Mandi, Shahbad Diary (a general Mohalla clinic and Mahilla Mohalla clinic), Govindpuri, and Kalkaji Market are the locations of the new facilities. There are currently 533 Mohalla Clinics operating in the National Capital, the party claimed on its social media platform X, which was formerly known as Twitter.

“Out of which 512 are working in Morning Shift and 21 in Evening Shift,” AAP tweeted.
Mohalla Clinics, which were launched in 2015, are community health centres initially introduced in New Delhi that provide a free basic package of necessary medical services, including prescription drugs, diagnostic tests, and consultations.

On August 14, the night before Independence Day, the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government in Punjab opened 76 mohalla clinics in the state.

All govt and private schools closed in waterlogged areas in Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday announced to close all government and private schools in areas where people were suffering with extensive flooding and waterlogging. In a tweet, the chief minister urged all councillors and MLAs to visit relief camps and provide all possible support.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s Directorate of Education, too, ordered all government and private schools to close immediately in flood endangered areas, without waiting for orders. On Thursday, the CM urged people in the national capital to help out each other as much as possible and extend all necessary assistance in flood prone areas in Delhi.

“The water level of Yamuna is increasing continuously. Now the water has reached 208.46 metres. Due to the rising water level, the Yamuna has come on the roads around it. You are requested not to go on these routes. People are being evacuated from the populated areas where there is water. The people living there are requested to cooperate with the administration. Saving the lives of people is most important. There is an appeal to all the people of Delhi to cooperate with each other in every possible way in this emergency”, CM Kejriwal shared in a tweet.

Traffic movement has been impaired in several places due to the rise in the water level of Yamuna and the resultant inundation of low-lying areas. Several areas of the city are under water as the water level of river Yamuna continues to rise following heavy rainfall and the release of water from the Hathnkund Barrage in neighbouring Haryana.

The North East district police have informed that more than 1000 people and around 999 cattle have been rescued from different areas near Yamuna amid the flood situation. The rescue was carried out in Usmanpur, Shastri Park, and Sonia Vihar police station areas.

No commercial vehicles will be allowed between Mukarba Chowk and Wazirabad Bridge, Sarai Kale Khan and IP Flyover, and Akshardham and Sarai Kale Khan.

Liquor policy case: CBI summons Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on 16 April

In a significant development in the Delhi excise policy case, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been summoned for questioning by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been summoned for questioning. This development comes as former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia remains in judicial custody in the same case.

Sisodia was arrested by the ED and CBI as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of GNCTD’s excise policy.

On February 26, 2023, the CBI arrested Sisodia in the liquor policy case. After hours of questioning at Tihar Jail, the ED arrested him on March 9.

Following the arrest of Sameer Mahendru, Managing Director of Delhi’s Jor Bagh-based spirits distributor Indospirit Group, in the case, the ED raided nearly three dozen locations in Delhi and Punjab in October and later arrested him. Early this week, the CBI also filed its first charge sheet in the case.

Arvind Kejriwal: Government elected by 2 crore people should be allowed to function

Followed by the Budget session of Delhi Legislative Assembly which commenced on Friday, Delhi Chief Minister, Kejriwal said that AAP led government has performed despite various “roadblocks.”

After the conclusion of the first day budget session of Delhi Assembly, while conversing with the Media, the Kejriwal stated that, “Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena addressed the Assembly today. He said that ever since the AAP government has come, Delhi is progressing rapidly. In every direction, education, health, tourism, electricity, water, roads, infrastructure, there has been a robust development”.

“The LG even said that there were many obstructions, but the government performed despite all that. We all have seen the different types of interference that a publicly elected government has been facing, but the AAP government has been working by countering all those roadblocks. Not just the people of Delhi, but also of the country believe that” he further added.

He continued, “I believe that democracy should be respected, and if two crore people have elected a government, it should be allowed to function. Creating roadblocks in its working is not right”.

Manish Sisodia: As AAP grows, BJP will slap false cases on us

Prior to arriving at the CBI office on Sunday, February 26, for questioning in connection with the alleged, Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, stated that false cases are being lodged against the leaders of the ruling party as PM Modi was “afraid,” of Chef Minister, Arvind Kejriwal.

In his statement, Sisodia stated that, “Conspiracies are being hatched by the CBI and ED and false cases being lodged against our party leaders because PM Narendra Modi is afraid of CM Arvind Kejriwal’s rising popularity. As AAP grows further, BJP will continue to slap false cases on us. We are not afraid of the CBI, ED and their false cases..”
